INFORMATION ON RENTALS & TOURS

• ATV'S come with a full tank of gas
• Helmets, goggles, and gloves are provided 
• A backpack and two complimentary waters are given to each customer if needed
• Must wear closed toed shoes! NO SANDALS, CROCKS, OR SLIDES! Tall socks and pants preferred. Bright colors recommended
• Sunscreen provided but not required
• All customers over the age of 18 must have a valid ID AND ANY CHILDREN 17 AND UNDER MUST HAVE AN ADULT ACCOMPANY THEM ON RIDE
• NO REFUNDS are given for reasons Covid-19 related or ANY other issues, if your whole party doesn't show no refunds are given for missing members
• NO CANCELLATIONS ONCE TOUR OR RENTAL IS BOOKED
• Reschedule for a later date is allowed for up to TWO WEEKS of original booking date with a $50 rescheduling fee
• Our availability for guides is limited so if you are more then 15 minutes late for your scheduled time you will be left, and your ride will be canceled with no refunds

Through a partnership with Polaris RZR and its off road vehicles, Happy Trails Rental's mission is to share the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert with you and provide a safe and memorable experience to always cherish.

The Playground

The OHV Park is an area consisting of nearly 100,000 acres of open trails – talk about a playground prime for the outdoor enthusiast.

Johnson Valley is just North of the San Bernardino Mountains in the Mojave high desert region with an average elevation more than 3,000 feet.

The Landscape

A varied landscape is punctuated by vast valleys, sand dunes, large dry lake beds, sandy washes and massive rocky buttes. Vegetation consists mostly of Joshua trees, creosote scrub, and wild flowers that bloom with a rainbow of color in the spring time.

We are conveniently located near many popular Southern California tourist destinations. About 3o minutes from Joshua Tree National Park and Big Bear Lake. About 1 hour from Palm Springs International and Ontario International airports and less than 2 hours from most Los Angeles and Orange County communities.

Are there age requirements to drive or be a passenger?

Minimum age to rent and drive is 26 with a valid driver’s license. However, licensed drivers between 18 to 25 years old are allowed to drive only if they are accompanied by their parent in the same vehicle at the same time (no exceptions).

In order to be a passenger you must be able to sit in the seat, with your feet flat on the floor, back against the seat and your hands firmly on the hand hold.  While we do not enforce a strict height requirement, typically if an individual is about 54 inches tall, they will fit and be able to ride. Minors must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian. All participants are required to wear a helmet with goggles (helmet and goggles provided to borrower during your rental period) and wear closed-toe shoes at all times while in the vehicle. Happy Trails Rental reserves the right to refuse service to anyone, even those meeting the qualifications above, based on our sole discretion.

What is the difference between Self-Guided GPS Tour Rentals and Private Guided Tours?

Self-Guided GPS Tour options are ideal for customers who want to use the aid of our sophisticated GPS technology and follow pre-planned routes to exciting destinations. Self-Guided GPS Tours are perfect for the novice rider who wants to enjoy their riding experience at their own pace to allow time to stop and take in the beautiful scenery. Book directly on-line at our website by selecting the “Book Now” button.

Private Guided Tours are also available if you want to play follow-the-leader on your trail adventure and experience the Mojave desert in a unique way with an expert trail guide. We offer both day tours and special Sunset and Stargazing tours. Call us for pricing and reservations.

Are you allowed to camp in Johnson Valley?

Primitive camping is allowed anywhere within the boundaries of the Johnson Valley OHV Area, except on private property and established dirt roads. There are also a few vault bathrooms located on Anderson Dry Lake and on the north side of Cougar Buttes. Responsible camp fires are allowed, however do not burn wood with nails (pallets prohibited). The burning of potentially hazardous materials e.g. (but not limited to) gas, oil, plastic and magnesium is strictly prohibited. Please avoid building new fire rings. Federally protected desert tortoises are located in the OHV area so please be vigilant to stay away from these protected tortoises. Johnson Valley OHV is managed by Bureau of Land Management, Barstow Field Office, 2601 Barstow Road, Barstow, CA 92311, (760) 252-6000.

