How To Spend a Day on the Champs-Élysées, Paris

The Alexander III Bridge in Paris spans the Seine

The 8th arrondissement is one of the most famous districts of Paris, but there’s so much more to the area than designer stores and the Arc de Triomphe. From scientific museums to stunning nights of Parisian cabaret, see Culture Trip’s recommendations for how to spend a day on the Champs-Élysées.

1. bread & roses.

Cafe, French

People sit outside of Bread & Roses in Paris

Start your day with petit dejeuner (breakfast) at Bread & Roses. With a small but delicious breakfast menu, focused mainly on specialities from their boulangerie, it’s a perfect place to take in the famous cobblestone streets before the crowds of people take them over. The croissants and brioche are particular crowd-pleasers.

2. Le Café des Lettres

Cafe, Restaurant, French

See the best views of Paris at the Arc de Triomphe

If you want to see the Arc de Triomphe – it’s probably one of the main reasons you’re headed to the Champs-Élysées – head over when access opens to the public at 10am. For a small fee and the effort of climbing up 280 stairs, you’ll gaze upon one of the best panoramic views in Paris. If you’re not into heights, there’s still plenty to see at ground level. The four pillars depict some of France’s greatest military victories, and you’ll be able to see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lit by an eternal flame.

The Arc de Triomphe, Paris, offers some of the best of views of Paris

Indulge in some retail therapy

While there’s plenty of shopping to be done on the Champs-Élysées, the stores are less quirky Parisian boutiques and more huge versions of chain stores. However, there are some standouts: the massive flagship Sephora, the Guerlain store, which has been on the Champs-Élysées since 1914, and Ladurée for those with a sweet tooth – expect to wait in line though if you want to dine in the iconic mint-green restaurant. It’s also worth swinging past the Louis Vuitton store, which is listed as a historical monument – there’s always a fantastic window display (though, again, be prepared to wait in line if you actually want to enter the store).

Guerlain specialises in fragrance, skincare and make-up

Take in an exhibition

After lunch, take a break from shopping to give your wallet a little bit of relief and expand your senses by checking out a museum or two. Le Grand Palais and Le Petit Palais are both within walking distance, as is the Palais de la Découverte, a museum focused on science with interactive displays that are fun for all ages. In 2000, Le Grand Palais was designated a historic monument, and it hosts many exhibitions, including the Chanel fashion shows.

Le Grand Palais, Paris, hosts many exhibitions

5. Le Lido, Avenue des Champs-Élysées

6. le fouquet’s.

Fouquets restaurant, Paris

For a spectacular dinner sans showgirls, go for a decadent meal at Le Fouquet’s. A real Paris institution, the brasserie, founded in 1889, hosts dinner for the Cesar Awards every year. Though the menu is on the pricier side, the restaurant is known for serving delicious food like Fouquet’s devilled eggs, served with avocado and tuna. However, make sure you book well in advance!

7. Doobie’s

If you’re searching for an affordable meal on the Champs-Élysées, swing by Doobie’s, which serves a small menu of Parisian staples like beef carpaccio and magret de canard. The restaurant turns into a cosy late-night hang-out spot at midnight when a DJ takes to the decks.

8. The Freedom Pub

Pub, British

The Freedom Pub may not be as upscale as some of the other bars on the Champs-Élysées, but it should be your go-to place if you’re after a fun, unpretentious night out. The English-style pub is an ideal spot to visit with a group of friends for a couple of beers. Serving up traditional pub food, it offers a selection of burgers and beers from different parts of the world.

Discovery of the Champs-Élysées: A Must-Visit in the Heart of Paris.

The champs-élysées unveiled: journey to the heart of paris' iconic avenue.

The Champs-Élysées, the most beautiful avenue in the world

Located in the heart of Paris, the Avenue des Champs-Élysées is considered the most beautiful avenue in the world. It stretches for almost two kilometers, connecting the Louvre, the Pyramide and the Carrousel du Louvre, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Place de la Concorde, and the Arc de Triomphe. It is part of the French capital's historic axis. Lined with luxury boutiques, restaurants, theatres, and cinemas, the avenue attracts millions of visitors from all over the world every year.

An exceptional promenade for pedestrians

The Champs-Elysées are reserved for pedestrians one Sunday a month giving you the chance to discover this iconic avenue in a different way. A car-free stroll allows you to fully enjoy the beauty of the area and take souvenir photos in front of the Arc de Triomphe without being bothered by traffic.

