San Diego County Wineries Are the Star on our Winery Train Tour

On this tour, we pop the cork on one of San Diego’s best-kept secrets…the gorgeous urban wineries nestled in the villages that hug the California coastline. As a visitor to San Diego, you probably wouldn’t know about these hidden gems unless you had a special map and an experienced guide to show you around the nooks and crannies of San Diego’s neighborhoods.

San Diego’s urban wineries typically don’t have grapevines growing on site, but the wine is produced there with grapes that are brought in from vineyards around the county and state from farms that focus on growing grapes and not necessarily winemaking. In this way, our urban winery winemakers can choose their favorite grapes to experiment with new and interesting varietals… as well as produce excellent traditional wines.

Some of our favorite experiences on this tour include:

  • Tasting an award winning Cab Franc from an urban winery that has produced dozens of winners in a surfer’s paradise on the San Diego coast.
  • Sampling a spicy habanero white wine from a local winery that hand crafts its wines in small batches, using grapes sourced from local vineyards and renowned viticulture regions throughout California. If a habanero white wine sounds weird to you… just wait until you taste it. You’ll never look at peppers the same way again…it’s absolutely delicious! (And we’re wine snobs, you can trust us.)
  • Meeting the wine makers at a quaint small village winery that have dedicated their life to making the perfect California red . They often come out into the tasting room to meet our guests and talk about their wines and winemaking process.

Of Course There’s Food, Too!

What’s a delicious taste of wine without an exquisite taste of food to pair perfectly with it?  On this tour, we stop at one of our favorite San Diego bistros to enjoy a wine tasting and a light Italian lunch. The wines served during lunch are meant to be savored with the delicious food that the chef prepares for us. You’ll also enjoy a cheese or charcuterie board and chocolate.. you’ll feel totally spoiled, believe us.

Pro tip! Ask your tour guide to recommend a great dinner spot to visit after the tour finishes. Our tour guides know all the nooks and crannies of San Diego, and can make recommendations based on your preferences.

Our Wonderful Guests Have Made This a World-Famous Tour

Imagine our delight when The Travel Channel rated this Winery Train Tour the BEST winery train tour in the world!? It’s because of the thousands of 5-star reviews from our guests. Here are a few of our favorites:

Shani said, “The train tour was awesome! Great people (Shira and Paul – our guides – and our fellow tourists) made the experience even more memorable. I rarely drink, even wine, and wasn’t sure what to expect from this tour, but I had a great time. The wineries and wines themselves were very good, especially for a relative “newbie” like myself. Some wineries were crowded, making it hard to hear our guides, but I didn’t find that to be a big problem (they were public establishments, after all).

I also enjoyed using public transportation to get around the city – the MTS trolley and Coaster train were clean and pleasant to ride. I also enjoyed the opportunity to walk the city a bit and ask our guides questions.

Finally, we had an excellent light lunch in the middle of the tour at a restaurant in Old Town. The food was great (yay for a vegan option), and energized us for the rest of the tour. Speaking of Old Town, I appreciated Paul’s recommendation on other restaurants to try in the area. Definitely recommend that area for great food!

Overall, I highly recommend this tour. It was such a fun, laid back experience, and a great way to see more of San Diego.”

Chelle said, “Absolutely not to be missed!! Marti was our guide and took us through a fun, entertaining and educational day with great wine and food and terrific company. This tour was the highlight of our San Diego visit!”

Karen reviewed us on our Facebook page , “My husband and in laws did the wine tour with Marti, it was excellent. She was very personable, knowledgeable and fun to be around. All the places we visited were very welcoming, good selections of wine, beer, Fresco for lunch was wonderful and Carruth did a great charcuterie board. Would definitely recommend this experience.”

[FAQ Video transcript: “The differences between the Chauffeured Winery Tour and the Winery Train Tour are primarily the mode of transportation and where we go. On the Chauffeured Winery Tour , we are going to be taking you to wineries with vineyards. On the Winery Train Tour, we’ll be taking you to urban wineries. Those are fully operational wineries where they make the wines, but not the vineyards where they grow the grapes. On the Chauffeured Winery Tour , we’ll be providing door-to-door transportation, so that means we’ll pick you up from your hotel or home. On the Winery Train Tour, you’ll conveniently go to your nearest train station. The Winery Train Tour is a little more active than the Chauffeured Winery Tour , you’re going to have guided historic walks on that tour, so it’s a great tour for those who like to get out and walk. On the Chauffeured Tour , there will be beautiful, gentle strolls in the vineyards if you so choose. So there you go! There are the differences between the Chauffeured Winery Tour and the Winery Train Tour.”]

Wine Country

Discover the region's great wine, fantastic food and beautiful setting, san diego wine culture uncorked.

Today, there are more than 115 dynamic wineries in San Diego County and the local industry is booming. But truth be told, there seems to be one big common misconception about San Diego's wine industry: many people think Temecula is part of San Diego County, but that's not true. No offense to our fellow winemaking friends in Riverside County, but we are not one and the same!

Once you start to explore the San Diego region, you'll discover passionate winemakers with interesting pedigrees and life experiences growing a wide selection of varietals (more than 60 distinct vinifera varietals). That incredible variety is due mostly to the exceptionally varied topography of the county. San Diego actually has more distinct microclimates than any other single county in the USA; it has grapes growing on its coastline and canyons; its mesas and mountains; even in its desert and dry washes. It has grapes growing at sea level and at every level up to 4,200 feet (which is one of the highest vineyards in the state).

