15 Best Things to Do in Pittsfield (MA)
The commercial and cultural nucleus for the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts , Pittsfield is an upland city with vistas framed by the Taconic Range to the west and the Berkshire Hills in the east.
Pittsfield had a booming economy at the turn of the 20th century, driven by a forerunner to General Electric.
Along the stately North Street and South Street, the prosperity of that time is obvious, with tall commercial blocks, churches, palatial civic buildings, opulent theaters and a local museum with rich collections.
Since 2005, Pittsfield has been home to the award-winning Barrington Stage Company, renowned for new work like The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which picked up a number of Tony’s in 2004.
1. Herman Melville’s Arrowhead
Author Herman Melville’s (1819-1891) most productive years were spent at this house in the south of Pittsfield.
During his time at Arrowhead from 1850 to 1863, Melville finished Moby-Dick (1851), and wrote Pierre (1852) and The Confidence-Man (1857), before selling up to his brother and moving with his family to New York City.
The house dates back to the 1780s and got its name from Melville because of the arrowheads he would dig up each year during the planting season.
Members of the Melville family owned the property until 1927, and in 1975 it was purchased by the Berkshire County Historical Society, which returned the interiors to Melville’s time.
You can come to Arrowhead from mid-May to mid-October for tours, and there’s rich programming including live performance, readings, artist talks and guided trail walks.
2. Hancock Shaker Village
On 750 acres in the southwest of Pittsfield is a preserved Shaker commune that was active from the late 18th century to 1960.
Now a living history museum, the village is still part of a working farm, the oldest in the Berkshires, with extensive fruit and vegetable gardens and heritage-breed domestic animals.
There are 20 marvelous historic buildings in situ, such as the rare Round Stone Barn, built in 1826, and designed with an ingenious series of four interior rings.
Throughout the village there are upwards of 20,000 artifacts, including beautifully crafted furniture, while interpreters and skilled artisans give a riveting insight into Shaker life.
Summer brings a wealth of events, from workshops to goat yoga, concerts and the annual Summer Gala in early August.
3. Berkshire Museum
Looking like a Roman villa on South Street, the Berkshire Museum was founded by the newspaperman Zenas Crane, opening in 1903.
In the style of museums from that time, this attraction is a multifaceted cabinet of curiosity, zipping from fine art to engineering, natural history, zoology and ancient civilization.
There are more than 40,000 objects from a multitude of fields in the museum’s collections, and one recent addition is the Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation, a contemporary interactive exhibit exploring the past, present and future of bright ideas.
The permanent exhibition, Objects and Their Stories features rotating selections from the museum’s large reserves, like ancient Egyptian mummies, or plaster casts of iconic works of sculpture such as the Winged Nike of Samothrace.
4. Downtown Pittsfield (Upstreet Cultural District)
Mostly along the broad boulevards, North Street and South Street, Downtown Pittsfield has a real sense of scale for a city of 44,000.
Magnificent turn-of-the-century commercial blocks stand six storys or more, accompanied by civic buildings, courthouses, churches, the Berkshire Museum, a masonic temple and splendid entertainment venues like the Colonial Theatre (1903).
Park Square, the go-to site for protests, is home to the city’s Civil War memorial, erected in 1872. A good first stop is the city’s visitor center at 121 South St, where you can grab an armful of brochures for the area.
One should be the Pittsfield Walking Tour, leading you to 60 plaques for historic sites and buildings along South Street, North Street and Park Place, with a version that can be downloaded online.
5. Barrington Stage Company (BSC)
Since 2005, Pittsfield has been the permanent home for this critically acclaimed regional theatre company. When we wrote this article, the Barrington Stage Company had produced almost 40 pieces of new work.
Many of these had transferred to stages in New York, including the Tony Award-winning musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2004).
The company has several properties around downtown Pittsfield, with a 520-seat Mainstage Theatre (30 Union St) at a venue built for vaudeville in 1912.
There are also shows at the St. Germain Stage, in the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center (36 Linden St).
When we made this list, the season featured two world premieres, as well as productions of Anna in the Tropics, Waiting for Godot and A Little Night Music.
6. Bousquet Mountain
This highly-rated ski area first opened in 1932, and is the oldest still operating in the Berkshires.
You can get to Bousquet Mountain in under ten minutes from downtown Pittsfield, whether you want to ski, snowboard or simply hit the snow tubing hill.
