Tour Edge E8 Tour Fairway Wood Review

More in fairway woods:.

TaylorMade Qi10 Max Fairway Wood

50 Words or Less

The E8 Tour fairway wood expands Tour Edge’s already-great E8 family to include something for the very best fairway wood players.  Great looks and adjustability plus the distance you expect from Tour Edge Exotics.

Introduction

It’s become standard practice for companies to release two models of everything: a standard model for the regular golfers and a Tour or Pro model for the better players.  Tour Edge Exotics already had that with their E8 and E8 Beta fairway woods, but they’ve gone a step further in releasing the new E8 Tour.  The E8 Tour is an adjustable fairway wood with a traditional 150 cc head designed for the strongest fairway wood players.

Tour Edge Exotics E8 Tour_0167

At 150 cc, the Tour Edge Exotics E8 Tour is one of the smallest fairway woods on the market.  Its matte black crown is free of any alignment aids, and the slight pear-shape will be really attractive to better players.  It’s also worth noting that it sits dead square at 14°.  If you want to get it to it’s maximum loft of 15.5°, it will be just a touch closed.

Sound & Feel

I found the sound of the E8 Tour a little bit surprising given its look.  It’s a bit louder and more “modern” sounding than I expected.  Pure, centered impacts are rewarded with a driver-ish crack , not the little “tink” you might expect.

While there isn’t a ton of room to miss on this face, the feedback is good – thin or toe/heel misses are immediately evident based on sound and feel.

Performance

I was first able to test the E8 Tour at Tour Edge’s event in Florida during the week of the PGA Show.  On the long drive hole – which mandated hitting a 3W – a Tour Edge employee gave us a suggestion/warning, “You may not want to hit that new E8 Tour…it’s tough.”  Naturally, we ignored him and fired off a handful of knee-high lasers.

As you can see in the data above, the E8 Tour is very low-launching and low-spinning .  For me, this wasn’t the best combination – my spin is already low and I tend to launch my fairway woods too low.  For some players, however, the low launch and low spin – plus driver-like ball speed – will unlock loads of extra distance.

While the low launch and “Tour” moniker may have you thinking otherwise, I found that this club was  surprisingly forgiving and easy to hit straight .  The ball speed only dipped noticeably on my worst swings, and all my shots stayed within shouting distance of the center line.  I think part of the accuracy equation is the excellent stock shaft – Mitsubishi’s Diamana S+.

For players looking for a traditional appearance at address, or those who crave adjustability, the Tour Edge E8 Tour fairway wood is a great fit.  If you’re a player who needs more help elevating your fairway woods, don’t overlook the E8 and E8 Beta .

Exotics goes adjustable with E8 Tour fairway woods

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

Tour Edge Exotics’ new E8 Tour fairway woods are different than the company’s two other 2015 fairway woods in two ways:

  • They’re adjustable.
  • They’re little smaller.

Exotics’ E8 (185cc) and E8 Beta (175cc) fairway woods are more forgiving than the E8 Tour, which stands a mere 150cc. The smaller size of the E8 Tour, however, gives it an edge with better players looking for a more penetrating ball flight, workability and versatility.

Unlike the other two options, the E8 Tour has an adjustable hosel that allows players to dial in launch conditions with an adjustable hosel that ranges from 12-to-15.5 degrees. It also has three upright settings at 13, 14 and 15 degrees.

43e3da8d1d9c3705d0d524959ec4d7da

Swing weight can be adjusted by changing the stock 9-gram sole weight for a 6-, 11- or 14-gram weight with the additional purchase of a weight kit ($49.99) or individual weights ($19.99 apiece).

The E8 Tour has a forward center of gravity (CG) for lower-spinning shots that can increase carry distance for certain players. To achieve the more forward CG, Tour Edge moved the Power Cell, the company’s accordion-like structure near the face, even closer to the face, which produces the lower-spinning ball flight.

31a773991088176cb113e4d57b1fb8ea

The E8 is also designed with a 475 Carpenter Steel cup face that’s micro-bonded to the body using a 360-degree laser process, making it the most premium and consistent fairway wood offering in the E8 line.

