The World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Posts within the UN Tourism are filled following a careful competitive selection process that takes into account the candidates’ academic qualifications, international experience and language skills, among others.

• Internship Opportunities

Officials on Loan

Junior professional officer (jpo) programme at un tourism, competencies, values, diversity and inclusion.

We endeavor to achieve personal and professional growth for our personnel.

Remuneration : we offer an attractive and competitive remuneration package.

Onboarding : we facilitate your arrival at UN Tourism by offering valuable information on the conditions of service and your arrival at the UN Tourism Secretariat. Newly appointed members of personnel will undergo an induction training to assist them to settle down quickly in the new work environment.

Global health care : we offer a comprehensive medical insurance coverage, covering medical and dental expenditures globally for our staff members and service contract holders.

Holidays : we offer up to 30 days of annual leave per year, giving our personnel the work-life balance that is needed to recharge.

Pension : staff members of the Organization participate in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund while service contract holders are covered by specific provisions for their pension contributions. 

Tax-free salaries in Spain : salaries of staff members are normally exempt from national income taxes in Spain.

UN Tourism is headquarted in one of the major tourism hubs in the world – Madrid, Spain. It is a forward-looking, modern city that embraces innovation and diversity. Moving to a new city, even to a new country, for a new job is exciting but it can also be challenging. As an international organization, UN Tourism is committed to looking after the needs of its personnel, not only in the workplace but also for assisting in the transfer to Madrid. To facilitate their relocation, new personnel will have access to a practical guide which includes basic information about Spain, accommodation, health care, public transportation, social activities, etc.

Interested applicants are requested to follow the specific instructions listed in each vacancy notice or call for expression of interest. 

UN Tourism will only accept applications received through our web-based system. Applications sent by other means (e.g. post, email, etc.) or received after the deadline indicated for each employment opportunities, will not be taken into consideration.

Only candidates short-listed will be contacted . Short-listed candidates may be requested to take a competitive exam and/or competency-based interview as part of the final phase of the selection process.

Please note that receipt of applications will not be acknowledged, and any further correspondence will be initiated by UN Tourism. Roster/open applications are retained by UN Tourism for a maximum period of two years from the date of receipt.

Internship opportunities

Join our team and make a difference.

To be eligible for the UN Tourism Internship Programme, candidates are required to be enrolled in a university programme or have recently completed one. Internship participants do not received a remuneration from UN Tourism but may be eligible for a monthly stipend of EUR 500 to cover transportation expenses. Interns must be in possession of an all-risk insurance, valid for the duration of the internship. When necessary, the Organization may provide visa assistance, however, Interns are responsible for all other aspects related to their stay at the duty station for the duration of their internship.

UN Tourism may at times consider accepting Interns, depending on the student's qualifications and the demands of the work programme of the Organization. As a general rule, roster internship applications are retained by UN Tourism for a maximum period of one year from date of receipt. Candidates wishing to be considered for inclusion in the roster of Interns should complete the application form below. 

UN Tourism will only accept applications received through our web-based system. Applications sent by other means (e.g. post, email, etc.) or received after the deadline indicated for each employment opportunities, will not be taken into consideration.

UN Tourism Member States may send tourism experts and officials through the capacity-building option of the Organization, on a non-reimbursable loan basis, to participate in the activities of the Organization for a set period of time. This arrangement is formally being done through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). 

The UN Tourism JPO Programme is a donor-funded programme that provides young professionals the opportunity to gain professional experience at UN Tourism. The UN Tourism JPO Programme is administered under an agreement established with UNDP in 2016.

Eight top skills for travel and tourism careers.

The skills needed for jobs in the travel industry can be developed anywhere, including closer to home. Discover what these are and why they are valued by employers.

Your days won’t follow a rigid structure and you won’t always be able to anticipate what happens next.

Many tourism roles are open to applicants who don’t have a degree as well as graduates from any degree discipline. So, your skills and attributes are more important than your academic qualifications when applying for tourism graduate jobs.

With that in mind, we’ve listed some of the skills that are applicable to most jobs in travel and tourism, along with reasons for why this is the case. It’s not an exhaustive list, and the skills will vary slightly for different roles, so take a look at our job descriptions if you have your sights set on a particular career path.

