Styx is an American rock band from Chicago, USA. Their peak of fame was during the mid-70s till the early 80s.

Styx is known for their unusual musical style: they meld pop rock with the extreme power of hard-rock guitar and elements of musical theatre. Their style of rock has been described as anything from progressive to soft rock.

The current line-up of the band consists of Chuck Panozzo, James "J.Y." Young, Tommy Shaw, Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan and Ricky Phillips. The band was started by Chuck Panozzo and his twin brother, John, in 1961 whilst the brothers were still in adolescence. The original name of the band was ‘The Tradewinds.’ In 1972 the band signed with Wooden nickel Records and became Styx, producing their first, self-entitled, album which was followed by many more.

The band’s big breakthrough in to the mainstream market, however, did not come until the release of their seventh album, ‘The Grand Illusion’ on 7 July 1977. It reached triple platinum certification. The band then went on to achieve great success from the late 70s and moving on to the 80s.

Following their sudden success, the band suffered a number of splits and reformations, especially throughout the 90s. Various band members were lost and subsequently replaced throughout this period.

To date, Styx are best known for their hit rock songs "Lady" "Come Sail Away" "Babe" , "The Best of Times" , "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Mr. Roboto", amongst many others.

Live reviews

We experienced the guys in Murphys, California on a near full moon. This is the eleventh time for me in nearly forty years and the fifth time with this lineup. Though there are songs and moments we all expect in a Styx show, there were also some nice surprises and successful road-testing of their more recent material this evening.

As always, they put on a spirited, highly professional show. The sound mix was clear and plenty loud, though a little too muddy in the bottom end for me - this might have been an issue with the house sound.

Singer-keyboardist Lawrence Gowan has emerged as the showman of the group, with Tommy Shaw is a steady yet passionate frontman. Gowan spun his keyboard, pranced about when not providing keyboard support and stood on his stool with his other foot planted on the keyboard for "Come Sail Away". The rhythm section of Ricky Phillips on bass and Todd Sucherman on drums was steady and unassailably in the pocket with the rest of the band. Their vocal harmonies and arrangements were spot-on. Founding member Chuck Panozzo took the stage for a short duet with Gowan on the brand-new "Lost at Sea". Chuck remained on stage for the later classics, including Renegade and Mr. Roboto. Most of the songs we all know rocked: The Grand Illusion, Lady, Fooling Yourself and Blue Collar Man.

They opened with the first song on their new album, "The Fight of Our Lives" and soared later in the set with "Sound The Alarm". The uplift it provided was only boosted by the rest of the songs. Also onstage with an electric guitar was Will Evankovich, who co-wrote a lot of the material from 2017's The Mission and this year's Crash of the Crown. He was curiously underused here, as the group did not play any songs that would have benefited from another set of strings. "The Red Storm", "Our Wonderful Lives" or even "Boat on a River" come to mind.

Which leads to my only quibble: The set was way too short. REO Speedwagon, the opener, played for at least ninety minutes; Styx performed for a little over an hour. They have such a great body of work and energy to spare - why didn't they play a few more songs tonight?

Styx are not only know as legendary recording artists, but as legendary rock performers. With such a prolific career it would be easy to see how they could slip over the years. However, I was able to see them recently and I can assure you, they have lost nothing.

I went to the concert a bit skeptical. Could the Styx I love still bring the rock? As I stood waiting for the show to start I noticed the crowd was a lot of young kids and older adults. It’s impressive that a band like Styx can bring together multiple generations. Everybody seemed real fans of the band. No one just standing around with there arms crossed like you see at a lot of concerts.

The second the band took the stage everyone took to their feet. The band didn’t wait a moment to engage us. With a “Are you ready to rock?” they jumped right into “Blue Collar Man”, one of my favorites. From then on the show was an hour straight of all the songs you remembered and some you had even forgot you knew. There was really something for everyone. The concert ended with an energy-overloaded performance of “Come Sail Away” followed by the radio favorite “Mr. Roboto”. Even after the show stopped and the lights came up, everyone was still talking about the set list. While it may sound crazy, seeing Styx live should be something everyone does before they die.

What an amazing show! The opening act for United We Rock was Don Felder and wow! He sounded great and he played all of the Eagles massive hits.

