We have been on many excursions, and this has them beat by far. From the first few minutes, we all felt like we had been friends with the guide for years. He provided us with island history, legends, customs, and how the locals show respect to their Aunties and Uncles. There were no safety concerns; the vehicle was comfortable, clean and in great shape. If you get the chance to book with Maui Tour Company, do it!

The best investment we ever made!! Our guide was cool and calm and actually ventured out to show you things nobody knows — he had the knowledge and expertise you need in a guide. We cliff jumped together — ate lunch together — and got to know each other on a personal level. Even just spending 5 hours with him parked in a car would be worth it — his stories are amazing and he has truly found the meaning of life and happiness!! Best trip ever thanks to you!!

Wow!! This was amazing! Zak gave all we asked for and more! Caves, waterfalls, cliff jumping, great waves for black and red sand beach swimming and more. Zak shared so much information about the island of Maui and its people and he gave our mixed group ( 2 seniors, 2 young adults and 3 kids, 7, 10 and 12 yrs old) an amazing fun filled day tailored specifically to our group. We wanted to do it again! Thank you Marty and Zak!

We had so much fun with Marty! Cliff Jumping, spelunking, water falls, banana bread, and just plain old having fun with a really cool guy! He taught us about the land, it’s history, people, animals and plants to boot. An all around great time and worry free. Do yourself a favor and hire Marty for your Road to Hana ride, and pass on the “Road to Divorce”. Marty makes adventure easy.

a close up of food

We had a great time on this tour! Billy was our driver (a great driver) and he was very friendly, fun, informative and accommodating. When they offer the poncho, take it! You will be glad you did!! We ended with a delicious breakfast at Maui Tropical Plantation.

I always wanted to do Road to Hāna but was always intimidated by driving the daunting, windy, wet roads on my own. So I decided to book this trip and I was very grateful I did! Joe the tour guide was wonderful. He explained things along the drive so it was informative! We stopped at different spots to take pictures/use bathroom. There were three main stops, one for lunch and then the black sand beach and a gorgeous fresh waterfall lagoon. It was paradise and I’m glad I was able to have Joe drive while I could enjoy the views! Highly recommend!

Our trip was fabulous! Billy and Alika were amazing tour guides/drivers! They helped us understand the Hawaiian culture more. They go the extra mile to make the excursion amazing, including providing jackets at the top! Highly recommend using Valley Isle Tours!

The whole experience was excellent. The tour itself was beautiful, scenic, and a must-do for anyone traveling to Maui. And our guide, Travis, was fantastic! He knew every detail of the roads, was an excellent driver, provided tons of relevant history and information, and kept everyone engaged and having fun. He also seemed to know everyone along the way (relatives and friends), and provided lots of good tips about following the rules posted on signs, being respectful, etc. He really did make the trip one to remember.

We had an amazing day. The beauty of what we saw is beyond words. Moa was the best guide. He made it fun and kept us laughing g and informed the whole way. Swimming at Black Sand Beach and in the waterfall were so much fun.

Yvonne our guide was the best! Witty, fantastic fund of knowledge. Brought all the great Hawaiian vibe that is needed for this day long road trip! Yvonne you exceeded our expectations!

Billy picked me up at my hotel and drove us up to the volcano rim for this beautiful experience. Abe gave u a lot of good info as well as kept us warm with coat like ponchos. Of course the sunrise was just breathtaking. A one in a life time experience. Then, we had a very good breakfast, at a great restaurant. I wasn't expecting that! I am so glad I did this tour!

This trip was incredible. Billy our driver was great. He was informative, funny, and most importantly friendly. We became ohana right from the beginning. Billy got us the best spot to watch the sunrise. He’s been doing the Haleakala tour for a long time and his love of his job shows. I would highly recommend Valley Isle to anyone. We did the road to Hana with them earlier in the week and that was awesome too. The sunrise tour is a must do if you visit Maui. I’d also recommend requesting Billy as your driver. You won’t be disappointed.

REGENERATIVE TOURISM FOR HĀNA

We had the opportunity to speak with Kainoa Carlson with @hinowdaily back in February where we delved into the significance of embracing a responsible mindset when traveling. It is crucial for visitors to prioritize leaving their destination in a better condition than they found it and to seek immersive experiences that go beyond the typical Maui vacation.

