Gold Cap Shrooms Guide: Spores, Effects, Identification

If you’ve recently tripped on psilocybin mushrooms , there’s a good chance they were from one of the many strains of gold cap mushrooms. Also known commonly as cubes, boomers, and gold tops, gold caps are the most commonly cultivated psilocybin-containing mushroom. Their popularity is due to the fact that growers widely regard gold caps as the easiest species to cultivate. This is because they grow well in a variety of suboptimal conditions that don’t perfectly emulate the conditions they prefer in the wild. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at this well-known species of psilocybin-containing mushroom, including its effects, how it’s identified, and where it grows.

What are Gold Cap Shrooms?

“Gold cap” is one of several common names for Psilocybe cubensis . Of the more than 150 species of Psilocybe mushrooms, P. cubensis is the largest of its genus. It’s also the most well well-known and grown; hence its nickname as the commercial Psilocybe . The genus name derives from Greek and literally translates to “bare head,” an accurate reflection of its cap’s appearance.

P. cubensis was first discovered in Cuba by the American mycologist F.S. Earle at the turn of the 20th century. The species name, cubensis , reflects this history, literally meaning “coming from Cuba.” At the time, the species was classified as part of the Stropharia genus. However, mycologists later reclassified it into the broader Psilocybe genus. Historians believe that Spaniards first brought P. cubensis to America along with their cattle during their 16th-century missionary expeditions. Curanderos (shamans) preferred using other Psilocybe species, such as P. mexicana and P. aztecorum , in their ceremonies.

How Do You Identify Psilocybe Cubensis ?

Gold cap mushrooms are easy to recognize from their large size, deep golden color, and tendency to bruise blue with age or when injured. 

When gold cap shrooms are young, the caps start out bulbous and convex, maturing to be flat and wide (roughly 1.5–8 cm in diameter). The young caps are a reddish cinnamon-brown, lightening with age to a light golden brown. They have a darker golden hue in the middle and a light whitish ring around the margin. A raised area called the umbo often tops the center of the cap. The closely-spaced gills (which disperse the spores) are initially a pale white, then become deep purplish gray to black with age. The spores themselves form a dark purple-brown-to-black spore print . 

The stem of a gold cap ranges from 4–15 cm in length. It tends to be thicker toward the base of the fruiting body. It’s off-white to yellowish in color and can be hollow or meaty, depending on growing conditions. Attached to the stem is a white membranous annulus. The annulus is a ring-like remnant of the partial veil that covers the gills when the mushroom is young. Both the annulus and stem bruise a bluish color when injured. This is due to the oxidation of psilocin content in the mushroom. 

Effects of Gold Cap Mushrooms

Gold cap shrooms are a potent entheogen capable of generating life-transforming, mystical experiences. In his book True Hallucinations , Terence McKenna states that P. cubensis is “multifaceted and benevolent, as complex as mescaline, as intense as LSD—the mushroom, as is said of peyote, teaches the right way to live.”

Generally, the psilocybin experience produces:

• Open and closed eye visuals
• Time distortion
• Altered thinking and perspective
• Profound spiritual experiences (such as feelings of unity) 

The effects of gold cap shrooms typically come on within 1–2 hours and last 4–6 hours. A common dose for gold caps to bring on mystical-type experiences is around 1–3 grams of dried mushroom. In addition, you can microdose gold cap shrooms to improve mood, productivity, and overall well-being. They are microdosed at doses ranging from 0.10–0.25 grams of dried mushroom. 

On the other hand, a heroic dose of 5 or more grams, especially in complete darkness, produces an intense and ineffable shamanic experience. This experience is characterized by elaborate visuals, transdimensional entity contact, and complete ego death . As with all psychedelics, the effects are heavily contingent on set and setting . This is especially true when it comes to heavy doses.

Potency Considerations

The major psychoactive compounds present in gold cap shrooms are psilocin and psilocybin. To a lesser extent, they also contain the alkaloids baeocystin and norbaeocystin. According to a 2003 study of six P. cubensis samples, the psilocin content ranges from 0.14–0.42% in the whole mushroom, while the psilocybin content ranges from 0.37–1.30%. Psilocin is the primary psychoactive component responsible for the effects of gold caps. Psilocybin is the inactive prodrug of psilocin.

An earlier study by Bigwood and Beug found that the psilocybin potency in cultivated P. cubensis can vary by a factor of four. Wild P. cubensis , on the other hand, shows a tenfold range in potency. In addition to age, several factors relating to growing condition can account for the variations in potency. These include temperature, humidity, presence (or absence) of UV light, and the number of fruitings. Interestingly, the abovementioned authors found that psilocin content increased with each subsequent flush (harvest), reaching a maximum by the 4th flush. 

Another consideration to factor in is the genetics of the particular gold cap strain. There are over 40 marketed P. cubensis strains, most of which carry the name of their origins, e.g. Amazonian, Ecuadorian, Palenque, and Thai strains. In regard to potency variations, for the most part, growers hold to the motto that a “cube is a cube.” One exception is the notoriously potent Penis Envy strain , named for its unmistakably phallic appearance.

Where to Find Gold Cap Mushrooms

You can find gold cap mushrooms in tropical and subtropical climates, especially in pastures and humid grasslands. Around the world you can find them growing in the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Central America, and South America. You can also find them in parts of Australia (Queensland and New South Wales) and a handful of countries in Asia. In the United States, they grow in southeastern states, particularly in warm-weathered cattle fields where humidity stays above 85%. They most frequently grow in May or June but will grow until January.

The global distribution of gold caps intimately relates to the worldwide cattle ranching industry. In the wild, gold caps colonize the dung of grazing herbivores such as cows, horses, and goats. On manure, they will either grow alone or in small clustered groups.

As mentioned, gold cap shrooms are the most popular species for indoor cultivation. They rose to prominence after Dennis and Terence McKenna published Psilocybin: The Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide in 1976. Gold cap shrooms grow optimally at near 100% humidity, and at temperatures between 75–81°F. The most popular methods of cultivation are the small-scale “cake methods,” such as the PF Tek method. This method is highly recommended for beginner growers. It involves a brown rice flour/vermiculite mixture and takes just 5–6 weeks in total, starting from the mushroom spores.

