Traveling C-Stand ?

Michael totten.

I'm on a small documentary project that's traveling all around the world. Is there such thing as a C-Stand that will fold up or break down for easy travel on a plane, train and automobile.

We've been renting locally... but sometimes it's more of a pain to find a grip house in some of these remote locations than it's worth.

The closest thing I know of are turtle stands like these . They can take either 20" or 40" uprights.

If you're only doing lightweight gripwork, you could use some kind of folding stand with goboheads and arms.

+1 light stand with gobo head and arm. maybe bring a sandbag as it will be a little less sturdy.

JD Hartman

Look at the Matthews C stand survival kit. It's about as compact as you can get without resorting to folding kit stands. Instead of sandbags, get the water filled weight bags. Minimal addditional weight in your kit when empty.

Take a c-stand arm and knuckle and use aluminum light stands. There are many different sizes and weights of the stands the smaller the more portable and less stable. If you want super portability there are small knuckles made by companies like Bogan which allow you to easily attach a small flag to a light stand. You don?t have the strength or reach of a c-stand style arm and knuckle but it is supper light.

Add to it a Matthew?s road rags kit and you are styling.

How to Use a C-Stand — Parts, Functions & Proper Usage Tips

W hat would you consider the most versatile tool on a set? Most filmmakers and grips would probably come to the same conclusion — the C-Stand, otherwise known as the workhorse of a film production. They are the humble heroes that can impact both the quality of a shot as well as the safety of a set. In this article, we’ll cover the most common ways of how to use a C-Stand on a set and the fundamental steps to setting one up.

what is c-stand

First, let’s define c-stand.

As versatile as C-Stands are, they are generally built in similar ways. While they can differ in size and lock mechanisms, they generally have the same fundamental parts that can be used in countless ways.

c-stand DEFINITION

What is a c-stand.

A C-Stand is a metal stand designed to position lights, silks, flags, backdrops, and other tools on a set. C-Stand is believed to be short for Century Stand because they were used in early cinema to hold sun reflectors that were 100 square known as Centuries. C-stands are composed of a base with three legs, two risers to extend upward, a gobo head, and a gobo arm which attaches to the hobo head. C-Stands are one of the most versatile tools on a set and are a grip’s best friend.

Parts of a C-Stand

  • Base including three legs
  • Two risers that extend upward

What are c-stands used for.

C-Stands date back to early cinema and overtime grips and filmmakers have used them in countless ways. But here is a list of the most fundamental reasons why someone would use a C-Stand on set.

1. Position flags

One of the most common ways a C-Stand is used on set is to position or “stick” a flag to modify light. Negative fill, nets, and diffusion flags can all be attached to the stand to be placed precisely where it needs to be.

How to use a C-Stand  •  Shaping Light with Flags

2. hanging lights.

Lights can be extended overhead of a set or subject using a C-Stand. It is important that this is done safely and with appropriately weighted lights that the stand can support.

3. Two stands for diffusion

Two C-Stands can be used together to grip both sides of a larger diffusion grid or silk. Beyond diffusion, grips also use this for larger duvetyne sheets for negative fill.

4. Two stands for backdrops

A common use for filmmakers of a smaller budget and no studio is to use two C-Stands with two arms rigged together to hang a green screen or any other material for the background of a shot.

5. Boom pole

If you are conducting a stationary interview, using a C-Stand to position a boom pole to capture audio can help you if you are short on hands. These techniques plus a few more are demonstrated in the video below.

What are C-Stands used for  •  5 Reasons to use one

Now that you understand the most common uses of the C-Stand, it’s important to know the individual parts before setting one up.

C-stand for camera tutorial

C-Stands may vary in size, width of metal, and base locking mechanisms. But most stands are composed of the same fundamental parts. Understanding these parts will better help you understand how to use a C-Stand.

The base of a C-Stand has three legs of different heights so that they can be collapsed together. Bases can differ based on the type of stand you have. Some bases have a Rocky Mountain leg in which the tallest reg can be raised upward to put on a curb or ledge. Others do not and rely on a spring loaded system.

2. Gobo Head/Grip Head

The gobo head, also known as the grip head, is what connects gobo arms to the stand. This is why they are also referred to as joints. Gobo heads have diamond shaped holes in which the arms are inserted. Once the head is tightened these holes close and clamp down on the arms to properly secure the rig.