Then Styx came out and the crowd went nuts! They started off with their new hit song "Gone, Gone, Gone" and their set just kept getting better as they went on! I've seen several Styx shows and each time I cant imagine they getting better, but they do! Tommy Shaw apologized that he had had a cold, but honestly, you couldn't prove it by me. His voice was just as strong and true as ever! The applause was thunderous when they ended and they came out for an encore of the best version I've ever heard of "Paradise Theater"and their signature end of show "Renegade".

The last was REO Speedwagon. They were wonderful as well. I am a massive Styx fan so I didn't know as many of REO's songs I did enjoy it very much.

The only thing I would have changed was that Styx would have been the headliner. People seemed to be leaving a third of the way through REO's set. Of course it could have been that the concert was on a Tuesday night and I'm sure not everyone was able to take the next day off and it did take almost 30 minutes to get out of the parking lot.

All in all this was an epic show and I will certainly attend more Styx shows!

Followed the boys for 3 shows. Catoosa, Enid, and Durant. Each show was better than the one before. Styx still rocks the house better than anyone. Tommy Shaw still has a awesome voice, JY makes the guitar sound better than ever, Lawrence Gowen is a awesome keyboardist, Ricky's bass playing kicks you in gear, Todd Sucherman is one of the most fantastic drummers I've ever had the pleasure to watch, and it was great to see Chuck still out there laying it down. I cannot express how awesome these guys are! It's also refreshing to them still having fun after all these years. Catch them if you get a chance, you will not be disappointed.

The concert was wonderful! They each still have the talent of their youth. The vocals and guitar were still very impressive. I became a fan later in their career, so they played a lot of music I didn't know, but I enjoyed it all. They have so much good music to pick from, they didn't play all of my favorites. I missed "Babe" and "Best of Times" in particular, but I would have also loved to hear "Don't Let It End" and "Mr. Roboto," which I didn't expect them to play anyway. They had some showmanship as well, so I can easily recommend seeing their show.

As always Styx was phenomenal. Celebrity theater doesn’t have a bad seat in the house. They haven’t lost a step. They still sound like they did in the seventies. Great stage show and fan friendly. They reach out to the crowd and fist bump high five. Each song takes you back when rock was rock. Phoenix loves Styx so much they sell out back to back shows every time. Going to the second show tonight. If you get a chance to see them don’t miss it. They are the best.

My husband, our friends and family, as well as myself, ALL LOVED Styx!! We just recently saw them last year on A Carnival Cruise, as well! They are great. My only complaint is that we were unable to see them due to the venue, Sleeptrain Ampitheater being a VERY Large Ampitheater and there was nothing of them put up on the Jumbotrons for the people out on the grass or in the top back seats. That was a bummer. Other than that, they sounded amazing!!

First time seeing the legendary Styx. I have always enjoyed their mysic in the past, but would not have considered myself a huge fan. The times, they have changed.

Musically, better than listening to anything that had been recorded. Showmanship was better than most young bands out now.

Styx has gained my greater appreciation of their music & their live show. I will definitely pay to see them everytime they come through the NW.

This was the second time that I have seen STYX, and it was great again!! They are incredible musicians and wonderful singers. However, if you are hoping to hear some of their pop hits (Babe and Mr. Roboto for example), you will not hear them. The older rock hits are showstoppers and they rocked them hard!! If you are a fan of the rock hits, you will love the concert. I did!!!

sj-shuss’s profile image

Styx was awesome! Like they always are. However, the sound was inconsistent as far as volume. I know it was windy but there was something else going on.

Again Styx was great. I last saw them about 16 years ago. The are so consistent, they play the songs from 40 years ago like they just wrote them! Highly recommend seeing Styx.

John Waite declares: "Looking forward to blazing across the USA with my band this summer. All the hits in all the cities. It will be major. A great night. Don't miss it — be there!"

"We always look forward to being with our buddies in STYX ," Hansen told Ultimate Classic Rock . "We've done so many things with them. They're absolute professionals, which is what you want. You want to be on the road with someone you can count on — not some crazy, weird, ego-driven, maniacal bullshit fest, that every day there’s some new thing you have to deal with. They're just spot on … but they're also very funny, very affable guys."

STYX 's Tommy Shaw said about the tour with FOREIGNER : "I heard 'Cold As Ice' and I remember listening to that and going, 'Who is that?' I was blown away. That was my first exposure to FOREIGNER . The hits just kept coming after that. When I finally got to see them live, I thought, 'Man, this is somebody that we can hopefully eventually work with.' It's so nice that the music still lives and we can all go on these kinds of tours."