San Diego's Mediterranean climate—typified nearly all year long by hot days, cool nights and ocean breezes—plays a large part in making San Diego so suitable for grape growing. France's Rhone varietals (Syrah, Petite Sirah, Marsanne, Roussanne) as well as Southern Italian varieties (Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Barbera) do particularly well here.

San Diego is home to two recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs); San Pasqual Valley, which was recognized in 1981, is one of the oldest AVA designations in the nation. [Did you know that the first wine grapes in California were planted in San Diego?] The second AVA, Ramona Valley, was established in 2006 and is now home to the densest population of San Diego’s wineries in the county.

San Diego wines continue to gain recognition around the world for their quality, concentration and rich aromas. Wine lovers have come to appreciate our floral Viogniers, our sassy Chardonnays, our dry rosés and our grassy Sauvignon Blancs. Red lovers adore our chunky Syrahs, our big-fruited Petit Sirahs and our softer, rounder medium-bodied Sangioveses and Montepulcianos.

In San Diego County, there are no busloads of tourists, wine trains or impersonal mega-winery experiences. Here, you'll discover actual winemakers and friendly folk at intimate boutique wineries that have—more often than not—been built by the winemakers themselves.

In San Diego, you can stroll through 70-year old Zinfandel vines growing on a mountain side at 3,500 feet, hitch up your horse and sip a Spanish Albariño at a charming hacienda property, enjoy live music, art and Ruby Cabernet on a Sunday afternoon, or sit back on a sunny, dog-friendly patio and taste a robust Petite Sirah.

From the mountain vineyards of Warner Springs to the pastoral countryside of Ramona; from the majestic hills of Escondido to the urban wineries of downtown and the coast, San Diego offers an authentic, unique and personal experience that’s sure to thrill and inspire any wine lover.

14 Best Wineries for a Day Trip – San Diego

For some of the best family-owned wineries outside of Napa, you should head to Southern California. Stay in San Diego and plan some local activities around your day trip (or trips) to nearby wineries.

Whether you prefer an urban winery, want to tour an organic farm, or hope to find some great wine in a boutique winery, the San Diego area is home to plenty of local vineyards, tasting rooms, and other options for wine lovers of all sorts. You can easily take a trip from San Diego and enjoy the rolling hills and beautiful landscapes on your way.

Winery San Diego 2

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you decide to choose an urban winery in San Diego or go explore a family-owned vineyard in Mexico. As long as you get to taste wines, that’s all that matters, really! So, let us go through some of the best wine tastings in and around San Diego so that you can spend less time researching and more time tasting.

Best Wine Tastings in San Diego

Just because you can find wine further out of San Diego doesn’t mean you have to… there is plenty of great wine right here! If road-tripping isn’t your ideal addition to a wine-tasting day, then stay right in San Diego by visiting 3 local wineries that we love.

Here are our top wineries in San Diego proper:

Blue door urban winery – clairemont.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Blue Door Winery (@bluedoorwinery)

With a location in San Diego and in Julian, make sure to put the location on Morena Blvd. in your directions…unless you want a road trip out to Julian, which could be fun if not more time-consuming. Both locations focus primarily on red wines with a similar atmosphere overall, though the Julian location does happen to have a dog-friendly tasting room, if that's something you'd like.

The winery is a full production spot, meaning that you will likely get to see some part of the winemaking process being completed by the staff at Blue Door Urban Winery. They do it all, from harvesting to processing and bottling, which makes this a unique urban experience for everyone, but especially for those who are exceptionally interested in wine.

Their wine club gives you discounts, free tastings, and access to some members-only events. This is a super fun option if you live in the area, but it should be noted that they only ship within the state of California.

Burtech Family Vineyard

The Burtech family started with the goal of creating something special to share with those they love. After planting roughly 3,000 vines at their 11-acre horse farm estate in Encinitas, CA, Dominic Burtech knew it was just the beginning.

The Burtech family recently opened a tasting room in Vista, CA, complete with a modern construction finish, indoor and outdoor lounge seating, and a crushing facility. Stop by for a curated tasting flight or to enjoy a Burtech Family Vineyard bottle with friends and family.

Koi Zen Cellars – Carmel Valley Ranch

This award-winning winery is open Wednesday through Sunday and has both indoor and outdoor seating available.

You can explore the wine cellars, learn about the ins and outs of making wine, and drink plenty of their delicious wines, produced on Carmel Mountain Ranch.

Koi Zen Cellars was ranked #1 of the top 25 wineries in San Diego County by YELP, as well, making this a rather popular and exciting spot to visit.

They focus not only on making amazing wine but educating those who visit on how to enjoy it and incorporate wine into their lives.

From funny online skits and tastings to educational content, their website is a great way to get a peek into what makes this winery so special.

LJ Crafted Wines – La Jolla

A family-friendly tasting room, this is great for anyone wanting to head from the beach to try some wine, or vice-versa. Enjoy both indoor and outdoor seating, cheese boards, and seasonal gourmet small plates that pair nicely with your wine selections.

This urban winery ages the grapes to make their own signature wines and offer them to local consumers. Make a La Jolla day of it and head to La Jolla Shores for some time in the sun before enjoying the evening breeze and delicious wines.

Getting to San Diego Wineries

If you’re coming from the downtown San Diego area, you’re in a good position to visit all three of the wineries we’ve talked about here. It’s important to note, though, that Koi Zen Cellars in Carmel Valley Ranch is going to take a bit longer to get to.

·  Take the I-5 N up to La Jolla from downtown San Diego. It takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

·  You’ll also take the I-5 N up to Clairemont, just east of Pacific Beach, to get to Blue Door Urban Winery. This is south of La Jolla, so it should take under 15 minutes in the car.

