Leaving the gorgeous Coromandel behind we’ll venture into the enchanting Karangahake Gorge nestled among the Kaimai Ranges, for a hike amongst the walkways and old mining tunnels. Next, we’ll be heading over to Waitomo (‘wai’ meaning water, ‘tomo’ meaning hole) to visit the magical glow-worm caves. World-famous for their abundance of glow worms, extensive underground river system and stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations, a trip to the caves is a trip to another world. However, Waitomo is more than caves and glowworms; it's a cultural hub rich in Māori history, myths and legends. Some of the cave guides are descendants of Chief Tāne Tinorau, the original explorer of the caves. Upon our arrival, we'll stop for a refreshing walk through the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve where you can see the Ruakuri Natural Tunnel, native forest and small caves. For those feeling adventurous, this afternoon you will have the opportunity to experience a Black Water Rafting trip (optional extra). Brave the underground rapids as you raft in tubes, leap off waterfalls, and float beneath a dazzling sky of glow worms.

Great Piha and Tiki tour trip with Mike!

We had a great day on the Piha beach/Tiki tour with Mike. He took us to see some great spots on the west coast and was very knowledgable on the area and New Zealand in general. He catered to everyone’s needs and genuinely took an interest is making everyone’s day/time in NZ as good as possible. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking to take a day trip to the west coast!

tiki tour auckland

Joined the day tour with Trippy and it was a great way to see the key points on the West Coast - Karekare Falls, 1-hr hike along Waitakere Range and 3 hours on Piha Beach. Mike was very knowledgeable and happy to share on all topics. Pick up was at 11:30 in the city. (Tip - location is outside Base Backpackers but Mike stops on Queen’s St so keep an eye on the corner). We made a quick stop at the Falls, then did a 1 hr hike (Tip - Bring water and good shoes. Hike was moderate difficulty). Then 3 hours at Piha Beach. (Tip - 3 hours is more than enough time. Plenty of time to hike up the lookout. Enjoy lunch before or a coffee after at the cafe in town.). It was a bit cold (Tip - bring warm clothes) so not really beach friendly. But got some amazing pictures. Really enjoyed my day.

tiki tour auckland

I had a lovely day with "trippy" in Piha. The guide Mike runs his small business with passion and really takes care of his guests. The trip is a good mixture of a guided day and free time which I loved to spend at the beach. Great place, great day, great guide! Do it!!

I booked the trip online, my payment went through. But I received an email stating bookings was on hold until payment was confirmed. I called to discuss, but went to voicemail. I then received a text saying to text instead. So I did. And sorted it out via text easily. Booking confirmed. I turned up early, and so did Mike. We left on time with a full bus. The trip towards the Waitakere Ranges was interesting as Mike has vast knowledge of the area. Being English and wanting to know about this wonderful country, I found his knowledge very enlightening and thorough. He gave some warning about the Kauri dieback and what we needed to do to prevent its spread. He knew the area well, communicated well. He was passionate and very friendly. He was very inclusive with his banter, involving all the group. The walk was well informed with ample opportunity to take pictures. He pointed out some interesting walks down by Piha beach and then gave us a few hours to explore by ourselves Thoroughly enjoyed the trip, very informative. Will definitely be booking again with him, he deserves it! Well done and thank you Mike! Lee

I had booked a relatively last minute return trip from Piha to Auckland, and Michael was on top of contacting me to confirm the booking and time to be picked up. He was also willing to pick me up from my accommodation instead of the Piha Store saving me a brief but humid walk! Would very much recommend this service to anyone who plans to visit Piha (and would recommend visiting Piha), it's easily the most cost-effective method and you can make some friends along the way.

An awesome half-day guided tour for a great price! Two walks to several stunning natural places like Karekare waterfall and awe-inspiring vistas over Tasman Sea. There is no rush at all, so if you want to enjoy any of the places for a little longer your guide will let you take your time. The last stop before heading back to Auckland CBD is Piha Beach with its black volcanic sand and Lion Rock where you have several hours to spend on your own.

We had an amazing day out on the water, exploring the coast and Islands of the national park. Well worth the trip, our guide Micah was amazing with lots of information about the area. We did so well went also include Spilt Apple Rock. A very weary but happpy group got back to Marahau

Loved every minute of this trip! These guys are super organized and friendly. Everything was sorted and the guides were awesome and very experienced. Time went by so fast. Wish I had done the 5- day tour!

