Six Places to Visit Santa in Portland This Christmas

Santa in Portland

Christmas is nearly here and that means Santa Claus is coming to town. Visiting Santa can be much more fun than standing in a long line at the mall for a quick, low-quality snapshot. We’ve got the six best places to see Santa in Portland before he takes off on Christmas Eve.

#1. HGTV’s Santa HQ at Washington Square

Santa HQ, presented by HGTV, is the mall Santa experience—but better. If you’re looking for a quick visit to see Santa in Portland, this is an experience you don’t want to miss. Kids can see how they measure up on the Naughty-or-Nice O’ Meter, download the Elf-Ray Vision app to see what’s going on in Santa’s workshop, and of course, get their picture taken with Santa. Santa HQ has online registration here , which is super handy for cutting out long wait times. And of course, the decorations are gorgeous. (What else would you expect from HGTV?)

Where: Washington Square, 9585 SW Washington Square Rd

Hours: December 9–23: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; December 24: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

How to Give: The Sharing Tree by Santa HQ is decorated with ornaments labeled with specific gifts for children in the community. Choose an ornament, purchase the gift, and return it (unwrapped) by December 20.

More Information: Washington Square Events

#2. The Holiday Express

There’s something magical about trains at Christmastime. The Holiday Express at Oaks Park Station brings vintage Christmas to life and is a unique way to visit Santa in Portland. The Oregon Pacific Railway boards passengers on a steam locomotive and takes you on a ride through the forest along the Willamette River. The train cars are decked out in full Christmas décor. And no holiday train ride would be complete without cookies and hot chocolate! Tickets sell out fast, so don’t wait to plan your train ride.

Where: The Oaks Station, 7806 SE Oaks Park Way

Hours: Saturdays and Sundays in December. Ride times start at 10 a.m. and end at 8 p.m.

How to Give: Text “Rail” to 52000 to make a $10 donation the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation

More Information: The Holiday Express

#3. Christmas in Dairyville

Dairyville at Alpenrose Dairy has more than just a visit with Santa. Dairyville is a replica of an old-west town with storefronts that have window displays and porches, an opera house, and even a storybook lane. Choirs from local organizations bring Christmas cheer, and kids will love seeing the animals on display. The opera house also shows Christmas movies and is hosting a Ralph Radio Theatre performance this year. If you’re on the hunt for a fun family experience while you see Santa in Portland, Christmas in Dairyville is a must!

Where: Alpenrose Dairy, 6149 SW Shattuck Rd

Hours: December 1–3, 8–10, 15–17: 10 a.m. to 6 pm; December 22 and 23: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ways to Give: Pick up a tag at Dairyville and donate an unwrapped gift to help children in need.

More Information: Alpenrose Dairy

#4. Sensory Santa in Portland at the Lloyd Center

The Lloyd Center has brought an amazing service to the Portland community by offering a sensory Santa. Many children diagnosed with autism would love to see Santa, but a busy mall with loud music and distracting lights can make this a negative experience for them. The Lloyd Center offers an after-hours time for children to see Santa without large crowds. The music is soft, the lights are dim, and the elves are given instructions to make smaller movements. Sensory Santa is only open for one evening, usually in November (so make a note for next year). Santa is open to the rest of the public for the remainder of the holiday season. After visiting with Santa, you can skate around the indoor ice rink where indoor snow falls every afternoon.

Where: Lloyd Center, 2201 Lloyd Center

Hours: November 24–December 24, Hours Vary

Ways to Give: Make a donation to your local autism foundation. A Hope for Autism , located in Portland, is in need of tablets and laptops right now.

More Information: Lloyd Center

#5. The Miracle of a Million Lights at Victorian Belle

This historic home is a beautiful place to see Santa in Portland. The home and grounds are decked out in over a million lights. There are also over twenty decorated trees throughout the home. Crafts, chocolate-dipped bacon, and a mini petting zoo with bunnies and turtles make this outing fun! Pictures with Santa are done by a professional photographer, so make sure you dress in your Christmas best if you’re looking for a keepsake. You can end the night by making s’mores with Rudolph outside by the fire.