One prime example of promoting sustainable and regenerative tourism on Maui is through legally guided tours on the road to Hana. These tours play a vital role in fostering a mindset of environmental responsibility and contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the local ecosystem. Every year, thousands of travelers embark on the breathtaking journey along the road to Hana, often utilizing their own private vehicles. We strongly encourage considering the option of taking a guided tour, as it serves as an effective means to minimize the impact of visitors on the road to Hana and the Hana community. By doing so, visitors actively contribute to the preservation of this remarkable route and the overall well-being of the local community.

TESTIMONIALS

"The sights were very nice but what made the tour VERY SPECIAL was our driver. I believe her name was Malu. She was nothing short of tremendous, sharing her knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture along the way. I cannot imagine there is a better guide in all the islands to talk about the important aspects of the tour and what it means to be a Hawaiian citizen. Thank you thank you thank you for an amazing experience !!!"

Nowhere else can you climb from sea level to 10,023′ in less than an hour. At the summit, the 3,000′ deep crater you peer down into is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide, and 21 miles in circumference.

Encounter the elegant Silversword plant, found nowhere else in the world as well as Hawaii’s state bird, the Nene goose. Haleakalā is home to hundreds of rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Learn the importance of protecting their habitats and upholding the National Park mission of Preservation and Conservation.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Crater Sights

Maui’s rich farming and ranching history is still evident by the vast pastures that line the side of the mountain. Kula’s cool weather and rich volcanic soil make the area an ideal spot for a number of Lavender, Protea, and Macadamia Nut farms.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Makawao

The Hawaiian Cowboys or Paniolos have roots set deep in the town of Makawao. This small town still has hitching rails at storefronts just as the locals once used to tie up their horses.

Today Pa’ia is a popular surf destination, however, Pa’ia’s history is as intriguing as it is fascinating. Learn about how the Sugar Plantations shaped this town and the culture of the island, and how this small north shore town was once a gathering place for entertainment and fun.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Haiku

Like Paia, Ha’iku has its roots in agriculture. The Pineapple industry built this small, rural town, with the pineapple cannery as the center of the action. Ha’iku also played a pivotal part in World War 2 by being the home of the Fourth Division Marines during the 1940s.

How to Spend a Perfect Long Weekend on Maui

Explore all that the “Valley Isle” has to offer with a guided rainforest tour, snorkeling adventure, luxe shopping, and so much more.

If you’re an ocean lover, you’ll be thrilled by the island’s white and black sand beaches, vibrant marine life, and towering waves. If you prefer to keep things on land, you’ll be wowed by the twists and turns of the Road to Hāna, a 64-mile stretch of road that winds through the rainforest and connects the towns of Kahului and Hāna, as well as the scenic drive up to Haleakalā National Park, which is said to be one of the most remarkable places in the world to catch sunrise and sunset. (And we can attest: It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen.) Meanwhile, if you enjoy perusing the finer things in life while on vacation, rest assured, on Maui there are myriad art galleries, boutique shops, and dining options to suit any taste.

Some things to know upfront: Maui is many things, but walkable is not necessarily one of them. The second largest of the Hawaiian islands, Maui spans 727 square miles and is primarily divided into resort communities along the West and South coasts, with more local dwellings situated in central, Northern, and East Maui. While each of the resort communities is equipped with an array of shopping, dining, and entertainment, if you hope to venture beyond the resort you’re staying in, you’ll definitely want to get a rental car while visiting the island.

Getting around aside, it’s time to discover all that Maui has to offer. Knowing just how abundant the experiences on Maui are, ahead we outline how to spend a long, four-day weekend on the island, plus recommendations for what to do if you have a bit more time to spare. Here's what to do in Maui to make the most of your trip.

Friday Afternoon

hotel wailea at night veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

If your flight schedule allows, arrive in Maui by Friday morning or afternoon. Once you’ve touched down, pick up your rental car at the Kahului Airport and drive 30 minutes south to Hotel Wailea , Hawaiʻi's only Relais & Châteaux property and Maui’s sole adults-only luxe hotel.