The good news is that you don’t need to work abroad to gain these skills, or even have work experience directly in the travel industry – though it won’t hurt your chances if you do. They’re all transferable, meaning they can be picked up from alternative work experience, extracurricular activities or other areas of your life. At the end of each skill description, click through to our more in-depth explanations of what each skill involves and ideas for how you can develop them.

1. Customer service

The tourism industry is all about giving people a great experience when they travel, from helping them book a holiday to greeting them at a resort or leading a sightseeing tour. So, it’s no surprise that good customer service is vital.

You’ll need to make sure each customer feels valued while resolving any issues as efficiently as possible so you can go on to serve others. Working in the travel and tourism industry can sometimes mean dealing with people who are angry, anxious or upset when things go wrong, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of helping to make some of their most memorable moments.

2. Communication

Getting a message across clearly and checking that the other person has understood you is an essential part of most travel and tourism jobs. You could be providing directions at an information desk, telling interesting stories about the history of a region, giving a health and safety briefing or contacting air traffic control. You’ll need to adapt your approach depending on your role and the situation at hand and be ready to answer unexpected questions.

Clear, concise written communication might not come to mind when considering travel and tourism jobs but it is essential in some roles: for example, airline cabin crew are required to write a flight report after each journey.

3. Adaptability and flexibility

Travel is by nature an area where there’s a lot of potential for last-minute changes. Flights can be cancelled, natural disasters can jeopardise plans – and in 2020–21 the tourism industry has seen more uncertainty than ever with travel restrictions and quarantine requirements in a state of constant change. As a graduate working in travel, your days won’t follow a rigid structure and you won’t always be able to anticipate what happens next. Accordingly, you’ll need to remain calm in emergencies, deal with difficult customers and respond to spur-of-the-moment requests. It’s likely you’ll also experience unpredictable working patterns, unsociable hours and, in some roles, being away from home for months at a time. Building your adaptability will help you to embrace these challenges and enjoy a career that’s not nine-to-five.

4. Language skills and cultural sensitivity

Being bilingual isn’t essential for a career in travel and tourism, but it certainly helps. If you plan to work abroad, a good grasp of the local language will be beneficial even if you’re mainly working with tourists from English-speaking countries. Likewise, in the UK you could be working with people who are visiting from around the world and will appreciate it if you are able to speak their language.

However rusty or lacking your language skills are, being able to relate to people from different cultures and backgrounds is a must. You’re more likely than in many other sectors to be working with people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, so it’s important that you treat everyone with respect and help them feel comfortable. You may need to adapt your approach to prevent miscommunications, for example.

5. Business acumen and commercial awareness

Keeping customers happy is important, but you’ll also need to be aware of how your employer fits into the wider travel industry and what its competitors are doing differently. As well as following industry news, consider how developments in the wider world will affect travel. The coronavirus pandemic, Brexit and the climate crisis are all obvious examples that will have long-term impacts, but can you think of any more – and predict how employers might respond?

6. Leadership and responsibility

You’re unlikely to be leading a team of colleagues as a fresh graduate, but at any stage in your career or work experience you can take opportunities to make decisions, use your initiative and motivate other people in your team. Roles such as tour guide, activity instructor and cabin crew will involve taking on leadership of your customers by showing them where to go, what to do and how to do it safely.

7. Teamwork

Working efficiently as part of a group will keep things running smoothly for customers. Even if your role involves a lot of independent working, you’ll be representing your employer’s brand and be in regular contact with your colleagues and other travel industry professionals. Sometimes you’ll need to negotiate or reach compromises in order to do the best job possible as a team.

8. Enthusiasm and dedication

Alongside all of the above skills, make sure that your passion for travel and tourism shines through. Some roles might also require knowledge of key destinations or your local area, but this can generally be learned on the job and ultimately employers are looking for potential. A can-do attitude will encourage you to accept and overcome challenges and stay upbeat even when you’re exhausted from being on your feet all day. While working in travel and tourism is hard work (it isn’t just one long holiday!), it can be fun and exciting so don’t be afraid to express your enthusiasm in applications and interviews.

