Kinkaid Lake

Located near Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, the park doesn’t have any towns or homes around the lake. Instead, it’s surrounded by sandstone cliffs. This makes it perfect for camping at the Johnson Creek Recreation Area , located on a finger of the lake. It’s also a great launching spot for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and biking. Remember to bring water shoes to climb and splash in the Kinkaid Lake Spillway ! Located at the end of Kinkaid Lake , this three-level waterfall and pool can help you cool down on a hot day. Lake Shelbyville

Enjoy a summer escape in the heart of central Illinois at Lake Shelbyville! Whether you want to relax on the beach, go hiking, hunting, or fishing, this Midwestern gem has plenty to entertain your family. In the summer, soak up the sun at one of the four beaches located along the lake. Or, head to the Aquatic Center to take a dip in the zero-entry pool. Rock Springs Conservation Area

Families visiting Decatur can escape into nature at the Rock Springs Conservation Area. Home to a Nature Center with hands-on exhibits alongside a restored 19th-century farmhouse (the Trobaugh-Good House), it’s the perfect place to entertain kids for a few hours. They’ll learn all about life on the Illinois Grand Prairie in 1860, and maybe even see a live history demonstration! After you visit the nature center and farm, you can explore multiple miles of trails, including easy options for kids. Hike the Prairie Path , Discovery Trail, or Bluestem Loop. Depending on the season, guided hikes are also available, like through the wildflowers. Don’t forget to get a peep at deer, birds, and other animals from the Window on Wildlife! 

Boo Castle Park

One of the best-kept secrets in Illinois is Boo Castle Park . Near Carbondale, this private park commemorates the life of Jeremy “Boo” Rochman. It’s also a fan favorite among Dungeons & Dragons players. Even if your kids don’t like D&D, the park features a ton of cool wizard statues. Kids can climb them, run around the open space, and even navigate a castle maze! Little ones will love exploring the park and hopping on their favorite dragons to take photos. Shawnee National Forest

From beautiful woodlands to rolling hills and clear lakes, Shawnee National Forest is truly a sight to behold! Located in southern Illinois between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, the forest boasts a beautifully diverse landscape: rolling hills, lakes, forests, creeks, and rugged bluffs. A particularly famous area here is the Garden of the Gods, one of the most photographed spots in the state! Families can see unique sandstone rock formations from The Observation Trail . It provides panoramic views of the surrounding Garden of the God Wilderness. Or, head to Jackson Falls located near the town of Ozark for awesome rock climbing. Aikman Wildlife Adventure offers families a unique animal experience. If you’re tired of seeing animals in far-away enclosures, this drive-through zoo in Arcola is the only of its kind in Illinois. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum

A great educational destination for kids in Illinois is the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. It’s a massive library that houses papers from Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, the Civil War, and even some of the original furnishings and personal possessions in the White House during Lincoln’s time. Children will enjoy acquiring knowledge about all aspects of life in Illinois during the 19th century through tons of artifacts and displays, from Lincoln’s bed to his rocking chair, personal pictures, etc.

In addition to interesting exhibits , there are plenty of interactive stations including a scavenger hunt. Children can work together on teams to identify clues, search for missing objects, and then solve riddles based on gathered information to solve a mystery! Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

For an educational experience in Southern Illinois, bring kids to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Located near Collinsville just across from East St. Louis, this historic park features an interactive museum built on an ancient Mississippian native settlement, aka the mounds. Though the interpretive center is closed until further notice for renovations, families can still learn more about this prehistoric native civilization by exploring the property by themselves or taking a guided tour. Guided tours are available Wednesday through Sunday at 1 PM. In addition to various trails on the north side of Collinsville Road, most of which are family-friendly, kids will also get the chance to climb up Monks Mound , the largest earthwork in North America. Plus, you can experience an ancient sun calendar, Woodhenge. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop for a cute souvenir to take home! 

Road Trip Along Route 66

Drive on one of America’s oldest highways when you take a family road trip on Route 66! This scenic byway stretches across Illinois, featuring fading neon signs, drive-in theaters, and retro gas stations. Families will find plenty of places to stop for a fun photo or explore. Start in Litchfield, where kids can cool off at Milnot Beach at Lake Lou Yaeger. For lunch, a stop at the famous Ariston Cafe is a must. Then, enjoy a movie at The Litchfield Skyview Drive-In , a 50s-themed theater! Further north on Route 66, you’ll also pass Springfield. In addition to its history with Abraham Lincoln, this sleepy city is also home to The Illinois State Fairgrounds , which runs the first week in August annually. Don’t miss the Cozy Dog Drive-In or bring kids who are true car enthusiasts to the Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill to see some classic cars! 

Other iconic sights along Route 66 include The Dana Thomas House , designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Maldaner’s Restaurant , a fine dining restaurant, and Route History , a unique souvenir shop that teaches kids more about African American history in Illinois.

Big things come in small packages! We were surprised by the number of things to do in Southern Illinois. Here’s a list of 37 family-friendly things to do in Southern Illinois, grouped by region.

How this Post is Organized

Southern Illinois is packed with attractions and options for families. Many of these stops are unique and could be just right for what you specifically need. Therefore, I’ve put my effort into describing the attraction instead of rating it. 

The list below is grouped by region, beginning with the very southern tip of Illinois. Scroll down to the region you’re in or read the entire post through to see all that’s available! And if you’re needing a place to stay, check out these Illinois hotels and vacation rentals.

We’ve put our feature stop at the very top of the list.

Ilinois’ Far Southern Tip

Illinois’ Southern Point is quite a place. This region was born by two rivers—the Mississippi and the Ohio—which combine to form the State’s southernmost tip. Scenic landscapes, remarkable history, and plenty of fun can all be found here. 

#1 Save the Day!

Superman, metropolis.

We chose to just have fun. It was the right choice after a week of Civil War battles and Civil Rights stops in the Deep South. So we gladly followed the Roadtrippers app to Metropolis, Illinois. 

I’ve been through my share of midwest towns but this one stole my heart. Metropolis is your typical river town with its own assortment of railroad tracks , tired brick buildings, and overgrown lawns. And then there’s Superman!

No, I’m not a Superman fan. It’s the town that make it so fun . The town is smaller than its grand name, but it doesn’t let that stop it from having a good time. You feel like that you’re visiting some silly grandpa who you can’t help but admire. 

We happened to arrive just at the close of a local Comic-Con. Stands and rides were shutting down but there was still plenty to see. Costumed superheroes strolled the streets and posed for pictures. 

Superman dominates Metropolis’ downtown area. His enormous statue protects the city courthouse from any danger that may make its way down Market Street. The 2 ton bronze statue is nearly as tall as the building behind it.

The Super Museum stands adjacent to its subject. The building is an attraction of its own, offering plenty of fun and amusement. We enjoyed the store which was packed with all things Superman, but passed on the museum. 

Various stores and some gift shops line Market street, and a number of businesses have fun with the Super theme. Lois Lane stands at the end of downtown, looking for facts on her next story. 

How to Find Great Roadtrip Stops Like Metropolis

We didn’t happen upon Metropolis by accident. In fact, if it wasn’t for the Roadtrippers App we would likely have driven right past this great town. Metropolis was a great place for a family road trip stop. As I prepared this post I was struck by how many of our photos showed us smiling. This is the stuff that great road trips are made of. 

#2 Report to Fort Massac

Fort massac state park, metropolis.

Fort Massac State Park is one of the coolest historic sites in Southern Illinois. For one, its history goes back several centuries. A Spanish fort may have been built in the area as early as 1540. 

The original Fort Massac served as an outpost of New France and was abandoned after the French lost their North American colonies in the French and Indian War. The native Chickasaw nation destroyed the complex sometime after 1763. 

Fort Massac is best known as a staging point for George Rogers Clark and his regiment of “Long Knives”. In 1778 Clark and his militiamen fought a campaign that won the Illinois country from British control. Important sites of the Illinois Campaign can be found all over Southern Illinois.

Today you can see Fort Massac as it would have looked around 1802, just before the arrival of Lewis and Clark. William Clark was the younger brother of George Rogers Clark, and was working with Meriwether Lewis to prepare their Corps of Discovery that would explore the Louisiana Purchase.

Illinois’ first state park sits on a beautiful stretch of the Ohio river. Be sure to look into the Fort Massac Encampment Festival and the interpretive programs held throughout the year. 

#3 Prepare with Lewis & Clark

Lewis & clark national historic trail, southern illinois.

Illinois offers a great stretch of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail . The trail follows two of America’s greatest rivers along the forested bluffs of the Shawnee Hills. Ancient indigenous sites and remnants of New France can be seen all along the route.

Nearby National Parks can add even more to your experience. Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park offers a glimpse of what Louisiana would have looked like in the days of Lewis and Clark.

Gateway Arch National Park gives a big-picture view of the significance of the Louisiana Purchase, the Corps of Discovery, and America’s westward expansion.

Paddle amid 800 hundred year old bald cypress trees at Eagle Pond or enjoy flocks of migratory birds. See if you can catch a glimpse of the Indiana Bat, an endangered species that lives at this refuge.

Cypress Creek’s bottomland hardwood forests harbor both local wildlife and migratory waterfowl. The refuge is also one of the few wildlife parks to be located along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

This natural space offers a way to travel back in time and consider centuries of natural, indigenous, and United States History.

#5 Trek the Trail of Tears

Southern Illinois holds a unique stretch of America’s tragic trail. The Cherokee experienced extreme hardship as they made their winter journey across this region.

The Illinois segment of the Trail of Tears NHT includes several historic and natural sites.

Gaconda saw the crossing of the Cherokee into the state of Illinois. Illinois is one of the few places where trail ruts can still be seen. Trail of Tears State Forest and Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge offer landscapes largely unchanged from the 1830s. 

Hamburg Hill is the chief Trail of Tears Landmark in Illinois. The Cherokee suffered in freezing temperatures as they waited for the Mississippi River to thaw. Local landowners refused to allow them to camp on their land or cut down wood for warmth.

Trail of Tears State Park lies just across the Mississippi in the state of Missouri.

#6 Bike the Tunnel Hill State Trail

Take in South Illinois’ scenic beauty via this 45 mile bike trail. The Tunnel Hill State Trail follows original railway paths to bring you through some of Illinois’ most beautiful countryside. The trail intersects the River to River Trail (see below), the Trail of Tears (see above), and the Cache River State Natural Area (#8).

#7 Hike the River to River Trail

Looking for something epic? The River to River Trail challenges you to hike the distance between Illinois’ two great rivers. The 160 mile trail runs from the Mississippi River on the west to the Ohio River on the East.

