19 Best Tours in Rome

By Maresa Manara and Erica Firpo

Rome Tour Vespa tour Scooterama

Vacation tours can be a divisive topic, particularly for people who feel passionately about exploring a city independently. But the truth of the matter is that exploring it with a local by your side will bring you to parts of it you might never find on your own. And no locals have as many stories to tell their city as the Romans. You'll find the most intellectual and personable tour guides to take you around vineyards, through olive groves, on vespa rides, through film studios, food markets, cemeteries, medieval churches, and the most iconic ancient sites. Without further delay, these are our picks for the very best Rome tours.

Rome Tour Ostia Antica ruins

City Wonders: Ostia Antica Half-Day Tour from Rome Arrow

Ostia Antica is a historic seaside village an hour from Rome and these half-day tours of the coastal archaeological site are well-planned. Groups visit Ostia’s amphitheater, temples, historic baths, and ancient market. Guides seem to have real passion for the subject, talking visitors through the entire tour, peppering their commentary with anecdotes and fun facts. This is a slam-dunk for true history buffs who want to get deeper into the greater Rome area.

Elizabeth Lev Rome Tour Santa Cecilia church

Elizabeth Lev: Rome's Historical Center, An All-You-Can-See Smorgasbord of Art Arrow

Elizabeth Lev is something else. Rome is her city, and this tour is her work of art. She has an incredible way of engaging with the history, the art, the monuments, and the stories. You'll find yourself wanting to spend all your time with her. The tour explores the ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art periods; and it visits sites like 13th century frescos above the church of Santa Cecilia and art collections behind the facades of the Spada palace. You'll be wowed by all of the layers of the city and how it feels like Rome has been hitting a string of never-ending home runs since antiquity.

Default

Elizabeth Lev: Borrowed but Never Baroque, Bernini & 17th Century Rome Arrow

This tour of Elizabeth Lev's meets up outside the beautiful Piazza della Repubblica . Our group was tiny, but Liz will accommodate larger private groups. She is both an incredible academic brain and a witty storyteller. And her tour shows of the dramatic  range of Baroque art and architecture within Rome. This tour is great for anyone who wants a deep dive into the city's Baroque history, and anyone who wants to appreciate Rome in an experience that's not quite in the guide books.

LivItaly Tours: Vespa Sidecar Tour Arrow

The Vespa Sidecar tour is entirely private and can be customized for return visitors who may have already seen the highlights. It is not, though, a show-up-when-you-want activity. It can be organized for up to six participants, but you'll only be in a group if you choose to be. My tour was perfect because it was just me and the driver/guide Luca.  As a licensed guide, he knows his history, is easy to understand, and is very friendly. He always has a plan, but is quick to change it at the first request. We talked Rome and food and went to all the right places, from big names to more under the radar finds.

Rome Tour Chaffeured Fiat 500 tour Rome 500 Exp

Rome 500 Experience: The 7 Hidden Gems of Rome Tour in an Antique FIAT 500 Arrow

There's a lot of reasons to sign up for this tour through greater Rome, not least is that you get to drive yourself with the top down in a vintage Fiat 500. Another nice perk: Rome's traffic is seriously easier to deal with when traveling in convoy (the group can have up to 50 cars in it). And, as you will get your own car to drive, it can feel like a private tour, although groups are also organized by language, so communication shouldn't be a problem for anyone.  But most importantly, you just look so much better behind the wheel of a classic Italian car.

Appian Way bicycle tour Top Bikes Rome

Top Bike Rental & Tours: Ancient Appian Way, Catacombs, and Aqueducts Park Tour Arrow

This tour will take the better part of your day (it's six hours start to finish). But going by bike to these outer city sites —the old Appian Way via the ancient aqueduct—is the easiest and most entertaining way to see them. Plus you won't want to cut out early: it ends with wine and some nibbles in Caffarella Park, which is so expansive it feels like you're in the countryside even though it's smack in the middle of the greater city. Bikes feel brand new and the confidence of the tour guides will put any nervous riders at ease.

Tram Tour Rome

Rome Tram Tracks Tour Arrow

This tour is a rocking dance  party on a vintage tram that rumbles through Rome. It lasts two hours, during which you'll cut up the dance floor, drink, and cheer as you roll past some of Rome's most iconic sites . This is really an evening activity for those who don't just want to go get dinner somewhere in town. The greatest part, however, may have been how the senior citizens on our ride managed to upstage all the thirty- and forty-year olds on the dance floor.

Casa Mia Tours: Rome Cinema & Food Arrow

Rome has a rich history of cinema, and while you could take any tour with any guide, there is nothing quite like seeing its cinematic history with Eleonora Baldwin, Cinecittà Studios veteran and granddaughter of famed director Vittorio de Sica, four-time Academy Award winner and father of Italian cinema. This tour is both Rome's history and Eleonora's story, and she is so passionate that it will make you want to spend all day with her, and all night watching films. There are only three requirements—a pair of comfy shoes, an empty stomach, and a reservation.

