Michael Schlossberg sugarcoats the truth.
By Sam Corbin
Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues
WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — Over the centuries, English speakers have come up with several creative ways of avoiding vulgarity. Minced oaths are euphemistically rendered expressions of profanity or obscenity that gained popularity among playwrights of the Elizabethan era. Bowdlerization began a few hundred years later, when a well-meaning couple sought to make Shakespeare more family-friendly. And today, the teens use algospeak to avoid censors on TikTok, often using emojis in place of words.
While I cannot confirm that Michael Schlossberg constructed today’s crossword with any of those strategies in mind, I can tell you that solving his puzzle will give you a particularly creative way to express your delight about what lies inside the grid.
Today’s Theme
I can honestly say that I let out a “Little laugh” (53D) when I entered the revealer of Mr. Schlossberg’s puzzle (though mine sounded a little more like a “hehe” than a TEHEE).
“What you might cry upon recognizing this puzzle’s ingredient list?” (62A) requires first solving the entries with gray-shaded squares: 17A, 20A, 32A, 42A and 54A. These yield a recipe of MILK SOP, COCOA BEACH, BUTTER FINGERS, SUGAR SNAP PEAS and VANILLA ICE.
When mixed together, the terms in bold elicit a delicious confection that doubles as an interjection — OH, FUDGE!
Tricky Clues
1A. “Waterproof overshoes” make their debut in the New York Times Crossword: ARCTICS is a generalized — albeit rarely used — term for rubberized boot coverings.
14A. Given the question mark in “Superconductor?,” we can assume it isn’t referring to a vehicle for an electrical current. This is a MAESTRO, who conducts superbly.
18A. The term TSARINA may have been used to describe “Catherine the Great” in one of two ways : as the wife of Czar (or Tsar) Peter III during his brief rule, or as the absolute empress of Russia after she had staged a coup and acceded to the throne herself.
37A. The sneaky “Capital of Georgia?” refers to the state’s (or country’s) capitalized first letter, phonetically written: GEE.
16D. The entry for “Antebellum” doubles as the name for a certain coveted apartment type in New York City: PREWAR. In this second case, however, the term refers to apartments constructed before World War II. “Antebellum” is generally used to indicate the era before the U.S. Civil War.
44D. Italian endings are my NEMESES (69A) in every puzzle. “Songs for one” asks us for plural version of a solo, and here, it’s SOLI.

What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle
- SIDE (65A: "The Other ___" (Jacqueline Woodson picture book)) As I did the last time I wrote about Jacqueline Woodson , I recommend taking a few moments to read the bio on her website , where she muses about going from telling lies as a child to writing lies on the page. Although I am familiar with some of Jacqueline Woodson's work, her 2012 picture book, The Other SIDE , is new to me, and I am happy to learn about it. The book tells the story of two girls, Clover and Annie, who become friends in a small, segregated rural town.
- TROLL (31D: Geller Cup doll, in "Friends") Nearly everything I know about the show Friends , I have learned by listening in from the other room while my daughter watched it, or from crosswords. Therefore, I had to rely on crossing answers here. The Geller Cup was featured in a third season episode of Friends , titled "The One With The Football." In the episode, which occurs on Thanksgiving Day, Monica and Ross reveal that when they were kids they played football on Thanksgiving and competed for a homemade trophy – a TROLL doll on a stand – that they referred to as the Geller Cup .
- MOSAICS (40D: Some tile-based works by the street artist Invader) Invader is the pseudonym of a French artist known for his street art that depicts pixelated video game characters using tile MOSAICS. Invader's art is displayed on bridges, tunnels, sidewalks, fountains, bus stops, etc. in various cities around the world, including Paris, France; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and New York City in the United States. Invader also creates MOSAICS using Rubik cubes .
- RAIN (56D: "Mouths of ___" (essay collection by queer Black writers)) Mouths of RAIN: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Thought includes writings by Audre Lorde, Alice Walker, Bettina Love, and others. The anthology, edited by Briona Simone Jones, was published in 2021, and includes essays, poetry, short fiction, and recollections written from 1909 to 2019.
Random Thoughts & Interesting Things
- DOSA (1A: Pancake often served with sambar) A DOSA is a thin pancake in South Indian cuisine made from a fermented batter of lentils and rice. Sambar is a lentil-based vegetable curry.
- LIMA (5A: Peru's capital) and OSLO (Norway's capital) It's always fun to get a little review of world capitals with the crossword.
- MAGMA (19A: Molten rock) When molten rock is underground, it is referred to as MAGMA. Once molten rock breaks through the Earth's surface – spewed out of a volcano, say – it is known as lava.
- AS I (21A: "Take Me ___ Am" (Mary J. Blige song)) "Take Me AS I Am" is a 2006 song by Mary J. Blige from her album, The Breakthrough .
- ANO (27A: Year, in Portuguese) I have previously written about why ANO is clued in reference to Portuguese rather than Spanish.