·  To get out to Koi Zen Cellars in Carmel Valley Ranch, near Poway, you’ll take the I-15, or combine the CA-163 and I-15 N for about 30-40 minutes.

These should be plenty easy to get to, but you can always budget for splitting an Uber, if needed.

San Pasqual Valley

Now, if it’s a bit of a day trip you want but Temecula feels too far or Mexico feels overwhelming for a first wine tour, this is your spot! It is traditionally spelled San Pascual, so don’t get confused if you see things spelled both ways when referring to this area east of Escondido.

This valley is directly south of Temecula and parallel to Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe, too, so we can tell that there must be lots of geographical and climate-based similarities between these locations.

Orfila Vineyards and Winery – Escondido

With plenty of events, a consistent daily schedule of tastings, a wine club, and lots of space both indoors and outdoors, Orfila Vineyards and Winery is a great spot for any and all wine lovers.

You can take their winery signature tour, take a look at their winery blog, and chat with staff to learn more about wine, how they make it, and why it is so special. You can even take a virtual tour first, to get a sense of the area.

Their location is easily accessible, only 30 minutes from San Diego and 15 minutes from the I-15 and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. You won’t have the hassle of getting to a far-off location, but you’ll also feel like you stepped into a totally new part of SoCal when visiting. This really is the best of both worlds!

Bernardo Winery - Rancho Bernardo

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Bernardo Winery (@bernardowinery)

This is Southern California’s oldest winery, and you can see how immersed it truly is in its community. The family-owned winery located in Rancho Bernardo is the oldest winery in Southern California that has continuously operated.

Home to festivals like the San Diego Vinter’s Wine Festival and high-quality wines, Bernardo Winery is certainly a fun one!

There are village shops with local products in their stunning courtyard space, areas that host events like weddings and other celebrations, and amazing coffee and Italian food to go along with the whole experience.

You could easily spend an entire day here and might choose to if you don’t wish to drive too far in between other area wineries.

Milagro Farm Vineyards and Winery – Ramona

Just 50 minutes to the east of San Diego, you’ll find 100% estate-grown grapes being turned into delicious wine. This organic farm and orchard space boasts lots of space and holds integrity at the core of its process. Milagro Farm Vineyards and Winery is the perfect way to get out into nature at San Diego’s edges.

While there are plenty of learning opportunities, you should also expect to have a ton of fun!

Explore the tasting room and its beautiful views, and the grounds of the vineyards, and ask about the leisure activities that are being offered at the time of your visit. There is always something to look forward to here!

You can expect red wines, white wines, and sparkling rosé all year round.

Castelli & Pizarro Family Winery (Castelli Family Vineyards) – Ramona

Nearby, at 36 miles east of downtown San Diego, sits Castelli and Pizarro Family Winery in Ramona’s rolling hills. You can enjoy walks outside and sit at one of their tables to enjoy the view, snacks, great conversation, and even better wine.

If a bar is your thing, head inside to find high ceilings, Italian-style stucco, and a custom bar that sits next to many of the wine barrels aging this year’s harvest. You get to enjoy the wine and the process all at once, it is a beautiful experience!

We hope you don’t have to do any work while you’re there, but they do have good WiFi if any member of your group has to be online during your visit.

This is a great space for events, with outdoor space- and they allow outside catering!

Getting to San Pasqual Wineries

The valley is basically on the way up to Temecula, which is northeast of San Diego. You’ll go far past the hiking hub of Poway as you get close to Ramona, which is also a popular area for hiking, camping, rodeos, and more.

From downtown San Diego, you can take the I-15 N all the way up to the San Pasqual Valley, starting by hopping on the CA-163 if needed. The drive should take under an hour, especially if you leave in the morning to maximize your day out there. Try to miss rush hours for a peaceful, well-paced drive through some of SoCal’s best hills!

Head to Temecula Wine Country

Winery San Diego

Temecula is one of the biggest testaments to the fact that you do not have to go to Napa Valley just for excellent wines, especially when some of the best wineries are practically in your backyard. From live music to rolling hills, food like gourmet pizza and brie cheese in bread bowls, award-winning wines, and the overall ambiance of Temecula, this place has it going on!

So, it’s really possible to easily get to the wine country of Southern California? Yes, and we hope that you get a chance to try out this hub for wine lovers. If you go enough, you might even end up as part of a wine club, or two, or three… who are we to judge?

Wilson Creek Winery

This is hands down one of the best wineries in Temecula. Not only is it highly rated with plenty of options from a sauvignon blanc to a sparkling rose to a cabernet franc, but the staff are all wonderful at explaining the types of wines and how they might fit your preferences.

This is a fun spot to take a large group, with plenty of space at tables scattered around the outdoor space and fixed bars both inside and outside. Make it a picnic with their snack options in the fridge or opt for a fuller meal from their grill.

If you get tired of drinking (hey, it’s a marathon, not a sprint) you can peruse their local vineyard and see the local grapes that are used to make their stunning local wines.

Callaway Vineyard and Winery

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Temecula Life (@temeculalife)

Another great Temecula staple is Callaway, where you’ll find an even larger area of sprawling vineyards and hills, tasting spaces, and a huge restaurant with some incredibly prepared food. This one is definitely going to take you a while, as you eat and drink while soaking in all the views.

Even more incredibly, Callaway has been around since 1974 and was the first winery in Temecula Valley to open up. You have to visit this institution if you’re in the area.

