Fun and informative tour of the city! They do a great job taking you to the main parts of the old town and historic sights. Very knowledgeable and good for chatting with fellow travelers and the tour guide. It's free and you pay a tip at the end in the amount you wish. They have a YouTube channel called Real Prague guided and I saw this to see how it would be. The 2.5 hour tour was a good pace and gave us a break which was nice. You just need to go online and make reservations. I highly recommend them to get an overview of Prague. James was excellent.

As a huge fan of Valery's Real Prague Guide YouTube channel, Hubby and I knew we had to join a couple of tours. We were disappointed that Valery no longer conducts tours, but we loved Kaca and Jakub. Kaca's morning tour consisted of Old Town, Jewish Quarter and Charles Bridge. Jakub's afternoon tour was Prague Castle. Both were knowledgeable and shared lots of information. These tours are considered free walking tours, but please pay the guide for their time and knowledge. Great tours to help us set our orientation and foundation to explore Prague in more detail.

Leaving my review of yesterday's tour here because 100 Spires partners with Walkative! in Prague, and I can't find the latter's site on yelp: I don't expect my Prague guides to have encyclopedic knowledge of every aspect of Prague's history, past or present. But I do think it's reasonable to expect the guide for a tour titled, "Old Town, Jewish Quarter and Charles Bridge tour," to know something about the Jewish Quarter. I also expect him to at least mention the Holocaust, especially after having just devoted considerable time at the Jan Hus statue to touting Czechoslovakia's record on both religious freedom and atheism. Instead, on Tuesday April 4th I had Andrew, a self-professed ancient history major whose primary question to our group once we'd reached the Jewish Quarter was to ask if we could guess what kinds of prices apartments there are fetching these days(!) When I responded that the more important question, to my mind, was why there was no public memorial to the 88,000+ Jewish residents of Prague murdered in the Holocaust, he shut me down and spoke instead about the statue of Kafka in front of the synagogue, urging us to rub the statue's body for good luck, and making a smarmy remark about ladies and rubbing. That was when I quietly departed the tour and canceled the two other Walkative! tours I'd booked for the next two days. I was particularly disappointed having enjoyed super smart, personable Walkative! guides in Barcelona (Filipa) and Berlin (Will). Also because the tour was so clearly full of smart, interested people who could easily have gelled more as a group if given the chance. Btw, the picture I've attached is from the inside of the Spanish Synagogue. You can see it by attending a musical event there or taking one of the tours on offer from the Jewish Museum. I think it's worth mentioning that Andrew asked his how-much-do-you-think-people-pay-to-live-in-the-Jewish-Quarter question after he had taken us to the back of the Spanish Synagogue to state, incorrectly, that "This isn't what you'd expect a synagogue to look like" and refer to Jewish religious services as "mass"(!). Five minutes of online research might have informed him that "Moorish" architecture is precisely in keeping with the design for a Spanish, or Sephardic structure and finds its echoes in the design of nearby Berlin's internationally known mid- nineteenth century "Neue Synagoge." I'm done with Walkative! in this town.

We heard about this free tour through our hostel & thought, well, why not! James, our tour guide, was funny, obviously very knowledgeable in Czech and Prague history & it was very fun route we walked. It was about 3 hours and we had a tiny break in the middle at a cute bakery where we could even get a traditional pastry. We initially went on the tour because of it was free but really enjoyed ourselves and gladly tipped whatever spare cash we broke student travellers had. Would recommend!

Vaclav is an amazing guide! I was so impressed with the quality of this tour. Vaclav just knows the city and just has a way to educate without giving you too much information. Stories and context made this so enjoyable. I was first in Prague is 1991 as the age of 11, I have watched the city grow and now understand so much more after this tour. Don't think of this as a free tour, think of it as a way to get a tour from a local who loves the history of the city. I was so please with this experience! I really enjoyed the WW2 tour! Thanks

We are a group of local walking tour guides who lead daily tours of this enchanting city.

And, in the video below, Valery, Nico, and Vaclav, guides with 100 Spires City Tours, take you on a virtual walk through the Old Town and Jewish Quarter.

We hope to see you on one of our tours.

OVERVIEW AND SCHEDULE

Below is a calendar of some of the great walking tours available in Prague, all from local guides.

Prague, The Enchanting City of 100 Spires

As many of you know, Rene and I just returned from an incredible journey on the Danube River, with a pre-tour in the lovely city of Prague in The Czech Republic. Known to be the "City of a Hundred Spires", it's located on the Vltava River and rivals Paris in terms of beauty, history, and culture.

100 spires city tours

The overall experience was absolutely wonderful in spite of our challenges getting there at the beginning of our journey. I'll talk about that another time...

We were very well taken care of upon our late arrival into Prague with a wonderful, friendly meet and greet by Eva and also by Radek, our very capable Driver. We had a very comfortable drive to our beautiful 5 star Virtuoso hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, conveniently located close to the iconic Prague Castle, the 14th century Charles Bridge, and the Old Town Square.

100 spires city tours

Our tour of Prague was completely private and we absolutely felt like royalty throughout our entire time there. Sadly, it ended up being just 2 nights vs. the 3 nights that we had planned for ourselves.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel was actually a former 14th century monastery and ends up combining this wonderfully preserved history with an elegant contemporary, 5 star quality experience.

100 spires city tours

After we had freshened up, we were immediately whisked away for our planned, private tour of the 9th century Prague Castle. This complex is considered the largest ancient castle in the world occupying an area of almost 750,000 square feet. It continues to be the official office of the President of the Czech Republic.

100 spires city tours

Enroute to the Castle, we ended up visiting the historic Old Town Square where we were able to see the third oldest astronomical clock in the world, built in the year 1410. It also happens to be the oldest working astronomical clock!