This trail guides you into remote areas of the Shawnee Hills, five nationally designated natural areas, and several state parks. Landmarks include Cedar Lake, Garden of the Gods, and several beautiful views of the Mississippi River. 

A wide range of wildlife can be spotted along the trail. Keep an eye out for bald eagle, armadillo, and red fox as you pass through the forests, grasslands, and wetlands that make up this remarkable trek.

#8 Discover Illinois’ Rich Ecosystems

A wealth of natural wonder resides at Cache River State Natural Area . The 16,000 acre park is home to 113 rare and endangered species, ancient forests, and a gargantuan Cherrybark Oak Tree. 

The Park’s bottomland hardwood forest are composed of ancient, enormous cypress trees. Some of these trees are 1000 years old and one of them is the largest in the entire state. Explore this remarkable area via canoe, kayak, or the park’s 20 miles of hiking trails.

#9 Relax by the Water

Enjoy quiet waters, lush greenery, and massive stone clefts at Bell Smith Springs . This scenic area has a reputation for beauty and tranquility.

The eight mile trail system allows for easy access to the area’s clear streams and bizarre rock formations including Devil’s Backbone, Boulder Falls, and a natural bridge.

#10 Explore an Illinois Wilderness

Hike the wilderness in a quiet corner of Illinois. Lusk Creek Canyon Nature Preserve encloses the large, scenic canyon of Lusk Creek, rare native plants, and local wildlife. At 4,796 acres, you’re sure to get some moments of quiet solitude.

#11 Experience the Shawnee Hills

Ferne Clyffe is a great place to experience Illinois’ Shawnee Hills. The 2,430 acre park has long been known for its secluded waterfalls, fern covered rock formations, and wide scenic views.

The Big Rocky Hollow Trail   makes an easy and rewarding hike for the family. You can enjoy Ferne Clyffe’s rugged beauty on this 0.7 mile trail.

#12 Plumb a Pirate Cave

A notorious cave lies at the very edge of southeastern Illinois. Cave-In-Rock State Park recalls a time when pirates and outlaws terrorized America’s rivers. The 55 foot wide cave inhabits a bluff overlooking Ohio River. 

Cave-in-Rock State Park has a lot to offer families.The Park includes a playground, eatery, cabins, nature trail. Swallows nest among the river bluffs and a ferry serves people who are ready to cross the river. 

#13 Search Out the Bluffs

Wind about caves, crags, and clefts on this adventurous 1.7 mile trail . The loop trail follows the rim of a rock cliff before venturing down between tall, rock slabs.

Historic Ox-Lot Cave has hosted Native Americans as well as early pioneers.

Rim Rock National Recreation Trail includes a picnic area as well as vault toilets.

#14 Behold the Garden of the Gods

Don’t miss out on the most-loved landmark of the Shawnee Hills. The Garden of the Gods seems to combine the best of the Shawnee Hills into one place. Bizarre landforms and incredible views make this place an extraordinary excursion. 

A short trail and interpretive signs guide you through the natural history behind the Garden of the Gods.

Camping, hiking, horse riding, hunting, birdwatching, and picnicking are all welcome here. 

#15 Spot Some Wildlife

Watch river otters, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys in action at this 44,000 wildlife refuge. Crab Orchard NWR holds an array of ecosystems including upland forests, bottomland hardwood forests, bushland, prairie, and wetlands. Nearly all of the refuge is officially designated wilderness.

It’s no wonder then that local wildlife abounds here. You’re likely to see one of the five pairs of eagles that dwell in this refuge.

Eastern bluebirds, indigo buntings, white-eyed vireos, and summer tanagers are only few of the bird species that frequent this natural haven. 

#16 Wander Through a Giant City

Ready for something weird? Giant City State Park is one of the better-known natural wonders of the Shawnee National Forest, and a great place to get active outdoors. The Park takes its name from the enormous, fantastic sandstone formations found throughout the park.

Giant City Nature Trail is the park’s most popular hike . The easy, 1 mile loop trail guides you through the “Giant City Streets”, gargantuan blocks of rock. Fern, moss, shrubs, and wildflowers, and trees lend a gentle beauty to these ancient rocks.

Giant City Lodge has its own appeal. The historic lodge was build by the CCC in 1937 and still hosts guests today. Dine at the Bald Knob Dining Room, peruse the gift shop, and stay at one of the three kinds of cabins offered by the Lodge.

This wonderful park welcomes hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing and several other activities. 85 developed campsites invite you to stay in the park. Be sure to contact the Giant City Visitor Center to get all of the information you’ll need.

#17 Celebrate African American Heritage

Hear stories of heroism and determination at the African American Museum of Southern Illinois . This grassroots museum showcases outstanding citizens of African American History. You’ll find the museum in Carbondale’s University Mall near the Science Center of Southern Illinois.

#18 Build Your Scientific Knowledge

Here’s one of the funnest destinations in the area! The Science Center of Southern Illinois is a well loved educational powerhouse. This small-but-mighty museum is packed with educational exhibits and learning opportunities. 

This interactive, reasonably-priced museum has made a name for itself. Monthly events give children the chance to get hands-on experience in scientific study.

The Center also offers an impressive array of birthday party science activities.  

#19 Get Dramatic

Mcleod theater, carbondale.

Enjoy theatrical excellence at the McLeod Theater. Southern Illinois University’s well-rated theater performs a range of productions from Shakespearian works to hard-rock musicals. The McLeod’s stage is active throughout the school year and even continues over the summer months . 

#20 Play with a Dragon

Boo castle park, carbondale.

Here’s a stop that we just couldn’t leave out. Boo Rachman Memorial Park may be the greatest kid’s park in all of Illinois. Children can scramble over a life-size dragon, talk with wizards, and defend castles at this magical place.

This privately owned park was built in memory of Jeremy “Boo” Rachman, an artistic man who died in a tragic car accident. Boo excelled in fantasy artwork and many of the park’s features are taken directly from his works. 

Boo Castle Park welcomes the public to play and explore. No entrance fee is required, but donations are always appreciated.

The Shawnee Hills host a tiny treasure. Wild flowers and rock formations make the Little Grand Canyon a favorite local excursion. A 3.4 mile loop trail offers an easy and scenic Illinois adventure.

Spring and fall are the best seasons for wild flowers in the Little Grand Canyon.

#22 Get Wet

Southern Illinois is has a lot to offer in the way of lakeside fun. The scenic beauty of the Shawnees and the quiet countryside make for ideal conditions. Southern Illinois is lovely enough to enjoy and overlooked enough to be empty!

Cedar Lake, Rend Lake, and Carlyle Reservoir are only three of the dozen of lakes found in Southern Illinois. Catch largemouth bass, canoe, and relax in lakeside solitude.

#23 Dine at a Farmhouse Brewery

Taste a new side of beer at a genuine farmhouse brewery. Beer was a home-made product for much of its history. Scratch Brewery offers an opportunity to experience beer that is both traditional and unconventional at the same time!

Scratch brewery plays with a variety of flavors and spices. A number of Scratch’s brews forgo hops for other spices and flavors.

All of their beers use locally farmed ingredients including elderberry, maple sap, hickory, juniper, and chanterelle mushrooms. This microbrewery’s drink list changes weekly and seasonally.

Scratch is well loved for its food and location as well. The rustic brewery is off the beaten path in a quiet corner of forestland.

The menu includes wood-fired pizza and a picnic plate built of locally sourced ingredients.

Southwest Illinois

Southwest Illinois may be the most historic region of the state. This region holds the ruins of an ancient metropolis, remnants of New France, Lewis & Clark’s Camp Dubois, and a historic state capitol!

Finally, St. Louis, MO is just across the river offering plenty of additional options to this fun part of Illinois.

#24 Be Inspired

Creative opportunities abound at Cedarhurst Center of the Arts . This highly-rated museum has several admirable qualities offered at an inexpensive price. 

Cedarhurst has a strong collection of works by American artists including Cassatt, Eakins, and J. Alden Weir. The beautiful Goldman-Kuenz Sculpture Park is one of the largest sculpture gardens in the midwest, featuring dozens of sculptures over the 80 lush acres.

The Cedarhurst Center of the Arts is best known for its events and activities. This is an art museum where children are welcomed and encouraged to explore the wonders of creative expression. Be sure to look into upcoming events and activities as you plan your trip to this delightful museum.

#25 Defend New France

Illinois and Missouri share a remarkable stretch of the Mississippi River. Vestiges of what was once New France still endure in small towns such as Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and Prairie du Rocher, Illinois. Fort de Chartres stands at the heart of this historic region.

This French Colonial fort began as a wooden structure but was upgraded to a stone fortification at around the outbreak of the French and Indian War (1754). 

The British won all of France’s New World colonies but quickly found that they couldn’t sustain their enormous new empire. Fort de Chartres was abandoned and fell into disrepair. 

Lewis and Clark noted the ruined fort in their journal as they traveled up to St. Louis in 1803.

Today you can inspect the French Fort at Fort Chartres State Historic Site . The reconstructed fort stands restored to the days when it served as the chief military base of the Pais de Illinois. Year-round events invite you to experience life as it once was three centuries ago. 

This remarkable state park has a lot going for it even on quiet days. It’s out-of-the-way location deters crowds. At the same time, the fort is surrounded by an array of historic French towns, buildings, and battles. 

#26 Explore a Prehistoric Metropolis

My favorite Illinois historic site is the ancient city of Cahokia . This indigenous metropolis dominated the Mississippi Valley long before the founding of modern St. Louis.

Today you can still see the remnants of this mighty city at this UNESCO World Heritage site .

Cahokia may be the best place to learn about the Mississippian Culture , an important part of North American indigenous history.

Cahokia was a sophisticated, organized city that sprawled across 6 square miles. Over 100 ruins still bear witness to the power and culture of this medieval metropolis.

Cahokia’s main features are the enormous earthen mounds found throughout the park. It’s difficult to not be impressed by the precision and planning that went into building this city.

Even today you can tell that the mounds were built with specific shapes, proportions, and placements. Cahokia’s structures held sacred, political, and memorial significance for its inhabitants. 

Monks Mound dominates the Cahokia complex. The 100 foot tall platform mound is the largest indigenous structure in the United States. The multi-level mound towers over the city’s central plaza. 

Cahokia’s visitor center is a great starting place for your visit to their remarkable site. Actual artifacts and historical reproductions help you envision what took place here. Be sure to also see Woodhenge, Cahokia’s astronomical observatory.

