How does Aida compare to Celebrity, RCL, or Princess

Cool Cruiser

With the rumors of some Aida sailings out of Baltimore in the future, I

would appreciate any objective info about how this line compares to

the big three listed in the title.

How are the amenities, the food, the entertainment, and the staffs?

The only thing I have been able to ascertain is that it is German, has no

dining room, per se, and is very informal in dress/ attitude. any other insight would be great to hear.

I have made cruises with Celebrity, Holland America, The Royal Viking Sun and - three times - with different AIDA ships (basically, the AIDAs are very similar to each other).

Here are the differences:

- AIDA has 99% German-speaking passengers. Although virtually everybody of the staff is speaking English (many speak Engllish only, not German), the announcements and the entertainment program are in German.

- AIDA has no dining room, but several buffet-style restaurants with complimentary beer and wine plus several à-la-carte restaurants where you pay both for food and drinks.

- Entertainment on the AIDA ships is weak. They do not have the Broadway-style shows which are typical for American cruise ships. Instead, they have those pool-parties which are discotheque-style dancing parties.

- Health club and wellness are high-standard, saunas are coed and nude.

- The organized tours are with German-speaking guides.

Otherwise, the cruising experience is similar.

We have seen many Aida ships in Palma, my partner is fluent in German but I can only get away with a little bit. I understand more of what I hear than I can speak.

I really want to try different ships but would need to improve my german first

just saw this ship ( Aida luna) in port of Miami first time, interesting and curious about german only entertainment.
  • 1 year later...

sorry; duplicate post.

Interesting; thanks. We've seen AIDA ships in ports with us, but other than realizing they aren't terribly huge ships (which is a plus to me) and that everyone coming off of them appear to be German, I didn't know a thing about them. I didn't realize any ship did not have a dining room with service - interesting!

Also interesting is someone's post that there are rumors of Aida ships sailing out of Baltimore. That would be nice, given that only RCL and Carnival are the choices now. However, I think I'll have to pass on a German ship! I know some German, but not enough to understand or converse without some difficulty! I also don't think I'd like to do buffet 3 times a day....

I will experience the differences between AIDA compared to Royal Caribbean in a few weeks, when I'm on my first cruise with the Splendour of the seas departing from Venice...

As I cruised with AIDA ships several times all I can say is that I enjoyed AIDA very much. There is always a relaxing and easy atmosphere on board. Buffet restaurants are included, there are specialty restaurants with service, you have to pay extra.

Of course personnel is part German, part International, so English speaking should not be a serious matter.

Although I love cruising with AIDA I wanted to try another cruise line, so I'm excited to get on board of an "American" ship.

Embarking in 22 days:)

I cruised with AIDA many times and it was fantasitic :). I think cruising AIDA is different from cruising with "American ships". The buffet style restaurants are very different from the buffet restaurants on American ships. I think there is a larger variety of food. Have a look at the AIDA homepage: http://www.aida.de/kreuzfahrt/schiffe/aidaluna/360-grad-rundgang-aidaluna.26067.html So you can have a look at one of three buffet restaurants on AIDAluna. You should understand a little bit of German because everything is in German. Speaking shouldn't be a problem. Most of the younger germans speak English fluently so you will not have any problems to get in contact. I met some guys from GB on AIDA and we had much fun together.

In August I am going to try Carnival. Let's see how it works for me but the Board program seems to be likewise. I will report.

Perhaps you are intersted in a shiptour on board of AIDAluna:

It's a beautiful and colourful ship :)

Never been on AIDA, but when we were next to one in some port, I saw they had hammocks on the balconies!!!

Now that is something I could live with, spending my day at sea in a hammock! :)

Also, they seemed to have bikes and segways etc onboard, for use in ports.

You can do several bike tours: soft tours or active tours through the citys or along the coasts. Segway tours are also available. They also have e-bikes for Seniors. The hammoks are fantastic but there is no room service on board. No Problem for me, I don`t need it.

Here`s a picture of the hammock. It is really nice.

Aida is low class cruising for a high price! Never ever I would step a foot on that ships! They were good at the beginning, but now worst then Costa in Aida style. Not good for English speakers at all, uncomfortable, no luxury, bad food!

Unless you are German, stay away. I was once on smaller Cunard(Brit), ship. It just was not my cup of tea. Such a variety of American cruiser oriented ships to try.

Very helpful thread - thank you.

German family are trying to convince us that AIDA is the best there is in europe. May have to look into it a little further :)

From what I understand and what my friends told me AIDA is different than US mass market with own pluses and minuses. I only saw pictures of buffet and it looks terrific. So many varieties of cheese, meats, sausages. Lobsters and other seafood. Also there is a set of great saunas dry and wet. Entertainment is fine. Shorter shows, but fine.