Join them for live music from local artists on Sundays from 12-4 pm, if you happen to be in Temecula on a Sunday.

Maurice Car’rie Vineyard

Complete with a full outdoor green space and a gazebo, this winery is conveniently situated near the other popular Temecula vineyards and wineries. They are well-known for their bread bowl filled with brie cheese and their boozy pops- popsicles placed into a glass of their sparkling wine.

Enjoy time with friends at their picnic benches or play cornhole, even, when the weather is nice enough.

Their wine club is a fun one, allowing the wine to be shipped to members along with access to lots of members-only discounts and offerings. Choose between 4 membership options and make sure you get the award-winning wines that you prefer.

Getting to Temecula Wineries

Since the San Pasqual Valley is just a bit south of Temecula, you can take the same beautiful route through the hills, valleys, and greenery of Southern California. You’ll get to Temecula in about an hour and 35 minutes, which is getting close to the perfect cutoff for a day trip.

Take either the I-15 N all the way up or break off around the San Pasqual Valley to get on Valley Center Road to avoid the congestion of the highway. This will be a much windier back road, but the views are great, and it often feels less stress-inducing than the highways of California do.

Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe

Valle de Guadalupe

This section of Mexico’s Baja California is renowned for its amazing coastal views, hilly drives, and premium wines. The only dangerous thing is that it might be hard to stop returning for more! If you haven’t been on a wine tour (self-planned or with a group) in Valle de Guadalupe, you’re missing out.

There are almost too many amazing spots here to name just a few, but here are some of our favorites:

One of the valley’s oldest producers, L.A. Cetto is now also the biggest producer of table wines in the country of Mexico. If that doesn’t draw you to this iconic spot, maybe their rustic tasting room and sprawling vineyard space will.

They are well-known for wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah and have over 700 awards, medals, and recognitions under their belt.

This established winery is the best starting place, with tastings at multiple price points. You can also choose to do the Angelo Cetto Experience- a cellar tour, private wine tasting in a VIP room (up to 8 people,) and a souvenir!

Monte Xanic

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Monte Xanic (@monte_xanic)

With an outdoor tasting room on a wood deck, you can come here after your cellar tour to enjoy a $28 USD tasting of 4 incredible wines. Explore their vineyards, of course, but the tasting room feels like the true highlight of Monte Xanic.

The patio is covered and overlooks a pond, mountains, and plenty of trees. It is stunning, to say the least, and the wine only makes it all that much better.

From the winemakers to the CEO and everyone who helps Monte Xanic run, it is clear to see the passion that people have for this winery and sharing their love of wine with guests.

Villa Montefiori

Finally, Villa Montefiori is another staple in Valle de Guadalupe, with a stunning red exterior on top of a sloping hill. The outdoor patio is perfect for taking in the view but the inside is stunning and a great place to be if the weather is cooler outside.

Enjoy their special French and Italian varietals like Cabernet Sangiovese and Shiraz Cabernet before indulging in delicious Italian food with a Mexican twist.

The vines that make this wine are all Italian, and the two-story tasting room is both sleek and comfortable, offering even more views through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

While you can do this as a day trip, keep in mind that it doesn’t necessarily have to be. You can choose to stay at a hotel and get plenty of extra time to wine and dine your way through Valle de Guadalupe. This entire part of Baja California is beautiful and well worth an extra few days of exploring if you have the flexibility.

Getting to Valle de Guadalupe and Wineries

To make it easy, let’s say you take your car down from San Diego. While you can always take the Blue Line trolley to San Ysidro, you’d then either need to rent a car, book a lengthy Uber, or plan for a wine tour where transportation is included. These are all great options, but we like to envision this day trip as one where you can be fully in control of your schedule!

So, you’ll want to leave pretty early in the morning to account for the time it will take to sit in line at the El Chapparal vehicle crossing point of the San Ysidro border crossing area.

The Mexican border itself is only 17 miles from downtown San Diego, meaning that you can drive to Tijuana in just about 30 minutes, depending on how traffic is looking. From there, you’ll take México-1D almost exclusively. Be prepared to have some pesos to pay tolls, but this route will get you to Valle de Guadalupe in just under an hour and a half. From downtown San Diego to Valle de Guadalupe the drive is just over two hours in total.

We recommend downloading offline maps on your phone in case your connection gets spotty anywhere along your drive, but this is a simple route and you’ll probably see many of the same cars as you make your way down to Baja’s wine region.

Wine Tours Vs. Driving Yourself

The biggest consideration when deciding whether to do a wine tour or to navigate wineries by yourself is flexibility vs. cost.

Most wine tours are going to be cost-effective and give everyone in your group the freedom to drink, but planning your own route will require that someone in your group stays sober so that you can explore wineries at your own pace.

The most important thing is that you enjoy your wine tour in a fun, safe way!

You can also check out additional area wineries, like Baily Winery in Temecula wine country which uses their own grapes to produce wines, and the San Pasqual Winery which also utilizes grapes grown across California.

To venture out further, Santa Barbara's Pali Wine Co. produces an impeccable pinot noir.

I will definitely be booking another trip with “Jeep Adventure Wine Tour’s”

Kristin Morgan on 04/05/2023

We had the absolute best time on this tour while visiting Temecula! Greg took us to 3 of the BEST wineries, he was very knowledgeable about the country and wine, and tailored the tour to fit our likes and interests. We got busy with life and forgot to book our tour early. I called the day before and Justin the owner worked his magic and made this happen for us. The tour absolutely completed our trip and I can't wait to go on it again the next time we are back in Temecula!

