1. Lexington, KY

Kentucky, and specifically, Lexington , is known as the Horse Capital of the World, with 400 working horse farms in and around the city. The most famous attraction is the 1,200-acre Kentucky Horse Park, where families can see and interact with more horse breeds than we can count! A working farm, the Kentucky Horse Park features the popular parade of breeds called “Horses of the World,” the Mare and Foal Show, a stunning film presentation of Rein of Nobility , several museums, the Hall of Champions and more.

Some of the best equine care facilities in the world are also located in Lexington, and many of them offer tours; these include Rood & Riddle (tours by appointment), Haygard, Davidson, McGee and the Gluck Equine Research Center. Another great spot to view horses is The Thoroughbred Center, where on any given day, you can view around 1,000 horses in residence training.

2. Louisville, KY

Home to the legendary Kentucky Derby—annually held the first weekend in May at the Churchill Downs race track in Louisville —is the second of Kentucky’s horse meccas. 9. Chincoteague Island and Assateague Island, VA

Chincoteague Island and Assateague Island are a must-visit for any horse-loving kid. There are two different herds of wild horses who reside on the islands near the Virginia/Maryland state border. The sand dune-loving horses munch on marsh grass and drink from the freshwater ponds that surround the area. The herd of horses on Chincoteague Island is actually owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, who purchases a grazing permit each year to maintain a herd of 150 adult ponies on Assateague Island. The volunteer firefighters control numbers of this herd and the last Thursday of each July, the herd is swam from one island to the other by saltwater cowboys for auction, an event that tens of thousands of visitors come to see. There are numerous theories as to how the horses ended up here, though many believe they arrived when a Spanish ship sunk offshore around the 1600’s.

7 destinations you need to visit if you’re horse-obsessed

Grab your hat and boots and get ready to saddle up – these destinations make the ideal trips for horse lovers everywhere. Whether you’re an Olympic show jumper, a working wrangler or a total beginner, there’s a horseback adventure out there that’s made for you. Check out my pick of the best equine-filled adventures… giddy up!

1. Chincoteague Island, Virginia, USA

The small island off the eastern shore of Virginia is home to the infamous Misty of Chincoteague . With a landmass of less than 100 square kilometres, Chincoteague Island and the northern Assateague Island are home to over 150 wild Chincoteague ponies. The ponies live in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which is actually located on Assateague Island.

In order to maintain the herd, every July, a group of ponies are wrangled up and swim to the mainland to be auctioned off to the public. The mares and stallions swim back to the island while the foals remain in corrals to be auctioned off. This world-famous event draws in huge crowds every year with people looking to adopt or just soak up the cuteness.

2. Reykjavik, Iceland

Home of the small-statured and sturdy Icelandic Horse, Iceland is a horse lovers paradise. Wild horses roam the lands among icecaps and fjords, through ancient lava flows and across icy hills. Known as the ‘five-gaited horse,’ the breed has two unique gaits – the ‘tölt’ and the ‘flying pace’. As a beginner, there’s no need to go quicker than a walk to enjoy the experience, but for those of us who grew up in the saddle, there’s no better feeling than going for a quick run across a remote Icelandic volcano basin. Treks are offered in all shapes and sizes, from short three-hour sightseeing trail rides to week-long camping adventures .

3. Palm Beach, Florida, USA

Ocala may be the horse capital of the world, but southern neighbor Palm Beach is an equine force to be reckoned with. Between Ocala’s World Equestrian Center and Palm Beach’s Winter Equestrian Festival, there’s no lack of equines in the Sunshine State.

For non-horsemen (and women), you can watch some of top riding in the world without having to pay Olympic prices, during the 12-week long Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC). 12 weeks of children, junior, adult amateur and professional competitions across all different disciplines start in January and run through the end of March. Each week runs from Wednesday nights through Sunday, with the top Grand Prix’s taking place on the weekends.

On the days there’s no show, take advantage of the Atlantic coast’s crystal blue waters and manatee-filled inlets. PBIEC is also home to the Adequan Global Dressage Festival and International Polo Club .