For this family-friendly activity there are eight lanes with 100% snowmaking coverage and a carpet lift to whisk you back to the top in seconds.
Elsewhere the mountain offers 24 runs on 200 skiable acres, with night skiing and the Yokun Terrain Park. In the summer this spot becomes part of a hiking area along the Yokun Ridge, and hosts a series of outdoor concerts.
7. Lake Onota
Set within city limits there’s a 617-acre lake on Pittsfield’s western shoulder, bordered by woods and 19th-century residences.
Lake Onota is one of the best places to take in the majesty of the Taconic Mountains, which look even prettier as the sun goes down.
In the summer you can head to the Onota Boat Livery to rent a lineup of vessels, from motorized fishing boats to canoes, kayaks, pedal boats and rowboats.
Lake Onota is the setting for Pittfield’s Live on the Lake concert series, with performances every Wednesday evening throughout July and August.
8. Colonial Theatre
Among the magnificent landmarks fronting South Street is this Gilded Age theater that opened in 1903.
Some of the many feted performers to appear at the Colonial Theatre in those early days are Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks Sr, George M. Cohan and Eubie Blake.
For the entire second half of the 20th century the building was used as an art supply store, while holding onto its period decor and fittings.
Praised for its acoustics and preserved turn-of-the-century details, the venue was named a National Historic Treasure in 2000, and underwent a $22 million refurbishment that was completed in 2006.
The Colonial Theatre is managed by the Berkshire Theatre Group, staging musicals, drama and concerts for all tastes
9. Pittsfield State Forest
On Pittsfield’s west flank is an immense state forest over some 11,000 acres of upland scenery. There are woods for miles, with streams, waterfalls and scenic bodies of water like Berry Pond.
This is at the top of Berry Mountain, and with an elevation of 2,150 feet it’s the highest natural body of water in Massachusetts.
In the northeast corner of Pittsfield State Forest you’ll happen upon Balance Rock, a limestone boulder, 15 feet by 30 feet, resting on a tiny base.
There are more than 30 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as scores of campsites.
One adventure for more rugged hikers is the Taconic Crest Trail, winding along the NY border atop the ridge of the Taconic Range for 37 miles.
10. Ashuwillticook Rail Trail
When we wrote this article, the 13-mile Ashuwillticook Rail Trail had just been extended into Pittsfield. You can pick up this route at the southern trailhead near the intersection of Crane Ave and Dalton Ave.
Much of the path is on the route of the old Pittsfield and North Adams Railroad, completed in 1846 and eventually abandoned in 1990.
The trail has been opened in several phases since 2001, making its way through Adams, Cheshire, Lanesborough and now a portion of Pittsfield.
Some of the landscapes on the route are exhilarating, especially along the shore of the Cheshire Reservoir, and further north beside the Hoosic River, with the Taconic Mountains on the horizon to the west.
11. Beacon Cinema
An entertainment amenity for a revitalized downtown, the Beacon Cinema is a six-screen multiplex in an historic commercial building.
As you might tell from the facade, the building was a S.S. Kresge 5 & 10 cent store, built in 1918 with intricate terra cotta details on the frieze and upper story.
A downtown movie theater had been a long-term goal for Pittsfield, and the Beacon Cinema opened in 2009.
You can catch first run movies, big-screen classics and even live Met opera presentations, at screens with stadium seating and comfy, heated recliners. This is also one of those rare movie theaters serving alcoholic beverages.
12. Springside Park
Pittsfield’s largest municipal park is on the National Register of Historic Places, and was laid out on a former farm in the early 20th century.
One structure that was already here is the Springside House, a mid-19th century Italianate mansion, with Late Victorian additions.
Found in the southwestern section, this building was previously the parks and rec department’s HQ, and hosts outdoor events on the lawn in summer.
Springside Park is known for its winding wooded trails, which were undergoing a rehabilitation process at the time of writing.
Ongoing work around the park also included the restoration of Springside House, and the restoration of Springside Pond.
13. The Common
On the east side of downtown Pittsfield is a central space for recreation and outdoor events. The Common has a stately feel thanks to the grand Beaux-Arts frontage of the Old Central High School to the east.
There’s a pavilion for summer performances, as well as a large splash pad, a sculpture lawn, picnic area, basketball court and playground.
