The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

1piu1uguale3 travel pants

Our travel activities are diverse, and we need pants that can cover all the bases . Thankfully, we’ve legged it just about clear across the country in most of these pants and settled on a wardrobe of winners for your next trip.

While comfort and mobility are essential for an active traveler, we also looked for versatile styles that transfer easily to a night out on the town or even a work event. We gave bonus points for wrinkle-proof and spill-resistant fabrics, and details like pockets and zippers made the best stand out.

Lead tester Katie Griffith tested 13 different pairs of pants for this guide, wearing them all over the Western United States and beyond for almost 2 years. The broader testing team traveled as far north as British Columbia and all the way south to Joshua Tree, Calif., with countless stops in between. These pants have kept us cool during summer heat waves, comfortable on over 5,000 miles of road-tripping, and classy exploring downtown Vancouver, British Columbia.

Our testers are active travelers, always seeking diverse adventures when they leave their front doors. We’ve worn these pants while hiking in the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, rock climbing in the Mojave Desert, dancing at an outdoor concert in Denver, and exploring Seattle and Portland by bicycle. We’ve selected the best styles to keep you moving through the world, wherever you may go.

Check out our comprehensive buyer’s guide and frequently asked questions for helpful tips. And have a look at our comparison chart if you need help in steering your decision-making.

Editor’s Note: We totally refreshed our Women’s Travel Pants selections on June 21, 2024, adding a slate of new award winners from brands such as Patagonia, Outdoor Voices, Topo Designs, and more.

  • Best Overall Women’s Travel Pants: Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants
  • Best Budget Women’s Travel Pants: Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle Pants
  • Most Versatile Women’s Travel Pants: Outdoor Voices RecTrek Pants
  • Most Stylish Women’s Travel Pants: Topo Designs Dirt Pants
  • Best Weather Resistance: Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants
  • Best Work-Ready Travel Pants: Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants

Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants

  • Fabric 89% recycled polyester, 11% recycled spandex blend
  • UPF Treatment No
  • DWR Finish Yes
  • Fit Regular fit, tapered legs
  • Pockets Five with two zip pockets
  • Weight 9.3 oz.

Product Badge

  • Lightweight, breathable fabric
  • Excellent mobility and stretch
  • Sleek, versatile look
  • DWR fabric is resistant to spills and stains
  • Made in Fair Trade Certified factory
  • Zip pocket is not big enough for a phone
  • No UPF rating

The Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants ($99) are constructed with the exact combination of fabric, style, and features that we’re looking for in a pair of travel pants. Newly updated, the Happy Hikes gain a wide waistband, knit cuffs, and a thigh pocket. With these winning marks, they took home the award for this year’s Best Overall Women’s Travel Pants.

Similar in style to our previous award winner, the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle pants , the Happy Hike Studio Pants are made with fabric that looks a bit sleeker and is easier to dress up. While we loved the Dynama/2 Ankle pants, we found that after sustained use, the fabric stretched out and tended to pill. So far, the polyester-spandex blend on the Happy Hike Studios has held its shape after repeated uses and washes. We felt that the extra $10 to jump up to the Happy Hikes was well worth it.

You can feel good about that fabric, too, as it’s all recycled polyester and spandex, and the waistband and cuffs are even made from NetPlus postconsumer nylon — recycled fishing nets. All these fabrics are Bluesign-certified, and the pants are sewn in a Fair Trade Certified factory. That’s a win for eco-friendly globetrotters.

We love how lightweight and breathable these pants are. Our tester, Katie, stayed cool and comfortable while hiking and climbing on a spring trip to Red Rock Canyon, where she encountered daytime highs in the 80’s. She only wished they had a UPF rating to better protect against the strong desert sunshine.

While they’re great for active use, we especially love this pair because they also look put together for sightseeing or grabbing drinks. The DWR finish makes them resistant to spills and stains, which is essential on a longer trip. With the right combination of style, features, and fabrics, the Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants could truly be the only pair of pants you bring on your next active vacation.

Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle Pants

  • Fabric 94% nylon, 6% elastane
  • UPF Treatment 50
  • Fit Slim, tapered leg
  • Pockets Four, with one zip thigh pocket
  • Weight Unavailable

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Lightweight and breathable fabric
  • Versatile style for both active use and casual wear
  • Stretchy fabric offers great mobility
  • Waistband sags a bit when a phone is carried in the zip pocket
  • Fabric pills and stretches out over time

Building out your wardrobe for your next trip? Look no further than the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle pants ($85). The stretch-woven nylon fabric is extremely lightweight, making it perfect for an active day of exploration in the heat, and the price is right to even grab a couple to rotate through on longer trips.

The high elastic waistband offers maximum comfort, while the faux zipper gives the pants a sleeker look. The functionality of these pants doesn’t sacrifice style, either. With a tapered leg and low-profile pockets, you’ll transition seamlessly from crushing at the climbing wall to exploring around town.

Our tester brought these on a multi-sport camping trip to Squamish, British Columbia, and didn’t need another pair of pants the entire weekend. She climbed classic routes and then went out for gelato in the bustling mountain town. Talk about versatility.

With sunny weather in the upper 80s on this trip, she appreciated the high UPF rating, which measures how much the fabric protects against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. She stayed cool in the lightweight fabric despite the steamy conditions. These pants are so comfortable she even fell asleep in them!

After plenty of days exploring, the Dynama/2s hung tough, and for the money, we were impressed. They’re also comfortable, attractive, and highly versatile, making the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle pants a great overall option for any active traveler needing a few extra solid pants to get in the rotation.

Outdoor Voices RecTrek Pants

  • Fabric 90% nylon, 10% elastane
  • UPF Treatment N/A
  • Fit Slightly roomy, mid-rise
  • Pockets Three, with two identical side zip pockets

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Big enough zip pockets to fit a phone, wallet, and keys
  • Weather resistant fabric
  • Excellent mobility
  • Comfy, roomy fit
  • Less breathable in warm weather
  • Fabric pills quickly

Outdoor Voices calls the RecTrek Pants ($98) its MVP or “Most Versatile Pants,” and we have to agree. In fact, these also made it onto our list for this year’s Best Women’s Climbing Pants . The RecTreks offer a high level of mobility and durability without looking too sporty or technical, which is the multi-purpose vibe we’re looking for in every pair of travel pants.

Since she started wearing the RecTreks while updating the climbing pants guide, our tester, Katie, has been doing everything in them. She is a Joshua Tree local and was able to put these to the test in some stormy spring weather in the desert. The water-resistant fabric held up well on a windy, wet day exploring the national park. When temps warmed up, she noticed that the pants felt less breathable than lighter options like the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2.

We love the big zip pockets for securing a wallet or keys. They’re even deep enough to stash a phone, which is a rare feature in women’s pants. We also like the elastic waistband and roomy fit for all-day comfort. One thing we would have liked to see is a hidden ankle drawcord. Our tester found herself stuffing the bottoms of the pants into her socks to prevent a draft on windy days. She also noticed the fabric starting to pill after a few months of heavy use.

Despite those few adjustments, our tester has been wearing these pants almost daily. She has logged ten-hour driving days, hiked and climbed in blustery desert weather, dressed them up with a crop top for drinks, and fallen asleep in them more often than not. For a go-anywhere, do anything pant, look no further than the Outdoor Voices RecTreks .

Topo Designs Dirt Pants

  • Fabric 98% organic cotton, 2% spandex
  • DWR Finish No
  • Fit Straight leg
  • Pockets Four, with one internal zipper pocket
  • Weight 8.2 oz.

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Good amount of stretch
  • Cute colors and trendy cut
  • Optional ankle drawcord
  • Hidden zipper pocket
  • Showed significant wear after one year of hard use
  • Less ideal for active use

Topo Designs sent our tester a pair of the Dirt Pants ($99) when she first tested the more climbing-specific Boulder Pants. Even though they weren’t the pair she was originally after, she found herself living and traveling in the Dirt Pants so much that she recommended them for this year’s line-up. With a casual style that just won’t quit, these pants are our choice for cutting around remote downtowns and markets.

The organic cotton is soft and comfortable, and the 2% spandex provides just enough stretch for us to consider these suitable for travel. Our tester has worn these on flights, to outdoor concerts, out to dinner in Palm Springs, and on long road trips up and down the West Coast. She doesn’t typically choose them for high-intensity activities like climbing or hiking, but they’ve got enough durability to make it happen every now and then.

As a climbing guide, she doesn’t have many pairs of non-technical pants in her wardrobe rotation; these were one of two. She wore them hard all year, enough that she developed a wear spot on the backside of the pants. Some of the fabric around the elastic waistband is also starting to fray.

While not quite as durable as we hoped, our tester loved the fit and style so much that she still wants them in another color (and they have great colors!) As someone who has a hard time finding pants that are small enough in the waist and big enough in the thighs, she liked the elastic waistband and straight-leg style. At five foot two, she’s shorter than average, and the length worked well for her; taller people should expect them to hit above the ankles.

For trips that involve a lot of hiking or other outdoor activities, we’d recommend pants with a bit more mobility and breathability, like the Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants . But for sightseeing, air travel, road trips, shorter hikes, and simply everyday life, the Topo Designs Dirt Pants are a cute and comfortable option.

Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants

  • Fabric 95% nylon, 5% spandex
  • UPF Treatment 50+
  • Fit Moderately curvy
  • Pockets 2 zip thigh pockets, 2 hand pockets
  • Weight 9.9 oz.

