The Killers announce new album, tour dates after being 'faced with silence' from pandemic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ( WZTV ) — The Killers announced their new album "Pressure Machine" and unveiled their North American tour dates Monday.

The band's seventh studio album will be released on August 13. "Pressure Machine" is inspired by memories and the people of Nephi, Utah - the hometown of frontman Brandon Flowers. He says the shutdowns and silence of the COVID-19 pandemic served as a reminder of the small, no-traffic light town he spent years growing up in as a child.

“Everything came to this grinding halt,” Brandon Flowers says. “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence. And out of that silence, this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”

The coronavirus pandemic slowed the momentum of The Killers' critically-acclaimed 2020 album "Imploding the Mirage" and stalled their world tour. Weaved with commentary from current Nephi locals, the new character-study driven album is expected to show the rock band's most musical restraint yet while painting a picture of the tight-knit community.

“We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.” Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender. But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

To celebrate "Pressure Machine" and "Imploding the Mirage," The Killers will hit the road for a North American tour next year. Featuring both fan favorites and new songs, the tour will stop at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on September 17, 2022. Tickets are slated to go on sale Friday, July 23.

The Killers kicked off a two-night stand at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York, on Saturday night by honoring another band that played the same venue 60 years earlier.

“Some of you might know the history of the place,” Killers frontman Brandon Flowers told the crowd. “Obviously there were some amazing tennis matches that took place here. When we think about that historic Beatles performance at Shea Stadium, that was in 1965. But in 1964, 60 years ago, the Beatles did two nights here at Forest Hills. We thought that we would pay our respects. I don’t think there’s a person here that wasn’t influenced by them in some way or another. Here you go.”

The Killers then played “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which they’d never before covered in concert. (They had done “Helter Skelter,” “Get Back,” “In My Life,” “Michelle,” and “When I’m Sixty-Hour” at various points in the past.)

The Killers show took place just a little over two weeks past the exact 60th anniversary of the Beatles shows. In addition to “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” they also played Erasure’s 1988 classic “A Little Respect” and a long string of their own hits, including “Somebody Told Me,” “Read My Mind,” “All Things Things That I’ve Done,” “When You Were Young,” “Human,” and, of course, “Mr. Brightside.”

They play the Forest Hills Stadium again Sunday night, and then take a two-week break before headlining the Ocean Calling Festival in Ocean City, Maryland, on September 28. The band heads off to Mexico in October before journeying to Australia in late November to cap off the year.

The Killers Are Touring Australia In 2024 So Prepare To Fight Literally Everyone For Tickets

The Killers will be touring Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Townsville — yes, Townsville — this November and December, touring a Rebel Diamonds ‘best of’ concert. In Sydney and Melbourne, they’ll also be playing a second night, performing Hot Fuss in its entirety (with “a few extra surprises” thrown in).

Frontier member presale kicks off Tuesday 10 2024 from 3pm AEST, with general tickets from Thursday 12 September at 4pm AEST.

Prepare to go to war with the rest of Australia for these tickets, but hey — at least if you miss out, you’ll be able to hear “Mr Brightside” sung by every drunk cousin at every wedding you ever attend, just as Brandon Flowers intended.

The Killers announce 2024 Australian tour dates with a new city on the tour

The Killers have announced they are returning to Australia for a four-city tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album.

The American rock band will headline shows in November and December, in Sydney (Qudos Bank Arena), Melbourne (Rod Laver Arena), Brisbane (Brisbane Entertainment Centre) and Townsville (Queensland Country Bank Stadium), with six shows in total.

Sydney and Melbourne will host two concerts each – one called Rebel Diamonds, a journey through The Killers’ extensive archives of chart-toppers, and another in which they will play all of Hot Fuss, their 2024 debut record, as well as some extras.

Brisbane and Townsville will have the Rebel Diamonds concert. It is the first time the band has played a show in Townsville.

Pre-sale tickets are available tomorrow, Tuesday September 9 from 3pm by signing up through either The Killers’ website or through the promoters, Frontier Touring. The general sale starts on Thursday, September 12 from 4pm.

Throughout their two-decade career, The Killers have released seven studio albums. The most recent was Pressure Machine in 2021 while a new single, “Bright Lights”, hit the charts last month.

The Killers’ debut single, “Mr Bightside”, was released in September 2003 and remains the band’s best-selling record. Rolling Stone in 2021 named it the 378th best song of the 21st century.

The Killers was most recently in Australia in December 2022 and before that in 2018. They also played the AFL grand final in 2017.

The Killers paid tribute to The Beatles during their show at New York’s Forest Hills Stadium over the weekend – watch their cover of ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ below.

The Las Vegas band kicked off their two-night stay at the Queens venue on Saturday night (September 14) by honouring The Beatles, who did two nights there themselves 60 years earlier.

The Killers then covered The Beatles’ 1963 track ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand‘, one they’d never covered live before. In the past, they’d covered other Beatles tracks, including ‘Helter Skelter’ – which they played with Paul McCartney himself in 2016 – ‘Get Back‘, ‘In My Life‘, ‘Michelle’, and ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’ . Meanwhile, the band also covered Erasure ’s 1998 track ‘A Little Respect‘, and played many of their own biggest hits, like ‘Mr. Brightside’, ‘Somebody Told Me’, and ‘Human‘.

There was a poignant meaning to their song choice at Forest Hills, however. When The Beatles played the stadium on August 28 and 29, 1964, it was in the set on both nights.

Their shows were just two of many big concerts at Forest Hills that summer, with other artists playing there including Barbra Streisand , Joan Baez with Bob Dylan , Harry Belafonte with Miriam Makeba, Johnny Mathis, Count Basie and Trini Lopez.

And after the Beatles’ first show, Dylan visited them at the Delmonico Hotel nearby and allegedly introduced them to cannabis , something the band later described as opening up their minds and turning them on to more experimental sounds.

The Killers, meanwhile, are playing Oceans Calling Festival in Maryland and Evolution Festival in Missouri to round off the month, before a run of shows in Mexico in October, and then a series of Australian dates in December . The iconic multi-platinum-selling group America will celebrate their 54 th anniversary with a series of tour dates in 2024. Known for their timeless magic and powerful performances, the Grammy Award-winning perennial classic-rock favorite will draw on their deep catalog of hits including signature song “A Horse With No Name,” a Number One hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1972.

On their way to becoming a global household name, America’s journey found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes, which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions.