Where: Victorian Belle, 1441 N McClellan Street

Hours: December 9–23, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Ways to Give: Bring a non-perishable food item for $1 off admission

More Information: Victorian Belle

#6. Hipster Santa at Pioneer Place

If you’re looking for a truly Portland experience, you’ve got to see Hipster Santa. This Santa ditched the big red coat and hat for a Pendleton sweater and a man bun. While your kids might not recognize this Santa with his naughty and nice tattoos on both arms, you’re sure to have a good conversation about your Christmas menu (if it includes a free-range turkey dinner and vegan cupcakes for dessert). If Hipster Santa isn’t quite up your alley, Pioneer Place also has a traditional Santa. Both are ready to pose for photos and listen to Christmas wishes.

Where: Pioneer Place, 700 SW Fifth Ave

Hours: See hours  here

Ways to Give: Support local artisans and shop local at Made in Oregon , located at Pioneer Place.

Our beautiful Oregon has so much to offer during the holidays! Pack the family in the car, go visit Santa in Portland, and tell him hello from all of us at Farrell Realty. Hopefully we’re still on the nice list and you are, too!

CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) — Santa Claus is coming to town, though he may have to sit behind a plexiglass barrier once he gets here.

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted most businesses, organizations and families in one way or another, but the latest round of restrictions in Oregon and Washington have not stopped Santa. Here are some of the places you can find him near Portland.

Bridgeport Village in Tigard is offering virtual visits with Santa. Families can instantly download the 5-minute video call with Old Saint Nick and share it with family and friends. Reservations are required and run Friday, Nov. 27 through Dec. 24 for $24.95.

Cabela’s Tualatin location is offering in-person visits with Santa, complete with a free 4×6 studio-quality photo. Reservations are required and can be made online now. Cabela’s is using a clear protective barrier between Santa and families.

Clackamas Town Center is also taking reservations for in-person photos beginning Friday. Santa will be separated from guests by a plexiglass barrier. Prices range from $39.99 to $49.99, according to the mall’s website.

Santa will be at Washington Square for contactless photos as well. There’s no plexiglass between visitors and Santa, but there is a barrier to make sure people stay at least 6 feet away, according to a mall spokesperson. Reservations can be made online and prices range from $39.99 to $49.99 depending on the photo package you want.

Lloyd Center’s modified Santa Land experience runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. December 12-13 and 19-23, as well as 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Families must reserve their spot in advance. Reservations open Friday on Lloyd Center’s website. Visits cost $10 with all proceeds going to the local nonprofit Howard’s Heart, which supports teens in foster care, according to a spokesperson. Bring your own phone or camera for pictures.

In Washington, Vancouver Mall is offering a contactless Santa visit beginning Nov. 27. A spokesperson for the mall said the pictures will be professionally staged to “minimize the visibility” of the 6 feet of social distance between Santa and his guests. Reservations are highly recommended and photo prices range from $39.99 to $49.99.

Cherry Hill Programs coordinates Santa photos for numerous shopping centers including Clackamas Town Center, Washington Square, Pioneer Place, and Vancouver Mall. A spokesperson told KOIN 6 News they’ve been preparing for this since spring and have put the following precautions in place:

  • Face coverings required for all guests ages 2 and up (or by local mandate)
  • Physical distancing practices on set and in line, and physical barriers where space doesn’t allow for 6 feet of separation
  • Increased disinfecting and sanitation, including hand sanitizer in high-traffic areas
  • Employees must complete a temperature check before their shift
  • No sitting on Santa’s lap

For families who’d rather skip the mall, Cherry Hill has also boarded the virtual Christmas train with its Create Holiday Magic campaign , which includes options like story time with Santa.

Santa is at the Salem Carousel playing the mandolin and visiting with kids from behind a plexiglass barrier. While all photo appointments are currently booked, carousel staff advise checking the website in case spots open up. Parents can also purchase a personalized video message from Santa for $20. For no cost at all, kids can get a personalized letter. All you have to do is fill out a form and drop it off in Santa’s mailbox next to the carousel by December 17.