The complaints and comments swirling around ex-ABC News weatherman Rob Marciano ‘s alleged anger issues seem like a “hit job,” according to a person who regularly worked with the meteorologist.

Marciano was fired from the network , where he worked for nearly a decade, on Tuesday over “alleged “anger management issues,” sources previously told The Post.

But sources who worked with the meteorologist told People Thursday that his ousting was “unexpected” and had nothing bad to say about their former colleague.

“Rob is always positive, hands-on and never anything but professional,” one source told the outlet. “People enjoy working with him and he’s not difficult to work with.”

He added that many people at ABC feel it was “unbelievable he was let go,” contrary to earlier reports where sources described his chronic temper issues and complaints from female coworkers who reportedly said he made them uncomfortable.

“The Rob Marciano being portrayed is not the Rob Marciano we know,” the same source told People. “Rob has always been nothing but professional. He is truly invested in his segments, cares a tremendous amount about his final work product.”

Three other sources, all women, had similar things to say to the publication.

“Rob was always such a nice guy and I loved when he stopped by my edit room to check on his weather packages,” an unnamed editor said.

A former CNN colleague said her “heart hurts” seeing the negative coverage of the weatherman.

“Rob is great. No one championed my career in that building more than he did and no one took care of the crew in the field better than he did in my 10 years of working there,” she said. “I had plenty of really bad encounters at CNN and people who treated me terribly.”

The third source, another former coworker said Marciano was the “nicest, most professional and respectful person I’ve ever worked with.”

“He was hard-working and kind to everyone. So many people in news can be cut-throat, or creepy, or generally unpleasant, but Rob is not one of them,” she says. “He’s the definition of a standup guy.”

Others told of a very different experience working alongside the meteorologist.

Marciano reportedly had a long-running feud with chief “Good Morning America” meteorologist Ginger Zee and was banned from the GMA set before his ousting.

But the “last straw” that led to his ultimate dismissal  was a tirade that he unleashed  on one of the show’s producers and which was witnessed by several staffers,  according to the Daily Beast.

Sources said the weatherman let personal issues going on in his life — mainly his divorce — impact his behavior at work, showing up in a “cranky” mood or making female staffers uncomfortable by “oversharing” details about the divorce from ex-wife Eryn Marciano.

His behavior led his bosses to bar him from “GMA” studios in Times Square last year after colleagues complained to management,  Page Six reported .

He was then swapped to “World News Tonight,” while occasionally filing field reports for the morning show.

An ABC News spokesperson declined to comment. The Post has reached out to Marciano and Ginger Zee.

Welcome to the white-collar recession

The more you earn, the harder it is to find a job right now

Over the past year or so, pretty much everyone who's looked for a job has told me the same thing: The job market is brutal right now . They've applied to dozens if not hundreds of openings, only to get one or two callbacks. No one's hiring , they tell me. I've never seen it this bad.

Listening to them, you'd think we were in the middle of a recession. But the confusing thing is we're nowhere close to one. Unemployment is near a five-decade low. The economy is adding hundreds of thousands of jobs each month. Wages are growing faster than inflation. By all the standard measures, the job market is doing just fine. So why am I hearing such a different story from people on the ground?

The dissonance finally started to make sense to me when Vanguard, the investment-management company, released its latest report on hiring. By looking at the enrollment and contribution rates of its 401(k) retirement plans, Vanguard is able to calculate a national hiring rate broken down by income level. And what the numbers show is a two-tier job market — one divided between a blue-collar boom and a white-collar recession.

Among Vanguard's lowest earners — those who make less than $55,000 — the hiring rate has held up well. At 1.5%, it's still above pre-pandemic levels. But among those who make more than $96,000? It's pretty depressing. Hiring has slowed to a dismal 0.5%, less than half the peak it reached in mid-2022. Excluding the dip in the early months of the pandemic, that's the worst it's been since 2014. If you make a six-figure salary, it really is a bad time to be looking for a job.

The question here is why . Why are companies hiring so few white-collar workers right now? Several possible explanations come to mind. It might be that fewer people in corporate jobs are quitting right now, which would mean companies have fewer openings they need to fill. It might be that the industries that are struggling the most — tech and finance — are the ones that employ a lot of high-earning professionals. Or it might be that CEOs are making good on their threats to cut back on what they see as corporate bloat — what Mark Zuckerberg has called "managers managing managers, managing managers, managing managers, managing the people who are doing the work."