In a recent interview with Shawn Ratches of Laughingmonkeymusic , FOREIGNER bassist Jeff Pilson spoke about the band's farewell tour, which officially launched in July. Asked if it is bittersweet for him to be playing what will turn out to be some of his final shows with FOREIGNER , he said: "It is bittersweet. I mean, the band is actually sounding, playing, singing, getting along better than [ever]. We're in a fantastic place right now."

Pilson , who has been performing while seated on a stool as the result of a recent back injury, continued: "This tour has been so much fun this year. I mean, it is — it's gonna be bittersweet. The audiences have been great, the crowds are great, but it will be nice to not travel as much. A hundred shows a year for 20 years, that's a lot. I'm ready to slow that down. And we'll see exactly where we go from here, but I know that after next year, 'cause we're gonna go till the end of 24, but I know after next year, no more of the long tours. And yes, it's bittersweet, but, again, I'm just trying to really appreciate it right now and enjoy it 'cause it's been so much fun. And I've even been in a fricking wheelchaIr, and it's been fun. So I've gotta say. Doing good."

This past September, Pilson told the Idaho radio station 94.9 FM and 104.5 FM The Pick about FOREIGNER 's farewell tour: "Well, this isn't the very final leg, but yes, it is the farewell tour and we do mean it. But it's gonna go at least till the end of 2024, so it may not be the last time you see us, but yes, we are seriously calling it a day. We wanna go out while we're still on top, so the feeling is very strong that that's what we're gonna do. And I stand by that because I think it's a show of integrity."

Asked if FOREIGNER 's fall 2024 Las Vegas residency will mark the band's final performances, Pilson said: "No. No, no. Well, not necessarily. We don't really know yet. But we know that we're gonna do eight shows at the beginning of 2024, the end of March and early April, and then we have another residency later in 2024, the end of October and early November. So, yeah, quite, quite a bit of Vegas residency next year, which is pretty exciting. But I don't know if that's gonna be the absolute last show or not, but possibly."

He added: "And just because we're doing a farewell tour doesn't mean that we're doing a complete retirement. I mean, we still may do occasional shows here and there — you know, special events or whatever. It's just this is the end of that 'nine months in the year you're on the road' kind of thing."

FOREIGNER will bid goodbye to the Las Vegas Strip with an exclusive headlining two-part "Feels Like The Last Time Farewell Tour" residency at The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. The shows will be held March 6 through April 6, and October 25 through November 9, 2024 at 8:30 p.m.

Joining Pilson and guitarist Mick Jones in the band's current lineup are Hansen , Michael Bluestein on keyboards, guitarist Bruce Watson , Chris Frazier on drums and guitarist Luis Maldonado .

In July, Hansen was asked by Mike Hsu of 100 FM The Pike if he and his FOREIGNER bandmates already know where and when the final show of the farewell tour will take place. Hansen said: "We're just starting to kind of wrap our brains around what that might be. And listen, there's a lot of pressure from a lot of different areas to get me to continue to do this. And I can't see that I'm gonna continue to do this. So we're now looking… 'Cause when you're a band like FOREIGNER , you're already booking a year in advance. So we're already deeply into 2024. But we haven't decided yet where the last show's gonna be."

The only remaining original member of FOREIGNER , Jones suffered from some health issues beginning in 2011, eventually resulting in heart surgery in 2012. Ever since, it is never announced whether he will be appearing with the band for specific shows — it just depends how he is feeling.

Hansen told 100 FM The Pike about Jones : "He's with us whenever he's able to be with us. And he is still the architect of this band. And he and I have worked closely for many years. And the great thing about it is that we've always been very simpatico about our ideas and about how we think things should be done. So, yeah, whenever he can be with us, he is."

After singer Lou Gramm left FOREIGNER in 2003, Jones took some time off before regrouping a couple years later with an entirely new lineup, featuring Hansen and Pilson , among others.

Gramm was the voice on FOREIGNER 's biggest hits, including "Feels Like The First Time" and "Cold As Ice" from the band's eponymous debut in 1977, and later songs like "Hot Blooded" and "I Want To Know What Love Is" .

The six men comprising STYX have committed to rocking the paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. STYX draws from over four decades of barnburning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a STYX set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is "The Grand Illusion" to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the "Blue Collar Man" , from the majestic spiritual love for a special "Lady" to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry's sake of "Miss America" , from an individual yearning for true connection as a "Man In The Wilderness" to a soul-deep quest to achieve what's at the heart of one's personal vision in "Crystal Ball" , from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of "Come Sail Away" to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged "Renegade" who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one's mind and body in their signature sound.