If you’ve ever seen representations of magic mushrooms in pop culture—in a movie, on TV, or in a painting—it was most likely a golden cap shroom. The golden cap shroom, more commonly known as Psilocybe cubensis , is the most common psychedelic mushroom species. One of the main reasons for this is it’s fairly simple to grow, especially for first-timers without a lot of experience cultivating mushrooms . 

History of the Golden Cap Shroom

The first scientific record of golden cap shrooms—also known as gold cap shrooms, golden tops, cubes, cubies, boomers, or gold caps—was in 1906 by Franklin Sumner Earle in Cuba . ( Cubensis actually means “coming from Cuba” in Latin.) At the time, the mycologist from Chicago called it Stropharia cubensis. A year later, it was identified by French pharmacist and mycologist Narcisse Théophile Patouillard in northern Vietnam.

Where does the Gold Cap Shroom Grow? 

Golden cap shrooms are a dung-loving species which often colonizes the dung of plant-eating animals, such as cows and goats. They grow in tropical and subtropical environments, including the United States, Central and South America, the West Indies, and Mexico. They can also be grown relatively easily at home, in a sterile environment that’s around 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a setup that costs a few hundred dollars or less. 

Golden Cap Shroom Characteristics

Golden cap shrooms are the largest of all psychedelic mushrooms. They’re known as “golden cap shrooms” or “gold cap shrooms” simply because their caps are often a light golden color. Their umbrella-shaped caps are also often a darker brown in the middle and have a white ring around the perimeter. They can range from about 1.5 to eight centimeters; they’re also smooth and bruise a navy blue color, which is one way they’re identified by foragers.

Psychoactive Compounds in Gold Cap Shrooms

Psilocybe cubensis doesn’t just contain psilocybin, although that is the main psychedelic compound in the fungus. Indeed, these mushrooms contain a host of other psychoactive molecules, including psilocin, baeocystin, and norbaeocystin. The symbiotic interplay of these compounds, and others contained within the mushroom, contribute to its psychotropic effects. For this reason, similar to the “entourage effect” well known in the cannabis world, the experience of taking a whole mushroom, as opposed to synthetic psilocybin isolate (such as what’s used in clinical trials) can be significant.

In the United States, psilocybin spores are legal in all but three states: California, Idaho, and Georgia. How Many Gold Caps Should I Eat? 

Well, that really depends on your level of experience tripping and how deep you’re trying to go. About one to three grams of dried golden cap mushrooms is considered a moderate dose and four to seven grams is considered a heftier or “heroic” dose. That said, every trip is different and every person is different. It’s best, if you don’t have a lot of experience, to begin with a smaller dose, and wait a couple of hours, before taking more. It’s also highly recommended that you have a trip sitter (i.e. someone, ideally with psychedelic experience, who can hold space for you and support you). The best way to determine how much you’re consuming is to weigh your dried mushrooms with a little scale. Especially if you’re tripping in hopes of seeking healing, you might consider going to a vetted, legal retreat center. The whole experience should last around six to eight hours. 

How Are Gold Cap Shrooms Consumed? 

Most often, psychedelic mushrooms are eaten whole (or added to something like peanut butter and jelly), or steeped in tea—in which case, the consumer would simply drink the tea and discard the wet mushroom material. In other cases, one may grind the mushrooms into a powder and put them into capsules. In recent days, mushroom chocolates have also become popular, as well as cooking with psilocybin .

What Are Gold Cap Mushrooms?

Gold Caps mushrooms, also called Gold Tops, Cap Golds, and similar iterations of the name, are a strain of the Psilocybe cubensis mushroom . These shrooms are the largest species among magic mushrooms.

This species of psilocybin mushrooms is known for its physical characteristics and effects.

Physically, exquisite gold tops, which have the lightest colors in the middle of the caps and a darker brown ring around the edges of the tops. The caps are also a lighter color than the darker brown stems, which are slim and graceful.

Psilocybe cubensis , sometimes simply called cubies, is a form of fungus with a fairly large range around the world, particularly in the Western Hemisphere. Golden cubes as well as other varieties of fungi tend to grow in and around the dung of cows and goats in Cuba, Mexico, and other countries in Central America, stretching down through much of South America.

Golden Teachers  are the most widely recognized and commonly cultivated strain of magic mushrooms. Just like the Australian magic mushroom strain, Golden Teachers have gold tops and mild effects.

Because of their abundance and average strength, Golden Teachers are often the reference point for comparing potencies.

If, for some reason, you can’t get your hands on Aussie Gold Tops, you shouldn’t have an issue sourcing Golden Teacher spores.

Just like Golden Teacher and Aussie Gold Tops,  B+  is a beginner-friendly shroom with an average psilocybin potency.

According to the shroom community, B+ is a hybrid of  P. cubensis  and  P. azurescens —  but this claim is highly disputed, and there isn’t any scientific evidence to back it up.

A guide to hunting Australian gold top mushrooms by Australian mushroom hunters. This guide is about the most common magic mushroom in Victoria, and in most states of Australia. This is the psilocybe subaeruginosa. They are also known as gold tops, wavy caps or subs. Gold tops have a caramel coloured cap with a thick white stem and gills that are a creamy brown in colour. The stems go blue when handled.

Gold tops are easy to find and identify when you know what you are looking for. But you need to know what you are doing or you could end up eating a poisonous mushroom and get very sick and even die.

Identifying gold tops

Gold tops are a distinctive magic mushroom that is one of the most potent of all psychedelic mushrooms.

Cap: The cap grows from 1.5 to 5 cm across and has a bulging cone shape with a small central bump. They are translucent when fresh and dry to a caramel/olive brown colour fading to a light brown or dirty white as they dry. Sometimes they have a wavy appearance. The gills at the edge of the cap point upwards.

Gills: The gills can go from being broadly to narrowly attached to the stem. They are cream when the mushie is immature changing to the colour of chocolate milk as they mature.

Stem: The stem is from 30 to 125 mm in length and 2 to 5 mm thick. It is shiny white in colour that goes blue when handled. It is uniform and sturdy as well as straight with a slight twist. It can be short and fat or long and thin depending on the conditions the mushie is growing in. Gold caps are usually swollen at the base.