- KITTEN HEELS (30A: Short stilettos popularized by Audrey Hepburn) KITTEN HEELS are generally less than two inches in height. It was the 1960s when Audrey Hepburn popularized the style. We have seen KITTEN HEELS as a theme answer previously in a puzzle with a similar type of theme.
- MEMBER (35A: Sweden is NATO's newest one) The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance established with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949. Including Sweden, which joined NATO on March 7 of this year, NATO is comprised of 32 MEMBER states.
- BREED (39A: Produce offspring) and LACED (33D: Like some "big kid" shoes) These two answers feel like theme-adjacent bonuses, with their references to producing offspring (i.e. kids) and shoes for a "big kid."
- MOS (40A: Jan. and Sept.) The abbreviation of January and September in the clue alerts solvers that the answer will be an abbreviation. Any two months (MOS) would have worked in this clue. As constructors, how do you choose which months to use? I happen to have a little bit of inside information here, and know that Jasmeet and Amie's birthdays are in January and September, which is fun.
- RYAN GOSLING (45A: Margot Robbie's "Barbie" co-star) In the 2023 movie, Barbie , directed by Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie portrays the title character, and RYAN GOSLING plays the role of Ken.
- IRL (55A: "Not online", online) IRL stands for "in real life."
- LIME (67A: Green fruit) and ACAI (53D: Purple berry) These two clues have me imagining a crossword full of food items that are all clued in reference to their color, which makes me chuckle.
- LIU (5D: Connections editor Wyna) This clue made me so happy! Connections is a New York Times ( NYT ) game that consists of 16 words that must be sorted into four categories of four. (For fans of the British game show, Only Connect , it is reminiscent of the Connecting Wall round.) The game is edited by Wyna LIU , who is an associate puzzle editor at NYT, and an assistant editor at the American Values Club Crossword (AVCX) . Wyna LIU is, in my opinion, a lovely person who definitely deserves a shoutout in the crossword puzzle.
- ANY IDEAS (8D: "Do you have any suggestions?") and HEAR ME OUT (10D: "Before you say no...") These two answers could be a conversation between crossword collaborators. How do I know? BEEN THERE (36D: "I know what that's like").
- SEAS (13D: Ariel and her sisters rule over seven, in 2023's "The Little Mermaid") In the 2023 live-action version of The Little Mermaid , Ariel and her sisters, whose names are Perla, Indira, Karina, Caspia, Mala, and Tamika, represent the seven SEAS.
- OMEGA (29D: Last Greek letter) Time for a review of the Greek alphabet. Made up of 24 letters, the Greek alphabet begins with the letters alpha, beta, gamma, and ends with the letters, chi, psi, OMEGA.
- EVITA (32D: Musical set in Argentina) The 1978 musical, EVITA , is based on a 1976 concept album of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. EVITA tells the story of the life of Eva Perón, whose nickname was EVITA. Eva Perón was the first lady of Argentina from 1946-1952.
- SNAPS (51D: Poetry slam sounds) A poetry slam is a spoken word competition in which poets perform before a live audience and judges. SNAPS are used as a way to show appreciation at poetry slams, as SNAPS are less likely to distract the performer than other means of showing appreciation such as clapping.
- BALL (52D: ___ culture ("Pose" subject)) Pose is a TV series that originally aired from 2018-2021. The show centers on the Black and Latino LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming drag BALL culture of the 1980s and 1990s.
Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis
- HUSH PUPPY (17A: Deep-fried cornmeal snack)
- KITTEN HEELS (30A: Short stilettos popularized by Audrey Hepburn)
- RYAN GOSLING (45A: Margot Robbie's "Barbie" co-star)
- CALF RAISE (62D: Lower leg exercise)
At the SIDE of each theme answer is found a term used for a young animal, that is a KID. Our KIDs at the SIDE are PUPPY (dog), KITTEN (cat), GOSLING (goose), and CALF (cow).
What's not to like about a theme about baby animals? I appreciate that the theme answers alternate between the "KID" appearing on the right and left SIDE of the answer. And, of course, I am a fan of the PUPPY photos Jasmeet and Amie have shared with us. In honor of the theme, I'm sharing a photo of my cat, Willow, as a KITTEN. Thank you, Amie and Jasmeet, for this amazing puzzle.

Column: How many ways can a political memoir backfire? Ask Kristi Noem
- Show more sharing options
- Copy Link URL Copied!
Not to beat a dead, ah, horse, but how can we ignore the spectacle that South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has made of herself during her publicity tour for her just-published memoir, “No Going Back?”
Over the weekend, she sparred with Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation,” when Brennan asked her to reflect on the wisdom of including anecdotes about killing her dog and goat, and some other egregious stories in the book.
Opinion Columnist
Robin Abcarian
Rather than answer simple questions about her judgment and memory, Noem proved to be a master of the kind of nonsensical pivoting segue that plagues politicians’ — especially Republican politicians’ — interviews these days. Allow me to paraphrase, but only barely:
Q: Do you regret writing about killing your dog Cricket?
