Video: Applying for UK Tourist Visa

To provide you with a clearer understanding of the application procedure, we recommend referring to a helpful video created by one of our fellow kababayans . The YouTube channel “LynintheUK” features a video where she shares her personal experience in applying for a tourist visa. Watching this video can offer valuable insights and tips to assist you in navigating the application process.

Understanding the Distinctions: England, Britain, and the UK

If you find yourself puzzled by the differences between England, Britain, and the UK, the website historic-uk.com provides a helpful explanation to shed some light on this commonly confused topic. Familiarizing yourself with these distinctions will enable you to seamlessly blend in with the locals during your tour.

The official name of the United Kingdom is: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It has four countries namely England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. To help you understand the concept better, think of the UK as an independent place like the USA. Meanwhile, the four countries mentioned earlier are similar to the states in the USA, like California or Florida.

The term “Great Britain” does not refer to any country, but instead it refers to the landmass where England, Scotland and Wales are located. The name came about when King James I added this distinction to his title.

Don’t get confused with the name “England” either. Remember that it is just one of the countries within the UK. England stands out as the most renowned among the other countries, primarily due to its capital, London, being situated there. Additionally, England boasts the largest land area and population among the four countries.

Must-Visit Destinations in the UK

If you are still planning where you want to go around the UK, we listed down some popular destinations for tourists.

The first is the Tower of London. It is a historic landmark located in the capital city. Although it may appear imposing, the Tower of London houses captivating treasures such as the Crown Jewels and collections from the Royal Armouries.

Next, make sure to experience the London Eye, a remarkable observation wheel offering panoramic views of the city. Its glass pods provide riders with a clear perspective of London’s stunning sights as it gracefully rotates along the banks of the Thames River.

A visit to Edinburgh Castle in Scotland should also be on your agenda. This castle is part of a vast complex that encompasses other historic structures, some dating back as far as the 12th century.

Whether you are a Potterhead or just curious about the whole tour, don’t miss out on the chance to join the Harry Potter Tours. Choose from various packages, including walking tours in London, visits to the Warner Bros. Studios, or day trips to Oxford. Due to their immense popularity, these tours tend to fill up quickly, so it’s advisable to book your spot as soon as possible.

For another captivating historical destination, consider a visit to Stonehenge in England. Marvel at the enigmatic stone circle and explore the accompanying exhibit featuring a 5,000-year-old man. Additionally, you can explore the Neolithic village, providing a glimpse into ancient life

Understanding the British Culture

This YouTube video from Learn English by Pocket Passport provides an entertaining yet informative glimpse of British culture. It offers valuable insights that will enhance your understanding of British customs and traditions.

One fascinating aspect highlighted in the video is the British penchant for queuing or standing in line. If you’re the type of person who tends to skip queues, it’s advisable to think twice before doing so in the UK.

Additionally, it’s wise to be prepared for the unpredictable British weather by carrying an umbrella during your visit. The video sheds light on the propensity for rain, making an umbrella a practical accessory to have on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Each year, thousands of people from the UK , including both citizens and residents, come to Qatar for holidays and employment opportunities. Tourists from 165 countries will need to pay new £10 fee to enter the UK

Most visitors visiting the UK from abroad will have to pay a new fee to enter the UK from 2025. The news comes after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced a scheme which requires non-visa travellers to the UK to pay £10 will be expanded to most countries around the world.

The electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system , which was previously introduced by the former Conservative government in November 2023, is only required for Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan nationals visiting the UK. But from January 8, 2025, all other nationals, except for Europeans, will be required to have an ETA to enter the country, according to MirrorOnline . This means a total of 165 out 193 countries in the world will have to pay the fee.

The programme will be extended to European nationals in March 2025, becoming a travel requirement for them from April 2, 2025. In a written statement to the House of Commons, the Home Secretary said: “Once fully rolled out, the ETA scheme will close the current gap in advance permissions and mean that for the first time, we will have a comprehensive understanding of those travelling to the UK.”