Sea kayaking for the first time, I opted for a short introductory half day. It was beautiful, fun and rewarding. The guides were excellent, group "sailing" was an unexpected fun activity that saved energy and lunch on the beach after was tasty, filling and relaxing. Water taxi back including being towed (while still in the boat) by a tractor.

We did a trip for 5 days walking to Awaroa lodge for a day and than guided 3 day kayak trip back to Maharau This trip will be always remembered as we made many memories The team at ABT did a great job with customizing the trip and we had a great guide in Whitey Throughly recommend this experience

BATS Theatre, The Heyday Dome, 1 Kent Tce , Wellington

14/06/2016 - 18/06/2016

Kia Mau Festival 2016

Having made its debut at the International Comedy Festival in 2015, Tiki Tour is a one-woman sketch comedy show written and performed by Kura Forrester.

Tiki Tour focuses on main character Bronson Atarangi from Mount Roskill, Auckland. Bronson is the narrator of the show and is sharing his story about his recent travels abroad.

Kura plays every character on the Tiki Tour bus that Bronson is on. The characters are; Brittany Bryhanna Sinclair the tour guide from Australia, Lena Afiasi the young Samoan woman from South Auckland, Carl Jr the loveable loser from Alabama, Takiwai Atarangi who is Bronson’s son, and Zsuzanna from Hungary.

Tiki Tour is a celebration of humans in all their glory, awkward overseas behaviour, kiwis abroad, young people, classic travel stories and of course there is a touch of romance in there too. Kiwis will recognise themselves and their friends and travellers will identify with the characters on the bus.

Tiki Tour debuted in Auckland at the International Comedy Festival in 2015 and went on to a season at the Basement Theatre.

Timeless yet timely character comedy

Review by John Smythe 15th Jun 2016

Kura Forrester’s comic alter-ego, Bronson Atarangi from Auckland’s Mount Roskill, is as genial and generous a bus-buddy as you could hope to find on a London to Amsterdam ‘Tiki Tour’. He’s good in a crisis too.

Bronson’s positive but self-effacing nature becomes apparent in his gratitude that we have chosen to come to his korero at BATS’ Heyday Dome, not to mention the three best things he has discovered in Te Whanganui a Tara, aka Pōneke or Wellington, on this his first ever visit.

But it’s ‘Overseas’ he is here to tell us about, with the welcome assistance of operator Scotty Cotter who adds the odd burst of music and even some flash lighting effects to help evoke place and mood.

Not that Forrester and her director Jessica Joy Wood ask us to imagine we are on the actual bus, or wherever. As five of Bronson’s fellow travellers are personified and events unfold, we are always in the theatre and, in true stand-up style, Forrester often comments from a performer’s perspective.

The simple but effective device of the tour guide and bus passengers introducing themselves on the bus’s mic establishes their characters and reveals that Bronson’s companions are less than half his age (46).

Brittany Bryhanna Sinclair (21), the tour guide, hails from Australia but has acquired some tell-tale touches of London accent. It is she who sets up the ‘fun game’ of each passenger telling three really interesting things about themselves.

Carl Jr from Tuscaloosa Alabama is escaping his Trump-loving, “fag-hating” Daddy, who gave him – guess what – for his 21 st birthday. This will be a self-discovering trip for Carl Jr.

Lena Afiasi, the Jesus-loving Samoan woman from Cannons Creek, Porirua, is also destined for a life-changing encounter.

Zsuzanna from Hungary is all smiles to compensate for her total lack of English language – which makes for an almost surreal series of encounters with her. What we discover about Zsuzanna at the end proves an object-lesson in not making assumptions about people just because they don’t speak your language.

It turns out Bronson has brought along his 19 year-old son, Takiwai, who is even more of an innocent abroad than his dad and destined for [spoiler averted].

Bronson’s wide-eyed observations concerning a ‘bakery’ in Paris are juxtaposed with Carl Jr’s attempt to explain the fizzy drink culture of Tuscaloosa. A discotheque in Barcelona sees Lena bust out some dance moves that are not to be confused with anything other than her cultural norm. And advice from a well-meaning Brittany reveals entrenched attitudes we are left to deal with.

In Budapest it’s Zsuzanna who treats the travelling companions to the wonders of a ‘Sparty’ – immersive partying an a vast hot water spa – and this is where things come to a head, culminating in the aforementioned crisis that Bronson sorts out in kapai Kiwi style.

As they say their goodbyes, the life-changing outcomes emerge and Bronson gets to deliver a delicious waiata. On reflection what has seemed like light-hearted character comedy turns out to have had some timeless yet timely things to say about humans being at large.
