by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 6, 2023 | Europe , Italy , Travel Tips

When most people think of Capri, they imagine a luxurious island getaway with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. While it is certainly that, Capri is also a fascinating place to explore with plenty of history and culture to discover.

If you’re only able to visit Capri for one day , here is an itinerary to help you make the most of your time in Capri.

Ready To Travel? Don't Go Without Travel Insurance.

Check Prices

In this guide, we’ll cover the best things to do in Capri, how to get to Capri, where to stay (if you decide to stay longer), what to eat, etc. By the end of this post, you’ll know exactly how to organize a perfect day in Capri.

Capri

How To Get To Capri

The island of Capri is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the southwest coast of Italy. The easiest way to get there is by ferry from Naples, Positano, or Sorrento.

If you’re taking the ferry from Naples, you’ll first need to get to the ferry terminal. The ferry from Naples to Capri takes around 45 minutes and tickets cost around EUR 20-30 per person, depending on the type of ferry you take.

If you’re taking the ferry from Sorrento, you’ll need to get to the ferry terminal. The ferry from Sorrento to Capri takes around 20 minutes and tickets cost between EUR 20-25 per person, depending on the type of ferry you take.

Finally, the last option is to take the ferry from Positano port. The ferry from Positano to Capri takes and costs around EUR 25 and takes about 30 minutes.

If you’re traveling to Capri during the summer, we suggest you book your tickets online in advance because ferry tickets can get sold out quickly.

  • Book a ferry from Sorrento to Capri
  • Book a ferry from Naples to Capri
  • Book a ferry from Positano to Capri

How To Get Around Capri

Once you’re on the island, the best way to get around is on foot or by taking a taxi or bus. There are also a few funicular railways that will take you up to the towns and viewpoints.

Many people visit Capri by boat, either by taking a day trip from Naples or Sorrento or by renting their own boat for the day. This is a great way to see the island’s coastline and visit some of the more secluded beaches.

Alternatively, you can book a guided tour and join a group, or book a private boat in Capri.

What To Do In Capri

There is no shortage of things to do in Capri, but here are some of our top suggestions.

Capri

Take A Ride On The Funicular Up To Mont Solaro

The funiculars are a great way to get around Capri and are perfect for visitors who want to see the island’s highlights without having to walk.

There are three funiculars on the island – the Funicolare Centrale, the Funicolare di Montepertuso, and the Funicolare di Anacapri.

Mont Solaro is accessible from Anacapri, and the funicular is quite unique. In fact, you’ll be sitting in a swing all by yourself while you can enjoy the peace and quiet and admire the views.

Visit The Villa Jovis

The Villa Jovis is a magnificent Roman villa that was once the home of Emperor Tiberius. It’s located high on a cliff overlooking the sea and is a must-see for anyone visiting Capri.

The views from the villa are simply stunning, and it’s fascinating to explore the ruins and imagine what life must have been like for the Roman elite.

Go On A Boat Trip

One of the best ways to see Capri is from the water. There are plenty of boat tours available, or you can rent your own boat for the day. Alternatively, you can take a ferry to one of the nearby islands, such as Ischia or Procida.

During the boat trip, you can swim in the crystal-clear waters, sunbathe on the deck, and enjoy the stunning views. Some of the popular stops are the Blue Grotto, the Green Grotto, and the White Grotto.

Explore The Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is a sea cave that’s illuminated by a natural light that makes the water inside appear to be a bright blue.

You can take a boat tour to the grotto but you’ll need to keep in mind that you might need to wait in a queue to access the cave as you’ll need to switch to a smaller boat to visit it.

Capri

Stroll Through The Streets Of Capri Town

Capri Town is the main town on the island of Capri and is a great place to wander around and explore. The streets are narrow and winding, and there are lots of small shops, cafes, and restaurants to check out.

Make sure to visit Piazzetta de Capri, which is the main square in Capri Town, and is a great place to people watch.

Capri

Go Shopping

Capri is a popular place for shopping, and you’ll find plenty of high-end designer stores selling clothes, shoes, and accessories. There are also lots of small boutiques selling handmade goods and souvenirs.

If you’re looking for something truly unique, make sure to visit the Capri Pearl Factory. Here you can watch the skilled artisans at work and even buy some of their beautiful creations.

That said, many people go to Capri to get handmade leather sandals, which are popular souvenirs. You’ll find plenty of sandal shops in Capri Town and around the island.

Where To Stay In Capri

If you’re visiting Capri for just one day, we recommend staying in Sorrento or Naples and doing a day trip to Capri from there. However, if you’re planning on spending more time on the island, there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from.

You’ll find hotels everywhere around the island, but mostly in Capri and Anacapri.

Want To Visit Capri?

Make sure to book a stay in one of the best hotels in Capri and Anacapri. Best Budget Hotel: Rest and Dream Capri Best mid-range hotel: Aquamarine Relaxing Capri Suites Best luxury hotel: Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco

Where To Eat In Capri

Capri is famous for its fresh seafood, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. If you’re looking for a romantic setting, we recommend Da Gelsomina.

Make sure to try some of the local specialties such as Caprese salad (a salad made with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil), and limoncello (a lemon liqueur).

If you’re vegetarian, don’t worry – there are plenty of options for you too.

Best Time To Visit Capri

The best time to visit Capri is in the spring or autumn when the temperatures are mild and the crowds are smaller. However, it’s also a popular destination for summer holidays, so it can be quite busy during peak season.

You can expect temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius in the spring and autumn, and up to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer.

Capri Travel Tips

Below, you’ll find a few final Capri travel tips to help you make the most of your trip.

  • Capri is a small island, so it’s best to explore on foot.
  • Many of the streets are quite steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
  • Capri is a popular destination, so it can be quite crowded during peak season. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting in the spring or autumn. Alternatively, instead of organizing a day trip to Capri, stay for one night or two. This way, you can enjoy the island in the early mornings and evenings when the daily visitors are gone.
  • The island is quite hilly, so be prepared for some uphill walking.
  • Capri is famous for its fresh seafood, so make sure to try some of the local specialties.
  • Capri is a popular place for shopping, so be sure to bring your credit card!
  • If you’re visiting Capri for just one day, we recommend staying in Sorrento or Naples.

Final Thoughts On Day Trips To Capri

If you’re looking for a beautiful and relaxing Italian island to visit, Capri is a great choice. There’s plenty to do on the island, from swimming in the crystal-clear waters to admiring the views from epic viewpoints.

You can easily explore Capri in one day, but we recommend staying longer if you can. This way, you’ll be able to make the most of Capri when the daily visitors are gone. It will give you the chance to appreciate what the island has to offer.

Top 5 airlines flying to Capri

On the Dubai-Gatwick flight the only meal options were Beef or Chicken. No vegetarian option. This was a surprise. I would usually order in advance but did not this time. Would have been good to know that a vegetarian meal is not available as a standard meal. Thankfully it was just me travelling, but if I’d had my kids with me that would have been a big problem for us.

Checkin and boarding staff at Delhi Airport is not cooperative with passengers Their behavior very humiliating . They don’t allow Lap top bag and Ladies’ purse/vanity bag which most of the airlines allow besides cabin baggage and check in baggages. They try to charge extra payment on the pretext of small variations which normally other Airlines staff don’t do. Airline staff should be courteous & cooperative but check in staff of Emirates Airline at Delhi was not so at all.

Good but needs to improve cleanliness Coffee serve cold Needs to raise standard serving food Otherwise good

I was traveling business purposes and I only had one carry on and a personal computer back pack . My carry on was 8.5 kg little more than allowable. At jfk airport check in they did not let me carry it . I was little disappointed.

Newly reconfigured 380 I assume. Has a new ife with usb c ports and Bluetooth connections

Very bad !! My confirmed ticket got canceled with out notifying me in hyd airport , crew didn’t help us out !! They were very rude!! They made me pay for the confirmed ticket again !! Can you please let us know how I can get the refund for the ticket I paid

Overall good but one thing I didn’t understand is why they didn’t allow me to pick my own seat.

Check-in process at Bengaluru airport was atrociously slow. Emirates should allow baggage drop option after online check-in and verification of documents. The rest of the flight was quite good and we didn't have any complaints.

The air hostess spilled tomato juice on me by mistake in Mumbai -Dubai flight. I was traveling from Mumbai to UAD. Her senior came and offered couple of small chocolates (probably given in business class) as compensation. I asked for access to lounge as I had to travel till IAD and I could shower and change. But she said she cannot do that and did nothing further. I found the response to their mistake as inappropriate.

Food was not eadable. Testless and not apealing. order for indian vegitarian, recived spice less. combination of main course and side iteams are far away from traditonal food, serve less iteams. , but eadoble. Thanks

So terrible. They would not rebook me for a flight until 2 days. I had to spend so much money to get my own flight. They were rude and not helpful.

Super friendly crew. Leg space and entertainment system are below average

Swiss ground crew was again at its prime and although I’m United 1K (Star Alliance Gold) they created problems with my hand luggage - while other passengers were boarding with more handbags and larger hand luggages, were critical on my 2 young kids attending the lounge with me and boarding the plane with me on the priority lane.

Everything was on time and efficient - expected from a Swiss crew. But the entertainment system was pretty bad - the display was old. Food was pretty bad and a couple of times they started serving drinks and then just skipped past my row (and likely several others)

They went out of their way. It was very clean and friendly.

Wheelchair was the excellent service. I didn’t have any food or used entertainment. Overall for my trip experience was excellent. Thank you very much and keep up good work. Best regards

Motivated and friendly crew on a somewhat dated but well kept plane. Hd seats in economy may section, so legroom was excellent.

Thank you to the cordial crew and good hydration throughout the flight, food was good too. Carry ons usually weight by themselves so it does reduce option for cold weather clothes that are heavy, so carryon weight is tight.

United Airlines flights serviced by Swiss Airlines provide for zero communication with Swiss Airlines almost impossible to contact Swiss airlines to make seat selection, upgrades or changes. I won’t do that again if it can be helped.

We so appreciated that our connecting flight waited for 6 of us!!!

The seat did not recline and we called the stewardess, he forced it to recline, but when we landed, it did not come forward because the seat was broken. The stewardess came, He tried to do it but couldn't do it, the flight commander came and spoke to us in a bad tone, telling us to get out of here, she waited at the head and acted as if there was a child and we couldn't get up, it was very shameful, I don't even know if it's true, but she said if you don't get up, the plane will not land and will keep turning around. Then a passenger pushed the seat from behind and it worked. Then we wanted to talk to the supervisor again, but she did not come next to us. We fly so much and this is the first time we encountered such a style.

3 of us were in the business class. All good except the Flight out of Mumbai is too early. It is at 6:30 am. Reporting is at 4 am. We had to get up at 3 am. US connection has 4-5 hours of layover. It would be nicer to start the India flight late (give more time to sleep at home) and have less layover duration in IST.

Okay experience, seats had a very poor legroom and width. Very uncomfortable for long journeys.

COmpared to my experience in the business class of other airlines the food variety and offerings were meager. They did not have any cookies or crackers for snacking! They were unable to offer some other items. This has never been my experience in other airlines.

