This page covers

Public transport

Public transport is the best way to travel to Sheffield Children’s Hospital on Western Bank. We are well served by a number of bus services and close to the tram route.

Bus service

  • Use Travel South Yorkshire’s  journey planner tool  to plan your journey from anywhere in the UK to the Western Bank hospital site.
  • Travel South Yorkshire have also published a free  Sheffield Hospital Guide  which lists bus routes serving all Sheffield hospitals.

Tram service

  • Yellow and blue route trams call at the University of Sheffield stop a short walk from the hospital site on Western Bank.
  • The Infirmary Road stop is the closest to Centenary House on both the yellow and blue routes.
  • The blue route service runs to Crystal Peaks close to the Becton Centre.
  • A  tram park and ride scheme  also operates from Nunnery Square and Middlewood.

If you need to reach a site that isn’t covered on this page,  take a look at our website for maps and locations.

Walking to our sites

If you live close enough, walking is a great way to get to appointments if this suits your situation and need – it can be as gentle or high powered as you like!

  • If you live too far away to walk the whole route, there’s bus and tram stops in walking distance of the hospital (Weston Bank, Durham Road, Glossop Road, University), and the mainline Sheffield train station is within walking distance.
  • To plan your walking route to the hospital from other locations including bus/tram stops and the train station, you can use  Google maps  which allows you to search for routes.

Here’s five reasons why you should start walking as much as possible

  • Walking helps prevent diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and depression
  • It also helps with your breathing and lung capacity if you have conditions such as asthma
  • It gives you some time and space to think and prepare for your appointment
  • It gets you in the right frame of mind for the appointment ahead and allows you to decompress afterwards
  • Walking can also lessen your genetic tendency toward obesity. Researchers from Harvard University presented a study in 2012 showing that it’s possible to cut the effects of a genetic predisposition to obesity in half if you walk at a brisk pace for an hour each day.

Find out more about the benefits of walking through the  Walking for Health NHS website.

Cycling to our sites

Sheffield is well known as a green city for our parks and trees, but it would be great if we can become a green city for our travel too! Cycling is a fantastic way to quickly get around if you live too far away from our sites to walk.

  • Travel South Yorkshire

The  Sheffield City Council  website is a great resource for local route planning. There are also lots of well-established cycling groups across the county who will be able to offer advice on the best routes to take.

Bike parking

Cycle parking is available at our sites for patients, families, carers and visitors to use, just make sure you bring along a suitable lock.

Cycle storage locations

  • Western Bank hospital – underground visitors car park – we will be installing signage for this in the turning circle at the main entrance
  • Centenary House – front of building
  • Becton – to the right of reception

Did you know?

Sheffield City Council offer cycling stands, lockers and pumps across the city centre –  take a look at their location map for details.

Cycle route planning

If you need some specific advice on route planning, here’s some useful websites and apps:

  • Cycle Streets  allows you to input your exact start and finish point, giving you options for quieter or quicker routes
  • Open Cycle Network
  • National Cycle Network  is a series of traffic-free paths and quiet roads that connect to every major town and city, including in South Yorkshire. You can also purchase hard copies of regional route maps on the  Sustrans  website .

  • MapMyRide  is another alternative to mapping your upcoming trip.
  • Strava  is very popular with cyclists. Strava heat maps take logged user trips to show the most popular cycling routes, which can be useful when planning your trip.

Park and ride

Park and Ride  gives you a safe, stress free and convenient way to travel in Sheffield. Here are just a few of the reasons to give Park and Ride a go:

  • Safe and secure – with CCTV or friendly staff at most sites, you and your car are in safe hands
  • Avoid traffic congestion – beat the queues during rush hour
  • Save money – this is a cheaper option than comparable town centre parking (including Q Park opposite the Western Bank hospital site) and free at a number of sites, just pay for the cost of your travel
  • Reliable journey times – high frequency services, modern vehicles and traffic priority measures means your journey is quick, easy and reliable
  • Go green – burn less fuel and reduce your carbon emissions by choosing public transport for part of your journey
  • Less stress – sit back and relax! Take the worry out of town centre driving, parking and congestion

Parking near our sites

If you need to drive to our sites,  take a look at our parking page for further details.

Video appointments

Video calls are not the answer for every appointment, but it may be the right choice for your situation. Please remember that the patient must be present and available for the appointment!

Here’s four good reasons to choose a video appointment:

  • You’re socially distanced from others by not attending in person
  • It saves you time and money
  • It’s green friendly – you won’t be contributing to our carbon footprint
  • Calls are completely safe and secure

Choosing to use the bus, tram or train can be a quick and convenient way to get into the city centre. Plan ahead and use the  Travel South Yorkshire  website to find the right service and ticket for you.

Planning ahead also means there may be a ‘better’ time to undertake your journey using public transport, particularly if you would like to travel at a quieter time. Local bus operators, such as First and Stagecoach , have capacity checkers on their apps so you can track where your bus is and see how many seats are available on your next service.

If you are planning on using your car to visit the city centre, have you considered incorporating public transport as part of your journey?

There are eight Park and Ride sites outside Sheffield city centre that offer a convenient way to combine using your car and public transport. And, before you set off on your journey, why not see how much your journey will cost you using this handy little fuel price calculator .

