A Community Baby Shower Across America

The MOMS Tour (Maternal Outcomes Matter Showers) is a Community Baby Shower Tour that will target new and expectant mothers in communities with high maternal and morbidity rates.

Serving Those at Greatest Risk

The tour is focused on reducing the unacceptably high maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the U.S., especially among Black and American Indian/Alaska Native moms. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Black women are three times and AI/AN women are two times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women, and over 80% of those deaths are preventable. The M.O.M.S. Tour will intentionally serve those at greatest risk: Black and AI/ AN moms in urban and rural communities.

the m m's tour

Here's an inside look at how M&M's are made

Most of us know (and love) M&M's — those tiny, colorful chocolates that "melt in your mouth, not in your hand."

But very few of us are familiar with the process of how they're made.

Lucky for you, Business Insider  recently visited the Mars Chocolate North America campus in Hackettstown, New Jersey, where 50% of all M&M's sold in the US are made.

Mars Chocolate — a segment of the $33 billion Mars candy, pet care, and beverage company — is the producer of M&M's, along with 10 other billion-dollar brands including Snickers, Dove, Milky Way, and Twix.

The Mars Chocolate North America campus, which opened in 1958 and employs 1,200 people, is home to a corporate office as well as the M&M's factory.

While touring the campus, we learned that the M&M's brand was founded by Forrest E. Mars, Sr. in 1941, and that it was the first candy in space in 1982.

Leighanne Eide, the Mars Chocolate North America site director, walked us through the factory and explained each step of the process. We were restricted from taking photos of certain top-secret areas — but below you'll get a better idea of how the M&M's-making process works:

The smell of sweet chocolate hit us as we approached the factory, which is a few hundred yards from the Mars Chocolate office in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

the m m's tour

Upon entering the factory, we were asked to remove all jewelry. Next, Eide examined our fingernails to see if we were wearing nail polish. (They don't want chipped nail polish getting mixed in with the product.) Mine were polished, so I was asked to wear gloves. We were also required to wear a Mars-branded lab coat, like all factory associates.

the m m's tour

Next we were given hard hats, safety glasses, ear plugs, and hair nets.

the m m's tour

Everyone who enters the factory is required to wear this gear.

the m m's tour

Before heading in, we were asked to wash our hands (even if we were wearing gloves for the tour).

the m m's tour

The tour finally begins! We start by walking down this colorful hallway lined with lively paintings of M&M's characters.

the m m's tour

The Hackettstown plant creates M&M's Milk Chocolate, M&M’s Minis, and Peanut M&M’s, as well as 21 different colors and custom print products.

the m m's tour

"Mixing and tempering the chocolate are key," Eide explains. "Conching" is the first part of the process, when all of the raw material for chocolate is mixed together.

the m m's tour

The chocolate is then sent to standardizing. where it is tempered to the correct temperature needed to create the desired shape of M&M's.

the m m's tour

Next, the chocolates are sent through the cooling tunnels to ensure they are cooled and ready for the coloring process.

the m m's tour

Eide let us try the M&M's chocolates at every stage in the process. "Fresh" and "sweet" don't even begin to describe how they tasted.

the m m's tour

Once the chocolates are cooled, they are given their signature colors — a process that can't be rushed.

the m m's tour

The coloring drips slowly until the pieces are vibrant.

the m m's tour

The signature colors are yellow, red, green, brown, orange, and blue, the newest color. Blue was introduced in 1995 after consumers voted on a color to replace the tan M&M's, which had been around since the late 1940s.

the m m's tour

For Peanut M&M's, the nuts — which are mainly supplied to Hackettstown from the Southeast region of the US — go through a roasting process. Then they are sprayed with chocolate three times to get the right chocolate-to-nut ratio.

the m m's tour

"Millions of M&M's are made here each day," Eide says. The factory, which is approximately 460,000 square feet, is very loud and sweet-smelling. "The odor gets into your clothes, and it might be pleasant now, but once you get home it smells more like spoiled milk," one associate explains.

the m m's tour

A lot of the process is proprietary and we were not allowed to see — or photograph — certain areas of the factory. "For such a small piece of chocolate, M&M's are surprisingly sophisticated," Eide explains. "We can't share all of the details behind the production process because we want to keep the magic and mystery behind the 'M' alive." For instance, she says, everyone always wants to know how they place the "M" on each M&M," but that's still top secret,"she says.

the m m's tour

One the "M" is placed on each candy, the pieces are packaged and sent across the country.

the m m's tour

"M&M's today taste just as great as they did when the first M&M's were produced in 1941 and that’s a direct result of our extreme focus on delivering consistent, outstanding quality," Eide says.

the m m's tour

From start to finish, she says, it takes anywhere from 10 to 12 hours to create a bag of M&M's.