Here are some videos for those who have got problems to navigate the german website:

Have fun :)

Did lots of cruises on AIDA´s ships, so here is my opinion:

very good buffet meals with an awsome variety of very good quality food

buffet restaurants have complementary beverages including alcohol

I like the style of the cabins

great wellness area

part of the entertainment is very good quality

on board language is German (good if you know German well)

lots of different on board entertainment either included or for rather small extra fees

lots of different "motto parties"

tips are included in the price also for drinks at the bars

prices at the bars are not too high

with many ships they cover lots of different routes

they offer bike tours in almost every port and segway tours in some ports

they have their own diving lessons on board

very often they have special price offers; you sometimes get a cruise for less than 100 € per day (tips and beverages in restaurants included)

discounts for youngsters up to 24 years

reasonably priced drinks passes available

kids travel free or for a very low charge in their parent´s cabin and don´t even have to pay for extra tips

discount for pre-booked shore excursions and some on board extras

it sometimes feels crowded especially on sea days with bad weather as there is less space per passenger as on other cruise lines

cabins are quite small (14 qm most cabins)

part of the entertainment is not good quality

their bigger ships don´t have a real theater, from most seats at the so-called Theatrium you don´t have good view to the stage

no real pool on the bigger ships

on board language and all information is German (not good if you don´t know German well); only safety anouncements are also in English

you can avoid some of the :( items by:

booking a balcony cabin or Suite

dine in specialty restaurants

Show up early for Theatrium entertainment and grab a seat on deck 9 in the front rows

if you are not in a balcony cabin or Suite: pay for the "Wellnes Oase" on sea days (20-25 € per day and only 60 passengers per day are allowed in)

some more details which are neutral to me and it depends on your personal attitude if you like it:

It´s Freestyle cruising. No formal nights, no captain´s dinner or things like that. No Dress code except no beach wear in the restaurants and men are asked to wear long pants for dinner.

All included restaurants are buffet except "Brauhaus" (beer garden style) on some of the larger ships (meals are included but beverages have to be paid).

Ships with a "Brauhaus" produce their own beer and you can do a brewery tour on board.

Cabin service once a day. Towels for use on the pool deck or a beach are provided for a deposit. You get your money back upon return of the towel.

As with all cruise lines, Internet access is quite expensive. But on the larger ships you get your own email account and can send/receive emails for 0,50 €. You get the email address with your travel documents and can arrange your mails being forwarded from your home account to the ship.

On the larger ships they provide a bath robe for use on the ship.

Every time the ship leaves a port this event is celebrated with their own port leaving music.

The ships are decorated with a large kissing mouth on their front as if the ship is kissing the sea.

Crew are allowed to mix with passengers on the public areas while not on duty.

They produce their own TV Show on board.

They offer diving and gulf for shore excursions.

For active People they offer lots of sports activities on board such as volleyball.

Sail away music is wonderful.

Although I might get flamed for the following and without making my post 10 pages, I would like to express that after many RCCL cruises I finally did one (my first and last one) Aida cruise on AidaBlu (Med) as I have heard soooo often on my RCCL cruises and on land that Aida is good or even best.

On the ship we have experienced a loyalty to Aida of 95% of the people we met. Even cold food was named good as it has this brilliant variety that you can get nowhere.

If you love American ships and you don't ahere to German (as a language on a ship) don't do Aida.

  • Excursions VERY good. A+++. Really loved them. Very good tours. All in German, with highly motivated guides, all well educated. Wireless hotspot with FOC internet in bussed... RCCL is much weaker here.
  • Route / Stops Very well picked. Many of Aida's routes RCCL does not do yet.
  • Ship Small, had trouble to find my way, often felt to be on a one-way-or dead end street. Hard to find floor signs. I have been on Oasis class 3 times and there it was very easy. I'm spoilt by RCCL. On Aida my mom (74), who was also on Oasis already, did often end up somewhere wrong. Much to little amount of public toilets. Reception: Mid of the 'queue' (if you want to call this a queue) ends in front of the elevators. Cabins are nice coloured though. NEVER saw our cabin attendant.
  • Food Good variety. FOC beer and wine during dinner. Loved the burger place. Very good food in there and very friendly staff. In my one week all our food (and I had many in any restaurant that was included) was in max. lukewarm to cold, except in the burger place. Filet steaks were cooked to be dry and were served once half cold. Nice remarks and requests from us, e.g. requesting for warm fried egg, were in max. answered grumbling. Requests were not taken but I was asked to provide online feedback myself after the cruise. And believe me, we were really trying to be polite. There are often many times during the day you can't get ANYTHING to eat nor drink on the ship that you don't have to pay for. No coffee served 24/7 FOC. Could post more ...
  • Pool site The biggest pool was smaller than a bigger sized RCCL whirl pool. In ANY whirlpool on the ship I was not able to sit with my feet stretched (I'm 6 foot 2) leading me to issue with my feet (under water, bubbles) touching somebody else in areas I don't want to ... Nude area: Big nude area, taking many of the little pool area space. So called SPA area you have to pre-book and pay. Don't even start to compare this with BOS or Oasis solarium nor think of the entire pool deck comparison.
  • Entertainment Anytime bar had nice disco music. Biergarden (own beer brewed on ship) had 2 nice day music session during our 1 week, felt like in Spring break on those occasions/days. Really nice. Also the staff cocktail mix 1h on the pool site was nice. Theatre in size is smaller than the shows of RCCL being done in the atrium of the ships. Shows are weak to horrible. 1 'big' show per day ... which some were even distressing. E.g. one night the show of the day was two performers were doing adhoc-theatre with no 100% story line, both playing drunk people ... this was even transmitted to the pool site in loud sound ... even the Aida fans were requesting to have the sound turned off. Captain was almost invisible. His introduction was weakly done poolside. After half of our trip we stopped participating in most entertainment.

just did my first mini-cruise on Aida which they offer out of Palma as one night cruises to nowhere.