The zero-tolerance manufacturing process on the club head is matched with premium stock shaft offerings that include Mitsubishi Rayon’s Diamana M+ and S+ shafts (the D+ is a custom option).

The E8 Tour will be in stores this spring and sell for $349.99.

I’m not paying over $300 for a non-titanium golf club, especially a fairway wood. The older Exotics fairways were great, I still have a XCG-V I game sometimes.

Did Rory McIlroy inspire Shane Lowry’s putter switch?

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report.  Head over there for the full article.

The timing of Lowry’s putter changeup was curious: Was he just using a Spider putter because he was paired with McIlroy, who’s been using a Spider Tour X head throughout 2024? Was Lowry just being festive because it’s the Zurich Classic, and he wanted to match his teammate? Did McIlroy let Lowry try his putter, and he liked it so much he actually switched into it?

Well, as it turns out, McIlroy’s only influence was inspiring Lowry to make more putts.

When asked if McIlroy had an influence on the putter switch, Lowry had this to say: “No, it’s actually a different putter than what he uses. Maybe there was more pressure there because I needed to hole some more putts if we wanted to win,” he said with a laugh.

To Lowry’s point, McIlroy plays the Tour X model, whereas Lowry switched into the Tour Z model, which has a sleeker shape in comparison, and the two sole weights of the club are more towards the face.

Lowry’s Spider Tour Z has a white True Path Alignment channel on the crown of his putter, which is reminiscent of Lowry’s former 2-ball designs, thus helping to provide a comfort factor despite the departure from his norm. Instead of a double-bend hosel, which Lowry used in his 2-ball putters, his new Spider Tour Z is designed with a short slant neck.

“I’ve been struggling on the greens, and I just needed something with a fresh look,” Lowry told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. “It has a different neck on it, as well, so it moves a bit differently, but it’s similar. It has a white line on the back of it [like my 2-ball], and it’s a mallet style. So it’s not too drastic of a change.

“I just picked it up on the putting green and I liked the look of it, so I was like, ‘Let’s give it a go.’”

Webb Simpson equipment Q&A: Titleist’s new 2-wood, 680 blade irons, and switching to a broomstick Jailbird

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

With seven career wins on the PGA Tour, including a U.S. Open victory, Webb Simpson is a certified veteran on the course. But he’s also a certified veteran in the equipment world, too. He’s a gearhead who truly knows his stuff, and he’s even worked closely with Titleist on making his own custom 682.WS irons.

On Wednesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, I caught up with Simpson to hear about his experience with Titleist’s new prototype 2-wood, how Titleist’s 680 Forged irons from 2003 ended up back in his bag, and why he’s switching into an Odyssey Ai-One Jailbird Cruiser broomstick putter this week for the first time.

Click here to read our full story about Simpson’s putter switch on PGATOUR.com’s Equipment Report, or continue reading below for my full Q&A with Simpson at Quail Hollow Club on Wednesday.

See Webb Simpson’s full WITB from the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship here

GolfWRX: It seems like you’ve been a little all over the place with your irons in the past six months or so, and now going back to the 680’s. Is that just a comfort thing? What’s been going on with the irons?

Webb Simpson: Titleist has been so great at working with me, and R&D, on trying to get an iron that kind of modernizes the 680. And so the 682.WS took the T100 grooves, but kinda took the look and the bulk and the build of the 680’s into one club. They’re beautiful, and awesome looking. I just never hit them that well for a consistent period of time. It was probably me, but then I went to T100’s and loved them. I loved the spin, the trajectory, the yardage, but again, I never went on good runs. Going through the ground, I couldn’t feel the club as well as with the blade. So last week, I’m like, ‘Alright. I’m gonna go back more for…comfort, and see if I can get on a nice little run of ball striking.’

So that’s why I went back.

OK, that makes sense. I know you had done some 2-wood testing recently. Is that in the bag right now?

It’s like day-by-day. I used it at Hilton Head every day. Valero, I used it one round. And this week, me and my caddie will do the book every morning, and if it’s a day where we think we need it, we’ll just put it in and take the 3-wood out. I love it because it’s a super simple swap. Like, it doesn’t really change much.