To make the most of your stay, we suggest checking into a Celebration Ocean View Suite . The 750-square-foot escapes feature a bedroom with a king-size bed, deep soaking tub, and large rainfall shower; an open living area and kitchenette, and a private lanai to take in the stunning tropical surroundings. Another perk of booking a Celebration Suite? Breakfast at The Restaurant is included with your stay and the menu is so mouthwatering, you’ll be inspired to start each and every day at one of the ocean-view tables lining its balcony.

After you’ve checked in and gotten settled—and depending on how much time you have to kill before dinner—unwind with an in-room massage , lounge by the pool, or head up to the stunning open-air gym. With picturesque 180-degree views of the landscape and ocean below, the gym at Hotel Wailea makes working out feel like anything but a chore.

Friday Evening

hotel wailea the birdcage veranda how to spend a perfect weekend in maui

Allow yourself to adjust to the time change with a sunset dinner and early evening on your first night in Maui. If you’re celebrating something particularly special, consider booking The Treehouse ahead of time. By doing so, you’ll get the pleasure of eating a private 7-course dinner in a treehouse among a canopy of mango and avocado trees overlooking the ocean.

Whether the Treehouse is already booked or you simply prefer a different dining set-up, The Birdcage is worth visiting (and staying for a while). The open-air restaurant used to be the hotel’s lobby thanks to its breathtaking 180-degree views of the property and the Pacific beyond. Now, the beautifully decorated, cosmopolitan-inspired space, which was designed by Philpotts Interiors , is a restaurant serving freshly prepared sushi and other Japanese grill specialties, as well as a variety of tantalizing craft cocktails and mocktails.

Beyond the cuisine, The Birdcage has a beloved clientele: lovebirds. The small, vibrant parrots, which mate for life, flock to the rafters of the restaurant—typically in pairs—filling the space with whimsical birdsong that feels straight out of a tropical fairytale. It’s a sight (and sound) you won’t want to miss. Speaking of sound, The Birdcage also offers live music on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. By the time the tunes wind down on night one, chances are, you’ll be dreaming of snuggling into your hotel room's plush bed with premium linens.

Saturday Morning/Afternoon

waterfall in maui veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

Fuel your morning with an early breakfast at The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea. While many hotel breakfasts leave something to be desired, The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea offers a menu that will leave you wishing you had more room. From the flavorful Wailea Benedict and the bountiful Lanai Breakfast to the juicy island fruit plate and unforgettable garlic sticky rice, The Restaurant will inspire you to eat all your breakfasts on property. While you’re there, be sure to treat yourself to a coconut iced matcha to kickstart your day—you won’t regret it.

After breakfast, pack your backpack, apply your SPF, and hop into a luxury sprinter van to explore 618 breathtaking twists and turns through Maui’s world-renowned Road to Hāna. (You’ll have to book this experience ahead of time through Road to Hāna Tours —specifically, we suggest the Small Group Road to Hāna Tour).

From the comfort of your sprinter, you’ll get to take in the island’s verdant rainforest, towering oceanside cliffs, beautiful rainbow eucalyptus trees, and more. Outside of the van—on several scheduled stops—you can look forward to indulging in Aunty Sandy’s famous banana bread, swimming in a waterfall pool, and exploring Waiʻānapanapa State Park.

On the tour, you’ll also get to visit Maui’s North Shore, where Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles sunbathe by the dozen (As intrigued as you may be, be sure to respect their space—the majestic sea creatures are protected by the Federal Endangered Species Act, as well as Hawai‘i State Law, both of which recommend keeping a distance of at least 10 feet ).

In total, the tour is 10 hours long and features pick-up and drop-off at Hotel Wailea (or other nearby hotels). Although 10 hours may feel like a major commitment on one of your few days in Maui, the sights and experiences along the Road to Hāna prove to be 100 percent worth it, especially from the comfort of a luxury tour van.

Saturday Evening

monkeypod kitchen veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

After 10 hours of exploration, you’ll likely feel beat. You have two options: Go back to Hotel Wailea to try yet another sure-to-please item off the menu at The Birdcage or explore the local food scene in Wailea by stopping in at Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman. The popular craft food kitchen is open later than many restaurants in the area, so you won’t have to rush to get there or to complete your meal.