Tours for Quads/Dirt bikes

The ride begins with our guide taking a few minutes to explain and show you the safe operation of an ATV. You will then follow your guide as you power your own ATV through your choice of:

• The Mountains in San Diego’s East County (6 to 8 hrs. $300)
• The Dessert at Ocotillo Wells (7 to 9 hrs. $300)

The trail is generally dusty. Therefore, it is recommended that you wear clothing which you don’t mind getting dirty. Long pants, Long or Short sleeve shirt and hard shoes (no sandals) are recommended. Chap stick, Sunglasses and Sun block as well as a hat are also recommended. We will provide helmets. Helmets are required on operators who are under 18 years of age.

If you desire to bring a camera it is recommended that it be in a container which will protect it from the dust.

Meals and drinks are also provided on tours *please make us aware in advance of any food or drink allergies*

Jet Ski Tours

Upon arrival, you will be fitted with the required safety equipment and given a briefing on safety instructions, watercraft operational procedure and the regulations required to be followed at all times during your choice of tour:

Jet ski tours leave from Mission Bay to Oceanside Harbor or Oceanside Harbor to Mission Bay, we also can combine the two and make it a round trip ( for the hard core rider ).

You will get WET on this tour, Therefore it is recommended that you wear a Bathing suit, and shoes that can get wet. Sun block and chap stick should also be worn, bring a towel and if you are going to use a camera it should be WATERPROOF.

Our "1-day-family adventure" tour is a perfect vacation option for those who are looking for a good way to spend an unforgettable experience seeing the sites and picturesque views and having a fantastic time riding dirt bikes and ATVs through the mountains that you and your family will be talking about for years to come.

This "1-day adventure" tour is perfect for the whole family and with our almost 20 years of experience, you can be sure that our guides will have you and your family riding like pros and having a blast in no time.

Damage waivers $49.95 on the first day, $39.95 each additional day covers damages up to $1,200.00. Premium bikes are $65.00 for the first day and $40.00 for each additional day.

Rock the Trail with Extra Horsepower: The KTM 450 exc, Honda CRF 450X or Honda CRF 250X. Rent them for $39 each, for the half-day trip, or $60 per day.

9:00 a.m. Depending on your personalized tour arrangements, our friendly guide will pick you up at either your hotel (fees may apply) or at a parking lot near the border to Baja California Mexico (15 miles south of San Diego). Meet our guide, board the van and we will be on our way! Take the time to watch the scenery pass by; there are some unique notable sites to view.

10:00 a.m. Upon arrival, our guides will welcome you and distribute the gear bags; your motorcycle or ATV tour guide will give you detailed instructions on how to ride a quad or dirt bike. This is the time to kick up some dirt and get comfortable off-roading at your speed. Then we will head out to explore the beautiful sandy and rocky trails, and don’t forget to bring your camera!

1:00 p.m. Getting hungry? Taco time!. We will stay on our dirt bikes or 4-wheeler’s as we meander our way through the back streets of Puerto Nuevo and Rosarito. We will spend our lunch time at the best; authentic taco stand in town.

2:00 p.m. After lunch, we offer you the choice of riding terrain. Provided the morning went smoothly and you have a good grip on how to ride your chosen vehicle, you may decide you want to attack the rugged mountain tracks. We will ride a variety of Baja trails, 40-80 miles loops, mellow to aggressive. These are certainly more rugged terrain providing you with new and incredible views in all directions.

ATTENTION: Going to the mountain trails is entirely dependent upon your ability to ride and control your off-road vehicle. Your guide is in charge of evaluating each rider. The mountain trails are rough terrain, and if you are not able to control your vehicle, you will not be able to ride the trails. This goes for riders of all ages.

If you are concerned that you won't be able to ride the trails, we suggest you participate in our "2-days tour". This way you will spend the first day getting to know your vehicle, and the second day we will get you to the trails.

4:00 p.m. Riding ends: Well done! After your exciting day of riding, we will have worn you out!

Now is the time to say good bye to the ATV’s, Motorcycles and the great riding in Baja California Mexico.

But wait! Your experience doesn’t have to end here... Are you hungry again? Haven’t had your fill of what Baja has to offer? Let’s go into the village where we can sit by the water and you can try out our favorite lobster dinner in Puerto Nuevo. If time permits, take a stroll down the cobblestone street where all the street vendor will call out for your attention.

After a full day of riding and exploring, we’ll board to the tour van and return to the States. Take one last look at the passing scenery, and think of the next time you will come back!

Schedule times are negotiable. ATV or motorcycle Baja tours with kids might have different itineraries.

Notes: Our one day ATV tour price is based on a minimum of 2 people per group (If are you riding by yourself, a Single Rider-Fee may apply).