#27 Join the Corps of Discovery

Southwestern Illinois holds one of the most important sites of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. Camp Dubois was the starting point for the Corps of the Discovery. It was here that Lewis and Clark made their final preparations for their epic quest across the American West.

Lewis and Clark State Historic Site is a great starting point for learning about the Corps of Discovery expedition . The visitor center is rich in educational exhibits including a life-size reconstruction of the expedition’s Keelboat.

Take a walk through the reconstructed Camp Dubois to learn about the men and preparations that built the Corps of Discovery.

Don’t miss the chance to get one of the best vistas in Southern Illinois! Confluence Tower provides a bird’s eye view of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The tower is only a short drive from the Camp Dubois visitor center. 

#28 Chill Out at a Historic Bar

Ok, here’s a great stop for the parents! Fast Eddie’s Bon Air is one of America’s legendary bars. The establishment was bought from Anheuser-Busch in 1921 and has become legendary for live entertainment, great food, and a retro vibe.

It isn’t hard to see why this place is highly rated. Fast Eddie’s provides great live music daily. Fast Eddie’s food is well known and well loved. In the words of one happy customer “their food is good, hot, and affordable.”

Fast Eddie’s menu is built of creative and delicious dishes such as Peel-n-Eat Shrimp and Big Elwood on a Stick, a shish kebab of marinated tenderloin and grilled peppers. This beer-focused bar has 400 seats as well as comfortable outdoor areas.  

That said, this is a bar. You must be 21 years or older to enter and they only accept cash. So this is a parents-only destination.

#29 Follow Lincoln into Politics

A place with a name like “Vandalia” must have something stately in it. You can tour Illinois’ fourth statehouse in this historic community. Vandalia was Illinois’ state capitol from 1836 to 1839 and saw Lincoln’s service as state representative.

You can explore the historic state house via guided or self-guided tours. Special events include a Lincoln’s Birthday Observance in February, The Grand Levee in June, and a Christmas Open House.

Vandalia holds another distinction in United States history. This city is the terminus of the National Road , the first major, interstate roadway in U.S. History. 

South Central Illinois

#30 Make a visit to the Lincoln Family

Abraham Lincoln owned only one house in his lifetime, and that home still stands today. Lincoln Home National Historic Site may be the best place to experience Lincoln as a man and an American. The quiet, two-story building has much to tell about Abraham as a spouse, a father, a friend, and a neighbor.

This house also reminds us that Lincoln’s story doesn’t belong to him alone. He benefited from the support of his family, friends, and community. For example, Mary Todd Lincoln’s story is no less remarkable than that her husband. 

Mary was born in a rich Southern family and received an outstanding education. She bucked convention and family disapproval by marrying a commoner. These hardships would only increase with the onset of the Civil War. 

The Lincoln home tells the story of the Lincoln family from their earliest years as family right up to the Lincoln presidency. It was here that their sons were born and here that three-year old Edward died of illness.

Additionally, each room provides insight into what it was to live in frontier America in the mid-nineteenth century.

Know Before You Go

Lincoln Home NHS provides free ranger-led tours of the Lincoln home. However, the tours do require tickets and these tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Plan ahead and arrive early to ensure the best possible experience.

There’s a lot more than one house at Lincoln Home National Historic Site. The park also includes the neighborhood surrounding the Lincoln home. Twelve additional historic houses yield a glimpse of what life was like in mid-nineteenth century America. 

Visit the homes of supporters and opponents of Lincoln, abolition activists, and personal friends of the Lincoln family. Even better, living history demonstrations take place throughout Lincoln’s historic neighborhood.

#31 Walk a Mile in Abe’s Shoes

Springfield holds one the best museums in Illinois as well as one of the best Presidential Libraries in the nation.

You can experience the life and times of the 16th president through full size replicas of key moments of Lincoln’s lifetime at this world-class museum . Two galleries tell the personal and public story of Lincoln from his birth to his death. 

Additionally, the Museum’s Treasure gallery features noteworthy artifacts from the president’s lifetime and presidency. These exhibits are regularly changing in order to preserve the artifacts and allow visitors to see new artifacts every time they visit. 

This highly-rated museum also includes a variety of educational movies as well as a well-designed child play zone. Lincoln’s Attic allows children to enter into Lincoln’s America through a variety of hands-on activities.

#32 See Double at the Illinois Capitol

How many state capitols hold two capitol buildings? Springfield allows you the chance to explore the Illinois capitol, past and present. 

Illinois’ current state capitol is historic in its own right. The ornate building was built in 1877 and crowned with a 405 foot dome. Visitors are welcome to watch sessions of the Illinois legislature from the capitol’s upper gallery seating. 

Springfield’s Old State Capitol is a reconstruction that was built during the Civil Rights Movement . This was Illinois’ fifth state house and the capitol that is is most associated with Lincoln’s service as a lawyer and lawmaker.

It was here that Lincoln uttered his famous “House Divided” speech.

#33 Build Healthy Habits

Kidzeum is a children’s museum with a twist. This highly-rated museum uses interactive exhibits and fun activities to teach children what healthy looks like. The museum’s three floors invite children to learn what’s involved in a healthy world, healthy community, and healthy body. 

By far, Kidzeum’s biggest attraction is Active Alex, a three story play structure/exhibit. Your kids can explore health and body systems as they explore Alex’s 40 foot tall body. 

NOTE: Sensory children may have difficulty with the abundance of sights and sounds of this museum.

Southeast Illinois

Explore an enormous eye, crack a case, and service a muscle car at the Children’s Museum of Illinois . This well-rated museum features numerous activities on its two floors.

The Children’s Museum of Illinois overlooks beautiful Lake Decatur and is located next to the Scoville Zoo and the Scoville Gardens. 

#35 Honor a Revolutionary War Hero

George rogers clark national historical park, vincennes, in.

Here’s a remarkable National Park that’s just outside of Southeast Illinois. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park remembers one of the most important and most overlooked victories of the Revolutionary War. This park is a great place to learn about Illinois’ French Heritage, the Revolutionary War, and the Old Northwest.

George Rogers Clark NHP is built on the site of the most important battle of the Illinois Campaign. Clark and a contingent of French and American frontiersmen marched through the frigid, winter conditions to recapture Fort Sackville. Their landmark victory won the entire Northwest territory from the British, virtually doubling the United States. 

In spite of its name, George Rogers Clark NHP also pays tribute to the French leaders and soldiers who ensured an American victory. This contribution is evident both in the monuments as well as the visitor center. 

Here’s a fun fact: how many national memorials permit fishing? George Rogers Clark National Historical Park welcomes fishing from the Wabash River.

Also be sure to take advantage of the interpretive signs and historic weapons demonstrations that can be found at this battlefield park.

#36 Farm with the Lincolns

Visit the Illinois frontier at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site . The park provides context for the life and times of Abraham Lincoln by preserving the home of his parents and neighbors. Thomas and Sarah Lincoln lived on this farm during Abraham’s years as Springfield-based lawyer. 

Additionally, this 86 acre, living history farm also includes two more historic homes. The Stephen Sargent Home sheds light on Lincoln’s legal practice in the Illinois frontier. The Moore home was the place where Lincoln bid his parents farewell before leaving to take his place as President of the United States.

#37 Take a World’s-Largest Treasure Hunt

No trip to the Midwest is complete without an off-the-wall, roadside landmark. So how about a town of off-the-wall landmarks? Casey, Illinois has more than two dozen oversized, everyday objects all over their town. Twelve of these items hold the distinction of being the “world’s largest” of their kind.

Casey owes its collection of giant things to Jim Bolin, a local business man who was looking for a way to give back to his home town. All but two of these giants were built by Bolin Enterprises, Inc. Take a tour of Casey, IL and see how fast you can find all of the big things in this small town.

The Ultimate Playground: Outdoor Adventures in Southern Illinois

Attention, work-hard, play-hard types: Illinois’ southern tip has your back.

With seven wilderness areas and nine state parks, plus lakes, rivers, waterfalls and even a swamp to explore, the gorgeously green area around   Shawnee National Forest   offers all the ways to unplug and reconnect through recreation.

The area’s main play spots hug the Ohio River, which forms the eastern and southern borders, and the Mississippi River, which marks the western edge. The area covers more than 400 square miles, but you can drive between the rivers in less than 90 minutes on the interior roads, stopping in small towns and rural retreats for coffee shops, restaurants and wine tastings. Or cruise the riverbanks on national drives—the 550-mile  Great River Road  through Illinois and the 188-mile  Ohio River Scenic Byway , both of which rim the Shawnee region.

Nature Thrills

Get a flying fix among the sandstone bluffs. Zip through the trees near Makanda with   Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour . Test your balance on a 180-foot suspension bridge and cruise hands-free on one of eight lines, the longest zip (1,100 feet). Shorter treks traverse five lines in about two hours. One Saturday a month in summer, fly like Batman on a full-moon tour.

For boulderers and climbers,   Jackson Falls   in Shawnee offers the largest number of climbing routes in Illinois, including 50-foot technical climbs up the sandstone bluffs. If you’re new to climbing, guides found through   Egyptian Hills Resort   in Creal Springs or   Vertical Heartland Climbing School   in Buncombe can teach you the ropes.

Paddle Pursuits

Have big fun on the bayou in the middle of the Midwest. In the   Cache River State Natural Area , J-stroke through emerald green duckweed and around 1,000-year-old cypress trees growing out of a swamp carved by glacial floodwater of the Ohio River. On your paddle of 3 to6 miles, look for the state champion 73-foot-tall bald cypress tree with a 34-foot trunk circumference. Ullin’s  Cache Bayou Outfitters  offers gear and trips.

Near Giant City State Park,   Little Grassy Lake   pampers paddlers with 31 miles of shoreline to explore. Rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboards at the marina. You can camp there, too, plus fish for bass, crappie and catfish. For more lake-based camping, boating and swimming, stop by Pounds Hollow Recreation Area in Harrisburg and   Lake Glendale Recreation Area   near Golconda.

Scenic Rides

Cruise the forest’s heart on two wheels along the   Tunnel Hill State Trail , a 45-mile path connecting Harrisburg to Karnak. Ride over 23 trestles and through a 543-foot-long tunnel. Pass through farmland in the north, forest and bluffs in the central stretch, and the Cache River at the south. Stop by   Henry Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center   to learn about the swamp. If you need a bike, check out Sandburn Junction in Vienna.

If horseback riding is on your summer to-do list, saddle up at   Giant City Stables   in Makanda for one-hour trail rides. Small kids can ride ponies with a wrangler’s assist, while anyone head-over-hooves in love can sign up for equestrian day camp.