3. Gobo Arm/ Grip Arm

The gobo arm is what allows flags, lights, etc. to hang over a set out of frame from a camera. They attach to the main part of the C-Stand via the gobo head. To get a better understanding of the parts of the C-Stand, check out this video produced by one of the innovators.

C-Stand for camera basics

Now that you understand the fundamental parts of a C-Stand, let’s dive into how to set one up so that you can use them on your next project.

How to open c-stand legs

How to use a c-stand.

Learning how to use a C-Stand is incredibly important because it also affects the safety of the set. There are key steps to keep in mind when setting up a C-Stand to ensure the safety of the crew and talent on set.

1. Unfolding the legs

Unfolding the legs of a C-Stand depends on the type of base your stand has. For instance a turtle base will have a lever that will unlock the legs while other stands have a knob you will need to loosen to unfold the legs. No matter what base you have, it’s important to make sure that all of the legs are spread out completely and are locked in place.

2. Positioning the stand

When you are placing your C-Stand on the floor in the position it needs to be, make sure that the tallest, biggest leg is facing toward the weight that is being supported. This will make the stand more stable.

Next, you will place a sandbag (or two) on the tallest leg of the C-Stand. Why? If placed on the shorter two legs, the weight of the sandbag will fall on the ground and will not support the C-Stand as much. On the tallest leg, the entire weight of the sandbag falls on the C-Stand. Watch these first three steps being demonstrated in the video below.

PRO TIP: How to use a C-Stand

4. mount your light/flag.

Whatever you are mounting whether it be a flag, net, or light, you will typically be attaching it to the knuckle at the end of the gobo arm. The biggest thing to remember when tightening this knuckle is “Righty tighty/ Lefty loosey.”

Always make sure that you are tightening the knuckle toward  the weight of the flag/light. This will make sure that if the light begins to fall, the weight of it will further tighten the knuckle. If it were on the other side, the weight of the light will loosen the knuckle and potentially fall. For a more visual demonstration, check out the video below. This step is incredibly important for safety on set.

5. raising the c-stand.

To raise the C-Stand upward, you will need to extend the risers. Always start by raising the top riser first. If you raise the bottom one, you will not be able to reach the next riser.

How to open C-Stand legs and use them

6. grabbing a stand.

When transporting a C-Stand, the very first thing to remember is to grab the gobo arm and the pole within your palm. If your hand grabs in between the arm and pole, it will be crushed when handing it off to someone.

Grip tips: Types of C-Stands

7. transporting a c-stand.

When carrying a C-Stand, light stand, rail, or any other long piece of equipment around set, be sure to be shouting “Points!” This warns others that there is a long piece of equipment moving and to be more cautious. This is especially important when turning corners or walking through doors.

8. Storing C-Stands

C-Stand bases are designed to all have an identical footprint. This means they can be nested or soldiered together when storing them on set, ultimately taking up less space. To do this, simply place the tallest leg over the medium leg of another C-Stand.

How to use a C-Stand 101 with Eric Jang

C-Stands are the workhorse of a film set. They are one of, if not the single most versatile piece of equipment on a set. From big budget studio sets to lower budget DIY filmmaking, a C-Stand is a great investment for any filmmaker. Not to mention their durability can often make them last decades.

How to Use C-Stands Correctly

Do you know what the "c" is for in the name, c-stand? As a photographer or filmmaker who uses these daily, you should. This video gives information you must know about c-stands, how to use them on set, and what to do and what not to do when using them.

Full disclosure, I didn't know the "c" is for century stand, and I didn't know you had a left and right side, of which the right-side tightens by itself. I didn't know what a rocky-mount base was either, and I never checked or knew that some c-stands could actually lift up like that.

The next time I'm on set, I will be the most knowledgeable photographer, shouting at the assistant setting the c-stand up incorrectly, and I will tell the team all about the glory of the c-stand.

On set we learn names of things by either using them or by someone calling out the words in a rush to get the next shot. On a day of shooting, whether you are in charge of lighting or the photographer, many things happen, and it's not always easy to think about what you've learned. The aim is to get the shots. But from this video, I noticed that I often take things for granted, and after the next shoot, I will surely take more time reflecting on the shoot day and how it all came together with the use of the unsung hero, the mighty c-stand.

