Hunting in zimbabwe - overview.

When  hunting in Zimbabwe , the main area that we hunt in is known as the Naivasha area.

It borders the local indigenous communities and has a 33.5 kilometre (20 mile) unfenced boundary with The  Gona Re Zhou National Park .  This large concession is approximately 250 000 acres. It is completely wild and has no one living in it. These free-roaming areas for wildlife attracts the true hunters who enjoy the experience of true, fair chase hunting.

We also hunt leopard a little further South, towards the direction of Bulawayo. When hunting in Zimbabwe we  hunt dangerous game such as Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Hippo, Crocodile and Leopard. Zimbabwe offers probably the best variety of  Big Game animals in Africa , along with a wide variety of other animals.

Buffalo Trails Safaris was founded in 2005 by Jannie Meyer. Jannie grew up on Eaglemont Ranch in the Lowveld of Zimbabwe, where his father J P S Meyer operated hunting safaris. Whenever the opportunity arose, Jannie eagerly accompanied his father on hunts and as a result, some of our clients today still remember Jannie as a young boy.

After gaining his full Professional Hunters License in 2003 and working with his father for a few years, Jannie wanted to carve his own identity within the industry. He decided to go it alone, and in 2005 Buffalo Trails Safaris began operating.

Buffalo Trails Safaris is passionate about hunting, conservation and creating memories of a lifetime for all of their clients. In such a competitive environment it continues to go from strength to strength through the commitment of its team to ethical hunting and the loyalty of previous clients who return time after time.

Rosslyn Safaris is one of the longest running hunting safari companies in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa – operating since 1969. Owned by Peter Johnstone, a founding member of the hunting industry in Zimbabwe, we offer both bow and rifle hunting for leopard, sable and plains game in their natural habitat. Rosslyn Safaris hunts out of Cawston Block, which is a dedicated safari area of 32,000 acres just north of Bulawayo. When it was first bought in the late 1980’s, game numbers were low. Intensive management, appropriate utilisation of natural resources, and the introduction of new bloodlines for a number of species effected a long lasting transformation in a land naturally suited to wildlife.

The result is a superb safari area with possibly the largest privately owned free ranging herds of sable and tsessebe in Zimbabwe. Located at the junction of the Turgwe and Save rivers in Zimbabwe’s south-east Lowveld,  HUMANI is the very epi-centre of the renowned  Save Conservancy,  encompassing over 130 000 acres of premier big game/plains game country.  Striking in its vegetative diversity, Humani comprises dense rive-rine dominated by towering hardwood trees,  vast mopani and fever tree forests, open plains (maparis) and broken hill country.  These habitats are populated by abundant and equally diverse game populations –  the big five and an impressive array of plains game species.  Historically famed for its monster leopards and spiral-horned antelope,  over the past 20 years Humani has also earned a reputation for producing large-maned lions, heavy ivory and big bossed buffalo bulls.

Whether you are on your first safari and on tracks of a Kudu bull in Zimbabwe, stalking an elusive  Bongo in a Cameroon rain forest or sizing up an Elephant bull in thick scrub at 20 yards, its an exciting, unique experience that will live in your memories forever. Classic African Hunting offers fair chase, free range hunting in large concessions in both Cameroon and Zimbabwe.  The areas in which we hunt vary from the mixed woodland, rolling hills and vleis of Matetsi to the thick tropical rain forests and open savannahs of Cameroon.  All the areas we hunt have been carefully selected through many years of travel, hunting experience, knowledge of the areas, wildlife populations and trophy quality.  From this hands on expertise we are able to tailor make safaris to the hunter's specific requirements and needs to ensure a memorable hunting experience. Hunting in 2 countries with varied habitats also enables us to offer the hunting of nearly 60 species. 