ETAs are digitally linked to a traveller’s passport and can be applied for via the Gov.uk website. They were introduced as a way to ensure “more robust security checks” which are carried out before people travel to the UK to help prevent “abuse” of the country’s immigration system.

With an ETA, foreign nationals will be able to come to the UK for up to six months for tourism , visiting family and friends, business or short-term study; coming to the UK for up to three months on the Creative Worker visa concession; coming to the UK for a permitted paid engagement; or transiting through the UK – including if you’re not going through UK border control.

"US visa, vintage map and passport background"

As well as the expansion of the ETA programme, the Home Secretary announced that all visitors from Jordan will be required to have a visa due to breaches of visitor rules, so will no longer be able to apply for an ETA. A four-week "transition period" will be implemented for travellers who already hold an ETA and have confirmed travel bookings.

Ms Cooper explained: “We are taking this action due to an increase in the number of Jordanian nationals travelling to the UK for purposes other than what is permitted under visitor rules since the visa requirement was lifted in February 2024. This has included a significant and sustained increase in asylum claims, and high rates of refusals at the border due to people travelling without the intention of visiting for a permitted purpose.”

UK Mandates ETA Travel Permit From Next Year; Here's What You Need To Know

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) United Kingdom

The British government recently announced an overhaul in non-visa entry requirements for visitors from 2025. The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) in the United States . The Home Office said in a statement that, “Everyone wishing to travel to the UK—except British and Irish citizens—will need permission to travel in advance of coming here. This can be either through an ETA or an eVisa.”

Here’s what you need to know about it.

What Is The ETA About?

The ETA is a travel permit that is digitally linked to the traveller's passport and is for people entering or transiting through the United Kingdom without a visa or legal residence rights

All visitors who do not require a visa to travel to Britain will need an ETA from April 2, 2025. This is a travel permit digitally linked to the traveller's passport and is for people entering or transiting through the United Kingdom without a visa or legal residence rights.

It costs GBP 10 (INR 110) and permits multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years or until the holder's passport expires, whichever is sooner. Eligibility is based on nationality and suitable travellers can apply using the “UK ETA” app.

Irish passport holders do not need an ETA

Previously, most visitors could arrive at a British airport with their passports and enter the country without a visa. But that began to change in November 2023 when the then-Conservative government introduced the ETA, starting with Qatari nationals.

The scheme was extended earlier this year and currently includes citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman , Saudi Arabia and the UAE . Children and babies from these countries need an ETA too. All nationalities except for Europeans can apply for an ETA from November 27, 2024. They will need one travel to Britain from January 8 next year.

Eligible travellers will need an ETA even if they are just using the UK to connect to an onward flight abroad

The scheme will then extend to eligible Europeans, who will require an ETA from April 2, 2025. They will be able to apply from March 5. Eligible travellers will need one even if they are just using the UK to connect to an onward flight abroad.

British and Irish passport holders and those with passports for a British overseas territory do not need an ETA. Travellers with a visa also do not require one, nor do people with permission to live, work or study in the UK, including people settled under the EU Settlement Scheme agreed as part of Britain's exit from the European Union in January 2020.

What Is Allowed Under An ETA

People with permission to live, work or study in the UK, including people settled under the EU Settlement Scheme, do not need an ETA

Travellers can get an ETA if they are coming to the UK for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, for business, or for short-term study. They cannot get married, claim benefits, live in the country by making frequent visits or take up work as a self-employed person.

The Home Office says ETAs are “in line with the approach many other countries have taken to border security, including the US and Australia .” It also mirrors the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for visa-exempt nationals travelling to 30 European countries, including France and Germany, that the European Commission expects to be operational from early next year. According to the Home Office, the ETA will ensure “more robust security checks are carried out before people begin their journey to the UK,” to help prevent "abuse of our immigration system.”

The transit hotel is recommended if you want to spend more than 24 hours in Qatar.

Travelers can not remain in the transit area for more than 24 hours between flights, regardless of whether you are using the transit hotel within the airport.