Spore print: Its spores are a purplish-brown colour. Before you take gold caps, make a spore print so you know exactly what you are taking. To do this, take the cap off the mushie and put it on foil or a piece of paper face down. Leave overnight and the cap will drop spores. If they are a dark purplish brown colour then they are psychedelic mushrooms.

Season: Gold caps grow from May through August in Australia and New Zealand.

Habitat: They can grow in woody debris, sandy woody soils, in decaying piles of twigs and leaves, bark and gardens. You can find them growing singly or in clumps.

Strength: Fresh there is 0.79 mg of psilocybin and 0.23 mg psilocin per gram. Gold caps have 8 mg of psilocybin and 1.5 mg psilocin per gram dried. Gold caps are usually made up of 90 percent water and it takes 10 grams of fresh mushies to get 1 gram of dry material. When drying them some of the psilocin evaporates so they are stronger when fresh.

How much to take: Depending on how experienced you are 8 to 30 grams of fresh gold caps or 1 to 3.5 of dried ones. Taking more after the initial dose will not make you higher. It will only make the current effects last longer. Get yourself scales so you can weigh out your dose until you know what a gram looks like. As a guide, three medium-sized mushies usually equals a gram.

Make sure you have a cover story ready in case you get questioned by the cops. Take your dog with you so you can say you are walking your dog. It is also a good idea to take a camera. Not only to photograph your mushies for identification but you can always say you are taking photos of the area if you get questioned.

Take a paper bag with you to put the mushies inside when you pick them. Do not use a plastic bag as they sweat and will turn them to mush. You can also use a plastic container lined with newspaper but keep it safely stashed in your backpack. You don’t want to get caught with it visibly in your hands. The cops are unlikely to search you if you have a plausible story. But, if you have it in your hands, they will bust you.

Cover stories

If, by chance, you ever do get caught just say you are studying wild fungi for an assignment. Or, you could say you are looking for wild mushies for dinner. This is a just a few examples but never say you are looking for magic mushies. Whatever you do, do not act nervous. Stay cool and respectful. Even if you do get caught they will probably only ask you to empty out your bag if they think you are innocent.

It can also be a good idea to pick other mushrooms as well as gold caps. You will really make you look innocent if picked up by the cops if they find you carrying a variety of mushrooms. They can hardly accuse you of looking for magic mushies if you are carrying more than one variety. If they accuse you of this, then you can act innocent and ask which ones are the magic ones.

Avoid being paranoid when out mushie hunting. In fact, if you tend to be paranoid then you probably should skip the magic mushies as they will only make the paranoia worse. You should only take them with a clear head and in a stress-free situation. And only with people around that you trust.

Searching for gold caps

Gold caps grow on twigs and woodchips and sometimes they hide under grass. You can usually find them in woody areas but they don’t grow on trees. When searching, keep your eyes on the ground.

These yellow top mushrooms Australia don’t like the sun or heat and thrive growing in shaded areas. They love the rain and when mushroom season is really wet, they grow bigger and are more abundant. Gold caps are too small when their immature with a button like caps that connect to the stalk. Leave these to grow and come back for them later when they grow bigger. Also, they’ll leave their spores in the ground to grow the next time that it rains. The cap is velvety soft, smooth and damp. Their stems are thick and feel solid to touch and can even be curvy.

When the mushie matures, its gills become exposed as the cap grows bigger. Their gills are the fleshy part that drops the spores so more can grow in the future. These are a light coloured when young and they darken up as they mature.

The caps can vary in shape. Sometimes they’re wavy and aren’t symmetrical or they can be flat and even shaped. Often you will see them with holes in them where a caterpillar has been feasting on them. I wonder what a tripping caterpillar looks like.

Sometimes gold caps grow alone with others scattered in the area. Other times they can grow in large clusters and clumped together. It’s hard to pick single ones of these without disturbing the whole cluster.

Blue bruising

These mushrooms have a thick stalk. When you squeeze it gently, it feels spongy. This is the water in it. It will also go blue. The blue colour tells you this is a psychedelic mushroom. This is an indication of the psilocybin that changes into psilocin when you eat it and takes you on a trip. The bluer the stalk goes the more potent the mushroom. They also have a sheen about the stem that almost looks like a glossy wood stain.

Often the caramel coloured cap fades around the ring. Beware, there is a highly toxic mushroom that looks similar. But it is smaller with an orangey coloured cap. Its stem is white and can have orange on it as well. Gold caps have a white stem that can have blue and grey on it. Never orange.

Where magic mushies grow

Gold caps grow in a variety of different environments:

• They love mulch. Piles of mulch like the ones you find in garden and park flower beds. Take a look in your own garden if you mulch. You may be lucky to find a stash in your own backyard.
• You can find them near rivers and creeks where there are trees on the ground or lots of fallen tree branches and twigs. They tend to prefer land that is not flat. So, you may find them on the banks of watercourses.
• Tan bark. They also love tan bark and grow between it the small pieces of it. This is an ideal habitat for these mushrooms.
• Woody areas. Gold caps love to grow in woody areas. Along walking tacks where there is a lot of woody matter in parks and bushy areas.
• Tall grass. Gold caps love to grow in tall grasses where there is a lot of matter dropped on the ground. It gives them shelter and it is a damp environment without being too wet. The soil will be softer in these areas making it easier for mushrooms to grow. Mushies found in tall grass will typically have longer, thicker stems than those growing in other areas.

When to find gold caps

In Victoria, the season starts in April after good rain so the season may not start until the middle of May. It only takes a night of rain for them to start growing and they grow very fast. So, it is a good idea to wait until there has been a few days of rain before you go mushie hunting. First thing, early in the morning is the best time to look for them.

Make sure you take a pair of scissors with you so you can cut them off at the base of the stem. This way you leave the roots behind and they can keep growing. Avoid pulling them out of the ground because they cannot regenerate when you do not leave the roots behind. If you forget to take scissors, pinch them at the base of the stem to break them off.

Storing fresh magic mushies

Now you have picked you mushies it is time to eat them. When you get a big haul store them in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for up to five days. Do not freeze them because this will make them turn to mush.

When you eat fresh mushrooms remember about 10 grams equals 1 gram dried. So, you will need to eat about 30 grams of fresh mushrooms to get a strong effect compared to 3 grams of dried material. This is a good dose for inexperienced trippers to take. Obviously you can eat more, especially if you have taken them before.