Great ground-check in crew. Pleasant flight attendant crew. Very short flight

I paid for reserved seats but didn't got them at all

Service was superb and the flight experience overall was great

My mother got sick and dying and i have to change my flight and they charged me $2260 that is redisclose.

My flight had two legs. When checking in at the first leg the agent offering for a deal to upgrade the leg to first class for $199. He then claimed I would be able to upgrade the second leg once I got to the next airport. I declined and when I inquired about upgrading at the second airport, the cost was $1,300. I also had an issue at the airport lounge. I am allowed one guest in the lounge. My friend came in the lounge for less than 5 minutes and left when she couldn’t get a sleeping suite. I wanted to bring in another friend. The airport staff first started acting as though they didn’t understand English and then became upset when I asked for their names so I could file a complaint. As an elite member I knew they could do more but were not. One of the agents started over talking me and walked away mid conversation dismissing my request for assistance. A man claiming to be the manager said you were asking for her name. He also never tried to assist me or see what was going on. He claimed the interactions were recorded and management would see everything. I’m not sure how that would assist me days later. I am sure it didn’t help that I was a black American woman.

My whole body was paining after such long flight. Seats are small. Leg space is too small. Food is good.

The plain was on time. Better seating, better service than Discover. I wish I could used them for my return flight. I have used them before, and they were always good.

Hated every minute of it. Delayed for over 10 hours only to have to cancel rental car, car insurance and hotel. Its taken me 3days to get to my final destination when it should have only taken 12-14 hours. Very unhappy with Lufthansa.

It was a short flight, no real service (which is okay). Very bumpy because of weather.

Very poor, flight cancelled, no help from Lufthansa customer service.

terrible. they cancelled the flight 1 day before flying out and just sent an email to inform the same. i had to scramble on my own paying more to find another flight.

Efficient boarding process. Staff are nice. Food should be better.

Good boarding experience, staff was very friendly. No entertainment was provided and vegan/veg food items did not taste good.

The flight was cancelled, and no reason was given. The flight was rebooked 3 days later. Calling customer service was next to impossible. There was no option to get in a queue in the phone call. It simply said all agents are busy call back later. It is 2024 and not 1970s to have such outdated technology. Live chat was even worse as I was 753 in line and it kept getting timed out. The icing on the cake was that the working hours was something like 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM? Really for international airline when the flights usually depart early in the morning? Things only got worse in the check-in counter in Mumbai. The monitor in the check-in counter said that the flight was on time even though it was cancelled. There were 2 agents helping a 747 full of passengers. It was 5:30 AM by the time I checked into the hotel. I tried reaching Kayak (Chatdeal via email) days before the onward flight from Seattle and no one cared to respond even after reminder. I will go with Expedia in the future. In fact, for my next trip to Japan I have already used Expedia.

You need to reimburse me for my seats purchased and luggage.

Very very poor. Reliability is the main issue. The flight from Bangalore to Frankfurt was delayed by 8 hours and hence we couldn’t make the flight from Frankfurt to St. Louis ( which was later canceled by Lufthansa ) . Bangalore airport lounge 080 is EXCELLENT. The shower in the lounge is first class. Wished they had some extendable lounge chairs for sleeping for the weary passengers. FRANKFURT AIRPORT IS HORRIBLE! WILL NEVER EVER FLY IN OR OUT OF FRANKFURT. There is no jetways for the Lufthansa flight and the bus took so long to reach the next terminal. We had to clear immigration and security checks again and again though we are transit travelers.

It was a short haul trip, so food and entertainment weren’t a big issue

The plane seemed very dated. The entertainment was very limited. There was a school group on our flight and the crew seemed bothered by them. They were not overly friendly or welcoming.

Ok, but no entertainment. Left late, but made up most of the time.

May be it is not an ITA issue, but the bags took long time to go out.

Good. But there food was poor quality and 95% of movies didn't have English subtitles

I thought they had rebranded themselves in every aspect but it was quite the opposite. The food was terrible the service was sub-par. Overall it was not a good experience.

Service from staff was poor, food choices were limited. Air plane was not clean or hygienic and seemed like not cleaned for days. Seats were uncomfortable.

service from stAff was barely there , food choices were limited. AirPlane was not clean and seemed like it was not cleaned for days.. Seats were very uncomfortable.

I paid for premium seats and the last minute they changed the aircraft for a bigger one, they bumped me to another seat which was NOT at all comfortable for an 11 hour flight, will fight for a refund!!

The landing was catastrophic. I was very scared. I thought it were my last lminues. Pilotes should be more experienced

Capri is somewhat of an onion.

That may sound like a strange analogy for one of the world’s most celebrated islands, but hear me out – for this luscious, rocky outcrop is more than a few layers deep.

The first layer, the tough and somewhat jarring one is the one that meets you first, hitting you smack-bang in the face when you first encounter the mass of fellow travellers who also teem to its enchanting shores.

Truth be told, I never really like Capri when I am first deposited off the ferry into the mêlée of tightly packed, tourist-filled bars that line the pier at Marine Grande. I’m not too fond of it either when I’m subjected to the anxiety-inducing elbow-bashing to make it onto the funicular and up to Capri’s Piazzetta.

When you get there the Piazzetta, too, is another area that is densely packed with bodies and noise during the day, as crowds heave their way through the minuscule centre-stage of Capri’s main town. But venture away from the main square and its hordes and something magical begins to happen.

The island of Capri is a fascinating tapestry, woven with threads of history, culture, and astonishing natural beauty and this is what you’ll uncover when you go deeper into its layers.

Venture away from the crowds to unravel the threads of its beauty, where you can unearth hidden coves and secluded beaches, where the water shimmers like a mirror and reflects the colours of an endlessly blue sky.

Venture deeper into the island, to trudge along Via Tiberio and ancient pathways, to unravel the threads of Capri’s past. These include ancient ruins, art and architecture and the stories of the island’s famous past residents.

Whispers of the island’s rich history, dating back to the time of the ancient Phoenicians, envelope you wherever you go and it’s easy to see how Capri has served as such a source of inspiration for poets, artists, and writers throughout history.

It’s not difficult to become entranced by the island’s character and identity. There is a pulse to this island and that is exactly what brings so many to its experience its cliff-etched majesty.

Capri has always been a magnetic place, one that in a way justifies its crowds – it’s just that the majority of these crowds descend upon the same places and many miss out on the same things.

In this comprehensive Capri travel guide, let us take you on a journey through one of Italy’s most beloved islands – a place where stunning scenery meets vibrant nightlife, delicious cuisine and timeless charm – so that you can learn how to uncover the island in a way that does it justice.

Visiting the picturesque island of Capri is an experience like no other – first and foremost, it is one of the most stunningly beautiful places in Europe. Its lush landscapes, dramatic cliffs and cobalt-blue waters create an atmosphere of pure relaxation and indulgence.

There is something about this idyllic island that seems to be timeless and it has managed to enchant travellers for centuries with its Mediterranean charm and romantic atmosphere.

The island’s coastline is dotted with hidden coves, grottoes and caves that can only be accessed by boat. In addition to its natural beauty, Capri also has a vibrant culture with exquisite cuisine, delightful shops and bustling nightlife.

When is the best time to visit Capri

The best time to visit Capri depends on your personal preferences and travel style. It has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers, as well as mild, rainy winters. June to August are the busiest months when temperatures can reach up to 30°C (86°F).

If you’re looking for few crowds and better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder season in April to May or September to October when temperatures are still comfortable. For those looking for the best deals and fewer crowds, November to March is the best time as prices tend to be lower.

How many days do you need in Capri

The number of days you’ll need to spend on Capri depends on your travel style and the activities you’d like to do while you’re there.

For sightseeing, you’ll need at least a few days to explore the main attractions like the Blue Grotto, the Gardens of Augustus, and the Belvedere of Tragara – these can’t all be seen in one day.

If relaxation is your main focus, then depending on when you visit, you might be able to get away with spending only a few days on the island, with a couple of sightseeing excursions dotted in between.

If you plan to explore more deeply and discover Capri’s hidden gems, then you’ll need a few more days so that you can experience everything the island has to offer – especially if you want a few days to laze in your swimwear.

Before you start booking things, spend time mapping out your trip carefully so you can maximize the experience and revel in all that this picturesque Italian isle has to offer.

Can Capri be done in one day?

It is possible to see some of the main sights of Capri in a single day, and I have done it a couple of times myself, but do bear in mind that it will likely be a very packed and rushed visit.

You’ll have to prioritise what it is you want to see, and you’ll also need to make peace with the fact that you won’t be able to see everything you want to.

Keep in mind that crowds can be heavy during peak season, so a day trip to Capri will be more pleasant when undertaken during the shoulder season to avoid crowds.

Overall, while it is possible to see some of the main sights of Capri in a single day, you’ll need more time to really get a feel for the place and explore the island more deeply. Ironically, however, most people do seem to visit Capri just as a day trip, but miss out on a lot in doing so.

Does Capri have a dress code

No specific dress code exists on the island of Capri, however with that being said it is still a very fashionable island, so if you’re the type who hates to be underdressed I would suggest picking out some nice outfits in advance.

However, you will also see plenty of people dressed in casual, comfortable clothing.

During the day, I would recommend that you wear stylish but comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking, as many of the attractions require some form of physical exertion in terms of getting between them.

At night it is more common to see people wearing smart casual attire. Generally speaking, Capri has a relaxed fashion sense so you don’t need to go too dressy unless you plan on visiting more upscale restaurants or bars.

Do take note that swimwear and beachwear are typically only worn at the beach or poolside – you won’t see people wandering around Capri’s Piazzetta or shops in bikinis and cover-ups.

Lightweight, breathable fabrics like linens and cotton are a good choice during the hot summer months, and you might also want to bring a sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.

A brief history of Capri

The azure waters surrounding Capri have long been a source of captivating mystique, drawing people to its shores throughout the centuries. As a result, the island carries a storied past.

Ancient Greeks and Romans

The Greeks first settled on Capri from the 8th century onwards, evidenced by the buildings of the Phoenician Steps that connect Marina Grande with Anacapri. Until Emperor Augustus bartered it for Ischia, a nearby island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Capri served as a Greek colony.

Augustus uncovered signs of earlier inhabitants – remains of stone tools, weapons, and animal remains found at his villa suggest that the island was inhabited some 12,000 years ago.

It is believed that Capri’s first occupants were farmers and fishers, who moved here in search of fertile soil and good fishing waters.

Emporer Tiberius succeeded Augustus and during his reign, he spent the last ten years of his life on Capri, secluding himself from the dangers he perceived to be in Rome. Under Tiberius’ rule, twelve villas were constructed across the island to accommodate an increased influx of visitors.

He also built Villa Jovis, his personal residence which was situated in a secluded spot and heavily guarded to protect him from potential assassination attempts, the sprawling ruins of which can still be visited today.

Following Tiberius’ death, the island of Capri remained a sparsely visited retreat for the privileged few, although it was somewhat visited and inhabited by Roman nobles up through the 4th century AD – during his rule, Emperor Commodus banished his wife and sister there as punishment.