Man Orders $3,000 Sony Camera, Receives Bags of Mysterious White Powder Instead

I guess we know who taught Patrick to set his c-stands. C-stands and other grip heads should NEVER be set with the weight turning the knuckle to the left, like they are several times in this video. There is no actual locking mechanism on grip heads, so the weight of whatever is on the end of the arm will loosen the head over time unless the arm is set to the right (righty-tighty, lefty-loosey). This causes a safety issue and can seriously injure someone if they get hit with a falling light or flag.

edit: even though he states the right hand rule correctly, he shows it incorrectly several times in the beginning of the video.

"Righty-Tighty" -- that's the easiest way to remember it, especially if you're under pressure on a shoot with a million and one other thing to think about. :)

exactly. I was expounding on it for those that didn't understand.

Beginner's Guide to C-Stands: An Essential Film Set Tool

Using c-stands properly is an essential part of working on a film set..

Shane Hurlbut C-Stand Basics

If you're working on a smaller set (or you're trying to become a grip yourself), knowing how to deal with C-stands the right way will help make sure the set runs more smoothly and nobody gets hurt . I know some of you grips out there may have your own specific ways of working (and you're probably going to tell us about it), but these videos below are a great introduction to this fantastic tool.

First up, this video with Eric Jang goes through different types of stands and the best way to use them:

Shane Hurlbut also recently posted this video, and while it is sponsored specifically by Matthews, the information is useful regardless of the brand you use:

Putting a sand bag or two on the stand is important even if you're just throwing up a 2' x 3' solid as a sider. It's also important to make sure that your sand isn't touching the ground (regardless of the stand you put it on) as it won't be putting its full weight on the stand. There is almost always a solution to do things in a safe way, and when there isn't, you probably shouldn't do it.

Is the World Ready for a Fully AI-based Complete Editing Suite?

A look at ltx studio and the myriad of ai-based editing tools and features..

While we continue to report on how AI models like OpenAI’s Sora, Luma’s Dream Machine, and Runway’s Gen-3 Alpha are promising (or threatening) a complete generative AI video revolution, we do want to take the time to highlight some new AI products which are using AI as a base and for features to explore how this technology might continue to shape the industry as well.

Today let’s take a quick look at LTX Studio, which does make use of generative AI video, but is a more holistic AI-based editing suite that uses AI to help with storyboarding, editing, and pretty much all types of video production.

LTX Studio AI-Based Editing Suite

As you can see in the video above (plus in others below), LTX Studio promises to allow editors to control every aspect of your videos using AI. From ideation to final edits, LTX Studio presents itself as one holistic platform for all things video. It’s only available right now for Beta access, but reviews are starting to come in and the whole system does appear to be quite powerful and promising.

It’s also a clear sign of where the industry is heading. We’ve seen AI creep into Adobe products and NLEs like Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve already have text-based editing features with plenty more AI tools to undoubtedly come soon.

This LTX Studio does look to be one of the more advanced, holistic options so far though that does offer plenty of tools and features for pre-production in general, making it appealing to those looking to utilize AI tools and features early—and often—throughout their filmmaking process.

Check out these further demos below. And we’ll keep you in the loop as more details about this powerful new platform come out.

C-Stands: How To Set Up and Use Them

May 26, 2016 By Morgan Leave a Comment

Business Coaching Class The Slanted Lens

Hi, this is Edward C-Stand Hands. Today on The Slanted Lens you’ll learn how to easily use a C-Stand, a great heavy duty stand for lights and so much more. Norms Studio Equipment is my choice of C-Stand. I’ve been using their products since the beginning of my career. Norms C-Stands feature a unique spring loaded feature that helps control the grip head when loosening it. This makes attaching and removing objects hassle-free. Check out each of the stands I highlighted in this lesson. Use “theslantedlens” for 30% off C-Stands at Norms!

40″ C-Stand ;  Break-down 40″ C-Stand ;  40″ Super C-Stand ;  20″ C-Stand

Let’s get started and see what we can do.