You can dry any mushrooms you have left over and store them for as long as you like.

Drying gold caps

To dry your gold caps, put them on a flat surface. Remove any dirt and get rid of any bugs that may have made it in to the paper bag.

Now you need something to dry them on. A cake cooling rack is perfect or something similar Chicken wire also works well if you have some. The air needs to reach all parts of the mushrooms so they dry evenly. You can even use a newspaper to dry them on.

Don’t use the oven on a high heat to dry your mushies. The high heat kills the psychoactive ingredient in them. Put them in front of a fan heater on a low heat setting overnight. Also, you don’t want the fan on high as it will blow your mushies away.

It will take 24 hours for the mushrooms to dry but they may still not be dried enough. You’ll want the stems to break when bent. If they don’t break, then there’s still moisture in them. You don’t want to store them with any moisture left in them as they will sweat and eventually rot all the mushrooms stored together.

There are three ways to get gold cap mushrooms dried – the oven, a DampRid chamber or a food dehydrator.

Drying mushies in the oven

To dry your mushrooms in the oven:

• Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.
• Leave it to heat up for 20 minutes and then turn it off. Open the oven door a little bit.
• Let the oven cool down for 5 minutes. Put the mushrooms dried using the fan into the oven on several layers of newspaper. Leave the oven door open.
• Leave them in there for 15 to 20 minutes.
• Remove them from the oven and let them cool down for 10 minutes.
• Check they are totally dry. If they are still not completely dry, repeat the process.

Drying the mushies using a DampRid chamber

You can by DampRid at any supermarket. Get a container large enough to fit the drying rack or you can use a plastic vegetable steamer. Whatever works best.

Empty the DampRid into the bottom of the container and sit the drying rack with the fan dried mushrooms on it on top. Seal with the lid and leave to finish drying for 24 hours. Again, check they a fully dry and store as detailed below.

DampRid is expensive and you may look suspicious if you regularly buy it at your local store.

Using a dehydrator

If you have a dehydrator, use that to finish drying your gold caps. Pop them in and turn the heat to low. Do not be tempted to use a higher setting or you will ruin all your hard work and destroy the psychoactive compound in the mushrooms. Leave them to dry overnight.

And, again, check to make sure they are completely dry. Put them back into the dehydrator for a while if they still contain moisture.

Storing dry gold caps

Once they are fully dry, put them into an airtight glass container. Get some gel packets of desiccant. You may have some lying around in the house in old vitamin pill bottles or shoe boxes. These absorb moisture. Pop them into the jar with the dry mushrooms so they absorb any moisture while stored. If you do not want these touching your mushrooms, tape them to the lid of the jar.

You can also grind the dry mushrooms into a fine powder using a coffee grinder for storage. This is a good way of storing them and means each dose will have an equal amount of the psychoactive ingredient. Grinding them for storage saves space and it is easier to use them. You can even store them in gel caps so they are easier to take.

Before you take the powdered mushrooms mix them with lemon juice. This changes the psilocybin into psilocin. This is what happens anyway when you take them but this makes them work quicker. Let it sit for a few minutes and use in your tea or a glass of fresh fruit juice.

I have always found Macedon ranges or The Mornington Peninsula to be great locations. I have never returned home empty handed.

Chairs Gonzalez, Yes GT mostly grow in cow / horse poo… BUT I Have found them growing just on soil and I suspect that particular site previously he’d manure and spores. My suggestion to anyone searching GT’s is to befriend a cow farmer and BE UP FRONT ON YOUR INTENTIONS as honesty pays. If he (the farmer) is cool, then respect his property and a slab of beer or bottle of spirits shows your appreciation to the good he’s done for you. Good Luck. Natureboy

They can be found everywhere if u know what u are looking for, cow paddocks around shaded areas and in long wet grass is good. I get them down the Tewkesbury near Wisemans Ferry, up in the hills near Kurrajong. They can be found anywhere in right conditions. U want to head out at dawn after a good rain

We were staying in bright Victoria and tried loads of places, we travelled about 45mins to Stanley to pine forests and hit the jack pot. So my tip is: look for pine forests that are short, ones you have to crouch to get in, not the giant ones that you can walk through.. loads of pine needles = lots of mushrooms. I have collected two types of magic mushrooms here in Victoria Australia over three decades, Goldcaps and the more powerful Bluemeanies which are easy to identify because of their blue stained stems which at their most potent just before they die can bleed a bright fluorescent blue dye that is so vivid you feel like you are tripping before you even take them. My question is, do Goldcaps also have blue stained stems because I can not for the life of me remember what criteria I used to use in their identification, are the gold coloured mushrooms pictured Goldcaps???

Haha I think you might be thinking about cubensis? Subs like to grow on wood and in damp forests. I have a mulch pile that is quite brilliant for them. This article didn’t specify which ones it’s talking about but going by the habitat description and the mushroom characteristics, I’d say it’s referencing Psilocybe Subaeruginosa.

الاثار الجانبية واضرار تريب جولد Trib Gold

قد يتسبب هذا الدواء في خفض ضغط الدم لذلك لا يجب تناوله في نفس التوقيت مع أدوية الضغط.

How To Do The Golden Cap Walk From Seatown, Langdon Hill or Charmouth!

If you want to see an incredible view of the Dorset Jurassic Coast then you have to do the Golden Cap walk and climb to the top of the Golden Cap viewpoint!

I visited on a hot day and after a bit of searching on a map, I realised there was a shorter Golden cap walk which started at Langdon Hill car park , went through Langdon Hill woods, through some fields and to the top of the viewpoint! The elevation and distance really weren’t that bad, and from my experience, I see this as the easy Golden cap walk if that’s what you are looking for.

However, you can also reach the top of the Golden Cap from beaches along the coast by doing the Seatown to Golden Cap Walk and the Charmouth to Golden Cap Walk .

In this Dorset travel blog, I’m going to detail how to do the Golden Cap walk along with Golden Cap parking and the best Golden Cap route to take for you!

Langdon Hill to Golden Cap – Easy Golden Cap Walk

I’m going to explain how I did the Golden Cap Walk which also turned out to be one of the Golden Cap circular walk options which I really enjoyed, and because of the walk being through the woods for half of it and the elevation wasn’t too bad, I do definitely see this as the easiest Golden Cap walk that you can do!

