The beautiful Viareggio has always been a favourite seaside destination for Tuscans. This town in the province of Lucca , with more than 60,000 inhabitants, is known throughout Italy not only for its long beach of fine sand , but also for its Carnival , one of the most important in our country.

People go to Viareggio to relax in the sun on the Versilia coast, to be spoilt and pampered by the numerous services provided by the bathing establishments, to dine at sunset with their feet on the sand, but also to enjoy the nightlife : Viareggio’s nightlife is famous for its bars and discos, its beach parties, and its movida based on aperitifs.

If you have decided that Viareggio will be the destination of your next summer holiday, or simply a relaxing weekend at the seaside, you will discover a lively town full of services, a pedestrian promenade lined with magnificent Art Nouveau buildings, a hotel offer second to none, and of course a beach that is unrivalled in Tuscany in terms of services.

The Viareggio beach

The beach in Viareggio is the main reason why tourists come on holiday here. It is a beach of fine golden sand, fully equipped . The bathing establishments follow one after the other, all of them very beautiful and well-kept, both in appearance and in the services they make available to customers.

Many of them, for example, have a private swimming pool , others organise Pilates or yoga classes on the beach, and still others instead of beach umbrellas have spacious tents that can accommodate entire families.

However, all the bathing establishments in Viareggio provide the basic services : in addition to renting beach umbrellas, deckchairs, and sunbeds, you can take advantage of showers and changing rooms, a sea rescue service, pedalo rental, and a bar.

The free beach on the Viareggio seafront is practically non-existent, except for a narrow strip near the port. Remember that access to the sea is always permitted, but it is strictly forbidden to occupy the foreshore with your towel or plant beach umbrellas, unless you are a customer of the bathing establishments.

Lecciona Beach

South of the town of Viareggio and the port, shared with the resort of Torre del Lago Puccini , is the wide Lecciona beach . It is a completely free beach immersed in nature: behind it there is a dense Mediterranean scrub , which soon turns into a large pine forest traversed by a few footpaths, which then lead to the sea.

The Lecciona beach is the exact opposite of the Viareggio beach, as it is very long and you can even find areas where you will be totally isolated . The beach has no facilities, so bring water and food.

What to do in Viareggio

Viareggio is a very touristy town, where the undisputed protagonists are the sea and the beach . There are not too many things to see of historical interest, monuments or museums of extraordinary importance. Therefore, enjoy the days in the sun, stroll along the seafront, take a trip to the harbour and taste the typical fish dishes of Versilia’s gastronomy.

Viareggio waterfront

Viareggio’s seafront is always crowded with people walking along it, from first light until late at night. It is this area of the city that can be considered the centre , even though it stretches almost two kilometres in length, from the pier to the Principe di Piemonte hotel. Walking up and down the promenade, you can stop and look at the shop windows and boutiques, have a drink at one of the many bars, dine al fresco or simply people-watch.

Parallel to the pedestrian promenade is an extensive cycle path , which leads all the way to Lido di Camaiore and beyond, while across the street are many hotels , some of which are of major importance for Tuscan tourism.

Art Nouveau in Viareggio

Some of the buildings along the Viareggio seafront, including some bathing establishments, are elegant Art Nouveau  constructions from the early 20th century.

Worthy of note are the ‘Gran Caffè Margherita’ and the former ‘Caffè Savoia’, now renamed ‘Caffè liberty’, which hosted some of the most important personalities of the time: Guglielmo Marconi, Ermete Zacconi, Giacomo Puccini and many others.

The splendid ‘Gran Caffè Margherita’ with its unmistakable dome, the city’s exclusive meeting place, still dominates the promenade today, while the ‘Caffè liberty’, protected by the Sovrintendenza ai Beni Culturali e Ambientali, has retained its original structure and decorations. It is still possible to admire the designs, stuccoes, ceiling lights and decorations, all works by Chini.

Viareggio Pier and Harbour

At the end of the pedestrian promenade, south of the town, is the harbour of Viareggio . Take a walk around the Eugenio Guidotti pier , which runs alongside the canal that flows into the sea, stop to look at some beautifully crafted yachts and end the evening with a delicious fresh fish dinner at one of the restaurants that line it.