Light Diagram-Light C-Stands

The standard stand is a two riser, as I mentioned. The third knob on the very top, loosens and takes off the gobo head, or the grip head. It reveals a baby pin if you want to put lighting equipment straight onto the C-Stand, which we do a lot. It’s very useful that way. Now when we loosen the stand we can raise it up. Always start with the top riser. If I raise it from the bottom up then I can’t reach the top one when it’s time when I need to go higher. But don’t twist this knob ten times to raise and lower the stand. I hate that. Just half a turn is all you need. Otherwise you get it up there, it’s heavy, and you’re trying to twist twist, twist. Just a half a turn, tighten. Half turn, tighten. Half turn, tighten. Very simple to do.

What makes a C-Stand so absolutely valuable? It’s the extension arm. It’s the ability to take this, get it out onto the set, and be able to get a flag out there, get a light out there onto set. To cut some light to work on set. That’s what makes it so valuable. Now there’s an important way to set this up. If you put your weight on the right side so you’re tightening to the right, tight to the right- righty tighty lefty loosey- then you put weight on this and it just, it’s not gonna go anywhere. It’s gonna get tighter and tighter. But if you put your weight on the other side and you tighten it, now I’m going, tightening to the left. And if I put weight on this it will just make it loose. I can’t tighten it strong enough to make it stay in place. So righty tighty lefty loosey. Always tighten towards the weight that’s out on the arm. That’s the rule. If some Neanderthal grip gets hold of this and really wrenches it tight and your weights out there and you’re going, “I can’t get this unloose,” then just put your weight on the end back here and that’s going lefty loosey. And it loosens your stand up, makes it so you can undo it. Drop it right into place. It’s very easy.

Another feature about these stands you really need to understand is called the Rocky Mountain Leg. When you loosen the bottom knob, this leg slides up. What does that do for you? Well if you’re on set and you’ve got to slide this stand in somewhere there’s no room to work, you just simply raise that leg up, lock it down, put a sandbag on it and you’re ready to go. That Rocky Mountain Leg will work on hillsides, a curb. There are so many ways you’ll use that.

Another important thing to understand about C-Stands is an important principle called nesting. You know the legs are different levels. That’s so they can sit in the same footprint. It’s not only a convenient way to store them on set, but it’s a great way to work when you’re on set. If I’ve got my flag here I need to set another flag in next to it, I simply grab a stand and slide it right in there. The two stand will take up almost the same footprint. It makes it very tight on set and easy to work with. It’s a principle called nesting. It’s also a great way to store them.

Let’s talk about the proper way to put our C-Stand away now. Most people try to wrestle the legs back into place, but it’s actually a very simple process. Just take the large leg, turn it away from you, loosen, pull it up, turn, pull the other leg up, turn, and tighten the screw. And it’s ready to go on the truck.

So let’s take a look at some of the other C-Stands that Norms makes.

They have 20-inch C-Stands. In the industry people call these “Gary Colemans.” They’re short C-Stands for when you want to get things down low. They also have breakdown C-Stands. Those have what’s called a turtle base. When I loosen the knob the stand comes out. The advantage is ease of storage, the disadvantage is that you don’t get a Rocky Mountain Leg. But they’re great for storing and packing. Norms also has  super C-Stands. These are heavy duty. They’ve got heavier pipes, so heavier risers. They’re made for heavier lights like Kino Flos. They’re basically a beefy C-Stand. If you’re interested in any of these stands go to NormsStudios.Equipment . I have a lot of the basic stands, I love them. We use them all the time. I have short 20-inch stands. We use those frequently as well. I think I even have one turtle stand. I don’t have one of the supers. I need one. Don’t forget to use code “theslantedlens” for 30% off any C-Stands at Norms!

How do you decide which lightweight travel-friendly laptop stand to pick?

Portable and travel-friendly laptop stand with wooden background

Choosing the right laptop stand for your travels is more art than science. It's about finding that perfect balance between what you need and what you can't live without. Here are some factors you definitely need to look into before making that choice:

Portability matters

For people like us who are always on the move, a laptop stand that's as travel-savvy as we are is essential–one that tucks away into your backpack without a second thought. But at the same time, a stand that promises stability and comfort is also non-negotiable. So, since the whole point of purchasing a portable laptop stand is to improve our posture and ultimately feel better, sacrificing a bit of space for a better product does make sense.