Yeah, can you tell me about that club? I mean, we don’t really know anything about it yet. You know? I haven’t hit it or anything, obviously.

It has grooves like a 3-wood. Spin is perfect. And it’s honestly, like, everything is in the middle of a 3-wood and driver number. Trajectory, spin, carry, all of it. So, a Hilton Head golf course is almost too easy to talk about because, you know, there, so many holes are driver 3-wood.

Valero, our thinking was we had two par-5’s into the wind, and we knew that it would take two great shots to get there in two. So instead of hitting driver-driver, we just put it in. And I used it on those holes.

Hilton was a little easier because it was off-the-tee kind of questions. But Colonial will be a golf course where, you know, there’s a lot of driver or 3-woods. It’s kind of like a backup putter or driver for me now. I’ll bring it to every tournament.

So it’s, like, in your locker right now, probably?

Well, it would be. It’s in my house [because Webb lives near by Quail Hollow Club, and is a member at the course.] It’s in the garage.

Oh, yeah, that’s right. Do you know what holes you might use it out here if it goes in play?

Potentially 15, depending on the wind. Second shot on 10. Could be 14 off the tee. The chances here are pretty low (that he’ll use the 2-wood). But, like, Greensboro would be an awesome club all day. I’m trying to think of any other golf courses.

There’s plenty that it’ll be a nice weapon to have.

It’s interesting, the wave of 2-woods and mini drivers. Like, it’s just really taken off on Tour, and all the companies have seemed to embrace it.

Yeah. The thing I had to learn, it took me, like, at least a week to learn about it is you gotta tee it up lower than you think. I kept teeing it up too high. You need it low, like barely higher than a 3-wood. And that was where I got optimal spin and carry. If you tee it up too high, you just don’t get as much spin and lose distance, I don’t know if that’s just a mini driver thing.

And you obviously have a Jailbird putter this week. What spurred that on?

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

Inconsistent putting. I’m stubborn in a lot of ways when it comes to my equipment, but I have to be open minded – I just hadn’t putted consistently well in a while. And I’m like, ‘Man, I feel my ball-striking coming along. Like I feel better; for real, better.’

If I can just get something in my hands that I’m consistent with. Being on Tour, you see it every year, guys get on little runs. I can put together four to five tournaments where I’m all the sudden back in the majors, or in the FedExCup Playoffs. You can turn things around quick out here. I’m like, ‘Man, whatever’s going to get me there, great.’

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

My caddie, David Cook, caddied for Akshay at the Houston Open and he putted beautifully. Then, I watched Akshay on TV at Valero, and he putted beautifully. And, I’m like, ‘I’m just going to try it.’

I’ve never tried it for more than a putt or two, and I just ordered what Akshay uses. It was pretty awkward at first, but the more I used it, the more I’m like, ‘Man, it’s pretty easy.’ And a buddy of mine who’s a rep out here, John Tyler Griffin, he helped me with some setup stuff. And he said at Hilton Head, he wasn’t putting well, then tried it, and now he makes everything. He was very confident. So I’m like, ‘Alright, I’ll try it.’”

And you’re going with it this week?

Hundred percent.

Alright, I love it. Thank you, I always love talking gear with you. Play well this week.

Thanks, man.

Tour Edge adds E8 fairway woods to its Exotics line

The company continued using that method with its E8 line of fairway woods ($250), which features a 475 Carpenter steel face and hyper-steel body. The clubhead (shown) boasts a shallower face height with a slightly lower center of gravity than recent Tour Edge models to help foster more launch off the turf. The company's E8 Beta model ($300) has a more compact head shape that incorporates a beta-titanium cup face and a deeper face height, along with a higher, more forward CG, to produce a lower ball flight with less spin.

Both models have a "Power Grid" channel along the sole (designed to increase ball speed) that has been re-engineered to reach out more to the heel and toe areas. Meanwhile, cutaway steps in the rear heel and toe areas of the sole reduce turf drag. The sole houses a 9-gram weight that can be replaced by a 6-, 11- or 14-gram weight to adjust swingweight. The extra weights cost $20 each or all three for $50.