Festival of the Trees

The Festival of the Trees is a magical winter wonderland filled with beautifully decorated Christmas trees and displays by local florists, businesses, designers, and volunteers. With more than 100 uniquely decorated trees and 300 businesses, this year’s 37th Festival of Trees is not one to miss. Proceeds from the event benefit Providence Children’s health. While children can see Santa at the festival, take it to the next level and sign them up for Elf Academy, where they can learn what it’s like to be one of Santa’s elves! They will get to decorate cookies, create crafts, participate in a scavenger hunt, and visit the Teddy Bear Hospital. Elf Academy is taking place December 6-7 and tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for kids ages 3-12, or buy a family pack for 2 adults and 2 children for $28! The event takes place at the Oregon Convention Center.

Santa’s Headquarters at Washington Square

Visit Santa’s headquarters at Washington Square Mall where children can be transported to the North Pole. Test out the Magic Mirror where kids can get transformed into elves, Elf-Ray Vision and the Naughty or Nice Meter! Mrs. Clause is also having story time on select days! Of course, this is a perfect place to purchase your photo with Santa. The line can build, so reserve your spot ahead of time. Santa will be at Washington Square through December 24th.

Hipster Santa

Nothing says Christmas in Portland like Hipster Santa! Located in Pioneer Place at the Lower Level Rotunda December 7-19, 12-9 pm. Sitting on a PDX Carpet chair with a bike on one side and a typewriter on the other, Hipster Santa wears skinny jeans and a cardigan and has a man bun. Photos with Hipster Santa can be purchased and spots in line can be reserved with a FastPass. Hipster Santa even has a pet night on December 9 from 5-8 pm where guests can bring their dogs & cats. They like to say “he’s like a regular Santa, but cooler”.

Bridgeport Village

Visit Santa in his cozy cottage at Bridgeport Village where photos can be purchased and Santa will hand out small toys and candy canes. Santa is at Bridgeport Village on November 23-December 24. Then, get some Christmas shopping done around the outdoor mall that is adorned in garland, ornaments, and Christmas lights! They suggest arriving 1 hour before closing if you are planning on attending in the evening. The wait time varies, and Santa will take cookie breaks every day from 3-4 pm, and on Christmas Eve from 1-2 pm.

A child and Santa touch hands at Black Santa PDX when they take pictures with Santa in portland

Grab your holiday wish list and head to these spots for meet and greets with The Big Guy and Santa pictures

There is no better time to make a family memory than the holidays—from heading out to see Christmas lights around the city, to finding that just-right tree to decorate before you’ve even finished up those Thanksgiving leftovers . While a photo in front of the tree or around the table is a way to preserve those memories, nothing says “Christmas” quite like Santa pictures. When you have the kids in tow, figuring out where Mr. Christmas himself will be is not a simple job. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best places in Portland to snap a pic with Old Saint Nick. Dress the kiddos in whatever means Christmas to you, and head out to one of these spots to make a memory that will last a lifetime (and be a spectacle in any photo album).

7 Best Things to Do for the Holidays in Portland, Oregon

There are lots of fun, family-friendly things to do in the City of Roses during the holidays, including checking out festive holiday light displays, attending community events, seeing legendary performances like "The Nutcracker" put on each year by the Oregon Ballet Theatre, and listening to Christmas music of all kinds. And thanks to the city's underlying "Keep Portland Weird" attitude, you can also expect to find plenty of wacky and unusual activities beyond the traditional holiday cheer. Here's a look at some of our favorite things to do if you're planning a trip to Portland , Oregon, during the holiday season.

Walk Along the Fantasy Trail at Wenzel Farm

Fantasy Trail Wenzel Farm Inc.

Back again during the month of December—the attraction took a brief hiatus during the pandemic but has otherwise been running annually for over 30 years—the Fantasy Trail on Wenzel Farm is made up of more than 1,000 feet of festively decorated pathway, leading visitors on a mystical journey through the woods surrounded by thousands of holiday lights.

Listen to all your favorite holiday tunes as you enjoy a stroll, then check out the Christmas scenes in the decked out 40-foot castle, as well as some of the farm's other attractions including a maze, suspension bridge, crooked house, walk-through tunnel before warming up by the bonfire.