Find the perfect fit with adjustability

This factor is fundamental so the first thing you need to do is think about how you like to work . Is a simple elevation enough, or are you constantly searching for the ideal height and angle? We're asking because stands vary widely - some offer basic settings , while others provide a whole range of adjustments to fit your needs. If dialing in your workspace to ergonomic perfection is your goal, opting for a stand that offers more than just a couple of positions could be best for you.

Built to last

Your nomad gear goes through a lot – from the occasional sandstorm in Morocco to the humidity of the Amazon jungle. So, let's be honest, a flimsy stand just won’t cut it. You’re after something that can withstand being tossed into the back of a tuk-tuk or accidentally dropped as you navigate a crowded market. Durability means your stand is ready for as many adventures as you are. So make sure you find something sturdy and built with decent materials.

Invest wisely: price vs value

We're all for saving for that next big destination, but skimping on a laptop stand can cost you more in chiropractor bills down the line. You need to find that sweet spot – a stand that offers the best value without breaking the bank . And the good news is, there are plenty of laptop stands that offer great value for a good price. But whatever the price, just think of it as investing in your health, productivity, and, ultimately, your freedom to work from anywhere.

How to Use and Set Up a Laptop Stand Correctly

Portable and travel-friendly laptop stand on a grey desk

Mastering your new laptop stand doesn't have to be a puzzle, you won't need a crash course on this. But to help you out, let's break it down into simple steps to ensure you're setting up for success, comfort, and productivity , no matter where in the world you are:

Step 1: Elevate for comfort

Finding the ideal height for your laptop is a science-backed strategy to ward off the dreaded tech neck. The sweet spot? Aligning the top third of your screen at eye level. This setup mimics a natural, upright posture, minimizing the strain on your neck and shoulders.

Step 2: Pair with an external keyboard and mouse

Here’s where you transform a simple stand into a full-fledged workstation. Using an external keyboard and mouse when your laptop is elevated isn’t just recommended, it’s crucial for maintaining an ergonomic workflow. This arrangement allows your wrists to stay in a neutral position and your shoulders to relax , reducing the risk of strain. For those constantly on the move, lightweight and compact accessories like the Logitech K380 Keyboard and the Logitech Pebble M350 mouse are lifesavers.

Compare the best keyboards and mice for remote work here:

Step 3: Find your ergonomic sweet spot

Finding your ergonomic sweet spot is a bit like crafting the perfect cup of coffee – it’s highly personal. Your laptop stand should offer the flexibility to experiment with different heights and angles until everything clicks into place. It might take a few tries to get it right, but the aim is to create a setup where you can work for hours without discomfort.

Step 4: Pack it thoughtfully

Just like any gear, traveling with a laptop stand means you have to consider how to protect it on the go. If it's a bit on the delicate side, safeguarding it in transit becomes essential. You could do that by wrapping it in soft clothing or placing it in a padded section of your bag , preventing damage from the jostles and bumps of travel.

Best Laptop Stands: Most Frequently Asked Questions

Are laptop stands worth it for digital nomads.

Absolutely! A good laptop stand dramatically improves your posture, leading to less neck and back pain during long work sessions. This translates to increased productivity and the ability to comfortably work from those less-than-ideal temporary setups that are part of the nomad life.

Can portable laptop stands damage my laptop?

Most reputable laptop stands won't damage your laptop. In fact, many of them actually improve airflow around your laptop, helping it stay cooler under load. Just be sure to choose a stand made from quality materials that's designed to support your laptop's weight.

What's the best height for a laptop stand?

Ideally, you want to adjust the stand so the top third of your laptop screen aligns with your eye level. This encourages a neutral neck position and makes typing with an external keyboard comfortable.

Is there a travel-friendly laptop stand option for larger laptops?

Yes! While some super-compact stands might feel flimsy with heavier laptops, options like the Nulaxy Laptop Stand are designed specifically to handle the extra weight. Look for models that prioritize sturdiness in their design.

Do I have to carry an extra keyboard and mouse with my laptop stand?

While not strictly required, using an external keyboard and mouse with your newly elevated laptop is crucial for maintaining healthy posture and avoiding wrist strain. Luckily, many travel-friendly keyboards and mice are available!

Are laptop stands good for wrists?

A: Laptop stands themselves don't directly support your wrists. However, they position your screen higher, encouraging you to use an external keyboard and mouse. This setup allows for a more neutral wrist position, minimizing strain during long typing sessions.