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Bluesign-certified fabric ensures safe and sustainable textile production
  • Great water resistance
  • Two-way stretch fabric offers plenty of mobility
  • Wide range of size options
  • Slightly heavy fabric
  • Visible logo

If you’re planning a trip with lots of mountain time, the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants ($85) are the perfect pair to pack. They boast a burly weave, UPF protection of 50+, and a DWR finish that sheds light rain or spills, making the Guide Pros optimal for outdoor activities.

The visible logo on the side detracts a bit from aesthetics, but we like the low-profile zip pockets better than the traditional cargo-style look of many women’s travel pants.

Our tester wore these on a hike to the top of the Stawamus Chief in Squamish, British Columbia. She found the fabric a bit heavy for warm, summertime temps but expected they’d be great on a mission higher in the mountains or during cooler weather. The zip pockets on the side were a bit too small to fit her phone, which she likes to keep handy on hikes for navigation purposes.

These pants run about a size bigger than most of the other styles we tested, and the fit is moderately curvy. Our tester needed a belt to keep these from sliding down while hiking, so the belt loops were a plus! We appreciate how many size options Eddie Bauer offers in this style; they’re made in regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes to help you dial in the perfect fit.

Overall, for active pursuits where you may find yourself subjected to the elements, the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants are a great pair of women’s travel pants to own.

Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants

  • Fabric 86% recycled polyester, 14% elastane
  • UPF Treatment 40+
  • Fit Semi-fitted
  • Pockets 2 zip pockets, 2 hand pockets

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Great style, fun color options
  • Silky, wrinkle-resistant fabric
  • Quick-drying
  • Hidden zip pockets
  • Less versatile for highly active use

The Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants ($99) are our top choice for work travel, with a professional cut and wrinkle-resistant fabric. They win big in the comfort department, too, with silky, ultralight fabric that moves easily with you wherever you go. These would be perfect for a long flight followed immediately by a work meeting or social engagement.

Our tester wore these on a visit to the Seattle Aquarium with her highly active 2-year-old niece before grabbing lunch downtown. She loved the freedom of movement they allowed her while chasing after a toddler, and she felt chic exploring the city.

After packing them haphazardly in her duffel bag for her trip, she also discovered that the silky fabric is also surprisingly resistant to wrinkles. She also liked the hidden zip pocket in the back for stashing a small key or credit card while out and about.

We wouldn’t recommend the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants for highly active pursuits like hiking or rock climbing, but they are one of the only women’s travel pants we tested that would transition seamlessly from a plane to the office. Made from recycled polyester sourced from post-consumer plastic bottles, they also score bonus points for sustainability.

Patagonia Skyline Traveler Pants

  • Fabric 88% nylon, 12% spandex
  • Pockets Five pockets with one zip thigh pocket
  • Weight 10 oz.

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Lightweight, breathable fabric with good stretch
  • Stylish fit
  • Zip pockets
  • Two inseam lengths available
  • Ankle zippers make the length less flexible

Patagonia combines style and mobility with the Skyline Traveler Pants ($99). They’re high-waisted and form-fitting with slim, tapered legs in a cut similar to skinny jeans. Scoring big points in versatility, these pants are easy to dress up or down.

The stretch-woven blend of nylon and spandex is lightweight and breathable and allows good mobility. With a low-profile side zip pocket, these pants check a lot of boxes for us.

During a heatwave in Washington, our tester stayed comfortable wearing these pants while car camping. She said they felt cool and breathable, even in sweltering conditions. Boasting a UPF rating of 40+, the Skyline Travelers also provide solid sun protection, and the DWR finish curtails light moisture.

Our lead reviewer passed these on to a taller friend because the regular inseam seemed to run a bit long. Additionally, the ankle zippers make it difficult to adjust the length because it’s awkward to wear them rolled up.

Patagonia does make these in a 28-inch and 30-inch inseam, so we recommend trying them on to increase the odds of finding a good fit.

prAna Sancho Boyfriend Pants

  • Fabric 98% organic cotton, 2% Lycra elastane
  • Fit Relaxed, boyfriend fit, mid-rise
  • Pockets Four drop-in pockets

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Soft, comfortable cotton
  • Big pockets
  • Inconsistent fit

For when you need to look a bit more put together on the go, the prAna Sancho Boyfriend Pants ($95) are a great option. With a relaxed fit, these are great for checking out museums and urban sightseeing. They could even be dressed up a bit for a casual work meeting or lunch.

The fabric blend is similar to the Topo Designs Dirt Pants ; the organic cotton is soft and cozy, while the elastane provides just enough stretch for these to fit in our travel pants category. They’re less optimal for highly active travel but great for all-day wear.

The roomy, relaxed fit also makes them comfy enough for air travel or long drives. Our tester brought them on a road trip to Bend, Oregon, where she wore them while checking out bookstores and breweries around town.

Our main complaint is the inconsistency of the fit. Our tester has owned several pairs of prAna pants, and she always has a hard time predicting how different styles will fit. Sure enough, the Sancho Boyfriend Pants were way too big in the waist and thighs. Luckily, they have belt loops, but wearing them with a belt made the fabric bunchy around the waist. If buying another pair, she would size down from her normal prAna fit.

Besides the legwork of finding the right fit, the prAna Sancho Boyfriend Pants have a lot going for them. The loose boyfriend fit is a comfortable option to jump into for long days in the saddle, and they look dang good to boot.

Lululemon Stretch High-Rise Jogger

  • Fabric 69% nylon, 31% Lycra elastane (body)
  • Fit High rise, full length
  • Pockets Two, one hidden zip pocket

The Best Women’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Impressive built-in stretch
  • Silky soft fabric
  • Wrinkle-resistant
  • Hidden zip pocket for cards or keys
  • Waistband is a bit bulky

Though it’s not an official category, the Lululemon Stretch High-Rise Jogger ($79) is our favorite style for long travel days. The fabric is soft and silky, with enough stretch to keep you comfortable when you’re jammed in the middle seat on an airplane. It’s the perfect pair of pants to accommodate an impromptu stretch session during a layover.

We suited up in these joggers during 10-hour driving days during a road trip in California. Our tester noted that the fabric was pretty wrinkle-resistant after being shoved in a duffle bag for several days. To relieve some lower back pain from the long drive, she also busted out a quick yoga session at a rest stop midway through the day. She found the comfy joggers to be ideal for the roadside stretch break.

The waistband on the joggers is a bit bulky, albeit pretty comfortable. We wouldn’t want to wear these under a climbing harness or the hip belt of a backpack. The waistband also tended to get a bit bunched up. We did like the hidden zip pocket for stowing keys or a credit card during a midday walk.

For those endless airport days or long afternoons running errands, the Lululemon Stretch High Rise Joggers are a cozy and low-profile option.

Women’s Travel Pants Comparison Chart

How we tested women’s travel pants.

A line of seven pants hung on a bridge railing

The author of and main contributor to this guide, Katie Griffith, works as a seasonal climbing guide and spends much of the year traveling for work in her cargo van. When she’s on the road, her wardrobe is limited to whatever she can fit in a duffel bag, so she knows well the value of multi-purpose, wrinkle-proof clothing.

Katie regularly hosts camping-based climbing and yoga retreats, where she needs to present a trustworthy, professional appearance to her clients. After a day of guiding, she often takes clients out to dinner at local restaurants. If one pair of pants can carry her through the whole day, that’s a definite win.

Our team of testers has worn these pants while traveling all over the American West, from the desert to the rainforest to the cityscapes of Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland. We even made it up to British Columbia to scale the granite cliffs of Squamish and explore the international cuisine of Vancouver. We’ve worn different styles while climbing, hiking, and biking, visited museums and aquariums, hosted dinners for clients, and logged (too many!) long days of driving.

the author walking in front of a bookstore in Oregon

Our travel needs are diverse, so our testers are looking especially for versatility. If we wanted a technical pair of climbing or hiking pants for a specific objective, we’d pull from our gear guides detailing the Best Climbing Pants or Best Hiking Pants for Women .

For travel, we want pants that can do all of the above. They need to have enough comfort and mobility for active exploration while still looking put together for an evening out. Bonus points if we can sleep in them, too. Pants with large logos or super sporty styles did not make the cut, and neither did pairs that restrict movement or limit comfort.

While on the road, our access to laundry is limited, so wrinkle and stain-resistant fabrics are also highly desirable. A durable water-resistant (DWR) finish can help prevent fabrics from absorbing liquids, and a UPF rating protects us from the sun. Pockets are also a must, ideally deep ones that secure phones, wallets, and keys. At least one zipper pocket is a huge plus for added security.

We’ve scrutinized every detail of the pants in this guide, to make sure that they are up to these standards. Whether you’re hopping on a flight overseas or planning a cross-country road trip, we know these styles will serve you well.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Travel Pants for Women

Finding the best pair of travel pants depends on the type of trip you’re planning. We tested a variety of styles, some of which would fare better on a trip that’s heavy on outdoor activities, while others looked sharper for a fancy dinner or work event.

All must be comfortable while in transit, whether you’re road-tripping or traveling by air. Read through the categories below and consider the most important elements for your adventure.

Versatility

A climber chalks up while wearing a pair of travel pants

A pair of travel pants need to do more than just go for a hike. They should be in line with current styles, be appropriate to wear to a work function or dinner if needed, and include special features that make the travel experience a breeze.

The Outdoor Voices RecTrek Pants easily transition from activewear to everyday life, making them our top choice for versatility. The Patagonia Skyline Traveler Pants excel in several of the categories below, which is why they were in close second place for the versatility prize. We like how neither of these styles looks super sporty, but their fabrics are actually pretty technical. They both are quite stretchy, quick to dry, and water resistant. And both have great zip pockets.

The versatility competition between these two depends mostly on your personal style; do you prefer a skinny leg or a roomy fit? The RecTrek Pants are also a tad less breathable than the Skyline Travelers.