On Saturday mornings, May through October, the Common is also the location for the Pittsfield Farmers’ Market.
This is officially the first teen-run farmers’ market in the region, for seasonal and local fruit and vegetables, along with fresh roasted coffee, baked goods, honey, meat, eggs, flowers, cheese and more.
Every week you can catch live music, chef demonstrations, workshops and activities for kids.
14. Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary
Less than a mile from downtown Pittsfield there’s 264 acres of woods, meadows and wetlands on the bank of the Housatonic River.
Canoe Meadows is criss-crossed by three miles of easy, flat trails, with two loops to choose from.
Depending on the time of year, you might come across, or spot signs of, wild species like river otters, beavers, wild turkeys and even an occasional black bear, as well as bird species like osprey, bobolink and great blue heron.
15. Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade
The city has long been known for its impressive 4th of July Parade, which has a history that can be traced back to 1801.
One early documented parade in 1824 featured Revolutionary War veterans and political figures in horse-drawn carriages.
Organized by an independent non-profit group, the parade continues to grow by the year, making its way north through downtown along South Street and North Street.
On a typical year there are more than 1,000 marchers from 175 organizations, with special guest stars, several marching bands, drum corps, dance teams, almost two dozen floats and enormous helium balloons overhead.

Are you already planning your trip to the Berkshires? Perhaps you haven’t decided yet on which Berkshires town to stay in.
Here’s an easy choice: opt for a stay in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a central point in the Berkshires region that’ll give you access to all the surrounding towns, great opportunities to see nature, driving distance to theatres and arts events and cool hiking.
On our recent trip to Pittsfield, we were pleasantly surprised with the caliber of the places to stay, restaurants to dine in, proximity to laid-back nature walks and other attractions.
You can use this guide we wrote up based on what we did on our trip, during your travels in the Berkshires of Massachusetts at any time of year!
Where is Pittsfield, MA?
Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is located centrally in the Berkshire Mountains of New England. The city of Pittsfield is located quite centrally between the northernmost towns of Williamstown and North Adams, which sit near the Vermont border, and the famed Berkshire County towns of Lenox , Lee, Great Barrington and Stockbridge.
Pittsfield is located on State Route 7, a road that runs from the top of Massachusetts to the bottom. Pittsfield is less than one hour from Albany, NY, an hour and a half from many points in the Catskills , two and a half hours from Boston and three hours (only!) from New York City.
The story of Pittsfield
Pittsfield had its heyday back as it started to be a growing town in the late 1800s and in the first half of the 20th century. It saw business come in, and the rise of GE as a magnet for workers.
Toward the second half of the 1900s, GE pulled out of the city and with that, much of Pittsfield was left hanging. Things fell into a bit of a post-industrial lull.
By the 2000s, a revitalization or renaissance started, and that is what you’ll see now if you visit Pittsfield, which is a city undergoing change. In fact, you can even be part of the change by supporting the growing businesses, which cater to visitors and travelers.
We really liked some of the restaurants we visited, and would go back in a minute! Additionally, the nature surrounding Pittsfield is relaxing, accessible, and free .
All these things make Pittsfield a cool place to spend a few days without even needing to go far in order to access shopping, farm-to-table cuisine, natural surroundings and arts and culture. You can check out the city’s website at CityOfPittsfield.org .
Our photo gallery of Pittsfield shows what Pittsfield looks like today.
Where to stay at every budget
Pittsfield has several hotels within the city limits, in addition to a small handful of Airbnbs that range from apartment properties to private rooms in hosts’ homes. Here, we’ll share a few top-rated hotel ideas with you.
Splurge: Hotel on North
Hotel on North is not just a hotel, it’s an experience. Located centrally in the town on North Street, Hotel on North gives visitors a stylish travel experience via its unique rooms, vintage touches and modern amenities.
The building itself is a renovated historic set of properties, and inside, you’ll see brick walls, bespoke furniture, clawed-foot bathtubs, common spaces full of books and even a game room. There is an on-site bistro restaurant located right through the lobby, as well as a trendy gift shop downstairs.
We genuinely enjoyed our two-night stay here! You can see all our photos in this review of Hotel on North .
Mid-range: Hilton Garden Inn Lenox Pittsfield
This hotel comes well-rated and is located outside of the center of town, down Route 7. It’s smack between Pittsfield and Lenox , which will give you a chance to visit both towns.