For epic forest and river views, drive the 188-mile   Ohio River National Scenic Byway   from Cave-In-Rock State Park to Cairo. Spend a day exploring river towns and natural sights, including the 55-foot-wide limestone cave at Cave-in-Rock State Park and   Garden of the Gods . You’ll also find frontier history at Metropolis’   Fort Massac State Park , the first Illinois state park. Learn about the fort’s history (it dates to 1757) and see a replica of the 1802 structure. Extend the drive on the Great River Road in Cairo to loop up the Shawnee’s eastern section.

Adventure Trails

Four hundred miles of trails spoil hikers in the Shawnee region. You could spend several weeks in silence on the 160-mile River to River Trail connecting the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, crossing five wilderness areas and several state parks. Bring a map for your all-day hike. If you want to overnight, backcountry gear is 
a must. For shorter treks, try one of these trails:

Burden Falls

Located in the Burden Falls Wilderness near Eddyville, the 1-mile loop crosses bedrock to the falls, a series of upper and lower cascades (and one of Illinois’ largest). Explore the side trails to spot barred owls and other birds, and do some bouldering (climbing low rocks without ropes). Visit after a rain for the best waterfall views.

Garden of the Gods

It’s one of the national forest’s most-visited spots, thanks to stop-in-your-tracks scenery—100-foot limestone bluffs formed into shapes like those of Camel, Mushroom and Anvil rocks. Stroll by rock slabs and surrounding valley overlooks on the Indian Point Trail, a 2-mile loop. Find the wilderness area near Herod.

Giant City State Park

Squeeze between massive sandstone walls on the 1-mile Giant City Nature Trail at this Makanda-area park; for a real challenge, try climbing the crevices. The 12-mile Red Cedar Hiking Trail loops through the woods, crossing a stream and accessing a waterfall for explorers looking for a full day trip or overnight backpack.

Jackson Falls

From the trailhead, it’s an easy quarter-mile trek to the top of seasonal falls, dependent on rain for flow. For more of a challenge, descend into the canyon to the base of the falls. The 3.25-mile loop follows a rocky path with plenty of roots through the national forest and towering sandstone bluffs.

Little Grand Canyon

This 3.6-mile loop near Murphysboro leads trekkers through bluffs and forest, then a scramble up a 365-foot rocky creek bed for a view of the Big Muddy and Mississippi rivers. Enjoy the quiet on this lightly trafficked route.

Rim Rock Trail

The almost 1-mile loop follows the rim of a rock escarpment. Interpretative signs share the area’s history as hikers pass the remains of a 1,500-year-old stone wall. Stairs lead to Ox-Lot Cave, once a shelter used by Native Americans.

Local Bites

DISCOVER HISTORIC SMALL TOWNS AND RURAL RETREATS ON YOUR SHAWNEE TOUR

Put your mouth where the money was at   The Vault Cafe on the Square   in Marion. Set in a corner bank, you can eat in the vault. Come early for omelets and Hawaiian bread French toast. Further east in Harrisburg, the   Steam Cafe   dishes hot combos like classic sandwiches (grilled cheese and paninis) with coffee; the downtown eatery also features breakfast all day.

Sip craft espressos and cold-press coffees at   Crown Brew Coffee Company   in Carterville. The   Illinois Made   artisans brew their thing downtown in the historic Irons in the Fire building; check out local artists’ works next door.

Oh-so-close to the Ohio River in Golconda,   Diver Down   fries all-you-can-eat catfish on Friday nights. Start with to-die-for stuffed mushrooms.

Taste the best ribs in the country (per Bon Appétit) at   17th Street BBQ   in Murphysboro. You can also order pork and ribeye steak with a side of brisket-seasoned green beans and fried okra.

Epic Toasts

CELEBRATE YOUR ADVENTURE ALONG TWO WINE TRAILS OR AT A SCENIC MICROBREWERY

Alto Vineyards in Alto Pass cork-started the region’s wine cred in the 1980s. Winner of more than 500 national and international awards, Alto produces 25 varietals, including signature Chambourcin, a dry red table wine. Savor tastings on the back patio before embarking on a journey to 10 other wineries on the   Shawnee Hills Wine Trail . If you hit the Cache River, visit   Cache River Basin Vineyard and Winery   and   Wineaux's Restaurant .

Make sure to add   Scratch Brewing Company   to your itinerary. Near Ava, the farm crafts brews using ingredients (like mushrooms or flowers) grown or foraged nearby. Try a brew and a pizza on the patio—one of the most beautiful places in the world to drink a beer, per All About Beer magazine.

Sweet Stays

ENJOYING YOUR ESCAPE? CAMP OUT OVERNIGHT OR FIND A LOCAL LODGE

If roughing it doesn’t ruffle your feathers, the Shawnee region offers multiple camping spots to pitch a tent or pull in an RV. Also find cabins, vacation rentals and lodges for overnights.

At the   Timber Ridge Outpost and Cabins , stay in a log cabin dating back to 1852 or up in a tree house at this Elizabethtown complex.

Groups up to six can find upscale decor at  Havisham House , a French Victorian in Alto Pass. Families can also rent the Carriage House.

While at the Makanda park, enjoy dinner or drinks in the   Giant City Lodge , a sandstone and white oak timber structure built in the ’30s.

Compared to the other parts of the state, Southern Illinois is significantly different in terms of nature and the landscape. When it comes to things to do in Southern Illinois, you will never run out. It is a beautiful region with interesting attractions you should not miss when you visit. In this article, we listed some of the things you would not want to miss when you visit Southern Illinois along with other useful tips to make your trip more exciting.

1. TRAVEL THE PAST BY VISITING SOME HISTORIC SITES

Fort kaskaskia.

A couple of miles south of Ellis Grove, Fort Kaskaskia is located next to the river. The French constructed it in 1759 to defend themselves against British attacks. Today, all remains are lonely barriers around the perimeter, a burial ground from the late 1800s and breathtaking views. It is a nice spot for a picnic, with grills and tables openly available.

If you are into French colonial structural design, check out the Pierre Menard Home, constructed in 1802 for the person who became the first lieutenant governor of the state. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

Another site to go if you are a history buff is Cahokia Mounds, which is located about 13 kilometers northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. This is North Mexico’s biggest pre-Columbian settlement. It was occupied mainly throughout the

Mississippian period

With a lot of satellite mound centers and copious remote villages and settlements, it’s a remarkable example of a complex chiefdom society. This beautiful society is believed to have had 10,000 to 20,000 between the years 1050 and 1150. The main features at the location include the biggest prehistoric earthwork in the continent, Monks Mound, which covers more than 5 ha and stands 30 meters tall.

Lewis & Clark State Historic Site

Thos 14,000 square-foot exhibit area has 6 galleries that showcase the story and history of the Lewis and Clark excursion from its beginning to its significance for what America is today .

The Lewis and Clark State Historic Site honors Camp Dubois, the 1803-1804 winter camp of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It was at Camp Dubois where Corps of Discovery members set their trip to the Pacific Ocean.

Today, they offer kid-friendly exhibits that offer a chance for hands-on engagement. A renovation of the winter camp, Camp Dubois, is situated on the grounds close to the visitor center. The design of this place imitates 1803 U.S. Army guidelines for the military posts construction. There are interpreters on-site in the camp every day to explain more of the history.

2. DISCOVER THE WILDLIFE RESERVE

Cypress creek national wildlife refuge.

Situated in the southernmost part of Illinois, Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge covers parts of Pulaski, Johnson, Alexander, and Union Counties. This refuge was built in 1990, which meant to protect, restore, and maintain bottomland and wetland forests. 

Cypress Creek offers an excellent home for freshwater bird and other animals, along with many endangered species. The objective of this refuge is to support biodiversity and to educate the public about nature and give them the chance for recreational activities like bird watching, fishing, as well as nature photography . 

3. SEE THE HISTORIC BRIDGE

One of the unique things to do in Southern Illinois is to visit a historic bridge. Funded by tolls, The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge was built in the year 1929 as part of the famous Route 66. In the year 1967, a new bridge that carries I-270 was built over the Mississippi and shut down the old bridge. It was left abandoned for 31 years. During that period, this bridge was included in the 1981 film called “Escape from New York” which was named as the 69th Street Bridge.

This bridge also had a bad name for crimes and violence while it was unused due to rape and murder that took place here. In the year 1999, the bridge was formally reopened for the use pedestrian and bicycle riders after renovated and its security have improved. 

Today, at the length of one, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge is the longest bridge for bicycles and pedestrians in the world. The bridge extends to the Mississippi River and offers an important connection in the b-state trails system, which connects to Missouri’s St. Louis Riverfront Trail and Illinois’ MCT Confluence Trail. In the year 2006, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its rich and interesting history.

4. EXPLORE THE FOREST IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Situated in southern Illinois, the natural beauty of Shawnee National Forest is perfect for every type of outdoor activities. Settled between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the landscape of the forest features forests, rolling hills, open lands, creeks, lakes, and rugged cliffs. The mild weather of the area all year round makes it a perfect destination for traveling any season.

The Shawnee National Forest is popular for its breathtaking Garden of the Gods and is where the Rim Rock Recreational Trail located. If you are planning to hike, expect to be greeted by wonderful huge walls of rock covered with bright green moss, and trails that roam through canyons below the canopy of the forest.

Some of the must-see locations include Jackson Falls, sited close to the town of Ozark in Shawnee National Forest’s Hidden Springs Ranger District. 

5. HAVE SOME SNACK WITH A DASH OF HISTORY

If you want to have a unique approach to America’s history, then make sure to check out Ariston Café. Author Michael Wallis labeled this café as “one of the best the old road has to offer.” As soon as you set your foot here, you can easily tell why.

The owners, Demi and Nick Adam, serve exceptional food and offer excellent service with reasonable rates while continuing the tradition that Nick’s late father began in the year 1924.

Putting up a business in the pits of the Great Depression throughout the 1930s may not be the best idea as per many people, however, Pete Adam along with his partner Tom Cokinos proved otherwise when they opened the Ariston Café in 1935 in Litchfield, Illinois along Route 66.

The Ariston Café now stands out as an erratic survivor of family-run businesses that thrived along the Mother Road throughout the mid-21st century. 

6. WATCH THE BEAUTY OF THE REGION FROM ABOVE

Soaring on a 150-foot bluff, the chaotic world seems to simply go by as the eeriness and wonder of the Mississippi plain is sprawling underneath your feet. LaRue Pine Hills is possibly the best spot to make the most of the beauty of the Shawnee National Forest.