I have previously been on RCCL, Holland America, Costa, NCL.

I am glad i did the mini cruise so now i know that i wont book Aida again.

My mini-review:

- Reasonable prices at the bar

- free style cruising

- good shops with quality goods

- very friendly and approachable european crew

- free beer / wine / coffee in the restaurants

- didnt like the interior design, some areas appeared very plasticky to me (however, this is really subjective)

- No traditional restaurant, only buffet (i dont mind a buffet except for dinners where i really like to be served)

- Buffet food variety was a bit limited, and the 'italian' style restaurant really didnt have much italian choices except for a pizza and some pasta.

- In all fairness, the dishes at the buffet were prepared well, however they were luke-warm at best, which is a shame

- pools were really the smallest i've ever seen on a cruise ship

- asian crew was not trained well, they were not attentive, didnt greet and you could tell some didnt enjoy their work - we were astonished as normally these guys are the nicest people amongst the crew

everything kinda reminded me of a european 3 star hotel, it was not a feeling of luxary but reminded me more of what they usually call 'value'.

Again, your milage may vary, as they say ...

Costa Luminosa Cruise Ship Review

As she made her inaugural arrival into Southampton, AIDA Cruises brand new  AIDAprima glistened in the early morning sun. Just a few hours later and I would be onboard, along with a small group of British journalists and photographers. We were some of the first British people to visit what is predominantly a German-exclusive cruise ship. As a result of this, I know many people are curious about the AIDA brand and the facilities onboard its ships, from the perspective of a British cruiser. AIDAprima  is the first in the line’s Hyperion Class, running off of LNG fuel while in port, and a sulphur fuel when sailing.

The first thing guests see when boarding is the spectacular Theatrium . An AIDA tradition since  AIDAdiva  in 2007, the theatre is combined with the atrium, creating a bright, and spacious three-tiered circular venue in the centre of the ship. Unlike most ships where the theatre is often unused during the day, apart from rehearsals, on  AIDAprima it is a great place to sit and relax during the day, especially with the large floor-to-ceiling windows. The theatre itself is a technological wonder. A giant LED globe is suspended from the ceiling, as well as two sophisticated tracks on the ceiling used for moving aerial dancers around the large space and out into the audience! The stage can also be raised and lowered in multiple different ways.

aida princess cruise ship

Vinothek is the dedicated wine bar onboard as is a great place to relax in a quiet and intimate atmosphere, before heading for the theatre show or a meal in the nearby Buffalo Steak House. A specialty  Sushi Bar  is also located just a short distance away from the Theatrium.

aida princess cruise ship

Located at the front of the ship, within the bow itself, is the Spray Bar – a two-deck high champagne bar, in partnership with Moet & Chandon. Located on the top floor is a doorway leading outside onto a small sheltered deck space at the very front of the ship. There are also several quirky windows located along the walls and even the ceiling!

aida princess cruise ship

Nachtclub Nightfly is an adult-only lounge, featuring live entertainment and burlesque-style shows.

aida princess cruise ship

Located next door is Disco D6 , the main nightclub onboard. The decor was really funky, especially as you walk along the entrance way. There’s several booths dotted around, for those who want to escape the loud music and socialise with new friends.

aida princess cruise ship

As the theatre is situated within the atrium, a separate area called AIDA Plaza houses the onboard shops and is a popular meeting point among guests. Head to Scharfe Ecke  for the best Currywurst at sea and other popular German sausages. Also situated within the multi-level AIDA Plaza is Tapas & Bar (serving exactly what the name sugguests!) plus a Magnum ice cream store.

aida princess cruise ship

East Restaurant located on Deck 6 is a complimentary buffet-style restaurant serving classic Asian cuisine, while the Bella Donna Restaurant serves Italian favourites. For a small surcharge, guests can dine in the Mediterranean-inspired  Casa Nova Restaurant.

aida princess cruise ship

The Markt Restaurant wraps around the aft of Deck 6 and is the main buffet-service restaurant onboard  AIDAprima.  This buffet is all about serving fresh, quality and healthy ingredients, you’d expect to find at your local market stall, and this is immediately noticeable as soon as you walk through the main entrance, with an impressive floor-to-ceiling display of various fresh fruit. Inside, you’ll find a fresh meat counter – home to a butcher, slicing cold meats, such as prosciutto, right in front of you. There’s a tempting array of salad accompaniments and a wide range of desserts, including a scoop-your-own ice-cream, with various flavours, sauces and sprinkles to choose from! Sparkling water is placed on all tables, however complimentary drinks, including soda and wine are available in the majority of restaurants onboard the ship, which is a great touch not many other cruise lines provide.

aida princess cruise ship

One deck above is the bright and spacious  Weite Welt Restaurant , serving cuisine from all far corners of the world. Guests can also choose to dine alfresco on the spacious outside deck overlooking the aft of the ship.