In terms of cuisine, you can anticipate delectable appetizers, salads, hand-tossed pizzas, and farm-to-table and fresh-caught entrees. From poke tacos, taro ravioli, and lobster deviled eggs to prime rib, seared ahi steak, and coconut cream pie, there’s something for everyone. And let us not forget: Their mai tais are as picture-perfect as they are flavor- and booze-forward.

After dinner, head back to Hotel Wailea to unwind for the evening. Another full day of adventure awaits on Sunday!

Sunday Morning

sunrise at haleakalā national park veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

If you’re up for it, set your alarm for the wee hours of the morning to catch sunrise at Haleakalā National Park . The park is nestled 10,023 feet above sea level and is known to be one of the most beautiful places in the world to watch sunrise and sunset, as well as to stargaze. Depending on how early you’re willing to wake up, you can catch stargazing and sunrise in one fell swoop.

Just keep in mind that this is a popular destination with limited parking. To ensure your viewing pleasure, be sure to book a reservation. To do so, create an account, search your date up to 60 days in advance, and book accordingly . (And be sure to bring a coat or blanket—it’s cold up there. Where it can be in the 70s and 80s in Wailea, the summit can hover around the 30s.)

If you choose not to head up to Haleakalā, instead, wake up early to enjoy the complimentary outrigger experience that Hotel Wailea offers on Sunday mornings. An outrigger canoe isn’t your average canoe; it’s a stabilized, wood-carved vessel considered to be one of Hawai’i’s “most treasured cultural activities.” It’s also the state’s team sport. When paddling in unison in an outrigger, you’re able to move and connect with the water without fear or toppling in; you can peer over the side to see coral reefs and sea turtles in their natural habitat; and you can even surf the waves in. It’s a truly special experience that feels downright spiritual.

Sunday Afternoon

hotel wailea fruit plate veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

Following your early-morning adventures, determine how you want to spend your afternoon to narrow down your breakfast or brunch options.

If you want to go back to Wailea to lounge at the beach or by the pool, or to go shopping at The Shops at Wailea , rely on old faithful (The Restaurant) or grab something like at Brekkie Bowls or Akamai Coffee , both located just down the road from the hotel. Another option? Book a beach picnic through Hotel Wailea and they’ll set you up for a relaxing day at the beach with zero personal prep work.

If you want to spend your afternoon taking in the local art scene, make your way from Haleakalā to Pā'ia Town, a small surf town known for its local shops and galleries, such as Maui Hands (a long-standing gallery that represents 300 local artists) and the Maui Craft Guild (which is a collective of printmakers, jewelers, textile artists, photographers, and more, all of whom display and sell their work under one roof). On the way, stop in at Baked on Maui , a family-owned and operated bakery specializing in pastries and hearty breakfasts alike.

After brunch and gallery hopping, drive 20 minutes over to Wailuku. There, you’ll find Antique Freak , a treasure trove of Maui picker finds, ranging from mercury glass collections and estate jewelry to fine art, vintage clothes, and more. (On the shop’s Instagram , you can even see a walk-through of the store to get an idea of what they offer ahead of time.)

Sunday Evening

mama's fish house veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

After a day of relaxing or shopping, treat yourself to a quintessential last supper: a meal at Mama’s Fish House . Pro Tip: You’ll want to book ahead. Mama’s Fish House is the most popular restaurant not only on the North Shore but in all of Maui. Reservations book out well in advance so if you see one for your desired time or even near it, grab it while you can. If you’re able to get in, treat yourself to a Mai Tai Roa Ae for a job well done and to celebrate your time in Maui. Then, peruse the curated menu of appetizers, soup, salads, entrees, and desserts.

If you opted out of sunrise at Haleakalā National Park, there’s always the option to head there for stargazing. With that in mind, you can drive 38 minutes back to Hotel Wailea or 54 minutes to the summit to take in the celestial wonders Maui has to offer. The summit is open 24 hours a day and doesn’t require a reservation outside of the 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. window, so you can always do this on a whim.