From the top of the decomposing limestone ridge, suitably called Inspiration Point, you are able to look off to the south, north, and west part of the state and see the majestic Mississippi River. Wonderful nature has formed one of the most diverse and naturally rich environments in not only Southern Illinois but as well as the Midwest. The steep limestone cliffs yield to vibrant swamplands that are copious in rare vegetation and environment. Underneath, you will find the only used roads shut down two times a year for snake migration.

7. SEARCH FOR THE GRAND FORCES OF EROSION

While the words little and grand are not commonly used together to describe something, this site proves that they can collide. The Little Grand Canyon is located along the valley of the Big Muddy River and has a huge area of sandstone that has gradually worn into the canyons that we enjoy today. Hiking the 3.6 loop trail is the best way to experience this place. This will allow you to see the two-side canyon that both direct you to the main canyon. The erosive force has formed sinkholes and curves that will leave you in awe. 

8. WANDER AROUND THE STREETS OF A GIANT NATURAL CITY

Your trip to Southern Illinois wouldn’t be complete without exploring Shawnee Hills. This is a 4,000-acre park that boasts long miles of hiking trails, which of course, includes beautiful sceneries along the way. The Giant City Nature Trail is the most popular trail in the park that guides you through the Giant City’s sandstone "streets".

On top of that, the park is home to one of the most rural and gorgeous lodges in the state. Built in the 1930s, this nature-made stone lodge is famous all over the state not only for its pleasant atmosphere as well as its home-fried chicken!

I grew up in Southern Illinois, and my wife is a hiker. I’ve been on hikes in Southern Illinois at age seven, and I’ve been on hikes in Southern Illinois at age 47.

And I’ve always told people that Southern Illinois isn’t like the rest of the state. If you’ve been to Central Illinois, you know that it’s perhaps the flattest terrain in the United States. The glaciers didn’t let a single hill remain — it’s perfectly flat as far as the eye can see. But once you get south of Interstate 70, the unofficial place where Southern Illinois begins, you will see terrain that will make you think you’re in Virginia or Montana. That’s what makes Southern Illinois the best place to hike in the state — and even, perhaps, in the Midwest.

Here are seven great hikes to experience in the area.

1. Garden Of The Gods Recreation Area Trails

We’ll start with the “Am I really in Southern Illinois?” spot. It’s easy to get confused, given that there’s a place called Garden of the Gods in Colorado as well. But yes, this is Southern Illinois, and the views are absolutely incredible.

There are many different ways to experience the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area , so this is perhaps the best spot on this list for those looking for a wide variety of experiences. If you’re a runner looking for a difficult workout, you can run a 10+ mile loop trail with significant climbs. Or if you’re wanting to take your mom or dad on a flat trail that’s less than half a mile and provides incredible views, you can do that as well. Most trails in the area can be extended, shortened, or combined to give you the length and difficulty you desire.

The centerpiece of all these trails are the rock outcroppings known as the Garden of the Gods. All of the trails run through this central spot. And the easiest, flattest trail is located there as well. The Garden of the Gods Observation Trail is an easy, flat 0.5-mile loop from the parking lot to the rock outcroppings. The other trails connect to it, so if you want to continue on to a moderate or even difficult trail that climbs up and down the hills of the recreation area, you can do that as well.

2. Cache River State Natural Area Loop Trail

Johnson county.

If the Garden of the Gods makes you feel like you’re in Montana, the Cache River State Natural Area makes you feel like you’re in Louisiana. It’s a cypress swamp located deep in Southern Illinois. This swamp area provides two great things: It’s flat, unlike most every other hike in this area, and it gives you views you won’t find anywhere else.

The area’s 7-mile loop trail crosses itself several times, so it can be shortened to 2 miles, 3 miles, or whatever length of hike you’re looking for. The highlight is walking through the swamp areas. (Don’t worry — there are bridges and elevated trails across the wet portions, so you won’t be walking down into the swamp.) You’ll see all kinds of wildlife that you won’t find elsewhere in Southern Illinois.

It’s also a great place in the spring and summer for wildflower viewing. The Cache River and the surrounding areas are unique in Illinois in that they form a boggy wetland like you would see in Louisiana or Florida. As a result, there are wildflower areas you wouldn’t normally see in Southern Illinois. Have your camera ready.

3. Salt Lick Trail

Perhaps you’ve heard the story of Valmeyer — it’s the town that moved. During the Flood of 1993, the largest flood the Mississippi River has ever seen, the entire town of Valmeyer was completely underwater for more than a month. Government agencies decided that the best solution for this town, which often dealt with flooding, was to move it to the top of the bluff, away from the floodwaters. You can still see the remnants of the old town down in the bottoms, but the new town sits up on the bluff, far away from future floods.

Up on this bluff, you will also find the Salt Lick Trail . This is an easy 2-mile loop trail that can be combined with the Johnson Trail to make a moderate 3.5-mile trail. The views are spectacular. This is one of the widest spots in the Mississippi River Valley, and it gives you a really good view of the entire area. You’ll find it hard to believe that the Mississippi River — way over there — when flooded, stretches all the way across the valley to the base of the bluff you’re standing on.

4. Panther Den Loop, Panther Den Wilderness

South of Carbondale, surrounding Crab Orchard Lake and Little Grassy Lake, you’ll find more hiking trails than you can count. There are probably two dozen trails in this 20-mile area, but one of the best is the Panther Den Loop .

Located just south of Devil’s Kitchen Lake, this trail is in an area known as the Panther Den Wilderness. Don’t worry — you’re not going to run into any actual panther dens. It’s the hidden gem trail in the area — the one that the locals all know. You’ll see wildflowers, rock outcroppings, and lots of wildlife. It’s a little difficult to find (all hidden gems are), but follow the signs off of Panther Den Road and Robinson Hill Road, and you’ll find the small parking lot that will lead you to this great little trail.

5. Inspiration Point Trail

If you’re looking for a very short trail that will still get you some exercise, consider Inspiration Point Trail near Wolf Lake. It’s a great little hike out to an overlook and back. And when I say “little,” I mean little. It’s only 0.35 miles from the parking area to the overlook (Inspiration Point), and then you retrace your steps for a total of 0.7 mile.

Perhaps a 3-mile loop isn’t your thing, but you still like to get out in nature and maybe even challenge yourself a bit. This would be the perfect trail for that. The elevation change is approximately 160 feet. You’ll walk slowly downhill out to the point, climbing down 160 feet (think 16 flights of stairs); take your photos from Inspiration Point overlooking the Mississippi River Valley; and then slowly make your way back with a steady climb of 160 feet. Good exercise, less than a mile, and a fantastic view.

6. Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Trail, Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area

Whittington.

This is the most recent Southern Illinois hike my wife and I have taken. On a trip from Nashville to Saint Louis, we stopped at Rend Lake just south of Mount Vernon. Once there, we headed to Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area and found the aptly named Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Trail. We were looking for a 5-mile hike, and this hike was 5.2 miles.

For a 5-mile trail in a hilly area, this trail was surprisingly flat. There are climbs and drops as you wander around the east side of the lake, but it’s nothing like some of the other hikes we’ve discussed. This is simply a pleasant, easy, wooded hike with a great lake view.

7. Red Cedar Trail, Giant City State Park

This is my pick for the best hike in Southern Illinois. Check out TravelAwaits ’ picks for the best hikes in all 50 states here. I saved the best for last. Or perhaps I should say it this way: If you want every hiking experience listed above — a walk to a rock outcropping where you can’t believe you’re in Illinois, a stroll through a lowland glade with wildflowers, a steady climb up out of a riverbed — then your choice should be Giant City State Park .

In fact, if you’re really adventurous, then you can experience all of these things in one day. If you were to ask me to name my favorite hike in Illinois (and perhaps in the Midwest), I would have to say the Red Cedar Trail in Giant City State Park. It’s a beast — it’s 12 miles long — but I’ve done it twice as an all-day, pack-your-lunch hike, and it was awesome both times. You’ll see everything — massive rock outcroppings, water, deep forests, small waterfalls, and more.

This is not to say that the Red Cedar Trail is the only option at Giant City State Park. There are shorter trails in the park that will take you to some of the famous rock outcroppings. And you can just do parts of the Red Cedar Trail as an out-and-back hike.

But whatever you do, make your way to the lodge at the end. It’s got some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had — perhaps because I earned it with that 12-mile hike!

What To Know Before You Go

When I hike with my wife, I’m in charge of the map. If the state park or national forest we’re in has a visitor center, I’ll stop and grab a map of all the trails in the area. If not, I can always use the AllTrails app on my phone. This app has seemingly every trail in the country. You open up the map view and simply zoom in to where you are.

And the best part is that the GPS on your smartphone will show you exactly where you are on the trail. If you hike frequently, I’m sure you’ve gotten into a situation where you’re deep in the woods, you come to a fork in the trail, and you’re not sure which way to go. With the app, I can pull out my phone, see the red line for the trail I’m on, and make sure my “dot” is following that trail.

There are both free and paid versions of the app, but the free version provides almost everything an amateur hiker would need. The paid version does allow you to download the maps and use them offline, but that’s often not necessary. It’s a great tool to have when hiking deep in forests with trails going every which way — which is something you see a lot in Southern Illinois.

SOUTHERN, ILLINOIS DAY-TO-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: starting your southern illinois adventure.

Your Southern Illinois adventure starts in the morning in historic Mt. Vernon. Fuel up at the  Farmhouse Bakery & Café  for delectable scratch-made pastries and rich caffeinated beverages. Your group sojourn commences at the  Cedarhurst Center for the Arts , a magnificent pastiche of culture and art spanning more than 80 acres. Marvel at over 70 striking works of art on your group tour through the  Goldman Kuenz Sculpture Park  and immerse in the diverse styles and media. Afterward, head to the 33,000-square-foot heritage center and explore its four galleries, interactive learning center and performance hall.

Grab lunch at  Aneil’s Restaurant , serving the most tender smoked BBQ, burgers, catfish, ribs and other Southern favorites. If BBQ isn’t your jam, share a pie at  Joe’s Pizza & Pasta  for classic Italian American cuisine.

Groups can also make a short drive to the  Centralia Area Historical Society Museum  in downtown Centralia. Two floors of a former wholesale grocery warehouse are filled with railroading, mining, oil industry, agricultural and Civil War artifacts. Groups can also travel west to Carlyle and stop at  Ten Pin Antique Mall , where thousands of items are for sale in a repurposed bowling alley that still has the old signage, bowling lanes and scoring monitors.