Rome Tour NonCatholic Cemetery tour

Non-Catholic Cemetery Tour Arrow

You should always visit the truly Roman neighborhood of Testaccio when in Rome, but this tour of its historic non-Catholic Cemetery gives you reason to stay in the area after you've hit its prime trattorias. It's a beautiful, unusually tranquil space, filled with bougainvillea and museum-worthy sculptures in the middle of the city. The informative guides will school you on the cemetery's 400-year history as you amble past the tombstones of Keats, Percy Shelly, and other famous expats.

Fall and Rise of Rome Tour Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo

Context Travel: Fall and Rise of Rome Arrow

This historical tour starts at a medieval church in San Clemente and ends at the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Its chronology spans from the Roman Empire's fall to the Renaissance's beginnings. The guide Philip was total pro. He's an archaeologist with a great sense of humor and passion for every site. He knew exactly what to show me and could even point out where to stand so I had the best understanding of the sights. People who enjoy Roman, religious, and art histories will  love this tour. It's also a great opportunity for people who have already seen the main tourist attractions to see some gems off the beaten path.

Rome Tour Cocktail Bars in Rome evening walking tour The Roman Guy

The Roman Guy: Cocktail Bars in Rome, Evening Walking Tour Arrow

This English-speaking tour will take you to some of Rome's most popular bars, including Trastevere's Freni e Frizioni , with stop offs to major attractions along the way. Plus, company founders Sean and Brandon are always quick to offer tips on the best spots for gelato or pizza in the city as you pass by for that next negroni. It’s actually a fantastic way to experience life in Rome with locals—far more relaxing that spending time trying to avoid tourist traps.

Cantina Ribela Rome Tours

Katie Parla: Vineyard Visit to Cantina Ribelà Arrow

Sommelier Maurizio di Franco meets you at your hotel and accompanies you via hired car to Cantina Ribelà while enchanting you with a bit of Lazio history and winemaking background on Ribelà. Maurizio is a certificated sommelier, and it doesn't hurt that he's also super charming. His love of wine is contagious, he tells great stories, and his patience is wonderful. At the winery you'll be struck be the natural beauty of the landscape, close as it is to a city as big as Rome.

Rome Tour Virtual Reality tour of Emperor Nero's Palace and Colosseum Livitaly Tours

LivItaly Tours: Virtual Reality Tour of the Colosseum and Domus Aurea Arrow

Imagine if you could physically see the sites, monuments, and reference points that tour guides bring up when ushering you around a city as ancient as Rome. This virtual reality tour lets you, by creating enhanced versions of the way the Eternal City appeared during the days of the empire, all visible through the glasses you'll wear as you make your way through the Roman Forum and Colosseum .

Vatican Museums Sistine Chapel Rome Tours

Vatican Museums: “Out of Hours” Guided Tour, Good Morning Vatican Museums Arrow

There is nothing like opening the doors to an empty Sistine Chapel . The exclusive private Out of Hours Good Morning Vatican tour must be booked months in advance and is subject to permission of the Vatican. You will be greeted by Vatican personnel and escorted through the complex by the Clavigero, holder of the 300 keys of the Vatican Museums. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it does begin quite early in the morning. At 6 a.m. you and no more than 19 others will accompany the Clavigero to open the doors of the Vatican Museums.

Johnny Madge: Olive Oil Tours Arrow

You'll have to trek well outside the city (close to an hour) to reach the olive groves in the Sabina country, but it's well worth the trip. Johnny Madge is an olive oil authority , judging competitions all over the world and this is his backyard. He clearly loves it, and that love is contagious. Tourees will learn to distinguish extra virgin olive oil from everything else and importantly that you do not drizzle oil on your food. You pour it. This  is best for foodies who want to get out of the city and deep dive in Roman food.

Trajan's Column at Piazza Venezia Domus Romane Rome Tour

Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini: Multimedia Tour Arrow

The Domus Romane are ancient Roman villas and other structures, abandoned in antiquity, filled in with debris, and inadvertently used as foundations for Palazzo Valentini, a Renaissance palace turned government office building. They are now underground, obscured by buildings and pavement just beside Piazza Venezia. On this tour, in situ multimedia renderings recreate an Imperial Rome domus, as well as some aspects of Roman life. The guides are actual archaeologists, and the fact-checked audio is delivered cleanly. These language-specific multimedia tours are popular though, and must be booked in advance.

The Rome Food Walking Tour

Tavole Romane Food Tours: The Rome Food Walking Tour Arrow

Think of Tavole Romane, the food-and-wine-focused walking tour of Rome, as getting access to the little black book of those who know the city's food scene best. Owners Gabriele and Silvia customize the tours based on the interests of each intimate group, which could mean wine bars in Trastevere or an aperitivo-heavy hop through the centro storico, led by somms, chefs, or another tapped in member of Rome's food scene.

Latteria Studio: Market to Table Arrow

This market tour and cooking class began with a wonderful walk through the market to Latteria Studios, a functional cooking studio and photo set. Alice, Rachel, and Carla, who head up the activities, are real professionals. They know everyone at the market, and they know all about food. Sitting at the table at the end of day fosters a real sense of community with what may have been a group of strangers from different countries and continents. You'll immerse yourself in Rome and make new friends at the same time.