I already was around at the time but was wondering if she did these gigs to rebel or because she just wanted to something? And do you think we can expect something like this in the future? These M+M’s gigs were kinda strange (but fun) back in the day and it was indeed all Britney, didn’t she paid for it herself? Are there any Exhalers still around who were lucky enough to witness it? How was it?

omg what a concidence. Just finished watching some 12min fan videos on YT.

Was wondering the same but I felt like she just wanted to connect with fans. No high profile performances but just short intimate and heated atmosphere.

I read the 40 dollars tickets were resold for 500dollars even and the show was like 12 minutes hah

I love these stories! But I didn’t attend?

People say her label forced her to do this and she did it but the way she wanted to which was the agreement (allegedly just rumors we don’t know much details) I also find it interesting that when Sam Lutfi posted those cds on twitter there was a cd marked as blackout tour or something

LOS ANGELES (AP) — At a 24,000-square-foot studio near downtown Los Angeles, Missy Elliott , Busta Rhymes and Ciara are preparing to film the video announcement for a tour no one saw coming.

This summer, the trio — along with legendary producer Timbaland — will hit the road for Elliott’s first headlining arena tour, appropriately titled “Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience.”

“Listen, I didn’t realize I never had my own tour,” says a smiling Elliott, holding her tiny Yorkie, named Fendi, dressed in Gucci. “The last real tour that I went on — like, consistent days — was with Beyoncé and Alicia (Keys).”

That was in 2004.

Call it long overdue, but the timing is ideal. Over the last few years, Elliott — the forward-seeking artist — has been recognized for her talents as a musician, producer, songwriter and beyond .

In 2019, she became the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2021, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, named a boulevard after her. Last year, she became the first female hip-hop artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Getting those accolades, I feel like I’ve finally made it,” Elliott says. “It feels amazing. I feel so blessed.”

This image released by RCA Records shows "Older" by Lizzy McAlpine. (RCA Records via AP)

“What we’re seeing now is kind of the rest of the world catching up,” says Mona Scott-Young, Elliott’s longtime manager and co-producer of the tour. “She’s always been ahead.”

In his green room, Busta Rhymes tells the AP that a tour had never come up in conversation across his decades of friendship and collaboration with Elliott. (He’s the intro and outro voice on her canonical debut album, 1997’s “Supa Dupa Fly.” They’ve long since been inseparable.)

“She doesn’t really tour and she doesn’t perform often. I just kind of understood my sister — the unspoken thing,” he says. “You knew that if she decided to do this, go to the place where she was actually ready to tour, the s--- was going to be crazy because one thing Missy never did was play with her production. And you saw that in everything she did, from her shows to her videos.”

He continued: “Missy will turn down $10 million to do a show. … She’s super in control of her destiny in that way, and without compromise, is what made her super incredibly great. You can’t do nothing but love her for that. She’s a true artist in the purest form of the word.”

And make no mistake, this isn’t a nostalgia tour.

“We are in the best spaces in our lives, individually and collectively, we’re at the most experienced spaces in our lives,” Rhymes says. “We’re no longer Daniel-san. We’re now all Mr. Miyagi senseis. You know what I’m saying? We’re all at our perfection levels of what we’ve been doing and building together as a collective family for 30 years.”

Elliott echoed the sentiment.

“The lineup feels something special,” says Elliott. “It’s family. It’s not put together.”

On set, the trio are styled by longtime collaborator June Ambrose — all-black looks, like if the Avengers were impeccably dressed and made up of R&B and hip-hop legends. They take photos as a group and individually.

After her solo photo shoot, Ciara starts to tear up.