Vivian Thiel on 03/07/2023

I never thought I'd see the day when my husband would willingly join me on a wine tour, until I stumbled upon Jeep Adventure Wine Tours. I told him it involved off-roading in a Jeep, and suddenly he was all in. It was the perfect combination of adventure and indulgence, and we had an absolute blast. I got a little bit tipsy on laughter and wine. Plus, we got to bring some great wine home. If you want to convince your non-wine-drinking partner to join you on a tour, this is the way to do it. I highly recommend Jeep Adventure Wine Tours for a unique and hilarious experience that you won't forget.

Sadie S. on 10/15/2022

This was such an incredible experience. From the moment Greg picked us up to him dropping us off it felt like a incredible and luxurious time. The jeep is brand new and obviously built for comfort and luxury while still offering that jeep experience. The wines were top-notch and we got to visit wineries and stores we never would have found on our own. Top it off with a delicious lunch, Greg's knowledge and excellent service we recommend this to anyone looking to spoil themselves or someone they love.

Dee Ann M.

Dee Ann M. on 10/03/2022

This is the second jeep tour we have taken with Greg and would highly recommend. He picked us up and took us to wineries he knew we would enjoy that would provide a great experience and provided lunch as well. The jeep was such a fun way to experience wine country and Greg's jeep was the bomb!

And finally, here’s what else you can do at Safari Park . That’s a page that I wrote that covers the animal exhibits, shows, and keeper talks. And if you’re wondering where to eat I’ve also written an article on where’s the best food ?

Wildlife Safari Tour

Inside San Diego Safari Caravan (now called Wildlife Safari) truck with shade cover.

The 1-hour Wildlife Safari is the most popular tour at San Diego Safari Park followed by the 90-minute Twilight Wildlife Safari. You go inside the African animal enclosure in an open-air covered truck. Twilight tours add a light meal. Deluxe Safari is 90 minutes long and also tours the Asian enclosures .

The worst thing about these Safaris is that there are sometimes so many opportunities for close-up photos of animals that you won’t know where to point your camera first.  The best part of them is that you have the opportunity to feed giraffes if the animals are feeling hungry. Don’t worry, they’re ALWAYS hungry.

There are 3 different variations of this Safari plus an alternative for those with teenagers:

Wildlife Safari

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Price: $89 – 105 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required.
  • Age restrictions: Ages 3+. Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by a paid adult
  • What’s Special: The overwhelming SIZE of a 4-foot long giraffe head next to yours. And how daintily they take the acacia leaves from your fingers.
  • Deals : Check HERE for discounted tours for SanDiegoing readers from aRes Travel — San Diego’s local authorized ticket source.

Twilight Wildlife Safari

  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Price: $109 – 129 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required.
  • Age restrictions: Ages 3+. Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by a paid adult
  • You’ll also enjoy a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic drink with some tasty nibbles at a stunning overlook.

Feeding and petting rhinos on a San Diego Safari Park Deluxe Safari truck tour

Deluxe Safari

  • What’s Special: The Deluxe Safari provides you with your best chance to pet a rhino. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s more likely than on either of the other truck safaris. Why? Maybe because the One-Horn rhinos in the Asian fields are a bit smaller than the White rhinos in the other safaris? Still, stroking the soft snout of a 3,500-pound animal instead of a 5,000-pound one is ok with me. And there are always hungry giraffes!

Combine A Truck Safari with a Zipline Experience

If you’ve got teenagers or other adrenalin junkies in your group, try the Deluxe Flightline Safari (further down this page). It combines a shorter truck caravan safari with a 3,520-foot zipline ride. Same cost, but more experiences!

Wildlife Safari Tips

Feeding a giraffe on a San Diego Caravan Safari, my sister Mary Beth.

Feed giraffes, but don’t touch them . Keep your hands low during feeding. Raise your hand just a bit so that they can see the acacia leaves. Then let them reach down for the leaves.

Why? They use their heads as battering rams in dominance contests. Your friendly hand reaching towards their head can be viewed as an aggressive gesture. So no high-fives with giraffe horns. That avoids misunderstandings with a creature 10 times your size and makes for better photos as well.

Tips for your San Diego Safari Park Caravan Tour, like the safest way to giraffes like this one following the tour truck.

THIRSTY? Bring drinking water in a container with a closed lid. Sip, don’t guzzle unless you’ve got an iron bladder.

MOBILITY ISSUES : If anyone in your party has mobility issues or needs to use a wheelchair call 619-718-3000 after you purchase your ticket. They will make arrangements for you.

RESTRICTIONS

  • Selfie sticks must be stowed away. They can scare animals.
  • No outside food, beverages, or bulky camera equipment (small tripods are ok if they’re used as monopods)
  • Admission is separate and required.
  • 5 or more days before reservation – changes allowed but $15 Administrative Change Fee will be charged.
  • Less than 5 days before reservation – changes not permitted

CANCELLATIONS

  • 5 or more days before reservation – changes allowed but $25 Cancellation Fee will be charged.
  • Less than 5 days before reservation – payment not refundable.

Sun-Up Cheetah Safari Tour

wine safari san diego

Do you love cheetahs? Then this is San Diego Safari Park’s best tour for you. It’s the very best way to get amazing cheetah photos like the one above.

  • Duration : 1 hour
  • Start Time: 8:00 AM on most Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays
  • Price: $99 – 105. Admission is separate and required for each guest.
  • Age restrictions: All ages ok. There must be a responsible paid adult present for every 3 children. Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Proof of age of children may be required.