Monday Morning

the ritz carlton maui, kapalua cities under the sea snorkel veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

Whether you’re headed home Monday afternoon or evening, one final thing you’ll absolutely want to make time for is a Ritz-Carlton Ambassadors of the Environment Cities Under the Sea snorkel sesh. A Jean-Michel Cousteau Program, this ultra-informative snorkel adventure teaches participants about Hawai‘i’s unique ocean ecosystems before guiding them to explore it firsthand.

Swimming through waters teeming with a rainbow of creatures, including humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (the Hawaiian state fish), Rainbow Wrasse, Moorish Idols (i.e. Gill from Finding Nemo), and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles is an experience you’ll never forget. FYI: The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua—where you’ll meet up for the tour—is an hour from Hotel Wailea. On the way there, grab a light bite at Maui Coffee Roasters .

Monday Afternoon

leoda's kitchen and pie shop veranda how to spend the perfect weekend in maui

As you make your way back from snorkeling, make a pit stop at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop for lunch. Nestled along the side of Honoapiʻilani Highway (AKA Highway 30), Leoda’s is easy to overlook but trust us, this is one eatery you’ll want to keep an eye out for. The Olowalu lime pie is to die for, though the eatery also offers a variety of sandwiches, burgers, and salads if you don’t want to skip straight to the sweets.

After lunch, start gearing up to go home or, if you plan to spend more time on Maui, consider incorporating some of the activities below.

More Things to Do on Maui If Time Permits

canoes and palms on the beach

  • Blue Soul Maui : If you end up choosing not to stay at Hotel Wailea or you want to enjoy an outrigger canoe experience on a different day of the week, you can partake in the cultural activity by booking through Blue Soul Maui. With Blue Soul, you can look forward to a spiritual ocean experience that ties you to the water and the lands of Hawai‘i. You can choose from four outrigger tours, as well as a variety of hiking and surfing tours.
  • Maui Off Road Adventures : Looking for a thrill that feels a bit like Jurassic Park in real life? Maui Off Road Adventures is an ATV tour that explores miles of trails through lush terrain, accessible only via ATV or helicopter. (Just an FYI: Prepare to get muddy.)
  • Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours : Not one for mud or bumpy rides? Explore Maui’s lush landscape from above in a Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tour.
  • Kapalua Ziplines : Another way to catch a thrill on land in Maui? On a zipline (or six) looming above the rainforest. At Kapalua Ziplines, 8,500 feet of ziplines are waiting to be explored. With a booking, you can also walk across Hawai‘i’s longest suspension bridge, which sits 1,600 feet above the Northwest Maui coastline.
  • Sail Trilogy : Another memorable dining option? The Captain’s Sunset Dinner with Sail Trilogy. The dinner cruise features a 4-course meal with a view that’s hard to beat.

Maui is home to the best snorkeling in Hawaii, which makes it a huge draw for visitors. While we enjoy snorkeling from the beach, we love treating ourselves to a good snorkeling tour. Snorkeling tours offer trips to difficult-to-access spots, a better chance at spotting a wide variety of marine life, and guides that can help you navigate the process.

But with an abundance of tours offered, it can be difficult to figure out which are the best snorkeling tours on Maui.

After going on many snorkeling tours, we have a list of our favorite snorkeling tours on Maui and we’ve included something for everyone.

In a hurry and just want the quick details on the best snorkeling tours on Maui? We’ve got you covered: 1. The best Molokini snorkeling tour 2. We love this Lanai Coast snorkel sail 3. Enjoy a whale watch/snorkeling combo 4. Get out to Molokini’s back wall on this power raft tour 5. Kayak and snorkel from Olowalu 6. Beach load right from Ka’anapali on this great and convenient tour 7. Enjoy a private snorkeling experience (5% off with code HVG5) 8. This is an awesome Molokini snorkel tour for families 9. Go out from shore with a guide on a private or small group tour

Best Snorkeling Tours on Maui

As I’ve said, we love snorkeling tours. And getting to live on Maui, we’ve been so lucky to experience many different tours. While we have generally liked most of our snorkeling tour experiences, these are the ones that really stand out in terms of the quality of the boat, the crew, and the snorkel locations.