But there could be a bigger, more worrisome explanation for the downturn in white-collar hiring. Maybe companies are anticipating tough times ahead and trimming their budgets accordingly. "If you need to pull back on costs," says Fiona Greig, the global head of investor research and policy at Vanguard, "pulling back on expensive workers will reduce costs to a greater extent than pulling back on your lower-income workers." Translation: The more you earn when budgets are tight, the less an employer wants to hire you.

Now, you could argue that a slowdown in white-collar hiring doesn't really matter in the current economy, even for white-collar workers. Sure, Vanguard's data show that things are tough for professionals who are looking for a job. But there aren't that many people who actually need a new job right now: The unemployment rate for people with a college degree is 2.1%, and the national layoff rate is below what it was pre-pandemic. When the vast majority of professionals already have a job — and are able to keep their jobs — maybe it's OK that companies aren't hiring.

But that argument doesn't take into account one important factor: What if the job you have is one you hate? I have several friends who are unhappy in their current jobs, but they can't quit because no one is hiring. Some observers have called this combination of lower hiring and less quitting "the Big Stay," suggesting a kind of equilibrium after the chaos of the Great Resignation. But my colleague Emily Stewart has a better name for it: the "trapped in place" economy . I think professionals feel this trapped-in-placeness particularly acutely. After all, it wasn't that long ago that they were enjoying a "take this job and shove it" swagger, which was fun to watch. During the Great Resignation , they knew it'd be easy to find a new job, which meant it'd be easy to walk away from their current one. Even if they weren't planning to leave, the job market gave them a sense of freedom — the feeling that they no longer had to put up with a bad boss, or a brutal workload, or an arbitrary return-to-office mandate.

This, I think, is what explains what people are calling the " vibecession ": the weird state of feeling like we're in a recession even though all the standard metrics show we're not . What we're experiencing is actually a slowdown in white-collar hiring — and white-collar professionals (me and my angsty friends) are the people who shape the public discourse about the economy. "People feel that things are moving in the wrong direction," says Guy Berger, the director of economic research at the Burning Glass Institute, which analyzes the labor market.

And for the most elite professionals, things could get worse before they get better. Berger tells me he doesn't expect a full-on recession anytime soon . But he's keeping an eye on the unemployment rate for people with advanced degrees. Pretty much everyone else is doing OK, job-wise — but there's been a slight uptick for all the smarty-pants with master's degrees and doctorates. They aren't exactly struggling right now. "We're still talking about the people that have the highest pay in the job market and the lowest unemployment rate," Berger says. But for them, hiring is headed in the wrong direction. And as AI tools increasingly encroach on professionals' tasks — writing, coding, coordination, analysis — we'll likely see a lot more weakness at the higher end of the income scale than at the lower end.

This isn't the story we're used to hearing about employment. For decades the economy has been leaving workers with lower incomes and less education behind while professionals have reaped all the gains. But now those roles are reversed, and it's the high earners who are taking the hit. No wonder everyone is confused about how the economy is doing. "We're having some trouble collectively digesting that," Berger says. And the longer the white-collar hiring lull continues, he warns, the more the resentment will build.

"Even if there's no big surge in layoffs, people are just going to get grumpier and more dissatisfied," Berger says. "If it continues for three or four more years, it's going to cause a lot of discontent and low morale in corporate America."

Annual skilled trades competition builds technical and professional skills for Iowa students

High-quality career and professional skill development took center stage last week as over 600 high school and college students took part in the annual SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference . Held in Ankeny at the Des Moines Area Community College campus, this two-day competition featured over 50 different leadership and technical competitions for students to test their technical skills and knowledge, explore career pathways and make valuable connections with local industry leaders.

Southeast Polk High School seniors Delvis Kouete and Simon Frohock, both 17, were well-prepared for the competition, which featured timed activities related to industrial technology, carpentry, robotics, automotive repair and job interview techniques, among many others. For this year’s skills competition, Delvis competed in architectural drafting and was a member of the school’s quiz bowl team. Simon, the 2023 state champion in cabinet making, returned for a second year in the cabinet making contest. Both students competed well in their individual competitions, with Delvis placing fifth and Simon serving as this year’s runner-up.