aida princess cruise ship

The wide promenade deck, called the Lanai , wraps around the outer edges of  AIDAprima.  Along the route are several outdoor dining areas, bars, sun loungers and even four hot tubs that overlook the sea. Although rather overlooked, balcony staterooms on Deck 8 feature a really cool feature. This video highlights the features of the staterooms, but the balcony windows fold out to create a seamless transition from stateroom to balcony!

aida princess cruise ship

Deck 15 on AIDAprima  is home to  Four Elements.  Inspired by the four elements of the world – water, fire, air and earth – the retractable dome roof houses two waterslides collectively known as AIDA Racer, a lazy river, a ropes course, and a giant movie screen, with tiered seating. During our short time onboard, we managed to have a quick go on the ropes course and it was really scary, hard work and incredibly hot in the enclosed venue. The first two obstacles actually seemed the hardest to do, and they gradually got less intense as we went around the course, which included crawling through tubes, flying on a magic carpet, walking over Flying Saucers, and maneuvering around planets, to name just a few of the challenges that faced us! Also located near Four Elements is the dedicated family dining venue, the  Fuego Restaurant.

aida princess cruise ship

Overlooking both sides of the ship at the back are four glass elevators and two glass-floored walkways called Skywalk that extend over the side of the deck!

One of the best venues on the ship however, has to be the Beach Club . This giant greenhouse (the official term is called foliendom) remains at a constant 25°C no matter what the weather is like outside (particularly great for a 7°C Southampton). It really did feel like you’d been transported to a tropical paradise! There is only one main pool onboard the ship, but it is very large and even has an indoor and outdoor section, allowing guests to swim from the cool outdoor temperatures of Southampton, to the indoor warmth of the Beach Club.

aida princess cruise ship

AIDA Bar is a popular place to have a drink on other AIDA cruise ships, and on  AIDAprima  that is no exception. Thanks to its unique star-shaped design, striking a conversation with someone new is very easy and is a great place to socialise in the day.

A peaceful hideaway is situated at the very front of the ship on Deck 16. The Patio Deck is an adult-only area, exclusive to those staying in Panorama cabins. The exclusive area features a large private pool, a dedicated pool bar, comfortable sun loungers, and amazing sea views from the two glass hot tubs overlooking the bow of the ship!

aida princess cruise ship

In summary,  AIDAprima  is a marvelous, modern and spacious ship. The ship is great for families and also for those who want to relax, with several adult-only areas, but also plenty of family-friendly venues too. The best comparison would be to think of AIDA Cruises as a European Carnival Cruise Lines. The ship is definitely aimed towards German travellers but I think AIDAprima could suit travellers from the UK, as long as you travel with the understanding you will be in the minority. All staff speak English, although entertainment and general announcements won’t necessarily be in English.

AIDAprima Itineraries

Aidaprima review, review of aidaprima.

The 2016-built AIDAprima cruise ship is the first of two AIDA Cruises vessels in the Hyperion-Class series, together with the sister-ship AIDAperla (launched 2017). AIDAprima is the fleet's 11th vessel and the 1st of two Japan-built AIDA ships. AIDA's Hyperion-Class was succeeded by the Helios-Class ( AIDAnova and AIDAcosma ).

The vessel (IMO number 9636955) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247353800) and registered in Genova .

History - construction and ownership

AIDA Cruises is a Rostock -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . AIDA is Europe's largest German cruise line (followed by TUI ) targeting younger and more active travelers. AIDA was founded in 1960 (as "Deutsche Seereederei") and in 2000 was acquired by P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation (shipowner) in 2003. AIDA's first World Cruise (AIDAcara) was in 2017-2018 (October-February) with 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg Germany .

AIDAprima cruise ship

The 3400-passenger ship AIDAprima is AIDA's ever largest ship and is operated under the Costa Crociere division of the Carnival group. She is also the first of AIDA vessels built in Japan.

AIDAprima's completion at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard was delayed. Instead of entering service in October 2015, the vessel started operations in April 2016 from homeport Hamburg .

AIDAprima is among the most technologically advanced passenger ships. The hull is designed to reduce friction and to minimize fuel consumption. Emissions (NOx, SOx and soot particles) are minimized by 90%.

Decks and Cabins

AIDAprima staterooms (1643 total, in 21 grades) include 32 Suites (in 6 grades), 1101 Balcony (69% of all accommodations, in 10 grades), 198 Oceanviews (in 4 grades), 312 Interior cabins (in 3 grades). The largest accommodations are the Forward-Facing Premium Suites (sized 1345 ft2 / 125 m2, with private sundeck terrace sized 885 ft2 / 82 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

All staterooms offer as standard (complimentary) amenities electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), spacious wardrobe (some with walk-in closet), low table with lounge chairs, double bed (most convertible to twins), Pullman beds (in most quads), bedside tables, wall-mounted reading lamps, direct dial phone (baby monitoring option), smart HDTV (infotainment system - satellite reception, Internet, movies-on-demand, ship info channel, real-time camera views), LED lighting, mirrored dressing table (writing desk) with chair, en-suite bathroom (toilet, shower cabin, single-sink vanity, hairdryer), individually controlled air-conditioning.

new AIDA cruise ship design (AIDAprima, AIDAperla)