Comfort and Mobility

The author stretches before a hike, showing the mobility in a pair of pants

An overseas flight or cross-country road trip always brings a certain level of discomfort. You might spend hours jammed in the middle seat of an airplane, or perhaps you’ll end up sleeping in your car at a rest stop. Exploring a new destination often means hours of walking through museums, riding bikes around town, or venturing into the mountains.

When you’re away from the comforts of home, your wardrobe makes a big difference. Knit waistbands, fabric blends that include elastane (spandex), and lightweight materials all increase comfort and mobility factors. The comfort of the Lululemon Stretch High Rise Joggers and the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle pants don’t sacrifice style and function, making them both excellent pairs of women’s travel pants to consider.

A hiker cuts along a trail in sandals and travel pants

While the ideal fit varies depending on body type and preference, the best travel pants keep you looking sharp, no matter the activity. Baggy lounge pants or cargo styles lost points with us, and we didn’t include any leggings or sweatpants on this list.

The pants that made the cut represent a variety of fits, so you can choose according to your personal taste. One of the main differences between styles is leg width. The Patagonia Skyline Traveler Pants and the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/II Ankle Pants have slim, tapered legs, while the Outdoor Voices Rectreks and the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants have a more roomy fit. Despite differences in fit, all of the styles above have enough stretch to be comfortable.

While it’s always nice to try clothes on in person, we realize many folks shop online out of necessity. So, another helpful tidbit is the relative fit of the various options. We found the Lululemon Stretch High Rise Joggers to run a bit small compared with the other styles, while the prAna Sancho Boyfriend Pants run large. Patagonia adjusted the fit this year for the Happy Hike Studio Pants , so these run a bit slimmer than in past seasons.

Shoppers will find the widest size range in the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants , with sizes from 00 to 26. The Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants also make it easy to dial in the perfect fit, with regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes up to 24W.

The best pairs of women’s travel pants include aesthetic details and a flattering fit while retaining mobility and comfort.

The ideal style for your trip depends on your intended activities. Do you plan to spend a lot of time outside, hiking, biking, or climbing? A pair of high-stretch joggers like the Happy Hike Studio or the Dynama/2 Ankle Pants will suit you well. With elastic around the ankles, the fabric won’t get stuck in bike spokes or get in the way of your climbing shoes.

For checking out museums and art galleries, you might feel more put together in a cotton style like the prAna Sancho Boyfriend Pants or Topo Designs Dirt Pants . We like the faux zipper and side panels of the ultra-comfortable Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants , details that help make them our favorite pair while traveling for work.

1piu1uguale3 travel pants

We love a pair of travel pants that keep our credit card, keys, and phone safe with functional zip pockets. Since we’re also keeping style in mind, a low-profile zip pocket is preferred over bulky cargo pockets. Almost all of the women’s travel pants we tested have at least one zip pocket. We like the hidden zips of the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants and Lululemon Stretch High Rise Joggers for added security, though these would only fit a small key or credit card.

Our favorite pockets are the two big zippered ones on the Outdoor Voices Rectrek Pants . With the roomy fit of these pants, we were able to secure keys, phone, and wallet in the depths of these pockets without them showing much bulk.

UPF Treatment

1piu1uguale3 travel pants

Whether you love walking around cities or exploring the mountains, traveling typically means more time spent outside. Clothing treated with UPF, which stands for ultraviolet protection factor, makes it easier to keep your skin protected during long days in the sun.

When a fabric boasts of UPF treatment of 50+, it offers your skin the maximum possible protection. The minimum rating you’ll see is UPF 15 — anything lower doesn’t provide much protection from UV rays. A pair of pants with a high UPF rating and fabric light enough to wear on a hot day is a win — yet another reason why we love Mountain Hardwear’s Dynama/2 Ankle Pants !

Fabric Weight and Breathability

1piu1uguale3 travel pants

Unless you’re headed for a winter destination, lightweight, breathable fabric is key to a good pair of travel pants. Remember, you’re going to be hauling your luggage through airports, back and forth from hotels, or possibly hiking into the mountains, so weight matters for all of the products you pack. Lighter fabric also packs down to a smaller size, reducing bulk in your luggage.

If you’ll be traveling in warmer weather, a breathable fabric will promote better moisture transfer as you work up a sweat. This will keep you more comfortable if you want to wear longer pants or sleeves to protect against the sun’s UV rays. The lightest and most breathable pants on this list are the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Ankle pants . These have become our go-to pants for hot-weather activities. The Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants are also quite lightweight.

On the heavier, more weather-resistant end of the spectrum are the Outdoor Voices RecTreks and the Eddie Bauer Guide Pros . These fabrics performed better in windy, cooler conditions; we loved the Rectrek pants during an unseasonably cold desert trip this spring. Cotton fabrics will also feel heavier and less breathable than those made with nylon or polyester.

Water-Resistant and Wrinkle-Proof Fabric

1piu1uguale3 travel pants

When access to laundry is limited, spill-resistant fabric is a big benefit. Several of the styles we tested, including the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants and the Patagonia Happy Hike Studio Pants , are treated with a light DWR finish that causes liquids to bead and run off without leaving a stain. This also makes them more water-resistant if you find yourself out and about when a storm rolls through.

The cotton styles we included won’t perform as well against spills or rain; the Topo Designs Dirt Pants and the prAna Sancho Pants are slower to dry and less water resistant than those made with nylon or polyester. We didn’t include any travel jeans on the list, but denim performs similarly to cotton when it gets wet. In fact, we would probably only consider jeans to be “travel” jeans if they had added stretch from elastane or spandex.

On most adventures, your life is packed into a backpack or suitcase. Even the most meticulous clothing folders benefit from wrinkle-resistant fabric. If a pair of pants look fresh a week into a Europe trip, we’re stoked. We were surprised with how sleek the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants and the Lululemon High Rise Joggers looked after weeks of being stuffed in a duffel bag.

1piu1uguale3 travel pants

It seems that to find the features we’re looking for — versatility, style, comfort, and good pockets — you’re likely to pay around $100. Almost all of the pants we included here fall between $95 and $100.

One of our favorites, the Dynama/2 Ankle pants , came at a slightly lower price tag of $85. We have noticed over time that this pair doesn’t hold up quite as well as some of the others; the fabric tends to stretch out and pill over years of use. However, that is also true of some of the more expensive options like the Topo Designs Dirt Pants .

On the higher end, you’ll find the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants clocking in at $150. These are constructed with more technical fabrics, which likely explains the higher price tag. With stronger wind and water resistance, the Guide Pros are made to withstand a wider variety of elements.

Travel pants are made with a variety of fabrics, but most include some elastane (spandex) for stretch and mobility. The higher the percentage of elastane in the fabric, the stretchier the pants.

Nylon and polyester are other commonly used fabrics due to their quick-drying and moisture-wicking capabilities. The prAna Sancho Boyfriend Pants and the Topo Designs Dirt Pants are the only pairs we tested made with cotton, but they both still include 2% elastane or spandex for added stretch.

Pants with big cargo pockets are common in the hiking and travel pant lineup, but they’re not the only options around. The deep side pockets do provide some convenience when you want to stash a phone, wallet, or keys while exploring.

For added style, we like low-profile side zip pockets, like those on the Patagonia Skyline Traveler Pants or the hidden zip pockets on the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants .

When you’re crunched in a middle seat, your clothing should be as comfortable as possible. Soft fabric with elastane blends adds stretch when you’re in a contorted position.

Wrinkle-resistant fabric with a stylish fit allows you to deplane and go straight out to dinner without needing a wardrobe change. Several of the styles we tested blend all three of these factors, including the Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pants and the Patagonia Skyline Travelers .

The best travel pants allow you to only pack one or two pairs for your entire trip. That’s why we looked for versatile styles that you can either take hiking or out to dinner.

Quick-drying fabrics make it easier to clean your pants in a sink while en route and DWR finishes prevent spills from soaking into the fabric in the first place. The Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants and the Outdoor Voices RecTrek Pants had the best DWR finish of the styles we tested.

11 Best Travel Pants for Women

From the best pants for air travel to the best travel jeans, these are the most comfortable and best women’s travel pants for every destination and situation.

Best Travel Pants for Women

When packing for vacation, a business trip, or to see family, there is a better-than-average chance that you’ll be packing a pair of pants. Even if you’re the type of woman who really likes skirts, it’s good to have a great pair of travel pants in case it gets chilly or you plan to be more active and adventurous than your skirt or dress may allow. Perhaps you’ll be hiking and don’t want pesky critters or poisonous plants irritating your skin. Pants. Maybe your friends believe in setting the air-conditioning at one freezing temperature every day of your trip. Pants. Or you might just want to sprawl on the floor to watch TV and hang out. The answer is still pants.

Trying on Pants

But when searching for the best travel pants for women, what’s on your list? Do you prioritize pockets and elastic waistbands? Are you looking for something dressier for a business meeting or lunch? Or would you like something you can easily dress up or down so you only have to bring one pair? Those are all great qualities, and while not all travel pants can be everything for every woman, we’re looking for pairs that check multiple boxes for every type of female traveler.

Why You Should Trust Us

First of all, we’ll give you a second to check the author of this guide. Back? Good. So, you've seen that a woman has had her hand in every aspect of this guide, from product selection to writing and editing. A woman tested all of the products we’re recommending. After tons of research to find dozens of options, she wore all these pants to narrow the list to those comfortable to travel in and explore a new place, yet not so cozy that they looked like pajamas. Hey, if you want to travel in fuzzy fleece pants, we’re not here to stop you, but we’re looking for travel pants that are slightly more aesthetically pleasing, functional, and durable than that.