Capri then fell into relative obscurity.

After the Romans

After the fall of Rome, Capri returned under the rule of Naples and suffered various attacks from pirates and raiders over time. The island was then controlled by different rulers such as Longobards, Normans, Angevins, Aragonese, Spanish, French and British before returning to Napoli in 1815.

An interesting event during this period was the 17th-century plague. It killed 300 people out of Capri’s modest population of 755.

This led to the locals throwing dead bodies over the monastery walls as revenge for not helping them during the crisis. The monks had holed themselves up in safety when the plague struck, choosing not to help the local population.

The ‘rediscovery’ of Capri

In the 18th century, Capri experienced a period of renewed good fortune with many tourists visiting it due to its magnificently primitive nature. Sadly, this also led to the plundering of its extensive Roman ruins leaving only a few traces behind today.

When news of the discovery of the enchanting Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) spread around the globe, tourists flocked to Capri for its pleasant climate, hospitality and stunning vistas.

Writers, painters and exiles chose it as their year-round or seasonal residence; constructing villas which lent fame to this island paradise and cemented its legendary status.

Capri’s cultural reawakening

The island’s cultural reawakening began around 1800 and it quickly attracted the attention of European artists and intellectuals, who were enticed by its stunning climate, location and natural wonders.

This led to a peaceful invasion of the island by English, American and German tourists, who helped provide the necessary infrastructure to welcome travellers.

During the 19th century, the island became popular among wealthy gay men and lesbian tourists for its more liberal social attitudes, serving as a safe refuge when attitudes towards homosexuality were sadly very intolerant.

This trend continued into the 20th century with numerous European artists, writers and celebrities making Capri their holiday destination of choice.

In addition to these creative figures, Capri was also home to several political exiles during this period, including Maxim Gorki and Lenin in the early 1900s, followed by poet Pablo Neruda in the 1950s. So Capri had truly become an island of diverse cultures and unparalleled beauty.

Its popularity continues to this day, with tourists from all over the world flocking to experience its unique charm.

Lasting for more than two centuries, Capri’s cultural revival has transformed the island into one of Europe’s must-visit destinations . It is a place of pristine beauty and remarkable history, making it an iconic destination for tourists interested in experiencing its rich culture firsthand.

Must-see sights on Capri

Uncovering the idyll of Capri is an experience like no other; from its astounding shoreline to its ancient remnants and designer stores, this lush island bursts with natural splendour and cultural history (with a good dollop of Insta-worthy glitz and glamour thrown into the mix).

For those seeking an exquisite escape, however, there are some particular highlights that you won’t want to miss out on.

The Blue Grotto | This iconic sea cave is a natural wonder, renowned for its luminescent blue waters that dance and sparkle in the sunlight. Visitors can take a leisurely boat tour to explore the cave and marvel at the ethereal beauty of the underwater light show.

Villa Jovis | This ancient Roman villa, perched atop a clifftop, offers breathtaking vistas of the island and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Once the residence of the infamous Emperor Tiberius, the villa is open to visitors and provides a portal to step back in time and imagine the grandeur of Imperial Rome.

Piazza Umberto I | Also known as the “Piazzetta,” this charming square is the heart of Capri town and is surrounded by chic shops, cafes, and bars, where visitors can indulge in a leisurely aperitivo while taking in the island’s vibrant ambience.

The Faraglioni | These three natural sea stacks are one of the island’s most iconic landmarks and can be seen from many vantage points on the island.

One of the most iconic things to do in Capri is to take a boat tour to witness the impressive geological formations up close and personal (and to get some Instagrammable shots from the deck of your boat).

The Gardens of Augustus | This idyllic garden, nestled on the hillside above Marina Grande, offers panoramic views of the island and the sea.

The garden is a verdant oasis, filled with Mediterranean plants and flowers, and while it may sound like the ideal spot to enjoy a picnic I would, unfortunately, counsel you to forget about this during busy times, as the garden is rather heavily frequented by fellow visitors to the island.

The Certosa di San Giacomo | This 14th-century monastery is now home to a museum that showcases some precious works of art and is open to visitors.

The Marina Piccola | A secluded natural bay and small beach located on the south side of the island, surrounded by towering cliffs, offering a picturesque and peaceful setting.

Villa Lysis | This opulent villa, once the residence of French poet and writer Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen, is open to visitors and offers a glimpse into the island’s glamourous and somewhat quirky past.

The villa boasts beautiful gardens and terraces with stunning sea views, allowing visitors to indulge in the luxurious lifestyle of the island’s elite. Located close to Villa Jovis, it’s very easy to combine a visit to both of these spots.

Villa San Michele | This charming villa, once the residence of Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe, is a beautiful museum that is open to visitors.

The villa offers a rich cultural experience, with its beautiful gardens, stunning sea views, and a collection of art and artefacts that provide insight into the island’s history and heritage.

The Phoenician Steps | A trail steeped in history, once used by the ancient Phoenicians to get between the port of Marina Grande with Anacapri, and still in use today.

The trail is challenging and there are 921 steps in total, so with that in mind, we would recommend that you only do this route if travelling downhill!

The Migliera | A scenic trail that leads to an observation deck with sweeping views of the sea and the island’s coastline. The trail is easy to follow, taking around 30 minutes to complete, making it the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Swimming | The island’s crystal clear waters offer the perfect opportunity to take a dip and refresh yourself. Take your pick from the many beaches and coves on the island.

Top restaurants in Capri

There are many great places to eat on the island of Capri, but here is a short list of Cultured Voyages’ picks to get you started:

Da Giorgio – located just off the main Piazzetta in Capri with views over the Gulf of Naples. A traditional affair and very well priced for Capri! Call in advance to reserve a table with a view.

La Capannina – this 1930’s trattoria is a real gem, housed under an archway in Capri town. Having hosted endless personalities over the years, you can expect regional Caprese dishes and a very professional service. It catered very well for my gluten-free requirements too.

Lo Sfizio – if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Capri town, then head to this low-key restaurant on Via Tiberio. Expect authentic Italian cooking with regional dishes and pizza on the menu.

Da Paolino – you’ve probably already seen pictures of this restaurant on Instagram. Located in a beautiful outdoor courtyard beneath a fragrant canopy of lemon trees, this is a unique setting for a romantic outdoor meal.

La Zagara – offering the Anacapri alternative should you wish to dine under a canopy of lemon trees, La Zagara is an upscale restaurant with meals falling more under the fine dining category – it’s perfect for a special occasion or a fancier meal out.

Giorgio al Cucciolo – this is the place to come to if you’re seeking out dinner with some insane views to go on the side. Expect plenty of seafood dishes on a menu that encompasses both the sea and the land and an extremely romantic setting for dinner.

l’Olivo – if you seek a high-end, white cloth experience then look no further than the two Michelin-starred l’Olivo, which is located at the Capri Palace in Anacapri. The kitchen is headed by a native of Ischia and the menu borrows from local traditions, presenting them in a contemporary way.

Local specialities and dishes on Capri to try

Local pasta dishes.

In terms of pasta, local specialities include ravioli Caprese and scialatielli, both made with simple ingredients like flour and water for a light but delicious pasta dish.

On Capri, every eatery serves a mouth-watering ravioli dish that is packed with delicious ingredients like Parmigiano and aged caciotta cheese, marjoram, and fresh tomato basil sauce. Scialatielli, on the other hand, is thick, ribbon-like pasta that’s often served with seafood or sautéed vegetables.

Look out for spaghetti alla Nerano too, where pasta is tossed with zucchini and cheese – it makes for a very palatable lunchtime dish.

Local seafood dishes

A common fish found off the shores of Capri is red seabream ( pezzogna in Italian), which will be prepared “ all’acqua pazza”, which includes a tasty mixture of cherry tomatoes, parsley, olive oil and garlic.

Look out too for the ever-popular l’impepata di cozze , which is a simple way of serving mussels. The basic recipe allows for pepper, but you may well also see parsley and of course, olive oil, added to the ingredient list.

Shrimp, too, is a common item seen on menus in Capri, as they are farmed nearby from the sea floor off the island.

For optimum enjoyment, pair your seafood dishes with a light white wine. Excellent wines native to this region include Falanghina del Sannio or Lacrima Christi from Vesuvius.

Insalata Caprese

When you come to the source, then make sure that you don’t miss out on sampling their popular Italian classic – Caprese salad!

With luscious tomatoes, velvety mozzarella and fragrant basil leaves artfully combined together, it’s a simple yet scrumptious recipe where good quality ingredients really come to the fore.

It’s believed that the salad was first served in the 1950s at a restaurant in Capri and has since become a symbol of Italian cuisine.

To create a complete Capri dining experience, make sure that you finish your meal with the distinctive liqueur of limoncello . This zesty, lemon-based liqueur embodies Italian hospitality and adds a sweet yet tart flavour that perfectly ends your meal.

Crafted with locally harvested lemons, limoncello is an essential part of Capri cuisine and is usually served in small glasses as a delightful digestif after dinner has concluded. If you want to go the whole hog, then order a torta caprese as dessert after your dinner, which is a local chocolate and almond cake!

The designer shopping on Capri is as diverse as the island itself, with a wide range of designers and boutiques packed within a very dense triangular area from the Piazzetta to Via Camerelle and Via Le Botteghe.

Those in search of luxury brands will find themselves in shopping heaven and the stores are well aware of this – during the summer season, shops open until late in the evening in a bid to capture a captive audience.

As well as the designer boutiques that Capri has become renowned for, amongst the island’s winding streets and ancient stone buildings you’ll find many artisanal producers.

With their skilled hands and discerning taste, local artisans produce a range of products that are unique to the island of Capri.

Capri sandals

Capri sandals are world-renowned for their craftsmanship and unique style. It all started in the 1950s when Jackie Kennedy, a fashion icon of the time, was seen wearing Capri sandals on her now-famous trip to Italy.

This image of her with her feet encased in handmade leather sandals inspired a generation of both fashionable and functional footwear.

Today, the artisans of Capri continue to perfect their craft, producing sandals that are renowned for their quality and comfort. The leather used is tanned with local plants and herbs, creating an array of rich colours which reflect the island’s natural beauty.

The result is a unique style – smooth curves and soft leather that hugs the foot – and an enduring symbol of chic Italian style.

Whether you are looking for a functional pair of sandals, or simply want to take a piece of Capri with you, these timeless pieces reflect the island’s distinct spirit of summer and in my opinion, are one of the best things to take home with you in your suitcase!

Capri is also famous for its artisanal perfumes , which are created with the utmost care and attention to detail. It’s a wonderful way to remember your time in Capri by, as each unique scent aims to capture the essence of the island’s natural beauty.

The ingredients used are often sourced from the local area to create unique scents that are found nowhere else.

The perfumes contain a blend of essential oils, such as lemon and orange blossom, as well as essential oils derived from the island’s native plants and herbs. As such, they evoke a sense of place and capture the essence of Capri in a bottle – truly one of a kind.