Prices at the Hilton Garden Inn are more moderate, and will vary based on weekday vs. weekend, low season vs. high season, just like at Hotel on North.
Rooms have been renovated and are modern, and the best amenity is probably the indoor pool! You can book the Hilton Garden Inn here.
Budget: Best Western Plus Berkshire Hills Inn & Suites
Staying at a Best Western is never a fancy nor over-the-top experience, but it gets the job done, and that is what is important if you are aiming to save money on a trip .
The Best Western in Pittsfield is located about eight minutes from the center of the city, and is on the way to the Hancock Shaker Village. The hotel is on a nondescript street that leads you out of town and westbound.
Rooms are a little more dated, which is reflected in the price of staying at this hotel. Depending on which night of the week you book and in which season, you can find rates closer to $100 for a standard room, before tax. That’s pretty affordable in the Berkshires.
To see more about the Best Western, check out Booking.com, here .
Where to eat
We were pleasantly surprised with the great cuisines in Pittsfield. Dan and I both have an assortment of dietary restrictions, which has brought us to writing about traveling as a vegetarian and gluten-free travel destinations . Pittsfield checked both boxes!
District Kitchen & Bar
Without further ado, this was the favorite meal we enjoyed together in Pittsfield. We started with a drink for me and a local beer for Dan, and for mains, Dan had an excellent vegetarian burger (those pickles were delicious) and I had an absolutely delightful gluten-free curry with a side of salmon. Truly, we wished this meal would have lasted forever, and the ambiance of District is super cool, with great trendy vibes and a very full bar.
District Kitchen is located here .
Berkshire Palate
Berkshire Palate is more of a bistro-style restaurant with great service and a big menu that’ll suit every traveler.
For mains, Dan had the vegetarian-style ramen, and I had a salad with grilled chicken. We liked the convenient location of Berkshire Palate inside Hotel on North , meaning there was also parking out back (free).
Proprietor’s Lodge
This indoor-outdoor restaurant located on a lake right outside town is a great place to really feel like you’re on vacation! The lodge is an events venue with a restaurant on the ground floor at lake level. The cuisine is American, and we both enjoyed Mediterranean salads with salmon. This was some good food!
Zucco’s Family Restaurant
While located a bit further outside of town, what I appreciated about Zucco’s and what drew me in during a Google search was the restaurant’s gluten-free menu .
Also, I had an order for a gluten-free pizza with a few toppings, and they were so careful with my order that when I picked up my pizza, they were kind enough to tell me that they had foregone the eggplant because it’s breaded and therefore not gluten-free, for my allergy.
Thank you to everyone at Zucco’s for keeping me from harm!
Where to drink (coffeeshops and bars)
Whenever Dan and I travel, we tend to rate cities (in our minds) by the caliber of their cafes and coffeeshops. Pittsfield was no exception! Luckily, we were recommended a few good places to caffeinate.
Dottie’s Coffee Lounge
This is without a doubt the place to have your morning coffee and join other breakfast lovers to enjoy a drink or brunch at Dottie’s . Located on North Street on a corner, there’s lots of seating, both indoor and out.
With a big menu of sandwiches, breakfast goodies, oatmeal bows and more, it was really hard to decide what to get.
Plus, you’ve got to check out Dottie’s “Bear Butter,” which is a fortified super nut butter they can put in your oatmeal. You can also purchase it in the little store.
Lulu’s Tiny Grocery
Lulu’s Tiny Grocery is a little cafe inside a small shopping center and owned by a very friendly guy who will chat with you while you order! We recommend getting a bagel and a latte.
Thistle & Mirth
While we did not have the chance to visit Thistle & Mirth, it looked really cool from the outside, and I put it on my future mental list of bars to visit. Check out the menu at their website .
Where to see some nature
What we liked about staying in Pittsfield was that within a very short driving distance was quite a few places to enjoy nature and feel far from town. From small lakes to tall forest trees and wetlands, there is a natural escape for everyone outside Pittsfield, MA.
Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary
This petite wildlife preserve has a mix of sun and shade, water and land and marine life and birds. We enjoyed going for a nature walk here, as we got to take a lot of photos and move at our own pace. We had the reserve totally to ourselves on a weekday morning! If you have seen our list of places to avoid other tourists , you know that we like being the only people in a place we visit.
