2. Uvac Canyon Cruising

Many tourists are willing to go on 3-hour drive from Belgrade to the Uvac River Canyon, and with good reason. Uvac is one of Serbia's landmarks. Due to the inaccessible terrain of the Uvac canyon, the best way to see the lake Uvac and the canyon is to cruise in a small boat. All cruising tours start from the dam at the lake.

Most Uvac boat rides are about 4-5 hours long cruisings with sightseeing stops. Hiking to the best viewpoints of Uvac Canyon and visiting the ice cave are included in all boat tours at Uvac lake.

Always bring your jacket. The cave is cold even in summer. And keep in mind that hiking to viewpoints requires a good physical condition.

3. Djerdap Gorge and the Iron Gate boat cruise

The Danube is the second largest river in Europe. Serbia and Romania have the honor to share the most beautiful part of the Danube River - the Djerdap Gorge. 5. Lake Perucac and Drina Gorge cruising, Tara National Park

CRUISE THE DANUBE - DJERDAP FROM WATER

A TOUR OF THE FAMOUS DJERDAP GORGE BY BOAT ON THE DANUBE

Trajan's tablet, inscribed on a rock near the Danube in the Djerdap Gorge, is dedicated to the famous Roman emperor who left many traces on his journey through Serbia. The board originated from the time of the wars with the Dacians, and it was set between the years 100 and 103. During the construction of the dam, the Danube level rose over 20 meters, causing Trajan's highway to be submerged. Trajan's tablet, however, was moved 21 meters, in one block weighing as much as 300 tons.

Hajdučka Vodenica

This naturally favorable location in the center of the Donje Gorge canyon, beneath the cliffs of Mali Strbac (623 m), about 12 km upstream of Tekija / Transdierna, was continuously settled, from the earliest period of history (Culture of Lepenski Vir). A smaller Roman and medieval settlement, church and necropolis were also discovered at this site. The location is, among other things, famous for the valuable discovery of medieval silver and early-Byzantine gold coins, which are kept and exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Djerdap (in Kladovo). After the exploration, the site was submerged in 1970.

BALLOON STATIONS VARNICA AND PENA

Kazan is the most dramatic natural landscape of the entire Danube. It was also the most dangerous to sail before building the Iron Gates dam. The difficult navigation conditions in Kazan required a specific system of river traffic management and control. A system of six signal stations on both banks of the Danube served as a unique traffic signal on the Danube. A raised or lowered balloon was a sign for the captains to freely pass or wait for a boat passing from the opposite direction.

Kazan is the third isthmus in the Djerdap Gorge and is 20km long. It is made up of a large and small reservoir that are separated by a small valley in the Romanian village of Dubova. Below the steep slopes that rise above the river and are over 500m above sea level, there are at the bottom, strong karst springs such as Bela Voda and Hajdučki Izvor, as well as some caves - Putnik's cave and Veterani cave, from which a strong river flows. In Kazan, there were previously numerous strong whirlpools, which caused the surface of the water to be restless and look like a key, so in the Middle Ages the Turks gave this part of the Đerdap the name Kazan, meaning 'cauldron'.

DECEBAL REX

Decebalus was the last king of Dacia who ruled from 87 to 106. When Trajan came to power, his armies invaded Dacia to weaken its threat to the Roman border. Trajan conquered the Dacians in 106 AD and Decebalus committed suicide to avoid capture. His country became another in a series of Roman provinces. The most fantastic of the numerous monuments dedicated to Decebal is certainly his figure in the rock at the bay of Mraconia, symbolically carved just across the river from Trajan's tablet on the Serbian side, so that two great rulers of the old world would defy each other. The rock sculpture of Decebalus is 42.9m in height and 31.6m in width. It was completed in 2004 and took ten years to complete.

