Double-decker bus and city bus collide in Manhattan, sending 18 people to hospitals
NEW YORK — A crash involving a double-decker tour bus and a city bus in Manhattan Thursday evening sent 18 people to hospitals for treatment, fire and EMS officials said.
Reports of a major vehicle crash came in just after 7 p.m., Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy with the New York Fire Department’s Division 1 Unit said. Emergency personnel found what he described as a serious accident, with the larger bus adding complications.
“We’ve had a few minor challenges in the double decker bus — going through the windows, taking people out,” New York EMS Division 1 Deputy Chief Paul Hopper said.
Ladders and ropes were required to get some people down because of crash damage to the bus, Murphy said.
Many of those injured have cuts, bruises, scrapes, along with suspected fractures and head and neck injuries, Hopper said.
“None have any life-threatening injury,” said Hopper, who added that about 63 other passengers requested evaluations by a doctor who was at the scene.
Hopper and Murphy said they couldn’t speculate about what led up to the crash.
“I heard the lady next to me scream, so I looked up and I saw this bus barreling towards us,” Ishrak Jahan, a passenger on one bus, told CBS News New York. “I just saw glass everywhere for a second. It was honestly like I was in a movie ... I saw blood. I immediately called 911.”

A double-decker tour bus and a city bus collided on a New York City street Thursday evening — sending 27 people to the hospital while another 50 were treated at the scene, authorities said.
The sight-seeing tour bus crashed into the back of an MTA express bus on East 23rd Street and First Avenue in Manhattan at about 7:15 p.m., FDNY officials said.
The tour bus seemingly blew a red light and slammed into the X27 bus, which was carrying about 20 New Yorkers onboard, according to an MTA official.
Luckily, none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries, the authorities said.
Both buses were packed at the time of the crash — leading to a high number of passengers being evaluated.
“Anytime you have two buses involved, you have a significant number of patients that likely need to be treated — so seeing that quantity of people right away, I think the units did a very good job of getting them off the bus quickly and taking them to the appropriate resources,” FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy said at the scene.
Many of the injuries were minor cuts, bruises, and scrapes. Some, however, suffered fractures and head and neck injuries, EMS Deputy Chief Paul Hopper added.
“We’re all quite fortunate it was not much worse,” Hopper said.
Murphy said that the bus consisting of two levels complicated the rescue efforts as firefighters had to break open windows and use ladders and ropes to get passengers down from the top level of the double-decker bus.
The driver of the sight-seeing bus reportedly sped through a red light ahead of the collision, according to New York City Transit President Richard Davey.
“There were 20 New Yorkers on the X27 just trying to get home this evening — plus our bus operator — when this tour bus behind us seemed to have blown a red light and T-boned our bus,” Davey said. “…And as I understand, it was going so fast, it actually hit it twice.”
He added that the MTA bus operator, a 15-year-veteran of the agency, who was driving the Bay-Ridge-bound bus was OK.
“A good operator was banged up, but with no life-threatening injuries, thank goodness,” Davey said. “But [it] certainly was a harrowing moment for him and you know, a harrowing moment, frankly, for the another 26 or so, passengers on on the big bus behind us.”
The tour bus driver was issued a summons, according to police sources.
The open-deck bus is operated by the tourism company TopView — which offers a variety of bus tours around the city.
The bus company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment and when reached by phone, an employee who answered had not yet heard about the crash.

None of the injuries to anyone involved appeared to be life-threatening, they added.
Efforts to rescue people on board the tour bus were made difficult by the size of the bus, FDNY officials said at a media briefing. People had to be pulled out of windows and removed from the upper deck with the help of a ladder.