With two main trails that take 30-60 minutes depending on which one you choose, none of the walking in Canoe Meadows is difficult, which makes it great for families, or anyone looking for an easy nature walk right outside town.
Animals we enjoyed seeing were “the biggest cricket we’ve ever seen,” turtles, birds, butterflies, bees and chipmunks. You can check out the sanctuary’s website here .
Pittsfield State Forest
Pittsfield State Forest is a much larger natural area located 20 minutes outside Pittsfield’s town center. While we wish we had more time during our trip to get some real hiking in, we came for a picnic and for admiring the tall trees that created a lot of shade on a super sunny day.
At the mass.gov website, you can find this map , which lists both summer and winter usage of trails. It’s really helpful, depending on which time of year you’re visiting the Berkshires. There’s also ample areas for camping, and you can find out more about camping in the forest at this link .
If you’re like us, you might really like using AllTrails for finding your hikes, as this is exactly what we did during our trip to the Adirondacks ! Check out the trails for all levels at this link to the AllTrails routes for Pittsfield State Forest .
Lake Onota was our introduction to Pittsfield on the night we arrived, and luckily, we were able to see a dramatic sunset with the rolling hills and mountains as a silhouette backdrop!
This lake is located right outside town, and could be a five-minute drive, depending on where you’re staying. Be sure to watch the sunset along the western shore, which has fewer private homes and has some public areas for walking, along with a tiny sandy area.
Where to experience arts and culture
Pittsfield, like the rest of the Berkshires region, is home to fun arts and culture that you can find at many times of year. The Berkshires area is well-known for theater, music and art, so whichever is your passion is something you can arrange to enjoy in Pittsfield or nearby!
Plus, with Pittsfield’s central location, you can head up to Mass Moca in North Adams, MA, or down to Tanglewood , a famous live music venue in Lenox, MA.
Colonial Theater
We visited the Colonial Theater and were lucky enough to have a private tour due to coming in between the summer and fall seasons. (A good tip is that if you wish to see a show, come during the summer season before it ends, or at the start of the fall season, which is mid-September).
The theater has its roots dating back to 1903, and through the years, it was a garage, and a paper goods store, and then fell into disuse.
It was revived and reopened in the 1990s, and has had great success in bringing amazing talent and theatrical events to its stage. Famous visitors have included Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton! The theater saw millions of dollars in investment to restore it to its original grandeur, which is what you see when you come for a show these days. It’s like a Broadway theater.
Check out the schedule of shows, here .
Hancock Shaker Village
For a very different type of cultural experience, head outside of town to the living history museum of Hancock Shaker Village . I tend to really like living history museums, with Colonial Williamsburg being one of my favorites!
At the Shaker Village, you’ll get to see Shaker-style buildings that have been both preserved and restored, and you can see how the community had an early version of a freezer, a laundry center and more.
Head to the round barn to see gaggles of goats, sheep and other farm animals, who are not shy at all with their vocals! Outside, we saw chickens, donkeys and a colorful rooster.
If you’ll be in Pittsfield for a few days, check out the events calendar , which includes fun things to do like Goat Yoga, or a ghost tour of the village around autumn time!
Berkshire Museum
If you come across a rainy day during your trip, visit the Berkshire Museum , located at 39 South Street, Pittsfield, MA. The museum contains exhibits on everything from rocks and minerals to the “backyard of the Berkshires” and its nature. The museum is great for everyone, whether children or adults. See more at the visit page .
Where to go shopping in Pittsfield
Pittsfield’s downtown surely has a mix of stores, and it’s very clear which ones are new and cater to new waves of visitors. Among vintage stores, toy shops and others, the two below stick out for places you’ll want to visit if you’d like to bring something memorable home from your Berkshires trip.

How to get to Pittsfield in the Berkshires (and how to get home)
We found Pittsfield quite easy to get to from within New England, and we came from Vermont, where we had spent the preceding few days seeing family.
Although we drove, because of being on a larger roadtrip with Pittsfield and the Berkshires as our final stop, we could’ve taken an Amtrak from NYC ! Check out the ways to get to Pittsfield below.
How to get to Pittsfield & the Berkshires from NYC
If you’re coming from NYC, there are a few options for you in getting to Pittsfield and the Berkshires region of Massachusetts.
Rent a car (or drive your own car). A drive from Manhattan will take about three hours only (with no traffic). It’s about 150 miles and the best route is to head directly north through upstate NY, taking a turn off before Albany to head into Massachusetts and across the Hudson River.
