Whitney Houston hologram to embark on world tour

The late singer’s sister says that Houston’s hologram tour is ‘a great opportunity for her fans to see a reinvention of one the most celebrated female artists in history’

A hologram of the late Whitney Houston will take to the stage next year, as Hologram USA and Houston’s estate announce that fans will be able to watch the singer’s greatest hits during a new world tour.

The singer’s sister-in-law and president of her estate, Pat Houston, said in a statement that the hologram is “a great opportunity for her fans to see a reinvention of one the most celebrated female artists in history and to continue a legacy of performances that will not be forgotten in years to come.”

The show will reportedly open next year in the US before it tours around the world.

For those unable to make the gigs themselves, the shows will stream live on , a free online and live TV app founded by Alki David, who is also the CEO of Hologram USA.

“The opportunity to help share her spectacular gifts with the world again is exactly what I hoped for when I built the hologram business,” said David.

“We’ve got technology that’s causing a seismic shift in the entertainment industry, and a wonderful partnership with Pat Houston and the estate – I’m confident we’ll create the ultimate celebration of Whitney’s amazing artistry.”

Whitney Houston died on 11 February 2012, aged 48, after drowning in a bath at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Her death has been ruled as accidental and coroner’s officials cited heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors.

Houston’s world tour is the latest addition to the company responsible for posthumous Tupac and Liberace performances, who last week confirmed that Billie Holiday would be immortalised as a hologram.

“For the first time ever and only in New York City at the Apollo, the magic of holographic technology will transport you to the concert of your dreams as Lady Day takes the stage again,” read a statement posted on the theatre’s website .

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Whitney Houston is about to appear on the concert stage again.

Eight years after her death, a holographic Houston will embark on a European tour that starts in England on Feb. 25 and runs through early April, with U.S. dates expected to follow.

“Now is just the right time,” said Pat Houston, the singer’s sister-in-law, former manager and the executor of her estate, which is producing the show in collaboration with BASE Hologram. “In the spirit of Whitney, I know we’re doing all the right things right now.”

Last week, a few dozen members of the media were given a dress-rehearsal preview in Burbank, California of most of “An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour,” which features a Houston projected onto a nearly invisible scrim on a stage with real dancers and a live backing band.

The concert set includes most of her biggest hits — “How Will I Know,” “Saving All My Love For You,” “I Will Always Love You,” along with some unexpected rarities, including a cover of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” that Houston first recorded three decades ago.

The show, which was first conceived five years ago, used a body double along with hundreds of hours of Houston performances and extensive CGI synthesizing.

“We created the hologram the same way they did Carrie Fisher in the ‘Star Wars’ movie ‘Rogue One,’” said Marty Tudor, CEO of BASE Hologram, which has previously revived performing versions of dead singers including Roy Orbison and Maria Callas. “It’s lengthy, it’s tedious, it’s a big, complicated process, but I think it worked.”

The ambitious performance is the modest brainchild of Whitney Houston herself, in at least one respect.

While on her final European tour, she had an “unplugged” section of her show, with a stripped down band and minimal fanfare. Houston liked that so much that shortly before her death at age 48 on the eve of the 2012 Grammy Awards, she expressed a desire to one day do an entire tour that way.

That concept became the model for the hologram concert.

“This is something that she wanted to do,” Pat Houston said after the media preview of the show. “I get very emotional watching this, because it is so, so close to what she wanted. The only thing missing is her, physically.”

On first appearance it’s clear how far holographic technology has come since previous iterations like Tupac’s holographic stint with Snoop Dogg at Coachella in 2012, with little of the flickering unreality audiences expect. Houston’s appearance in a gold gown looks magically realistic.

The limits are more apparent as the concert goes on, with the projection beam visible and Houston’s movements minimal, but those shortcomings are unlikely to bother the hardcore fans the tour is likely to draw.

Houston was never one for elaborate choreography or flashy moves anyway, and her small gestures — a quivering jaw on long-held notes, fluttering fingers for vocal flourishes, are all captured here.

“Whitney didn’t dance a lot, but when she did do her little moves, they were so perfectly Whitney,” said Fatima Robinson, who choreographed the show. “We did lots of studying her behavior in her videos. We would study her movements, and find the best moments in some of the live videos that just really embody her.”

The show still features plenty of dancing, via four backup dancers and two moving backup singers, all of whom occasionally interact with the hologram.

But Houston mostly preferred to let her voice do the work, and that part of the show works seamlessly, through a blend of studio takes and live performances. Close listeners may think they’re hearing the album version of a hit before it swerves into seemingly spontaneous moments that give it a live feeling.

The sound crew also found moments of between-song patter from Houston that were eternal enough to use for the new show.

“May God bless you and keep you, and let us pray for peace, and pray for the answer,” she says toward the end of the set.

The production may be most effective when it embraces its holographic possibilities — including having Houston swarmed in a shimmering shower of golden sparks during the climactic performance of “I Will Always Love You.”

Dressing the Houston hologram provided its own set of problems and possibilities.

“The first thing is, you can’t do black,” Timothy Snell, who oversaw the wardrobe for the show, said with a mock gasp. “And black and sparkles are your first go-to. But Whitney also loved color.”

Along with the gold gown, her outfits include a shimmering orange jumpsuit and a floor-length pink flowered coat.

“She liked to look sophisticated and timeless,” Snell said. “And those timeless looks really show up here.”