You’ll get into the park early and meet your experienced guide for a walk down to Shiley’s Cheetah Run . There you’ll see a cheetah fly by at nearly 70 miles per hour from a prime viewing location.

After the cheetah chases the mechanical lure down the track you’ll head down to the Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook . There you’ll get to see another speedster, this one flying through the air. After all that rushing around, relax with a savory brunch. Enjoy coffee, tea, mimosas, and the only San Diego restaurant view that includes giraffes, rhinos, and antelope.

  • Purchase your admission ticket(s) in advance online. You will be arriving before the ticket sale booths are open. Have your admission ticket printed or ready to be scanned on your cell phone.
  • To get the best viewing locations for all of these tour events, arrive about 30 minutes before check-in so you get the first pick. But don’t worry if you can’t be early. There aren’t any “bad” locations.

Cart Safari Tour

A Cart Safari is the best tour at San Diego Safari park if you’ve got small children or babies. The cart is much lower to the ground than the truck used in the Wildlife Safari. It’s much easier to get in and out to view animals while carrying infants or toddlers. The ride is also much smoother since Cart Safaris only go on paved roads.

You’ll have a private tour driver/guide. They’ll be masked and the cart has special screens to social distance your guide from your household group. But they’ll still be able to hear and see you to answer just about any question and direct you to wildlife feeding opportunities and photo stops.

  • Price: $55+ per person. Admission is separate and required for each guest.
  • Age restrictions: None. Infants and children under the age of 2 are welcome as long as they sit on an adults’ lap. There’s a limit of two lap children per group. Children 15 years old and younger must be with a paid adult.
  • Two Options: Asian Cart Safari or African Cart Safari

There Are 2 Flightline Safari Zipline Rides and Tours at Safari Park

Flightline safari.

  • Duration : 1 hour. Includes orientation session and Fledgling flight
  • Price: $77 – 85
  • Age restrictions: 8+ years old. There must be one paid parent or guardian accompanying up to 3 children aged 8 to 15 at all times. If you’re 16 or 17 you may ride the flightline alone, but you must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver at check-in.
  • Deals : Check HERE for daily discounts for SanDiegoing readers from aRes Travel — San Diego’s local authorized ticket source. TIP : The deals are best when you need them most, on weekends and holidays.

Take an exhilarating flight down a zip line 2/3rds of a mile long. Soar up to 130 feet above herds of wild antelope, giraffes, and rhinos.

You’ll take a training course on the Fledgling run. There you’ll become familiar with the procedures and safety equipment. Once you’re comfortable with the short Fledgling flight, you’ll be transported to the launch platform for the Flightline Safari. You land near the campground at Kilima Point.

Deluxe Flightline Safari

This tour is a very good deal for groups that include restless teenagers looking for a bit more action. It adds a truck caravan tour into the African plains exhibits before your orientation session and zipline flight. You can get up close with the animals, take great photos, and ride the zip line for the price of just the Wildlife Safari truck tour.

  • Duration : 90 minutes.
  • Price: $89 – 105

Safety Restrictions: You will be asked to sign a liability waiver. You must be able to understand the waiver and be able to follow instructions in English. There’s a weight limit of between 60 and 300 pounds (your weight may be checked).

The safety harness must fit comfortably. Wear snug-fitting closed-toe shoes. Do not drink alcohol before the Flightline Safari. If the trainers or those assisting you think that you’ve been imbibing you will not be allowed on the zip line.

If you don’t meet all of these qualifications you will be denied access to the zip line and there will be no refunds.

Behind the Scenes Safari Tour

If you’re looking for an insider’s view, these will be San Diego Safari Park’s best safaris for you. There are 3 different safari options available, each focusing on one animal or exhibit area. But no two Behind the Scenes Safari Tours are exactly the same. All of them provide an intimate look at off-exhibit areas that are inaccessible to the general population of Safari Park guests.

You’ll take a ride on a small electric cart and then explore on foot with a guide who’ll fill you in on the park’s animals and conservation initiatives.

There are three Behind the Scenes Safari Tour s:

Elephants & Friends

Have a close encounter of the pachyderm kind! See the Safari Park elephant herd from a private viewing area. Discover how they’re cared for and what’s being done to protect their wild relatives. Selfie sticks are not permitted on this tour.

  • Price: $89 – 105 per person. Admission is separate and required for each guest.
  • Age restrictions: Children 3-15 must be accompanied by a paid adult. A maximum of 2 children per group.

Rhinos & Friends

Get close to rhinos. Explore behind the scenes at Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. Here the Safari Park staff is developing assisted reproductive techniques that may bring back the Northern White Rhino from functional extinction.

You’ll also take a trip around the park’s large field exhibits and view many other species there. You have to be able to stand or walk for at least 60 minutes to take this tour.  Selfie sticks are not permitted here.

  • Age restrictions: Children 3-15 must be accompanied by a paid adult. A maximum of 2 children per group. A maximum of 2 children per group.

Roar & Snore Safari Tour

Safari Park Roar and Snore tents, animals, food.

In my ever so humble opinion, and that of many others, this is the BEST safari at San Diego Safari Park. You can experience the sights and sounds of sleeping on safari in Africa without traveling there (no extra vaccinations needed!).

Fall asleep to elephants’ rumblings. Wake to the sound of lions roaring. But don’t worry about it being too noisy to sleep. Most of the time it’s so quiet that you can hear the footsteps of giraffes passing by.

What happens at Roar & Snore? Close-up animal encounters, night-time guided walking tours, and a backstage look at some of the animal accommodations. You’ll also enjoy good food, and relaxing around a campfire.