Cinecittà Studios Rome Tours

Cinecittà Studios: VIP Tour Arrow

This is your chance to see the studio that was once home to Fellini and Leone. It's still a working studio though, so you'll need to follow the guide's itinerary to the letter. She will know about Cinecittà though: its history, and its film productions, and its famous alumni. Also, Cinecittà owns every set that was built on the lot. Master artisans created them all—ancient Rome, a 1940s submarine, and fantastical, imagined worlds. They perfectly accurate to their settings, as well as pristinely preserved.

  • Qiaoning G 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles We love this small group tour! Booked this tour for my family during our travel to Rome in March 2024. There were a total of 9 people in our group, which was a very nice size for everyone to stay close the entire time, despite the crowds. Our tour with Michele was absolutely wonderful! He is super knowledgeable, well organized, humorous and friendly. The tour was nicely paced, and we were delightedly fed with stories of the arts and history. Definitely worth every penny of the tour! Highly recommend! 15 Best Tours in Rome

Rome is a very popular tourist destination thanks to its historical, cultural and culinary delights. The capital of Italy is packed with attractions to entice any tourist – from Ancient Roman monuments to modern art galleries and experimental cuisines.

This popularity has, however, made the city incredibly touristy. One way to beat this is to organize a tour. These can often allow you to beat the enormous queues in Rome and often provide insight you will not get elsewhere.

Here are 15 of the best tours you can take whilst in Rome.

1. Rome: Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus Tour

Hop-on Hop-off Rome

Hop-on Hop-off sightseeing buses are popular with tourists in cities across the world – and Rome is no exception.

Rome is a huge city, so rather than getting sore feet from walking too much or forcing yourself to navigate the complicated public transport system, let this open-topped double-decker whisk you around the most popular sites – from the Colosseum to Piazza di Spagna, and even onwards to the Vatican City.

All of the main hits are covered on this, making it a great option for your first day.

2. Crypts & Catacombs Tour with Bone Chapel Visit

Crypts & Catacombs Tour

Go on an amazing underground tour and explore the catacombs and crypts beneath the streets of Rome.

You will learn a lot about the ‘hidden’ history of the city and their people.

View Prices & Reviews

3. Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Walking Tour

Colosseum And Ancient Rome Walking Tour

Rome – once the center of the Roman Empire – is full of fascinating archaeological sites that are thousands of years old.

Unfortunately, because these sites are so popular with tourists, it can often take a while to get in. This tour allows you to skip the line and get into the Colosseum at a pre-arranged time.

It does cost a little extra than regular entry tickets, but it is well worth it to give yourself more free time to explore the rest of Rome.

After the Colosseum, you are also offered a walking tour of Ancient Rome, where you can learn more about the history.

4. Rome: 4 Hour Food Tour by Night

Rome Food Tour By Night

No visit to Italy is complete without indulging in the food. Italians are very proud of their local produce and have a strict set of rules that define how and when you can eat and drink certain things.

This tour takes you on a nighttime walk around some of the most interesting foodie havens in the city, as well as the more established restaurants. You are given samples of food and wine, as well as some of the local produce as it is prepared by locals.

With over 20 tastings, you are also imparted with knowledge on how to spot the best cuisine and what the rules are around eating it.

5. Rome: Pasta and Tiramisu Workshop with Dinner

Pasta & Tiramisu Workshop

Would you rather learn how to make your own Italian feast to continue the experience when you get back home?

There are hundreds of great pasta making workshops across the country and this is one of the best. Not only do you learn how to make the pasta from scratch – mixing and cutting it into the freshest noodles you will ever taste – you are also shown how to create tiramisu.

Once finished you can choose your own pasta sauce – which the restaurant prepares for you – and enjoy your creations with a glass of wine specially selected to compliment the sauce you have chosen.

6. Rome: Pantheon Express Guided Tour

Pantheon, Rome

The Pantheon is one of the most well-preserved monuments from Ancient Rome and is free to the public.

If you would like to get a better idea of the history behind the building and its place in modern Rome, you can book this forty minute tour that will guide you around the grounds of the building as well as give you detailed information once you are inside.

You will also be shown the tombs of some of the most important Romans in history, all of whom are laid to rest in the Pantheon.

7. Rome: Borghese Gallery with Optional Guided Tour

The Borghese Gallery is located inside the Villa Borghese Pinciana. The building itself is a fantastic example of Renaissance architecture, designed by renowned architect Flaminio Ponzio.

The building now hosts some of Italy’s most valuable artworks, including works by Caravaggio, Bernini, and Canova.

This tour gives you skip-the-line entry into the gallery, as well as a special guided tour to help you understand the works more in depth. You will also be given entrance into a special Bernini exhibition.

8. 35-Minute Rome Pantheon Audio Guide Tour

Inside The Pantheon, Rome

If you would rather explore the Pantheon at your own pace but still want additional information about the building and what lies inside, this audio guide tour is a fantastic option.