Langdon Hill Parking – Golden Cap Car Park

Type ‘Langdon Hill National Trust Car Park’ into Google Maps and you’ll find it no problem, this is the only Golden Cap car park for this route.

It’s just off the A35 and from the A35 to the car park there is a very narrow lane to drive along, but this is the right way!

The Langdon Hill Trust Car Park is a good size and there is a machine to pay for parking which takes cash, card and you can use a parking app (very handy!). There are a few picnic tables but aside from this, there are no other facilities and no toilets.

I paid for 2 hours of parking however I definitely did the Golden Cap walk from Langdon Hill in less than an hour as I was pretty quick, but there is just £1.00 difference so you might want to pay for more parking incase you want to keep walking once you get to the top!

Golden Cap Walk from Langdon Hill Woods

Langdon Hill Woods is a lovely place to walk around and is definitely popular with dog walkers.

Take a left at the car park, walk down a shaded wood footpath and then you’ll see signs to continue down a smaller footpath and through a few gates.

This then opens up into a field and to get to the Golden Cap viewpoint you walk through 2 fields which are slightly inclined, through another gate and up some steps to where the viewpoint opens out.

There are 2 major viewpoints either side of the cliff head, one overlooking Lyme Regis and Charmouth and the other side overlooks Seatown and West Bay, which was definitely the side I found most impressive!

On the way back down to the Langdon Hill Golden Cap Car Park you can take the exact same route or you can make it a circular walk by doing a loop the other way around Langdon Hill Woods.

Who should do this Golden Cap Dorset Walk??

If you are short on time as I was, then I recommend this Golden Cap route to you as it is much shorter than the others from Charmouth or Seatown, I walked quite fast and spent about 15 minutes at the top only and did the Golden Cap hike in less than 1 hour.

If it’s a hot day and you want to get out of the sun, this route will keep you cool for half of the way as it is through the woods and therefore shaded.

If you have difficultly walking and want the easiest Golden Cap walk , this is also for you as it is the shortest with the least inclines!

Seatown to Golden Cap Walk

If you want a full coastal walk then doing the Seatown to Golden Cap walk is the best walk for you! One of the things I love about Dorset is the many Dorset footpaths and the many paths that run right along the top of the Jurassic Coastline!

Seatown Parking – Golden Cap Car Park

‘Seatown Car Park’ is the main car park in Seatown and this is the best place for Golden Cap parking if you are taking this route as the coastal footpath crosses alongside the car park!

Seatown is a popular destination so this car park might get busy in the summer months and it costs to park there.

Golden Cap Walk from Seatown

The best thing about Dorset Coastal walks is that they are very easy to follow! From Seatown Car Park you’ll need to head up Sea Hill Lane which connects back to the footpath.

From my experience, there are steep inclines from the beaches in Dorset (and Devon) up onto the clifftop so keep this in mind for your walking ability.

However, once you are at the top of the footpath walking through the fields the inclines and declines are fairly moderate.

There is just one last steeper incline at the end which takes you through the last field and onto the steps to the top of the Golden Cap viewpoint!

Charmouth to Golden Cap Walk

For another coastal walk to the Golden Cap viewpoint but for one that is much longer – well over double the length of the coastal walk from Seatown, you can go from Charmouth which is a well loved beach just up from Lyme Regis!

Charmouth Parking – Golden Cap Car Park

The best car park in Charmouth for the Golden Cap Hike is ‘Beach Car Park’ right on the coast and right on the coastal footpath.

An alternative car park which is slightly up the road and back from the beach but one that may be quieter is ‘Lower Sea Lane Car Park’ .

Golden Cap Walk from Charmouth

Looking on the map there are many Dorset footpaths around Charmouth. There is a footpath through fields along the coast from Charmouth to the Golden Cap viewpoint.

Because you are already on a pretty long walk, there is the possibility to do a Charmouth to Golden Cap circular walk by taking one of the footpaths back to Charmouth that is further inland.

West Bay to Golden Cap Walk

Lyme regis to golden cap walk.

Although it is definitely possible to do the Golden Cap Walk from the popular Dorset towns of West Bay and Lyme Regis because there is a Dorset Coastal Footpath from both towns all the way along the coast to the Golden Cap.

Unless you are fit and are definitely looking for a long walk I wouldn’t personally walk from either of these towns for the Golden Cap Walk!

How long does it take to walk up golden cap.

This depends on the route you take, the quickest route from Langdon Hill takes about 20 minutes, whereas the walk from Charmouth to Golden Cap takes about 90 minutes.

Where do you park to walk up the Golden Cap?

There is a car park at Langdon Hill, a car park in Seatown and a car park in Charmouth which are all close to the footpath to Golden Cap.

Can you walk from Charmouth to Golden Cap?

Yes, you can do the Charmouth to Golden Cap walk in about 1 hour 30 minutes. This is by far the longest way to the Golden Cap.

How far is it from Charmouth to Golden Cap?

It is 5.5km / 3.4 miles from Charmouth to Golden Cap. This is the longest route to the Golden Cap. Walking from Seatown or Langdon Hill is much shorter.

This circular Golden Cap walk from Seatown takes you up to the highest point on the South Coast of England, returning via an inland route past a ruined church packed with history and through the lovely woodland on Langdon Hill.

At 191m (627ft), Golden Cap is the highest point on the south coast. The climb to the top is quite tough, with some very steep sections, but the views along Dorset’s Jurassic Coastline are well worth it!

The Golden Cap lies on a large National Trust estate filled with farmland, meadows, woodland, and the “lost” village of Stanton St Gabriel. This abandoned hamlet was originally a Saxon settlement, and was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086! Today, all that remains are the ruins of a 13th-century chapel.

This 4-mile circular Golden Cap walk explores much of the estate, including the old chapel. Following the South West Coast Path for the first section, most of the trail is signposted, clear, and easy to follow. But the rest of the walk can be trickier, so this local’s guide should help! Enjoy…

Golden Cap Walk – Details And Map

• Distance:  6.5km / 4 miles
• Time:  1.5 – 2.5 hours
• Elevation Gain:  299m
• Difficulty:  Challenging
• Accessibility:   Several sets of stairs which cannot be avoided. No styles, several kissing gates. Steep ascent and descent up and down Golden Cap, with a moderate ascent and descent on the return route inland.
• Terrain: gravel paths, dirt tracks, grass, and steps. Part of the walk follows a country road with no pavement.
• Parking:  Paid parking at Seatown Carpark (DT6 6JU) – £5 per car, card and cash accepted. There is no road parking nearby so the car park is your best bet.
• Facilities: None on route. There are toilets, a pub, a shop and a small beach cafe in Seatown.