Since the mid 1800's the  wild , remote  western area of Zimbabwe has attracted hunters and explorers such as Baines , Selous , Oates and Barbe. The early trading post of Pandamatenga (located on the south western boundary of our hunting area) was a hot spot for  trading in ostrich feathers, ivory, hides and general goods.  It was also  a base from which to hunt the surrounding areas and visit the Victoria Falls.  In those early times the Victoria Falls was a 3 day walk from Pandamatenga. 

It is in this prime area of Zimbabwe that we hunt the world famous Matesti Safari Area ( Unit 2 ) and the adjoining Forestry concession of Kazuma making up an area of just on 120 000 acres .  Both areas offer great wildlife numbers, varied habitats , big open skies and the incredible free range hunting experience of big game safaris as it was in the years gone by. Both areas annually produce exceptional Elephant, Lion, Leopard and Sable trophies.

Cameroon is a newly discovered wild frontier for the serious sports hunter.  We offer hunts in the forests of east and in the northern  savannah areas .  Many top class trophies are taken from here every year.

AFRICAN HUNTS AND ADVENTURES HUNTING SAFARIS

AFRICAN HUNTS AND ADVENTURES HUNTING SAFARIS are situated in the north western part of Zimbabwe. Hunting safaris are conducted by fully licensed & experienced professional hunters within 30 000 hectares of prime range land which is on the periphery of the world famous Hwange National Park & also adjoins the famous Ngamo-Sikumi Forests .

The hunting area includes the wildlife rich Sikumi Vlei which stretches for approximately 6 kilometers on the property, and is abound with big elephant bulls, buffalo, leopard and lion , as well as a large variety of plains game, particularly sable, eland, zebra and small nocturnal animals. We also offer leopard hunting with hounds and bird shooting safaris.

Safari areas

The area consists of generally flat woodland and grassy plains and is serviced by a permanent camp that has six thatched chalets with en suite bathrooms and toilets. In addition, we also offer game drives, walking safaris and wilderness trails into neighboring Hwange National Park .

Our hunting season runs from April to November. It is advisable to bring sweaters and warm wind proof jackets as well as cool light weight hunting clothes as nights and early morning can be cold. Comfortable footwear, broad-brimmed hats, sunglasses et cetera are essential.

NOTE : No camouflage pattern clothing is allowed .

It is important that both the client and their Professional Hunter are proud of the way in which a hunt is conducted and the manner in which any animal is killed, hunting is done on a “fair chase” basis with the emphasis of the stalk based on tracking the old fashioned way. Africa is renowned for excellent trophy quality but it is the thrill of the chase that should be the motivation to go on safari. Our name says it all: professional, personalised, real “old school” safaris.

At Zimbabwe’s dawn in 1980 our beloved country was presented with a golden opportunity of peace with unfathomable potential for growth and development – in particular in the agriculture and tourism sectors. Frik Muller(Snr) recognised the potential for developing his farm in the Midlands Province for both.

Ngezi Safaris was established in 1982 as the 12th registered Safari Company in Zimbabwe. Using his plains-game-rich farm as the core of operations, Frik(Snr) expanded Ngezi Safaris’ operations rapidly to couple Big Game safaris in Campfire and Safari Areas with highly successful ranch hunts.

His sons Louis and Frik(Jnr) took over the company in 1998, and continued its expansion and retention of the highest of standards seeing many happy clients returning time and again.

After 20 years of developing the ranch with dams, roads and fences to manage game populations, Ngezi Safaris found itself without a home after the controversial land redistribution program rolled out at the turn of the millennium.

Facing this uncertainty the Mullers merged Ngezi Safaris with another safari operation and took its name – Pro Safaris Africa – securing their position in the industry.

Since 2003 Pro Safaris Africa has been hunting throughout Zimbabwe. We focus on custom made safaris, specializing in elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, leopard and plains-game hunts. We are particularly proud of our high success rate with leopard hunts and are one of the biggest leopard outfitters in Africa by numbers and success.