The last time Bob and I went, we saw the inner workings of Lion Camp at night. Did you know that they sometimes put different colored glitter in each lion’s food? Me neither! The colored particles let keepers know which scat belongs to which cat. Examining their feces is just one way that keepers monitor lions’ health.

The sleepovers include a catered hot dinner and breakfast. They’ve got something for everyone with many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan selections. For adults, there’s a cash bar. And everyone will enjoy sitting around the campfire eating s’mores and listening to the guides and campers trading stories of their wildlife experiences.

Most Roar & Snore Safaris include an evening or early morning Africa Tram ride. It’s magical. The animals in the African multi-species enclosures are at their frisky best. It seems as if they’re trying to get all of their sparring, running, and chasing done in the cooler weather.

The campsite overlooks the African Plains multi-species enclosure loaded with antelope, giraffes, rhinos, gazelles, wildebeests, and many other animals. Clean restrooms and a limited number of showers are available. The tents are clean and spacious.

If you cringe at the thought of sleeping on a cot or the floor of a tent you’ll probably be happier spending the night at a nearby hotel. I’ve written a guide to the best local lodging close to Safari Park .

There are 3 different tent options:

Classic tent.

  • $149 (Ages 3+)
  • $30 (Ages 0 – 2)
  • Price is per person. Single campers pay 2-person tent price. Maximum 5 people per tent. Admission is separate and required.
  • Size: 9 ft x 14 ft interior
  • Tent Type: Canvas roof, vinyl-covered tent floor

  • Tent type: Canvas roof, vinyl-covered tent floor.
  • Furnishings: 2 single cots, 2 chairs. Bring your own sleeping bag, pillow, etc.

Premium Tent

  • $229 (Ages 3+)

  • Great for couples looking for a special evening or families of 4.
  • Size: 12 ft x 16 ft interior
  • Tent type: Canvas roof. Wood floors with rug. Electrical outlets (charge your mobile devices!), storage/night-stand

  • What’s Special: Adult topics like animal reproduction are presented by keepers. There are more animal experiences than during the All-Ages offering. The guided hikes are more strenuous. We went backstage at Lion Camp to see the big cats’ bedrooms and care areas.  It was dark in spots and the footing was a bit challenging. There was a cash bar for adults during dinner and the campfire experience.

Girl Scouts Roar and Snore

  • Age restrictions: Ages 5+ with adults
  • Pricing: $139+
  • What’s Special: This is a troop oriented event. There are group guided walks, conservation related activities and animal-oriented crafts.

School Nights Roar and Snore

For more detailed information on what to bring, how to prepare, and a menu, check out the Safari Park Roar & Snore Safari page on their website.

Ultimate Safari Tour

Assemble a Safari Park tour that is customized to your interests and desired activities. Full disclosure, we haven’t been on this safari, but we’re saving up for it! Because of that, I’ve asked a LOT of questions on the phone to the booking team. I hope that you’ll benefit from my research. And if you go before I do, send me pictures!

When you book your Ultimate Safari know the answers to the following questions before you call:

  • What are your favorite animals?
  • Are you interested in feeding any of these animals?
  • Which animal exhibits would you like to see behind the scenes and find out more about how they’re cared for?
  • Do you have any dietary restrictions? They serve you lunch on this safari. You don’t want this experience spoiled by food that you can’t eat!

Duration: 5 hours. It’s easy to add too many activities and animal experiences to this safari. You’ll have to be selective so you don’t feel rushed. Your planner will help you decide how much to see in the time that you have.

Price: Varies depending upon day and seasonality

  • $675+ for a 5-hour tour. Priced per person.
  • $50 – children aged 2 and under
  • Children aged 15 and under must be with a paid adult

Age and other restrictions: Depends upon the activities you choose.

You must book/reserve your tour at least 72 hours in advance . San Diego Safari Park usually only schedules one Ultimate Safari per day. The animals need to be fed and cared for daily and their keepers need to be notified so they can make special accommodations for Ultimate Safari visitors.

Balloon Safari

Soar 400 feet up in a helium balloon. You’ll have great views of San Diego Safari Park and the San Pasqual Valley agricultural area that surrounds the park.

Duration: About 30 minutes. You’ll spend 10 to 12 minutes at the highest viewing point.

Price: Varies depending upon peak hours and days. Plan on spending $20 or less. Reservations are NOT available online. Pay at the gate.

Ages restrictions:   All ages.

Tips: The best times to fly are between 9:00 AM and noon, but it’s open until sunset. The ride may shut down due to windy or rainy conditions. Afternoons in Escondido can be windy. The balloon is grounded shortly before Cheetah Run at about 3:00 PM and afterward while any cheetahs remain near the Shiley’s Cheetah Run track.

Africa Tram Tour

Riding the Africa Tram at San Diego Safari Park - Pre-COVID-19.

Africa Tram is San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s best tour if you’re on a budget . It’s one of the highlights of the park. And it’s free with your park entrance ticket! We’ve ridden this attraction hundreds of times and plan to do it many more.

You get to see dozens of species at once, and they’re always doing something new. The many thousands of rare plants surrounding you and the over 900 acres of open California Sage Scrub habitat make it even more appealing.

Duration: 25 – 30 minutes.

Price: FREE with your paid admission to Safari Park, except for children in school groups. Ride as many times as you want to.

Ages restrictions:   All ages. Children under 2 years of age must remain in their parent’s lap.