MANASTIR MRAKONIJA

Below the sculpture of Decebal Rex, there is the white monastery of Mraconia, not far from the river of the same name. It was built above the remains of a 15th-century church. After the defeat at Varna and the occupation of Constantinople in 1453, Mraconia monks found refuge at Orsova and established the Mraconia Monastery. Depending on translation, its name is believed to mean 'a dark place' or 'hidden water'. While building the Iron Gates dam, the old monastery was sacrificed and the river flooded the ruins, swallowing it entirely, so it was named by the locals "the underwater monastery". When the level of water goes down the cross-shaped ruins of the old monastery can still be seen with the naked eye. At a depth of 93 meters, it is here that the Danube is the deepest in its entire course.

Driving is accompanied by a guide, we have two routes, it's up to you to choose which route you want to drive:

- The first route is the route that starts from Tekija, an approximately 1-hour drive, with a visit to two viewpoints where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Danube itself, a break for taking pictures on the "Adrenaline swing" if you want to go with a loved one, you can bequeath your love to eternity on our "Crazy stone". On the way back, a tour of the "Faca Tekija" viewpoint. The price of the first route is 50e per quad.

- The second route also starts from Tekija, about a 2-hour drive, visiting three viewpoints, where you can see the views on two sides of the Danube (View towards the settlements of Tekija and Oršava, i.e. the lower Danube and the view towards the settlements of Golo brdo and Ešelnica, i.e. the upper Danube), tour of the mountain village "Petrovo selo", descent through the forest roads to the village of Propazešće, tour of the "Adrenaline swing" and "Crazy stone", after that return to Tekija. The price for this route is 90e per quad.

For a long time, the locals of this area and experts, thought that in the hamlet of Usak, the villages of Gornja Lopiza, existed only The Usak and Ice Caves. Destroyed during the Russian-Austrian-Turkish war between 1787-1792, it was later rebuilt and destroyed again in 1968 with its ruins flooded by the Danube. The Mraconia Monastery was again fully restored in 1995 AD. Built in the shape of a cross with an opened porch towards the Danube, the Monastery has written on its entrance: “Born and destroyed several times, the Monastery is showing today, beyond death, like security of faith, hope in resurrection and foundation of love”.

Danube`s big and small boilers.

Certainly the most beautiful and exciting part of the Danube, the boilers encompasses a 19 km long drive and sail path, providing a breathtaking scenery and magical lookouts that pass through the place where Danube is at its narrowest (only 140m) and at its deepest (90m). Before the building of the HPP “Djerdap I” in the deep whirlpools of the boilers, cod and sturgeon coming all the way from the Black Sea, spawned their eggs. The caviar was used for the production of the famous Kladovo caviar, a worldwide renowned specialty. After completion, the HPP “Djerdap I” and “Djerdap 2” discontinued the fishes ‘paths to their natural hatcheries leading to an almost complete disappearance of cod and sturgeon. Unfortunately, the Kladovo caviar ceased to exist. In the heart of the Danube`s Gorge, under Mali Strpce there lies a natural picnic area known as Haiducka Vodenica. The site where necropolises from the Mesolithic and iron age were found during archeological excavations, as well as fortification remains of the late antique period is a frequent gathering place of locals and tourists, especially fans of sport fishing and camping activities.

Trajan`s plaque.

During his conquer quests on Dacians (ancestors of today`s Romania), roman emperor Trajan built in 103 AD his own path (via Traiana) through the Iron Gate`s Gorge all the way to the place where he order the construction of the bridge over Danube (Trajan`s bridge). Honoring the success of the roman empire and Trajan himself, a written plaque carrying two winged spirits was carved to be known as Trajan`s Plaque. The plaque represents and worships the greatness of emperor Trajan. Only four of the six lines honoring Trajan`s greatness are still visible and readable. After the Hydroelectric Power Plant “Djerdap I” was built, the ancient roman road was sunk, leading to an archeological effort of lifting Trajan`s Plaque 30 m above the original location. Today the plaque is only visible from the water, during the cruises or sailing trips on the Danube.

Varnica signal staion.