Limoncello , the illustrious lemon spirit from Capri, is also an ideal memento to impart your magical Italian experience with family and friends once you get home. The liqueur is made with the zest of Sorrento lemons that are steeped in alcohol for up to a month.

Not only does the refreshing taste of limoncello make it an ideal accompaniment to dessert, but its light and refreshing flavour also serves as a perfect way to conclude any meal as a palate cleanser.

While, in my opinion, you’ll find a better choice along the Amalfi Coast and specifically in towns such as Vietri sul Mare and Ravello, if you don’t plan on visiting these then I’d suggest keeping an eye out for some ceramic items to bring home.

If you wrap them well and take them in your hand luggage they will make it home in one piece (speaking from experience!) and it’s lovely to have something like a bowl or espresso cup to remind you of your Campanian travels for years into the future.

Transport options & essential information

How to get to capri.

There are several ways to get to the island of Capri, depending on your starting point. Outside of a private boat or a helicopter, then your route to Capri will involve taking a ferry . Always ensure to book these in advance, which you can do here.

Here are the most common journeys to Capri, along with approximate travel times:

From Naples | The quickest way to reach Capri from Naples is by ferry. Ferries depart regularly from the port of Naples (Molo Beverello), and the journey takes from 40-50 minutes, depending on what service you choose.

There are also large, slower ferries that depart Naples via the port at Calata di Massa which take 80 minutes or so, but there is likely no need for you to take one of these.

(Note: these ferries do sometimes run in more inclement weather when the faster ferries have been cancelled, so you may need to take one if you need to get to Capri or Naples on a given day and don’t mind a rather choppy journey).

From Ischia | There are several ferry services that operate between Ischia and Capri, with the journey taking around 1 hour. It’s a very enjoyable journey, with some incredible scenery and you also get to pass by the island of Procida on the way.

From Sorrento | Ferries depart regularly from Sorrento and the journey is typically a mere 20-30 minutes.

From Positano | There are seasonal ferries that run from April to the end of October that connects Positano directly to Capri. The journey time is as short as 30 minutes.

It’s worth noting that the frequency of the boats and hydrofoils may vary depending on the season and weather conditions. Also, it’s recommended to check schedules and book in advance, especially during peak season.

How to get around Capri

Exploring the beauty of Capri can be done in a variety of ways, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

Bus | An affordable and practical way to explore Capri is by utilizing the island’s public transport system, with buses travelling between its main villages.

These petite buses wind their way up and down the hilly roads of Capri – be warned that with their petite size comes a restriction on the number of passengers they can take at a time, so you may have to wait in line for a while before it’s your turn.

Taxis | Taxis are a convenient and comfortable way to get around the island, especially if you’re travelling with a group or have a lot of luggage and they’re also rather cool, with their retro colours and convertible hoods.

They can be found at the port and main square, but do bear in mind that they are rather pricey.

Funicular | The funicular is a cable car that connects Capri town with Marina Grande, the main port of the island. This is a quick and easy way to reach the port and the beaches of Marina Grande from Capri town and vice versa when you first arrive on the island.

Tickets cost €2.20 and should be purchased in advance. Please be aware that the Marina Grande ticket office is not situated at the entrance to the funicular, rather it can be found on your right at the end of the arrival pier.

Should you need to move large suitcases, an additional supplement ticket must be purchased.

Boat | One of the best ways to explore the island is by boat. You can take a boat tour around the island, which will give you the opportunity to see the coastline and the famous landmarks of Capri, such as the Faraglioni and the Grotta Azzurra.

You can also rent a boat, which is a fun and flexible way to get around and explore the island’s many hidden coves and beaches.

Scooter | For those seeking to explore the island’s many backroads and remote areas at their own leisure, a scooter rental is an excellent choice. However, it is important to keep in mind that these roads can be curvy and narrow, so make sure you’re confident when it comes to driving a scooter.

Walking | Exploring the many gems of Capri is a breeze when you take advantage of its size and walk! Many spots, such as beaches and attractions, are within easy walking distance from Anacapri or Capri’s main town. Going on foot is an excellent way to get up close and personal with the island.

You will not be able to hire or drive a car on the island of Capri, as tourists are prohibited from doing so.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most stunning stretches of coastline in Italy, and it’s a must-visit when you’re exploring the Mediterranean from Capri.

A day trip to this area could bring you to four picturesque towns: Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Sorrento, where you will be enchanted by the terraced cliff-side villages with brightly coloured houses and cobblestoned streets.

You could combine a day trip to Amalfi and Ravello, but I’d recommend doing both Positano and Sorrento as separate locations in their own right, or else you’d have a stressful day of running around.

Visiting Pompeii as a day trip from Capri is well worth it, and you’ll find yourself immersed in the remarkable ruins of Ancient Roman times. It’s a great way to get closer to Rome’s past without having to travel further than an hour or so away from the island.

With a guided tour, you’ll be able to delve into the fascinating history of the city, with its perfectly preserved frescoes, impressive amphitheatre and stunning art galleries.

As you wander around the ruins, you’ll be able to imagine how life must have been at this bustling port before it was covered in ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Mount Vesuvius National Park

Mount Vesuvius National Park is an incredible day trip from Capri, where you can explore one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. It’s the only active volcano on the European mainland and offers spectacular views of the Bay of Naples below you.

At Mount Vesuvius, you can climb the volcano up to its crater, where you can marvel at the impressive display of smoke and steam coming from within. I’d recommend taking the hydrofoil to Sorrento and then either taking a train or taxi from Sorrento to Pompeii, where you can then get a bus up to Vesuvius.

A day trip to Naples from Capri is an absolute must-do. The city is vibrant and chaotic, with a rich history that can be felt everywhere.

You’ll find iconic sights such as Castel sant’Elmo – the 13th-century castle perched atop a hill in the old centre of town – and San Gennaro Cathedral – the city’s main church, to be well worthy of your time.

Be sure to also visit Spaccanapoli – the street that runs through the historic centre of Naples and is lined with charming shops, cafes and churches. Make sure, too, to sample some of the city’s world-famous pizza.

Herculaneum

Herculaneum is an often overlooked but no less impressive archaeological site located near Naples , and it makes for a great day trip from Capri.

Although it’s less well known than Pompeii, Herculaneum is no less fascinating – the ruins of this ancient Roman town are remarkably well-preserved, giving visitors a unique opportunity to travel back in time and explore this ancient civilisation.

You can wander through the ruins of houses, shops, theatres and baths that were destroyed and marvel at the intricate frescoes and mosaics that have been preserved here – evidence of life in the bustling port town before it was buried by volcanic ash.

A guided tour of the ruins will help you to really appreciate this archaeological site and uncover its secrets.

BOOK | Buy skip-the-line tickets here , or take a tour with an archaeologist (highly recommended)

Ischia is a volcanic island off the coast of Naples and a great day trip from Capri. This lush Mediterranean paradise is known for its thermal spas and hot springs, which have been used by locals for centuries to relax and soothe their tired bodies.

You could spend your day here enjoying some much-needed relaxation in one of the thermal spas, or you could explore some of Ischia’s cultural delights, such as the impressive Castello Aragonese.

Another popular attraction is La Mortella Gardens, which has been beautifully landscaped with exotic plants, sculptures and fountains.

The views from this garden are simply stunning and they totally knocked me for seven – you’ll be able to take in the breathtaking views of the island and the surrounding sea, as well as get lost in the creativity and vision of the gardens.

A totally different vibe from nearby Capri, Ischia is well worth a visit (or a longer stay, in fact).

Not to be forgotten is the beautiful island of Procida, located just off the coast of Naples and 20 minutes away by ferry to neighbouring Ischia. This small island was chosen as Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2002 and is known for its vibrant port town with brightly coloured buildings tumbling down to the sea.

There’s plenty to explore here and its diminutive size makes it easy to get lost amidst cobblestoned streets lined with traditional bakeries, trattorias and gelaterias.

The people of Procida are also known for their warm hospitality and it’s easy to spend an afternoon chatting with the locals and discovering more about this unique island.

Make reservations

It’s essential to make reservations on Capri in advance if you want to be sure that you don’t miss out on any of the island’s popular eateries or excursions.

Restaurants and other attractions can quickly become overcrowded during peak season, so it pays to plan ahead and to start making reservations for things that you have your heart set on doing well in advance.

Pack for the weather

The island’s weather can be quite hot during the summer months, so it’s a good idea to pack lightweight, breathable clothing. Also pack a sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.

Sunscreen and a hat are also essential items to protect yourself from the sun’s rays while you’re off enjoying all that Capri has to offer during the day. I’d also take along some more glamourous outfits for evening time, or some chic beachwear if you plan on hitting some beach clubs.

Be prepared for crowds

Capri can get extremely crowded during peak season, with tourists flocking to the island from all over the world.

To avoid the crowds and make sure that you’re able to fully appreciate all that Capri has to offer, I’d suggest planning your visit around the busy times and visiting popular attractions early in the morning or late in the day.

Also, it’s incredible how many people congregate around Capri’s main square, the Piazzetta. As a general rule, to avoid the crowds on Capri I suggest walking away from this busy area and you’ll be amazed at how the hordes seem to dissipate!

Plan ahead for the ferry

Planning ahead for the ferry to Capri is an incredibly important step in making sure that you get the most out of your time on the island.

The journey from the mainland to Capri can be quite crowded, especially during peak season when everyone wants to get there as quickly as possible. To ensure that you have a comfortable and stress-free journey, book your tickets in advance and arrive at the port early.

Bear in mind too that whatever luggage you’re planning on bringing with you will have to come on the ferry too – so make sure you’re comfortable with (and able to) drag it on and off the ferry with you with relative ease!

If you’re prone to seasickness like I am, make sure to take an anti-nausea tablet before getting on the ferry and try to sit close to the back – it makes a big difference, I promise you.

BOOK | Book ferry tickets here .

Consider the terrain

The cobbles and hilly streets on the island of Capri can be difficult to navigate if you’re not wearing appropriate footwear. Without the right shoes, walking around the island will be an uncomfortable experience, and it’ll take much longer as well.

Make sure to bring comfy flats with you for exploring – either lightweight trainers or some secure sandals that have a bit of support and grip. If you want to bring some heels for the evening, a block or wedge heel would be a much better idea than stilettos if you’re planning on leaving your hotel!

Get off the beaten path

Capri is a truly magical island filled with plenty of hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path places to explore. One of the best ways to experience the island is to take a walk and explore its less-travelled pathways.

Walk up winding alleyways, discover hidden restaurants tucked away in secret nooks and crannies, and stop by some of the quaint shops that line the streets. Take some time to simply wander, get lost in the beauty of Capri, and you’re sure to uncover something special.

Respect the locals

I would say that respecting the locals who live in Capri is of utmost importance when visiting this beautiful island. This island is not merely a place where you go on vacation and the crowds can make you easily forget that there is a local population who go to school, raise their families and make a living on the island.

Not only should you be mindful of their behaviour, but take time to appreciate the culture and history that forms a part of Capri’s local identity. Try to purchase souvenirs from local vendors, and try out some of the traditional cuisine in smaller local restaurants that are a little off the beaten track.