The port of Viareggio is of primary importance for the town’s economy, including the tourist economy, as boats for daily tourist excursions leave from here, for other locations in Versilia and even for the Cinque Terre.

Viareggio Carnival

Viareggio is famous throughout Italy for being the site of one of the most important carnival events in our country. The Viareggio Carnival attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year, who concentrate on the town’s seafront during the weekends of February and March to admire the enormous allegorical floats that are built over the course of an entire year.

Often inspired by satire, politics or costume events, the Viareggio Carnival floats are made of papier-mâché, and the Viareggio tradition of parading them dates back as far as 1873. But the carnival in Viareggio is much more than that. Parties and festivities accompany the event for its entire duration, and during these days the city’s various districts organise parties, dinners with typical dishes and masked balls, which last for the entire period.

In Viareggio, there are also two institutions linked to Carnival that live for the whole year: they are the Cittadella del Carnevale , Europe’s largest theme park dedicated to masks, composed of 16 hangars inside which the floats are built, and the Museo del Carnevale , which tells the story of this great festival, how it has evolved over the centuries and the way the floats are built.

Viareggio Pine forest

The road running parallel to the Viareggio promenade is Viale Michelangelo Buonarroti , which represents the eastern boundary of the Viareggio pine forest , a veritable green lung completely immersed in the urban fabric of the city, so much so that, in a small way, it is somewhat reminiscent of Manhattan’s Central Park .

In the Viareggio pine forest you can walk, rent bicycles, or have a drink in the numerous kiosks inside. There are also a few restaurants , a children’s train that travels the length and breadth of the park, and the Teatro Estate , an open-air space where plays are performed.

Where to stay in Viareggio

Viareggio is a very traditional seaside destination, and therefore the main forms of accommodation are hotels . There are hotels to suit all tastes and budgets, including two 5-star hotels. Many of them are located directly on the seafront , which proves to be by far the ideal area to stay in Viareggio as you are a stone’s throw from the sea, the pine forest and the shops. As you move inland, prices decrease, and this can be a winning strategy for those who do not have too much budget at their disposal.

Private rentals, in the form of flats , have also developed recently. Bed and breakfasts , on the other hand, are almost absent.

How to reach viareggio.

Viareggio is very easy to reach, as it lies at the junction of the A11 Firenze-Mare and A12 Genova-Rosignano Marittimo motorways. From Florence it takes less than an hour, from Pisa only 30 minutes, the same from the centre of Lucca .

Viareggio is also very convenient to reach by public transport, as the town has a very important railway station , which receives regional and intercity trains from the Tuscan coast and hinterland. Trains from Florence depart frequently, and the journey takes about one hour and 30 minutes.

A Travel Guide to Viareggio on the Italian Riviera

tourist information viareggio italy

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Viareggio is the southernmost Italian Riviera resort on Italy's Mediterranean coast and the largest beach town in Tuscany . Liberty-style buildings housing shops, cafes, and seafood restaurants line its promenade, and there are several good Liberty-style villas, including one built by Puccini, in town.

Although Viareggio was at its peak as a resort in the early to mid-1900s, it's still a top Tuscan town for beaches, seafood, and nightlife. It's also known for holding one of Italy's top carnevale , or mardi gras , festivals.