“When I was a little girl, a little artist coming up, and you would ask me, ‘Who inspires you?’ I would infuse a combination of people: Michael Jackson and Prince and I would say Missy Elliott. She’s one of the best performers of all time,” she said.

“She means a lot to me as an artist but also as a person, as a sister. She’s always someone I can call for the truth, and she’s got to keep it real with me. She’s someone I can call and cry to if I need to.”

But ask her if there will be any on-stage collaborations — Elliott wrote and was featured on Ciara’s huge hit “1, 2 Step”; Ciara’s on Elliott’s “Lose Control” — she laughs. “Missy’s very particular. I don’t want to ruin any surprises,” she says. “I think from beginning to end, people will be on their feet. All of us have a lot of energetic records.”

“Somebody’s gonna die!” Rhymes jokes.

“And come back to life,” Ciara cuts in.

“Let’s keep it positive,” Rhymes laughs. “Someone is gonna die and come back to life.”

Later, Elliott offers a hint at what fans can expect from the show. “It’s an experience, it’s not just you seeing the artist on the stage,” she says. “I want people to travel to those moments, those (music) videos , I want you to relive it on stage. It is most definitely a lot of good, good stuff. Expensive stuff!”

The “Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience” kicks off in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 4 at Rogers Arena and concludes in Rosemont, Illinois, at Allstate Arena on Aug. 22.

It will hit Seattle; Oakland, California; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Denver; Austin, Texas; Houston; Fort Worth, Texas; Tampa, Florida; Sunrise, Florida; Atlanta; Baltimore; Hampton, Virginia; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Newark, New Jersey; Boston; Brooklyn, New York; Detroit; Montreal and Toronto.

The tour is produced by Young’s Monami Entertainment and Live Nation. Presale begins tomorrow , and tickets will become available to the general public on Friday.

Rory McIlroy quit PGA Tour players' text chain after Jordan Spieth's LIV Golf remarks

R ory McIlroy "removed himself" from a PGA Tour players' group chat following comments made by Jordan Spieth about the proposed merger with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. Spieth replaced McIlroy on the PGA Tour Policy Board in November when the Northern Irishman quit due to frustrations with tour leadership and a desire to spend more time with his family and work on his game.

Spieth also played a role in preventing McIlroy from rejoining the policy board, reports the Mirror .

The policy board has been at the forefront of the tour's negotiations with PIF, which funds the breakaway LIV Golf. PIF and the PGA Tour agreed to a framework for a merger 11 months ago that would reunify professional golf , but there has been little progress since.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's 'falling out' over LIV Golf as PGA Tour duo's bond sours

Rory McIlroy urged to rejoin PGA Tour Policy Board as Patrick Cantlay 'ruining' golf

McIlroy was keen to return to the top table after a request from 2012 US Open champion Webb Simpson, who wanted to resign his role as a player director if he could select McIlroy as his replacement. However, the Ulsterman confirmed on Wednesday that he will not be rejoining the policy board.

"I think it got pretty complicated and pretty messy, and I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before," McIlroy said. "There was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason."

McIlroy didn't point fingers, but it's believed that Spieth, Patrick Cantlay and even Tiger Woods, despite their longstanding friendship, weren't too thrilled about the world number two's potential return to the board.

The tension between Cantlay and McIlroy is no secret, with a notorious Ryder Cup clash and McIlroy's candid remarks to the Irish Independent where he described their relationship as "average at best" and noted, "[We] don't have a ton in common and see the world quite differently."

Meanwhile, the once tight-knit relationship between Woods and McIlroy has reportedly become tense amidst the PGA Tour- LIV Golf dispute, leading to what some might call a "falling out of sorts" McIlroy and Spieth have also had their fair share of friction. They were paired with Viktor Hovland during the Players Championship's opening round in March, which saw heated debates over two penalty drops McIlroy took after his tee shots ended up in the water.

Adding to the strain, McIlroy was not impressed by Spieth's remarks a month earlier when the American suggested that the PGA Tour didn't "need" to partner with the PIF following an agreement with Strategic Sports Group, half of which has already been distributed to PGA Tour players as part of an equity scheme.