If your journey means that you will use more than one bus operator, or you will also use Supertram or even the train, you may want to have a look at multi-operator tickets that are provided by TravelMaster . Options include tickets for 1 day, 7 day and 28 day travel and there is also a 'Flexi-5' ticket which enables a holder to travel on five separate days in any one month.

Fare information

  • Adult fares for one-way journeys by bus are capped to a maximum £2 . The £2 fare cap has been in place since 1 November 2022,
  • Using Supertram? There's a 10% discount on some tram-only fares until 30 June 2024. The discount applies to 1, 5, 7 and 28-day tickets, purchased onboard the tram or via the new  Travel South Yorkshire app .

Sheffield city centre's Clean Air Zone and changes to traffic permissions along Arundel Gate  ⛅

📖  Information correct at time of publication.

Clean Air Zone (CAZ)

At the end of February 2023, Sheffield City Council introduced a 'class C chargeable zone' for the most polluting heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), light goods vehicles (LGVs), vans, buses, coaches and taxis that drive within the inner ring road and city centre .

Private cars and motorbikes are not subject to any charge.

Further information on the Clean Air Zone is available from the Sheffield City Council website . You can also use this handy vehicle checker to see if your vehicle would be charged for entering the CAZ.

Arundel Gate

A bus gate was introduced on Arundel Gate in March 2023, aiming to reduce the number of vehicles travelling along this stretch of road. The bus gate applies northbound only and restricts traffic from travelling beyond the Novotel Hotel access point, by the Millennium Gallery, when coming from the Furnival Gate direction. Only buses, taxis and other authorised vehicles are able to pass through the bus gate on Arundel Gate without incurring a penalty.

Hospital park-and-ride report completed.

Main image for Hospital park-and-ride report completed

A LONG-AWAITED report which promised to delve into the feasibility of a park-and-ride scheme to serve Barnsley Hospital has been completed - and its findings will be revealed to the public.

The probe was first spearheaded by Peter Fielding, an ex-councillor who served the Dodworth ward, who said its creation would ease congestion around the notorious traffic snagpoint and improve air quality.

Peter, who chaired a task and finish group into air quality two years ago before his retirement, said: “The hospital site only has capacity for parking for about half of its staff.

“There is insufficient capacity to cope with patient and visitor parking demand, hence why Gawber Road and Pogmoor Road and are regularly congested.

“I still think a park-and-ride scheme would be successful, especially if it’s linked to the work on land known as MU1.

“A piece of land could be identified there and we could perhaps provide a priority access route to the hospital, which would be an excellent way of getting people quickly to the hospital by parking at Capitol Park at Dodworth or the MU1 site.

“If we can provide those residents with a park and ride scheme that not just goes to the hospital but then goes on to the town centre, I think that will be an excellent opportunity.

“The problems continue, as they have for years, because unfortunately the site’s completely landlocked and can only build up, not out, due to having no space.

“Congestion and on-street parking around the hospital are both terrible and must be infuriating for those who live around the site.”

Peter’s son, Coun Will Fielding, took on the mantle and was given an update from the council.

Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said the study is currently going through the council’s ‘internal governance process’.

The Chronicle understands it will be scheduled to be discussed at a cabinet meeting this year with findings and considerations, before it makes its way to full council if it’s deemed a feasible proposition.

“We will then be in a position to release the report, and any actions that arise from it, to members and the wider public,” Coun Higginbottom added.

“We don’t have a concrete timeframe but it will go through the normal process to cabinet.”

The council agreed to undertake a feasibility study in July 2022 - and Coun Higginbottom said the investigation was ‘taking longer than expected’.

“The consultants have had to undertake a lot of data gathering both with the council and the hospital, which is time-consuming.

“We appreciate it has taken longer than anticipated but where information has not been available, the consultants have had to do the necessary data capture to ensure the study is robust.”

Southsea Common weekend Park and Ride service to return for the summer - here is when

Portsmouth City Council have announced that a popular Park and Ride route will be returning this summer.

The Southsea Park and Ride weekend service will be returning from Saturday, June 29 until Sunday, September 1. With a number of big events taking place on Southsea Common over the summer, including Victorious Festival and Race for Life events, this will be welcome news for visitors commuting into the city.

In addition to the announced weekend trips to Southsea Common, additional services will also be put on for Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 8 with buses running every 15 minutes.

The Park and Ride facility can be found off Junction 1 of the M275 with buses running to Southsea every 30 minutes on a normal weekend. The first bus departs at 9.35am with the last bus leaving the D-Day Story bus stop at 7.35pm. The car park opens 30 minutes before the first bus and closes 30 minutes after the last bus returns. Services will be increased for the Kite Festival on July 27 and 28 with buses running every 15 minutes.

Tickets cost £4 for up to five people in a vehicle which provides you with unlimited travel on the bus throughout the day. Frequent users of the Park & Ride service can also benefit from cheaper flexi pass tickets that cost as little as £2 a day.

Cllr Peter Candlish, cabinet member for transport, said: "The Park and Ride service offers visitors a seamless way to enjoy Southsea's vibrant events, attractions, and beautiful seafront without the hassle of traffic and parking. By choosing this convenient travel option, visitors not only save time but also contribute to reducing air pollution and easing congestion in our city."

Tickets can be purchased via ticket machines at the Park and Ride facility or via the Ringo App by selecting car park 1398. The Southsea route will be running alongside the usual daily service which goes to the Hard Interchange and city centre.

Further information on the service and schedule can be found on the Portsmouth City Council website.