Attractions in Viareggio

  • Beaches : The coast is lined with sandy beaches, most part of privately owned facilities although there is a free beach area in the south part of the city. For a price at the private beach establishments, you get a beach chair and umbrella and use of facilities like changing rooms and restrooms. Most facilities have a snack bar too. The sea is usually calm and good for swimming.
  • Promenade: A long seafront promenade lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants runs between the beach and town. The south end has Liberty-style architecture. The promenade is the place to see and be seen, especially during the evening passeggiata .
  • Pineta di Ponente: The large pinewood park, just two blocks from the beach, is a good place for walking and escaping the sun.
  • Piazza Shelley: One of the town squares is named for English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. It's a pretty green space with benches and a bust of Shelley, who drowned off the coast near Viareggio in 1922.
  • Villa Paolina: Located near Piazza Shelley, this villa was commissioned by Napoleon's sister in 1822.
  • Villa Amore: Located on the main street along the sea, this villa was the first of several Liberty-style villas that were built in the countryside in the early 1900s where Viareggio later developed around them.
  • Villino Flore: One of the best examples of Liberty style, this villa was built in 1912.
  • Villa Puccini : The composer's last villa, is on Via Belluomini, around the corner from Grand Hotel Principe del Piemonte.
  • Museo Cittadella del Carnevale: The Carnival Citadel Museum has an exhibition of floats, masks, carnival postcards, and other memorabilia related to carnevale.

Carnevale in Viareggio

Viareggio holds one of the largest and most celebrated carnival festivals in Italy, drawing more than a million people each year. The famous parade features wildly elaborate floats, many of which are timely commentaries on current political or societal issues.

The parade runs along the seafront promenade and is usually held the three Sundays before carnevale , the day of carnevale (Shrove Tuesday), and the Sunday following. Admission is charged for the parades. Theater, music, masked balls, and other events are held during the carnival season, too. There's even a carnival museum in town.

Where to Stay and Eat

Many hotels are found near the beach and some have rooms with sea views or private beaches. Villa Tina was one of the first Liberty style buildings in Viareggio and the 3-star hotel still has period furniture and decor. Grand Hotel Principe del Piemonte, dating from 1922, is one of the historic hotels and is reminiscent of Viareggio's heyday. Il Principino, on the seafront across the street, was Viareggio's first beach resort built in 1938.

There's a small fishing port in Viareggio and you can expect good seafood made with fresh fish at most restaurants, especially those near the port area.

How to Get There

Viareggio is on Italy's west coast in the area of Tuscany known as the  Versilia Coast . It's about 20 kilometers north of Pisa and 30 kilometers west of Lucca.

Fortunately, Viareggio is also on the rail line that runs along the coast between Genoa and Rome, which makes it relatively easy to get to by public transit. Alternatively, it's just off the A12 autostrada (toll road) that runs along the coast from the French border. Free parking is available outside the center or there are many paid parking places in town. However, the closest airport is Pisa, about 15 miles away.

Viareggio Guide: Everything You Need to Know about One of Italy's Favorite Beachtowns in Tuscany?

Updated: May 5, 2022

Tuscany is a multifaceted region with so much to offer. So many of us think of cypress tree-lined gravel roads cutting through rolling green hills with olive trees and row after row of grapevines. Did you know Tuscany also boasts 162 miles of coastline with quaint little resort villages? And Viareggio is one of them. This guide includes restaurants, hotels, and activities that will give you a good start for your visit to the Tuscan seaside.

tourist information viareggio italy

Viareggio is a seaside town on the north-western coast of Tuscany, in the area known as Versilia. It is the second-largest city in the province of Lucca (Lucca being the largest) and is approximately an hour and 20-minute drive from Florence. Coincidently a train ride clocks in at an hour and 30 minutes and costs as little as 10 euros.

A little bit of history

In the late 15th century Lucca successfully claimed the coastline from Pisa and Genoa. Torre Matilde was built around 1530 to better protect the harbor, its incoming goods from the sea, and its wealthy period of flourishing trades. The Lucchese turned Viareggio into a great port city for Lucca. The beginning of the 17th century saw the town grow in world popularity when the Duchess Maria Luisa di Borbone decided to commission the first sea resort to be built. Many artists and poets followed: Percy B. Shelley (he has a piazza dedicated in his honor), Lord Byron, Manzoni, Puccini, and D’Annunzio enjoyed the beauty of the seaside village.

Most of the town's architecture was lost in the 2nd World War when it took on heavy bombing. Torre Matilde and Palazzo Fanucci Bernardini Mansi (1700) are only a few of the historical buildings that survived. But there are many buildings representing Liberty Architecture (Italian phrase for Art Nouveau) to be enjoyed as you stroll through town. One of the most captivating and wonderful examples of the local liberty architecture is the Gran Cafè Margherita.