Pants on bed

The best travel pants for women are comfortable to wear on a plane, while exploring a new city, or in the great outdoors, and also look good enough to stop for a bite at the local cafe. Some of the pants on this list can be dressed up for more formal occasions, and some are best taken on the trail; we’ll be sure to let you know which is which.

How We Tested It

Test 1: Our tester wore all the pants on this list for a day, sometimes two or three, to see how they felt. She sat at a desk, gardened, walked the dog, and visited family. That helped us to figure out how comfortable they would be when sitting in an airplane seat for 13 hours or walking miles through New York City. We wanted to know if the waistband would dig in uncomfortably after a meal or if the thighs would start to pinch, as well as if your phone would drag the pockets down or anything would chafe if you wanted to explore the local hillside or museum.

Test 2: Next up, the squat test. Whether you drop your keys or need to take a photo of a cute caterpillar on a hike, you need travel pants that won't pinch your thighs or ride up on your calves as you move around.

Pants in washing machine

Test 3: Finally, we did laundry. The best travel pants for women can take a tumble in the washing machine on a normal cycle. If you’re unfamiliar with the local language, it may be hard to distinguish the cycles from each other to find delicate or gentle. We hope the normal cycle will be pretty clear, though, so we tossed everything in and hoped for the best. We hung the pants to dry, though, because clothes dryers aren’t available everywhere in the world. Luckily, everything came out looking as well as they did going in (better, in some cases, where the pants had gotten dirty on a hike), so you can rest assured that no pair on this list needs special care.

Vuori Performance Joggers

After a day spent shopping Rodeo Drive or the Magnificent Mile with your girlfriends wearing a super cute outfit and high heels, you may want to slip into something more comfortable. The Performance Joggers are made with a mix of recycled polyester, polyester, and elastane that Vuori calls DreamKnit, and we have to say, it sure feels like a dream. These are seriously the softest pants our tester has ever worn, rivaling her extra fleecy pajama bottoms that never leave home. What makes these the best women’s travel pants is their breathability and style, including a tapered fit. We wouldn’t feel out of place running to the local market or traveling in these pants, especially if you get them in the Black colorway.

They pass the squat test with flying colors because the cuffs don’t even move on your leg as you bend down since the pant fabric stretches to accommodate the movement and then returns back into place as you move. However, the 25-inch (63.5 cm) inseam will make these shorter pants for taller women, though the waistband includes a drawstring to find the perfect fit. It doesn’t dig in after hours of binge-watching “Friends,” and our tester’s phone stayed nicely in the front pocket for a 30-minute walk. You will see its outline, though, in case that bothers you. While some knits end up pilling in the wash, these came out as smooth as they went in.

  • The waistband stays in place even when walking with gear in the pockets
  • While you can’t dress them up, per se, they feel like loungewear but look much cuter
  • There are only two pockets, and neither zip
  • You can see the functional drawstring on the outside of the waistband

Cozy Earth Bamboo Wide Leg Patch Pocket Pant

Sometimes you just want a pair of super comfortable pants when you’re going to be on a plane for a long time, and if so, the Bamboo Wide Leg Patch Pocket Pants from Cozy Earth fit the bill. The wide leg gives the pants a bit of style so you don’t look like you just rolled out of bed and ran to catch a flight, yet the super soft bamboo material feels like you could do just that. It’s mixed with spandex and acrylic for stretch and shine, and the high elastic waist is comfortable when you're sitting for hours. Plus, it includes a drawstring that actually works if you need to cinch them up, which helps hold them at your waist on a walk, which we’ve noticed can be difficult to find in pants of this style. They have a 29 in (73 cm) inseam, and the wide leg passed our squat test with flying colors. We like that the patch pockets are large enough to hold your phone and keys if you run out of room in your sling, though you can see the outline of what’s inside the pocket.

However, they look just as good with sneakers as with flats or sandals, and you can slightly dress them up or down depending on the occasion, so we think these are the best travel pants for women looking for comfortable versatility and who need something to make it through travel days and lounging nights.

  • These are the best pants for air travel and relaxing after a long day of adventures
  • Bamboo is a sustainable material that’s also super soft
  • They’re a little long on shorter users
  • Your phone may fall out of your pockets when sitting with your legs straight out

Gap 365 High Rise Linen-Cotton Trousers

When packing for vacation, you may want to bring along something for nicer dinners. After all, you’re not going to wear your bathing suit everywhere (even if you do the other 10 hours of every day at the resort!). The 365 High Rise Linen-Cotton Trousers from the Gap will help you feel easy, breezy, and beautiful without the discomfort of snug-fitting pants. The high waist fastens with a zipper, a button, and a tab in front, and has an elastic back and belt loops if you need a more custom fit or like that style. Pleats below the waistband create a super-flowy, wide-leg fit that looks great on most body types and is also super comfortable to sit for hours and squat in. Plus, they’re not as wrinkly as other linen pants we’ve tried, so they will be easier to pack for a trip, although we think they could use a touch of ironing after the wash.

These aren’t as functional as some other pants, yet they still have deep front pockets that can hold a phone without dragging down the waist. We’re digging the pinstripe pattern, though you can get them in solid colorways, as well, and you can also order petite, regular, or tall sizes to get the right fit, with inseams ranging from 29 in (73 cm) to 35.5 in (90 cm). You might want to size down if you’re on the shorter side of average, as our 5-foot 5-inch (1.6 m) tester found the regular’s 31.5 in (80 cm) inseam to be too long.

  • You can get them in a variety of colors and patterns to form the basis of your travel capsule wardrobe
  • The fabric is lightweight and soft for warmer weather
  • You may need to size down, even if you take Gap’s quiz. Our tester ended up with a size 4 even though the quiz pegged her as a 6
  • The back pockets are stitched shut, so you’ll need a seam ripper if you want to use them

Libin Cargo Joggers

While the Libin Cargo Joggers are definitely utility pants, what with their many pockets, comfortable waistband, and elastic cuffs, the sheen of the water-resistant material gives them a little more polished look we like. Libin says they’re waterproof, but while moisture beads off and dries fast, it can seep through in a prolonged downpour. Our tester finds the wide elastic waistband to be quite comfortable. It hits right at the waist and includes a functional drawstring to ensure it stays in place, yet it doesn’t dig in uncomfortably after sitting for hours as you may in the plane, train, or car on the way to your destination. And if it starts to, loosen the drawstring. The legs extend right to the ankles of our tester with a 29-inch inseam. You can’t choose your own length, though, as it ranges with the size of the pants you order, from 27 in (68.5 cm) for size X-Small to 29.5 in (75 cm) for 3X-Large. When our tester squatted to the ground, she found the cuffs to have plenty of stretch to slide nicely over your calves without getting stuck. They slide down as soon as you start walking again.

The side pockets have large flaps fastened with hook-and-loop closures to hold your phone, wallet, or cash, as well as zippered hand pockets that are nearly as large. Did we mention that there are also zippers on the rear pockets? The SBS zippers have cords woven through the metal pulls that end in plastic tabs with textured grips, so they’re easy to find and grab without jingling as you walk. We must warn you that the joggers have a bit of an odd odor when you pull them out of the bag, but it dissipates quickly and is likely a result of the waterproof coating on the material.

  • There are gussets on the side pockets to hide the outline of what’s inside better than on the front ones
  • You can get them in a ton of different colors
  • The zippers don’t lay flat, so you can see them sticking out
  • It can be a little difficult to open the flap on the side pockets as the hook-and-loop fastener is very tight

REI Co-op Trailsmith Jogger Pants

For days you’ll be hiking through the woods or around town, you want travel pants that can keep up without worrying about them ripping or catching on stray branches. The Trailsmith Jogger Pants from REI are designed for those travel days. First and foremost, they’re super comfortable, with nice stretch and a comfortable waistband that zips and buttons, yet also has an internal drawstring to help you get the right fit. Our tester had no issue sitting in them all day, so you won’t be uncomfortable on the plane or a long road trip. They’re available in regular or petite, with a 2.5 in (6.3 cm) shorter inseam, though our 5-foot 5-inch (1.6 m) tester had no issue wearing the regular. The deep pockets are great for holding your phone without having it dig into your waist or fall out when you sit down, and a lower pocket on the left side zips up to hold your minimalist wallet. There’s added articulation around the knees so you can crouch down and take a photo of that adorable fuzzy caterpillar, and the ankles are cinched with elastic to keep creepy crawlies from climbing up your leg. However, each ankle also has a zipper that you can undo to go over your hiking boots if you need to, and while they didn’t catch on our tester’s calves during the squat test, that zipper also comes in clutch if you have wider legs. We have to say, the cotton material (with a touch of spandex for stretch) gets a bit warm, so these are best used on the shoulder seasons of spring and fall when the weather is still a bit cool or to hang out around the campfire after the sun goes down.

  • The pockets are so deep you don’t feel your phone pressing into your waist when you sit down
  • They’re great for hiking and more adventurous activities
  • Some of the zippers are rather jangly
  • Although the articulated knees allow for greater flexibility, it looks like you should be able to zip off the bottom of your pants to create shorts

wayre Cruiser Pant

Despite their name, wayre’s Cruiser Pants are also good for trips that don’t involve a boat. They have a casual yet good-looking aesthetic that’s perfect for travel when you want to be comfortable and look nice at the same time. Lunch at a local cafe? Check. Hanging out with friends at the Airbnb? Check. Checking out local religious sites (that allow women to wear pants)? Check. The Like-silk fabric is made with post-consumer plastic bottles and recycled spandex. It’s flowy, and our tester reports that it feels as soft as silk, so we have no issue dressing it up or down, depending on the occasion. These pants were pretty wrinkled from the packing process when they arrived, and while some of them hung out, other stubborn ones remained even after a wash. Meanwhile, wayre says you don’t have to iron these pants and says nothing about whether you should use a hot or cool touch, so we’re hoping they work their way out with use. The wide elastic waistband sits high but doesn’t dig in, even after sitting for hours on end, and there’s a drawstring to keep it in place. Nothing bunches or pinches when we squat down, either. However, they only come in one 26.5-in (67 cm) length.