Rory McIlroy admits he was taught 'great lesson' after ending PGA Tour title drought

Rory McIlroy locked out of LIV Golf talks as he makes 'Good Friday Agreement' plea

Spieth remarked: "I think the positive [of a deal with PIF] would be a unification [of PGA Tour and LIV players], but I just think it's something that is almost not even worth talking about right this second," acknowledging his new role on the board after taking over from Rory McIlroy late last year. "The idea is that we have a strategic partner that allows the PGA Tour to go forward the way that it's operating right now without anything else."

McIlroy, however, found Spieth's comments counterproductive to discussions about a potential agreement that could lead to PGA Tour and LIV Golf stars competing together more frequently. So much so, that he considered leaving a text group of PGA Tour players, as reported by Golf Digest.

The two reportedly had an hour-long conversation later to clear the air.

Regarding Spieth's remarks at the time, McIlroy expressed his concern: "My thing was if I'm the original [potential] investor that thought that they were going to get this deal done back in July, and I'm hearing a board member say that we don't really need them now, how are they going to think about that, what are they going to feel about that? ".

"They are still sitting out there with hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, that they're going to pour it into sport. And I know what Jordan was saying. But if I were PIF and I was hearing that coming from here, the day after doing this SSG deal, it wouldn't have made me too happy, I guess?"

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Minitex and the University of Minnesota Libraries are partnering to participate in Doors Open Minneapolis on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19. From 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day, we'll invite the public into the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC) and the Maxine Houghton Wallin Special Collections Research Center.

A view down an aisle in MLAC.

The Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC) is a cavernous engineering marvel situated 82 feet beneath Elmer L. Andersen Library, on the West Bank Campus of the University of Minnesota. It is operated by Minitex and functions as a high-density storage facility for Minnesota libraries. MLAC's subterranean 17-foot-tall shelves store more than 1.5 million volumes. Visitors who join us for Doors Open Minneapolis will have the opportunity to descend into the cavern (very safely, in an elevator) and also to visit the above-ground Maxine Houghton Wallin Special Collections Research Center , along with an exhibit space on the main level of Andersen Library.

Also of interest, Hennepin County Library's Minneapolis Central Library is also participating in Doors Open Minneapolis this year. Minneapolis Central Library was designed by world-renowned architect César Pelli. During Doors Open, visitors will be offered self-guided tours of the building, including historical displays on past central libraries in the Special Collections department. On Sunday, the Library will not be open until 12:00 pm.

Taylor Swift debuts ‘Tortured Poets’ songs live as Eras Tour resumes

Swift made some significant changes to the 3-hour-and-15-minute set when she kicked off the European leg of her record-shattering tour Thursday after a two-month break.

the m m's tour

Taylor Swift’s record-shattering Eras Tour has essentially been a well-oiled, steady machine since it launched in March 2023 — she switched up a few songs on occasion, but mostly stuck to the same set list during the 3-hour-and-15-minute spectacle. And Swift’s loyal fan base has spent hours studying footage from around the world, with millions tuning in on fan-hosted live-streams to memorize every detail.

But on Thursday, Swift made some significant changes to the show for the first time as the tour kicked off its European leg at Paris La Défense Arena in Nanterre, France, for the first of four sold-out concerts. As many predicted, she debuted live performances of her songs from her 11th studio record, “The Tortured Poets Department,” a double album that contains 31 tracks and sold the equivalent of 2.61 million albums in its first week (combining physical sales and streams) when it dropped in mid-April .

“You are so present and it means the world to us as performers when you show up to a concert and when you act this way. … It makes us want to show you all kinds of fun surprises,” Swift, 34, told the extremely enthusiastic audience early in the night, calling the Eras Tour “the best experience of my life, honestly.”

The concert was live-streamed by fans on TikTok. One viewed by The Post featured a news ticker running at the bottom of the video with updates about the show: new outfits, new video screen visuals, a new order for some of the songs. Swift, who divides her set list into “eras” from her 18-year career, kicked off the “Tortured Poets” era about two hours into the concert with “But Daddy I Love Him” — a track that many interpret to be a message to her fan base about their, ah, extreme interest in her love life and the men she dates.