Add these to your shortlist of snorkeling tours to experience on Maui .

1. Kai Kanani Maui Adventure Sunrise Snorkel to Molokini Crater

This is hands-down our favorite Molokini snorkel experience because it is a trip that everyone can enjoy. The biggest pro is that Kai Kanani does a beach loading directly from Wailea/Makena, while most other boats depart from Ma’alaea Harbor, which is much further away. That means two things:

  • You’re not spending half of your trip getting to and from the crater. You get more snorkel time!
  • You are the first boat to arrive at Molokini Crater.

Being the first snorkeling group in the water is a huge perk. Since it is very popular, Molokini can get crowded. It is a real treat to see it empty! By the time the bigger boats show up, you’re on your way to the second snorkeling location , which is usually turtle town.

Book the sunrise Molokini snorkeling tour with Kai Kanani. If sunrise is a bit too early for you, they also offer a later, deluxe Molokini snorkeling tour. The capacity on their catamaran is 80 people, but they keep their total less (40-60 people) to make sure everyone has a bit more room.

And want to experience it before you go? Here’s a video of our sunrise tour experience:

If you’re looking for the BEST trip to Molokini crater, be sure to check out our list of the best Molokini snorkeling tours.

2. Trilogy Discover Lana’i Snorkel

A day trip to Lana’i is a real treat and Trilogy makes this day out even more special. Depart from either Ma’alaea Harbor or Ka’anapali Beach and enjoy breakfast on your way to Lana’i. Depart the boat and head to Hulopo’e Bay, a protected marine reserve, for some snorkeling, hiking, and a bbq lunch.

Honestly, we love snorkeling in Hulopo’e Bay and it is such a beautiful place with plenty of tropical fish and a vibrant coral reef. An absolute treat to be able to experience the beach and water out there.

On the return home enjoy a snack and beverages from the premium bar.

3. Ultimate Lana’i Coast Snorkel

Head out on a snorkeling adventure on a high speed raft. This 3.5 hour tour takes you to the Lana’i coast (conditions dependent) on a small group tour. On our tour (video below) we were lucky enough to see both Hawaiian green sea turtles and spinner dolphins.

If you are visiting Maui during whale season and you can’t decide if you should go whale watching or snorkeling, you don’t have to choose. Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel runs a combo trip so you can do both at the same time.

A quick note: while you can sometimes spot humpback whales on snorkeling trips during the whale watching months on Maui, snorkeling tours are not going out of their way to find whales.

4. Redline Rafting to Molokini Crater Back Wall

This tour isn’t the classic Molokini Crater snorkeling trip and it isn’t for everyone. But for the right (adventurous person), this is an amazing tour option. Nearly every boat company offers tours of Molokini Crater. But Redline Rafting will not only take you to the crater but to the back wall of the crater on their 5-hour snorkel tour.

This tour is perfect for those visitors who are staying in South Maui. The tour leaves from Kihei Boat Ramp which is between Kihei and Wailea, super convenient.

The back wall is deep  — 300+ feet — but your visibility of it will be less, so it looks like it’s falling off into the ocean. It’s also more thrilling than the partially enclosed crater as you’re open to the ocean.

We went out on Redline’s 2-hour snorkel tour to Molokini Crater. We loved how fast of a trip it was to the crater, 15 minutes, and that we got 1 hour 45 minutes to snorkel. The captain had time for us to do the back wall which is usually reserved for the 5-hour tour. See our experience below!

You’ll then continue your snorkel to La Perouse Bay, a spot where you can often find spinner dolphins.

The power raft tour leaves from the Kihei small boat ramp, which is another perk. You don’t need to drive to Maalaea Harbor to start your journey.

Best Maui Snorkeling Tours

5. Kayak Snorkeling with Maui Adventure Tours

Looking for something a little different? Skip the big boat experience (and crowds) and head out with a guide on a kayak. Maui Adventure Tours leaves from Olowalu Beach in West Maui (10-minutes south of Lahaina) to take you out snorkeling the pristine reef and clear water of Olowalu reef. No kayaking experience is required.

While you won’t be paddling to Molokini Crater or Lana’i, you’ll stop at different snorkeling locations and look for turtles, octopus, fish, and more. During whale season, you might even get to see some whales up close.