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The new AIDAprima has a variety of dining options, featuring 13 restaurants and 18 bars. Prima has some classical dining options, including Bella Donna, Markt Restaurant and Fuego buffet family restaurant. Service restaurants such as Casa Nova and French Kiss offer Mediterranean and French cuisines respectively. Guests onboard can visit the AIDA cooking school and try the interactive cooking classes. The ship also features an exclusive Spray Bar which is spread across two decks and operated via a partnership with Moet & Chandon. The stern side features the Lanai Bar on Deck 8, and guests of Patio Bar on Deck 16 can enjoy the same view as the ship's Captain. Other bars include AIDAprima's nightclub Nightfly, M Bar, Tapas & Bar, and club D6.

new AIDA cruise ship design (AIDAprima, AIDAperla)

AIDAprima was the line's first cruise ship serving the premium Starbucks drinks onboard. Since mid-January 2017, onboard can be purchased branded Starbucks products (specialty coffees/teas, 26 different menu items, 3 different sizes - Espresso, Tall, Grande). The new offer is a result of the company's partnership "We Proudly Serve Starbucks" and was gradually introduced to other AIDA ships over 2017.

Follows the complete list of AIDAprima restaurants and food bars.

  • Scharfe Ecke (Sharp Corner, complimentary fast-food dining venue)
  • Rossini (a specialty, dinner-only restaurant at surcharge, reservations required; offers waiter service and 6-course a-la-carte menu)
  • Markt Restaurant (complimentary main dining room; self-service buffet restaurant with a variety of food stations and a small terrace)
  • Bella Donna (Italian cuisine restaurant, complimentary, buffet-style dining, open 24 hours)
  • Ristorante Casa Nova (Mediterranean cuisine restaurant at a surcharge)
  • Brasserie French Kiss (French cuisine restaurant, reservations-only, at a surcharge)
  • Weite Welt Restaurant (Wide World complimentary buffet-style restaurant)
  • Buffalo Steakhouse (American fare restaurant with a la carte menu; reservations required; at a surcharge)
  • Sushi Bar (Japanese restaurant at surcharge, reservations are required)
  • Fuego Restaurant (new family restaurant, complimentary, with a kids buffet)
  • East Restaurant (Asian cuisine, buffet-style complimentary restaurant)

On June 24, 2023, on the ships AIDAprima , AIDAperla and AIDAnova was introduced the new specialty restaurant Soulkitchen. The a-la-carte-priced venue has a 3-course menu with plant-based vegan dishes (including meat and seafood alternatives) and organic beverages (coffee, tea, fresh juices) as well as non-alcoholic wines and spirits.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Passengers can unwind by the pool in the AIDA Prima's Beach Club. At night, this area turns into a magnificent party scene. The Beach Club is housed beneath the expandable membrane roof. It features the activity area "Four Elements" (based on water, air, fire, and earth). Guests can have their best "AIDA fun" on the two water slides, or to try rock climbing, or any other activities on the Prima ship's sports deck. This deck also has a giant LED wall for movies and other outdoor video entertainment. AIDAprima is the company's 11th liner and also the fleet's first Japan-built ship. The vessel's construction started on June 30, 2013. The launch was in April 2016. The second "Japanese ship" ( AIDAperla ) joined the fleet in 2017. In August 2011, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was awarded the contract for building two new generation AIDA ships - Prima and Perla. Prima's construction began with the keel-laying ceremony at the company's Tategami Plant ( Nagasaki Shipyard) in June 2013.

AIDAprima cruise ship construction (Japan)

The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) on May 4, 2015. The christening ceremony was scheduled for March 2015 and the inaugural cruise first for October, then for December 2015. The ship's delivery was on March 14, 2016. Finally, the 86-day long World Cruise (inaugural itinerary from Hamburg) was re-scheduled for April 30, 2016.

AIDAprima cruise ship construction (Japan)

Ship's maiden voyage was scheduled for October 1, 2015 (departing from Yokohama-Tokyo ). However, due to construction problems, vessel's delivery was re-scheduled for December 2015, then for April 2016. The cruise ship is commanded by Captain Detlef Harms.

On March 14, 2016, the vessel was officially delivered to AIDA Cruises. The traditional Japanese ceremony was attended by Michael Thamm (Costa Group's CEO), Felix Eichhorn (AIDA's President), Shunichi Miyanaga (shipbuilder MHI's CEO) and Yoichi Kujirai (shipbuilder MHI's Senior Executive VP). Followed the repositioning to Europe via Suez Canal . On March 20, 2016, the ship stopped in its first ever port of call - Singapore , en-route from Nagasaki to Hamburg. The new ship was berthed for 2 days at the Sembawang Shipyard, where some 40 containers with equipment were loaded. She sailed away with all the 900+ crew.

On April 19, 2016, in Rotterdam AIDA Cruises signed an agreement with Royal Dutch Shell as exclusive LNG provider for AIDA's port engine operations. On April 27, 2016, the new ship made its maiden call at Southampton during the 4-day cruise roundtrip from Hamburg (Apr 25-29).

On May 7, 2016, was the vessel's christening ceremony in Port Hamburg , where was joined by the fleet mate AIDAaura . The ship's naming ceremony coincided with Hamburg port's 827th anniversary marked by a fireworks show. Ship's godmother is Emma Schweiger - a 13-year-old German actress. The ship's Captain is Detlef Harms. The naming ceremony was also attended by AIDA's president Felix Eichhorn.