10 years ago, in partnership with Walker Watson Safaris, Pro Safaris Africa secured the exclusive 10 year lease to Rifa Safari Area – undoubtedly one of the best free-range hunting conservation areas in Africa. Those of you lucky enough to have visited Rifa will undoubtedly agree that the loss of Rifa as a hunting area is great.

Our growth in the industry and as a company has put us in a position whereby our active training program has a permanent apprentice hunter on staff at all times. Many of the full license graduates of our tutelage are still with the company today, including Zimbabwe’s first Fully Licensed lady PH who fills the niche role of guiding hunter’s wives and independent huntresses who are not comfortable with a male PH.

The Mullers, Pro Safaris Africa and our fine professional hunting team now enter a new chapter in our legacy in Africa – one we are both excited about and thrilled to share with past and new safari adventurers, while we continue to strive to keep the “Pro” in Professional Hunting in Africa.

When we started our adventure in safaris 35 years ago – hunting was the domain of only hardened hunters.

Over time we have seen the dynamics change to where it is almost impossible to place hunters in one single box. Zimbabwean professional hunters(PHs) need no introduction as the best trained in Africa and with more than 125 years of shared experience between our directors and 5 permanent PHs, at Pro Safaris Africa we are positioned at the head of the pack. As members of the Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association – all our PHs are honour-bound to conduct safaris in a safe, ethical and sustainable manner. ZIMBABWE HUNTING

 Can only be described as the best hunting destination in Africa of that fact there is no doubt in our minds having personally hunted every African county open to hunting including and south of Tanzania. Zimbabwe remains the #1 big game hunting destination offer we have for our clients. 

Zimbabwe offers only free range/fair chase hunting with no fences  at all in any of our offered concession areas. The areas we offer are concession areas that are directly adjoined, open and unfenced to National Parks that serve as feeder Parks to the hunting areas. These hunting areas are owned by either the Zimbabwean Government or the local Communities that lease the land to the local Operators whom we represent.

We are not a South African company operating in Zimbabwe, we are specialist/veteran hunting agents that books hunts for Zimbabwean Professional Hunters and Zimbabwean Operator companies that are in the same group of companies as JWK Safaris, a hunt consortium.

Our Zimbabwean concessions are fantastic for all big game hunts, these are serious hunter hunts in big game country. We book on average 60 big game hunters a year in Zimbabwe and have done so for some years now. This Cape Buffalo hunting package in Zimbabwe features 10 Days walk and stalk hunting in a Zimbabwe Lowveld Reserve!  The herd size in this reserve is over 300 strong.  You can be sure of hunting a hard-bossed cape buffalo bull or dugga boy.  This hunt is with one of Zimbabwe’s top PH’s and in one of the most renowned  classic reserves of 20,000 hectares.   This is an excellent opportunity to hunt a large herd with a great PH in a comfortable camp.  This lush reserve is less than 3 hours from Bulawayo and easily accessible by road transfer with our PH.   Additional  plains game and other dangerous game species available as an add-on.

ANTI-POACHING

HHK Safaris implements and funds anti-poaching initiatives throughout our Safari Concessions. Illegal hunting is rife in Zimbabwe and a percentage of the funds from Trophy Hunting go towards managing the situation on ground. Our anti-poaching units consist of qualified rangers kitted with the relevant gear and vehicles for patrol.

HOW HUNTING GIVES BACK TO ZIMBABWE

AID FOR COMMUNITIES

A portion of Trophy Hunting revenue goes to the Council of areas within Rural District  Councils (RDC's) . This money goes towards building up rural communities and supporting locals. The meat harvested from hunting is distributed between Wards within the area which aids with food security.

AID FOR CONSERVATION

Hunting revenue goes back into Conservation of the Safari areas in RDC's and National  Parks . This money aids with keeping the area safe, clean and preserving the fauna and flora altogether. 

Hunting in Zimbabwe is on a sustainable use basis with quotas issued for each concession. Quotas for protected species such as elephant, leopard, and crocodile are granted by CITES annually.