“The skills competition can help you strive for excellence in your work and learning,” Simon said. “Even though it’s a competition and there is pressure to do well, it’s a good, low-risk way to see what an employee in this work has to do every day.”

Both Simon and Delvis noted that the competition not only helps to strengthen a student’s technical skills, but it also engages students in career pathway discovery and professional skill development.

“Being a part of SkillsUSA and competing in the skills competition has helped me learn new skills with my hands and work on teamwork, communication and leadership skills,” Delvis said. “You learn how to work with other people that aren’t like you and get your mind thinking about your future career.”

Along with the individual contests, all competitors at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference were required to submit a resume and take a professional development test that focused on workplace, professional and technical skills as well as overall knowledge of SkillsUSA.

“SkillsUSA helps provide real-world context to the content being taught by classroom educators,” said Kent Storm, state director for SkillsUSA Iowa. “Taking the learning beyond the classroom allows students to grow and learn next to industry partners and gain valuable experience."

As one of Iowa’s career and technical student organizations (CTSO) , SkillsUSA champions the skilled trades industry and provides opportunities for students to apply the skills they have developed in classrooms through conferences, competitions, community service events, worksite visits and other activities.

“Participation in a CTSO like SkillsUSA helps students gain hands-on experience and connect classroom curricula to careers,” said Cale Hutchings, education consultant at the Iowa Department of Education. “Through CTSOs, students can become leaders and strengthen their employability skills, which is valuable as they explore potential next steps in their college and career pathways.”

SkillsUSA boasts a roster of over 400,000 members nationwide. In Iowa, over 1,300 students and advisers in career and technical education programs participate in local SkillsUSA chapters.

At Southeast Polk, 21 student members are a part of their SkillsUSA chapter. Led by industrial technology teachers and chapter advisers Ryan Andersen and Brett Rickabaugh, the students have been involved with several community service projects, employer presentations and opportunities to work closely with instructors.

“Any time a student participates in SkillsUSA, it gives us more time with that student to elaborate on what we’ve learned in class,” Andersen said. “They can connect the idea to the planning, design and completion of a project and how that activity fits into a real career. That’s something we can’t replicate without a CTSO.”

Anderson also stated that students who participate in SkillsUSA and activities like the State Leadership and Skills Conference build confidence through their experiences.

“It really helps students to have the confidence to rely on their skills and what they know,” he said. “The skills competition requires them to use problem-solving skills and build off their knowledge to continue to learn and persevere.”

This year’s first-place winners at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference will move onward to compete with 6,000 other students at the national conference in Atlanta this June.

For Simon and Delvis, the skills competition was another step in building necessary skills and acumen for their futures. Simon, with his penchant for cabinet making, already has a full-time job lined up after graduation with a local cabinet shop. Additionally, Delvis would like to pursue something within the computer science field, perhaps in the coding or software engineering areas, and although he is changing fields, he believes SkillsUSA has helped him feel more prepared for the future.

“It has definitely helped me with skill-building and problem-solving,” he said. “What I’ve learned will be beneficial no matter what I decide to do next.”

We Were the Lucky Ones : The Biggest Differences Between the Novel and Hulu Series Starring Joey King

The book and the series are based off of Hunter’s family’s experiences during World War II

The Hulu limited series We Were the Lucky Ones sees its series finale Thursday, May 2. Both the show and its source material — the 2017 novel of the same name by Georgia Hunter — follow the Kurc family, who are Polish and Jewish, throughout World War II. Once the war began, the family was scattered across the globe, in places like a ship on the Mediterranean to a Siberian labor camp, and went years without knowing where some members were. The story is based upon the the author’s family’s experiences and stories of survival. Hunter wrote and researched the sprawling novel for nearly a decade, spending time in her family’s Radom hometown and in museums, as well as interviewing her relatives and their descendants. “I went into this particular project as a family historian, not really as an author,” Hunter told PEOPLE of the novel. “I had never written a book before, so I set out in 2008 to unearth and record the family story.”