Even when the avenue is open to traffic, the pavements are wide enough to accommodate thousands of visitors. Therefore, all year round, you can walk along the avenue, enjoying its gardens, shops, restaurants, and museums.

In December, the magnificent Christmas market takes place here. There are plenty of activities for young and old alike: ice skating, puppet shows, … not to mention the spectacular Christmas lights in the trees. The very chic adjacent Avenue Montaigne is also decorated for Christmas, with a suitable refinement.

Significant events on the Champs-Élysées

The Avenue des Champs-Élysées regularly plays host to national and international events.

Every year on the of 14th July, the French National Day, the famous military parade takes place here. Since 1920, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has stood at the top of the avenue, beneath the Arc de Triomphe.

The Avenue des Champs-Elysées is the site of all the major popular gatherings. At the end of the Second World War, General de Gaulle and the Allied troops entered Paris by descending the avenue.

After the victories of the French national football team in the 1998 and 2018 World Cups, millions of French people gathered in the Champs-Élysées to celebrate their team's victory!

At the end of July, it hosts the Finish Line of the Tour de France, also known as the "Grande Boucle". The Tour de France is the most prestigious cycle race in the world and one of the most watched sporting events on the planet (after the football World Cup and the Olympic Games). The final stage is traditionally held in Paris, with the spectacular final sprint taking place on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

In July and August 2024, the Champs-Élysées will be one of the central points of the Paris Olympic Games. The Place de la Concorde will be the site for breaking, 3X3 basketball, BMX and skateboarding, while the Grand Palais will host the taekwondo and fencing events. Not far away, on the Esplanade des Invalides, the archery competitions will see the world's best archers competing against each other.

Must-sees in the surrounding area

Extend your experience in the heart of chic Paris! Starting from the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, there are some wonderful day trips to be made, either on your own or as part of a guided tour. Several circuits and activities are possible between the Seine, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Place de la Concorde, for instance:

  • • L’Avenue Montaigne: Perpendicular to the Champs-Elysées, this is known as the avenue of luxury. It was here that Christian Dior opened his first boutique and held his first fashion shows, marking the birth of the New Look. The success was immediate, and other luxury brands joined him on the Avenue Montaigne. Today, the Dior boutique covers 1,200 m2 and includes a museum. The haute-couture workshops are still located on the upper floors of the shop. Dior chose this location strategically, just a few steps away from the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, one of the most famous palaces in the French capital, to attract an international and particularly wealthy clientele. The palace was created in 1913, the same year as its neighbour, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
  • L’Hôtel des Invalides: As its name suggests, this was a military hospital built in the late 17th century under Louis XIV. Today, this monumental architectural complex houses not only the hospital but also the Musée de l'Armée and military offices. Under the gold-leafed dome of its church, you can pay your respects to Napoleon I (Bonaparte) in his tomb.
  • La Place du Trocadéro: Located on the heights of the Chaillot Hill, the square was redesigned when the Palais de Chaillot was built for the 1937 Universal Exhibition (World Fair) in Paris. The square is home to numerous restaurants and cafés from where you can admire the eternal elegance of the Eiffel Tower, known as la Dame de Fer (the Iron Lady).
  • L’Avenue du Président Wilson: With its many museums, it is a cultural hub. The Palais de Tokyo, a contemporary art centre (probably the most interesting in Paris) and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris were built for the 1937 Universal Exhibition. Although very interesting, the Musée d'Art Moderne is not as busy as the major museums in Paris, making it easier to obtain tickets, especially because admission to the permanent collections is free. The Palais Galliera, now a fashion museum, was built by the Eiffel workshops (at the same time as the Tower!) and has had a unique history. The Musée Guimet, located at the end of the avenue, houses a collection of Asian art.

Champs-Élysées

The Champs-Élysées is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) long and is the most beautiful and well-known avenue in Paris . It connects Arc de Triomphe with the Place de la Concorde and is considered one of the world’s most famous commercial streets.

The origins of the Champs-Élysées can be traced to 1640 when space was cleared to plant a line of trees, which would later become an avenue. The name translates to “Elysian Fields” from the Greek mythology, meaning resting place of Greek gods and dead heroes, similar to the Christian paradise.

In 1724, the avenue was extended and acquired its current size and in 1994 the city renovated the street’s sidewalks, improving the Champs-Élysées considerably. Nowadays, its buildings are high-end stores, cafés and offices , ideal for shopping or going for a stroll down one of the most beautiful avenues of the city.