These travel pants for women also include plenty of large pockets—which you cannot say about every pair you buy—and we like their hidden outline because it keeps them looking more sleek and polished. The functional drawstring keeps the pants in place, even when walking with your phone and wallet in the pockets.

  • There is a large zipper pocket hiding behind the right-hand pocket and a hidden pocket inside the left leg where you can stash a passport
  • The recycled materials help us to feel good about buying and wearing these pants
  • It wrinkles easily when packed
  • A couple of the pockets are pretty hard to find

Ministry of Supply Velocity ReviewTapered Pant

We included the Ministry of Supply Women’s Velocity Tapered Pant in an early iteration of our Digital Nomad Packing List because they’re comfortable enough to wear on the plane while looking good for a business meeting. The mix of polyester, viscose, and elastane look like traditional trousers but are much more comfortable than the pair that came with your first power suit. Our tester wore them on two four-hour plane rides and reported that the elastic waist (with a hidden drawstring) and flexible material feel more like wearing thick leggings.

However, the Velocity pants have a traditional fly with a bar and hook closure to look more polished and hidden zippered pockets, though you can see the outline of whatever you put inside, like your phone. They’re comfortable to squat in, but the ankle stuck around our tester's calves when she did, so she had to pull them back down again when she stood up. The inseam varies with the size you buy, from 27.5 in (69 cm) for size 0-0 to 29 in (73 cm) for size 16. However, their polished aesthetic makes them the best travel pants for women who have to look good the second they land.

  • The stretchy waistband is comfortable, even after days of use
  • Business pants aren’t always machine washable, but these are
  • They have tapered legs, which can bunch when you sit or squat
  • You can see the outline of the zippered pockets

DUER Fireside Denim Mid Rise Slim Straight

When heading out on an Alaskan cruise or to the ski lodge, you’ll want to pack a pair of cozy pants for chilly days. We like DUER because the company prioritizes using plant-based fibers that are better for the environment, like the cotton that makes up 81 percent of these jeans. The Fireside Denim jeans also include polyester, nylon, and elastane for stretch and the fleece lining, which is super soft and provides a little more warmth for cold-weather trips without feeling too bulky or weighing you down. Plus, they’re water resistant, so moisture beads up on the surface, which may be useful when trekking through the snow or if your luck runs out while leaf-peeping and it starts to drizzle. However, they're still jeans, and they'll take longer to dry than pants made of something like a polyester blend, so seek shelter when it starts to pour.

Our tester says the stretch makes them very comfortable to wear while sitting and squatting, although the dark indigo can heat up pretty quickly in the sun. Of course, that also makes them the best travel jeans for cold weather. We dig the deep color of these pants. You'll want to wash them separately from any of your lighter travel pants, but we had no issues with color transfer. It’s easy to find the right fit with the company’s granular sizing system, which lets you choose the right waist for your body, though they only come in one length.

  • They’re super warm for cold-weather trips
  • These are the best women’s travel pants when you want to enjoy the great outdoors on a chilly day
  • While they only come in one 32 in (81 cm) length at the time of this review, they look cute cuffed
  • You may need to wash them a few times for the indigo to stop bleeding right off the bat

Levi's Classic Straight Fit Jeans

Some think the best travel pants for women are great jeans because they go anywhere and with anything. Whether going out for a drink or walking through the city, you can dress them up or down depending on the top you pair with it. While we don’t condone it, we even know people who wear them to the theater and weddings. So, if you’re going to pack a pair of jeans on your next trip, we like the heritage styling of the Levi's Classic Straight Fit Jeans. You can get them in various washes and colors, from Dark Horse to the lighter Indigo Deconstructed and Simply White. We also like that each size is available in short (28 in or 71 cm), medium (30 in or 76 cm), and long (32 in or 81 cm), so you can pick the length that works for you.

Nothing pinched or got hung up through our squat test, with the stretch of the cotton, polyester, and LYCRA material moving along with our tester as she bent and stretched. They’re also comfortable enough to sit in for hours, although the waist is not elastic, so you sometimes feel it press in. Unlike some all-cotton jeans, however, they come out of the wash soft, so you don’t have to break them in again.

  • They’re lighter and easier to pack than other jeans
  • Classic straight-leg jeans are always in style
  • Jeans with built-in stretch can lose shape over time
  • The waist is a bit stiff but not uncomfortable

The North Face Aphrodite 2.0 Capris

If you’re looking for the best travel capri pants for women, just stop here. Like the goddess these pants are named for, they’re pretty perfect. Our tester finds that the elastic waistband is comfortably stretchy and comfortable to sit in for hours, yet includes a drawstring for the perfect fit. The FlashDry XD fabric—mostly nylon with a bit of elastane added in—is soft and cool enough to hike in 80-degree weather. On the other hand, these capri pants are longer than shorts to protect you from sunburn or brushes from passing poisonous plants, and the fabric has a nicer aesthetic so we don’t mind wearing them to the pub down the street later the same night.

They’re only available in regular length, so where they hit on your calves will depend on your height, but the jogger-style elastic at the bottom isn’t too tight, so it doesn’t dig into your calves or get stuck on your legs when squatting. Plus, there’s a hidden zipper pocket to hold your phone. It’s seriously so hidden that it took our tester a few hours even to notice it was there, but she was happy once she did. The two other pockets are also usually deep enough to hold gear, though you risk things falling out depending on how adventurous you get. As for the wash test, all the dirt and sunscreen our tester got on them during a springtime hike came out with no issue, so these are the best women’s travel pants for those who plan to get off the beaten trail.

  • Dirt brushes easily off the material while you’re on a hike
  • These capris are light enough for summer hikes while protecting you from the sun and some bug bites
  • They have a casual, functional look that won’t work in all situations
  • The hidden zipper pocket may be hard to find, but it’s a good fit for your phone

Duluth Trading Company Flexpedition Slim Leg Pants

The Flexpedition pants are beloved by travelers who want durable gear that doesn’t look like it only belongs on the trail. Even with all the functionality that comes from side pockets, zip pockets, hand pockets, back pockets, and reinforced knees, these pants don’t scream cargo, and they’re not joggers, so we find they blend in more places than other options. You can choose the length that works for you, whether that’s a 29-in (73 cm), 31-in (78 cm), or 33-in (83.8 cm) inseam. Our tester wore a size 6 with the 29-in length and said they fit true to size. The waistband fits perfectly without digging in, and there is no back gap even for those with wider hips, although the slim legs are a bit tight if you have larger thighs.

Meanwhile, the nylon and spandex material is super smooth. It repels water if you get caught in the rain while hiking or splashed when gardening, yet you can go from adventure to a casual restaurant without changing your pants. Our tester appreciated the Flexpedition’s flexibility, finding it just as comfortable to crouch near the ground to plant spring flowers, curl up on the couch and read, and then go out to see family for dinner, all in the same pair of pants.

  • There are so many pockets
  • Dirt brushes off easily, and they dry quickly, too
  • You may feel the seams inside when you first put them on, but it goes away quickly
  • They may be a little warm because of the lining, but they’re quite breathable

Others We Considered

While we wanted to love everything, some of these travel pants just didn’t make the cut.

The Kuhl Weekendr Tight is good for those who like the feel of leggings but want something more durable. Yet it has extremely tight ankles, the zipper pockets are too small for a phone, and the legs are so tight that you may have to peel them off at the end of the day. However, we dig the interesting texture of the material and the breathable mesh panels, and our tester found them comfortable to wear for a day—once she got them on.

The Athleta Studio Wide Leg Pants are great for lounging around, just like the pants from Cozy Earth. However, the waistband is very loose, and putting anything in the pockets drags it down.

If we hadn’t found other hiking pants we like better, the Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Pant may have made the list. They’re made with a durable yet soft material and are as comfortable as joggers but without the ankle cuff. They’re also a bit short-waisted, and we struggled to figure out what to put in the zipper pocket on the left leg since it was too small for a phone.

As for the BALEAF Women’s Hiking Pants , we found the nylon and spandex material too flimsy and thin, and we found other joggers to be a much better fit for the list at the same price point.

So whether you’re getting ready to explore a new city, hike a new trail, or just want to lay around and relax, we think you’ll find the perfect women’s travel pants among the options on this list. And depending on your plans, you may want to pick up a few. Bon voyage!

A great pair of travel pants is a lot like a great friend: supportive without being restrictive and ready for any occasion. Look for breathable, moisture-wicking materials that won’t wrinkle in your suitcase or after hours on the airplane. A relaxed fit (or plenty of stretch if you opt for form-fitting leggings) is essential for freedom of movement on your adventures, while the ability to transition from day to evening wear with the right accessories is a major plus that cuts down on packing requirements.

Finding pants that meet all these criteria can seem difficult, which is why our team of travel experts took on the task of testing 40 of the most popular options currently on the market. We wore each pair in multiple scenarios from air travel to gym workouts for two weeks, then scored them for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value to choose our favorites. Our overall winner was the Stretch High-Rise Jogger from Lululemon, with its super soft material; loose, breathable fit; and useful pockets. Here are all the travel pants we loved.