4. Banff, Alberta, Canada

Best known for its picturesque turquoise waters and towering treelines, Banff in Canada is best explored by horseback. Whether it be from the saddle or a sleigh, the snow-covered fields have been left undisturbed except for hoofprints and offer unique views of the stunning sights.

‘Cowboy up,’ as they say, and start planning your adventure today . Banff is home to a few different tour groups that all offer unique experiences, such as Timberline Tours’ Overnight Rides,   Banff Trail Riders’ Winter Sleigh Rides or check out Contiki’s Grand Canadian trip , which includes the Calgary stampede and rodeo.

5. Cody, Wyoming, USA

Trust me, this  ain’t my first rodeo. Throw on your boots and grab your hat because we’re heading out West, partner. Cody in Wyoming, nestled just East of Yellowstone National Park, is named after Buffalo Bill ( sound familiar? ) who founded the town in the late 1890s. Since then, it has become a cowboy hub and central location for all things ‘western’.

If you’re looking for an authentic dude ranch experience , Cody is calling your name. There are also plenty of opportunities for trail rides , day ranches and rodeos !

6. Ibiza, Spain

Wait…what? Party capital of the world Ibiza has a little-known gem hidden at its northern end – Ibiza Horse Valley . The horse sanctuary is located a short 40-minute drive from San Antonio, making it an easy day experience. Though offered to all riding levels, I’d recommend this one for those with at least a bit of saddle time. Each day trip starts prior to sunset and takes riders on a long ride around the valley. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll finish atop the mountain as the sun is about to set!

For those who are confident in the saddle (which at Ibiza Horse Valley is a bareback pad with stirrups), you can split off with one of the guides to go for some gallop sets up the mountain. If you’re a bit nervous, there are plenty of opportunities to go at your own pace, whether that’s a walk, trot or short canter.

7. South Africa

A dream destination for many, Africa is far too big to narrow down to one specific place to saddle up. Lucky for us, the possibilities in big game land are endless. There’s Wineland tours in Cape Town ,  Polo treks on the Nile and Epic Namibia Desert Rides where you’ll ride alongside wild lions, elephants and zebras.

If you’re looking for a more interactive equine experience, they also offer working holidays in both South Africa and Zimbabwe , where you get the opportunity to volunteer at a reserve and learn the ins and outs of stable management, learn to play polocrosse and ride in competitions.

So, what are you waiting for? Time to saddle up and “ride til you can’t no more.”

US Vacation Destinations for Horse Lovers

I admit, I’m one of those people that considers a horse show a vacation…whether I’m competing or just watching.  I love the excitement and the atmosphere…fancy show clothes and bright colored ribbons…the sweet smell of hay and horse sweat….  But, turns out, some people don’t enjoy watching horses parade around in the arena during their downtime (shocking, I know!).

Lexington, KY

Located in the heart of bluegrass horse country, Lexington offers a wide variety of activities for horse lovers and non-horse lovers alike!  Barn tours, race tracks, the Kentucky Horse Park…equestrians can be entertained for days.  While distillery tours, historical sites, and beautiful countryside provide lots of opportunities for non-horse lovers to explore and enjoy the area as well.

Assateague and Chincoteague Island, VA/MD

If you grew up reading Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry, then you’re familiar with Assateague Island .  This island is home to a band of wild ponies that roam free on the beach.  Once a year the horses are gathered and driven to Chincoteague Island where a portion of them are sold to private owners to help maintain an appropriate herd size.  Not only does Chincoteague/Assateague offer the opportunity to glimpse these wild horses in their natural habitat, there are incredible beaches to explore as well as hiking, fishing, and crabbing/clamming for the less horse inclined of the group.

Mackinac Island, MI

Mackinac Island in Lake Huron is unique in the fact that it doesn’t allow motor vehicles on the island.  Instead, horses, bicycles, and boats provide the main forms of transportation.  It’s like stepping back in time.  Take a leisurely carriage tour around the island…enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing…visit a fudge factory…or check out the local historic sites.