It talks about the ancient history of the building as a pagan temple and its eventual transformation into a Catholic church.

There are 15 different listening points around the Pantheon where you will be instructed to play your audio guide. This allows you to pick and choose the most important parts for you, and spend longer in areas that you wish to give more attention to.

9. Rome: Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition

Leonardo Da Vinci Exhibition

Leonardo da Vinci is an incredible artist who is famous the world over. His works cover a variety of mediums, and this special exhibition aims to do justice to his multiple talents.

You get the opportunity not just to look at some of his pieces, but also to play with some of his inventions. The exhibition uses multimedia techniques to provide a real treat to the senses and help you gain an in-depth idea of the man himself.

This activity allows you to skip the line and also provides you with additional information about everything inside. There are options for fully guided tours.

10. Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill Package

Palatine Hill, Rome

The area around the Colosseum is home to other interesting Ancient Roman sites – including the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

These all charge entry fees and usually come with large queues from tourists leaving the Colosseum, so booking a tour can be an excellent way not only to beat these queues but also to gain further information on the unique monuments.

This is one of the best options if your main reason for visiting Rome is to learn about ancient history.

11. Rome: Half Day Vespa Tour With Private Driver

Vespa Tour Rome

There aren’t many things more romantic than winding through the streets of Italy on a Vespa.

This tour gives you your own private Vespa driver, as you ride through Rome and learn about the history, culture and, of course, cuisine. Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and drop you off.

You will sample some of Rome’s finest gelato, as well as have time for a small coffee break. Tours are fully licensed and a raincoat is included just in case the weather changes.

12. Rome: Food and Wine Half Day Tour

Food And Wine Tour Rome

This day tour is another great way to experience Roman cuisine at its finest, with a particular focus on foods that go well with wine and what wine you should drink with them.

It takes you through two of Rome’s biggest food destinations – Campo de’Fiori and Trastevere. The first part of the tour focuses on local street food, while the second part allows you to experience a true Italian restaurant complete with wine pairings.

This tour focuses on local Italian eateries – called trattorias – so you know you are eating the way real Romans do. No food tour is complete, of course, without some authentic Italian gelato.

13. Rome: Cooking Class in Mama’s Kitchen

Cooking Class In Mamma's Kitchen

The best food in Italy is not in the restaurants – it is in the homes of real Italians.

As with other countries across the world, Italian mums have become synonymous with good food; this class focuses on teaching you how to cook like a real Italian Mama.

You will be taken to an authentic market, shown how to best prepare ingredients using recipes passed down through generations of Italians, and finally get the opportunity to enjoy your own creations at a leisurely pace. A glass of wine is provided with your food.

14. Opera Serenades by Night in Rome

Opera Serenades By Night

Italy is also well known for its opera music; this experience gives you the opportunity to take in some of the best examples of the traditional music form. Verdi, Rossini, and Puccini are all included, as well as some other composers which vary from night to night. Before the concert, you will be given a private tour of Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.

Here, you will discover the private art collection contained within the palace and gain an insight into the life of the princess who lived here centuries ago.

15. Rome: Capuchin Crypt & Museum Tour with Choral Concert

Capuchin Crypt

Get a more macabre insight into Rome’s history with a visit to the Capuchin Crypt. These fascinating burial sites are decorated with bones from over 4000 monks, creating a dramatic and eerie vibe.

It is also a surprising place to learn about the early history of Christianity – which was once thought to be a cult.

Finish off the tour with a look at artworks by Caravaggio and Domenichino, and then listen to a stunning choral concert in the neighboring basilica.

Highlights of Italy

Amazing trip through the highlights of Italy, saw all the places I wanted to. Had lots of freedom and free time to do what we wanted to do, didn't have to spend every second with the group which what I liked about it. Tour leader was amazing, in each location would give us maps, highlight places, how to get to spots, recommend things when we were not sure. Just really good trip through Italy, saw heaps, ate heaps, and made new friends!

The Italian Dream Tour

The Italian Dream

The hotel in Rome was 3km further away from the central square. Equivalent does not just mean same number of stars, it also means similar distance from areas of interest. The hotel in Florence was very poor. It was dark, crowded and very poorly designed. There was too much time allocated to commercial push and being forced to buy chocolate etc.

Discover Italy end Milan Tour

Discover Italy end Milan

There were a lot of positives. The tour guides were excellent and they knew how much to say and how much free time to give folk to explore. I cannot fault the places we visited and the length of time in each. It was really good to allow a full day for groups to explore Rome on their own. We had a taster of the other places, enough to whet the appetite for future visits. Though I enjoyed the tour very much and would use TourRadar again, I do have two criticisms for future reference. Firstly, though the hotels were of a very good standard, they were too far away from city centres and in some there were very few opportunities to go out at night to eat away from the hotel. That is not good enough for those where eating expensively in the hotels was a real drain on the pocket. Secondly, bearing in mind it was the Winter season, it was not much fun exploring places in the dark and so some flexibility should have been included to prevent silly late arrivals at the hotels, often nearly 8pm. However, those concerns besides, it was a lovely holiday and thank you for all your careful planning and organisation. Please extend my gratitude to the wonderful guides!