The Style section

“I’ll tell you something about my good name, it’s mine alone to disgrace,” Swift sang, running back and forth across the stage throughout. “… God save the most judgmental creeps who say they want what’s best for me, sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I’ll never see.” At the end, she sat down with her dancers and added a verse from “So High School” with lines that include “You know how to ball; I know Aristotle” — thought to be a reference to her boyfriend , the very famous football player Travis Kelce. (Swift did not sit for any interviews about the album and has provided very little detail for the ideas behind the lyrics.)

Even if they were being scolded, the fans loved it. The ecstatic screaming and cheering continued in the audience as Swift continued through “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” which appears to detail the downsides of fame, along with breakup anthems “Down Bad” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” along with her new single with Post Malone, “Fortnight.” Swift added all kinds of new dance routines and set pieces, including one that made it look as if she were levitating across the stage.

And she performed a brief play before “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” an upbeat track about how she was able to perform on the Eras Tour even through heartbreak. Two magicians dragged her lifeless body to another part of the stage where they “forced” her to change into another sparkly outfit as she rolled her eyes and reluctantly got ready to dance.

“So you were the first crowd ever to see ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ chapter of the Eras Tour!” Swift said cheerfully during the next set where she played a couple of surprise acoustic songs. “Or as I like to call it, ‘Female Rage: The Musical.’”

Otherwise, many chapters of the show stayed the same. Though some wondered whether Swift would simply extend the concert to four hours, she cut six songs overall and condensed the “Folklore” and “Evermore” eras into one, explaining that she considers them “sister albums” because she recorded them during the same year early in the pandemic.

“I’ve always thought ‘Folklore’ to me represents spring and summer and ‘Evermore’ represents fall and winter. So on the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters and combined them into one chapter,” she said. She wrapped up the concert with “Karma” a little after 11 p.m. Paris time after running through 45 songs, and thanked her dancers and band for learning all the new material.

The European leg of the Eras Tour will run through mid-August, and the tour will resume in the United States and Canada in the fall.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

NF kicks off 'last tour I'm ever gonna do' in Milwaukee — if true, he's going out on top

the m m's tour

An hour into his set at Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum Wednesday, rapper and singer NF took a moment to thank the fans for helping him realize one of his dreams, to play arenas.

Then, right after that, the artist born Nathan Feuerstein appeared to drop a bomb in what was the first show of the latest leg of his "Hope" tour.

"This is the last tour I'm ever gonna do."

Wait, was he serious?

A surprised hush, sprinkled with some boos, filled the arena. NF didn't offer any further explanation. He changed the subject by talking about a fan's broken-chair shirt — an inside joke among longtime followers, which prompted arena-wide cheers and prompted NF to make fun of many fans who cheered for something they didn't understand.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"I'm done rapping, show's over, thanks for coming out, I appreciate you," NF said in response.

There was a little bitterness in his tone, but he wasn't serious that time. The 90-minute, 19-song set resumed with "Pandemonium."

Fans are going to hope he's not serious about ending his touring career, either.

There's a history of artists making "I'm done touring" statements on stage, and the sentiment doesn't always stick. But that NF even suggested quitting Wednesday, right after thanking fans for elevating him to arena-headliner status, is just the latest apparent contradiction of a surprising, one-of-a-kind star.

More: From Jelly Roll to Noah Kahan, 15 top concerts to see in Milwaukee this summer

More: These are all of the arena, amphitheater and stadium concerts in Milwaukee in 2024

Yes, NF is a star. Fiserv Forum was full Wednesday, and his last three albums, dating back to 2017, have either debuted in the No. 1 or 2 spot on the Billboard 200.

But he's hardly a household name, and probably wouldn't be recognized by most people on the street. His face Wednesday was often concealed by a baseball cap and shadowy lighting, in line with his promotional photos. (Possibly related to his preference for concealment, press photos and house photos were also prohibited Wednesday.)

He's clearly and directly influenced by his fellow Michigan native Eminem, with his head-spinning ability to stuff run-on verses into a rapid-fire flow, like on setlist highlight "Paid My Dues" Wednesday. He also embraces splashy pop production, like on "Time," a song about his failings written for his frustrated wife; the song's arrangement sounds like "Play"-era Moby.

But NF's also very much doing his own thing, avoiding the expletives and shock tactics of his muse.

And that's because NF is a Christian rapper — even though he objected to that classification in an interview last year with The Guardian. Nevertheless, he raps about his faith, initially was signed to a Christian label, and has a strong following among Christian music fans.