On April 30, 2016, was the Inaugural Cruise (itinerary April 30 - May 7). The 7-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg visited Southampton, Le Havre-Paris, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam. Maiden voyage's prices started at GBP 500 pp. Followed regular roundtrip departures (year-round) from Hamburg and also from Rotterdam .

On January 26, 2017, 80 leading politicians, scientists and businessmen boarded the ship (docked in Rotterdam Holland ). The special event was part of the international trade conference “Making LNG Happen: Combining Forces for Sustainable Shipping". Prima was chosen as being the world's first cruise ship with dual-fuel marine engines, producing energy from LNG (liquefied natural gas) while the vessel is docked in port. The LNG fuel is supplied by truck. Ship's diesel engines are shut off in port, resulting in approx 80% reduction of NOX emissions and about 20% of CO2.

Ship technology

AIDAprima is one of the most technologically advanced cruise vessels on the market. The ship rides on a cushion of air, thus reducing frictions and fuel consumption, The new technology is called MALS ("Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System"), allowing the liner to glide on an air bubbles carpet.

Zeppelin Power Systems was contracted to provide engine-maintenance and support services. The deal included the company's "Cat Asset Intelligence" (engine data analysis) system providing real-time monitoring and reporting.

  • The powerplant consists of 3x diesel engines (Caterpillar MaK, model 12V M43C, total output 28,35 MV) plus 1x dual-fuel (LNG/oil, model MaK M46DF, output 8,6 MV).
  • Dual-fuel engines use heavy oil and LNG, thus reducing fuel consumption. The ship has an advanced filtering system that reduces stack emissions (greenhouse gases).
  • The propulsion system includes 2x stabilizers, 2x ABB Azipod drives (new XO-Pod thrusters, power output 3 MW per unit) plus 3x Brunvoll thrusters (model FU-115-3000).
  • The vessel's total power output is 48 MW.

Next YouTube video shows the AIDAprima cruise ship construction (time-lapse, Nagasaki Shipyard).

AIDAprima is the world's first-ever "LNG cruise ship" as it uses LNG fuel supply while berthed in ports. This is also the first German-market dedicated cruise ship with an ice rink. The facility was inaugurated by the skating duo Peter Turner and Salome Casabona Studer, best known from their "Believe" ice show. With the ice rink, AIDA Cruises announced the company's partnership with "Holiday on Ice". The ice rink is opened only during the winter season (until mid-March).

Among the ship's signature facilities are also Beach Club (adults-only complex, dome-covered), climbing garden, Four Elements (water park with 2 slides), Mini Club (nursery / babysitting), patio deck (panorama cabins), promenade deck (lanai with infinity pools), huge Spa complex (sized 3100 m2 / 33400 ft2), glass-walled elevators, skywalk (glass-bottomed platform).

The AIDA ship's namesakes are the AmaWaterways ' riverboat AmaPrima (2013-built) and the NCL 's liner Norwegian Prima (2022-built).

Cruise Ship Review: AIDAperla

Total immersion on aidaperla.

Those smiling red lips and exotic Cleopatra eyes on the bow make AIDA’s cruise ships the most strikingly dramatic-looking ships in any cruise port, from China to Miami to the Mediterranean. Yet outside of Germany, AIDA is almost unknown, even amongst cruise-lovers.

I was the only American, and the only non-German speaker on my week-long cruise on AIDA’s newest ship AIDAperla … and it was one of my best and most unique cruises ever.

“Aren’t you worried that no one will speak English,” a friend asked me before I left.

“Well, not speaking German wouldn’t stop me from visiting Germany,” I explained. “So what’s the difference?”

AIDAPerla: The Passengers

More than 95 percent of AIDA guests are German speakers, but all of the crew speaks English, and very well too. In fact, it’s the official language the crew uses to communicate since they are from all nationalities. All of the major announcements are made in German, but most are repeated in English. If you are an experienced cruiser, you won’t have any difficulties.

In fact, being on a German line while cruising through Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium (plus a day in the UK) made the cruise more immersive in the European experience, both in the shore excursions and then back on board. I had all the cruise advantages — not having to unpack and repack for each destination, no worries about transportation — yet the ship was like a beautiful small German town. I could take a leisurely walk around the sophisticated little town each evening and try a different international restaurant, check out what was happening in the town square, watch the cabaret show perhaps, have a drink at an outside terrace bar to catch the sunset, and afterwards enjoy the beach party under the stars on the top deck. There was even a late-night takeout currywurst (curry-flavored pork sausage) stand and a tapas bar outside the disco where revelers could take a break from the loud dance music and neon lights to have a snack and hang with their friends on the street outside.

And just like a real town, the guests were a mix of families, groups of friends, couples, and people of all ages.

But the differences on AIDAperla go well beyond language.

Informality, Inside and Out

The atmosphere on AIDA is informal and individual. There are no rules about attire or formal nights. If you want to dress up and go to the steakhouse, then go ahead, but you can also stay casual and eat very well at one of the informal buffet restaurants. Over a beer one night, a fellow guest confided that her husband loves AIDA because he never has to put on a tie. There is even a nude area in the spa and a secluded clothing-optional area for sunbathing on the top deck.