Italian Holiday (7 Days) Tour

Italian Holiday (7 Days)

The ease of travel, opportunity to see different cities and a mind blowing amount of top tourist sites makes this guided tour a great option. There's one major miss on the trip...food and wine. When you think of Italy, you think of great pasta and wine, but the options included were lack luster. If the travel guide would provide details on the selected options it would have driven us to find alternative eats and drinks.

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days Tour

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

We booked a small group tour, advertised as 12 people in a minibus, we were actually 43 people on a standard large coach. We enjoyed the tour anyway, the coach was comfortable and radio transmitters and headsets made it possible to follow the commentary from the back of the group. Our guide Lucy, was very friendly and helpful and organised everything well, including wake up calls! There was however, some pressure to join optional activities, at extra cost. We went to Pisa and an excellent local guide made it an enjoyable experience. We were upgraded to be in Venice rather than Mestre, and the hotel there was especially lovely. The standard hotel in Florence was very pleasant but a bus ride away from the city centre. The set meals improved as the tour went on but only the final lunch in Montepulciano was above average. The included activities were mainly visits to cathedrals and basilicas with their incredible art. Some variety would have been good e.g. the Doge's palace in Venice. The 5 day tour didn't include any activities in Rome though we could have bought Vatican museum or sightseeing bus tickets by the same tour company, before we arrived. Overall it was a great way to see some of Italy's most picturesque towns / cities in a short time.

Italian Discovery Tour

Italian Discovery

We did the Italian Discovery Tour and generally felt the company did a great job.We did feel that there were way too many people. We were told there would be 35 and we ended up with a hundred This created alot of logistical problems and we wound up waiting for people frequently . We also asked before we left which optional trips were available and were told the Coliseum was one and we could sign up when we got to Rome but we're unable to do it . It was not offered The other optional trips were great. Our tour guides in general were great. Especially Nicole. The hotels also were wonderful. Our only complaint is that we did a Rome at night tour on our first night. The tour was great but we were left on Rome on our first night and were expected to find our own way back to the hotel Overall we would recommend the tour. The food at our hotels.except in Sorrento was terrible Breakfasts were good at some hotels but dinners were awful. We enjoyed the tour .

Rome City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights Tour

Rome City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights

((REVIEW IS FOR VENICE CITY BREAK, WHICH WAS NOT LISTED AS AN OPTION)) I (32 year old solo male traveler from NJ, USA, attorney by trade) had the distinct pleasure of dealing with Veronica from Italy on a Budget when I travelled to Italy this past July/August 2021. She was personable, knowledgeable, above-and-beyond helpful, responsive, and was absolutely instrumental in making my Italian vacation as great as it was. Before my trip, she helped as I had to reshuffle my plans due to my changing personal calendar as well as the effect of Covid on travel, and she patiently answered all of my questions over the phone and via chat in a straightforward manner. I also had various specific requests of how I wanted my trip to be personalized (adding certain activities to the itinerary, adding a day, upgrading my hostel stay), and she was able to complete every one. While in Italy, she kept in contact with me to ensure that I was happy with the trip, and she even provided helpful tips when I independently travelled to other parts of Italy outside of my Italy on a Budget itinerary. She deserves a 12/10. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Rome, Assisi & Magical Umbria - Premium Adventure

This is a new itinerary and was a fabulous experience. A great way to get to the smaller hill towns in Umbria as well as the well known sites. Food and accommodation were fantastic.

La Dolce Vita Experience Tour

La Dolce Vita Experience

Our trip to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Sorrento was great. The tour guides were very well organised and led three very good tours for us. Each tour was of a different theme and this made for an interesting few days. Our accommodation at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio was very comfortable, and the pool on a hot day was an added bonus. The staff were very nice and most helpful.

What people love about Rome Tours

Good value for the money, however there are few areas that could use improvement. Optional excursions were published too late, by the published dates we have already added extra nights and accommodation's so could not take advantage of them. With hotels about 30 mins outside of tourist area, some kind of shuttle should have been provided- not everyone can 'survive' sunrise to sunset on the go and taxi in IT are expensive and unreliable. The common areas of hotels were nice, however the rooms (mainly shower and carpets) could really really use a good scrub down. Having said that, Gabbi, our chaperon during the trip was great, super informative and helpful-- having a link for tips after the trip would help as at the end of the trip exhaustion kicks in and remembering tipping it is hard.
The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years
Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.

How to choose the ‘best’ Rome Colosseum tour for you (and what to keep in mind)

Visiting the Colosseum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many, and choosing the right tour can make all the difference.

Drawing on my own experience of visiting the Colosseum at various times of the day, here are some comprehensive tips to help you make an informed decision.