Step 1 – Seatown to Golden Cap

Starting Point: Seatown Car Park, DT6 6JU

Cross the small wooden footbridge leading out of the car park and turn right onto the road. Follow Sea Hill Lane towards Chideock, following the South West Coast Path diversion signs. Take care on this road as it’s a single track country lane with no pavements.

Just after the holiday park , you’ll see a low stone wall on your left, with a gate and a signpost for Golden Cap. Turn left here. 

Follow the SW Coast Path over a small wooden footbridge and across the field, with the sloping form of Golden Cap ahead of you. Pass through a kissing gate and cross another footbridge to walk through the copse. Head through two more gates and onto the steps. Time to start climbing! 

Step 2 – Walk up Golden Cap

The trail is clear (and steep!), leading straight forwards until you reach a wooden bench next to a fingerpost. Although the sign for Golden Cap is pointing straight ahead, the path actually veers left past the bench. The narrow, slightly overgrown track to the right of the bench leads to Langdon Hill. 

Shortly after the bench, you’ll go through another gate to emerge into an open field. The way up Golden Cap is clear before you, so follow the grass path straight across the field, through another kissing gate, and begin your ascent proper. 

The walk up Golden Cap is very steep, so take your time and stop whenever you need. At the first wooden bench you reach, turn around to enjoy the views back down to Seatown. You’ve already come a long way! 

You’ll pass through another gate and emerge onto the back of the hill, with a view to the northeast towards Colmers Hill near Bridport . You’ll come to a fingerpost where the coast path meets the track from Langdon Hill (photo below). Follow the coast path sign through another gate and up some steps which will curve around to reach the top of the hill.

There is a stone waymarker here, but this isn’t quite the peak. Follow either of the two paths leading forwards until you reach the stone sign that says Golden Cap.

Step 3 – Descend Golden Cap

Stop for a while on top of Golden Cap to enjoy the views in both directions, down to Seatown behind you and ahead towards Charmouth and Lyme Regis . 

Optional: If you want a shorter walk, begin by heading back down the way you came until you reach the fingerpost at the bottom of the steps. From here, take the signposted trail back towards Langdon Hill, and skip ahead to the kissing gate at Step 6. 

When you’re ready to press on, follow the SW Coast Path (there is a small stone trail marker) as it zig-zags down the other side of the hill via a long steep staircase.

When you come to a wooden gate, the SW Coast Path carries on straight towards Charmouth ahead of you. However, for the Golden Cap circular walk, head diagonally right across the field following the signpost for St Gabriel’s. Take care as it is a steep descent.

Step 4 – St Gabriel’s Chapel

At the bottom of this field, follow the signpost left through the hedgerow to find the ruins of St Gabriel’s Chapel. 

The chapel was part of Stanton St Gabriel, a small hamlet which was abandoned two centuries ago. Most of the building dates back to the 13th century, while the porch was built in the 14th century. It’s said that smugglers used the ruins to hide contraband. According to local legend, the chapel has a romantic history:

“Two newly weds, escaping from a storm stricken ship in a small boat, came ashore here. The husband prayed to St Gabriel for their salvation and promised to build a chapel if they were saved. Despite his wife dying in his arms on the beach, he was as good as his word.” Golden Cap Team of Churches

Follow the path through a large wooden gate, then past a red brick farmhouse on your left. This historic property has been converted into four holiday cottages, managed by the National Trust.

With the cottages behind you, follow the track out and then immediately take the gate on your right (photo below), signposted for Langdon Hill Car Park.

Follow the dirt stone path until you reach another wide wooden gate leading into St Gabriel’s Wood. At the next wooden gate, where a left turn points towards Morecombelake, continue straight following the Langdon Hill Car Park signs through the woodland. 

Step 5 – St Gabriel’s Wood to Langdon Hill

When you emerge from the woods via a wide wooden gate, the track curves to the left but the signpost points forward (photo above). Follow this and head forwards directly up the hill along the edge of the field, through a hedgerow, and along the edge of the second field, where you will see a large wooden gate and a fingerpost in the top right-hand corner.

This emerges to the left of Filcombe Farm. Cross the lane and head through another wooden gate to climb uphill along the edge of another field towards Langdon Hill woods.

Once you reach the edge of the woods there are two options. Heading left will loop you around the top of the woods and back down the other side to reach Seatown. My preference is to go right and follow the track gently downhill along the edge of the woods.

Step 6 – Langdon Hill to Seatown

After the path curves left around the bottom of the woods you will reach a fork. Take the right-hand path (signposted Golden Cap) and head downhill a short way until you reach a wooden kissing gate.

Turn left here, following the sign for Seatown. It’s a narrow dirt track between tall ferns, with the sea on your right and the woods on your left. Keep straight on this path, following signs for Seatown and ignoring any turnoffs. Take care if it’s been raining as the path can become quite muddy.

Eventually, the path widens out. Ignore the overgrown lefthand path at the fork (marked as Petticrate Lane on maps), and continue forwards along the wide, obvious track between tall hedgerows, with a view of the tall cliffs east of Seatown ahead of you, until you reach Sea Hill Lane.

Turn right onto the road, taking care of traffic as there are no pavements, and follow it back down through Seatown to the Carpark. There is a pub and an ice cream shop here if you’re in need of a well-earned reward. I’ve not personally tried The Anchor Inn yet, but I can confirm that the locally made ice creams and cakes from Baboo Gelato are very good!

According to our Strava it was more like 5 miles and took a bit longer than we expected, about 3 hours. That said the directions were inch perfect and we enjoyed a beautiful walk.

Oh really? Perhaps Strava is more accurate than what I use – my GPS tracker had the walk down at 4.2 miles (and that included a little bit of doubling back to check signs and details as I was taking notes). Interesting that it came out at 5 miles for you! I did it in 2 hours 15 with a fair few stops, was moving for about 1.5 hours, but I’m always a bit wary giving timings as everyone moves at different speeds!