And yet, he's unlike most Christian artists, who are inclined to emphasize faith and hope in their music. NF frequently gets dark and deeply personal, far more than nearly all of his peers — rapping Wednesday about a breakdown on "The Search," or turning to God to help him find mental serenity on "My Stress."

Critically, his songs don't offer a happy ending.

He kicked off his show Wednesday with a song called "Hope," the title track of his latest album. But it was NF's pain that was most prevalent, the song building Wednesday to a powerful and profound unleashing of a lifetime of anguish, as he rapped about 30 years of running, searching, hurting, anger, shame, sorrow and more. By the end of the song, he suggested he'll "take the reins," be the supportive father to his son that he didn't get from his own father — but even then, he still expresses doubt that he can truly succeed.

That's the vulnerability, the sadness, the realness that has made NF so popular. People struggling through life see themselves in the man who often, literally, is trying not to be seen.

Sure, his rapping skills are a draw (even though some hip-hop purists might have scoffed that he rapped over backing vocal tracks Wednesday). Some live drumming Wednesday added some oomph, and there were the usual bells and whistles — flashy video, smoke machines, lasers.

And while NF's facial expressions were often hard to discern, he was a physically engaging performer, and a charismatic one — at one point, killing the music to "Careful" to demand a stronger crowd response, even though fans in the pit were already jumping and cheering passionately. (Of course, the trick worked.)

But it was the meaning behind the music that mattered most Wednesday.

For "Hope" single "Happy," a song that has NF relaxing his rapping for more singing — the directness and subtle sorrow of his voice compensating for vocal finesse — he opens up a dialogue with God, confessing that he's more comfortable "living in my agony," recognizing that he has "baggage that I ain't opened yet … some traumas that I can't forget." He doesn't even know what true happiness will be like — and by the end of the song, he still hasn't attained it.

There were even darker songs, like "Hate Myself" from his 2019 album "The Search." Again, NF's reaching out to God, unable to help himself, to love himself. "Got lost in the questions that I can't answer, can't stand who I am, but it don't matter," he rapped Wednesday, the burden pushing him to sit on the edge of a riser for his confessionals. And again, there's no immediate salvation — instead, NF remains "knee-deep in defeat of my own actions."

And he stayed seated for the subsequent song Wednesday, "Mama," also from "Hope," about his mother, who died from an opioid overdose. Pondering what life might be like for her in heaven, he asks her if she felt "like trash" on Earth, like "something disposable that nobody could love" — like he does now.

"I pray you see me down here looking up," NF rapped tenderly Wednesday, as home movies depicting his mother and him as a child played on a screen behind him. "Still got a lot of things that I need healing from/But I'll get there eventually, don't you worry none/I just hope you finally got some peace and you feel happy Mom."

The pain doesn't go away. The struggle remains real. But in that song there was also some relief, a rare victory for NF, and it was very moving.

"I can't hold this unforgiveness in my heart no more," NF said. "Just know that you are lovable to me."

Seven songs later, NF ended the show with "Running," a setlist switch-up from other shows, which might be concerning for fans. The song's last lyrics, flashed on the screen: "I'm done" — possibly reinforcing NF's intent to quit touring.

But if he really does quit, Wednesday's tour kickoff showed he'll be going out in his prime. And he'll also be doing what he has always done — making a move on his terms.

3 takeaways from NF's tour kickoff in Milwaukee

  • Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” was the song filling the arena after the show ended and people headed to the exits. Was that NF’s way of picking Lamar’s side in his massive rap battle with Drake?
  • There was a funny moment when I saw a couple standing toward the back of the arena floor who had no idea when NF emerged just behind them on a B-stage. So while dozens of people started rushing past them, the couple kept looking forward, vibing to “Let You Down,” somehow oblivious to the commotion — until maybe a minute into the song, when they finally turned around and looked shocked.
  • Shout-out to a Fiserv Forum employee named Debra who gave big high fives with a smile to nearly everyone that came down one of the escalators after the show. “She’s so hyped,” an appreciative kid riding the escalator behind me commented. But alas, our escalator was out of Debra’s reach. “We should have gone down that way,” the kid said gesturing to the other escalator, a touch jealous.