Christina Aguilera Signs With 5020 Records, Ending 26 Years With RCA

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - DECEMBER 30: Christina Aguilera performs at her opening night show at Voltaire at the Venetian Resort Las Vegas on December 30, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Denise Truscello/Getty Images for Voltaire)

Christina Aguilera has officially signed to 5020 Records , leaving her longtime label RCA Records of 26 years, Variety can confirm.

Fans have been speculating over the past few months that the powerhouse singer had parted ways with RCA, the label that she’s called home for the entirety of her career, after 5020’s logo appeared on her official website. A representative from Sony Music confirmed that she is now under 5020, a new Latin label based out of Miami that touts a roster featuring Nathy Peluso and Kenia Os.

Popular on Variety

Aguilera’s management, indie publicity firm and RCA did not respond to requests for comment.

The 43-year-old was initially signed to RCA after Ron Fair, then senior vice president at the label, listened to her demo tape of Whitney Houston’s “Run to You” in 1997. At the time, RCA reportedly spent $1 million on writers, producers and voice lessons to develop her into the singer she would inevitably become.

Her eponymous debut arrived in 1999, thrusting her into the spotlight on the back of the chart-topping singles “Genie in a Bottle,” “What a Girl Wants” and “Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You).” “ Christina Aguilera ” bowed atop the Billboard 200, and set the stage for the Spanish-language follow-up “Mi Reflejo” the following year.

Throughout her decades-long career, Aguilera has released eight studio albums under RCA, most recently with 2018’s “Liberation.” In 2022, she put out a pair of Spanish-language EPs — “La Fuerza” and “La Tormenta” — in the lead-up to the full-length Spanish album “Aguilera” that dropped in September of that year. All three of those projects released via Sony Latin. “Aguilera” and its songs received eight Latin Grammy nominations, as well as two Grammy nominations including best Latin pop album.

Rolling Stones Kick-Start ‘Hackney Diamonds’ Tour With Thrilling Houston Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome , and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.

The first step was Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday night. After a strong opening set by Gary Clark Jr. that centered around his new LP, JPEG Raw , the band took the stage to the familiar opening notes of “Start Me Up.” This is the first time Mick Jagger has faced a stadium crowd since his 80th birthday last year, but his voice and body seem like they stopped aging sometime around Steel Wheels . It’s almost impossible to fully believe until you see it in person. (“People say Joe Biden is too old to be president,” an elderly woman behind me said early in the night. “They need to look at Mick!”)

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

He wasn’t kidding. The 1965 Aftermath track wasn’t played live once until their 2022 European tour, and this was the first time it crossed the Atlantic. But it’s not something you hear much on classic rock radio, and the audience reaction was pretty muted at first. “I don’t think you really knew it,” Jagger said at the end. “But you got to know it as it went along.”

The Hackney Diamonds portion of the evening began at this point with leadoff single “Angry,” which popped onstage much like it did during their surprise album release show at the New York club Racket last year. “Beast of Burden” won the fan vote for the night, and it provided veteran backup Stones singer Bernard Fowler with a much-deserved spotlight moment. “You’ve got one more vote in November,” Jagger said. “Don’t forget to vote then too. What to play now? Something old … something new.”

At the midway point of every Rolling Stones concert in recent memory, Jagger introduces the band one by one before heading offstage so Keith Richards can sing a couple of songs. For some reason, perhaps to squeeze more new songs into the set without cutting any of the standards, Richards was limited to just a single tune. He made it count by singing 1981’s “Little T & A” for the first time since 2016, though it was disappointing he didn’t get a chance to break out “Tell Me Straight” from Hackney Diamonds . It feels inevitable that’ll happen before this tour ends.

Jagger returned for “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Gimme Shelter,” which gave new background singer Chanel Haynes a chance to emerge from the wings and show off her stunning pipes. She first entered Stones World in 2022 when Sasha Allen, their previous background singer, couldn’t make a Milan show. Haynes was playing the lead role in the West End musical Tina at the time, and she parachuted in at the last second to save the show. This frustrated the producers of Tina , who fired her for handing the show off to her understudy that night when she wasn’t ill, but it impressed the Stones enough to hire her for this tour.

The main set wrapped up with “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Paint It Black,” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” These are songs they’ve done hundreds and hundreds of times for good reason. The hardcores may yearn for deeper cuts like “Memory Motel” or “Moonlight Mile,” but Jagger knows they’d cause many people to sit down and start scrolling through Instagram. And when you have a song like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in your repertoire, you simply have to play it every time you do a gig.

“Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” one of the finest songs on Hackney Diamonds , kicked off the brief encore set. If it wasn’t challenging enough to channel Merry Clayton a few songs back, Haynes had to now deliver Lady Gaga’s soaring vocal parts from the original recording. Unsurprisingly, she crushed it. For a moment, it really felt like witnessing a scene from some alternate-universe version of A Star Is Born.

The night closed out with a joyous “Satisfaction,” meaning they played just three songs from Hackney Diamonds. That’s typical for a tour in support of a latter-day Rolling Stones album, but this one really deserved more. They dropped “Midnight Rambler,” one of the Richards songs, and the acoustic set to make room for the three new ones in the show, but it be worth further restructuring to squeeze in “Whole Wide World,” “Bite My Head Off,” and “Tell Me Straight.” These are stellar songs that deserve a spot in the set, even if it means tossing aside “Paint It Black” or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” sometimes.