Types of Colosseum tours

Firstly, it’s important to know that there are different types of Colosseum tours to suit various interests and schedules:

  • Daytime General Tours : Ideal for first-time visitors who want a broad overview of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill and who want to see it all under the light of day. Drawbacks here include a more crowded experience, as it’s the most popular time to visit.
  • Colosseum Underground Tours : These offer a more in-depth look at the Colosseum, including its underground chambers. There will be less crowds, but this will usually command a higher price tag for the more exclusive experience. You can only visit the underground with a licensed guide.
  • Night Tours of the Colosseum : Experience the Colosseum in a different light, literally. These tours are less crowded and offer a unique atmosphere. I’ve done a night tour myself , and highly recommend this option for those who are visiting the Colosseum for the second time around, as well as those looking for a more unique experience, away from the crowds.

Booking in advance

Whether you’re interested in a general daytime tour, an underground exploration, or a magical night tour, booking in advance is crucial. The best reviewed tours often sell out, especially during peak tourist seasons, so you’ll want to book several weeks in advance.

Tour availability and timing

Always check the current tour schedules and available days to ensure they align with your visit to Rome. Keep an eye on your emails for any updates from the tour company, as schedules can change, particularly during peak seasons. Your tour may not actually end up departing at the time you originally booked it for.

Group combining

Be prepared for the possibility of smaller groups from different tours being combined, especially in the underground and night tours. This is often beyond the control of the tour companies, so it’s good to be flexible. The Colosseum hires its own archaeologists and it is they who will bring you through any of the limited access parts, like the underground.

Manage expectations

When reading reviews, you’ll find both praise and criticism for the vast majority of tours. It’s essential to manage your expectations and understand what each tour offers. You’ll be far less likely to be disappointed by your tour if you read the description and reviews thoroughly before you book your tour.

Additional monument visits

Some tours include visits to other historical sites in Rome. Consider whether you’d like to explore these additional sites to get a more rounded historical experience. It can be a good idea to combine several sites in one if you have the stamina for a tour lasting several hours.

Best Roman Colosseum Tours: FAQ

Is it worth getting a guided tour of the Colosseum?

Absolutely – I would say that a guide tour of the Colosseum is extremely worthwhile. A guided tour enhances your Colosseum experience by providing historical context, interesting anecdotes, and access to areas that are often off-limits to general ticket holders, such as the underground chambers or the arena floor.

Can you do the Colosseum without a tour guide?

Yes, you can visit the Colosseum without a tour guide. However, you’ll miss out on expert insights and may not have access to special areas like the underground or the arena floor. If you’re a history buff or first-time visitor, I’d highly recommended that you take a guided tour.

How much should I pay for a Colosseum tour?

Prices can vary widely depending on the type of tour and what’s included. Basic tours start around €30-€40 per person, while more comprehensive options like underground or night tours can go up to €100 or more. Always check what’s included in the price, such as skip-the-line access or additional monument visits.

What is the best way to see the Colosseum?

The best way to see the Colosseum depends on your interests. Daytime general tours are great for first-timers, underground tours offer a deeper dive into the Colosseum’s history, and night tours provide a unique, less crowded experience. If you’re a complete history nut like I am, why not visit several times and try out each way of visiting – I have, and have taken away something different each time!

What should I wear for a Colosseum tour?

Comfort is key. Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking a lot, and bring a hat and sunscreen for daytime tours. For night tours, I’d suggest a light to warm jacket as it can get chilly.

Is photography allowed during the Colosseum tour?

Yes, photography is generally allowed, but tripods and professional camera equipment might be restricted. Always check with your tour guide to be sure.

How early should I arrive for my Colosseum tour?

I’d recommend that you arrive around 15-30 minutes before your scheduled tour time. This allows for any last-minute changes and ensures you have time to meet up with your tour group. Sometimes, locating the tour group takes a few minutes once you get to the meet-up point.

Are Colosseum tours accessible for people with disabilities?

Based on the tours I came across when writing this post, it appears that most are not wheelchair-friendly, particularly those that include underground or arena floor access. If accessibility is a concern, it’s crucial to check with the tour provider in advance to determine what accommodations, if any, can be made.

What is the Best Colosseum Tour to Take?

Some of the best Colosseum tours in Rome visit at night

Personally, I’d say that the Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour is by far one of the top Colosseum tours you could take during your visit to Rome. With the underground access, you’ll gain unique insights into what life was like for gladiators and animals who once fought in the Colosseum.

Plus, with a maximum of six people per tour, it’s an intimate and personalized way to experience this iconic landmark at a very reasonable price.

However, if you’re interested in a tour that includes a unique virtual reality experience, then the Colosseum Arena Floor & Ancient Rome tour might be your top choice!

Ultimately, it’s best to consider what elements are most important to you – be it history, convenience, exclusivity, or interactivity – when selecting the best Colosseum tour for your visit.

Is It Worth Getting a Guided Tour of the Colosseum?

Yes, it is absolutely worth getting a guided tour of the Colosseum. While it is possible to explore the Colosseum independently, a guided tour offers a wealth of added value. Expert guides provide in-depth insights into the history and cultural significance of the site, bringing the ancient world to life with their knowledge and storytelling.