Final Verdict

How we tested.

  • What to Look for in Travel Pants

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, lululemon high-rise jogger.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

Incredibly soft

Breathable and moisture-wicking

Versatile drawstring waistband

Some may prefer a slimmer cut

The Lululemon Stretch High-Rise Jogger may well be the perfect travel pant, with a classic, loose-fitting silhouette that we found supremely comfortable. Although they’re meant to be full-length, the tapered ankle means they look good even if they come up a little shorter on tall women, while the Luxtreme fabric’s combination of softness and stretchiness offers a slightly more elevated aesthetic than one might expect from a pair of joggers. Designed for breathability, the moisture-wicking fabric also handles temperature changes well (as proved when we tested them on a journey from chilly San Francisco to balmy Hawaii).

We loved the butter-soft waistband and the fact that while stretchy, these joggers also have a drawstring that you can cinch for a more tailored fit. The drawstring can be worn visibly or hidden inside for a more streamlined look. We also appreciated the extra-deep pockets, which held our phone securely even when sitting down. The pants also boast a hidden zipper pocket and card sleeve. Best of all, after multiple plane and car journeys (and three washes) the pants looked and felt brand new. Color choices are mostly muted and include kelly green, utility blue, and black.

Sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 | Materials: Nylon, Lycra, elastane, polyester

Best Lightweight

Outdoor voices relay wide leg pant.

Public Lands

Easy-on elasticated waistband

Great freedom of movement

Generous pockets

Sizing is not particularly accurate

The mid-rise Relay Wide Leg Pants from Outdoor Voices score sustainability points with their recycled polyester and spandex construction. We also found the combination to be incredibly comfortable, even on a journey from New York City to Florida that involved several different modes of transport and a significant temperature change. The pants are breathable and lightweight without feeling cheap, with a decent amount of stretch. We loved the branded, elasticated waistband—no more struggling with zippers, buttons, or drawstrings while rushing for a flight.

The elasticity also gave us full freedom of movement while performing squats as part of our testing process. As a result, we feel the pants would be ideal for everything from all-day walking tours to hiking, biking, and working out on vacation. Spacious pockets are another highlight, although we noticed that anything weighty did tend to pull the pants down a bit. They come in black, oceanic (blue), and gravel (beige). We recommend sizing down for the best fit.

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL | Materials: Recycled polyester, spandex

Best for Work

Quince 100 percent european linen pants.

  • Design 5 /5

Flattering, supportive shape

Wrinkle-resistant material

Elasticated for pull-on convenience

Multiple inseam lengths available in select colors only

Pockets are purely decorative

If you’re looking for pants that you can wear straight to a meeting after arriving at the airport, look no further than the Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants. They offer all the convenience of traditional travel pants, with an elasticated waistband for easy on and off and four-way-stretch fabric for complete freedom of movement. But, with their straight cut and thoughtful detailing (think belt loops and faux pockets on the front and back), they are also elegant enough for the boardroom.

We love that these pants are wrinkle-resistant, so you don’t need to waste time looking for an iron in your hotel room. And finding the right size is easy with three inseam lengths to choose from. Our tester wears an XL and has a pear-shaped body type. She loved the pants’ fit, finding them comfortable yet supportive with good tummy control (without feeling like shapewear). The only downside? We wish there were even more sizes to choose from and that all inseam lengths were available in every colorway.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL; 28-inch, 30-inch, 32-inch inseam | Materials: Rayon, nylon, spandex

Liverpool The Gia Glider Ankle Skinny Jean

Available in regular and tall lengths

Can be dressed up or down

Functioning pockets

Fit loosens slightly in between washes

Sometimes you have to pack light and one way to do that is to opt for pants that you can dress up or down for any occasion—like the Liverpool Los Angeles The Gia Gliders. Thicker and more supportive than leggings yet stretchier, softer, and more comfortable than regular jeans, these mid-rise jeggings come in two lengths and can be pulled on in seconds. We found them amazingly comfortable, even after full days in the office, running errands, or traveling across the city.

A faux zipper, a working button, and belt loops add style points. And, although the front pockets are too small to be very useful, we really appreciated the functionality of the full-size back pockets. We found that the pants offered a great range of movement (although we wouldn’t necessarily recommend them for your next yoga session!), and loved that they were thick enough never to have to worry about see-through areas. We did find that they bagged slightly after a few days’ wear, but also that they returned to their original shape after washing.

Sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16; regular, tall | Materials: Cotton, rayon, modal

Best With Pockets

Wayre jetsetter trouser.

Inclusive sizing

Incredibly versatile

Sustainable and ethically made

Not ideal for colder weather

If you prioritize pockets when looking for the perfect pair of pants, you’ll love the Wayre Jetsetter Trousers. They offer six functional pockets: four on the sides and back, each large enough for a phone or wallet; a card pocket; and a pickpocket-proof zippered pocket capable of accommodating a passport, cash, or keys. We also love the broad range of sizes offered, including standard and tall lengths. We loved the fit, finding them true to size with a waistband that wasn’t too tight or loose, but just right.

The style is wide-legged, with a cropped length and high-rise waist. They’re flexible enough to be comfy on the plane or when exploring your destination, but also smart enough to dress up come evening. We feel this versatility helps to justify the pants’ admittedly high price tag. They are made of durable Aire-Flex fabric, which is breathable, spill- and odor-proof, wrinkle-proof, and rated for UPF 30+ sun protection. It’s also bluesign-certified for sustainability points, and available in six gorgeous colors from bronze to rose water.

Sizes: 00, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 | Materials: Aire-Flex (rPET)

Most Comfortable

Vuori performance jogger.

  • Design 4 /5

Unbelievably soft fabric

Completely unrestricted movement

Can be tumble dried

Pockets aren’t particularly functional

Cropped style may not suit all tastes

Vuori Performance Joggers are made from DreamKnit fabric: a recycled polyester and elastane blend that’s impossibly soft and comfortable on long travel days. The pants are also breathable and moisture-wicking, with four-way stretch for full freedom of movement. The fit is slim yet relaxed, with a mid-rise waist and a tapered, cropped leg. We liked the adjustability of the drawstring waist and the fact that the fit remained consistent on every wear. Some of us that are tall weren't a big fan of the cropped style, though.

The joggers have two side pockets, which are deep enough to hold your phone or wallet. However, we found that anything bulky looked a little odd due to the pants’ slightly clingy style. Nevertheless, we believe the durable, quality fabric makes them well worth their high-end price tag and appreciated that unlike many of the pants on this list, ythese ones can be tumble dried without shrinking, stretching, or pilling. Colors range from black camo and navy to a dusky pink marsala heather.

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL | Materials: Recycled polyester, elastane

Best Leggings

Abercrombie & fitch ypb studiosoft legging.

Abercrombie & Fitch

  • Quality 4.5 /5

Flattering, sculpting design

No movement, even during high-impact activities

Relatively affordable

Lighter colors may show sweat when working out

The Abercrombie YPB StudioSoft 7/8 Length Leggings are made from a super soft, stretchy, and supportive nylon and elastane blend. We loved that they were like a second skin without making us feel like a stuffed sausage. The double-layer waistband compresses without being uncomfortable for a smoothing effect, while an ultra high-rise cut and sculpting, V-shaped back seaming help flatter your figure, whatever your body type. We felt that the leggings were pretty breathable, although some sweat did show through on the light color we tested.

One highlight for us was that the leggings stayed firmly in place with no sagging, looseness, or riding up no matter what we wore them for—including a high-impact gym workout. With completely unimpeded movement, we could see them performing well in any travel scenario, from sightseeing to adventure tours. There’s even a hidden interior waistband pocket for cards or keys. The leggings are the most affordable on this list and come in three inseam lengths (short, regular, and long) and four colors (lilac, oat, onyx, and mineral blue).

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL; short, regular, long | Materials: Nylon, elastane

Quince Ponte Straight Leg Pant

  • Durability 4.5 /5

Naturally heat regulating

Retain quality after multiple washes

Ethically sourced and produced

Unstructured fit loosens throughout the day

These beautiful linen pants from Quince are ethically woven from 100 percent European flax, making them naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and heat regulating. We found them so light and comfortable, it was easy to forget we were wearing pants at all. After trying them on, we would describe them as “just easy,” from putting them on to accessorizing them for different occasions. The linen is also very high quality, with no changes to its look or feel after several washes and enough thickness not to have to worry about visible underwear.

The fit is true to size, with a streamlined, straight-leg aesthetic that we feel is very versatile. The cropped legs hit just above the ankle, making them practical for navigating less-than-pristine airport bathrooms and cute when paired with sneakers, sandals, and flip-flops. If we could make one change? We’d add a drawstring to the elasticated waist to counteract the fact that it does stretch a little with extended wear. Finally, the pants have three functioning pockets and come in nine attractive colors.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL | Materials: European flax linen

TripSavvy / Jackie Napalan

Our overall favorite travel pants were the Stretch High-Rise Joggers from Lululemon, which we loved for their butter-soft comfort, stretch, and stylish appearance. For something a little more formal, choose Quince’s elegant yet eminently practical Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants .

Each pair of pants considered for this article went through the same real-life testing process. First, we unboxed and visually inspected the pants to gain an overall impression of material and construction quality. We tested the design and function of features, including pockets, zippers, buttons, and drawstrings; then put the pants on to perform a series of squats. This gave us an idea of their fit, breathability, and stretch.

Then, we wore each pair for at least four six-hour periods over two weeks. We wore them for traveling and everyday activities, including going to work, attending social events, and running errands. Finally, we washed the pants at least once according to the manufacturer’s care guidelines to see how well they held up. Each pair was scored from one to five for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value, with overall scores informing our category winners.