There’s more history to be had at the  Jefferson County Historical Village , where your group can take a self-guided or docent-led walking tour of this unique Southern Illinois attraction. Explore a true community-inspired and built showpiece based on life in the 1800s. Over several decades, generous monetary donations, gifting of historic and other buildings, land contributions, and thousands of local artifacts collected have made the village a popular Southern Illinois attraction.

Breathe in the calming aroma of lavender when your group explores the vibrant purple fields of  Lavender Falls . This family-owned U-Pick farm has everything your group needs to unwind, like essential lavender oils, sprays, soaps, honey, lavender bundles and more.

Another tasty option is  St. Nicholas Brewing Company  in Du Quoin, a brewpub housed in a former hotel dating from 1879. Menu favorites include catfish with hushpuppies and fries, gourmet mac & cheese, barbecue pork and sourdough-crust pizzas.

DAY 2: THINGS TO DO IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Venture out on a tasting tour at some of the finest local vineyards and breweries in Southern Illinois. Start in Ava at the  Scratch Brewing Company,  a farmhouse microbrewery located five miles from the pristine Shawnee National Forest. Stop in for lunch and a hand-crafted beer that will awaken your taste buds.

Travel 30 minutes southeast to Carbondale and walk off those liquid calories at the  University Museum at Southern Illinois University  (SIU). Opened in 1874, the museum represents the whole of humanity through stories, history, cultural arts and science with a focus on Southern Illinois heritage.

Just 10 minutes away at the  Kite Hill Vineyards  in the Shawnee Hills, relax with a glass of local wine and enjoy the postcard views. Plan a visit to their tasting room by appointment for a unique group activity. Located along the Ponce Wine Trail,  Monte Alegre Vineyard/Cellars  invites guests to tour the impressive wine cellar and enjoy a glass of their red or white. Sold exclusively from their vineyard, Monte Alegre wines are a true taste of the area. Both vineyards offer relaxation for something to do in Southern Illinois.

While in Carbondale, enjoy a robust dinner at  Flame , serving up char-broiled steaks, Southern-style catfish, slow-cooked prime rib and more comfort cuisine, including an extensive beer and wine menu. After dinner, head down the street for an evening show at  The Varsity Center , a performance arts venue originally home to the historic Varsity movie theater, before ending your night.

DAY 3: MORE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS ATTRACTIONS

Check into the historic  Giant City Lodge  in Makanda and enjoy quaint cabins or lodge accommodations specializing in Southern hospitality. Once your group is settled, make your way to the  Makanda Boardwalk  in the charming downtown area. The village of Makanda was incorporated in 1888 and was named after a prominent local Indian Chief. Stretch your legs and peruse the unique shops and artisanal merchandise for sale.

Those who wish to stretch their legs and explore can visit  Shawnee National Forest , which abounds with wilderness recreation areas across the state’s southern tip. A group visit to  Giant City State Park , located within  Shawnee National Forest  near Makanda, can include a hike on the one-mile Giant City Nature Trail, known for the narrow passageways threading through huge sandstone walls. Explore natural outdoor Illinois attractions on the Red Cedar Hiking Trail Twin Falls or the Giant City Nature Trail.

Enjoy a scenic drive to the eastern side of Shawnee National Forest, where the more adventures can explore the  Garden of the Gods,  the region’s most popular recreation site. Observation Trail, a quarter-mile stone path with interpretive panels describing the area’s geology, weaves through massive boulders affording spectacular overlooks of the pristine woodlands.

It’s time to relax and refuel with a glass of wine and lunch at  Blue Sky Vineyard , a few miles southeast of the park. Share a pizza, order a deli sandwich from the café and savor hand-crafted vintages surrounded by a grape paradise.

After a long day of touring Makanda, retire back at the Giant City Lodge for a low-key evening and dinner at the lodge restaurant.

DAY 4: FINAL DAY OF TRAVEL IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Wake up refreshed and grab a warm breakfast at the lodge before exploring Goreville and Marion. Both towns boast unique Southern Illinois attractions that will keep your group entertained.

Pack the water bottles before you leave Makanda and head southeast to Goreville and the magnificent  Ferne Clyffe State Park . Take the Bork Falls Waterfall Trail for spectacular photo opportunities and breathtaking scenery.

Spend a few hours enjoying the pristine natural surroundings before heading to the  Longhorn Café  in Goreville for lunch. They serve classic southern staples like okra, pork fritters, catfish and fried chicken. If you’re in the mood for something different, try another local Goreville eatery.

Another option is a visit to Metropolis, which is known as the “Home of Superman.” Pay a visit to the  Super Museum , which contains one of the world’s largest collection of memorabilia relating to the TV, movie and comic book hero. Artifacts range from Hollywood costumes and props to lunch boxes, toys and food products bearing the Superman logo. Across the square, pose with the 15-foot-tall bronze  Superman Statue  by the Massac County Courthouse.

Drive to Marion and see a live show like standup comedy, a tribute band and dance performances at the  Marion Cultural & Civic Center  (MCCC). Most acts perform at night, but there are afternoon shows to enjoy.

Depending on what time the show starts, enjoy a cup of coffee at  Crown Brew Coffee Co.,  around the corner from MCCC. Enjoy a cup of award-winning brew in a warm sophisticated café setting. Choose from select international coffees made by friendly baristas.

Take your coffee and head over to the  Mandala Gardens  and immerse in the sweetly scented flora aromas. The 7-acre gardens are an unforgettable outdoor Southern Illinois attraction boasting a unique labyrinth of winding pathways through magical garden landscapes. Explore the gardens, including rock sculptures and natural settings, at your leisure.

Giant City Nature Trail

• Location:  Giant City State Park
• Distance : 0.9 miles
• Difficulty level:  Easy
• Time needed:  30-45 minutes
• Elevation gain:  161 feet
• Highlights:  The series of rock formations along the trail are beautiful to see and fun to explore

Where to start the Giant City Nature Trail hike

Start the hike at the Giant City Nature Park Visitors Center off Giant City Road.

This was an easy enough hike for us to bring the whole family and we all really enjoyed exploring the rocks along the way.

Best waterfall hikes in southern Illinois

If you plan to go hiking in southern Illinois, make sure to add one of these waterfall hikes to your bucket list for a guaranteed memorable trek.

Pomona Natural Bridge Trail

• Location:  Shawnee National Forest in Pomona, Illinois
• Distance : 0.3 miles
• Difficulty level:  moderate –there are some steep slopes
• Time needed:  20 minutes to hike but you could easily spend an hour exploring the area.
• Elevation gain:  69 feet
• Route type:  loop
• When to go : open year-round
• Dog-friendly:  Yes but they need to be on a leash at all times.
• Highlights:  Enjoy views of the bluffs from the natural, 90-foot wide bridge.

Pomona Natural Bridge Trail is one of the best hiking trails in southern Illinois for families. This short trail winds through a beech forest where you’ll find a waterfall, views of the bluffs, a natural sandstone bridge, and a stream that the kids will love to explore.

Where to start the Pomona Natural Bridge hike

Right off Natural Bridge Road, you’ll find a parking lot and a well-marked sign indicating the entrance to Pomona Natural Bridge Trail.

This is an incredibly scenic hike and with the exception of a downhill at the beginning, the trail is quite level and great for everyone, including kids!

The trail is super well defined and easy to navigate, even if you decide to go a bit off-trail to explore the stream along the way.

For a scenic hike that is accessible to all skill levels, Pomona Natural Bridge Trail is the trail for you.

Ferne Clyffe waterfall trail

• Location:   Ferne Clyffe State Park
• Distance : 0.75 miles (1.3 miles as a loop together with the Big Rocky Hollow trail)
• Difficulty level:  Moderate
• Time needed:  45 minutes
• Elevation gain:  207 feet
• Route type:  Out and back / or loop if combined with Big Rocky Hollow trail
• When to go:  March to October for the most impressive view of the fall. Come in summer and your kids will be able to play in the pond at the bottom of the falls
• Highlights:  The beautiful waterfall

As you probably guessed from the name, Ferne Clyffe Waterfall Trail is made popular because of the gorgeous waterfall found along the trail.

While the path to getting there can be rugged, the short distance and picturesque forestry along the way make it worthwhile.

The trailhead is located at Ferne Clyffe Campground.

Highly recommended but the trail can be confusing because it isn’t well marked.

Truly beautiful waterfall and trail. Make sure to pay attention to what time of year you visit though because it is seasonal.

Deer trail loop

• Location: John N. Olin Nature Preserve near Alton, Illinois
• Distance : 2.7 miles
• Time needed:  1.5 hours
• Elevation gain:  347 feet
• When to go: April- December 
• Dog-friendly:  No Dogs
• Highlights: This loop will take you past a waterfall along a perfectly groomed trail.

Deer Trail Loop runs through a beautiful forest setting where you’ll likely spot deer turkeys in the quiet setting.

There are tons of hills along the way that are perfect for kids to run up and down.

Begin the hike at the Forest Park Nature Center where there are signs and maps for how to get started.

This is an excellent trail. It’s super quiet, well-marked, and beautiful.

This is the perfect trail for families. I loved how peaceful it was and my kids loved seeing the deer, rabbits, and beavers.

No matter the time of year, Deer Trail Loop is always an enjoyable loop and the perfect distance.

Stone Fort Nature Trail

• Location:   Giant City State Park
• Distance: 0.3 miles
• Difficulty level:  moderate
• Time needed:  30 minutes
• Elevation gain:  82 feet
• When to go:  year-round
• Dog-friendly:  Yes but on a leash
• Highlights:  The hike leads to an abandoned prehistoric fort

The Stone F ort Nature trail leads to the ruins of an old military fort that is much older than the country itself.

While it may appear to some as a pile of rocks, this fort is believed to have been built around 600-800 AD.

Along the way to this historical site, you’ll find wildflowers, wildlife, massive boulders, and plenty of trees.

Where to start the Stone Fort Nature hike

The trail starts in the parking lot of Giant City Park Road, the parking lot is shared with the Trillium trailhead.

I loved seeing the sights but I wouldn’t bring young kids on this hike because the path is really narrow with quite a few steep falls.

Very rugged but definitely worth it!

Stone Fort Nature Trail is like no other trail because of its archeological significance in addition to beautiful water and rock features.

Inspiration Point Trail

• Location:  Located within the Shawnee National Forest in Wolf Lake, Illinois
• Distance : 0.75 miles
• Difficulty level:  Moderate due to steep areas and loose rocks
• Time needed:  Up to one hour
• Elevation gain:  164 ft
• Route type:  Out and back
• When to go:  Accessible year-round
• Dog-friendly:  Yes but dogs need to remain leashed.
• Highlights:  Enjoy panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley and the Big Muddy bottomlands

Shawnee National Forest offers the best hiking in southern Illinois and Inspiration Point Trail is one of the hikes you cannot miss.