Indian citizens will not be required to have electronic travel authorisation (eta) to visit the uk as it only applies to non-european visa-exempt nationals from kuwait, qatar, bahrain, oman, saudi arabia, and the uae..

The Keir Starmer-led UK government recently unveiled its plans to overhaul the non-visa entry requirements for visitors from 2025.

In a major step towards digitising the UK border and immigration system, the UK government has set out new implementation dates for the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) scheme. The latest change is expected to affect millions of visitors once the scheme rolls out in phases.

What the UK government said?

The UK's Interior Ministry stated that visitors, who do not require a visa to travel to Britain, will be required to have an ETA from April 2, 2025.

"Everyone wishing to travel to the UK – except British and Irish citizens – will need permission to travel in advance of coming here. This can be either through an ETA or an eVisa," read the statement from the Home Office.

What does ETA mean?

ETA is a permit that is digitally linked to the traveller's passport. It is for those people, who are entering or transiting the UK, without any visa or legal residence rights, AFP reported.

Costing £10 (or $13), an ETA will permit multiple journeys to the UK, allowing stays for up to six months at a time over a two-year period or until the passport of a person expires — whichever is sooner.

The eligibility for the same depends on the nationality, while suitable travellers can apply for it with the help of the UK ETA app.

Who needs ETA?

Earlier, most of the visitors having valid passports could arrive at a British airport and enter the country without a visa. However, the policy started changing in November last year when the then government introduced ETA, starting with Qatari nationals.

This year, the scheme was further extended and at present includes people from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and the UAE.

Who are affected?

UK Interior Minister Yvette Cooper has said that all nationalities, except for Europeans, will be able to apply for an ETA starting from November 27 onwards. These people will need one trip to the UK from January 8 next year.

Later, the scheme will be extended to eligible Europeans as well. They will be required to have an ETA from April 2, 2025, while the application process for them will be from March 5.

As per reports, the eligible travellers will need an ETA even if they are just arriving in the UK to connect to an onward flight abroad.

Who doesn't need one?

British and Irish passport holders as well as people with passports for a British overseas territory will not be required to have an ETA.

Also, travellers visiting the UK with a visa do not need to acquire an ETA as well as people with permission to live, work or study in the country. This includes people who are settled under the EU Settlement Scheme.

ETA restrictions

People who get an ETA will be able to visit the UK for up to six months for tourism, meeting friends and family members, business or for a short-term study.

However, it must be noted that these people cannot get married, reside in the UK through frequent visits, claim benefits or take up work as a self-employed person.

According to the UK's Home Office, ETAs are "in line with the approach many other countries, including the US and Australia.”

Indian citizens will not be required to have ETA to visit the UK as it only applies to non-European visa-exempt nationals from Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Before travelling to the UK, Indians have to follow the existing visa process.

Breaking news, travelers will need ‘permission,’ pay a fee to visit uk as part of new digitized system.

The British government has rolled out a new requirement for travelers hoping to visit the country.

An “Electronic Travel Authorization” (ETA) has been implemented that digitizes tourists’ requests to visit the country while paying a fee of about $13.

“Everyone wishing to travel to the UK – except British and Irish citizens – will need permission to travel in advance of coming here,” says the United Kingdom government’s site.

The ETAs are linked to a traveler’s passport in an effort to smooth security checks and “prevent abuse” of the immigration system.

There were 38 million visits to the UK during 2023, an increase of 6.7 million visits compared with 2022, according to the UK Office for National Statistics.

An online form will be made available asking for valid passport information, travel details, an email address and a credit or debit card, along with “suitability questions.”

The ETA applies to anyone visiting for up to six months for tourism, to see family and friends, for business or for short-term study.

Tourists walking past the Elizabeth Tower, also known as Big Ben, in London, Britain on June 7, 2024.

“The worldwide expansion of the ETA demonstrates our commitment to enhance security through new technology and embedding a modern immigration system,” the minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra, said in a press release.