  • Skip this one if you have booked a Caravan or Cart Safari, and you are feeling like you don’t have time to see everything on your list.
  • In a rush? You can purchase priority boarding. Check the kiosk at the entrance to the Africa Tram queue.
  • When’s the best time to ride the Africa Tram? The peak hours are from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. So anytime before or after will be good. The animals are most active when the weather is cool. Many people try to take the first Africa Tram trip or one of the last ones for that reason. But there’s really not that much difference. You’re going to see spectacular creatures whenever you go.
  • Where’s the best place to sit? We like sitting in the 2nd or 3rd car. The first car can be a bit noisy. However, that car is the only one with accessible seating for those with mobility issues. So it may be best for you.
  • Which side of the tram is best? You’ll see animals on both sides. And you are encouraged to stand up if the vehicle is not moving. So you’ll be able to take great photos no matter where you sit. However, the cheetahs, zebras, and most giraffes and rhinos are on the right side.
  • Expect long lines on weekends & holidays. There are signs that tell you approximately how long the wait times are. They are fairly accurate. The longest times are from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.The wait times are shorter during Cheetah Run (around 3:30 PM). We also like late afternoon trips because it’s getting cooler and they’re less crowded. The last trip of the day starts 45 minutes before the park closes.
  • Request an “Easy Access Pass” if you have difficulty standing for long periods or are of limited mobility. With this pass, any guest with a disability and 3 additional members of your group, can be directed to a separate boarding area. Park employees are glad to provide extra boarding and disembarking assistance (if requested), to those boarding from the Easy Access areas.

7 Tips for Better Safari Tours

  • Save money by reserving in advance versus purchasing the same day in the park. Plus you’ll be more likely to be able to choose a convenient time.
  • Get the best deal by booking on non-peak days . Safari Tour tickets generally cost less on weekdays. Non-holiday Mondays and Tuesdays are the cheapest. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are a bit more expensive. You’ll pay the most on weekends and holidays.
  • Include parking fees in your budget. Parking is not included and must be paid upon arrival at the parking entrance to Safari Park. Parking costs $15 for passenger vehicles and $20 for RVs. You can have preferred parking by adding $18 to either of the parking fees. “Preferred parking” means that you get a spot close to the entry/exit and you don’t have to walk uphill to get to the Park entrance.
  • Arrive a minimum of 45 minutes before your tour or safari . This will allow time for you to travel from your parking or drop-off point to your safari check-in location. Leave earlier during holidays and on Friday afternoons when the traffic is usually heavier.
  • Check in 10 minutes before the beginning of your safari.
  • Know where your safari check-in location is. Check their map from the San Diego Safari Park website before you arrive.
  • Download their map app. It’s available for both Apple and Android. Apple iOS download here.
  • Android download here.

About Refunds or Cancellations of San Diego Safari Park Tours or Safaris

  • There are no refunds if you arrive late or are a no-show.
  • Make changes or cancellations early! There are no changes or cancellations less than 5 days before the date of your safari.
  • What if you get sick? Call them at 619-718-3000 as soon as you know that you can’t go. Their Reservations Sales Department is open every day at 8:30 AM. They will need your Order Number, so have it with you when you call.
  • Pay attention to the age limits and other restrictions for certain safaris. You won’t be given a refund at the last minute because you didn’t read the tour descriptions.
  • The park reserves the right to cancel any safari or tour because of bad weather, animal welfare concerns or concerns for your safety. If they have to cancel your safari they try to do it as soon as possible and do their best to reschedule your safari at your convenience. If you cannot reschedule, your money will be refunded.  However, if it’s raining and they don’t call to cancel, enjoy! The park can be wonderful when it’s wet. Check out my article on how to enjoy San Diego Safari Park if it rains.

Closing Thoughts

Take the Caravan Safari Deluxe or the Ultimate Safari if you’re visiting for the first time and may not be returning for a long while. Splurge a bit. If you’re feeling guilty about the extra expense, tell yourself that you’re spending the extra cash to help end wildlife extinction.

If one of the paid safari experiences is not in your budget, then take the Africa Tram. Maybe twice. Once in the morning and again right before closing time.

Maybe you’ve read all the way down this page and still aren’t sure whether the Zoo or Safari Park is a better fit for you? In that case, go to my page where I compare the differences between the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and the pros and cons of each.

I hope that this has been a help for you to decide which San Diego Safari Park tour or safari will be best for you and your family.

Your Independent Guide to the Wine Country

Safari and Glamping In Wine Country | Wine Country Adventures

Allison Levine [May 2017]

Safari West Jeep (1)

A trip to wine country is for wine tasting, of course. But in between winery visits, there are restaurant stops, perhaps an afternoon at the spa and shopping. Why not go on safari while you are there are well. Yes, a safari, just like in Africa!

wine safari san diego

A visit to Safari West can last a few hours or a few days. A tour around Safari West is approximately three hours long, with a 45-minute walking tour and a two-hour tour by jeep. The guides are all exceptionally knowledgeable about the animals and make the visit informative and fun. There is also a behind the scenes tour to feed the animals.

But, in case you forgot that Safaris West was in wine country, there are a few fun ways to include wine, and beer, into the Safari.

Brews and Buffalo Private Safari

wine safari san diego

Winos and Rhinos Private Safari

During the three-hour safari drive, stop on a hilltop, relax and enjoy a selection of Francis Ford Coppola wines, as well as the house South African wines, paired with local artisan cheeses and breads.

Cheetahs and Chardonnay Private Safari

This exclusive safari will get you an up-close and personal visit with the cheetahs and their handlers, followed by wine.

Take a little side trip from winery visits during your next visit to Sonoma and go on a glamping safari.