The ship design was bright and modern with lots of natural materials and innovative spaces. “Germans like to be outside or feel like they are outside,” one crewmember told me. The design of AIDAperla is oriented towards the outdoors, with lots of light and windows everywhere. Most of the bars and restaurants feature outdoor tables, and even some of the inner spaces like hallways, are designed to look like tree-lined streets, and the spa and gym feature cleverly designed ceilings that make you feel like you are working out under a beautiful green canopy of trees.

The informal feel of AIDA extended to the entertainment as well. The main theater on AIDAperla is a three-story amphitheater that is wide open on all sides in the middle of the ship. This made stopping to watch just part of the show much easier as you walked passed the space.

Food and Bier

In keeping with the informal theme, there is no main dining room, and other than a few specialty restaurants that charge a small supplement, you never need to make a dining reservation. Dine anytime you please, with whomever you please. There are 12 unique restaurants aboard AIDAperla , and about half are buffet style. The food is extremely varied, from a large Asian restaurant, a sushi bar, a steakhouse, Italian and French restaurants, and a beautiful and elegant gourmet restaurant. The house wine and beer are included at every meal and there are small supplements for more expensive wine and cocktails.

The uniquely German Brauhaus is a lively space where guests sit at long wooden tables. Unless there are sing-alongs, where guests are dancing on the tables. The AIDAperla biermeister brews three different beers aboard using actual seawater!

One of my favorite spaces was the Lanai Bar on Deck 7 at the very back of the ship. The large open bar features unique, outward facing booths where guests face the water yet are protected from the wind. It’s the best-designed space….

Carnival Corporation & PLC owns and operates many popular cruise brands, including namesake brand Carnival Cruise Line, also the corporation's largest.

Nine cruise lines fall under the Carnival umbrella, making it the largest parent company in the cruise industry. You've likely heard of Carnival Cruise Line but may be less familiar with the smaller brands in the group.

Aida Cruises

aida princess cruise ship

Aida might not be familiar to you, but that's by design. It caters fully to a German-speaking market, which means North Americans might find it difficult to mingle with fellow passengers and crew if they sailed on one of the line's 12 ships.

Aida's vessels are painted with the line's trademark faces, featuring yellow eyes, blue eyeshadow and bright red lips.

The line became part of Carnival Corp. in 2003, when the corporation merged with P&O Princess Cruises, which included Aida, P&O, P&O Australia and Princess.

Carnival Cruise Line

aida princess cruise ship

Founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, Carnival Cruise Line started out with just one secondhand ship, Mardi Gras. Since then, it has grown to be the industry's largest cruise brand with more than two dozen vessels currently in operation, all of which were built specifically for the line (including one of its newest, also named Mardi Gras in honor of the original ship).

Carnival refers to its fleet as the "fun ships," offering a lively onboard atmosphere that focuses on pool parties, game shows and original entertainment. It prides itself on friendly service and a plethora of casual yet delectable dining venues. The line is an excellent choice for families, and it offers both short and long voyages at a variety of price points that make cruising affordable for most travelers.

Costa Cruises

aida princess cruise ship

Carnival Corp. took full ownership of Italian line Costa Cruises in 2000 after originally obtaining just 50% in 1997. The brand largely serves the Italian cruise demographic in the Mediterranean. In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Carnival Corp. transferred some of Costa's ships to Carnival Cruise Line, touting "Fun Italian Style" and offering North Americans a taste of what Costa has to offer.

Like its North America-based counterparts, Costa sails ships that include several restaurants, bars and entertainment venues but with an Italian flare – right down to gondola decor and pasta galore.

Cunard Line

aida princess cruise ship

The Carnival parent company took over a majority stake in Cunard in 1998, but the brand's history began in 1840, when a Canadian war veteran established a fleet of steam-powered ferries and, later, ocean liners.

Throughout the years, Cunard vessels have been responsible for serving in wars, transporting immigrants and running transatlantic routes between the U.S. and Europe. The line started out offering necessary transportation but eventually pivoted to the luxurious leisure travel for which the line is known today.

On board, try a fencing class, learn flower arranging, or enjoy a full-service afternoon tea with real clotted cream served by white-gloved waiters.

Holland America Line

aida princess cruise ship

Acquired by Carnival Corp. in 1989, Holland America also carries a rich history dating back to 1873. It initially sailed transatlantic voyages that ferried immigrants between The Netherlands and New York City.

The line currently relies heavily on its heritage to inform its current identity. On board, passengers will find excellent food, music and customer service, all of which tend to draw slightly older passengers and multigenerational family groups.

P&O Australia

aida princess cruise ship

P&O Australia was acquired by Carnival in 2003, and it remains the only cruise line in the world that caters entirely to Australian passengers who enjoy fun-in-the-sun cruises.

With just three ships in its fleet, the line is small but specific, offering round-trip voyages from Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and sailing throughout the Australia and New Zealand regions.

P&O Cruises

aida princess cruise ship

P&O Cruises is the U.K. counterpart to P&O Australia, providing a fun and affordable cruise experience for Brits.