FDNY: Dozens injured in crash involving double-decker bus, MTA bus in Manhattan
By Dick Brennan
Updated on: July 6, 2023 / 11:14 PM EDT / CBS New York
NEW YORK -- Dozens of people were injured in a crash involving two buses in Manhattan on Thursday, FDNY officials say.
It happened just after 7:15 p.m. at East 23rd Street and First Avenue in Kips Bay.
There was a tangled mess of metal and glass after an X38 MTA bus and a TopView Sightseeing double-decker bus crashed.
"The impact felt like it was almost an earthquake. The whole bus was rattling and shaking," said Ishrak Jahan, who was on the eastbound city bus. "I heard the lady next to me scream, so I looked up and I saw this bus barreling towards us ... I just saw glass everywhere for a second. I, you know, it was honestly like I was in a movie. It took a couple of seconds for me to snap back to reality when everyone started screaming. I saw blood."
Yesterday evening, #FDNY units responded to the intersection of East 23 Street and 1st Avenue for a bus collision. In total 67 patients were evaluated for injuries, 32 of those were transported to local hospitals. Pillan and his family were on the tour bus as it headed up First Avenue.
"A lot of people thrown out of their seats. Injured, a lot of injuries. A lot of old people injured," he said.
Some passengers, like Paulina Rychel, were hit by a wave of glass.
"I heard it before I felt it. I heard the boom and then I felt it," she said.
Firefighters had a challenge taking people off the second deck of the tour bus and going through windows to take people out.
Fire officials say 27 people have been taken to local hospitals, including the tour bus driver, and about 50 others are being checked out.
MTA investigators say the tour bus was at fault in the accident.
"This tour bus ... seemed to have blown a red light and T-boned our bus. Hit it actually twice, it was going so fast, we think," New York City Transit President Richard Davey said.
According to officials, no one suffered life-threatening injuries, and most of the injuries involved cuts, bruises, some suspected fractures, and some head and neck injuries.
"We're all quite fortunate it was not much worse," Hopper said.
Passengers were relieved the injuries were not more serious.
Rachel thought she was taking the safe way home.
"It's crazy because I'm always like, oh, the bus is so safe and I never take the subway because the bus is better. Yeah, it's crazy," she said.
Police sources tell CBS New York the tour bus driver will be summonsed for allegedly running the red light.

Bus crash NYC: Dozens injured after double-decker tour bus, MTA bus collide in Manhattan
NEW YORK CITY -- Dozens of people were injured after a double-decker tour bus collided with an MTA bus in Manhattan Thursday night, according to officials.
The FDNY says a Topview NYC double-decker tour bus crashed into an MTA bus on 1st Ave and E. 23rd Street around 7 p.m.
Police say the MTA X38 express bus had the right of way as it traveled through the intersection east on 23rd Street. The tour bus sailed through a red light heading north on 1st Avenue and t-boned the MTA bus.
"This tour bus behind us seems to have run a red light and t-boned our bus, hit it twice, it was going so fast I think," MTA Transit President Richard Davey said.
Both of the buses appeared to be fully occupied at the time of the crash. The MTA bus was standing room only at the time of the crash.
Dozens of people were injured, with some victims taken to the hospital and others treated at the scene.
FDNY officials said they expected the number of injuries to fluctuate, but said most of the victims appeared to suffer minor injuries like cuts, bruises and scrapes. None of the victims had life-threatening injuries.
"Any time you have two buses involved you have a significant number of patients that likely need to be treated," said FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy.
Firefighters immediately mobilized for this mass casualty incident. In cell phone video, first responders could be seen rescuing passengers from the upper deck of the tour bus.
Some of the passengers on the double-decker bus had to be removed through the window.
EMS guided the injured to be triaged.
The driver of the tour bus will receive a summons, according to sources. There's no appearance of criminality at this time.
The incident is active and ongoing.

Manhattan bus crash leaves 32 people hospitalized, dozens more evaluated for injuries
According to the MTA, an X27 express bus — which operates between Manhattan and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn — was traveling eastbound on East 23rd Street heading for the FDR Drive when it was broadsided by a double-decker tour bus that may have blown through a red light while traveling northbound on 1st Avenue.
Both buses were relatively full at the time of the collision, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy of Division 1 and Deputy Chief Paul Hopper of EMS Division 1. The MTA reported that 26 passengers and the driver were on board the X27 at the time.
The responding units worked quickly to rescue individuals from both vehicles, using ladders and ropes at times to get individuals trapped on the top of the tour bus after one of the egresses had been damaged in the wreck.
“Units quickly put up some ladders, and used some ropes to lower the injured people down,” Murphy explained. “They did a really nice job. All the units worked well together.”
As of 10 a.m. Friday morning, the Fire Department reported that 32 individuals had been taken to local hospitals for treatment of various injuries; 67 people were medically evaluated following the crash. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Hopper said. The injuries varied from minor cuts and bruises to fractures.
The cause of the crash remains unknown and under investigation, Fire Department sources said. MTA New York City Transit President Richard Davey, however, laid the blame for the crash on the tour bus operator, which — based on preliminary reports — apparently ran a red light.
“It’s certainly what our operator reported, some of our customers reported, and as I understand it, some of the customers on the tour bus reported,” Davey said. “He was proceeding down 23rd [Street] here to get on the FDR [Drive] with a green light. At that point, the tour bus coming up 1st Avenue t-boned the bus. And as I understand it, it was going so fast it actually hit it twice. It bounced back, and bounced back in again to our bus.”