The overlook at the top of the hike earns its namesake as truly inspirational and breathtaking.

Where to start the Inspiration Point hike

There are two trailheads: the lower trailhead at McCann Springs Picnic Area, and the upper trailhead across from Clear Springs Wilderness.

Truly breathtaking views from Inspiration points, probably the best view in the state, and the hike to get there was scenic and enjoyable.

If you’re on the lookout for gorgeous overlooks and breathtaking views, put Inspiration Point hike at the top of your list.

The sights are best enjoyed at sunrise or sunset.

Trillium trail

• Distance : 2 miles
• Difficulty level:  Moderate for its rugged terrain.
• Time needed: 1 hour
• Elevation gain: 164 Feet
• Route type: Loop
• When to go: Year-round
• Dog-friendly:  Dogs are welcome
• Highlights:  Trillium trail is an ideal hike for bird watchers, wildflower enthusiasts, and nature lovers.

Trillium Trail has it all: from blooming wildflowers and unique plant species to sandstone bluffs, rocky creeks, and unique ice formations (seen in the winter).

At times the hike can be a bit uneven and rugged which makes it even more interesting.

Where to start the Trillium Trail hike

The trail is located within Giant City State Park. The trailhead is located on Giant City Park Road.

I loved the rock formations and found the trail very scenic. The best part was that it was very doable with kids.

Great hike! Halfway through there are stairs that were pretty steep, but the rest of the hike was a breeze.

Trillium Trail is a gorgeous route, but hikers must be mindful as there are steep cliffs that can be slippery when wet.

Panther Den Wilderness Quest

• Location:  Panther Den Wilderness
• Distance : 2.5 miles
• Difficulty level:  Moderate to difficult
• Time needed:  3 hours
• Elevation gain:  285 feet
• When to go:  Year-round
• Dog-friendly:  Yes but must be kept on a leash
• Highlights:  Panther Den is known for its hiking, equestrian activity, and bird watching

Panther Den is named after the den-like, rock cave located in the Panther Den Wilderness.

Along the trail, you’ll find steep terrain, huge rock formations, rolling hills, and some pretty spectacular spots for camping if you’re looking for overnight hikes in southern Illinois

Where to start the Panther Den hike

The Panther Den trailhead is located on Panthers Den Lane in Makanda, Illinois.

Even though there are lots of fallen trees and greenery, the trail is very well kept which made seeing the amazing rock formations all the more worthwhile.

Download the map before you go because the hiking trail can be confused with the horse trails!

Be mindful that the loose rocks, creek crossing, and oftentimes muddy trails can be very challenging but well worth it for seasoned hikers.

Salt Lick and Johnson Trail Loop

• Location:  Salt Lick Point Land and Water Reserve
• Distance : 2.9 miles
• Time needed:  1 hour 30 minutes
• Elevation gain:  452 feet
• When to go:  This trail is open and accessible throughout the year but if you come during the spring and summer, you will be able to see more flowers and plants throughout
• Highlights:  Distant views across the plains along with an abundance of wildflowers in spring

While hiking the challenging Salt Lick and Johnson Trail Loop , don’t forget to look for remnants of the limestone quarry that used to sit on this stretch of land.

In addition to a rich history, you’ll find towering rock formations, steep inclines, colorful wildflowers, and several overlooks with scenic views.

Where to start the Salt Lick and Johnson Trail Loop

The trailhead is easy to find, right off the Salt Lick parking lot. 

If you take the loop counterclockwise, the first half is really steep but the views from the top are absolutely amazing.

Love this hike. Once you’re past the first ¾ mile, the last section is flat and decorated with moss-covered boulders. One of my favorite hikes I’ve done.

Opt for a more challenging hike with the Salt Lick and Johnson Trail Loop. The steep climb leads to stunning overlooks and panoramic views of southern Illinois.

Pere Marquette Outer Loop

• Location : Pere Marquette State Park
• Distance : 5.9 miles
• Elevation gain:  990 Feet
• Highlights:  Beautiful trail to spot wildlife like swallowtails and star-spangled fritillary

If you’re looking for some hiking places in southern Illinois to connect with the outdoors, Pere Marquette Loop trail is a great place to hike. 

The different sections offer unique experiences, such as interesting geology, McAdams peak, tall grass fields, and plenty of river overlooks.

Where to start the Pere Marquette Loop Trail hike

Begin the hike in the northwest corner of the Visitors Center parking lot

The hike was a bit strenuous but had many lovely overlooks

While the views of the hills are breathtaking, the hike can be pretty challenging. The trail has eroded quite a bit but is still worth the visit.

This hike is a bit challenging and not as well maintained as others but the nature is bountiful and the challenging hike rewarding.

Red Cedar Trail

• Location : Giant City State Park
• Distance : 12 miles
• Time needed:  1 day
• Elevation gain:  1,263 feet
• When to go:  Late fall to spring. The trail is closed during deer shot-gun seasons
• Dog-friendly: 
• Highlights:  Enjoy forests, wildlife, bluffs, and rock formations.

Red Cedar Trail is one of the best places to hike in southern Illinois for an immersive wilderness experience. It’s the only trail at Giant City where there is a specific camping area for the trail.

Once hiking, you’re likely to spot a plethora of wildlife along the rugged, back-country route past bluffs, rolling hills, and rushing creeks.

Where to start the Red Cedar Trail hike

Begin at the trailhead which is located next to the parking area off the main Giant City Class A Campground. There are restrooms as well as signs indicating where to begin.

This trail is definitely not for beginners as it’s a pretty good workout.

Rough terrain but enjoyable.

If you’re a nature enthusiast looking for a rugged hiking experience, Red Cedar Trail is the route for you.

Unlike most of the other trails on the list, Red Cedar is not commonly walked on and not maintained, adding to the challenge of the trek.

Southern Illinois’ varied landscapes are beautifully showcased in each of these wonderful and unique trails.

There are hikes for the experienced and novice, young and old, as well as campers and dog owners.

10 Southern Illinois

Hiking trails, for every type.

Southern Illinois hiking trails are some of the best in the state. Southern Illinois is home of the state’s only National Forest so it’s safe to say that you can find plenty of hiking trails here. In this guide, I’ll take you through 10 Southern Illinois hiking trails for all different types of hikers whether you’re a beginner, requiring family hikes, or you want that rugged experience away from others. The great thing about southern Illinois hiking trails is there are way more than these 10 I am mentioning in this guide. So that means you can expect to see more guides for southern Illinois hiking trails from me in the near future.

Southern Illinois Hiking Trails for Beginners,

Seniors, and children that are easy.

Let’s take a look at some southern Illinois hiking trails that are best for folks who are new to hiking, kids, and seniors who may not be able to get around as easy.

Indian Creek Trail at Giant City State Park

Indian Creek is probably one of the most scenic but easiest southern Illinois hiking trails out there. This loop trail is less than a mile in length and there is barely any elevation. There are some interpretive signs along the way telling you the history of the Native American culture that once used this area. You might even find chert that was once used to craft tools for hunting and such. There is a lot to see on this trail and it will definitely make you fall in love with southern Illinois even more.

Heron Pond Nature Preserve

Heron Pond Nature Preserve is where Hiking with Shawn was started at and it’s a beautiful trail to hike, especially for beginners, children, and seniors. The hike is about 2-miles in length and out and back. It features quite a few interpretive signs along the way explaining the natural elements of the area. This area is a wetland and its completely natural though it looks like something out of the Louisiana Bayou. You’ll see a little bit of everything on this trail including a boardwalk over a swamp, the Cache River, and even a giant oak tree that would take a whole family to completely hug.

Garden of the Gods Observation Trail

Garden of the Gods Observation Trail is likely the most visited out of all southern Illinois hiking trails. This easy loop is about a half mile total with very little climb. There are signs everywhere that explain what you’re seeing and there are tons of rock formations. One formation, Camel Rock, has been featured on a US quarter. This is the trail I send people to when they’ve never visited the National Forest because after you see the features of this trail, you’ll fall in love with southern Illinois hiking trails and want more and more after that. Just understand that this is a popular place to expect to see quite a few people and remember to put safety first at all times.

Southern Illinois Hiking Trails for more

Experienced hikers who like moderate trails.

Let’s take a look at some of the more moderate trails in southern Illinois. These trails are easy to follow but are more moderate conditions like having creek crossings and some hills.

Rim Rock National Recreation Trail

Rim Rock National Recreation Trail is a great trail for a more moderate hiking experience without worry of getting lost. This well-used trail is moderately rugged, a loop, 1.7-miles in length, and has some hilly trail conditions during the start and finish. There are some signs along the way telling you more about the area and what it was used for long before the forest was established. There is also an access trail to Pounds Hollow beach which is a seasonal swimming beach that’s free to swim in. This trail features high bluffs, waterfalls, natural shelters, scenic creeks, and even a Native American rock wall. You’ll love this hiking trail after you’ve completed it.

Sentry Bluff Trail at Bell Smith Springs

The Sentry Bluff Trail is often described as the more wilderness-like trail at Bell Smith Springs. This 3.2-mile, moderately rugged loop hiking trail has a lot to offer. There is the very wild and scenic Bay Creek which you’ll have to cross at some point. There are waterfalls along this trail and awesome bluffs. There are unique overlooks and big cave shelters. There are even some swimming holes that are a lot more private than the main swimming area of Bell Smith. While this trail is harder, it is definitely worth experiencing if you want a more moderate hiking adventure. If it’s summer, you might want to bring a swimsuit with you.

Little Grand Canyon Trail

The Little Grand Canyon Trail is one of the best trail (if not the very best) on the west side of the Shawnee National Forest. This 3.4-mile moderately rugged loop trail offers hikers a chance to take a hike on the wild side to sum it up. You will start off hiking rolling hills and then arrive at one of the most scenic overlooks you’ll lay eyes on. Then you’ll hike down a waterfall, yes down a waterfall, to get to the canyon below with high bluffs, views of the historical Big Muddy River, and even more waterfalls. Then you’ll hike back up another waterfall, yes, another one and make your way up rolling hills back to where you parked. Little Grand Canyon is moderately rugged but a really good trail for folks who want a good workout.

Southern Illinois Hiking Trails for

True adventurers looking for hard trails.

Now let’s check out some of the hardest southern Illinois hiking trails out there. These trails are for the more experienced folks who are looking for a rugged adventure. Be sure to play it safe when hiking these trails.