A new era of hope, survival, and prosperity comes calling with the release of "Crash Of The Crown" , STYX 's new studio album, which was written pre-pandemic and recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. The legendary and multi-platinum rockers — James "JY" Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards), Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals),and Will Evankovich (guitars/mandolin) — released their 17th album June 18, 2021 on the band's label, Alpha Dog 2T / Ume , which is available as clear vinyl, black vinyl, CD, and on digital platforms.

STYX 's holy mission for cutting "Crash Of The Crown" was crystal-clear to its co-creator from the get-go. "Absolutely no obstacles were going to get in the way of how we approached creating this album," Shaw concludes about the herculean recording efforts of his fellow "Crash Of The Crown" makers. "And everything came out exactly the way we wanted to hear it."

Styx guitarist, singer and songwriter Tommy Shaw rocks out onstage.

Styx is on a humble mission in 2023.

They’re simply trying to take over the world “one amphitheater at a time.”

And the classic rockers should be able to accomplish that goal with relative ease on their upcoming 29-concert North American Tour from January through July.

On the road, expect to hear all the classics you know and love from the rockers like “Mr. Roboto,” “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Lady” and “Too Much Time On My Hands” as well as a track or two from their 2021 album “Crash of the Crown.”

Still not sold?

Well, we should mention that ticket prices for some concerts are as low as $17 before fees on Vivid Seats at the time of publication.

We knew that would work.

So, if you want to see the unclassifiable group — are they hard rock, pop or both? — live this year, here’s everything you need to know.

Styx 2023 concert schedule

Starting Jan. 6 in Corbin, KY , Styx will work their way all over North America up until their July 15 Chippewa Falls, WI gig which closes the run.

Before that final show, the group that brought the world “Mr. Roboto” will swing into notable locales like Orlando (Jan. 18), Las Vegas (Jan. 27 through Feb. 4), Phoenix (March 9-10), Grand Prairie, TX (April 13) and Columbia, SC (April 21).

A complete Styx calendar featuring all upcoming tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Styx current band lineup

Having been formed over 50 years ago in Chicago, IL, Styx has clearly seen a lot of turnover in the past half century since day one in 1972.

Who will you see if you catch the band live in 2023?

Great question.

These days, the group is made up of Chuck Panozzo (bass, Styx co-founder), James “J.Y.” Young (lead guitarist, original member of Styx), Tommy Shaw (co-lead vocalist, joined the group in 1975), Todd Sucherman (drummer since 1995), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocalist, keyboardist since 1999), Ricky Phillips (bass guitarist since 2003) and Will Evankovich (singer-songwriter since 2021).

While we can’t guarantee all of the above will be present at the show of your choosing, we’d put money on a variation of the core seven appearing at the concert you attend.

You can explore all things Styx on the band’s site here .

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

Even though most of these groups got their start over 50 years ago, they’re still rocking as hard as they were in a pre-Reagan world.

And while there are plenty of classic rock acts on tour in 2023, here are our five favorites you won’t want to miss live when they come to a city near you.

•  Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

•  Dead and Company

•  Billy Joel with Stevie Nicks

•  Jimmy Buffett

Styx and Foreigner Announce Summer 2024 Tour

Styx and Foreigner will hit the road next summer for a lengthy run of dates with special guest John Waite .

The Renegades & Juke Box Heroes tour kicks off June 11 in Grand Rapids, Mich., and is set to wrap on Aug. 28 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Tickets go on sale Friday, Dec. 8. Additional pre-sale information is available at the Foreigner and Styx websites. A complete list of dates and the tour's announcement video is below.

“We always look forward to being with our buddies in Styx,” Foreigner vocalist Kelly Hansen told UCR as the two bands prepare for their first tour together since 2014 . “We’ve done so many things with them. They’re absolute professionals, which is what you want. You want to be on the road with someone you can count on – not some crazy, weird, ego-driven, maniacal bullshit fest, that every day there’s some new thing you have to deal with. They’re just spot on … but they’re also very funny, very affable guys.”

In a separate UCR interview, Styx’s Tommy Shaw promised “a hell of a night of classic rock music. I heard ‘Cold as Ice’ and I remember listening to that and going, ‘Who is that?’ I was blown away. That was my first exposure to Foreigner. The hits just kept coming after that. When I finally got to see them live, I thought, ‘Man, this is somebody that we can hopefully eventually work with.’ It’s so nice that the music still lives and we can all go on these kinds of tours.”