What to Look For in Women's Travel Pants

Comfort and flexibility are key when it comes to travel pants, which is why many of our favorites are made from technical blends featuring materials like nylon, elastane, spandex, polyester, and Lycra. These blends are typically breathable and moisture-wicking, too, making them easily able to handle temperature changes and great for active vacation pursuits such as hiking or sightseeing tours. Natural materials like cotton and linen are also comfy and breathable, although you’ll have to pack carefully to avoid too many wrinkles.

The travel pants that we tested for this article ranged in price from $22 to $228, but the most affordable pair that scored highly enough to be featured cost $70. This is a good illustration of the old adage, “you get what you pay for,” and if you want a pair of pants that tick all the boxes for comfort, versatility, and durability, then you should expect to pay somewhere around the $100 mark. Although this may seem expensive, consider that you’ll be able to wear the right pair of travel pants over and over again on your trip and hopefully for many years to come.

Above all, travel pants should be comfortable. You want full freedom of movement so you can run for that bus, take on that hiking trail, or dance the night away at that sidewalk taverna. You also want to be able to sit comfortably for several hours while traveling without experiencing any uncomfortable pinching or compression. This either means choosing pants with a relaxed fit, or, if you prefer form-fitting leggings, opting for ones with super soft material, plenty of stretch, and a waistband that stays firmly in place without being too tight.

Style is very personal and there’s no right or wrong when it comes to travel pants (or any other clothing). Whatever style you go for, though, we recommend choosing one with plenty of versatility. That means pants that you can dress up with heels and a blazer for a night out or formal business meeting, for example, or pair with sneakers and a T-shirt for more casual adventures during the day. This way, you’ll cut down on the number of different pants you need to take and save extra space in your suitcase for other items.

Although pockets aren’t necessarily essential if you’re the kind of person who always travels with a purse or backpack, they can be a very handy addition to your travel pants. After all, how much easier is it to whip your passport out of your pocket at security than having to rummage through your purse for the 99th time? Look for pockets that are deep enough to hold your valuables securely, even when you’re sitting down. The smartest travel pants may even have a zippered pocket or a hidden pocket in the waistband to dissuade pickpockets.

Whether for women or for men , the best pair of travel pants is the one you feel most comfortable in. Generally speaking, opt for soft, stretchy fabrics or pants with a relaxed fit that won’t feel too restrictive after hours in one position on the airplane. Pockets are ideal for keeping essentials like your wallet, phone, or passport handy, while breathable, sweat-wicking materials are great if you’re headed somewhere warm. Finally, choosing pants that you can wear for different scenarios (from daytime sightseeing or hiking to dining out in the evening) will help you pack smarter and lighter.

When it comes to the kind of casual pants listed in this article (leggings, joggers, lightweight travel pants), the best way to pack for wrinkle-free results is to fold the pants in half vertically, then roll them up tightly starting from the waistband. Bonus: This is also a great space saver, giving you more room in your suitcase for other clothes or souvenirs you pick up along the way.

Traveling During a Heat Wave: Tips and Precautions

It’s summer and the temperature is rising. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and your vacation dollars.

  • Share full article

An illustration of a heat wave and a summer street scene.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

Follow our updates for the latest on the heat wave across the U.S.

It’s set to be another scorching summer, with extreme and prolonged heat waves forecast across many parts of the United States and Europe.

The stifling conditions could impact millions of travelers and wreak havoc on vacations at some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Multiple heat-related deaths among tourists have been reported in Greece and Saudi Arabia in June following extreme temperatures in the Middle East and Aegean regions. Even those who have booked trips in traditionally cooler places may not be spared from the summer heat because of the growing unpredictability of weather patterns.

Here are some tips on how to manage high temperatures when traveling in a heat zone.

Check government guidance

If a heat wave has been forecast at your destination, check government websites before embarking on your trip to give yourself plenty of time to plan and adapt. In extreme temperatures, governments often issue heat advisories warning people to stay indoors during peak heat hours and provide resources to help residents and visitors stay cool. In the United States, the National Integrated Heat Health Information System has a website with information and tools to help prevent illness and death during excessive heat.

Tourist attractions also provide important updates about the conditions at the sights, including any scheduled closures, as a precaution against high temperatures. Some cities grappling with intensive heat, like Los Angeles, Miami, Athens and Melbourne, have assigned chief heat officers to prepare for the heat waves and lead emergency responses.

Avoid peak sun hours

It may seem obvious, but staying outdoors for prolonged periods of time when the sun is at its peak can put many at risk of heat exhaustion. Even if the temperature does not read exceptionally high, excessive dry heat or humidity can make an environment feel hotter than it is.

Travel advisers are adapting itineraries, putting sightseeing in the cooler early morning and evening hours and prebooking tickets for their clients so they do not have to wait in long lines.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

Hiking in the middle of the day is also not advised. On June 5, Dr. Michael Mosley, a British medical journalist, died during an afternoon hike in a 104-degree heat wave on the Greek Island of Symi. Four more tourists, including an American man , have recently died in Greece as temperatures have continued to soar.

“I would always recommend going hiking with a certified local guide and under no circumstances alone,” said Franziska Basso, a Milan-based travel adviser for Dreamsteam Exclusive Travel . “Of course, avoid the hottest hours of the day. Go hiking very early in the morning. And always stick to official hiking trails.”

In some European cities, including Paris and London, air conditioning is not a given, so check if it is available before booking a hotel, restaurant or transportation to ensure you have a cool place to find respite from the scorching heat. Visiting a museum or other indoor sightseeing is another good option, but expect crowds at peak hours.

Stay hydrated and take a siesta

Dehydration and heatstroke are among the most common causes of hospitalization during heat waves and can be prevented by staying hydrated and limiting alcohol consumption. During meals, consider eating foods like melons, cucumbers and celery as it can help to sustain hydration throughout the day. Always carry a water bottle with you and consider a parasol and portable fan to help keep you cool and shaded when outdoors.

While your itinerary may be packed with activities and tours, the heat can take a toll on stamina, so consider following the European siesta ritual by breaking up your day with a short nap.

“I’m telling my clients to adapt their itineraries and take advantage of the after-lunch siesta and then push their tours to later in the day when it’s cooler,” said Sarah Johnson, who owns Paper Ink & Passports Travel, a luxury travel company based in Pennsylvania. “There’s a reason they’ve been doing it in Spain and Italy for generations. Walking around in the midday heat and waiting in line could really hurt some people.”

Wear cool clothing

The National Weather Service recommends lightweight, loosefitting, light-colored clothing for outdoor use as it reflects heat and sunlight . Hats and sunscreen are also recommended to protect the face and scalp from harmful UV rays.

Just because it’s hot, doesn’t mean it will be dry. Heat waves can bring torrential rainfall, so be prepared.

“My biggest advice to travelers is to be prepared — for hot or cold, dry or wet weather since one never knows,” said Laurel Brunvoll, the owner of Unforgettable Trips , a Maryland-based travel agency. “Pack layers.”

Book a flexible trip

Even after taking all the right precautions, traveling in a heat wave can be miserable, making it worthwhile to make flexible bookings and purchase “cancel for any reason” travel insurance to have the option to postpone your trip to a cooler time.

Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. Travelers booking through a Sensible partner in the United States will be able to add daily protection that will allow them to claim reimbursement for a booking if the temperature exceeds a threshold that is usually set between 90 and 100 degrees.

“Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder, who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold.

The global spike in luxury handbags, shoes, and clothing sales could be coming to an end due in part to China's 'luxury shaming,' study finds

  • Global luxury goods sales growth will slow in 2024, per a new Bain & Company report.
  • The report cited China's economic uncertainties and rising outbound tourism as key factors.
  • "Luxury shaming" and price hikes without innovation could also contribute to sluggish sales growth.

Insider Today

The spike in the global sales of luxury goods could be coming to an end in 2024, and "luxury shaming" could be in part to blame.

A report published on June 18 by Bain & Company forecast that worldwide sales of personal luxury goods — which include high-end clothing, shoes, handbags, and beauty products — would grow at the slowest rate since 2020, when sales plummeted due to pandemic-related factors.

Related stories

If Bain's forecast pans out, it could be due in part to a slowdown in China. The report cited two factors in particular that are holding back sales in the Chinese market: "the revival of outbound tourism" and "weakening local demand caused by rising economic uncertainties."

As pandemic conditions have eased, more wealthy Chinese citizens have begun traveling internationally — allocating money to travel that they might otherwise have spent on luxury goods.

Additionally, economic uncertainty in China has brought about a phenomenon called "luxury shame" or "luxury shaming." With some Chinese citizens experiencing financial challenges , some higher-income people have been hesitant to flaunt their wealth with luxury goods. Bain said this phenomenon played out in the US during the Great Recession — and has impacted sales in China.

Bain partner Claudia D'Arpizio told The Associated Press that in addition to macroeconomic factors, luxury goods companies may also be to blame for the slowdown in sales.

She said some luxury goods companies have raised prices but not justified these hikes with sufficient innovation, leaving some consumers "upset and puzzled."

Moscow is the heart of Russia. It is the center of the political, cultural, and economic workings of the country. In Moscow one can visit the Kremlin, Red Square, Saint Basil's Cathedral, which has the famous onion-shaped domes, the Tystsin Botanical Garden, and more. Following is a list of what you may need to pack when traveling to Moscow.

Step 1 Obtain a Passport as well as a travel visa.