Gran Cafe Margherita on Viareggio's Promenade

You may even enjoy a visit to Villa Paolina - which used to be the Paolina Borghese’s (the sister of Napoleone Bonaparte) summer home, it is now home to the Musei Civici di Villa Paolina (Villa Paolina Civic Museums).

The other event that made Viareggio world famous is its annual Carnevale and it is possibly the most famous in Italy- after the Venice Carnivale of course. This major month-long event attracts a large crowd with street parties day and night, parades of floats, masquerade balls, and festivities of all kinds. The first parade was organized in 1873 by some rich bourgeois to protest, in an ironic way, the high taxes they had to pay. Now the townspeople turn their artistic ways to poking fun at celebrities and politicians. The daytime parades with floats are followed by evening parties called "veglioni colorati" in which everyone dresses in a specific color and according to the announced theme. Sounds like a perfect time for people watching and mingling with everyday Italians!

Finding a room for Viareggio's Carnevale is hard unless you book way in advance. If you miss the event and/or just want to enjoy the resort city without the crowds, you can still get your Carnevale fix by visiting the Carnival Museum inside the Cittadella (the Carnival Town) designed by the architect Francesco Tomassi. (more info below)

Why people come to Viareggio: The beaches

Local beaches bookend the 3km long promenade. In between are more than 15 beach clubs (Bagno, s. Bagni, pl.) where you pay for a spot on the beach with sun loungers and an umbrella. The price of the rental also includes access to the beach club's private showers, bathrooms, changing rooms, and beach bar. NOTE: most of the good sunbed locations (think closest to the water and/or bar) are bought up by season pass holders and reserved all year long regardless of whether the owners are there or not. So please do not think the beach club staff are being mean to tourists by putting them in the back. If you smile and ask politely they will do their best to make you happy.

The town comes alive May 1st when the tourist season starts. I was there at the end of April with no crowds and availability in all hotels that were opened (some don't open until May or June).

One downside to the lack of crowds means the beach clubs aren’t open yet. So if you want to lay on the sand you will have to bring a towel and head to the public beaches. If you are like me and not a fan of sand but want the sun and the sound of the sea waves crashing the rocks or shoreline, head a little farther south past the public beach to the harbor (you can’t miss it). There are two walkways that stretch out to the end of the harbor. Both have wide walls with built-in circular benches large enough to layout on. Of course, the concrete is a lot harder than the sand so choose your spot wisely and enjoy the sun and sea as you prefer.

Thursday is market day in Viareggio where all the shopkeepers bring their products to you. If you want to shop on the promenade (mornings only), you will find souvenirs, clothes, and trinkets in these stalls. If you travel a few blocks inland you will find the neighborhood market (7AM-2PM) where you can find almost anything you can think of. Be sure to wear your walking shoes as it is massive.

Fair warning: as with other international resort towns (think Cabo, South Beach, Ibiza) Viareggio is expensive. But with the right research, flexibility, and some extra walking, you can find what you need at any budget.

Worth the walk

Food in the harbor area and farther south are noticeably cheaper than on the promenade. Walk to the south end and enjoy the sunset views from the harbor.

Notable events

February- Carnevale. As I stated above if you plan to stay in the main city center and Promenade area, it is a good idea to book your hotel a year in advance.

August- Italians head to the beach. This means a packed resort town, with lots of congestion. Pack your patience, if you decide to brave the crowds.

The Carnival city to explore all year round

Viareggio is among the most popular seaside destinations in Versilia and the whole of Tuscany. This elegant village, nestled among the peaks of the Apuan Alps and the long coastline washed by the Ligurian Sea, boasts an Art Nouveau soul that you can explore in all its splendour by walking along the Passeggiata Margherita . Among historic buildings, elegant bars and monuments like the Clock Tower and the Palazzo delle Muse, you can travel back to the 1920s. One of the most renowned examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Viareggio is Villa Argentina , which today hosts exhibitions and concerts.

Other must-sees include the Church of San Paolino , with its stunning mosaic on the façade, and the Basilica of Sant’Andrea , with its meticulous, functional style typical of the Restoration.