A: Why is Joe Biden’s Secret Service agent-eating dog Commander still alive?
Q: Why’d you lie about meeting Kim Jong Un?
A: None of your beeswax!
But the receipts, as they say, are there.
Abcarian: The women of Trump’s GOP try to answer the question, Who’s the most macho?
To be as tough as the guys, Republicans Kristi Noem shot her dog, Joni Ernst castrated hogs, Sarah Palin advocated shooting wolves from the air.
May 1, 2024
Or at least they were. In the embargoed copy of her memoir that the Guardian obtained , Noem was quoted as having written, “I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor, after all).”
There is so much wrong with that passage, and not even because it never happened.
Pretending that a global villain like Kim would give a second thought to an obscure American congresswoman is narcissism at its most delusional. But to throw her own pastoral ducklings under the bus by comparing them to a murderous dictator? That’s harsh. (Not puppy-killing harsh, but still.)
Noem was in Congress from 2011 to 2019. As South Dakota’s only representative in the House and a member of the Armed Services Committee, Noem of course traveled widely and came into contact with many world leaders. She writes about meeting, or being present at events with, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, England’s Boris Johnson and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni. She approvingly cites the reelection of Hungarian strongman Viktor Orban.
Abcarian: Should you sleep with your pet? It depends
A shocking amount of scientific research has been done on whether people and their pets should sleep together.
Feb. 4, 2024
On Tuesday, when “No Going Back” became officially available, I downloaded it on my Kindle. Noem’s face-to-face Kim Jong Un fantasy was nowhere to be found.
That Kim anecdote, however, is not the only one Noem has been accused of making up.
Other challenged tales include her assertion that she canceled a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in 2023 after he said something she considered to be anti-Israel and pro-Hamas, and her report of what she called a “threatening” phone call during the pandemic from former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, then contemplating a run for president.
Macron’s office told the Associated Press that Noem had never been invited to meet him, although, it conceded, it was possible they’d been scheduled to attend the same event in Paris.
As for the call with Haley, writes Noem: “It was clear she wanted me to know that there was only room for one Republican woman in the spotlight. It was weird.”
Haley’s representative disputed Noem’s account, telling Politico that Haley, a former governor herself, had called Noem to offer support during the pandemic. “How she would twist that into a threat,” said Haley spokesman Chaney Denton, “is just plain weird.”
Calmes: Kristi Noem executed her dog. That’s not the main reason she’d be a lousy vice president
Trump’s short list of vice presidential candidates self-disqualify when they second his falsehoods about the 2020 election and Jan. 6.
May 2, 2024
Sunday, Noem doubled down . “That story is absolutely true,” she told the hosts of “CBS Mornings.” “She’s a typical politician who says whatever she needs to on any given day to benefit herself.”
In a book full of puffed-up stories about her immense if imaginary courage, think of the real courage it would have taken to just suck it up and say, “I am sorry. I guess I got a little carried away.”
Instead, her spokesman, Ian Fury, essentially blamed Noem’s ghostwriter for the made-up incident with North Korea’s supreme leader. “Kim Jong Un was included in a list of world leaders and shouldn’t have been,” Fury told the Dakota Scout. “This has been communicated to the ghostwriter and editor.”
That non-responsive excuse is right up there with the classic obfuscation “mistakes were made.” Ironically, in her memoir’s acknowledgments, Noem writes, “Shout out to Ian for keeping me honest.” Heckuva job, Ian!
Opinion: When a dog bites, it’s probably because you weren’t paying attention
Bites are sending record numbers of Californians to the ER. Here’s how to prevent that from happening to you.
March 12, 2024
Instead of admitting she screwed up, as one wag put it on social media, Noem scapeghosted.
So who is the ghostwriter?
From the memoir acknowledgments, it appears that he is Mike Loomis , whom Noem describes as “a crazy guy” who “even scolded me once for not being prepared on having material written!” (Snark alert: You can see from that phrase why she needed writing assistance.)
Loomis is an experienced hand who has ghostwritten at least a dozen memoirs, including one by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. I reached out to him via his website but have not received a reply. Poor guy is probably being inundated by requests for comments.
On Monday, the day after her disastrous “Face the Nation” appearance, Noem was grilled by Elizabeth Vargas on the NewsNation network. Fortunately for Noem, her story about Cricket is no longer the big news. Unfortunately for Noem, interest now centers on whether she lied about staring down Kim Jong Un.
“When this was pointed out, we made an adjustment,” she told Vargas. “That name should not be in the book and I am not going to discuss those personal meetings.”
“But clearly if you’ve taken it out of the book, it’s because it’s untrue,” said Vargas.
“I’ve given you my answer,” said Noem, “and no, that’s not the answer.”
“You recorded the audio book, you read this whole book out loud, why didn’t you take it out then?” Vargas pressed.
“Did you want to talk about something else today?” Noem asked.
“We’re just trying to get a straight answer,” Vargas replied.
“You did,” said Noem, “and I mean, I took responsibility for it. The buck stops with me.”