This marks the latest chapter in Foreigner’s ongoing farewell tour, which was announced in 2022 . “It’s been a little bit of an emotional roller coaster,” Hansen admitted, “because as much as I want to stop touring nine months of the year, there’s also a level of recognition about what we've done and what we're doing – and the gratitude and understanding of what it's meant for us in our lives. … I'm on stage with my friends that I love and it's a huge, huge thing every night.”

Both Styx and Foreigner Are Working on New Music

With Styx now past the 50-year mark as a group, Shaw laughed when asked if they have similar farewell plans. “I have no end in sight,” he said. “It will probably be when they drag me off to the funeral home. I’d gladly go that way,” he said with a chuckle.

One thing they both agree on is that there are still new tracks waiting to be finished. “We’re always writing a song,” Shaw said, noting that idle time on the road tends to birth many ideas. “We've gone out and played and played and have had a chance to have these little nuggets come out. Now we have a list of them, and we're going to start fleshing them out and getting them recorded. And there we go … another year, you know?”

Foreigner's path to the studio is a little bit less defined. “We’ve written and worked on and been in the studio and been on the road and written on the road and written off the road,” Hansen said. “A lot of those things sometimes, because we tour so much, it's very hard to get everybody together to finish something. So there's a lot of stuff that's in different states of completion. I hope that we're gonna get to a lot of those things.”

Local News | Foreigner and Styx bring musical arms race to Michigan

styx tour dates

Gary Johnson, the president of the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in Bay City, told The Morning Sun that “it was next to impossible to be listening to your car radio during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and not hear a song by either Foreigner or Styx.”

“Both bands had a penchant for crafting interesting albums along with catchy singles that enabled them to dominate playlists on both AM and FM stations,” he said.

Darcy Irland-Risener of Flint added that their hits, from “Come Sail Away” to “Juke Box Hero,” “Renegade” to “Hot Blooded,”completely saturated the airwaves of Michigan’s department stores, coffee shops, clubs, and restaurants at the same time.

However, numerous Michigan residents told The Morning Sun that they would not have chosen to escape Foreigner and Styx’s music even if they could have — and they cannot wait to see them perform.

Michigan Mania

Sharon Bell of Metro Detroit said that Foreigner has been her favorite band for over 40 years.

“My brother, a true music lover, bought me my very first album,” she said. “It happened to be Foreigner’s very first album, which I fell in love with.”

Connie Erwin-Flanagan of Niles said that her brothers introduced her to Styx when she was about 12 years old and that she has followed the band ever since.

“The first album I bought with my own money was The Grand Illusion,” she recalled.

Erwin-Flanagan also reminisced about helping the now-defunct JD’s Pizza deliver food to Styx guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw when he lived in Niles.

“He was very nice,” she said. “He would usually order a sausage and pepperoni, sometimes just a pepperoni. He always tipped really good. He’s such a down to Earth guy.”

As Michigan residents visit their former heroes at a string of Great Lakes State shows in the coming weeks, they should know that, while they were busy idolizing these two bands 40 years ago, those musical acts were similarly busy admiring each other.

Foreigner Admired Styx

Lou Gramm, Foreigner’s lead singer from its founding in 1976 to 1990 and then again from 1992 to 2003, told The Morning Sun that he greatly appreciated Styx’s talent.

Lou Gramm

“I always thought their musicianship was good, and their vocals were exemplary,” he said about the band founded four years before Foreigner.

“Their repertoire seemed to get better as time went by,” he continued. “Every album made me give it a second listen because I heard things in there that I really liked.”

Styx Admired Foreigner

Gramm may have heard Styx on the radio before the Chicago-founded band even knew who he was.

Nevertheless, Styx founding member, lead guitarist, and vocalist James Young told The Morning Sun that Foreigner came on Styx’s radar soon after the group released its self-titled 1977 debut album.

“They had some great rock songs, and their lead singer was fantastic,” he said. “And they had very strong guitar playing in Mick Jones.”

“Collectively, they wrote great songs, and they recorded great sounding records,” he continued. “I love that band.”

Foreigner Plays Catch-Up

Foreigner matched Styx’s musical success rapidly.