It features an onboard vibe that's slightly more upscale than sister brand Carnival but at a similar price point and with decidedly English touches, such as an absolutely scrumptious — and free — afternoon tea.

Like several of Carnival Corp.'s other brands, the line came under the umbrella in 2003 during the P&O Princess Cruises merger.

Princess Cruises

aida princess cruise ship

Princess was rolled under the Carnival umbrella in 2003 when Carnival Corp. combined with P&O Princess Cruises.

Princess' ships walk the line between courting older passengers with their connection to popular 1980s television show "The Love Boat" and staying current with technological advancements that include the industry's first fleetwide wearable, the OceanMedallion . As a result, the line appeals to a variety of passengers of all ages, including couples hoping to share a romantic vacation.

Seabourn Cruise Line

aida princess cruise ship

In 1992, Carnival Corp. acquired a 25% stake in Seabourn before purchasing the entire brand outright in 2001. The luxury cruise line, which includes things like alcohol, Wi-Fi and gratuities in its fares, sails a fleet of lovely ships with a focus on high-end furnishings and next-level service.

Seabourn also began offering expedition sailings with a couple of vessels that were built specifically for cruises to rugged, far-flung and less-traveled destinations that include the Arctic and the Galapagos.

AIDA's fleet of 14 ships, custom-designed and built with the wants and needs of the German cruiser in mind, have a number of features that won't be seen on ships built for other markets.  These include the theatrium (a combination theater-atrium), nude sunbathing decks, and many more smoker-friendly locations than on ships of any other major cruise line.  In the future, German cruisers will likely see AIDA ships continue to introduce new concepts in terms of design and construction of cruise ships, all to tailor the cruise experience to the German consumer population.

The company, an integral part of Carnival Corporation & plc, continues to pave the way into the future with each new ship and class of ship offering a plethora of unique and innovative features.

AIDA Cruises was founded in the early 1960s as Deutsche Seereederei.  The Rostock, Germany, based firm was privatized following the unification of Germany, and was renamed DSR.  DSR bought out Seetours of Bremen and the line marketed cruises under the Seetours name.  The company underwent a further rebranding on 1 January 1998, when a company named Arkona Touristik took over the cruise branch of DSR.

In 2000, P&O Cruises bought a 51% share of the company, with Arkona Touristik retaining the other 49%.  The company formed by this partnership was AIDA Cruises, taking the name of the 1996 newbuild.  The following year, P&O Princess Cruises bought out Arkona Touristik's shares in AIDA and Seetours, and in 2003 a merger between P&O Princess and Carnival Corporation formed Carnival Corporation & plc.  Finally, in 2004, Seetours was rebranded as AIDA Cruises, and the company has since gained a large following in the German-language cruise market.

In an ef fort to do something that was unique in the industry, t hey reintroduced the vertical bow on 2016's AIDAprima .  I n late 2018, AIDAnova became the first cruise ship to be powered entirely by LNG.  The f irst of nine Excellence class ships, she was forward-thinking and a definitive successor to AIDAprima.

AIDA's anticipated third Helios-class ship, designated by builder Meyer Werft as S.717, was transferred to Carnival on 23 June 2021.  This was likely done to grow the number of berths in Carnival's fleet, as that same day it was also announced that a Costa ship would be transferred to Carnival.

News Release

Carnival corporation to strategically align portfolio and absorb p&o cruises australia into carnival cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line to boost its capacity by absorbing P&O Cruises Australia in 2025, further optimizing the company's brand portfolio creating operational efficiencies

MIAMI and SYDNEY , June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc  (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced that in March 2025 , the company will sunset the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line , the most popular cruise line in the world.

This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line , the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival Corporation's global portfolio. This will result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021, including the successful shift of three vessels from sister brand Costa Cruises . In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.

Josh Weinstein , chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company's overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line , which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period."

In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," said Weinstein. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific 's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region. Carnival Corporation & plc remains committed to Australia and we will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations and representing almost 60% of the market."

Building on Shared Legacy in the Region  As the P&O Cruises Australia brand retires early next year, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line brand. Pacific Explorer will exit the fleet in February of 2025. Current itineraries will operate business as usual, and guests will be notified in the coming days of any changes to future bookings as a result of this announcement.

When the transition is complete next year, Carnival Cruise Line – which has served the South Pacific since 2013 – will have four ships in the market, including Sydney -based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane , in addition to their new sister ships Encounter and Adventure.

Christine Duffy , president of Carnival Cruise Line . "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests. The most notable change will be the availability of our popular HubApp, enabling guests to make online dining and excursion reservations, request food and beverage delivery, and chat with other guests, among other features. P&O Cruises Australia guests will also be invited to participate in Carnival's loyalty program and promotional offerings specific to Carnival ships sailing in the region."

"Over the coming months, we will find ways to celebrate and honor P&O Cruises Australia – a valued part of our legacy and an important contributor to the tourism industry in the South Pacific ," said Weinstein. "We value the connection our P&O Cruises Australia guests, employees, travel advisor partners, public officials and destinations have with our company and are committed to building on this association moving forward as Carnival."

[EDITOR'S NOTE: This announcement does not impact P&O Cruises ( UK ), which is a separate Carnival Corporation & plc brand based in England and dedicated to the UK market.]