The Champs-Élysées is also renowned worldwide, especially among sports fans, as it is the site of the Tour de France’s last stage.

A walk down the Champs-Élysées

The avenue is divided in two. The lower part, closest to the Place de la Concorde, runs through a park with  imposing buildings such as the Palais de la Découverte (Discovery Palace), the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais.

The higher part of Champs-Élysées begins at place Charles de Gaulle, where the magnificent Arc de Triomphe is situated, with numerous high-end stores , restaurants , cinemas and large department stores .

The Champs-Élysées ends at the opposite side of the Arc de Triomphe , where the avenue de la Grande Armée leads to the Grande Arche de la Défense and the district of La Défense .

From the Grande Arche, visitors have an amazing view of Champs-Élysées.

Champs-Elysées

Champs-Élysées at Night

The Avenue des Champs-Elysées

Take a walk along the world’s most famous avenue.

A short walk along the Champs-Elysées shows you exactly why it is referred to as “the most beautiful avenue in the world”. Yet, even though the avenue is famed for its attractiveness, there’s far more to do than simply marvel at the sights. The Champs-Elysées is the place to go in Paris if you’re looking for unrivalled shopping, culinary delights and a range of cultural things to see and do.

Sights on the Champs-Elysées

The Champs-Elysées runs from the Place de la Concorde to the Place Charles de Gaulle, with 1.2 miles of discovery awaiting you in between; but it is at either end of the avenue where you will find its most prominent landmarks. Place Charles de Gaulle is where Paris’ second most iconic feature (after the Eiffel Tower) resides; the Arc de Triomphe. Though the exterior of the Arc warrants closer examination with its domineering arches, and intricate carvings depicting scenes of Napoleon’s famous victories.

A trip up the monument’s 284 stairs is a must, as it reveals an excellent panorama of the city and delivers the best views of the Eiffel Tower, especially at night when the 324m iron structure is illuminated. Also located at the top of the 50m tall structure is its museum; which divulges the rich history of the monument – beginning with Napoleon Bonaparte, for whom the Arc was commissioned in 1806 to honour those who fought in the Napoleonic Wars.

The structure was eventually completed in 1836, 15 years after the great Emperor’s death. He would however make the spiritual journey down the length of the Champs-Elysées during his state funeral, after his remains were returned to France in 1840. At the other end of the Champs-Elysées lies the Place de la Concorde, recognisable today by the many statues and fountains that adorn the square. Remembered as the focal point of the French Revolution, it was here where many nobles lost their head to Madame Guillotine, its most notable victims being King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. One of the square’s most recognisable features is the Luxor Obelisk; the 23m tall column that serves as an impressive centrepiece. The 3,300 year old yellow granite structure arrived in France in 1832, after making the 3 year trip from Egypt (quite the feat considering it weighs 250 tonnes) and famously wears a gold-leafed pyramid cap on its peak.

What to Do on the Champs-Elysées

The Champs-Elysées is home to a number of luxury brands, with the likes of Chanel, Lacoste, Cartier and Hugo Boss delivering your fix of Parisian opulence; but in recent years the street has broadened its appeal with the introduction of high-street names. Adidas, Levi’s, Abercrombie & Fitch, Zara, the Disney Store and Banana Republic are a few of the many retailers who have set up shop on the avenue; and the majority offer unique shopping experiences such as innovative art installations displayed in Levi’s, and free personalised shopping at Banana Republic.

Avenue Montaigne, which runs parallel to the Champs-Elysées, is the place to go if you’re looking for the definitive Parisian luxury shopping experience. Its surplus of shops specialise in haute couture and ready-to-wear fashion; boasting the likes of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana on its extensive list of high-end fashion-houses. Once you’ve shopped until you’ve probably quite literally dropped, the avenue is also home to some of the finest restaurants in the city, making replenishment a gastronomic delight. Notable establishments include Pavillon Élysée Lenôtre, which has been serving its famous desserts since 1900. Located in the gardens by the Rond-Point end of the avenue; the restaurant is particularly amiable in the summer when you can dine on its terrace. For Michelin star dining on the Champs-Elysées, Three star Ledoyen is located next to the Petit Palais and is overseen by master of French cuisine, Yannick Alléno. Though the Champs-Elysées is not famed for its cheap cuisine, should you be looking for more affordable replenishment, there is also no shortage of traditional French cafes and bistros offering inexpensive local delicacies. The Champs-Elysées, on top of its shopping and fine-dining is also one of Paris’ cultural hotbeds. Various museums, including the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais, the Palais de la Decouverte and the Espace Culterel Louis Vuitton all frequent the avenue, allowing you the opportunity to lose yourself in Paris’ affluent history; and for a more contemporary fix, head to one of the many cinemas, theatres or nightclubs that also make their home on the Champs-Elysées.