Take the Amtrak train from NYC to Pittsfield! As Thrillist reported in spring 2022, this new route just made a Berkshires getaway from NYC a reality! The Berkshire Flyer route can get you from NYC to Pittsfield in a dab less than four hours, which means it’s bound to take just as long as driving, but you get to sit back and relax.
You can check timetables and fares at the Amtrak website .
Take a bus! From Port Authority in Midtown Manhattan to Pittsfield’s downtown transit hub, you could be spending only $39 to get from NYC to Pittsfield, one way. The journey will likely take almost nine hours, as there is a transfer and a one-hour stop in Boston. Check out the bus fares at greyhound.com .
How to get to Pittsfield & the Berkshires from Boston
From Boston, you’re looking at an easy 2.5-hour drive across the state from east to west. To avoid driving, take an Amtrak train across the state and reference the route in this helpful map . Lastly, you could opt for an easy Greyhound bus from Boston.
How to get to Pittsfield from Upstate NY & the Catskills
From points in upstate NY, Pittsfield is a surprisingly short drive (depending on where you already are). From the Albany capital region, Pittsfield is a stone’s throw over the Massachusetts border after you cross the Hudson River by bridge in your car.
Great news for train fanatics: from Upstate train stations like Poughkeepsie, Hudson and Albany, Pittsfield is reachable by Amtrak.
More fun news is that a bus from Albany to Greyhound could run you as little as $13! Find your options here at the Greyhound website .

Pittsfield, Massachusetts: A Guide to Your Weekend Getaway
July 16, 2022.
Please note that this post may contain affiliate links and any sales made through such links will reward me a small commission – at no extra cost for you.
If you live in the Northeast, you’ve likely heard of the Berkshires before. But have you heard of the charming, and culture-packed city of Pittsfield, Massachusetts? Nestled smack in the middle of Berkshire County, the city of Pittsfield offers everything you need for a weekend escape from New York City. Whether you’re looking for gourmet farm-to-table dining, boutique hotels, endless hiking trails, or world-class theater, Pittsfield offers it all just a short train right away from NYC.
Not only is Pittsfield a great destination for a weekend getaway, but it is also the perfect base for exploring the broader Berkshire area, as it sits just between “North County” and “South County”. A stay in Pittsfield allows you to quickly access both the northern cities of Williamstown and North Adams, as well as the popular southern cities of Great Barrington and West Stockbridge.
I was invited by the town of Pittsfield to come experience everything the city has to offer, and experience the inaugural train journey from NYC to Berkshire County.
Getting to Pittsfield via The Berkshire Flyer
After 51 years, train service has resumed, this time powered by Amtrak, to offer direct access from New York City to the Berkshires by train. The Berkshire Flyer, which launched on July 8th, is a pilot program for the summer to test the demand for this route. The current schedule offers 1 round trip service per week, departing from the new Mohyian Penn Station in NYC at 3:15 on Fridays, and returning from Pittsfield, MA on Sundays departing at 3pm.
The train, which makes a number of stops including Yonkers, Poughkeepsie, Hudson, and Albany, takes 4 hours. Previous to the launch of the new route, the easiest way to get to the Berkshires from NYC by public transportation was to take the Metro North to Wassaic, followed by a bus. Having direct train access from NYC encourages a new wave of tourism to Pittsfield and the broader Berkshire county. During my trip, I had the opportunity to sit down with Berkshire County Senator Adam Hinds who shared that the city is taking a number of actions to making visit Pittsfield even more accessible to New York tourists, including new shuttles services and an Enterprise car rental outpost directly next to the main train station.
Best Time of Year to Visit Pittsfield, Massachusetts
Pittsfield offers round-year activities for its guests, where you’re looking to explore the hiking trails or the ski trails. Visiting in July, we were welcomed with perfect summer weather. However, there is plenty to see and do in the winter months as well!

The city of Pittsfield has something to offer for any type of traveler. Whether you’re looking for gourmet farm-to-table dining, boutique hotels, endless hiking trails, or world-class theater, Pittsfield offers it all just a short train right away from NYC.
Attend a show at the theater – either at Barrington Stage Company or the Colonial Theater
Pittsfield is a city full of artists, and that talent shines through at the performances put on at both the Barrington Stage Company and Colonial Theater . With tickets as low as $59, a night at the theater should absolutely be added to your Pittsfield travel itinerary.