100 spires city tours

At the Prague Castle itself, we visited the beautiful Royal Garden, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the amazing Lobkowicz Palace's Museum filled with incredible rooms of art, rare books, weapons, furniture, musical instruments, and many other wonderful artifacts dating back more than 700 years. This family's priceless treasures were originally confiscated by the Nazis during WWII and then by the Communist Regime.

100 spires city tours

At the top of the Palace from a balcony we had the most spectacular panoramic view of the city of Prague - it was so beautiful! We also saw the changing of the guard at the Palace as well.

100 spires city tours

The following memorable day we had was a trip to the beautiful historic town of Kutna Hora, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995.

100 spires city tours

Our first stop was the Sedlec Ossuary that features the famous 'bone church'. It's really quite the experience walking through this incredible place filled with skulls and bones from approximately 70,000 skeletons. One of the truly outstanding pieces that hangs in the center of the chapel is the huge Chandelier of Bones that is supposed to contain every single bone that is present in the human body.

100 spires city tours

This cemetery became popular for people to bring their dead from both the Black Death of the 14th century and then the Hussite Wars in the 15th century. They were attracted to this place since the Abbot of Sedlec brought back some holy earth from a pilgrimage he did in Jerusalem in 1278 that he sprinkled on the cemetery making it consecrated ground for the dead. It's truly quite the site visiting this special church and cemetery.

100 spires city tours

Following this we visited the 'city of silver', Kutna Hora. It's affectionately known as the country's 'national treasury' since it produced Central Europe's hard currency, the silver groschen in the royal mint that used to be located there back in the 13th century. We visited the baroque chapel of All Saints and the unique baroque-Gothic style Church of the Assumption of Our Lady.

100 spires city tours

We then had an incredibly impressive 3 course lunch at the most charming old Bohemian style of restaurant, called Dacicky. The food was wonderful, the people were very friendly and dressed in the traditional garb of the day and the atmosphere was very comfortable.

100 spires city tours

After lunch we went to the stunning Gothic cathedral of St. Barbara. Interestingly, she is the patron saint of miners and since the wealth of this town is based on its silver mines, this is extremely apropos. It's one of the most famous Gothic churches in Central Europe and was truly a site to behold.

100 spires city tours

We returned back to our lovely hotel in order to prep ourselves for the drive from Prague to Vilshofen, Germany located at the southern edge of the Bavarian forest. Our wonderful driver and guide took us directly to the COVID testing site that had been arranged by our river ship company prior to boarding our delightful ship for our Danube River Cruise.

100 spires city tours

I'm realizing now that I'm definitely NOT going to get through the full itinerary of our Danube River Cruise with Prague so this will have to be, Chapter 1. Hopefully, you'll stay with me on this for Chapter 2 next week when we commence our river cruise on the beautiful Danube.

Prague Old Town & Jewish Quarter

100 spires city tours

“I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars” said once a princess standing on a rock and thus Prague was born. The prophecy came true and the city today is not only reaching for the stars with the many church towers (hence it is known as the “city of hundred spires”) but it is one of the brightest stars of Europe. A place you simply cannot miss.

Geographically and politically Prague sits in the very heart of the old continent. Built on the riverside it was developing as a seat of dukes and gaining its fame as a bustling trading city which attracted many merchants, traders and bankers from all over Europe. All this gave it it’s multi-ethnic character with important Czech and German population, being also known for one of the oldest Jewish settlements in Europe. In the 14th century Prague became the seat of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and grew to be the third biggest and most important city in Europe giving its way only to Rome and Constantinople. Once the city of alchemists and scientists, revolutionists, musicians and writers, is still inspiring many.

Set on the winding banks of Vltava river Prague boasts some of the most splendid bridges you can imagine, including the elegant Charles Bridge that has been used continuously for the past 600 years. It is a place where you can witness almost 1000 years of architectural and urban changes with wonderful examples of romanesque, gothic, baroque, art nouveau and cubist buildings. With its old gates and bridges, narrow cobbled streets, the cathedral whose creation spanned over almost 600 years, the oldest astronomical clock that is still working and many other wonders, visit to the Czechs capital makes it totally unforgettable.

And did we mention beer? Not yet? Well, there is beer… and there is beer in Prague, a completely different level of experience. After all, it was the Czechs who invented lager.

Join our tour to discover the atmosphere of Prague, learn its history and secrets with local, licensed tour guides from 100 Spires City Tour.

After visiting the Prague’s Old Town and Jewish Quarter we reccomend taking Prague Castle Free Tour and Prague WW2 & Communist Tour to fully know and understand Prague’s history.

Great tour of Prague with Daniel

We had a tour with daniel. Daniel was knowledgeable, entertaining, helpful and shared some personal experiences which created a connection to the city for participants. Highly recommend tours with Daniel

Simply the Best

The tour has been the best we’ve had in our Eurotrip. We learnt so much about Prague and its history. But also we learnt about how is life in Prague, what are good and bad things about Prague, which is unique and this I attribute completely to Kamil (our guide) who was amazing . Kamil was really prepared and great to talk with, he knew everything about Prague and tried to show us every little detail that one alone would absolutely miss. Thank you very much!

Best tour with Kamil

A well spent 3 hour, a tour filled with historical details of Prague, its social and cultural legacy. it was well balanced with humour and serious notes.

This was an informative and simply amazing tour! We learned a lot while getting the best entertainment. Our tourguide David was an icon! Funny, professional and interactive.

Great tour with Kamil

Amazing tour through Prague with our guide Kamil, that (in his own words) made us see the city through his own eyes. Really recommend it.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