  • Summer temperatures average 65 °F (18 °C), or 18 Celsius. If you are travelling to Moscow during this time, bring lighter clothing and light jackets for the evening. It is important to remember that Russian casual wear is slightly more formal than U.S. or western casual clothing. Shorts and a T-shirt could be worn in usual walks, but not in museums, theaters, etc.
  • On the other hand, winters can be brutal in Moscow, with temperatures at 20 °F (−7 °C) or -6 Celsius. Moscow also experiences heavy snow fall, so when travelling to Moscow during the winter be sure to pack boots, heavy coats, gloves, and scarves and hats.
  • Spring in Moscow is usually cold and wet, so bring umbrellas and keep heavy coats and gloves on hand just in case. Fall clothing is much the same. If you are visiting closer to December, bring heavier coats and clothing.

Step 4 Bring skating equipment.

What to Wear in Moscow in Winter

Written By: Julia K

Going to Moscow for the holidays? You’re in luck!

Why? Because there are no lines to the major tourist spots, there are fewer people in general, and you get the best prices. You can also get bragging rights that you have visited Moscow, Russia during its famous winter.

Winter in Russia lasts about five months. It gets snowy and cold going into negative Celsius at the end of October beginning November. Spring begins in mid-March and lasts till mid-May. Summers are hot and sometimes humid.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating your winter  travel capsule wardrobe , which should fit in your suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

The first thing to know as you plan what to wear in Moscow in winter is how to pack for the weather.

Read these guides to get started, then read the specific details below for outfit ideas for various activities in Moscow:

  • How to Pack for Cold Weather
  • How to Stay Warm in Cold Weather (without the bulk)
  • Extreme Cold Weather Clothing Strategies
  • The Secret to Packing Light in Winter

Local women look their best anywhere and everywhere they go. Do pack nicer items and bring your makeup, too .  The following suggestions are based on a two week itinerary and contain three to four looks for the following activities:

  • museums, walking around,
  • going to a theater or ballet,
  • going out to a restaurant and club, or
  • getting invited to a random dinner at someone’s apartment, because it can happen!
Traveling to other parts of the country? Read this guide on what to wear in Russia !

Walking around the downtown area

Going to Moscow is a very unique experience. Walking around Red Square , New and Old Arbat, and visiting the ice skating rink in VDNH or Gorky Park will require warm attire.

Bring a long, warm winter coat that goes to your knees and has an attached hood. Choose a down jacket like these for optimal warmth.  Russian women love fur coats–not just as a fashion statement but due to their functionality in the cold.

Add warm winter accessories such as a big, warm blanket scarf that you can also use as a hood. Don’t forget a warm hat, thermal underwear , and mittens (not gloves).

Find out why thermal underwear for women is absolutely essential for cold weather travel!

As you plan what to wear in Moscow in winter be prepared for icy conditions; bring comfortable shoes with a thick sole that are appropriate for the snow and slush. Here are a few warm waterproof leather boots  suggested by our readers. Don’t forget to wear them with warm wool socks !

General tip: wearing layers will give you more freedom in the outside-inside situation. It gets very warm in the subway underground and inside some buildings, compared to the cold outdoors.

It’s important to note that during winter, the temperature varies from -2°C/28°F to -28°C/-18°F, which is exceptionally cold! The average is around -15°C / 5°F.

The one easy way to tell a tourist from a local is if they’re wearing heels and makeup. Generally speaking,  Moscow ladies take fashion, makeup, hair, and style very seriously. Bring your best attire and a splash of bling for a bit of glam.

A simple set of stud earrings can easily elevate an outfit from drab to chic. From outdoor adventures to city breaks, wear a set like  this for any trip!

Going to a museum

When planning what to wear In Moscow in winter (or anytime), keep in mind that sloppy attire is frowned upon. While looking your best when traveling is always a given, you might be refused service or be simply ignored in certain places. People may treat you differently depending on how you dress.

To a museum, wear dark denim, boots or booties, a  crossbody purse , jacket, and a shirt. Don’t forget to do your makeup and hair.

Many places may require you to check your coat so you should still have the appropriate layers to wear inside without feeling uncomfortably warm or cold. Checking your coat also allows you to stay warm when you’re outdoors but move freely indoors.

Learn how to layer clothes !

Places to visit are Diamond Fund , Red Square, the  Gum department store (pronounced like goom), and  Armoury Chamber , Tsentral’ny Dom Khudozhnika ,  Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov Gallery .

To a theater or ballet

Winter is the time to visit the world famous Bolshoi Theater. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, then The Nutcracker is the one to see! I would advise getting there one hour early, order some champagne and sandwiches, and check out the crowd. There are plenty of other theaters that are not as famous but equally as good.

Floor length gowns aren’t necessary or practical, so bring a cocktail dress, shoes, evening clutch, jewelry, and do your makeup and hair. Tip: gorgeous jewelry can dress up a versatile LBD.

Do not wear denim to an opera or ballet!

If you are a guest in someone’s house

Russians do like to invite people into their homes. Dress modestly but with great attention to detail as a well dressed appearance is always appreciated. You can wear dark denim jeans, a sweater, jewelry, a nice bag, and boots.

Please remember to always take off your shoes when in someone’s house. It is considered rude to walk in street shoes at home. So pack your party socks or tights!

Moscow is a hub of amazing places to eat. One thing’s for sure–you’ll never be hungry. It caters to all budgets and styles. If you’re eating on a budget, then your daytime attire will suit you perfectly.

If you plan to dine at nice restaurants or visit clubs, wear a  cocktail dress, black tights, heels, and a clutch. Alternatively, wear leather pants with a flattering long sleeve blouse and jewelry.

General tip : If you plan on dining out, do make a reservation on Fridays and weekends. Otherwise there are plenty of places to choose from. Local favorites include Chaihana , Valenok , Ludi Kak Ludi and any cafe in Kitai Gorod.

Moscow is a non-stop hub of an always-moving machine. You should definitely go and enjoy yourself even during winter! A post on what to wear in Moscow during summer is coming up soon. Stay tuned!

Traveling to Moscow end of March and first of April. Do women wear fur coats at this time of year? If yes, does the colorof the fur matter. Would it be lighter coats–snow leopard, silver saga fox or is a dark coat of fake cur acceptable? Or would a puffer coat be advisable with a beanie with fox fur pompom? Or would a wool full length cap be appropriate? Thanks

Hi Leslie, fur coats are a common fashion style, because they keep you toasty and warm, and look fantastic. It would depend on the temperatures, I would recommend that you check the weather forecast closer to your departure dates to ensue you have packed the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Ninotchka

I’m a girl who has only lived in warm weather. I have never experienced winter like in moscow. I have dumb questions about shoes and attire. If going to the ballet with heels, do you bring your boots to walk outside and inside?

Also, can you wear winter snow boots inside a university for a long time? I bought the sorels Joan of arctic and winter carnivals. Will they be too hot for inside? Do I need to bring extra pair of shoes?

Hi Ninotchka, thank you for your question. Let me look into this for you! 🙂

Julie

Would love to see a packing list for a river cruise to Russia in the spring!!

alex

Will keep it in mind for a future post!

Alanna Wargula

Thanks so much for this article! It is so hard to find advice for winter/snowy travel. It is still about layering! Leggings under my skinny jeans. I wear my winter boots (Sorel with fur trim) on the plane, and my marmot long “down defender” water resistant coat Squishes down in the packing cubes.

alex

Thanks for sharing Alanna! Glad you found this article helpful!

Moscow What To Pack

Moscow is the capital of Russia. In preparation for your visit, pack plenty of warm clothes, a camera, and comfortable shoes.

No matter what you have planned for your Moscow adventure, these luggage options are ideal for a short or long-term stay.

Warm clothes.

Moscow, like most of Russia, can get quite cold, especially in the winter months. Travelers who are new to the city, especially those who hail from warmer climates, should bring a heavy coat, gloves, hats, and warm socks. In the weeks leading up to your trip, check the weather forecasts to get a sense of the temperatures you can expect during your stay.

Clothes to Pack

  • Dress Shirts
  • Casual Shirts
  • Sweatshirts
  • Laundry Kit
  • Leisure Shoes
  • Hiking Boots
  • Dress Shoes
  • Collapsible Tote

Moscow is home to the Kremlin, the seat of the country’s government. The city is also the site of historic churches, museums, and monuments. Make sure you pack a camera, but pay attention to the signs, especially outside churches and government buildings. If you’re told you can’t take pictures, don’t. The local police won’t hestitate to confiscate your camera if they catch you breaking the rules.

Electronics to Pack

  • Laptop/Tablet
  • Electronics Chargers
  • Travel Adapter
  • Film/Memory Card
  • Electric Toothbrush

Comfortable Shoes

Moscow, like most capital cities, requires visitors to do a fair amount of walking. Chances are, you’ll spend most of your days heading from one area of the city to another. This can put a lot of strain on your feet. To prevent blisters and pain, pack a pair of comfortable shoes. Your feet will thank you.

Toiletries and medicine.

Few things are worse than arriving in a city halfway around the world only to realize that you forgot your medication. Moscow has plenty of clinics and hospitals that you can go to in an emergency, but it may take some time to fill a prescription, especially if it’s something that requires your doctor’s permission. To avoid a headache while in Moscow, double and triple check that you have your medications before you leave.

Moscow is a modern, industralized city, but the people there may not share your preferences for toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, and the like. When packing your luggage, make room for toiletries. You can always pick up more while you’re there, but it’s nice to know you have what you need to take care of your personal hygenie while abroad.

Toiletries to Pack

  • Dental Floss
  • Conditioner
  • Styling Tools
  • Facial Cleanser
  • Face Lotion
  • Moisturizer
  • Contact Lenses
  • Contact Solution
  • Shaving Supplies
  • Makeup Remover
  • Menstrual Products