I had the opportunity to see Ain’t Misbehaving during my recent visit to Pittsfield and it was fantastic!
Visit the historic home of Herman Melville
I’m sure you’ve heard of the classic American novel Moby Dick. But did you know that Melville wrote this classic novel while living in the Berkshires? While in Pittsfield, stop by the historic home of Herman Melville for a flash back in time.
Enjoy a luxury stay at boutique hotel, Hotel on North
My stay at the boutique hotel of Hotel on North was easily a highlight of my trip to Pittsfield. From the unbelievably attentive staff to the attention to detail in all of the decor and design, the team at Hotel on North will make sure that your stay is perfect. Not to mention, it is conveniently located just a 2 minute walk from the train station.
What was once an old department store, Hotel on North now offers 45 charming and unique rooms for its guests, since it opened as a hotel 7 years ago.
With rooms starting around $160 in the winter months and $200 in the summer months, Hotel on North is an affordable slice of paradise for New York City tourists. Looking to splurge? Book yourself a stay in the Library Suite. The suite, which is appropriately named, is filled with hundreds of books, perfect for a real-life Belle moment.
Go for a hike in Pittsfield State Forest (or the Boulders)
One of the best things to do in Pittsfield is enjoy the many hiking trails that fill the city, including Pittsfield State Forest . With over 30 miles of trails, you could spend your entire vacation here! But if you’re looking for a quick afternoon experience, I recommend checking out Berry Pond, the highest body of water in Massachusetts. The pond can be reached by car or foot. If you’re looking to camp, make sure to reserve a campsite ahead of time. Rates start at $17.00/night for a tent-only site.
The BNRC Berkshire Trails app is a comprehensive guide to hiking trails in state forests, parks & nonprofit land preserves.
Unfamiliar with the trails and looking for some additional guidance? Mindy from Berkshire Camino offers guided walks and hiking tours throughout Pittsfield and the greater Berkshire county. Mindy’s hiking tours are inspired by her experience hiking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Her tours are so much more than just a walk through the woods, as she brings in beautiful elements of mindfulness and meditation into all of her guided tours.
Tours start at $50 and are suitable for all fitness levels.
Head to the slopes at nearby Bousquet Mountain or Jiminy Peak
Pittsfield and the Berkshires are not just a summer destination. Come in the winter to enjoy great skiing at nearby mountains of Bousquet Mountain and Jiminy Peak . Bousquet Mountain is less than 10 minutes away by car from the heart of Pittsfield, while Jiminy Peak, which is located in Hancock, can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
Visit Hancock Shaker Village
Hancock Shaker Village is a landmark destination of 750 acres, 20 historic Shaker buildings and over 22,000 Shaker artifacts. On the National Historic Register, it is the most comprehensively interpreted Shaker site in the world and the oldest working farm in the nation.
Pictured below is one of the rotating art exhibits.
Take a stroll down North St
North St is Pittsfield’s charming main road. You’ll find restaurants, shops. and hotels dotting the picturesque city street. Make sure to stop in Dory & Ginger (pictured below) for the cutest gifts and home goods.
Visit the Pittsfield Farmers Market
The Pittsfield Farmers Market runs weekly on Saturdays, from May to October. Local fruits and veggies are provided by Roots Rising, whose mission is to empower youth and build community through food and farming. On select weekends you’ll also find tons of local vendors, from clothing to aromatherapy essentials like Kenzie’s Essentials.
Where to eat in Pittsfield, Massachusetts
There is no shortage of great dining options in Pittsfield. Below are just a few of my favorites that I tried!
District Kitchen & Bar
Our meal at District Kitchen & Bar was hands down the best meal that we ate while in Pittsfield. Serving contemporary American cuisine, it is one of the best dining options in town. The restaurant was established just a few years after its sister restaurant in North Adams, Public. You’ll find a few of the same classic menu items, including the Mac & Cheese, PEI Mussels, and appropriately named Public Salad.
While the restaurant doesn’t take any reservations, you can add yourself to the waitlist on their website, where you’ll also be given estimated wait time.
The Marketplace
A more casual farm-to-table eatery, The Marketplace is a great option for picnic lunches while in Pittsfield. Planning a hike? Swing by The Marketplace ahead of time to grab one of their delicious sandwiches or salads. I got the Stockbridge Bowl with grilled chicken and it was delicious and super filling.