Tours often include access to areas of the Colosseum not open to general admission ticket holders, such as the Underground and the Arena Floor, further enhancing your experience.

Additionally, guided tours usually come with skip-the-line privileges, saving valuable time on your visit. Overall, a guided tour of the Colosseum is a worthwhile investment for a comprehensive and enriching experience.

What is the Best Website to Buy Colosseum Tickets?

top 10 rome tours

The best website to buy Colosseum tickets in our opinion is Viator . This platform is user-friendly, secure, and reliable, offering a variety of tours including exclusive experiences like the Underground and Arena Floor access, or unique opportunities like virtual reality tours.

I’ve used Viator countless times for worldwide tour bookings and have never had a problem, which is why it’s the only tour website I use now.

The website provides detailed descriptions of each tour, customer reviews, and the ability to compare prices and inclusions. Plus, your tickets are immediately confirmed upon booking, making the process smooth and hassle-free!

You’ll have the option of special add-ons including skip-the-line entry, special access to otherwise blocked-off areas, and more!

Is the Colosseum Underground Tour Worth It?

Absolutely, the Colosseum Underground Tour is worth it! This tour grants you access to the parts of the Colosseum that are usually off-limits to the general public… the underground chambers!

These chambers were once the backstage of the grand shows, where gladiators prepared for battle and exotic animals were kept. A guide’s narration of the remarkable engineering feats and the dramatic events that unfolded here adds an extra layer of intrigue to your visit making the underground tour an unrivalled and immersive experience that’s well worth doing.

What Day of the Week is Best to Visit the Colosseum?

Many of the best Colosseum tours last between 2-3 hours

The best day to visit the Colosseum is generally mid-week, specifically on a Wednesday or Thursday. These days tend to be less crowded compared to weekends or the beginning of the week, providing a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Furthermore, arriving early in the morning, right when the gates open, can help you avoid peak crowd times and allow you to experience the Colosseum in relative peace. Particularly if you’ll be visiting in the summer months

However, crowd levels can vary based on the time of year and other factors, so it’s always a good idea to plan for a bit of a crowd and be pleasantly surprised if you timed your visit just right!

Is It Better to Go to the Colosseum in the Morning or Afternoon?

Visiting the Colosseum either in the early morning or late afternoon is typically the best choice. In the early morning, you’ll beat both the crowds and the heat of the day, which is especially beneficial during the summer months.

Accessing the Colosseum right when it opens provides a more serene, crowd-free environment to explore and truly appreciate the historical significance of the site. On the other hand, visiting in the late afternoon allows you to experience the Colosseum under the softer, golden light of the setting sun, which brings a unique beauty to the structure and makes for stunning photographs.

However, keep in mind that afternoon visits may be slightly more crowded than morning ones. Ultimately, the best time to visit the Colosseum depends on your personal preference and schedule.

Jump to the bottom of the post? No problem!

What Do You Wear to the Colosseum Tour?

When planning your outfit for a Colosseum tour, comfort should be your top priority. This means wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will likely be on your feet for several hours!

Lightweight clothing is advisable for the hot summer months, while layers are a good option for the cooler seasons. Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen for sun protection (even in the winter). It’s also a good idea to bring a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella, as the weather in Rome can be unpredictable.

Remember, the Colosseum is a historical site, so dressing respectfully is always appreciated.

Passionate child-friendly guides with years of experience will teach your kids about the history of gladiatorial fights. They are provided with armor and (wooden) weapons as instructors teach them the skills necessary to ‘compete’ in one of the ‘bloody’ games at the end of the session.

Travelers will frequently spot this classic tote at airports and hotels around the world for good reason. It folds up easily for storage when not in use, and it has a roomy main compartment with a small interior pocket for a phone, boarding pass and a cardholder. Longchamp's Le Pliage Large tote is made of the brand's durable water-resistant nylon and finished with its signature embossed leather trim.

What our editors say:

I love traveling with my Longchamp Le Pliage tote. It's big enough to hold a laptop and all other essentials, and it has both a zipper and a snap-close leather flap, so you won't have to worry about anything falling out during travel. It is versatile enough to use throughout your vacation as a handbag, or you can fold it up and store it away once you reach your destination. The Le Pliage tote is made of nylon, so it is water-resistant and easy to wipe clean after traveling. There is a small interior pocket that can hold a boarding pass, phone or cardholder, or you can pop in a separate organizer from Amazon for multiple interior compartments. The Le Pliage tote comes in a variety of colors, so there's something for everyone. – Nicola Wood , Senior Editor

Leilani Osmundson | U.S. News

Price: $30 or less

If you're looking to travel light and maximize leg space, this Cotopaxi hip pack is ideal. Strap it around your waist or shoulder for hands-free travel, and reach your wallet or passport quickly. There's a spacious main compartment for your phone, wallet and boarding pass. Plus, a front zippered compartment can hold things like gum or earbuds. Constructed of 100% fabric scraps, each hip pack is sustainable and one-of-a-kind.