The city is closely linked to the traditional Carnival inaugurated in 1873. The statue of Burlamacco , the official mascot of this centuries-old event, welcomes visitors along Viale Regina Margherita. If you want to learn more about the origins of this tradition and its evolution over the past 150 years, we recommend visiting the Carnival Citadel and the Museum of the Carnival of Viareggio .

Viareggio is a smaller city in Tuscany , in Versilia in the province of Lucca in Italy . The city is located on the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea, and the country surrounding the city is an area of beautiful hills and quaint farm houses.

The town is not very useful to most travellers as the beach is completely private, taken over by members only beach clubs. The town is famous for its carnival Carnivale di Viareggio in a neighboring city Torre del Lago.

The town is gay friendly, and is surrounded by many attractive cities. It is also a less expensive alternative to some surrounding beach towns.

The city is 38 km from Pisa , 28 km from Massa , 48 km from Livorno , and 96 km from Florence .

Viareggio is on the line between Genova and Rome and can be reached by local trains from Pisa (15 minutes) and from La Spezia (1 hour). From Viareggio there is also a very slow line to Lucca (15 minutes), Montecatini (45 minutes), Pistoia (1 hour), Prato (75 minutes) and Florence (90 minutes).

The closest airport is in Pisa . From there it's possible to reach Viareggio by train (at the station Pisa Airport take the train to Pisa centrale and then the regional train to La Spezia with stops in Torre del Lago Puccini and Viareggio) or by bus (in the large square in front of the airport go to the bus stop of Vaibus and take the bus to Torre del Lago and Viareggio; tickets on board). Visit Viareggio, one of the most popular seaside resorts in Tuscany

Photo of Viareggio

Visit Viareggio

Once one of the most glamorous seaside resorts in Italy, Viareggio is still very popular and retains a good deal of the Art Nouveau architecture for which it is well known. It is situated north of Pisa and west of Lucca in northern Tuscany on the Versilia Coast.

Unfortunately Viareggio is also quite expensive, reasonably priced accommodation can be hard to find in high season, and free access to the beaches is pretty much non-existent...

Visiting Viareggio

While Viareggio is still very popular and rather expensive it is no longer the 'destination of the rich' that it was 100 years ago. It is however an attractive resort with the art deco architecture and the long promenade adding a great deal of character.

History of Viareggio

During the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century Viareggio was one of the most elegant and upmarket seaside resorts in Italy, which continued until a large fire destroyed much of the seafront in 1917. A great deal of the destroyed buildings were then replaced with Art Nouveau buildings, an architectural style that was popular at the time.

This history explains the distinctive appearance of the centre of the resort where a reasonable number of the cafes and villas are still in this style.

Stroll along the Passeggiata Margherita - the long promenade that follows the seafront through the town - to see the best examples of the Art Nouveau architecture. The highlight for Art Nouveau enthusiasts is near the Marina end of the Passeggiata around the Gran Caffe Margherita

Art deco restaurant in Viareggio

This beachfront walk is a pleasant way to take your evening promenade, and the center of activity at all times of day or night with a great deal of shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Unfortunately views of the sea are rather rare along the promenade since the shops and cafes are between the promenade and the beach.

Hint: if you don't want to pay much for your lunch walk across to the harbour where small boats sell snacks such as chips and fried anchovies!

Italy This Way review: we enjoyed visiting Viareggio, but felt that with a little effort to improve some of the less well maintained buildings and park areas and to add trees and shelter to the long promenade it could be a great deal better...

Viareggio beaches

The beaches in Viareggio are crowded and it is hard to find a free (non-paying) place, but are also sandy, sunny and well maintained - if you tire of the artistic marvels of the great Tuscan cities and need a day where the children can relax Viareggio is probably just what you are looking for!

The main beach is long, sandy, and covered in long rows of brightly coloured parasols, typical of the larger Italian resorts and quite a sight if you have never seen an Italian beach resort: there are literally thousands of neat rows of colourful parasols with two loungers and a small table placed under each of them, and visitors pay to 'rent' the chairs for a day or half a day (typically 10 - 20 euros a day).