32 people were hospitalized after a double decker and a city bus crashed in Manhattan on Thursday night, according to authorities.
The collision, which happened at East 23rd Street and First Avenue in the Kips Bay neighborhood, occurred around 7pm, Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy with the New York Fire Department’s Division 1 Unit said in a press conference on Thursday night, per CBS News . Emergency responders found a “serious accident,” he added.
During the press conference, New York EMS Division 1 Deputy Chief Paul Hopper shared that 18 passengers had been taken to the hospital — none of whom had life-threatening injuries — and that about 63 additional people were being evaluated by a doctor on the scene. Injuries included cuts, bruises, and suspected fractures in addition to head and neck injuries. The tour bus driver was one of the passengers taken to the hospital.

During the Thursday night press conference, Murphy described the rescue efforts and said responders needed to use ladders and rope to get passengers out of the buses due to crash damage.
Hopper also said the EMS operation had been smooth, but added that “we had a few minor challenges in the double decker bus — going through the windows, taking people out." He said that the buses appeared to have been “fully occupied.”
"This tour bus ... seemed to have blown a red light and T-boned our bus. Hit it actually twice, it was going so fast, we think," New York City Transit President Richard Davey said, according to CBS New York . "The impact felt like it was almost an earthquake. The whole bus was rattling and shaking," Ishrak Jahan, who was on the eastbound city bus, told the outlet.

Medics respond after a double-decker tour bus collided with an MTA bus on East 23rd Street and 1st Avenue in Manhattan, New York City on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
An MTA X27 bus and a double-decker tour bus collided at E. 23rd St. and 1st Ave. in Gramercy at about 7:17 p.m., FDNY officials and an MTA spokeswoman said.
Cop sources said that the tour bus t-boned the MTA bus which had the right of way, in the intersection.
First responders arrived to find an egress damaged on the tour bus and resorted to lowering injured passengers on the bus’ second level using ropes and ladders.
The 27 people hospitalized are not facing life-threatening injuries, said Deputy Chief Paul Hopper of EMS Division 1.
“Many injuries are just cuts, bruises, scrapes, some suspected fractures, some head and neck injuries as well,” he said at the scene.
“We are evaluating approximately 63 additional people. Both buses seem to have been fairly fully occupied,” Hopper said. “That number may fluctuate a little bit down and hopefully no one else will come out as seriously injured.”
“Anytime you have two buses involved, you have a significant number of patients that likely need to be treated,” FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy added.
There was a doctor on scene evaluating patients Thursday evening, Hopper said.
“We’re all quite fortunate it was not much worse,” he added.

Driver charged in Brooklyn crash involving MTA bus that left 14 injured
EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A woman was charged after allegedly setting off a chain-reaction crash Sunday night in Brooklyn that involved an MTA bus and left over a dozen people injured.
Authorities say around 8 p.m. 23-year-old Chandiana Jean was driving a Chevy Impala when it rear-ended a Toyota Sienna at the intersection of Essex Street and New Lots Avenue. The impact sent the Impala into the intersection and the car struck a Ford Escape.
Officials say the Impala was then hit by an eastbound MTA bus on the B15 route.
At least 14 people were hurt. Authorities say a 44-year-old woman, who was in the back of the Impala, was rushed to the Brookdale University Hospital in critical condition.
The other people who were injured, nine men and four women, were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Jean was taken to Jamaica Hospital after the crash and was later charged with possession of a forged instrument and aggravated unlicensed operator.
The MTA bus was towed away from the scene Monday morning, but the debris remained in the middle of this intersection.
People who live in the area say this intersection would be a lot safer if the stop signs were replaced with traffic lights.