Are laptop stands really good for posture?

A: Yes! Laptop stands elevate your screen, promoting better posture by minimizing hunching and slouching. This helps prevent the neck, back, and shoulder pain that frequently plagues laptop users.

Do laptop stands help cooling?

Many laptop stands do aid in cooling. By elevating your laptop, they improve airflow around the device, helping it dissipate heat more efficiently.

Amazon Basics light stand, one of the best light stands

1. Amazon Basics Aluminum Light Stand 6.7' twin pack

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Unless you're going for especially moody lighting, chances are you'll need at least two lights for a typical portraiture shoot, which means you'll need two light stands. Thankfully, this pair of stands costs way less than most individual supports from more established brands, yet they'll still reach a versatile 6.7' at max stretch and will each support up to 7lb/3.2kg of gear.

Don't expect advanced features like air-cushioning. But if you're just after a simple but effective pair of  light stands, you can't lose at this price. Note that it's possible to buy these stands individually, but the twin pack will usually work out better value in the long run.

Impact Folding Wheeled Base Stand 8.5', one of the best light stands

2. Impact Folding Wheeled Base Stand 8.5'

When you need to frequently reposition studio lighting, mounting your lights on wheels can be a huge time-saver. This premium stand from respected manufacturer Impact features three individually lockable casters mounted to its legs, which can fold up in seconds to streamline the stand for easy portability.

Max lighting load is a whopping 26.46lb, and has a height range between 42" and 8.5', you'll have no trouble getting the lighting angle you're after. However, weighing in at 12.45kg, this stand is on the heavy side, so is better suited as a studio stand rather than on location work. A larger, 11' model is also available.

Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand, one of the best light stands

3. Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand

One issue with regular light stands is they're not ideal if you want to cast light downward onto your subject, for things like product photography. This Manfrotto stand solves that problem by converting from a regular vertical stand into a boom arm with just a flick of a lever.

Of course, with this kind of setup you do increase the risk of overbalancing the stand when using a heavy light, but Manfrotto has though of this and includes a sandbag counterweight with the stand to keep everything stable. Also, if you stack the boom arm vertically on top of the stand base, you get a conventional vertical light stand that can reach an impressive 12.8' high.

Impact Heavy-Duty Air-Cushioned Light Stand 9.5', one of the best light stands

4. Impact Heavy-Duty Air-Cushioned Light Stand 9.5'

If you want a simple, effective and versatile light stand which doesn't break the bank, then this 9.5-foot Impact stand is ideal. It'll support an impressive 22lb max load, and as the name suggests, it'll reach a towering 9.5 feet at max stretch, opening up plenty of high-angle lighting possibilities.

With its 52-inch-wide footprint it ensures decent stability even with the stand fully extended, while quipped with air cushioning means the vertical stand sections lower gently to protect your gear and your fingers. Up top is a standard 5/8" removable spigot which has 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads for maximum compatibility with various studio items.

Matthews C-Stand Grip Head Kit, one of the best light stands

5. Matthews C-Stand Grip Head Kit

A C-stand stand can be a more heavy-duty lighting support than the typical light stand, while also allowing for extra extended height. The horizontal leg span also making it easier to hang counterbalancing sand bags to increase stability. The downside is, while the legs will rotate to nest flat for storage, you can't get the same cylindrical folded form as a regular light stand.

This premium Matthews offering is a great example of a C-stand, with its maximum 10.5-foot height, making it extra-versatile. It also includes a grip head which allows the top section to be used as a boom arm - great for top-down lighting, or for hanging reflector panels.

Manfrotto 5001B Nano Light Stand, one of the best light stands

6. Manfrotto 5001B Nano Light Stand

Most light stands are designed for studio work, and while often strong and dependable, they can be heavy and bulky as a result. But Manfrotto's Nano stand stands out by having a ultra-portable design which can accompany you even on remote location shoots.

With a max extended height of 6.2', it can go tall enough for most lighting set-ups, yet it's party piece is that it'll pack down to an incredible 19", thanks to its 5-section design. It is made from lightweight aluminium construction which keeps the overall weight down to 2.2lb (1kg). Its max load capacity is a modest 3.31lb (1.5kg), but if you're already travelling light, this isn't a deal-breaker.