See the Portland Courthouse Square Tree Lighting

Pioneer Courthouse Square

This annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony kicks off each holiday season in Portland. The family-friendly event, which includes the lighting of a huge 75-foot Christmas tree as well as a fun holiday sing-a-long, is typically held the day after Thanksgiving at Portland's Courthouse Square at 6 p.m. Each year, the Douglas fir tree is decorated with more than 14,000 colorful lights and stands tall until well after the holiday season ends, usually until the first week or two of January.

Be Amazed by ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo

Sam Churchill / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

During the holiday season, the  Oregon Zoo becomes a winter wonderland of decorations, sporting more than one million colorful lights. From the day after Thanksgiving until just after the New Year, you and your family can stroll the zoo's paths and check out animal-themed displays of light and motion. You will also have a chance to sip hot chocolate and snack on tasty treats, as well as enjoy live music and see other festive performances. To take it all in, ride the lighted train, jump on the carousel, or taste a variety of meals from Portland's famous food carts.

Cheer On the Portland Christmas Ship Parade

Portland's Christmas Ships Parade is an annual event held on the Columbia and Willamette rivers that features an average of 50 to 60 boats, all decked out in festive holiday lights. The parade can be viewed from a number of different public parks, bridges, and other locations throughout the city. You can also visit a Meet and Greet at Tom McCall Park and check out the boats, chat with the folks who sail them, and see Santa up close. The Christmas Ships Parade, an annual tradition since 1954 takes place for several weeks in December. Check the schedule online to see when each fleet will be sailing down each of the respective rivers.

Attend a Holiday Theater Performance

Portland's Singing Christmas Tree

A number of holiday-themed plays and musicals tend to appear in Portland's many theaters this time of year, often running for several weeks during the winter season, so check your favorite theater's website to see what'll be playing when you're in town.

George Balanchine's "The Nutcracker" has become a popular annual event, performed by the legendary Oregon Ballet Theatre company with its gorgeous sets and well-known musical score. No other show has become a holiday tradition for so many. Performances are scheduled throughout the month of December, and are a dazzling and memorable way to enjoy the magic of the season.

Something else you can expect to see here every holiday season is  Portland's Singing Christmas Tree , an annual event that has been bringing holiday joy to the Pacific Northwest since 1962. Each year, more than 350 adult and young singers perform holiday classics and contemporary renditions of Christmas songs at the Sunset Presbyterian Church. Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment, as these popular performances tend to fill up fast.

Visit The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights

The Grotto, a 62-acre Catholic Shrine and botanical garden in Portland, presents the Christmas Festival of Lights each year. This walk-through event includes a variety of family-friendly experiences held in a beautiful setting. In addition to spectacular outdoor lighting displays, visitors can enjoy indoor holiday music concerts, puppet shows, songs performed by carolers, holiday snacks and beverages, and access to a petting zoo. The Christmas Festival of Lights typically runs from Thanksgiving weekend through Christmas week.

Experience Winter Wonderland Portland

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland Portland , one of the largest holiday-themed light shows in the Northwest , is held at the Portland International Raceway each winter season. You and your family won't even have to worry about the cold—guests stay in their cars and drive through this festive holiday experience, which is great to experience even on especially cold or rainy evenings. Guests will get to see more than 250 colorful light displays, including 40 fully animated scenes, all presented right on the famous raceway. Winter Wonderland opens the day after Thanksgiving and stays open until just after the New Year.

Nob Hill Christmas Historical Society is Proud to host Santa Land.  Restoring Portland's most cherished past memories of Christmas, we have collected parts of the Historic  Meyer and Frank Santa Land  and window displays, as well as the Alpenrose Storybook lane, and Combined Circus and several other department store decorations.  Our mission is to keep these things in good condition and available for Families to come see every Christmas.

The Nob Hill Christmas Santa Land is open free to visit Daily, check out Google listing for current hours. And on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm Santa himself comes to visit. We were lucky to run in to Santa while at the Alpenrose Dairy and he agreed to come visit the children at our Santa Land.

Only a portion of our collection is currently on display, each year we are working on restoring additional components and building some new ones to help Santa Land grow.