Take that boat tour

Taking a boat tour of the stunning island of Capri is definitely an experience you don’t want to miss. Not only can you take in some of the most beautiful scenery that Italy has to offer, but this type of tour also allows you to discover hidden gems and explore hidden coves that are only accessible by boat.

A boat tour is also a great way to observe the wildlife in the area, as you can often spot dolphins and fish swimming nearby. Plus, if you’re lucky enough to be visiting during the summer months then many of these tours come with a complimentary glass of Prosecco – what more could one ask for?

BOOK | Search for and book a boat tour here

Take a chairlift for the ultimate views

Taking a chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro is one of the best ways to experience the breathtaking views of Capri and its stunning surroundings.

From the top of this 589-meter-high mountain, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama that stretches from Mount Vesuvius all the way across to Sorrento, Naples, and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

On a clear day, the views from this vantage point will take your breath away and it is definitely a sight that you won’t soon forget.

Capri is expensive

Capri is an expensive destination, but there are ways to keep costs down if you’re looking for a budget-friendly visit.

To start with, it’s best to stay away from the most touristy spots – such as the harbour area – and head towards more off-the-beaten-path areas of the island. Here, you’ll find smaller, family-run restaurants with fantastic local dishes for a fraction of the price.

If you’re looking to stay on the island and not just a day trip from nearby cities, then it’s best to book accommodation at least a few months in advance as prices can skyrocket during peak season.

Additionally, you don’t have to fork out on expensive transport or things to do – stick to exploring the island on foot as there are plenty of free activities available.

Guide to Capri

Guide to Capri

On the Amalfi coast in the Gulf of Naples is a beautiful little island. Tucked away in the Campania region in Italy , Capri’s charm is right out of a glamorous Hollywood set. The island is adorned with white-paved walkways, palm trees and plush resorts with people diving into swimming pools overlooking the cliff. Thanks to the numerous designer boutiques smattered across the landscape and beautiful women strutting about in pointed heels, this picturesque island welcomes nearly 50,000 tourists a day during summer!

Getting there

A speck on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this island is a day trip from Naples. There are hydrofoils plying from the port of Molo Beverello (Naples) to Capri, and it takes about 40 minutes.

Marina Grande is the Port of Capri Island and from here, take a funicular ride up to the centre of Capri town, the Piazzetta.

Gardens with a view

Capri is a fairly large island covering about 10.5 kms with a hilly terrain. Getting around without a map would be akin to walking in a maze! At the top of a flight of stairs at the Piazzettais the charming Church of Santo Stefano. Built in baroque-style architecture, this is the principal place of worship in Capri town. The winding, steep paths, lined with pretty coffee-shops and restaurants, lead you to Giardini di Augusto (Gardens of Augustus). These botanical gardens , with their ornate floral decorations, a fountain and marble statues (including one of Lenin) overlook the striking blue water-front, and are a welcome delight for tourists beaten down by the Italian summer.

German industrialist and marine biologist, Friedrich Alfred Krupp fell in love with Capri during one of his visits and funded a pave-way in the early 1900’s to connect the gardens to Marina Piccola. Considered a piece of architectural and engineering genius by Emilio Mayer, eight sharp switchbacks were made by cutting through rock. After a hiatus of over 30 years, owing to falling rocks, Via Krupp – the sinuous curves leading to the water front – was opened in 2008 to the public. Alfred Krupp’s eternal symbol of liberty and homage to the beauty of nature is honoured with a plaque.

Monte Tiberio and Anacapri

At the north-eastern end of the island lies an isolated Villa Jovis, one of the twelve imperial villas built by Emperor Tiberius in Capri, who ruled from this island during his last ten years, somewhere during 30 AD. It is believed that the Emperor used to transmit messages to the administration in Rome through the lighthouse beside this villa. A little walk away from the villa, standing at a height of 335 metres is Monte Tiberio. Some say the Emperor’s servants jumped off from this point to escape his tyranny.

You can also make a trip to Anacapri by bus, located about 150 metres above Capri.  Unless you are afraid of heights, don’t miss the chairlift ride up to Monte Solaro for a breathtaking view of the coast. From Anacapri, you can head to Punta Carena, the tallest lighthouse on the island.

The electrifying sea-cave

The star attraction of the island is Grotta Azzurra, also known as the blue cave. Sunlight comes in to this sea cave through an underwater opening, thus giving it an eerie, electrifying blue shade. It is said that this once used to be Emperor Tiberius’ private bathing pool. The opening to the cave is only about two metres wide and two metres high. However, the cave itself is about 80 metres wide and deep. “Sit at the bottom of the boat, bend backwards and lie flat,” your tour guidewill warn as you enter the cave in small row boats.

As the boat-men hum along Italian songs in the blue cave, one can’t help but wish for a private pool as magical as this one!

Travel tips

Capri is filled with luxury resorts, villas and bed and breakfast lodges. It is a lavish holiday destination, so be prepared for higher-than-expected tariffs and costs. Even a map of the island isn’t free!

Getting around Capri is fairly easy, owing to a regular bus service. One can also rent a car or scooter to move around.

Trying to plan the perfect day trip to Capri? In this post you’ll find all the info you need regarding ferries and tours, plus the ideal one day in Capri itinerary.

Capri is a small, stunning island off the coast of Naples that’s particularly known for its rugged, steep cliffs and scenic landscape. Its natural attractions, paired with high-end shopping boutiques, dining venues, and fabulous villas make it the ultimate destination to soak in the beauty of Naples Bay without renouncing top-notch facilities.

Very popular as a luxurious holiday destination, the island’s gems are in fact its glistening blue waters , the splendid Blue Grotto, its gardens, and viewpoints, all of which you’ll be able to appreciate on a day trip to Capri.

Read on to discover the ideal itinerary for your day on the island, plus info on how to get there and which tours to look into if you’re unwilling to do the trip on your own. Read on!

HOW TO GET TO CAPRI

So, how do you get to Capri ? If you’re making the day trip on your own, you’ll have to plan the transfers to and from the island. The only way to arrive in Capri is by sea , so you’ll have to take a ferry regardless of where you’re coming from. However, you might also need to take a train or bus to get to the ferry station.

Let’s see more in detail how to make the journey from the major cities in the area.

Day Trip from Sorrento to Capri

Sorrento is a great departure point to visit Capri , as the ferries depart from its port , Marina Piccola, almost every half hour in the summer months. The journey takes no longer than 30 minutes, and tickets cost around 25€ each way.

Day Trip from Positano to Capri

Coming from Positano instead? Then the ferry journey is also fairly simple , as during the season there are quite a few daily crossings between the town and the island. The trip takes 30-40 minutes, and tickets cost approximately 25€.

Day Trip from Amalfi to Capri

From Amalfi (Amalfi Coast) to Capri there are also direct ferry crossings during the season, and although they’re not as frequent as in Positano, you can expect 4 to 5 ferries a day. The journey takes 50 minutes and tickets cost anywhere between 15€ and 25€.

Day Trip from Naples to Capri

Naples also has direct ferries to Capri . The trip takes around 50 minutes, and the standard price is also 25€, although you can find cheaper tickets if you’re going on the slow boat, or pricier ones depending on the season or time of day.

Day Trip from Rome to Capri

Rome is the farthest away from Capri, so the trip requires a little bit more planning. You’ll first have to make your way to Sorrento , and then catch the ferry to the island from there. You can easily get into the coastal town with the Circumvesuviana train, which takes a little over an hour to make the journey and costs 5€ each way.

Marina Grande will be your first stop on the island, as it’s where the ferry arrives, so it’s a great starting point for your Capri visit . The Marina Grande features colorful houses and very picturesque fishing boats by the beach, honoring its past as a thriving fishing village.

The harbor and village are sheltered from the elements in a beautiful natural bay and offer a myriad of cafés, restaurants, and boutiques to shop around.

Take a Boat Tour of Capri

If you’re visiting independently, I still suggest you book a little boat tour around the island as I did. It’s one of the most enjoyable things to do in Capri, Italy.

Have a Spritz at Piazzetta

Piazzetta is often referred to as  the world’s living room, as it’s the heart of Capri’s social life. It’s where everything happens , and where anyone who wants to see or be seen is, including the celebrities who vacation on the island.

Image of Piazzetta, Capri's main square, featuring restaurant seating areas and a yellow building in the back

While nowadays the island’s social life revolves around it , La Piazzetta has always been the center of activity in Capri as it served as a major market square before becoming a place to socialize with a coffee or drink.

The 17th-century Church of Santo Stefano, the astounding Clock Tower, and the cafes on the square’s corners are the main attractions at Piazzetta, besides the people you may get to spot there.

It’s the island’s ultimate spot for an authentic Italian aperitivo , so grab a table at one of the charming cafes, and sip on your spritz as you people-watchon the world’s most glamorous square.

To get to Piazzetta, whose official name is Piazza Umberto I, you can either walk or take the cable car from Marina Grande . I recommend the latter option, as you’ll be granted amazing views of the island as you go up.

Soak Up the Views at the Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto)

A woman posing in a viewpoint in Capri, with the rugged coastline, rock formations and the sea in the background

Giardini di Augusto, also known as Krupp Gardens, are botanical gardens strategically located high up on the island , boasting incredible views. The panoramic gardens are a masterpiece on their own though, and absolutely worth a visit.

The gardens are designed on level terraces that overlook the sea , each of them featuring a specific kind of plant or flower. Besides housing all of Capri’s native flora, the giardini have all sorts of colorful flowers and splendid, lush vegetation that makes it seem an oasis.

There are not only plants, though, but sculptures and historic monuments ; paired with the views, it becomes one of the absolutely unmissable attractions in Capri .

Take a Photo of Via Krupp

Image of Via Krupp seen from above, an unmissable attraction to enjoy during a day trip to Capri

Via Krupp connects the Augustus Gardens with Marina Piccola , meandering on the cliffside and covering close to 328 feet (100 meters) of elevation difference. It was built by German Alfred Krupp , who wanted an easier access to his home up the hill from the port.

The road is now closed, but it’s still quite a sight to be seen, with its rounded turns and the vibrant blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the background, and an iconic image of the island of Capri .

After you’re done visiting the Krupp Gardens, make sure you make a stop to snap a picture of the road!

Be Mesmerized by Via Tragara and Belvedere Tragara

A woman posing in the very narrow Vis Tragari, and in the background there's the Mediterranean Sea, and the rugged coastline of Capri island

Via Tragara is a very historic and incredibly scenic pathway, considered one of the most beautiful promenades in Capri. At times it’s fringed by luxurious villas, hidden behind concrete or vegetation walls, and it takes you through archways and narrow alleys, offering a very pretty walk that ends with incredible views of the Faraglioni .

Besides spotting the famous rocks that emerge from the sea, you’ll catch sight of part of the Amalfi Coast in the distance, and the island’s cliffs and bay as you stand in Belvedere Tragara , the lookout at the end of the  Via . Even if you’re spending one day on Capri, I recommend you check it out.

Head to Anacapri

There are two towns on the island, Capri Town and Anacapri . Anacapri is relatively small,  and it’s situated on an elevated position, higher than Capri town, which grants it beautiful, broad views of the bay and the rest of the island.