Review: Tour Edge Exotics E8 Tour 3-wood

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

The Tour Edge Exotic E8 Tour certainly has a hot face, but the compact body also creates lower spin and great solid sound.  They moved the sole weighting lower and closer to the face because the head is so compact the CG creates low spin numbers as well as a lower launch angle.  While sometimes small 3-wood heads don’t have the same “pop” feel of larger heads, this one still have a really lively feel coming off the face. The head is paired with an excellent stock shaft.  The Diamana +B is the newest version of the tried and true Diamana Blue shaft.  It is a smooth mid-launching shaft that is so stable.  They also offer the other versions of the Diamana + series if you want different launch parameters.  The one I have also came with the new MCC +4 grips which is basically a grip with extra wraps under the right hand built into it.  I really found I love the feel and function of this grip.

tour edge exotics e8 fairway wood

So lots of paper talk, but what about on the course? The first hole I pulled this club out was at the Tour Edge Media event in FL. It happened to be on the long drive hole with Marice Allen and he said, it isn’t the easiest club to hit for amateurs. So guess, what I proceeded to do? Yep, topped it right into the lake. Not the way you want to hit a brand new club. But I didn’t give up, I went back to it a couple holes later and this time ripped it big-time down the middle of the fairway. I also had a couple more chances to bomb it from the fairway that day and reached a couple of the par 5s in two with it. Later on in FL I had great control with it, and really long distance. What also is important to me is simply how it looks behind the ball and this compact head really works for me. Even though it is adjustable, I stuck with the stock setting keeping it square and at 14* loft which I was happy with. It does have a wide range of adjustments depending on your needs.

I played the Tour Edge Exotics CB Pro Limited Edition 3-wood for much of 2014.  The Tour Edge Exotics E8 Tour is a very different club, but is looking to earn a spot in the bag.  I’m really liking what I’ve seen so far in 2015 from it.  The smaller head along with a different feel off the face has me leaning toward the E8 Tour.  If you don’t think you have the game for this smaller head, lower launching and lower spinning 3-wood, their other versions would be great choices.  But for the better 3-wood player, this is an excellent choice that fills a niche in the 3-wood market. Tour Edge Exotics EXS Fairway Wood Review

Tour edge exotics exs fairway wood.

The Tour Edge Exotics EXS fairway woods burst on the scene last year, then dramatically burst into my my golf bag this year.  The EXS line could quite possibly be the best value, and best performing, metal woods in the industry.  Tour Edge offers an incredible amount of players an all around high performing line of woods at a price that’s hard to believe.  They say that “pound for pound, nothing else comes close” – let’s see why.

Exoitcs EXS Fairway 3

The fairway wood might be the hardest club to truly make a “match” with.  On most days a player is using their fairway woods to be more reliable and nearly as long as their driver, drop high trajectory bombs onto par fives, and…chip out from trees sometimes.  Basically, you need it to look great, and feel great in your hands.  If you’ve read anything I’ve written on DRH, you know I’m all about the initial visual of my golfing clubs.  Well, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS fairway woods are as appealing as a sleek black BMW to me .

The EXS fairways are a sharp glossy black with classy blue accents.  My favorite “look” of the EXS line, and maybe Tour Edge’s most distinctive visual, is the wave like Slipstream sole.  While it looks cool, it helps with aerodynamics and turf interaction too.  The club head itself has a classic roundish look to it.  It’s really just right for my eyes.  The face is the perfect depth too. This all goes with the Tour Edge theme of being appealing to a wide range of players!

Exoitcs EXS Fairway 2

How Does  it F eel?

The Tour Edge Exotics EXS fairway wood has a very deep, strong feel to it.  It has a number of materials in its construction from carbon fiber to steel so it’s pretty distinctively modern.  The Variable Face Thickness gives you some added forgiveness all across the face.   I find it really pleasing.  When you hit it poorly, you have the right feedback to know where you made contact.  When you hit one in the center, you’re rewarded with that feeling that keeps you coming back every weekend.  You know the one.  It’s pure.