Factors We Considered When Picking Products

There’s no magic formula for choosing hats in general — if it feels good and looks good, you’re off to a good start. But when you add “travel-friendly” as a requirement, you’ve got to consider specific attributes, including:

When traveling, a hat will either be on your head or mixed in with your other gear. When it’s on your head, it may be there for hours, exposed to sun, wind, and rain. You’ll sweat into it, and at some point it may start to itch. Choose hats that are soft, properly sized, and won’t lose their shape.

On a serious note, please  do  choose hats that offer good sun protection. The folks at  SkinCancer.org say, “the best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back.”

Packability/Crushability

Once you take off your hat, it’s got to go somewhere… in a coat pocket, perhaps, or flattened and layered into your luggage. If you want it spring back into proper shape, look for products that advertise as ‘crushable’ or ‘packable.’ Wool felt performs well, as do many synthetics. However, straw is brittle and will crack or crumble, and cotton will wrinkle and crease.

Sad story: I took a spiffy fedora with me to Europe last year, but had to hastily jam it into my bag at one point. In Italy, it emerged crushed and never regained its former glory. Since then I’ve only traveled with caps that can take a beating and still look fresh.

You put a lot of effort and expense into planning the perfect trip, so don’t cheap out on that fashion statement sitting above your ears. Invest in one of these quality products that are sure to survive your globetrotting adventures. Go for it.

When you look good, you feel good. Spending a little extra on an accessory like a hat may seem superfluous, but in reality, can you put a price on self-confidence? Yes. Yes, you can. But most of these hats are affordable and can be the perfect accent for any travel outfit. Splurge a little, buddy!

Gold rate today jumps after disappointing US non-farm payroll data, slide in US dollar rate, Xi Jinping's Europe trip

Gold rate today: The release of disappointing US non-farm payroll data last week, coupled with the ongoing weakness in the US dollar rates , has led to a rebound in gold prices today . The gold futures contract for June 2024 expiry on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) opened on a positive note this morning at ₹ 70,849 per 10 gm. It quickly reached an intraday high of ₹ 70,984 per 10 gm. In the international market , the COMEX gold price is hovering around $2,320 per troy ounce, while the spot gold price is around $2,310. Experts in the commodity market attribute this rise in gold prices to the weak US dollar and the disappointing US non-farm payroll data. The latter has particularly impacted the US dollar, renewing the US Fed's concerns over the US economy, especially inflation.

US dollar rate in focus

Speaking on the reasons fueling gold prices today, Anuj Gupta, Head of Commodity & Currency at HDFC Securities, said, " Gold rates today bounced back as the US dollar price has come under pressure after the weak US non-farm payroll data. In the US, non-farm payroll data was released on Friday last week. The US Labour Department reported 1.75 lakh job creations in April 2024, whereas the market estimated 2.43 lakh new jobs. This has renewed the concerns regarding the US economy, especially the US inflation that the US Fed recently raised during the FOMC meeting."

Anticipating further upside in gold price in the near term, Kaynat Chainwala, Senior Manager-Commodity Research at Kotak Securities said, "COMEX Gold prices edged higher on Monday as a softer-than-expected US jobs report spurred expectations of an earlier rate cut, pushing market bets on a September rate cut to 80% and increasing speculation of a second rate cut in the November or December meeting. Gold prices witnessed a second weekly decline as easing geopolitical tensions, expectations of fewer rate cuts for the year, and a more positive outlook for global economic growth dampened haven demand. However, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has revised its outlook for the global economy upward, to 3.1% this year and 3.2% in 2025, from October forecast of 2.9% and 3% respectively, citing stronger-than-expected growth in the US and China. Gold may see some recovery supported by fears of escalating geopolitical tension in the Middle East and a softer dollar."

Xi Jinping's Europe trip in focus

Turning to the Chinese President Xi Jinping's Europe visit , Anuj Gupta of HDFC Securities noted, "There's also a sentimental boost from the Chinese market. The market is anticipating significant outcomes from the Chinese President's Europe trip, given the ongoing geopolitical tension between Ukraine and Russia, now in its third year, and a fresh crisis in the Middle East. Additionally, the market is hopeful for positive business outcomes for the dragons, considering China's significant role in the global metal market."

Gold price today: Important levels to watch

With his extensive knowledge and experience, Anuj Gupta of HDFC Securities provided valuable insight, "MCX gold rate today has immediate support at ₹ 70,500 per 10 gm whereas it is facing resistance at ₹ 71,200. The gold price may touch ₹ 71,600 per 10 gm mark on breaching this resistance. In the international market, COMEX gold price has major support placed at $2,300 per troy ounce while facing a hurdle at $2,330 per troy ounce." This analysis, backed by his expertise, can serve as a useful guide for investors and traders in their decision-making process.

The Tesla CEO has gained $36 billion in net worth over the last week, according to Bloomberg's Billionaire Index , after Tesla shares surged over reports that the company had moved a step closer to getting approval to roll out its Full Self-Driving technology in China . China is Tesla's second-biggest market.

Musk's fortune, closely tied to his 20.5% stake in Tesla, has fluctuated considerably over the past few years.

Despite the latest rally, the SpaceX CEO has seen his personal wealth drop by $27.5 billion since the start of the year, according to Bloomberg data , as Tesla shares have trended downward.

The automakers' stock dropped earlier this month as investors reacted to weaker-than-expected vehicle deliveries for Q1 and reports that Musk had scrapped plans to build a $25,000 EV before shooting up after he promised to fast-track development of cheaper models in the company's earnings call.

Shares rose by 12% on Monday's opening bell following Musk's surprise trip to China, which Wedbush analyst Dan Ives described as a "home run," although they are still down nearly 22% since the start of the year.

Musk is also still a lot less rich than he was in 2021, when he was top of the billionaire's index with an estimated fortune of $340 billion. Three years later, he's now behind LVMH boss Bernard Arnault and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, with a current estimated net worth of $202 billion.

Musk has had a difficult few months. Tesla briefly lost its crown as the world's largest producer of electric vehicles to Chinese upstart BYD , and laid off more than 10% of its global workforce earlier this month.