Besides the scenery, it prides itself in  being home to a few important historic sites , like Villa San Michele, which is the second reason to visit the town. Contrasting Capri’s main town, with its bustle and tourist-focused eateries and boutiques, Anacapri is much more tranquil as it’s mostly a residential area.

Walking around Anacapri is the best way to explore it, so don’t worry about getting lost and wander confidently on its charming streets.

While there is a zigzagging road that connects Anacapri with the port, back in the day it was only reachable by a staircase of over 900 steps that still exists today.

Unless you’re up for the workout, to get to Anacapri you’ll either need to take the bus or a taxi . To take the bus, you’ll have to walk back to the bus station which is steps away from Piazzetta. The journey takes around 15 minutes.

If You Still Have Time: Take the Chairlift to Mount Solaro or…

Mount Solaro is Capri’s highest point, located over 1900 feet above sea level. Understandably, it’s  where you’ll get the most breathtaking views of the island .

A lovely terrace with sunchairs and a restaurant will greet you at the top, so you can sit with a refreshing drink to enjoy the sweeping panorama before you, and relax after a day of explorations.

To get there you’ll have to take the chairlift from Anacapri . It takes less than 15 minutes to make the journey, and the roundtrip tickets cost around 15€.

Visit Villa San Michele

Villa San Michele is Anacapri’s gem . Built in the early 1900s, it’s the dream home of Axel Munthe, a Swedish physician based in Capri who designed the villa to resemble a Greek temple . Prioritizing its luminosity, he created a very open house that faces the ocean and magnificently overlooks the island’s bay.

Besides its beautiful architecture, Villa San Michele boasts a fantastic art and sculpture collection , mostly of Egyptian and Etruscan origin, and hosts cultural events in the summer. Concerts, film festivals, and literary encounters are some of the events that take place every year.

To head back to Marina Grande to catch the ferry, you can take the bus or a taxi . Buses are often very crowded in the late afternoon and it can be hard to get in from the stop in Piazza Vittoria. Instead, you can walk to the previous stop at Viale Tommaso de Tommaso .

ONE DAY IN CAPRI FAQ

Yes, Capri can definitely be visited in one day, as it’s relatively small.

Absolutely yes. Capri is a gorgeous island on the Naples Bay and offers many natural attractions along with man-made landmarks worth checking out.

It’s definitely possible to get to Capri and explore it on your own.

It entirely depends on your budget and interests. There is no roof to how much you can spend, especially if you go shopping at the high-end boutiques and dine in the top restaurants, but you can enjoy a day in Capri for around $120 including round-trip transfers from the mainland, a boat trip on the island, and meals. Much less if you take snacks with you and skip the tour!

Take the public ferry to get there, use public transportation on the island or, even better, walk, and pack your food or have a light lunch instead of eating at a restaurant.  Boat tours can cost as little as $20, so that’s highly recommended even if you’re on a budget.

How to visit Capri island: best things to do in Capri + travel tips and map

All you need to know to plan a trip to Capri, Italy: how many days to spend in Capri, how to get there, Capri highlights, island best beaches and more!

The beautiful island of Capri is one of the most famous destinations in Italy and a place that is guaranteed to take your breath away with it beauty, whether you only have time to see Capri highlights or dig deeper into the island’s hidden gems.

Located just in front of Naples, it is a rocky island with stunning cliffs plunging into the deepest blue waters you can image.

It offers wonderful boating and swimming spots, pretty roads with cascading flowers and a romantic atmosphere that has made it a popular honeymoon spot for over 5 decades (including my own, this is where we came when we got married!).

Please note: this post contains affiliate links. Should you make a purchase, we might make a small commission.

Why visit Capri Italy

Capri is often mentioned as a glamorous, elegant island and indeed it is.

However, it is also much more than that.

Parts of Capri, such as the famous Piazzetta, are places to see and to be seen, where to show off your best outfits while sipping aperitivo .

Other areas such as Anacapri are quiet, understated and romantic and the other areas again are different again, perfect for kids, history lovers (Emperor Tiberius’ Villa is here).

All this makes Capri a wonderful destination and a place worth adding your your Italy itinerary .

These are my best tips for planning a trip to Capri in Italy.

I have been going to Capri consistently for many years thanks to a friend from there (Imagine, a family home in Anacapri! What a dream!) so these tips are based on my own experience and his family knowledge of the island.

Map of Capri highlights

How many days in Capri

The first thing to decide when planning a trip to Capri is how many days to stay.

I believe you need at least 2 days in Capri, so one night on the island. The best amount of time to spend in Capri to see the highlights without rushing is 3 days.

4 days or more of course ideal if you want to rest and relax.

More in detail:

If you only have one day in Capri, including transport from and to the mainland , you will be able to see some of the Capri highlights such as the blue grotto, see the center of Capri town or visit Anacapri.

This will be rather rushed and it likely to only allow you to see the busiest parts of Capri and leave you with a less than satisfactory experience

If you have one full day in Capri (excluding transport), I recommend you follow this one day in Capri itinerary , that will allow you to see as much as possible in a limited time.

If you have two full days in Capri , you can see Capri, Anacapri and take a tour of the island.

If you have 3 days in Capri , you can see Capri town, Anacapri, Tiberius’ Villa, take a boat tour of the island and get some time to relax on the beach.

If tou have even more time, you can explore all of the above, experience Capri beaches/ sea access spots and also have time for shopping and relaxation on Capri’s many wonderful terraces.

Best time to go to Capri

The best time to go to Capri is between May and September.

Late May, early June and early September are the best time to see the island with somewhat limited crowds while July and August get wonderful weather but high number of visitors (day trippers especially).

The best what to see Capri is to stay at least one night: once the day trippers are gone, the island is more manageable and pleasant.

How to get to Capri

You can get to Capri by catching the ferry or hydrofoil from Sorrento,  Naples and, in summer, additional locations on the Amalfi Coast such as Amalfi and Positano.

To get to Capri from Naples, you catch the hydrofoil from Naples Molo Beverello.

The crossing takes between 50min and 1h25mins depending on the boat. Between April and October the service is consistent and frequent.

Outside of the good season, the schedule is more limited.

To reach Capri from Sorrento, you catch the boat from Marina Piccola Sorrento and takes about 30 mins.

During the summer, additional routes are available from Amalfi, Positano, Salerno, Marioi and Ischia.

Schedules along these routes are more limited than from Naples and Sorrento so additional planning may be needed.

You can find all ferry schedules here (use the drop down menu to select departing town).

How to get around Capri

Capri has two main areas: Capri and Anacapri, Anacapri being the town at the top of the Capri Mountain, Capri being the one at the bottom.

As you arrive in Capri port, you will find the beach of Marina Grande and the cable car: this is the main access route to the town of Capri and by far the cheapest.

As an alternative, you can take a taxi to the area of Piazzetta however, please be advised that the cost is steep!

If your hotel is in Anacapri, there are buses that bring you there in a matter of minutes or you can avail of the free transfer shuttle service that many Anacapri hotels offer.

Please note : Capri is best discovered on foot. Vehicles of non residents are not allowed on the island in summer but even in winter, walking around is just easier due to the peculiar geography of the island. Parking is available in both Naples and Sorrento.

The best things to do in Capri – Capri highlights and hidden gems

Explore pretty anacapri town.

Anacapri is the small town at the top of the island and a is a picture perfect place with immense charm.

You reach Anacapri with a bus ride along a vertigo inducing yet very scenic bus ride and as you arrive, you get off in a place that is light years away from the bustling atmosphere of Capri port.

Anacapri is a delight of small streets, pretty piazzas, hidden courtyards and has a relax and slow paced atmosphere.

trip to capri from india

The center of Anacapri is car free and a lovely place for a stroll.

Here you find several shops where you can buy the typical Capri sandals and you will spot many decorative tiles, which are one of the peculiarities of the island.

They are used for house numbers, local maps and just as decorations and they add to the quintessential Mediterranean charm of the place.

In Anacapri, you find some of the main island attractions. Not to be missed are:

Church of San Michele – this is a baroque church worth visiting for its absolutely incredible flooring.

The floor is entirely covered in tiles with elaborate depictions of the garden of earthly delight by Leonardo Chiaiese.

The church is equipped with wooden boards to allow visiting without stepping onto the floor itself and there is also a small staircase that allows to see it in its entirety from above.

An absolute Capri must see, worth alone the climb up to Anacapri!

The red house – The Casa Rossa (red House) is, as the name suggest, a red house that ewas the home of American colonel John Clay McKowen and now hides a secret: inside, it contains treasures that were found in the Blue Grotto (technically, the Blue Grotto is in Anacapri)!

Villa San Michele – Villa San Michele is one of the most famous Capri attractions and a museum and garden worth seeing.

The Villa was home to Swedish Doctor Axel Munthe who built it so that it would ‘open to sun and wind and the voice of the sea, like a Greek temple, and light, light, light everywhere’ ( quote )

The villa is stunning and has an award winning garden that should not be missed

Here, a long shaded patio covered in flowers leads you to several scenic view points from where you can views of the bay framed by pretty columns  and finally opens up on a stunning terrace with views of the Gulf of Naples that are out of this world beautiful!

trip to capri from india

Marvel at the magical Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra)

The blue grotto is maybe the most famous of all attractions on Capri Island and it is well worth a visit.

The grotto is called ‘blue’ because of a very peculiar light effect that means its water shine in deep blue hues and objects, if submerged, acquire a distinct silver color!

The grotto is very popular and can only be visited joining a blue grotto tour. Private access is forbidden at all times and so is swimming. Some tours to consider are:

  • Capri island tour cruise + Blue grotto
  • Island of capri boat tour + Blue Grotto

Need to know : boat tours of the island usually do not include entrance to the blue grotto, charged separately. Please read carefully what is included and not included in the tour to avoid surprises.

A visit to the blue grotto is a Capri must do however, it is worth knowing that this is one of the busiest attractions in Capri so it may not be as romantic as you are expecting!

On a busy day, you have boats lined up outside of the grotto waiting for their turn to get it and yes, the visit is worth it because the grotto is stunning but if you are looking for a remote grotto experience with only you and nature, this is not it!

Catch the views from Monte Solaro

One of the most beautiful things to do in Capri is to catch views from the high viewpoints in the island and the highest of all is the top of Monte Solaro, which you can reach by chairlift from Anacapri.

trip to capri from india

The chairlift goes slowly and offers breathtaking views over the island, the famous faraglioni and the sea and the view from the very top is even better.

Capri has lovely nature and from here you see at best the green of the island’s beautiful trees, the grey of the rocks, the blue of the seat and the white dots of the boats below, tiny from this height!

This is the best place to take panoramic photos of Capri and, if you have good walking shoes, also a good place to experience Capri’s nature.

On the way down, you have the option of walking down a trail rather than catching the chairlift again, which is a fin way to experience a more remote and wild side of Capri (I don’t recommend to climb up, but rather to do this downhill. Good walking shoes are a must due to the uneven, rocky terrain).