In addition on Main st in Downtown Oregon City several of the department store windows displays are setup each year.  Scenes such as the Nutcracker, 5 Golden rings and Blitzen are reassembled in donated store fronts and available for all to visit.

nob-hill-xmas-calendar-23

We hope to see you this year, and Merry Christmas.

Our santa story.

It started with the Meier and Frank window Displays.  With Macy's leaving Portland, the future of the 10th floor Santa Land was uncertain.  Santa Land had been moved from the 10th floor to the basement when Macy’s took over.  Much of the once wonderful Santa Land had already been removed and shipped out to other Macy stores.  We bought the remaining pieces which included 2 complete window displays the “Nutcracker" and “Carolers” which are now displayed each year in Oregon City on Main st.  After the first year being back on Main st, we were contacted by a carpenter from Meier and Frank.  When Meier and Frank closed he had took the animatronics  from the 12 days of Christmas back to his shop.  We have been working on restoring the 12 days to also be placed back in window displays during Christmas Time.  You can see several of the Geese are currently hanging out in Santa Land waiting for the rest of their window to be recreated.

When Alpenrose Dairy was sold it left a long legacy of community events and of course Christmas.  Several organizations moved but the small town that we all remember as Storybook Ln, along with the Opera House, Phylis’s Pianos, and more were all put up to auction.  Along with a few other collectors we were able to acquire many parts of this Portland tradition.  Kittens in Mittens and Peter Rabbit’s house both now are at Santa Land, along with the Water Wagon and 2 other Wagons from the Alpenrose Combined Circus.  Many other small parts and pieces came along as well, like the Portland area N Trak club house sign and several more.  The Combined Circus Water Wagon was also made in to the Nob Hill annual custom Ornament 2022 so you can have a small wagon of your own.  We were fortunate enough to also get a few rows of seats and the reels of film from the Opera House so we will be showing those movies daily.

After the local tv show the Librarians ended there was a beautiful Sleigh from one of the episodes that we were able to trade for.  Being more modern we set up the Sleigh so families can get in, and take photos.

From Alpenrose we ran in to the Portland Area N Trak club and along with Columbia N Track built a fresh layout for Nob Hill, housed in a glass case this N scale train layout is just like the larger layout that lived at Alpenrose and lives by the front door for kids to enjoy.  We also have a O Scale set that travels around Santa land and features a Daylight 4449 train which you can ride in person at Oaks Park during Christmas ( https://orhf.org/events/ holiday-express/ )

And then there are the Elves…  They come from all over but mostly we are having to find them on the east coast.  Department store Christmas displays were much larger in the Mid West and East Coast. These small animatronics are no longer made and the only way to find them is from these old department stores as they shut down or downsize.  There are 2 main manufacturers, David Hamburger and Telco, both had provided animatronics to the majority of American Christmas displays.

There are so many little parts and pieces, almost every piece around here has its own history, each a piece of Christmas past, being put back together for Christmas Future and for our kids kids to enjoy.  Look for the small information boards when you visit for more history.

The Santa Experience is a very special storybook visit with Santa. It includes milk and cookies with Santa, finding your name in the Nice Book, painting toys with Santa and so much more! All the time, Miriam Haugen is photographing for the purpose of creating nostalgic art pieces for your family.

2. Our traditional indoor set with Santa's workshop is the second option.  This is in our studio with high ceilings and lots of air flow. Pajamas and nightgowns give this set just the right vintage look.  Ask for our 5 Step Safety Protocol to learn more.

This is the most fabulous, fabulous thing I have ever done. I could cry. This was the perfect time. I am so glad I did the Santa Experience!

I worry about missing this time in his life when he is so innocent and believes in the magic of Christmas. He is growing up so fast!

Months later, he still remembers every detail. He has been hoarding his magic box, taking it with him everywhere and showing it to everyone in the family. The storybook and wall art are precious to all of us because it will help us remember this magical time.

"Childhood is too short to let slip away."

How it works.

Introducing: Black Santa Dark Roast Coffee

s609702801434847924_p72_i1_w1080

Leroy Barber, Portland's Black Santa, has teamed up with us to create the Black Santa Dark Roast, a chocolatey, rich, and smooth Honduran coffee!