The EV giant has also faced a high-profile recall of nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks the company has delivered so far, and reported plunging profits in its latest earnings amid a brutal EV price war.

But Musk has proved adept at spinning bad news into share price bumps in the past, raking in $100 billion last year despite ongoing issues at social media site X, and after a bumpy few weeks, it looks like he's been able to do it again.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment made outside normal working hours.

Goldman Sachs to scrap cap on bonuses for hundreds of UK staff

Changes will allow the investment bank’s star performers to earn up to 25 times their annual salary

Goldman Sachs has told hundreds of its top UK bankers that it is eradicating a cap on bonuses, in a move that will allow its star performers to earn up to 25 times their annual salary.

Richard Gnodde, chief executive of Goldman Sachs International, made the announcement during a video message to staff on Thursday. It comes months after UK regulators confirmed they were formally scrapping EU rules that previously limited bonuses to twice an individual’s base salary. UK lenders including HSBC , Barclays and NatWest are planning to follow suit.

Gnodde said in the video that ending the UK cap would help level the playing field across its international workforce. “We are a global firm and to the extent possible we adopt a consistent global approach across everything we do. The bonus cap rules were an important factor preventing us from being consistent in the area of compensation.”

He said Goldman had advocated for changes that would give banks the flexibility of weighting payouts more heavily towards bonuses rather than fixed salaries. The move gives lenders more control over staff pay, depending on performance. It will also be easier to defer pay, and potentially claw back bonuses from bankers when things go wrong.

The changes will apply to hundreds of Goldman’s 6,000 UK staff – known as material risk takers – who will now be able to earn up to 25 times their salaries in bonuses.

“Going forward, we will be aligning UK material risk takers’ compensation mix more closely with the firm’s global compensation principles – meaning lower fixed pay, but a higher proportion of discretionary compensation,” Gnodde said.

“This also reflects the prudential objective of our regulators,” he added.

The change will not apply to Goldman’s EU-based bankers, and unlike UK regulators, American watchdogs do not require any guidance on maximum payouts.

The bonus cap was originally part of changes introduced after the 2007-08 banking crash, and aimed to stamp out a bonus culture blamed for encouraging short-term profits over longer-term stability. The hope was that, with less of an individual’s pay riding on performance, there would be a lower incentive for risky behaviour.

However, they were opposed by some UK politicians as well as the Bank of England, who argued that the clampdown would make it harder to attract skilled bankers, who would instead flee to rival hubs in New York, Singapore or Zurich. The then chancellor, George Osborne, tried to overturn the measure at the European court of justice in 2014.

Former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng then took advantage of Britain’s exit from the EU, and announced plans to scrap the cap in September 2022. The changes were later approved by his successor, Jeremy Hunt, with regulators formalising the change in November last year.

Goldman said in a statement: “This approach gives us greater flexibility to manage fixed costs through the cycle and pay for performance. It brings the UK closer to the practice in other global financial centres, to support the UK as an attractive venue for talent.”

Tesla stock rises after CEO Musk scores key deals with China on weekend trip to Beijing

Tesla shares jumped as much as 18% on Monday after CEO Elon Musk met with a top Chinese government leader on Sunday in Beijing and reportedly received backing to roll out its advanced driver-assistance in the country. 

Shares of Tesla jumped $25.66, or 15%, to $193.95 in afternoon trading after touching an intraday high of $198.87. Musk's visit to China comes just as the nation's carmakers are showing off their latest electric vehicle models at the Beijing auto show. 

Chinese Premier Li Qiang told Musk that he hopes the U.S. will work more with China on "win-win" cooperation, citing Tesla's operations in China as a successful example of economic cooperation, China's state broadcaster CCTV said on its main evening news program. Officials told Tesla that Beijing is giving a tentative greenlight for the automaker to roll out its "full self-driving" software in China, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The much-needed stock boost comes as the automaker struggles with  decelerating domestic EV sales  and mounting competition. 

For China, Musk is a welcome antidote to the tough talk from U.S. officials, which played out most recently during a visit by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Li's remarks also reflect China's efforts to attract foreign investment to boost its flagging economy.

It wasn't clear whether Musk would visit the auto show, which runs through this week. Chinese automakers and startups have launched a bevy of electric cars in recent years, some going head-to-head with Tesla and undercutting the American maker on price.

But Musk's visit was more than just a show of support for China's fast-growing EV market , but an attempt to obtain approval to bring Tesla's full self driving software (FSD) to the country, reported Bloomberg.

Tesla has a major manufacturing base in Shanghai for both domestic sales in China and exports to Europe and other regions. It cut prices in China a week ago, dropping the Model 3 to 231,900 yuan ($32,700) and the Model Y to 249,900 yuan ($35,200), following similar reductions in the U.S.

During their meeting, Musk told Li the Shanghai factory is Tesla's "most productive plant globally," reported Bloomberg, which also reported that Musk scored a mapping  deal  with Chinese tech giant  Baidu , as well as data-collection clearance — two huge victories for the billionaire.

The surprise visit by Musk was a "watershed moment" for Tesla, Wedbush analysts Dan Ives, John Katsingris, Steven Wahrhaftig and Sam Brandeis, said in a research note. 

"In a major moment for Tesla, Elon Musk made a surprise weekend trip to Beijing ... with a laser focus on cutting the ribbon on the long awaited rollout of FSD software and permission/approval to transfer data overseas," the analysts said.

"If Musk is able to obtain approval from Beijing to transfer data collected in China abroad this would be pivotal around the acceleration of training its algorithms for its autonomous technology globally. We also believe this trip will be significant for Tesla and Musk further strengthening its EV footprint within the Chinese market at a pivotal time," they added.

An earlier CCTV online report said that Musk had come at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and met with its president, Ren Hongbin, to exchange views on further cooperation and other topics.

The European Union has launched an investigation into Chinese subsidies for the EV industry that could lead to tariffs on electric vehicles made in China, potentially including Tesla cars.

The green energy subsidies have helped transform the Chinese auto market, with EVs reaching about a quarter of new car sales last year, eating into demand for gasoline-powered vehicles.

Foreign automakers such as Volkswagen and Nissan are scrambling to develop new EV models to hold onto or claw back market share in China, the world's largest automobile market.