There are various other beaches nearby (just outside the town centre) which are rather less expensive - but of course also without the Art Deco architecture and "buzz" of Viareggio town centre.

Sandy beach in Viareggio

We found two free beaches in Viareggio. One is a tiny strip of beach at the marina end of the main beach, and the other is an extensive sandy beach if you travel a couple of kilometres to the east of the town, beyond the main harbour and along Viale Europa.

Note: the town tourist map might make you think it is a pleasant walk through a park to reach the main public beach and this is what we set off to do. However it is actually a very long walk, perhaps 2-3 kilometres, quite a long way on a hot day if you are walking with young children! We recommend you drive...

Viareggio Carnival

If sitting on a crowded beach has little appeal to you we recommend you visit Viareggio in the heart of winter! The town is at its most interesting in late January and early February when a popular carnival is held here every Sunday around Shrove Tuesday, with decorated floats that attract crowds from across the region.

Most floats carry enormous papier-maché models of celebrities and politicians, so non-Italians might not recognise many of them, but it is very entertaining all the same.

Attractions nearby

You can follow along a very scenic avenue lined by lime trees and along the edge of a forest just inland from the coast and more beaches and called the Viale dei Tigli - for a few kilometres to the south-east of Viareggio.

From here you can reach the resort and beach at Marina di Torre del Lago Puccini (turn right at the end of the avenue) and the Puccini Villa (turn left at the end of the avenue). The Puccini Villa is is the one time home of the Italian opera composer Puccini and in a pretty lakeside setting on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli and where you can now visit the villa and a small Puccini Museum.

A little further afield, visitors will all want to visit Pisa but don't forget to allow time to see Lucca as well: just a short distance from Viareggio, Lucca is one of the loveliest medieval towns in Italy.

Viareggio, along the Versilia Coast

a town with a "liberty" soul

If you are interested in catching the cultural aspect of Viareggio , most of its liberty and historical buildings are located along the above-mentioned promenade, and consequently easily reachable by foot .

One of the most captivating and wonderful examples of the local liberty architecture is the Gran Cafè Margherita : you could stop here for breakfast, a cocktail, lunch or dinner - food and drinks are always simply delicious ... even if they are a bit expensive.  But then you are also paying for the refined, sophisticated ambiance  which will remind you of a country club during the 1920-30’s, when people like the musician Giacomo Puccini or the physician Guglielmo Marconi used to "hang out" at Margherita.

Gran Caffe Margherita at Viareggio, Tuscany

Tower Matilde - dating back to the XVIth century, it was built to protect the city from sea incursions and pirates!  It represents the core of Viareggio; it is located just in front of the first little harbour built in the 1820 and today it is home to many art and cultural exhibitions. Stop and visit both Palazzo Bernardini, built in the 1700's by a prestigious family from Lucca and Palazzo Belluomini, the summer residence built in the 1600's for a well-to-do family from Lucca .

Viareggio has gained its popularity all around the world not only for its Carnival celebrations but also for housing some of the most ancient and peculiar bathing establishments along the Versilia coast: the liberty façade of the Bagno Balena (Whale Bath) is renowned worldwide, together with the Magazzini Duilio 48 and their typical rounded shape.  Many of the bathing establishments are from the early 1920's, though they have been modernized to include showers, pools, restaurants and games for all ages.  A vacation that makes its base around Viareggio will always have easy access to the clear beautiful waters that characterize this area; search here for places to stay in or near Viareggio.

Keeping on walking along the promenade (also known as La Passeggiata ), you’ll bump into the Clock Tower and Piazza Mazzini Palazzo delle Muse and the home to the Viareggio art musem, located right next door, houses more than 3000 works of art. Here many Summer and outdoor events usually take place: in front of the square,  you’ll find the characteristic Burlamacco statue , the universal symbol of the Viareggio Carnival.  First depicted in 1931 by Uberto Bonetti  he used the colors of white and red to recall the colorful summer umbrellas along the beach.