Nissin LS-65C Carbon Fibre Light Stand, one of the best light stands

7. Nissin LS-65C Carbon Fibre Light Stand

If your most essential criterion for a light stand is portability, then look no further, as this stand from Nissin, made of the latest carbon fiber materials, is one of the most lightweight and compact light stands on the market. Weighing only 815g/1.8lb and folding down to just 60cm/23.6", with twist lock extensions reaching a lofty height of 2.7m/106.3", this stand is very versatile.

Being made of sturdy carbon fiber also means it is deceptively strong, enabling it to take a weight capacity of up to 3kg/6.6lb, with 1/4” and 3/8” screw thread attachments, you can be sure it will be compatible with any of your favorite lighting solutions and accessories.

Manfrotto 003 Backlight Stand, one of the best light stands

8. Manfrotto 003 Backlight Stand

If you want to use a backdrop behind your portrait sitter, and need to light it accordingly, the last thing you want to see a big light stand and flash head in the back of shot. That's where a backlight stand comes in, as it allows you to position a light far closer to the ground than a normal light stand, so it can be hidden behind furniture or simply low enough to be out of frame.

Backlight stands are simple devices, but this particular stand is from a respected brand and is designed for great stability, while also giving you just enough room to set your desired light angle. It folds flat for compact storage and weighs a mere 2.1lb / 1kg, yet can support up to 15kg.

What is a light stand?

In photography studios, a light stand is a piece of equipment used to support and position various lighting fixtures and accessories, such as studio strobe lights, continuous lights, umbrellas, softboxes and reflectors. Light stands are an essential tool for photographers and videographers to control the direction, intensity, and quality of light in their shots.

How do light stands work?

Light stands are simple devices, similar in design to a regular camera tripod, but with smaller legs to reduce the overall footprint of the stand and therefore reduce the risk of tripping over the stand in a busy studio environment.

To compensate for the smaller legs, the centre column of a light stand is much taller than that of a typical tripod, enabling a light stand to typically reach up to 3 metres tall however, then can go even higher. This kind of height combined with relatively short legs means stability can sometimes be compromised, so light stands are best used with special weighted saddle bags filled with sand, hung over at least one leg to reduce the chance of the stand toppling over if it's supporting a heavy studio light.

How do you attach equipment to a light stand?

A light stand will usually have a 5/8" spigot on the top, which a studio light can clamp on to. Many stands can also come supplied with 3/8" and 1/4"-20 adaptors for mounting flashguns or other studio lighting equipment.

It's not just lights which can be supported by a light stand. Attach a horizontal boom arm to said light stand and you can hang reflectors, diffusers or even small background panels.

Essentially the possibilities are endless. For instance, you could combine two light stands and a large background roll, which can be hung between each stand to form a backdrop for a large group shot.

What are the main types of light stand?

Light stands typically come in three base designs. The standard, tripod-leg set-up is most common. There are also wheeled stands, which make repositioning easier, but are on the more heavier side. Finally, there's the C-stand , which uses an angled leg design for greater rigidity to reduce risk of toppling and can hold a higher load capacity, but at the expense of portability.

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them?

Video Tutorial: What Are C-Stands and How Do You Use Them?

If you’ve spent any time around a professional film set, chances are you’ve seen a c-stand. what are they, and what do they do.

C-stands are a beautiful invention. There aren’t many things on a film set that can’t benefit from a C-stand. Whether it’s holding a sunshade for the director or supporting flags or diffusers — C-stands are the ultimate film set necessity.

While there are many uses for a C-stand, there are quite a few specific, intentional uses for this versatile piece of gear, including their original use (holding reflectors).

In this video, I’ll show you some basic guidelines for working with and getting the most out of C-stands on set.

As you can see, this versatile tool deserves your respect. The C-stand is your friend, and its only limitations depend on your imagination. In many ways, the C-stand is like your filmmaking erector set. Build whatever you want with it.

What’s in the Name?

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — C-Stand

The “C” in C-stand comes from the word “century.”

A Century was a 100″ reflector that bounced light onto film sets in the early days of filmmaking (before big, bright film lights came along). They would put these big reflectors in front of a rotating set and rotate the set as the sun moved across the sky.

In the ’40s, a company called Matthews Studio Equipment  started creating new versions of the C-stand, including the first version with a collapsible base, which made the stands easier to transport.

