Getting to Old Trafford

Getting here, car, bike or taxi.

Travelling by Car

Roads around Old Trafford and the surrounding areas – including the local motorway network – are extremely busy on match days. Please plan your route to the stadium in advance and allow more time than usual for your journey. If you are travelling to the stadium by car on matchday, you can use the post code M16 0RA, and on a non matchday, use M17 1FP. To book Official Car Parking, visit www.manutd.com/tickets

Non Matchday:  Visitors travelling to the stadium should use car park E2 only, which can be accessed from Wharfside Way West. Accessible parking spaces are available on this car park.

Matchday: Access to car parks E1 & E2 can only be gained via Wharfside Way with the relevant permits. Anyone attempting to access via Chester Road will be directed around the traffic system which will cause further delays. Where acting upon Police instructions, supporters parking on E1 & E2 may be held back after the game and we apologise for any such delays.

When parking with us at the stadium, please ensure that you follow the below instructions.

  • Follow the directions given by our Stewards
  • On car parks with marked bays, please park between the lines
  • Do not park in any hatched or restricted areas
  • Adhere to our car park speed limit of 10 mph
  • Allow yourself additional time for searches and ticket checks if you are parking on match days
  • Please be patient and expect delays to your entry or exit at busy periods
  • Be aware of pedestrians and cyclists

Travelling by Bike

If you are travelling to Old Trafford by bicycle, there are free cycle racks located at the following car parks:

- N2 (Sir Alex Ferguson Stand) - E2 (East Stand) - W2 (West Stand)

Please note, you will need to use your own bike lock

Bicycles must not be secured in any other areas across the stadium site at any time. Bicycles secured outside of authorised cycle racks will be promptly removed, which may result in damage for which the club will not be held liable.

How to get to Old Trafford Stadium

The closest train station to Old Trafford is Manchester Piccadilly , which is roughly 30 minutes away. The easiest way to get to the stadium from the station is on the blue Metro line to the Old Trafford stop, from which it’s just a short walk to the stadium.

There are free bicycle racks at Old Trafford if you want to cycle to the stadium. It’s also possible to drive, but bear in mind that the roads in the area get very busy on match days, so getting to Old Trafford is usually faster and less stressful when you take public transport.

What to do at Old Trafford Stadium

Old Trafford is the home of Manchester United Football Club and plays host to the club’s home games against both Premier League and UEFA Champions Cup teams. The stadium has also played host to an FA Cup final and semi-finals, as well as England games and the 2003 Champions League Final. It also hosts the annual rugby league Super League Grand Final - so even if you’re not a football fan, there’s still plenty of sporting events for you to enjoy at Old Trafford.

About Old Trafford Stadium

Old Trafford was officially opened on 19th February 1910 with a football match between Manchester United and Liverpool, with MUFC losing by one goal. The stadium was originally called United Football Ground but was renamed Old Trafford in 1936. Old Trafford was suffered from extensive bomb damage during World War Two, during which time the club shared premises with their rivals Manchester City.

With a capacity of 74,140 seats, the “Theatre of Dreams” as it’s known, is the largest club football stadium in the UK - and the second-largest stadium overall, behind Wembley in London. If you want to experience world-class football in a fantastic crowd, it’s easy to get to the nearest Old Trafford train station, Manchester Piccadilly, when you travel with Avanti West Coast.

Concerts at Old Trafford Stadium

As the biggest football stadium in the UK, Old Trafford has also been one of the greatest outdoor music venues to grace the Manchester skyline. While it’s been a couple of years since concerts at Old Trafford were held, this stadium has played host to some incredible artists over the years, including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Status Quo, Rod Stewart, Madness and the Rolling Stones.

Like most places in Manchester, the extensive Metro network makes getting to concerts at Old Trafford easy, with lines running up to midnight every day to ensure you get back to your home or accommodation safely. If you’re travelling from outside the city, Manchester Piccadilly is the closest train station. It’ll take you around 30 minutes to get to the stadium from here unless you hop on the Metro or jump in a taxi.

Old Trafford Stadium Tours

Any football fan knows the significance of Old Trafford and the success achieved by Manchester United over the decades, which is why this stadium makes for such a great tour opportunity. Whether you’re headed to Manchester for a day out or visiting for the weekend, an Old Trafford Stadium tour should definitely be on your list.

At Avanti, we ensure you make the most of your trips to some of the UK’s greatest cities. Once you’ve booked your tour of Old Trafford Stadium, you have 12 months to visit, giving you optimal flexibility when it comes to booking your trip. And when you’ve decided on a date, it’s super easy to get to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, with Manchester’s extensive Metro network taking you from the city centre right to the stadium.

travelling to old trafford by train

hi! i know this question has probably been asked a couple of times, but i just want to make sure. pardon me as this is my first time traveling to uk. i will be going to old trafford to watch a match this october/november. i want to ask 5 questions:

2. considering i am carrying my luggage, i know my time will be very tight. but if i stay very near to the stadium, probably taking about 10-15 mins walk to reach the stadium, will i still be able to make it in time for the match?

3. what is the likelihood of getting a taxi at the airport at that time (1pm) considering it is like about an hour just before the match? will it be very crowded with people/fans?

4. what is the weather like during that time? does it rain very often?

5. i know this is very difficult to answer, but what are the chances that i am able to get tickets through general sales to the match?

The fixtures were announced a couple of days ago and I don't why you think a particular match will start at 2:00pm - games normally start at 3:00pm but may be moved for TV purposes

So the answer is that no-one has a clue if you'll make it in time. Same applies to every other question as we don't even know which game you are considering

travelling to old trafford by train

May I suggest that you check the united website and decide which game you want to see and then start trying to get a ticket. Then allow a few hours after landing to get to your hotel and after that the game.

travelling to old trafford by train

For your ET question - have you tried googling " time now in England" ?!!!

The clocks go back the day after, so the time you see there will be the correct difference.

i take that as eastern standard time, converted to GMT is 3 pm in london. that makes it 2 hours for transit to the hotel. i was thinking to get a hotel extremely nearby within 2 km and just leave the luggages at the hotel before making it to the stadium. am i being realistic here?

travelling to old trafford by train

Bear in mind there is a possibility of the date of that match being changed; and the kick-off time is still TBC.

If you wish to guarantee a ticket now, you will have to purchase a Hospitality/VIP ticket from ManU; they are already on sale but are very expensive.

The 6-8 weeks timescale you mention is only for existing members to purchase tickets (possibly in a ballot, but a ballot is less likely for Stoke match). Any remaining tickets would go on open sale to general public only much nearer the match date.

I recommend you read through the many historical threads here on TA Manchester forum about ManU tickets and you will gain good advice on what options / constraints apply.

Whatever, I would fly in at least the day before the match.

At the moment it is all guess work. There is a possibility that the kick off could be before 3pm on a Saturday, at maybe 12.45pm.

I would post again when the fixture has been confirmed and it has an actual kick off time and day the match is being played. The advice given will then be concrete information and more useful to you.

There are trains every few minutes for the 20 minute journey from the airport station to Manchester Piccadilly Station in the city centre. The city centre is quite compact, so you are never far from a tram station for the 20 minute trip to Old Trafford. Free Metroshuttle buses, covering the city centre, operate from the front of Piccadilly Station.

If you prefer to stay within walking distance of the stadium, look at the hotels on Salford Quays. An Eccles tram from Piccadilly Station will get you there.

Come back to us when you firm up your plans.

There are any number of reasons the match time could be altered, so IMO it would be foolish to fly in on the same day as the match, because of potential delay arriving, flight time changes, need to get to hotel, etc etc.