Prior to the construction of the dam, the boilers were once the most dramatic natural landscape of Danube`s entire course and the most dangerous navigation area of the old river. Difficult navigation conditions, at that time, were regulated by a specific system of guidance and control of the river traffic in the form of signal stations. The system comprised of six signal stations on both banks of the Danube, served as a single traffic light on the Danube, a raised or lowered balloon being a sign to the captains to freely pass or wait for an opposite boat to pass the strait.  

Today, two so-called “balloon stations” have been preserved and serve as an infrastructural monumental heritage, being under protection of the institute for protection of cultural monuments. inside the balloon station “pena” there is an art studio of the local artist radislav trkulja while the balloon station “varnica” was renovated and works as a restaurant which welcomes tourists eager to taste the refined local specialties., rock sculpture of decebalus.

The rock sculpture of Decebalus is the tallest in Europe, third in the world, carved into a limestone rock above the gulf of Mraconia watching the Iron Gate`s Gorge. Decebalus`s face, in translation - power of the dacians, has a height of 40m being only 6m shorter than the Statue of Liberty in New York and it was carved during 1994 AD - 2004 AD, across the Danube from Trajan`s Plaque. Romania`s Mount Rushmore was financed by Iosif Constantin Dragan, one of the first controversial businessmen and millionaires from Romania, with more than million dollars. The original project was intended to present the two ancient rulers, Decebalus and Trajan, on opposite sides forever, watchfully watching, and guarding Danube`s shivering waters. Like other touristic attractions seen in the Iron Gate`s Gorge the sculpture retains the name of its donor: Decebal rex - Dragan fecit (King Decebal - made by Dragan). This amazing attraction remains one of the most imposing and loved places, being visited, and photographed by all tourists that admire the beauty of the Iron Gate`s Gorge.

The Iron Gates Gorge is the largest and longest gorge in Europe, measuring about 100 km. In the Danube sector of the Djerdap Gorge, there are four narrowed parts - gorges, which are separated by appropriate extensions - valleys. Gorges and valleys on the Danube alternate in the following order: Golubac gorge, Ljupovska valley, Gospodjin vir gorge, Valley of Donji Milanovac, Big and small boilers gorge, Orsova valley and Sip valley, known also by the Djerdap name.

In the western part of the kladovo municipality, on an area of about 64 hectares there lies the djerdap national park, the biggest in serbia, characterized by a rich ecosystem and specific flora and fauna and extremely valuable historical treasures dating from prehistoric times. djerdap national park is the area with the largest and oldest water holes in europe and the site of the largest natural and archeological museum in europe having the biggest biodiversity within one ecosystem. it is one of the most beautiful geographical areas in europe, with exceptional opportunities for several types of tourism, from hunting to fishing (respecting the rules of conduct and laws of djerdap national park) to hiking, biking, bird watching and more..

Uvac tour starts around 08h. Our official licensed guide will be waiting for you at the agreed place and after the short introduction we will begin our journey. Heading towards Uvac national park we have about 260 km to drive through Central Serbia over regional roads. Uvac is an artificial lake made by building dams on the same name river in 1981. At the same time it is a protected natural reservation which is the habitat of griffon vulture.

Ride takes around 4.5h so we will do one stop for a pause. Upon arrival to national park program starts with boat cruise over the lake. With boat we are riding about two hours until we reach the meanders. After that we will continue with walking tour around with a great views on a lake and canyon. Watching white griffon vultures during scenic ride. After hiking we are entering the Ice Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in Serbia. The Icy cave is 2500 meters long and it has been known for a long time but no one supposed that along with Uvac cave, which stretches parallel on the distance of some 100 meters, creates a unique cave system – the longest one in Serbia – 6185 meters .

The cave has all the elements of an underground castle – auditoriums, ornaments, high pillars, draperies. It is not made for tourist visits so that her visiting with guides with the help of flashlights is really something extraordinary. Considering that it is accessible exclusively by boat, the visit to this cave is a real adventure. Boat ride back to the dam and then we will visit the Zlatarsko Lake. After the tour, you will have short brake for individual activities and after it we continue our trip back to Belgrade with one short stop.