The Hulu series stars Logan Lerman as Addy Kurc and Joey King as Halina Kurc. The cast also features Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Genek Kurc, Hadas Yaron as Mila Kurc, Amit Rahav as Jakob Kurc, Robin Weigert as Nechuma Kurc, Lior Ashkenazi as Sol Kurc, Sam Woolf as Adam, Michael Aloni as Selim, Eva Feiler as Bella and Moran Rosenblatt as Herta. Though the series stays close to its source material — Hunter also served as an executive producer on the show — there are some slight changes. Here are some of the biggest differences between Hunter’s novel and the Hulu series.

The series and the novel begin differently

In the novel, readers are first introduced to Addy, who, in 1939, is living in Paris and is unable to go back home to Poland for Passover. He has just received a letter from his mother, who warns him that it’s too dangerous to travel across German borders at the start of the war. The series starts out differently, and utilizes a nonlinear timeline. The show opens with the Kurc's youngest child, Halina, at a Red Cross office in Poland in 1945. Halina receives word that her brother, Genek, sister-in-law Herta and brother-in-law, Selim, are alive. The show then cuts to 1938, when Addy returns to Poland from Paris, and the family celebrates their last Passover together before the war.

Bella doesn't travel to Lvov alone

The Kurc family begin to get seperated from one another at the start of the war. Jakob, the Kurc’s youngest son, leaves for Lvov to fight in the military, and his girlfriend, Bella, decides to travel to meet him and to be closer to her sister, Anna.

In the novel, Bella attempts the journey to Lvov alone, traveling by horse and wagon by a man named Tomek. In the show, however, Halina accompanies her. The two are turned back at gunpoint after German officers discover that they are Jewish. Halina and Bella eventually make it to Lvov on their own, where Bella and Jakob get married in a secret ceremony.

A new scene involving Genek is added to the show

A new scene is added to the TV series, taking place when the eldest Kurc child, Genek, and his wife, Herta, are working in a Siberian labor camp after Genek is arrested by soldiers and deemed an enemy of the state. Genek didn’t disclose that he was Jewish and Polish before renting an apartment.  At the camp, Genek attempts to get a doctor and time off for Herta, who is pregnant, but his requests are denied. When his food rations are cut after he didn't show up for work (a prison guard who originally gave him permission later denied doing so), Genek loses his temper and tells off the Commandant about the unfair treatment of prisoners in the camp. No such scene happens in the novel, though Herta and Genek’s son, Józef, is still born in the labor camp.

Mila leaves her job as a nanny under slightly different circumstances

During the war, Mila takes a job as a nanny for a German family, but ultimately has to leave. In the novel, she resigns from her job after her boss confronts her about visiting a seamstress, who is helping Mila to hide her daughter, Felicia, in a Włocławek convent under a false name. In the series, Mila is confronted by her boss after she takes her boss’s son, Edgar, to the park. Edgar is playing a game with other children, where they are pretending to be soldiers and Jews, and complains to Mila about having “to be a Jew.” Mila and her boss get into an argument afterward with her boss saying that Edgar “was accused of being a Jew.”

Both versions of the story see Mila’s boss hitting her over the head with a vase, and Mila vowing to never return to work there.

Adam goes with Mila to find Felicia after a bombing in Warsaw

One of the most harrowing moments in the show and novel is when Mila goes to rescue Felicia in the aftermath of bombing in Warsaw. In the novel, Mila arrives at the convent and searches for her daughter with Tymoteusz, the father of another child. In the show, Halina’s partner, Adam, goes with Mila to rescue Felicia. Eventually, Mila and Adam, along with Halina, parents Sol and Nechuma, and Felicia embark on a journey through the Alps to reunite with Selim, Genek and Herta once the family learns that they are alive.

Addy learns of his family’s survival while with different people

A touching scene in both versions of the story sees Addy receiving news that his family is alive, while he’s living in Brazil. In the book, Addy learns of his family’s survival while with his friend Sebastian, a writer from Poland, who also traveled with Addy on the ship Cabo de Hornos .

In the show, Addy receives the good news while he is with Eliska, his ex-fiancée. In the series, Addy and Eliska stayed in touch, even after they called off their engagement, and Addy began a relationship with an American woman named Caroline.