There are now many companies on the market that have taken this design and come up with additional innovations.

Different Types

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — Rocky Mountain Base

There are many different kinds of C-stands today. The one pictured above, for example, features what we call a Rocky Mountain Base. This means that you can slide the largest leg up and down for steady and reliable use on uneven surfaces like curbs or stairwells.

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — Quick Release

This version from Impact Studio Lighting  includes a quick release for the legs. This, in my opinion, is a bit more user-friendly than the standard leg release model.

The turtle base is another popular type of C-stand. You can remove the main riser and pole from the legs, which allows you to make the C-stand more compact — and to stick smaller stands in the space for additional customization.

Ways to Use A C-Stand

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — Using C-Stands

There are countless ways that you can, and should, use a C-stand. As you can see above, with a baby-pin to clamp adapter, you can throw on a quick bounce board to add some fill lighting to your subject. (You could also create a negative fill or flag with a piece of black cardboard.)

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — Negative Fill

Here, the C-stand functions as a backdrop holder with a roll of 50% gray seamless paper.

This is a quick way to throw up a backdrop. If you have a longer roll of seamless, you can go ahead and throw a second C-stand on the other side.

As you unroll, make sure that you do so evenly, and add a spring clamp to both sides to keep the backdrop still.

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — Backdrop

There are also a number of peripherals available for C-stands. Here, we see a boom pole holder in the grip head for the C-stand.

This makes it very easy to keep a nice and clean studio setup and save your audio team’s arms some trouble.

Video Tutorial: What are C-Stands, and How Do You Use Them? — C-Stand Lights

Here, a C-stand is getting some extra reach out of a backlight. This is a common use of C-stands, as their strength (if used correctly) makes them a secure way to protect your talent from falling lights (as long as you correctly counterweight the big, bottom leg with a sandbag).

The C-stand is an amazing tool, and you need to make sure that you use it appropriately. Get creative with various uses, and you’ll soon see why you need this handy piece of equipment on set.

Abe Lincoln Wax Statue's Head Melts Off, And Of Course There Are Jokes

Honest Abe was no match for a D.C. heat wave.

A six-foot-tall wax replica of the 16th president, created by artist Sandy Williams IV , was installed in February on in Northwest Washington, the Washington Post  reports.

Although Williams told New York Magazine  that the public art piece was always meant to melt, it was installed under shady trees so it could survive the summer, per the Post.

But thanks to the temperature topping 100 degrees  over the weekend, Lincoln’s head got a little too gooey for comfort. So it was removed and stored for safe keeping, with plans to reattach it on Tuesday, the Post reported.

This is the second Lincoln candle Williams has crafted. The first  wax replica had 100 wicks — which were meant to be lit, just not all at once, Williams told New York Magazine. It was installed at the same location in September 2023, but was melted by some wily local residents before its unveiling.

“People found the sculpture without any sort of prompt,” Williams told New York Magazine. “They just noticed it had wicks, then they lit all of the wicks and left it melting for days. So when we came back to have the unveiling, it was already half melted and headless.”

Even before Wax Lincoln No. 2′s head melted off, the statue began to droop backwards, making it appear like the former president was exhausted and slouching back in his seat.

Journalist Kirk A. Bado snapped a shot of Abe in this position and posted it on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday. People quickly started making jokes — and some of them were pretty dirty.

Once the head was removed, people had other cracks to make.

Williams said that the piece was initially intended to draw attention to the Civil War era and its aftermath.

“For this work, we chose Garrison Elementary School because it sits on top of Camp Barker, which was a Civil War-era freedmen’s community that we often don’t learn about,” Williams told New York Magazine. “I think we learned this history that Lincoln freed the slaves, but we aren’t taught what happened to the early freed communities, the injustices of that period of Reconstruction, and the concept of reparations.”

But the artist was  also open to “wherever people take” their interpretations of the piece, because “that is what public artwork is about.”

“My methodology around the work is that I put love into making these projects and present them as a sort of gift to the community. I’m hands-off on the authorship of its form or its reading,” Williams said. “I thought one comment was like, ‘This is me after I get home from work’ or ‘This is me in the Zoom meeting that could have been an email.’ I think it’s funny the way an image can be so viral and have so many different meme interpretations.”