Red Cedar Trail at Giant City State Park

The Red Cedar Trail is often used as a backpacking or multi-day hiking trail in southern Illinois. This 12-mile loop trail is the most rugged of the trail at Giant City State Park. There is a campground (hike in) located in the middle of the trail in case you want to do it in a few days. There is over 1,000-foot of elevation, creek crossings, huge bluffs, challenging hills, and rocky rugged trail terrains. The water sources on this trail are creeks so be sure to bring a filter or plenty of water. If you visit when the area is wet, it’ll be muddy in spots, but the waterfalls are amazing to see.

Pakentuck Waterfall Trail

The Pakentuck Waterfall Trail is located on Shawnee National Forest land that borders Camp Ondessonk and it’s one of my favorite spots to chase waterfalls. There is a short Forest Service Road that eventually turns in to unmaintained horse trails. It is a 5-mile rugged loop with creek crossings, rugged terrains, muddy trails, huge bluffs, and three large waterfalls that you don’t want to miss seeing at their best. I highly recommend going when its wet out, but it will be harder to hike. The waterfalls in southern Illinois really depend on rainfall. This might also be an ideal spot for frozen waterfall chasing in the winter but again, that will make it way harder to hike. Keep that in mind.

Trail 049 Loop

The Trail 049 Loop is among my favorite southern Illinois hiking trails for longer loop hikes. This rugged 10-mile loop trail will let you see many cool areas of the Shawnee National Forest including portions of the River to River Trail, Cove Hollow (001T), Millstone Lake, and even Jackson Falls. This loop is pretty rugged with some challenging hills, huge mud holes that you’ll have to hike around, plenty of creek crossings, horseback shared trails , and rocky terrains. You see huge bluffs, rock climbing areas, some of the best waterfalls in the area, and even some awesome erosion at Millstone Lake. There are all sorts of extra gems along the way too. This is a trail I like to do multiple times a year during every season possible.

The Hardest of the

Southern illinois hiking trails.

And this leads us to the very last of the southern Illinois hiking trails and the hardest of them all. This is the trail of all trails.

The River to River Trail (R2R)

The River to River Trail is the premier thru-hiking trail that stretches all across the southern Illinois region. This nearly 160-mile trail starts at the Ohio River and ends at the Mississippi River (or vice-versa if you wish) and has over 15,000-foot of elevation gain. It is probably the most rugged trail and is listed as Point to Point. You’ll see everything on this trail including the best waterfalls that our region has to offer, countless bluffs, countless overlooks, natural arches, rock formations, awesome southern Illinois communities and all parts of the Shawnee, quite a few state parks, and even a National Wildlife Refuge. The River to River Trail is the southern Illinois thru-hiking experience and many attempt it but only some complete it.

State Parks. Giant City State Park is a good start. The Nature Trail, Indian Creek, Devil’s Standtable (lower section). Ferne Clyffe State Park, too. Hawks Cave, Rebman Trail, Big Rocky Hollow, Lake Trail.

Southern Illinois is often missed by travelers heading straight to Chicago in the north. Illinois man who allegedly shot neighbor, a white woman with Black sons, charged with hate crime

An Illinois man was arrested and charged with a hate crime after he allegedly shot his neighbor several times in what authorities say is a racially motivated incident.

Around 5:37 p.m. Tuesday deputies were called to an area in Lockport Township for reports of shots fired. The responding deputies were told that the victim, a 45-year-old woman, had been shot by her neighbor, the Will County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Facebook.

Witnesses identified the shooter as John P. Shadbar and said he had "shot the victim outside and was walking around his property with a rifle," according to authorities. They said he allegedly fired dozens of rounds at the woman "from different outside locations."

The shooting was captured on video from security cameras in the area. The sheriff's office said they believe it was racially motivated.

Deputies provided life-saving measures to the woman and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities said she had been shot in the chest and hand and underwent surgery. She is currently recovering, the sheriff's office said.

The victim was identified by family members as Melissa Robertson. The family told NBC Chicago that they have been harassed by Shadbar since they moved in 10 years ago. Robertson is white and her sons are Black.

Mikeal Johnson, one of Robertson's sons, told the news station that during one incident Shadbar allegedly yelled slurs like "dead n-words, n-word this, n-word lover."

"[He] called me the n-word straight to my face," Johnson said. "My mom made him apologize. A few days later he comes out holding a gun in his underwear."

Other times, Shadbar would allegedly fire his gun in his yard and toss fireworks between the homes, the family said.

During Tuesday's incident, he was yelling "dead n-word" and was trying to get into the family’s backyard, Robertson’s aunt, Jeanne Beyer, told NBC Chicago. Robertson’s 8-year-old son witnessed the shooting, the family said.

Authorities said Shadbar, 70, barricaded himself inside his residence after the shooting. After speaking with him on the phone, a crisis negotiator convinced him to exit with his hands up, according to the news release.

Deputies said Shadbar made "several incriminating statements" while speaking to the crisis negotiator.

He was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and a hate crime. The sheriff's office said additional charges are likely.

The family said that they contacted authorities several times over the years about the alleged harassment, but nothing was ever done about it. NBC News reached out to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

"This did not need to happen at all. Not just our lives, but his life and his wife’s and our neighbors are all affected by it," Johnson told NBC Chicago.

Shadbar appeared in court on Thursday and was denied pretrial release.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend

Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.

An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.

The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.

“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.

“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.

In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.

If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.

Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.

The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.

“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”

A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.

Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.

“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”

The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.

A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.

The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Why is this happening?

A severe solar storm is brewing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.

As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.

Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.

When is this happening?

The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.

What’s flaring up?

The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .

The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.

The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle." 

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour. 

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

What's your chance of seeing the northern lights tonight? A look at Saturday's forecast

Illuminating the night sky with pink, green and gray colors, the northern lights made its appearance in the United Kingdom and the northern half of the United States on Friday. The magical phenomena could happen again tonight.

The show fascinated many onlookers as they took out their phones to capture the beauty of the night sky. On Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued extreme (G5) conditions across the United States. A storm of this intensity has not been seen since October 2003. The storm gained the name "Halloween Storm" and caused many power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, according to Earth.com .

Meteorologists have predicted that the northern lights can be visible on Saturday as well as Sunday. If you are going outside to see the northern lights, forecasters want to remind the public that their solar eclipse glasses can be used for viewing the phenomenon.

Here's what you need to know to prepare for the next viewing of the northern lights.

The northern lights: Danced across the US last night. It could happen again Saturday.

What is the cloud forecast Saturday night? Will clouds block the northern lights?

If you missed the aurora borealis Friday night, you might still catch a glimpse on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. But not if clouds get in the way.

The cloud forecast for Saturday night is generally good for most of America, but some of the people who missed their chance last night due to clouds may have a similar problem Saturday, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines. Areas that are likely to be cloudy include New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

“Even just a few breaks in the clouds will allow the aurora to be visible,” Kines said. “There’s always hope.”

Peak visibility time Saturday night will be between 9 p.m. and midnight, with some chance until 2 a.m., Kines said. The best views will be in dark areas away from the light pollution of cities, he said, though some reported seeing the auroras Friday night from metro areas like Milwaukee and Detroit.

Sunday night, if there is any aurora to see, those in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can rejoice, because Kines said the skies should be clearer.

Where can you see the northern lights tonight?

The Space and Weather Prediction Center  offers an experimental forecast map  that shows the aurora may be visible in a wide swath of the U.S. including Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Other states like California, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida could also see the sky light up again for an encore performance. But visibility will depend on shifting factors that include weather, pollution and cloud cover.

Below are forecast predictions for seeing the northern lights in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana on Saturday.

Rain and clouds are expected to damper expectations to see the aurora borealis around the Rochester, N.Y. area . Elsewhere in NY, the  Lower Hudson Valley could see the lights again, if weather permits. 

NWS maps predicting the intensity and location of the northern lights Saturday and Sunday show the aurora will be visible in mid to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be mostly cloudy with some rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. The NWS predicted 48% to 58% sky cover in metro Detroit from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. The western portion of both peninsulas are expected to have a lower cloud cover.

In the Milwaukee area , the evening is expected to bring mostly clear skies and overnight will have scattered clouds, said Tim Halbach, local meteorologist with the National Weather Service. 

Those living around the Cincinnati region could be treated to the northern lights Saturday night with the NWS' Wilmington, Ohio , office forecasting dry, partly cloudy conditions. Clouds shouldn't be an issue as many Ohioans reported seeing the lights Friday despite some cloud cover.

 In a telephone interview, Mike Bettwy, operations chief of the NOAA's  Space Weather Prediction Center  in Boulder, Co, said Indianapolis and surrounding areas might have a better chance of seeing the aurora today and Sunday.

They can expect clear skies tonight, Bettwy said.

"The aurora itself might be actually a little bit less active than it was last night," he told IndyStar. "I think the ability for you to see it will be better because the skies will be clearing out — at least in the Indianapolis area and that immediate vicinity."

Northern lights forecast path

If you want to get a better idea of if you will be able to see the northern lights from your state, check NOAA's aurora forecast tool , which has a 30-minute forecast window. 

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

Scientist left amazed by the aurora

The aurora seen on May 10 amazed Antonella Fruscione, an astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. She sent photos of the lights and the April eclipse to her friends in Italy. The northern lights weren't as prominent in Italy as it was in other places.

"And I sent them the picture that I took at the solar eclipse and I said, 'Can you imagine how fortunate I was this year, one month apart, I see these two incredible spectacles of the universe,'" she recalled telling them.

The phenomena seen Friday and possibly Saturday night isn't usual, she said.

"It's a very rare occurrence, especially because last night it was really visible," Fruscione said.

That's because the Earth's magnetic activity was at a nine, the highest the index goes, coupled with the Sun being at an active peak, causing eruptions. She added the colors cannot be predicted either as it depends on how the solar energetic particles interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Oxygen appears green, while nitrogen appears purple, blue or pink, she said.

"It just depends on which atoms in the atmosphere this particle interact with," Fruscione said.

She declined to predict how strong Saturday's aurora could be as it's not in her expertise, but said people make predictions all the time about space weather not just for the northern lights, but to ensure communications, space stations, astronauts and other matter in space doesn't get majorly disrupted.

Down on Earth, however, the activity is harmless to humans.

"It's completely harmless because the particles do not don't do not reach us," Fruscione said. "The reason why we see the colors is that the particle interacts with the atoms and they make these beautiful colors and that's it."

For Saturday, and any other day where chatter about the aurora borealis is high, Fruscione encouraged people to download an aurora forecasting app to their phones so they can see the colorful skies.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph,  according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.