If you’re planning a trip to Maui, we have a full guide dedicated to planning the best vacation. From where to stay, what to do, and where to eat, we have you covered. Check out our Maui Guide for everything you need to know for a great vacation .

6. Beach Loading Snorkeling Tours with Sea Maui

If you’re staying in Ka’anapali, there’s nothing more convenient than a beach loading snorkeling tour. No driving or parking needed, just head out to Ka’anapali Beach for a great beach loading experience.

Sea Maui offers different snorkeling tours , ranging from 2.5 to 4.5 hours. They stick to snorkeling locations on West Maui, picking the best location that day based on ocean conditions and visibility. All ages are welcome on the tour and kids under 2 get to join for free.

Sea Maui beach loading makes it one of the best snorkeling tours on Maui

We have a ton of great resources for planning the rest of your trip: Find an amazing place to stay on Maui . Plan your trip during the best time to visit Maui . Visit the best beaches the island has to offer. Chow down on affordable and delicious grindz at Maui food trucks .

7. Maui Custom Charters to Coral Gardens and Olowalu Reef

Are you looking to ditch the crowds on your snorkel trip? Try a private charter with Maui Custom Charters. Up to 6 passengers can enjoy sailing to the famous and pristine Olowalu reef or under the Lahaina cliffs in Coral Gardens, two snorkel spots that are only accessible by boat.

Whether you want to snorkel, watch the sunset, enjoy some cocktails, learn to sail, celebrate a special occasion, or just lay back and relax then a private charter is your best option. They can customize the perfect trip as the boat and crew are at your service! Their most popular chartered tours are the morning or afternoon 4 -hour snorkel and sail.

Save 5% on all their charter tours with promo code HVG5!

Best Maui Snorkeling Tour for Families

Finding a good snorkeling tour can be tricky when you’re traveling with kids. Some boats don’t allow very young children and babies on board. And if they do, coaxing your child into the ocean so you can all snorkel together can sometimes be a challenge.

While we’ve taken our preschooler on both Kai Kanani and Sail Maui tours, there are two other tours that we think are exceptional for kids.

Traveling with kids? Here are our favorite kid-friendly beaches on Maui .

8. Four Winds II Molokini Snorkel

Family fun is the focus on the Four Winds Molokini Crater tour . It’s a larger boat tour than you’ll find in our previous recommendations, but they have some specific amenities that can make going with a larger group totally worth it. Note: their boat capacity is 149 people but they advertise that they keep their tours smaller than that to ensure comfortability.

On their Molokini snorkeling tour, you’ll get to snorkel Molokini Crater but kids are front and center on the tour. There is a waterslide (that even adults enjoy), a glass-bottom viewing, cookies, temporary tattoos, and more. In the glass bottom room, a few kids or adults can take a peek at what’s underwater, without actually having to get into the water.

9. Maui Snorkel Tours

This is a unique guided snorkeling tour. They offer shore-based tours , meaning no boats are involved at all. You’ll head out in a very small group with a guide (or a private tour) after a briefing on land about marine biology and how to snorkel.

Why is this great for the family? On a tour boat, there’s no one available to teach you how to properly snorkel. With a guide, they are taking you step by step through how to snorkel, where to snorkel, and equipping you with the knowledge that you can use on future shore snorkeling trips. Whether it’s kids or adults learning, everyone in your family can have a great time underwater and walk away with knowledge about snorkeling and the ocean.

If you want to look for even more tours, head to our Tours & Activities page for Maui for a full list of our recommended snorkeling, whale watching , ziplining, and more tours.

Maui Snorkeling Tour FAQs:

If you’re heading out on your first snorkeling trip or trying to decide if paying for a trip is worth it, we have you covered with some FAQs.

Are snorkeling tours on Maui worth it?