Moving towards the final part of the promenade running alongside the dock, you’ll find the famous Politeama Theatre and if you keep on walking, you reach the lighthouse , a suggestive panoramic point. Gaze upon the blue waters of the Mediterraneostretching in every direction ... it is truly impressive! The harbour is located at the end of the Burlamacca canal and is composed of 6 different darsene - docks - each housing different kinds of boats.

Moving - still on foot - a bit towards the back of the city, Villa Paolina - that used to be the Paolina Borghese’s  (the sister of Napoleone Bonaparte) summer home, it is now home to the Musei Civici di Villa Paolina (Villa Paolina Civic Museums). Maybe you could leave the visit of Villa Paolina  - together with Villa Argentina , another wonderful building to see - on your way back to the station or at the end of your discovery of Viareggio.

I suggest that you enjoy the outdoors by picnicking under the shadow of the green pinewoods ; Viareggio boasts of two large forest areas- Pineta di Ponente and Pineta di Levante - both offering bike and tandem rentals, bars, gelaterie and tables for enjoying some food or resting a bit.

Viareggio

This quaint little beach resort town is located near the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and is the second largest city in the province of Lucca, in Tuscany, Italy. This area became popular for its long stretch of beach, back in the 19 th century and since then, the fame and popularity of the town has increased more and more.

Back then, this city was the only way of connecting Lucca to the sea and was hence, used as a seaport. The oldest structure in Viareggio is a military-built tower known as Torre Matilde . It was built to defend the entire district of Lucca in the 16 th century.

Differing views can be found regarding the history of the name of this city. Some records show the name as deriving from the Latin word Via Regis (Kings’ Road), which is in reference to the road that connected Lucca to the beach, where the Torre Matilde stood in defense.

Other views from historians tell us that the name derives from Vicus Regius,’ vicus’ meaning a small inhabited area, and ‘regius’ meaning royal, i.e. a populated area which belonged to the empire.

Viareggio became an independent city in 1820 and the major industries that have flourished within this town include fishery, flower farming and ship building. Accordingly, the area is full of greenery and has beautiful blooms, as well as many shipyards.

The town’s current status of a beach resort developed since the 19 th century, when the first two resorts were opened, along with a church and a casino, by the government of that time.

With the arrival of the 20 th century, the beaches saw drastic changes and developments and the Passeggiata or promenade was also born during this time. Shops and cafes opened up alongside it, converting this city into the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea”.

tourist information viareggio italy

The oldest buildings and hotels within Viareggio still contain elements of architectural style that refer to the Art Deco and Art Nouveau style.

The event that makes Viareggio extremely well-known is its Carnevale (Carnival) held each year since the late 1800s. In this carnival, a parade passes through a boardwalk known as Passeggiata a Mare (The Sea Promenade) and its significant feature, are the giant papier-mâché floats, created specifically for this event.

In the weeks preceding Easter, a variety of events and fairs are held throughout the city including this parade and other activities. The symbol and official mask of the parade is Burlamacco , a clown figure dressed in red and white, designed by Uberto Bonetti in 1930.

The Premio letterario Viareggio Repaci for literature (Viareggio Literary Prize) is a prestigious award for Italian literature that was established in the early 1900s and named after the city of Viareggio. The idea for the award was actually brought forward by three friends named Alberto Colantuoni, Carlo Salsa, and Leonida Repaci, who wished for it to rival a similar kind of award given in Milan.

Another event worth mentioning is the Festival Gaber , held in August every year in memory of the musician and composer, Giorgio Gaber. This event is attended by many music enthusiasts, and a lot of famous Italian musicians grace the event with their presence as well.

The sandy beaches of Viareggio are mostly owned by private resorts and the publicly-owned area is the property of the Parco Naturale Regionale (Regional National Park).

Along with its beaches, Viareggio also has amazing nightlife and shopping opportunities for its visitors, but the main reason for its fame, are the luxurious beach resorts and the annual carnival event. This is why the city is also known as Città del Carnevale or Carnival Town and it is the perfect location for a calming beach holiday amid rolling hills and picturesque farmhouses.