“[Digitization] enables a smooth experience for the millions of people who pass through the border every year, including the visitors we warmly welcome to the UK who are predicted to contribute over £32 billion to our tourism economy this year,” added Malhotra.

The system will open up to all other nationalities, except Europeans, this November and will be required for entry beginning in April 2025.

The United Kingdom plans to fully digitize its borders by 2025.

Travel to Qatar From the UK - COVID & Visa Requirements

Qatar attracts more and more tourists from all over the planet with its combination of modernity and Arabic tradition. But this year, the country gets even more attention from Western interests since it will host one of the biggest sporting events in the world: the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Specifically for citizens from the United Kingdom, where football is one of the most popular sports, it is a special time to visit this small state.

However, before you go, it’s important to check all the requirements for entry to Qatar. From COVID-19 regulations to visas for Qatar , we got you covered. But rest assured, British travelers will not have many issues visiting Qatar for the World Cup or simply for a holiday.

Fill me in

Where is Qatar?

For many UK passport holders, traveling to Qatar is a unique experience. In part, that is due to Qatar's location halfway around the world. Qatar is the smallest country hosting the World Cup since its foundation. Located on the west side of the Persian Gulf, it is connected to Saudi Arabia by land. There are just under three million people living in Qatar, mostly in or around Doha, the capital .

All you need to know about traveling to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 1st, 2022 until January 23rd, 2023 . It’s the first time that a country in the Middle East hosts the sporting event and a great opportunity for UK citizens who love football, to travel to this destination.

Hamad International Airport in Doha is the main way to enter the country. The matches will take place in Doha, Al Wakrah, and Al Khor. All cities are relatively close to each other, with no distance of more than 60km. You can also consider renting a car with an international driving permit, to visit the stadiums.

Since the event is coming up soon, it is recommended to book your accommodation as soon as possible, as many hotels and guesthouses are filling up quickly. If you can’t find a place to stay in Doha, it may be easier to find accommodation in Al Wakrah or Al Khor.

Now that you've got your tickets, learn more about the entry requirements for Qatar as a UK citizen!

Qatar entry requirements for UK nationals

For those who will visit Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup , there are some special requirements, such as applying for the Hayya Pass . The event is an excellent opportunity to see the most interesting cities in the country to watch different matches. It is easy to travel from one city to another in Qatar, since the territory is small.

Qatar Ehteraz pre-entry registration

Many countries around the world have specific pre-travel registration systems in place for arriving and departing passengers in order to protect public health and limit the spread of COVID-19, including Qatar. The Ehteraz pre-registration is a declaration on the public health website of Qatar, that helps the government monitor health risks in the country.

It is not mandatory anymore for Hayya cardholders to download the Ehteraz app, but it is still recommended as it gives the most up-to-date info about the Coronavirus in Qatar.

How to obtain the Hayya Card for Qatar as a UK national

One of the local authorities' requirements during this time is to apply for a Hayya Card on the specific Qatar government website. This is a personalized document required not just for every single person attending FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 matches, but also for any tourist visiting the country during this period. The card will permit Qatar entry, as well as stadium access and free public transportation (underground and bus).

Visa requirements for Qatar for UK citizens

UK citizens are eligible for a Qatar visa on arrival . This Qatar visa is valid for 30 days , but if you need a 30 day-extension is possible. You receive it upon arrival at Doha’s airport, with no need to apply for a visa in advance at the Qatar embassy in the UK.

The requirements for a visa waiver are a passport (the passport validity needs to be at least six months with two blank visa pages), airline online booking form, and proof of funds to cover the duration of stay. In any case, it’s always a good idea to confirm with the airline that boarding will be permitted under these conditions.

COVID-19 regulations in Qatar

As a UK citizen, entering Qatar under COVID-19 isn't a problem. Having been removed from the red list, citizens from the UK have fewer restrictions.

The United Kingdom is currently classified as a green country by Qatar, which means British travelers will have to follow standard health measures. You are not required to do a PCR test or show a vaccination certificate to travel to Qatar. There are no quarantine requirements.