Do yourself a favor and order the lemon bar for a real treat. They are big enough to share, but delicious enough to enjoy all on your own.
Berkshire Palate
The Berkshire Palate is attached to the Hotel on Room, making it a great stop for any guests of the hotel. The food is delicious, and the beer selection is great! The kitchen is typically open until around 9pm, with the bar serving drinks until 10pm.
Dottie’s Coffee Lounge
Dottie’s is a Pittsfield breakfast classic. A local favorite, Dottie’s provides food and drinks locally sourced for a sustainable community. Dottie’s runs a program called Berkshire Oats, where each oatmeal purchased provides one for someone in need in the community. Locals rave about their famous Bear Butter.
Methuselah Bar & Lounge
Methuselah Bar & Lounge is a great option if you’re looking for a drink in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This charming locale serves organic wines & craft beer paired with local New American fare. While I wasn’t super impressed by the food, the cocktails were incredible. I particularly enjoyed the Paper Plane.
Mission
A tapas-style restaurant in the heart of Downtown Pittsfield, Mission is a great option for pre-theater food if you are attending a show at the Barrington Stage Company.
Thistle & Mirth
Although I didn’t have a chance to stop at Thistle & Mirth myself, it is affectionately claimed as the local bar for a weekend night out in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Stop by and let me know what you think!

Another from our group already wrote a review but we had such a great experience here, Hailey & Tavern at the A deserve so much praise. We called with 10-15 minutes notice to see if they could accommodate our bachelorette group of 16 understanding it was a big ask and Hailey was unbelievably accommodating. She was helpful, friendly, fun, and got us everything we needed and more. Everyone really enjoyed our food and our drinks alongside the top notch customer service. Our experience with Hailey and Tavern at the A ended up being one of the highlights of our entire weekend. Will definitely be coming back if/when any of us are back in the area!
After a fun experience at Ramblewild, our group of 16 needed to find a late lunch spot. Tavern at the A was open and able to accommodate our party. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather, and then we met the owner, Hailey. What a delight! She took the best care of us, recommended all her favorite food and drinks on the menu and even gave us a speaker to play some music. Her personality and great business sense shined. We ended up staying for 3 hours!!! Chatting with Hailey as she made sure that the bride and our group had the best time ever. We were extremely well taken care of! Would 10/10 recommend and if we're ever back in the area, we will absolutely stop in for some delicious food and Hailey Dailies. Love you Hailey!! See you at the wedding!
Food in the Shire is usually sub-par, I was completely blown away by the food quality and price... Best wings in the Berkshires. The entire menu looks good, I have three 4 different meals. All totally on point. Wedge Salad = Nailed it (6 stars) bacon could be more crispy. Hamburg = Nailed it (7 stars) great quality, Best price in the Berkshires. Wings = (10 Stars) Best in the Berkshires Meatballs = (6 Stars) Fries = (6 Stars) * They come out in little baskets Service is also above average for the Berkshires. I am going back to try the Quesadilia next time :)
The food was amazing. I strongly recommend the chicken panini. It was a lunch special though.
Fantastic hidden gem only 18 minutes from Jiminy Peak. We stopped in with our 4 kids, one of which is anaphylactic to peanuts, simply because they are a nut free kitchen..... but what a meal and there was talented local live music playing too. We had potato skins (bacon was crispy perfection), tomato soup, grilled cheese, turkey club with cheese, chicken fingers, and an iceberg wedge with creamy blue cheese dressing. We will be back, not only because they were so kind in giving us a safe dining experience, but because sure the food quality and pricing was outstanding.
The Roast Beef Melt is dry but tasted good. Like the tator tots. Scott is very nice and attentive. Hope to come for drinks and music soon.
The baseball steak and Friday prime rib are always great. The service was friendly and efficient. Nice choice of wings and appetizers. A pleasant and repeatable choice for dinner. The atmosphere was friendly.
Food was ok, service was ok, ambiance was ok ... at least they had a bar! .................... That's about all that I can say.
We went to the a on Tuesday night 10 minutes before kitchen close and we were seated and ordered burgers wings and drinks we were sat ordered and served quickly but not rushed burgers were good it was nice not to feel rushed because we like to have dinner later and it's hard with very few restaurant kitchens serving food late