These coffee beans are ideal for espresso drinks or for the dark coffee enthusiasts among us. We import them directly from Coffeerama Farms in Honduras, operated by our friend Erlin Barillas. The coffee features rich, bold, notes of chocolate with some roast character that make for an excellent black cup of coffee or shine through in milk-based drinks.

We import ethically traded coffee so you can enjoy your cup knowing the farmers and harvesters received fair pay.

We expect initial orders will ship on January 14th.

Portland’s Black Santa is back for another year of Christmas cheer

Here comes Santa Claus, he’s Black Santa Claus; Leroy Barber is his name.

The popular local tradition is back for another year as Barber, aka Black Santa, spreads Christmas joy at different events around the Rose City. On Sunday, Dec. 18, Santa sat in front of his inflatable globe, welcoming kids of all ages on Northeast Alberta Street for free photos and gifts for the good little boys and girls who patiently waited in a line that wrapped around the block.

Portland's 'Black Santa' spreads cheer to kids and adults alike

A Portland tradition is back! Black Santa is making Christmas dreams come true for kids and adults all over the city.

He is also on a mission to spread cheer and inclusivity during the holiday season.

Black Santa originated in Atlanta, Georgia and when the Barber family moved to Portland nearly a decade ago they wanted to continue this tradition.

Portland Santa Sightings

Santa Claus is coming to town. In fact, there are rumors he’s already been spotted in some nearby malls.

As One of Portland’s Few Black Santas, Leroy Barber Couldn’t Just Cancel This Year. His Solution? A Giant Snow Globe.

It’s the best way he could think of to preserve a tradition that, in his view, holds more significance than simply marking the season.

Being Santa Claus during the COVID-19 pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted just about everything this year, including holiday traditions like visits with Santa Claus. But even amid this year’s challenges, the professionals who play St. Nick have managed to get creative by adapting their visits online or at a distance.

SAMANTHA BROWN'S PLACES TO LOVE: Portland, Oregon

Samantha (left) then visits Freeland Distillery where Master Distiller Molly Troupe guides her through a tasting of the unique gin flavors, she creates that make Freeland a local standout, including cherry blossom and forest.

Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. on KPBS TV / Stream now with the PBS App + Encore Wednesday, May 8 at 3:30 p.m. on KPBS TV

The City of Roses surrounds Samantha in beautiful blooms as she begins her tour of Portland’s International Rose Test Garden and learns from Curator Rachel Burlington how the city earned its nickname. Samantha finds Portland to be a place where creators of all types flourish when she meets the chefs and entrepreneurs behind the Dame Collective of restaurants: Lauro Romero and Jane Smith. Samantha samples food from Chef Lauro’s eatery, Clandestino.

Delving further into Portland’s food scene, Samantha meets Hector Zamora, an immigrant whose dream of bringing the best in Guatemalan coffee to America resulted in founding his coffee shop, Cafe Zamora, which has become a highlight of the Portland coffee scene.

Samantha then visits Freeland Distillery where Master Distiller Molly Troupe guides her through a tasting of the unique gin flavors, she creates that make Freeland a local standout, including cherry blossom and forest. Sam finds delicious offerings at her next stop, too—the L’il America food pod, a cluster of food trucks owned and operated by a rainbow coalition of Portland’s best food entrepreneurs whose offerings represent their heritage, proclivities, and the best Portland has to offer.

Then it's on to Steelport where Samantha learns from owner and knife-maker, Eytan Zias , the fine art of sharpening knives forged and hand-crafted in Portland using all American-made materials. While making knives in his shop, Eytan wears an all-leather apron hand-made at Samantha’s next stop— Orox Leather . Here, Samantha speaks with father and son team Jose and Levi Martinez about their own immigrant experience and how they established a successful business handcrafting everything from leather aprons to purses, backpacks, wallets, and even hats.

Next, Samantha ventures outside the city for an inspiring trip down the Tualatin River with the team from Adventures Without Limits , an outdoor adventure company serving people whose physical and mental limitations might otherwise keep them from experiencing the great outdoors.

Samantha wraps up her trip at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and gets a hands-on lesson in what it took to be a successful pioneer from Interpreter John Jarvie.