Whether you’re a horse owner with a life-long love affair with horses or an admirer from afar, these five US travel destinations are sure to delight horse lovers of every age and stripe!

Churchill Downs is the Home of the Kentucky Derby.

Louisville, Kentucky

Home of the Kentucky Derby, the most prestigious annual horse race in America, and the first jewel of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.

Why you will love it: If you are interested in thoroughbred horses and racing, this should be at the top of your list. Enjoy the “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” enjoying race day at Churchill Downs, as well as the unique southern flavor or Louisville’s other attractions, like the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the Muhammed Ali Center, zip lining and a number of unique museum experiences.

When to visit: If you’re making this trip only once, be sure to catch the Kentucky Derby! And while the race itself is held the first Saturday in May, be sure to catch the 2-week celebration before the race, the Kentucky Derby Festival.

The Annual Wild Pony Swim

Chincoteague, Virginia

Home of the the Chincoteague Pony, a wild breed of pony that lives on Assateague Island in Virginia, and a relaxing natural beach atmosphere.

Why you will love it:

If you love to see wild horses in their natural habitat this is the place to be. The Chincoteague Pony, also known as the Assateague horse, have inhabited Assateague Island for hundreds of years and trace their origin to descendants of horses from a Spanish galleon that wrecked off the coast.

When to visit:

If you want to catch something truly spectacular then book your visit during the annual Pony Swim, which happens for a week every summer. During the event ‘Saltwater Cowboys” round up the ponies and swim them from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. The events during that week include a pony parade, carnival, pony auction, and more.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

There are several places to see wild Spanish Mustangs along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Viewing these beauties requires patience and the knowledge that it can happen at any time.

These Spanish Mustangs roam free along the Outer Banks and are believed to be descendants of shipwrecked horses from hundreds of years ago that took up residence here. At any given time you could have them cross your path on the beach for a wonderful viewing of these beautiful horses.

You can view the horses any time of the year along the Outer Banks but most would probably prefer doing so during fair weather like spring and summer. There are many ways to see the horses including taking a Wild Horse Tour or just walking along the beach.

Ocala, Florida

This central Florida city is known as the Horse Capital of the World with its huge green pastures filled with beautiful horse farms. Ocala is a city in Marion County that has over 600 Thoroughbred farms and is considered one of just a few Thoroughbred centers in the world.

Not only are there a massive amount of horse farms in Ocala but there are also equestrian events happening just about all year long. There is a 500-acre Florida Horse Park here which is the official training site for the U.S. Equestrian Team as well as host to many nationally recognized three-day events, international and Olympic-level equine sports competitions, and more. The area also let’s the equine lover the ability to learn with Olympic-level trainers and to participate in some of the world’s biggest equine competitions.

The fact that this equestrian city is in Florida tells you that the weather is beautiful year round making pursuing horse activities easy. There are several horse festivals as well as equestrian events here throughout the year to keep every horse lover happy.

Saratoga Racetrack

Saratoga Springs, New York

The town of Saratoga Spring in upstate New York has been a ‘Horse Haven’ for horse-lovers dating back to 1847 when the first meeting for trotters was held on a dirt track and wagered on.

The Saratoga Race Course is the oldest race track in America. It also is host to the best horse racing in America. In addition to its equestrian activities, Saratoga has beautiful landscapes, lakes, and springs as well as theater, ballet, opera, music, shopping, and more to occupy everyone in the family.

The best time to visit this area is in the summertime from mid-July through Labor Day when the town hosts the best racing in America including the Saratoga Stakes Races, the Whitney Stakes, and Saratoga’s biggest race, the $1.25 Million Travers Race.

Family Vacations For Horse Lovers

If you are a horse lover, then you completely understand the need to be around them as much as possible.  A family vacation is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the company of equine friends.

I can't remember my kindergarten teacher's name but I can vividly remember the summer vacation my family took when I was 5.  We took a road trip to Mt. Snow Ski Resort in Vermont. My parents were looking for a long weekend of peace and quiet. As we drove up to our hotel, I immediately spotted a white pony roaming freely around the grounds.  The bellman noticed my fascination and introduced me to "Snowshoes". It was Snowshoe's job to pull the children's sleds in winter but he was given the summers off for good behavior.