Exotics EXS Fairway 11

How Does it Sound?

Ting!  Crack!  Thwack!  Thump! “ Carbon Fiber Sound! ”

Well, those are just about the only five sounds you’ll need to describe a modern metal wood.  The Tour Edge Exotics EXS line sounds like a nice “ting” when you pure one.  I’m not one to base a lot of my opinion on a club off of sound, but these clubs are nice and pleasant.  No distractions and that satisfying “ting” is strong but reserved.

Exotics EXS Fairway 1

On-Course Performance

I’ve had my current three wood for about three full seasons.  It’s long enough, versatile, and frankly, nothing’s been better.  We might have some competition with the Tour Edge Exotics EXS fairway woods.   There’s really nothing this club doesn’t excel in.

Off the tee and from the turf, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 3 wood has been a reliable performer.  It gives me a touch more distance than my gamer, it’s super easy to hit, and I’m able to shape the shots I want (I try to hit mid-level push fades if I can).  If you like to keep it simple, you’re going to like this club.  If you don’t, you’re still going to like it.  We had some of the other Heroes give it a few whacks, and they were able to hit their high power draws on command.  If you need a few more adjustments, you get that too!  You can use the EXS’s interchangeable weights of the flight tuning system and further customize ball flight.  Versatility is the name of the game here.

One thing I may recommend is to think about moving up in flex with the Tensei Blue shafts.  My driver swing speed is usually 103-108 mph, and I’m a borderline Stiff/X-Stiff flex.  I went up to X-Stiff in an effort to take the left side out of play and I feel this has been a smart move.  The Tensei Blue is a GREAT performer, even though my spin numbers are a touch high.  On the course though, it does what I ask/need it to do.

Exotics EXS Fairway 16

Final Thoughts

Tour Edge’s Exotics EXS line of fairway woods offer confidence-inspiring good looks, a hot and forgiving club face, and the right amount of options to fit players of all levels.  When you realize you can purchase EXS fairway wood new for under $180, it’s hard not to want to try to fill the notoriously difficult fairway wood slot in your bag with one of these woods!

Hey Jon, how does the club face sit at address? It appears a bit closed in the pics, but that might be just the angle of the photo. Also, sometimes these clubs that “appeal to everyone” tend to add little “forgiveness” bits like a closed face or a bit of offset so less skilled players can play them. Thanks for the write-up.

Hey Sean, thanks for the comment. It sits square to my eye. Tour Edge calls it square as well. Totally agree that some manufacturers add a little closed face to make it easier to square up. I feel like Tour Edge kept it neutral and maxed out the face forgiveness as the biggest benefit to the higher ‘caps.

Is this good for a 20 handicapper

Yeah, for sure. The EXS line is geared toward a pretty wide range of player. The face is deep and pretty hot all over. Make sure you get matched with the stock shaft though!

Hey Jon, have you hit the original ex’s and compared it to the EXS 220

WOODWORKER SESSIONS

Here we hope to discover more about what makes our woodworkers tick

“ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW!” We stopped for our first time today , it’s just a couple miles off the route we take from Northern NY State to Maine . All I can say is Wow !! The variety, quantity and quality is the best I’ve ever seen. Our car was loaded with vacation gear so I was limited on size and amount I could buy . I got a beautiful board of Birdseye maple and two 1.5 by 1.5 by 12 inch staves of olive wood . I’ll surely make a point of stopping every time I’m through the area in the future .

  1. Tour Edge E8 Tour Fairway Wood Review

The E8 Tour is an adjustable fairway wood with a traditional 150 cc head designed for the strongest fairway wood players. Looks. At 150 cc, the Tour Edge Exotics E8 Tour is one of the smallest fairway woods on the market. Its matte black crown is free of any alignment aids, and the slight pear-shape will be really attractive to better players.

  7. Exotics goes adjustable with E8 Tour fairway woods

Exotics' E8 (185cc) and E8 Beta (175cc) fairway woods are more forgiving than the E8 Tour, which stands a mere 150cc. The smaller size of the E8 Tour, however, gives it an edge with better players looking for a more penetrating ball flight, workability and versatility.