Rest and enjoy the views from Giardini di Augusto

If views are what you are after but a chairlift is not for you, then I recommend you go to the east to reach Giardini di Augusto (Gardens of Augustus).

Located right at the back of Capri town center, the Giardini are a wonderful viewpoint from where to catch view over the Marina Piccola Bay.

The gardens have several terraces, all overlooking the sea, and they are home to several peculiar plant species that make it a lovely place to rest too.

Access to the garden is free at the time of writing and the views are among the best views in Capri.

Marvel at Via Krupp

Via Krupp is another famous attractions in Capri precisely and incredible winding road climbing all the way down the rocky Capri coastline like a snake meandering down into the sea!

The street is rightly famous and over our many times in Capri we have been able to walk it and enjoy its incredible landscapes however, it has been closed for safety reasons so please do check current conditions to avoid disappointment.

Sip aperitivo in glamorous Piazzetta (Piazza Umberto I)

The heart of glamorous Capri is Piazzetta, the small square at the center of Capri town (its real name is Piazza Umbero I, piazzetta means ‘small piazza’ and it is how it is most commonly referred to).

Piazzetta is just what you expect a place for glamorous aperitivo in Italy is like.

Outdoor tables, impeccably groomed people, bags of from designer stores beside designer clothes cladded patrons, inviting cocktails and a distinct upscale atmosphere in a pretty island setting.

For better or for worse, a Capri must see!

Catch even more views from Via Tragara and Belvedere

At the back of Capri town center you find stunning Via Tragara, one of the prettiest in Capri.

Via Tragara is flanked by wonderful, elegant villas and open up onto a stunning belvedere with some of the best views over faraglioni.

A Capri highlight!

Walk the Pizzolungo path to the Natural arch

If you feel like stretching your legs and catch more breathtaking views of the faraglioni and Capri, then you want to check out the path of Pizzolungo and the walk to Capri’s natural arch.

The path is wonderful (take it from Via Matermania not from Tragara, for easier walking) and leads you close to the natural arch, a natural rock formation in form of an arch that frames some of the best views of Capri you can ask for!

Visit Emperor Tiberius’ Villa Jovis

Villa Jovis is the archaeological site with the remains of the Villa of Emperor Tiberius in Capri and truly is a place worth of an emperor.

The villa is perched on high grounds in Capri and has incredibly beautiful views over the island.

You reach following a quiet, well kept path along nice houses and villas and once you are at the site you find a mix of archaeological areas and beautiful nature.

Here, you have what Capri does best: an intoxicating mix of history, green vegetation and blue sea views!

trip to capri from india

See the sunset at Punta Carena lighthouse

Punta Carena is the south west extremity of Capri island and it is the place where you find Capri’s lighthouse ( il faro ), known for being one of the most powerful in the country after the one in Genoa .

The place is much beloved by locals and it is worth coming here at sunset to have aperitivo in front of stunning views.

See Capri’s Faraglioni

I faraglioni are the three tall rocks that define the coastal skyline of Capri, maybe the most distinctive and recognizable landmark in the island.

The faraglioni are in the middle of the sea and the best way to see them is wither from the one of the viewpoints on Capri island or by catching a boat

The best views of faraglioni are from:

  • Giardini di Augusto
  • Belvedere di Tragara
  • Monte solaro

Visit Capri’s Certosa

Close to piazzetta , right in the center of Capri, your eye will be caught by the beautiful Certosa di San Giacomo a monastery dating back to the XIV century.

The old monastery is stunning and one of the most important ancient sites in Capri: like other places in the island what is special here is the mix between human presence and nature.

Inside the monastery, you find lovely cloisters and quiet places that near witness to the religious origins of the building but you also catch wonderful views of the sea.

You can find tickets for the certosa here

Tackle the Phenician steps

The Phoenician steps are a staircase connecting Capri to Anacapri.

The climb is rather steep and you need to be steady on your feet however, the views from here are beautiful and well worth the effort!

The views from here are, one again, wonderful and expansive.

trip to capri from india

Check out Capri beaches

Capri has some wonderful beaches and clean waters and no trip to Capri would be complete without a visit to at least some of them.

Beaches in Capri are not sandy but pebbly and depending on which one you choose, you have easy and gently degrading access to the water or rocky seashore suitable for experience swimmers and divers.

The best beaches in Capri are:

Bagni di Tiberio – my personal favorite, this is a small beach with restaurant and clean waters that you can access by boat only (regular shuttle boats available, the crossing only takes a few minutes).

Marina Piccola , very popular thanks to a pebbly beach gently sloping into the water, one of the most family friendly beaches on the island. If heading to Capri with kids, have a look at our family guide to Capri here.

Marina Grande – the closest beach to the port, this is a nice but very busy beach, suitable especially if you are short on time and need to have easy access to the port and the ferry.

Thanks to the shallow waters, this is a favorite among families so makes up with convenience what lacks in charm.

Faro di Punta Carena – not a beach, you enter the water from the rocky shore with the aid of small steps. One of the best sunset spots in Capri!

Shop for designer clothes in Via Camarelle

At the back of Piazzetta you find Via Vittorio Emanuele, the famous hotels Quisisana and then Via Camarelle, the center of Capri when it comes to designer shopping.

Elegant and clean, this is a place many day trippers to Capri come to so expect great upscale shopping but also a touristy atmosphere.

Take a boat tour around the island

After having seen the sea from Capri, I recommend you see Capri form the sea, taking a boat tour around the island!

Tours are available from many different providers and come in all shapes and sizes: some offer prosecco, some limoncello, some are family friendly, some allow you to stop and swim etc.

You can book a tour in here or you can pick one one the day: the place is full of boat companies offering them so you will find one!

Tours you can book in advance (with free cancellation) are:

  • Capri boat tour with stop at the Blue Grotto
  • Capri 2hour boat tour with happy hour
  • Capri island tour with lunch (from Naples)
  • Capri day and night boat tour (afternoon and evening cruise from Sorrento)

Eat traditional Capri food

Capri has wonderful food and some is typical of the island.

Among the specialties not to miss are:

  • Torta caprese (almond flour and chocolate),
  • Limoncello (this is a specialty for the whole Amalfi coast area),
  • Caprese salad (fresh tomatoes and mozzarella),
  • Ravioli capresi (filled pasta with marjoram and cheese),
  • Pesce all’acqua pazza (fish cooked with fresh diced tomatoes, water and white wine)

What to buy in Capri

Capri is a lovely place for shopping. Here you are going to find:

Capri sandals – one of the most typical artisan creations from the island, they are flat, have minimal designs and can be embellished with jewels and straps.

Perfumes and fragrances – as you walk around Capri, the beautiful perfumes of Capri nature mix with those recreated by the island fragrance makers.

Perfume shops here make wonderful concoction with local ingredients that allow you to bottle a piece of Capri and bring it home with you!

Capri’s campanella – as you walk around Capri you will see a small bell or campanella pretty much anywhere.

This is a special Capri souvenir that it is said should be given to someone special as every time the bell rings, wishes of its owner come true!

Designer clothes – not from the island as such however, the amount of designer shops is a big attractions and makes Capri a sought after destination for bags and clothing by internationally known fashion houses.

Food souvenirs – some of the most delicious food souvenirs form Italy can be found in Capri, especially limoncello , made with the wonderful lemons from the area.

Where to stay in Capri

In Capri there is no shortage of accommodations. Capri hotels and Anacapri hotels and B&Bs you may like are:

Hotel Mamela Capri , beautiful 4 star hotel in Capri with a stunning panoramic pool and terrace. Close to Capri shops and town center, the hotel has beautiful rooms some suitable for families with kids.

Hotel Tragara , elegant 5 star hotel in one of the most scenic locations in Capri with large windows and terraces making the most of the views. Restaurant, pools and spa onsite make this a wonderful hotel for a special stay.

Capri Wine Hotel , lovely 3 star hotel close to Capri town city center with a pretty pergola with vines and lemons opening onto stunning island views.

Il Giardino dell’Arte , pretty Anacapri hotel with a Mediterranean feel and wonderful terraces with views over Capri and the Bay of Naples. Quiet and tranquil setting, nice rooms perfect for couples and families alike.

Hotel La Reginella , Capri, 10 minutes walk from la Piazzetta, affordable, nice hotel with family rooms for up to 5 people and baby sitting service available at an extra charge.

For the discerning family traveler, how to plan a day trip to capri from amalfi coast.

  • by Shweta Singhal
  • Posted on March 16, 2024 April 27, 2024

Capri island is a favourite of the jet-setting crowds. Capri is a popular island getaway for those looking to pamper themselves with an incredible backdrop. And you can reason why when you take a Capri day trip. The island looks magical when the sun is shining bright. A day trip to Capri can be easily planned as part of your Amalfi itinerary.

Capri is located in the blue waters of Italy’s Tyrrhenian Sea just off the Sorrentine Peninsula. It is divine to see this lush island bathed in the warm Mediterranean sun. A day trip to Capri is just about enough to savour some of the highlights of this lovely island. For a deeper connect to the island and to visit all attractions, you need to plan a trip for 2/3 days.

How to reach Capri Island

Capri can be reached via a ferry or catamaran. And in summer months, there are lots of ferry routes that open up from Amalfi town, Positano, Sorrento, and Naples. You can easily check ferry routes to plan Capri day trip on Omio platform to give you all ferry options.

trip to capri from india

Amalfi to Capri : For our 4 days to explore Amalfi coast , we had made Amalfi town as our base. The ferry ride from Amalfi to Capri is about 50 min to 1 hr.

Positano to Capri : The Positano – Capri ferry crossing can take between 30 min to 1 hr, depending on the vessel type you’re traveling with.

Sorrento to Capri : The ferry ride from the port of Sorrento to Capri normally takes about 15-25 min. High speed ferries and ferries depart from the Marina Piccola port in Sorrento.

Naples to Capri : The Naples to Capri ferry time ranges from 50 min to 1 hr 20 min, depending on the vessel type. Many travellers choose to base themselves here and take day trips from Naples to explore both Amalfi coast and capri island.

It is easy to take a ferry from one of these towns and explore Capri in a day. The alternative is to take a day tour to Capri, several options given at the end of the post.

Do note that ferries to CAPRI don’t run all year round except from Naples port. Most ferry services get limited after October and resume again in April.

Best time to go to Capri

The best times to visit Capri island is during spring or fall to beat the summer crowds and experience sunny days. So plan to travel to Capri from the beginning of April to mid-June, and from the beginning of September to mid-October.

Summer months are great weather-wise but do note that it gets crowded on the island and cost of everything goes up. We had visited Italy in June , and the crowd was not bad.

Capri one day itinerary

One day in Capri gives you enough time to enjoy this island and visit some of the main attractions on this charming island.

Boat tour around Capri

Once we reached the harbour area of Capri via a catamaran from Amalfi, we saw large crowds everywhere. You will not be able to avoid crowds in Capri town, harbour area at all, especially in the summer months.