That was it, I was in love!

I guess the feeling was mutual because that sweet creature followed me everywhere I went that weekend. Like I said, can't remember the name of the teacher I spent that entire year with at school but I will never forget my weekend with Snowshoes!  To this day, if I visit a new destination and get the opportunity to ride, I immediately turn back into that five year old kid all over again.

So for those of you who are horse lovers or perhaps have someone in your family who is also smitten with equines, I thought I'd share some vacation ideas to help inspire your next family vacation....

Day Trips and Excursions

Family vacations are all about balance.  Perhaps not everyone in the family is a huge horse lover - that's okay.  Strike a balance with a horse back sightseeing tour.  Local riding tours are popular at many resort destinations, parks and are even offered in many cruise ship ports of call.  This may be a great compromise for the horse loving member of your family and it's a fun option that may win over the hearts of other family members.  Just do your homework or ask your travel agent for help checking children's age requirements so that no one is disappointed.  Also you may need to pack boots or closed shoes for the occasion so that you're prepared.

If your family would enjoy some old time western hospitality in the great outdoors, then there's nothing like a dude ranch vacation.  Warning - once you experience this type of a family vacation, you might just find yourselves going back year after year because it's so much fun.

Not all dude ranches are created equal so it's important to choose the one that the best fit for your family, the season and everyone's riding skills:

• WORKING DUDE RANCH Your family will be immersed in working cattle operations. Your horseback riding experiences will be determined by the ranch's livestock and the work necessary.
• DUDE RANCH Horseback riding is central to these ranches. The focus here is on Western riding and a variety of fun outdoor activities.
• RESORT DUDE RANCH Offer an array of diverse activities and onsite facilities with horseback riding as one of these features. Great option for families who again are looking for horse and non horse fun.

PS...most of the resort and dude ranches offer rides based on riding skills and offer lessons for beginners.  In the top picture is from our recent visit to Flathead Lake Lodge. My husband Brian had never been on a horse before.  Amanda told him by the end of the week she would have him galloping - sure enough promise kept! My husband turned into John Wayne galloping into the sunset!

Icelandic Horses

In recent years, Iceland has become a very popular vacation destination for families. Adventure seekers love it's unusual landscapes, waterfalls and black beaches....and one of the best ways to experience Iceland is on horseback.

Icelandic horses are the legendary breed of the Vikings. They are a squat and stout animal that have adapted brilliantly to the rocky landscape.  Most horses have 3 -4 gaits....walk, trot, canter, gallop. Icelandic horses have a "5th gear" called  Tölt, which is their version of power walking and they are the only breed that can do it. Also their gallop is  called skeið, or "flying pace".  Skeið  is fast and smooth, with some horses able to reach up to 50 km/hr.

Pony Trekking in Ireland

When most visitors think of Connemara Ireland they often think of the scenic cliffs of Moher.  Horse lovers think of Conneara Ponies. Ireland is known for it's stories and the legends say  these horses swam to shore in the 16th century after the sinking of the Spanish Armada. Since that time this breed has called this windswept, northern Atlantic Irish coastline home.  English riders will love the opportunity to explore Irish trails, tales, traditions and history.  Actually there are many fun horse adventures to be found all throughout Ireland.

Spanish Riding School Vienna

If you're into dressage, then a visit to the Spanish Riding School of Vienna with it's ballet of white Lipizzaner stallions is a must see.  The Spanish Riding School is oldest riding academy in the world, it is also the only one where the High School of Classical Horsemanship has been cherished and maintained for over 430 years. Guided tours of  of practice facilities and stables are availableThis allows you to get up close and also meet riders. Tickets are also available to view of daily practices and of course, those magnificent performances. Children must be over age 3 to attend. These performance  are the culmination of centuries of careful breeding and training methods and horse lovers will be amazed. (Not to mention the famed Vienna Boys Choir).