An Avenue for all Seasons

If you’re wondering what time of year is best to visit the Champs-Elysées, don’t. The real beauty of the avenue lies in its cooperation with all the seasons; each reflecting the avenue in an individual light. Spring heralds the return of life to the Champs-Elysées, bringing colour to the numbering trees and gardens; making for a wonderful time to enjoy walks along the avenue, when there are less tourists about. Summer sees a huge influx of visitors to the avenue, and claiming a chair in one of the many cafes is a competitive business; but nonetheless, Paris in the summer is a joy to behold, and the Champs-Elysées is undoubtedly one of the best spots in the city to soak up the sun. Summer also marks the return of the Tour de France, when the avenue every year becomes the concluding point of the race; which is signalled by the thousands of Parisians and tourists who flock to the Champs-Elysées to see the famous yellow jersey cross the finish line. Autumn, like spring is a pleasant time to enjoy walks along the avenue when there are fewer tourists about. The month is also when France’s Armistice Day remembrance ceremonies take place by the Arc de Triomphe; which is attended every year by the French President. Winter brings an otherworldly transformation to the Champs-Elysées, when every year the avenue is illuminated with Christmas lights from around mid-November. The return of winter also sees the avenue take on a new role as home to its revered Christmas Market, offering stalls packed with handcrafted goods and seasonal delicacies. Visitors can also expect ice-skating and the world’s largest Ferris wheel, both of which are located on Place de la Concorde.

Inside China’s eerie ‘ghost town’ replica of PARIS complete with 300ft fake Effiel Tower & clone of Champs Elysées

  • Aiya Zhussupova , Foreign News Reporter

  • Published : Invalid Date,

A BIZARRE replica of Paris complete with a fake Eiffel Tower lies nearly abandoned in China.

Tianducheng, in Hangzhou, could be easily confused for the French capital at first glance with the architecture oozing Parisian chic.

The copy of the Eiffel Tower is only a third of the original's height

But void of bustling atmosphere and tourists, it is quickly exposed as a copycat city.

The rusting statues, overgrown weeds on the skirt of the Eiffel Tower and industrial buildings with plumes of smoke in the background ruin the romantic illusion of Paris.

For years, the gaudy mimic was all but a ghost town, with just 2,000 residents calling it their home.

The massive £1billion development opened in 2007 but failed to attract enough people to fill its 10,000 capacity.

Its knock-off Eiffel Tower is only a third of the French original's height, standing just 300ft tall.

The imitation of Champs-Elysees Avenue is eerily quiet compared to the real one.

Although Haussmann-style houses line the streets of the rip-off "Paris of the East", inside they remain empty.

Tianducheng was even given its own Palace of Versailles gardens with geometric landscaping and fountains which are now bone dry.

But the reason nobody fell head over heels for the mock City of Lights was partly due to its remote location.

Tianducheng is surrounded by hectares of farmland and is engulfed in thick smog from the nearby industrial cites.

Only tourists and newly married couples in search of a picture-perfect backdrop embarked on an hour-long journey from the province's capital.

But by 2017, the situation slightly improved and the clone of Paris would house 30,000 residents.

As more people moved in, Beijing pumped in more money into the city, opening a metro station to connect it to Hangzhou.

But despite the efforts to boost the population, the city still gives off an eerie feel.

Jarryd Salem, who previously visited the city, told News.com.au: "The atmosphere has become stranger and more complex.

"Tianducheng is an urban development that has failed spectacularly."

China has built several "duplitecture" cities in a bid to combat the anticipated population crisis in the country of 1.5 billion.

However, the government policy of constructing housing without any guaranteed occupants backfired as more cities turned into ghost towns.

Rachel Ni, who moved to Tianducheng six years ago, told ABC News: "I think it's a little strange.

"I live here because it's cheap. In Hangzhou, this is very, very cheap."

It is only one of many strange "fake" landmarks constructed by China during its infatuation with "duplitecture".

Sprawling across 3700 acres on the side of the Cangshan mountain range, the popular resort - dubbed "fake Santorini" - has copied the island's iconic whitewashed cobblestone alleyways and blue windows.