I used to find myself squarely on one side of this debate: snorkeling tours were not worth the money. However, as I’ve done more of them (and gone on great tours), I’ve come to really appreciate that a good snorkeling tour is definitely worth the time money for a number of reasons:

  • You can snorkel in hard-to-access areas: Some tours will take you to spots that are easily accessible from the shore. But others treat you to spots that would be challenging (or impossible) to reach without a boat, like Molokini, spots off the coast of Lana’i, Coral Garden, and Namalu Bay.
  • Access to a naturalist: You’re there to snorkel and have fun, but there’s also something to be said about actually learning more about Hawaii, the ocean, and sea file while you’re on your tour. The best boats come with fantastic naturalists who can educate you on what you’re seeing and answer any questions that you have.
  • A crew dedicated to keeping you safe: Snorkeling is a fun activity but there are times when it isn’t so safe. When you head out on a quality boat tour, you have a crew that is dedicated to making sure their passengers stay safe. That means providing you with good gear, having people in the water to help anyone in distress, and making sure to take you to places that are safe.
  • Excellent gear: We own our own snorkeling gear but we almost always leave that at home and use what our tour provides. Why? The quality of the equipment is great, they take away any hassle of cleaning it, and we get to try out new brands.

Best snorkeling tours on Maui snorkel gear

  • Easy and all-inclusive: Beach days require some planning — bringing the gear, finding a spot, packing enough food and water. A snorkeling tour requires a lot less planning. They take care of the food and drink for you. Just bring your towel and your favorite reef-friendly sunscreen!
  • Better reef and environmental protection: Protecting the reef and the sea life in Hawaii is very important. When you travel on a guided snorkeling tour, there is little chance that you’ll find yourself stepping on and damaging coral or violating any of the animal protection laws that are in place.

While there are a lot of benefits of snorkeling with a tour, that’s not to say that you should skip snorkeling from the shore. If you are an experienced snorkeler and want to visit some of Maui’s best snorkeling spots , you will have a great time.

But we think that doing one good, quality snorkeling tour on Maui is worth it for just about everyone.

Is snorkeling at Molokini Crater worth it?

Molokini Crater is one of the most popular snorkeling destinations in Hawaii. It’s a crescent shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater located just a few miles off Maui’s south shore. It’s also a marine life sanctuary and a Hawaii state seabird sanctuary.

Molokini is a very popular spot, but is it worth it? We think that with the right tour, a trip to Molokini is absolutely worth it. The water is incredibly clear, you’ll see a wider variety of fish than you would snorkeling on the beach, and most tours include additional snorkeling stops, which means you’re not just snorkeling the crater.

That said, not every Molokini Crater snorkeling tour is equally as good. We’ve listed our favorites (and why we picked them) to help you find the right tour for you.

Best snorkeling tours on Maui boat

Is a snorkeling trip to Lana’i worth it?

I have to be honest: we love snorkeling on Lana’i. So we are firmly in the camp that thinks a snorkeling trip to Lana’i is worth it . And there are a few reasons why.

First, it’s another island which is just a fun adventure in itself. Second, there are fewer people who make the trip out there compared to other snorkeling spots. Third, you will often see spinner dolphins along the coast and finding your boat in a pod of dolphins is a memorable experience.

Check out our video of our trip to Lana’i with Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel. It was an adventure on a small power raft and one that we can’t wait to go on again soon.

What can you expect on a snorkeling tour?

While all snorkeling tours are a little bit different, there are some things that you can generally expect to find on your tour

  • A naturalist or experienced guide: These guides can educate you on what you’re seeing as well as how best to keep you and the marine life safe. They are extremely knowledgeable, so when they talk be sure to listen!
  • Snorkeling gear: If you don’t have snorkeling gear (maks, snorkel, fins) your trip will usually provide you with a high-quality set. And they’ll make sure it fits you well so you can have the best experience possible.
  • Food and drinks : It can be a long day out on the water and the tour will usually provide everything you need to stay happy and hydrated. There’s a range as to what you’ll find on board — some tour operators focus on food and drinks as a selling feature while others provide good food, but the meal and bar isn’t their focus.

Prefer to get out on the water without snorkeling? Check out our list of the best sunset cruises on Maui . We have a range of options, including a lively luau cruise, a champagne toast sail, or a full dinner cruise.

Before you head to Maui, read our Maui Guide. It’ll make your trip planning so much easier. From where to stay, what to do, and where to eat, we have you covered. Check out our Maui Guide for everything you need to know for a great vacation .