Eleven counts of DUI with serious bodily injury were filed last Thursday against Bryan Howard, who already was facing eight counts of DUI-manslaughter in connection with the accident two weeks ago.
Court records show Howard, 41, has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges and has waived his appearance for an arraignment next month.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Howard drove his 2001 Ford pickup into the center line on a two-lane road and struck the bus early in the morning of May 14, causing it to veer off the road, strike a tree and flip over.
The seasonal farmworkers were on their way to harvest watermelon at Cannon Farms in Dunnellon, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Orlando in north-central Florida’s Marion County. The crash occurred in a rural area of rolling hills with numerous horse farms and abundant fruit and vegetable fields.
According to the arrest report, Howard had bloodshot and watery eyes and slurred speech after the crash, which he said he didn’t remember.
He told an investigator that the night before the early-morning crash he had taken two anti-seizure drugs and medication for high blood pressure in addition to smoking marijuana oil. He said he woke up about five hours later and was driving to a methadone clinic where he receives daily medication for a chipped vertebra, according to the affidavit.
Howard failed several sobriety tests and was arrested, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

'It's sad': Survivors of bus crash that killed 8 farmworkers return to site
A modified school bus , similar to the one that overturned two week ago, killing eight farmworkers, pulled off the side of the road Tuesday night approximately 100 yards from the crash site on west State Road 40.
Eight men got off the bus, which is white with red stripes, red wheels and red fenders. They slowly approached a memorial dedicated to the ones who died.
One of the men had his right leg heavily bandaged and was sitting in a wheelchair. Rigoberto Gregorio Vazquez, 30, from Queretaro, Mexico, stared at a white sign that says "Jesus Saves."
A week ago, the site was filled with huge crosses , flowers, candles, Mexican flags, colorful paintings and other images honoring the eight workers who died. Now, aside from the white sign, only several candles and flowers are left. All the artifacts and mementos have disappeared, with no one knowing where they went.
Through translator Jacqueline Flores, Vazquez said "it's sad," making reference to the ones who died while going to work.
Vazquez and his colleagues gathered late Tuesday afternoon for a vigil for the eight who lost their lives on May 14 when the bus they were traveling in was sideswiped by an older model pickup truck on the two-lane roadway.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said seven of the 53 workers died at the scene. The eighth died at a local hospital. Dozens like Vazquez were transported to various hospitals in Ocala and Gainesville.
Authorities said the bus was heading west when the pickup truck, traveling in the opposite direction, crossed into the bus' path, hitting it.
The truck's driver, Bryan Mclean Howard, was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later arrested. Howard told investigators he smoked marijuana oil and took prescription pills the night before the crash. He said he was on his way to an Ocala methadone clinic when the crash occurred, according to the arrest affidavit.
The Dunnellon man told FHP officials he doesn't remember anything about the crash. He said when he got out of the truck, someone told him he was involved in a crash with a bus.
Howard, 41, is charged with eight counts of DUI manslaughter and 11 counts of DUI with serious bodily injury. He is being held without bail at the Marion County Jail.
During Tuesday's 10-minute service, the Rev. Father Zbigniew Stradomski, one of two associate pastors at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala, read aloud a passage from the Gospel of Luke. The message was to be prepared to meet the Lord.
At the conclusion of the service, Stradomski said in English: "I try to give them hope. All are suffering and I blessed them, leaving them with hope, love and faith."
Reina Mendez said those who came with Vazquez were too traumatized to talk. She said they've not returned to work because they're injured.
Flores, whose 11-year-old daughter, Guisela, was by her side, said the men at the vigil were afraid to go on the bus because it reminded them of the crash.
On the day of the crash, the workers had left a hotel in Gainesville, where they had been staying, and were on their way to Cannon Farms. The workers had their work visas.
Vazquez arrived May 5 from Mexico and started work on May 9. He said they picked and packed watermelons at Cannon Farms. Vazquez said their work day started between 8 and 9 a.m. and finished between 9 and 10 p.m. Troopers said the crash took place shortly after 6:30 a.m. Mendez said the season usually lasts four to six weeks.
Speaking through Flores, Vazquez said he was sitting near the front of the bus and was asleep. He said he was awakened when the bus driver yelled that somebody was in front of him.
Vazquez said he tried holding on. He said the bus swerved, hit a tree, and then "they all start falling on each other."