Gauchos & Glaciers

Passionate equestrians have no doubt heard tales of the gauchos who ride the lush pampas of Chilean Patagonia.  These vast rugged landscapes are best experienced on horseback.  There are many different types of tours available to suit the needs of every rider and family.  Multi- day treks are available for the adventure lovers. Patagonia ranches are called "estancias" and guests are welcome to stay and immerse themselves in Patagonia culture and traditions.  Similar to U.S. dude ranches, these experiences can range from basic, working ranches to luxury lodges.  Trekking tours can also be arranged between remote, luxury lodges so you can experience all the breath taking beauty on horseback while enjoying all your treasured creature comforts.

Hawaiian Paniolos

A visit to Hawaii usually conjures up thoughts of Waikiki, luaus and hula dancers but horse lovers might think a bit differently. The  paniolo   (Hawaiian cowboy) culture is a big part of the lifestyle and history of the island.   the islands of Hawaii offer many unique ways to "saddle up"....from horse-drawn wagon story telling tours to upcountry pasture rides to waterfalls and rainbows to full on cattle drives.  In addition, many of the Hawaiian ranches make perfect venues for family reunions, celebration vacations and even destination weddings.

Aussie Equine Adventures

Australia is so diverse and it offers so many different kinds of amaze equine adventures.  You can canter the coast and take your horse for a swim.  Take a ride through the outback with an Aboriginal cowboy and learn about the wisdom of the ancients.  Head to the mountains where you can take a ride on a tamed "brumby", on of Australia's wild horses.  Take a family trail ride through southern wine country visiting organic vineyards (kids welcome - not to drink of course). On rides along the sunshine coast you may spot wallabies, koalas, kangaroos and colorful parrots and visit historic gold rush towns and rainforests.

These days, many dude ranches offer a little less cowboy-ing and a little more relaxing. You can book a stay at a working dude ranch that will let you move cattle by horseback and fix fences for a full experience or simply trail ride and enjoy a cowboy cookout at others. Shangrila Guest Ranch

South Boston, Virginia

Shangrila Guest Ranch has a backstory of land preservation. Owners Gary and Julie Holmes have made it there life’s work to purchase and conserve 800 acres in the area for trail riders, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. They started with the property next door, outbidding a developer intent on clear cutting the forest. 

That same piece of property was built into a guest ranch where visitors come to disconnect from the electronic world and get back to a simpler way of life. Of course, there’s horseback riding, but hiking, horseshoes, ping pong, and card games are available. As is simply hammock time with a book and a cool drink. Guests can choose to take a cane and pole to the lake for some fishing or participate in hay rides in the wagon. If you’d like to pitch in and help, eggs need gathering, ducks, and other farm animals need feeding and the over 50 horses on the property need to be greeted in the pasture. Ride their horses or bring your own, this ranch offers something for every skill level. 

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo

River Ranch, Florida

Are you familiar with glamorous camping or ‘glamping’? Many campers love the outdoors, along with comfortable accommodations and some kind of toilet. This ranch in Florida promises to resort level amenities with a camping experience through their glamping tents, teepees, or covered wagons . They come with all kinds of creature comforts, including air conditioning or heat, microwave, mini fridge, and upgraded linens. For those that worry, there’s also a private bathroom and a concierge to troubleshoot any needs. 

There’s a petting zoo to get close to those precious little farm animals, skeet shooting, bungee jumping and archery. The rodeo on Saturday nights offers guests a chance for rides on a mechanical bull . You can also come home with your own Western souvenir courtesy of the store on site. There are special perks all the time. For those that love the nightly campfires, the resort offers a "S’mores and Pours" delivery. All the melty marshmallow and graham cracker supplies are delivered along with a bottle of Buffalo Trace Bourbon to your campsite.

Cataloochee Ranch

Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Cataloochee Ranch is planning an opening in late 2023 in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Operated as a sister property to The Swag , a luxurious outpost on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains, Cataloochee has the advantage of offering the epic chef’s picnic on Gooseberry Knob to their horseback riding guests. Right now the horse rides are Wednesday and Saturday with plans for two events open to the public every month until they open.