While Styx had one top 20 hit in the first four years of its musical career — “Lady,” which peaked at Number Six — all three of Foreigner’s debut album singles (“Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold As Ice,” and “Long, Long Way from Home”) hit the top 20.

“We were maybe a little more adventurous with the structure we applied where Foreigner’s [songs] are a little more predictable,” Young said. “Maybe that makes them a little more friendly to the average listener.”

“I think we were more of a vocal band, in a way, than Foreigner was,” he continued. “They were about a lead singer, but we were about the harmonies, in a sense, a little bit more, and trying to not be just one-trick ponies.”

A Hitmaking Arms Race

“Michael J,” a nationally syndicated iHeart Radio host heard on Central Michigan’s 98.5 WUPS-FM, told The Morning Sun that, by 1977, Foreigner and Styx seemed to be engaged in nothing short of a hitmaking arms race. When one band would break new ground, the other would quickly follow.

“Styx and Foreigner’s battle for ticket sales and the radio airwaves ignited in March of 1977” when Foreigner released its first single,” he said. “I vividly remember the debut of both of these ‘arena rockers’ because they were my first two concerts consecutively.”

Styx dropped its breakout record, The Grand Illusion, which counted the title track plus “Come Sail Away” and “Fooling Yourself” as hit singles, just four months after Foreigner released its breakthrough debut album.

Young said that, when recording The Grand Illusion, the band did not make a concerted effort to become a more mainstream-friendly group.

“We were kind of learning as we went along,” he said. “There was no premeditation to this whole thing.”

“To think that it was all pre-thought through before we got started— no, we were just trying to write another good song and then find a way to deliver it in a way that might catch somebody’s ear currently at that time,” he continued.

Which band had the more successful rise to fame? It depends on who you ask.

While Foreigner edged out The Grand Illusion commercially and in Billboard Hot 200 placement (number four for the former, number six for the latter), Michael J said he believed Styx offered morestage presence and overall concert excitement.

The Foreigner-Styx musical arms race continued the following year when Foreigner’s Double Vision (featuring “Hot Blooded,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” and the successful title track) and Styx’s Pieces of Eight (“Blue Collar Man,” “Renegade”) battled it out on the charts.

On Top of the World

In 1981, this friendly musical rivalry reached its climax.

Styx, still riding the high of releasing Paradise Theater (“The Best of Times,” “Too Much Time on My Hands”), its first number-one album, watched Foreigner drop the first number-one record of its own months later.

That album, 4, included “Juke Box Hero,” “Urgent,” and “Waiting for a Girl Like You.”

This competition-not-competition between the two groupsultimately resulted in a near-statistical tie in Billboard standings – one Number One single (“I Want to Know What Love Is”) and nine top ten hits for Foreigner, and one Number One (“Babe”) and eight top tens for Styx.

Catch Them Live!

This spring and summer, Michigan residents can hang with these rockers at a series of shows.

Styx will play at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4. Then, the band will return to Michigan in June with Foreigner for the first show of their Renegades-Juke Box Heroes tour, which will stop in Grand Rapids on June 11 and Clarkston on June 15.

Gramm will not reunite with his former bandmates for a few songs like he did at two 2017 Mt. Pleasant gigs to commemorate Foreigner’s 40th anniversary. However, on August 23, he will perform a full set of Foreigner classics in Clarkston with Poison’s Bret Michaels.

Gramm said that, after 52 years of being on the road, he will retire from touring later this year.

“I can’t say that I could go another 10 years, or five years even,” he said. I’ve run the course.”

Foreigner keyboardist Michael Bluestein told The Morning Sun that, after this tour, his band will reduce the number of shows it performs annually.

Young said that he will, to quote “Come Sail Away,” carry on with Styx.

“I do a lot of reading about what medical supplements to take, like vitamin D3 and K2,” said the guitarist, who played the role of Doctor Righteous for Styx’s 1983 rock opera and concept album Kilroy Was Here. “I’m in my 70s, but I love doing what I do and go out of my way to stay physically in shape.”

Mammoth Music Legacies

While some of these acts may be beginning to dissipate from the road, Bret Hoag, a music lecturer at the University of Michigan, told The Morning Sun that their legacies and impact on the modern-day music scene have demonstrated no signs of evaporating.

“At the University of Michigan, in my intermediate guitar classes, students had to learn and perform rock tunes to know for one of their projects,” he said. “Multiple times, 18- to 22-year-old students wanted to learn Foreigner and Styx’s songs.”

“They are bands that remain relevant.”