You can book a tour to take your around the island that includes the famous Blue Grotto. The Blue Grotto is famous for its ethereal illumination. As sunlight seeps in through the sea caves’ entrances and bathes the caves in a bluish hue. But being the most famous sight on Capri island brings in large crowds. I would not recommend this attraction if you only have 1 day in Capri.

trip to capri from india

We did not want to spend a long time trying to get inside the cave so we chucked the idea of visiting Blue Grotto completely. Capri tourism has made catching a private tour in the marina easy. We negotiated with a guy at the harbour front to take us on a boat tour around the island. this was easily the best part of our Capri day trip.

A day out on the sea with sunshine upon us, we admired iconic landmarks like the Faraglioni and grottoes by sea. The dramatic Faraglioni are 3 towering rock formations which jut out from the Mediterranean sea just off the Capri island’s coast.

When it comes to boat tours, you have several options to choose from: private charters, a small-group tour like this one , or a large tour that offers a more budget option .

Monte Solaro summit soaring 589 meters above sea level is the highest point on Capri island. You get panoramic views of the island, the surrounding Bay of Naples, and Amalfi coastline.

The easiest way to reach Monte Solaro is by chairlift. You take this 12-minute chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri. When you start your Capri day trip by reaching Marina Grande, you first need to take a bus to Anacapri, the quieter part of the island. The bus ride itself gives you stunning views of the sea and the island.

trip to capri from india

The chairs are made for a single person and kids younger than 7 year go on parent lap. But it is not recommended to take this open chairlift with very young kids. We decided not to do this activity with our (then) 4-year old daughter. Instead we enjoyed Anacapri town itself.

You can buy chairlift tickets at the Anacapri piazza. You also have the option of booking a tour for online tickets and enjoying local dishes and a drink at Monte Solaro.

Enjoy Anacapri town

Anacapri is a much quieter destination with fewer crowds. We enjoyed strolling around the piazza and having a leisurely lunch. I also found some boutique stores and bought a linen dress. One of the best souvenirs from Italy that I wear each summer!

Apart from Monte Solaro, there are 2 other key attractions in Anacapri. Villa San Michele can be visited along with its impressive gardens. This villa, once the residence of Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe, is a beautiful museum that is open to visitors. Chiesa San Michele is a 17th century Church with its notable San Michele statue and an antique ceramic floor.

trip to capri from india

We took the bus to head back to Capri, and enjoyed scenic views on the ride.

Enjoy Capri town

Many folks who come for a day trip to Capri enjoy having lunch at one of the many restaurants or cafes in Capri town. We already had our lunch in Anacapri so we sat down to enjoy a cocktail in Piazza Umberto . This is the most famous and fashionable square in Capri. Pricey and crowded, for sure, but the summer vibe in this area is like none other. If you are spending one day in Capri, you can chill here and watch the world go by!

trip to capri from india

For sightseeing in Capri, my suggestion would be a visit to the Gardens of Augustus over the scenic Via Krupp. It is close to the town center. These gardens comprise of a series of panoramic terraces overlooking the Faraglioni on the one side and the Bay of Marina Piccola and Via Krupp on the other. The Via Krupp, a marvellous feat of engineering, are closed due to safety reasons. But you can see the hairpin bends in the rocks from the top.

Travel Tips for visiting Capri island

What to pack for a day trip to Capri : Be sure to wear comfortable shoes on Capri, because you will be doing quite a bit of walking. Comfortable cotton or linen clothes would work best for summer months. But do note that washed-off denim shorts and some t-shirt doesn’t really cut in at Capri. Do put on something chic to blend in with the hip crowd. Do carry a swimsuit and a cover-up to get on the boat and inn the sea. Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.

Can Capri be done in one day? Yes, but only the highlights and then also, you may have to let go waiting for access to the Blue Grotto. For seeing some of the hidden gems on this island and do some hiking, you should plan to stay for a night or 2.

Boat tour : The island’s coastline is dotted with hidden coves, grottoes and caves that can only be accessed by boat. So make sure you don’t miss out on a boat tour on one day Capri itinerary.

trip to capri from india

How to get around Capri : Buses are a practical way to explore Capri. Taxis are a convenient but pricey way to get around the island. You can rent a scooter to have some fun on the island lanes. Going on foot is an excellent way to get up close and personal with the island.

Capri is expensive : Everything from food to drinks to ferry on Capri island is expensive. So you will find that day tours work out convenient and value-for-money if you are planning one day in Capri.

How to get to Capri

Find all the information you need to reach Capri from Rome, Naples, or the Amalfi Coast here!

How to get to Capri

The only way to reach Capri is by sea . Ferries depart from Naples and Sorrento ; in the summer, there are also routes from Positano , Amalfi , Salerno, and Ischia , not from Procida .

For most of the year, motor vehicles are forbidden on Capri and non-resident vehicles can only be embarked for the island between November and Easter. Regardless, there isn't much use for vehicles on Capri! There is only one road on the island and the town center is pedestrian zone.

How to get to Capri from Naples

In Naples, there are two piers from which ferries to Capri depart: Molo Beverello and Calata di Massa . The Molo Beverello pier is located in front of Maschio Angioino in the Piazza Municipio , the Calata di Massa pier is located further east (to the left, facing the sea). High speed ferries depart from Molo Beverello, and ferries and slow ferries from Calata di Massa. Ferries and slow ferries are more affordable and slower than high speed ferries, and are the only vessels which can embark motor vehicles. Schedules and prices change often: check again the day before you are scheduled to travel or contact the ferry companies directly, especially in case of rough seas! (When seas are very rough, high speed ferries are often suspended and only ferries and slow ferries continue to run). How to reach Capri from Naples

trip to capri from india

Ferry schedules

How long does the ferry take from Naples to Capri? Slow Ferry : 80 minutes Ferry : 50 minutes High speed ferry : 40 minutes
Help! I get seasick! If you are travelling during the summer months, you should have no problems as the sea is generally quite calm. Regardless, here are some suggestions: Choose a ferry or slow ferry, rather than a high speed ferry. Sit in the back rows. Don't look out the window, and listen to music.

How to get to the Molo Beverello Port from the Naples Airport

The nearest airport to Capri is Napoli Capodichino . Here's how to get to the island after landing:

Bus - As soon as you leave the terminal, look for the Alibus shuttle line that runs from the airport to the center of Naples . The bus makes three stops: the first in Piazza Garibaldi , the second at Calata di Massa (where many ferries depart), land the third at the port, near Molo Beverello . Tickets cost EUR 5 and can be purchased on board or online . Taxi - the taxi stand is located at the exit from the terminal. Request the fixed fare for the port (about €20) and do not accept rides from those who offer them inside the airport, as they are not licensed.

Book online the Alibus Tickets

How to get to the Molo Beverello Port from the Naples Train Station

If you don't have much time and have a number of bags, take a taxi. The set fare for the taxi costs around EUR 16.Otherwise, you can take Linea 1 of the underground subway: the Piazza Municipio stop towards "Piscinola".

How to get to Capri from Rome

Getting to Capri from Rome takes at least three hours from the time your flight arrives , and only if you are lucky enough to make all of your connections...otherwise, the trip can take up to half a day! If you are arriving in late afternoon in Rome, consider staying overnight in either Rome or Naples.

From Rome's Fiumicino Airport , take the Leonardo Express shuttle train to the Roma Termini central train station, and from here transfer to a train for Naples .

Alternatively, there is a direct bus from Rome's Fiumicino airport to the Naples Piazza Garibaldi (Centrale) train station: From the Rome Ciampino Airport: once you arrive at Rome Ciampino, take the bus to the Roma Termini train station and then the train to Naples.

trip to capri from india

Private transfer: the most convenient way to reach your hotel

Trains, taxis, ferries, funicular... by this point, you've figured out that getting to Capri from Rome is not the easiest and most relaxing trip. If you'd like to begin your vacation stress-free, then it's a good idea to book a private transfer service. Transfer services to Capri usually include a private car with driver from the airport to the port, a sea crossing by private speedboat to Capri, and a taxi from the port to the hotel. Or you can opt for a helicopter transfer. If you are travelling in a small group, a private transfer can cost more or less the same amount as taking public transport , between train tickets, taxi, and ferry costs. A much better option is to spend the same for a convenient and relaxing private transfer !

Book a private transfer

Getting to Capri by Helicopter

The most simple and scenic way to reach the island of Capri is by helicopter. Travel from Naples, Rome, Florence, Sicily, and Sardegna by helicopter to Capri with the flights provided by Hoverfly Helicopters . The flight from Naples to Capri lasts about 20 minutes and lands at the heliport in Damecuta outside Anacapri. Most helicopter transfers include a private car directly to your hotel on Capri.

Book a helicopter transfer

How to get to Capri from Sorrento

Ferries for Capri depart from the Marina Piccola port in Sorrento . The crossing lasts a bit less than half an hour and the routes run frequently in the summer. From the center of Sorrento, there are a number of bus routes to the port, or you can arrive by foot taking the stairs down from Piazza Tasso.

Our tips The high speed ferry between Sorrento and Capri skirts a gorgeous stretch of coast, so sit outside on deck or on the left side to really enjoy the view!

How to get to Capri from from the Amalfi Coast

From April through October, there are direct ferry routes between Capri and the Amalfi Coast . Ferries to Capri depart from Positano, Amalfi, and Salerno ; during the months of July and August there are also ferry routes departing from Maiori. Schedules are published at the beginning of the tourist season around the end of March, but generally include two or three morning routes from the Amalfi Coast to Capri and return trips in the late afternoon. In June, July, and August, there are also one or two routes departing from Capri in the morning and from the Amalfi Coast in the afternoon.

How to get to Capri from Ischia

During the tourist season from April to October, there are direct ferry routes between Ischia and Capri, departing from Ischia in the morning and returning from Capri in the afternoon. There are no routes from Capri to Ischia in the morning, except for during the months of July and August. To get to Procida from Capri, you must transfer ferries on Ischia.

Once You've Arrived on Capri

The first thing we suggest you do is drop off your bags with one of the porter services on the pier. If your hotel is in Capri town , we recommend having the luggage porter service transport your bags directly to your room. The service will cost from €10-20 per bag (depending upon where your hotel is located), which can seem expensive until you consider having to drag bags through the narrow and steep lanes on Capri to begin your vacation...

To reach the Piazzetta , you can take the funicular (which departs directly opposite the pier; the ticket office is to the right) or one of Capri's open-top taxis. The fare for a ride between the port and the Piazzetta is about €20.

If your hotel is located in Anacapri , you should take a taxi with your bags. The fare from Marina Grande to Anacapri begins at €30 plus extra luggage fees. Otherwise, above the funicular ticket window you'll find the stop for bus routes to Anacapri , which run often. The alternative is to take the funicular and then the Capri-Anacapri bus . Most of the hotels on Anacapri offer free or economic shuttle services between the port and the hotel: inquire directly with your hotel.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Which is the closest airport to capri.

The closest airport to Capri is the Naples Capodichino Airport. It takes about 15 minutes to get from the airport to the Molo Beverello port to catch a ferry that will get you to Capri in about an hour. There is also a heliport on Capri near Damecuta, so you can reach the island directly from the mainland by helicopter.

Should I book a ferry ticket to Capri in advance?