My top priority when traveling by plane is ample leg room, so Cotopaxi fanny packs are the perfect under-the-seat choice. I like the smaller Kapai 1.5 L Hip Pack for storing my essentials on shorter flights: phone, wallet, tissues, lip balm and earbuds. (There's also a 3L version .) For longer flights, the larger Allpa X 4L Hip Pack can fit a lot more, including a small book, Nintendo Switch and snack. – Leilani Osmundson , Senior Digital Producer

Price: $85 or less

This versatile tote is constructed with recycled nylon, which makes it easy to clean as well as sustainable. The padded bottom helps to protect your laptop and other contents. The main compartment has a zippered pocket and a 13-inch laptop sleeve. You can carry the bag with its tote straps or over the shoulder, and there's an exterior slip pocket for small items.

My favorite thing about this bag is that it's structured, but also easily pliable when it's time to stow it underneath my seat. The exterior pocket allows for easy access to small items like earbuds and hand sanitizer, and the larger main compartment is roomy enough for my laptop, 32-ounce water bottle, snacks, a small toiletry bag and a book. I also appreciate its sleek simplicity and sustainable materials. – Ann Henson , Assistant Managing Editor

Fila Argus 5 Laptop Backpack on street.

Suzanne Mason | U.S. News

Price: $70 or less

Perfect as a work, gym or travel bag, this durable backpack has multiple pockets to keep everything organized wherever you roam. The budget-friendly backpack has a spacious main compartment with an internal mesh pocket and a separate 15-inch laptop compartment. Its padded straps provide comfort while carrying the bag for long periods of time, and the front zippered compartment is ideal for a boarding pass, pen or phone.

I love my Fila Argus 5 Laptop Backpack. I use it for both travel and for work. The backpack has a pocket in the back separating the main space in the back. I usually carry my iPad or laptop there and use the rest of the space to carry any items I couldn't fit in my luggage or trinkets that I'm bringing back for souvenirs. The front pocket I love because it's a zippered space where I can put my important traveling documents and other miscellaneous items needed for my travels. The backpack straps are wide and padded making it comfortable to wear on my back. The backpack is small enough to fit under a plane seat if you need to access the bag while in flight. – Suzanne Mason , Editor

Osprey Nebula 32 in red leaning against a tree.

Zach Watson | U.S. News

Price: $140 or less

This spacious backpack offers the design features of a more technical backpack − like a removable webbing belt along with top and bottom compression straps − but with an emphasis on everyday needs. There are numerous interior pockets to keep all of your travel essentials securely stowed, a TSA-approved laptop sleeve and a front zippered organization pocket. The exterior has two deep, adjustable side pockets that can fit two Nalgene-size water bottles. The Osprey Nebula 32 features two padded straps and a breathable back to help make carrying the bag more comfortable, even in humid climates.

My Osprey Nebula 32 is in the running for my oldest personal possession; I've used it for over a decade. That means this Nebula pack started as a college backpack, lugging my textbooks between classes in Chicago snowstorms before joining me in Washington, D.C., where it kept my belongings safe on my humid (and occasionally rainy) bike commutes. Now, I primarily use my backpack for hiking and flying, and it still holds up remarkably well despite my regular mistreatment. I don't intend to replace my go-to personal item anytime soon, so this Osprey backpack has absolutely justified its admittedly high upfront cost. – Zach Watson , Senior Editor

Duncan Backpack in gray on seat.

Alissa Grisler | U.S. News

Price: $59.99 or less

Durable and ideal for everyday use or adventures afar, this backpack has a simple design with plenty of packing space. The spacious interior can hold a lot, including your toiletry bag, reading material, change of clothes and more. The laptop sleeve and variety of compartments help to keep items organized and in place. The exterior offers adjustable padded shoulder straps and a waist strap for comfort, a headphone opening, two mesh pockets and a front zippered compartment.

When purchasing a bag, I am looking for something that is durable and multifunctional. With its many storage compartments and large carrying capacity (perfect for the chronic over-packer or anyone who just can't say no to a souvenir), this bag is perfect for both travel and everyday use. – Alissa Grisler , Editor

Rachael Hood | U.S. News

Lightweight and constructed with water repellent nylon, this bag is durable, yet sophisticated. There are two large front pockets for smaller items like a 3-1-1 bag, headphones, wipes and small travel essentials, plus a side pocket for a water bottle or small items. Inside, the spacious interior compartment has a large zippered pocket, two slip pockets and a mesh pocket for keeping things organized, in addition to room for a toiletry bag, in-flight needs and souvenirs you find along the way. The bag features a separate zippered laptop compartment on the back, along with a trolley sleeve to attach it to your carry-on bag, like the coordinating Plume Cabin Size Spinner . What's more, it folds flat to save space when not in use.

I bought my original Lipault City Plume bag for my first trip to Europe over a decade ago. It's been a top pick for my travels for years, and it still looks and works great. The updated City Plume 24H Bag 2.0 is beautifully constructed, stays looking great even through the rigors of travel, fits perfectly under the seat and holds a lot. – Rachael Hood, Senior Editor
