Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

  • Edit source

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a 4-Door Sports Saloon Car , developed by Alfa Romeo , that was featured in The Grand Tour in Season 1 .

It was tested by Jeremy Clarkson in Wales for a film review during the episode Dumb Fight at the O.K. Coral - and he had praised it immensely. It was also put the test around the Eboladrome .

Specifications [ ]

  • 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds
  • Top Speed is 191 mph
  • 60 more than a BMW M3
  • The propshaft, roof and bonnet are made of carbon-fibre

Jeremy Clarkson's review "disrupts"/"steals" James and Richard's film about their Jaguar-BMW Debate in Scotland. He states it is a proper Alfa Romeo because there's something wrong with it - the position of the door and getting out of it (See the video below). Jeremy says this helps yto form a relationship with your car, as this gives it human qualities.

He goes on to say it's not handsome, the wheels are too small and the front looks like a Wolseley . Explaining that James had previously argued that there was nothing good with Alfa Romeos to compensate for the faults, he believes this car is different due to the specification and twin-turbocharged engine.

For this episode the tent is sat in Nashville. Clarkson drives the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio before the trio attempts to save the coral reef.

They start the show by showing that the majority of cars driven in Nashville are Japanese, and how all but Jeremy love the music.

They then discuss coal rolling and show some footage.

Clarkson Reviews The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

He travels to Wales to review the new Alfa sports saloon in which he begins by saying the car must have faults to be an Alfa. It has a big one – the seat is right beside the B-pillar which makes it very difficult to enter and exit. This is a good thing, as it shows it has human imperfections.

He loves the engine (which is very Ferrari-esque) but before he could test it on a track, Hammond rings him from Scotland asking where the film crew is.

Clarkson arrives at the Eboladrome and praises it even further before it’s taken around the track by The American. It did a 1:27.1 wet lap.

Conversation Street

Clarkson begins by talking about the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Alfa’s new SUV. Then, because they’re in America, they show multiple photos of the best selling vehicle in the state, the Ford Raptor. From this, they talk about how a pickup truck isn’t actually overly practical because of its size and weight, and things put in the back are stolen in the UK.

After this, they discuss how good American muscle cars are to look at, even though they aren’t overly good to drive. They wonder what will be in car museums in 40 years.

James May brings up how the Nurburgring will be banning manufacturers from doing timed laps. He’s happy about this as cars which are set up specifically to get a good time on the’Ring won’t be good on the road.

The Trio Solve The Coral Issue

The presenters travel to Barbados where they set out to solve the issue of dying Coral by submerging car shells under the water for marine life to grow on and around.

Firstly they try to use a fishing boat to do this, but this fails. They do manage to drop two cars in the water and James May is asked to anchor them down while Hammond and Clarkson go jet skiing. May fails, so Clarkson dives down to the cars and welds them to the sea bed.

This fails as well as the cars are fond on the beach the next day. May uses a bulldozer to a crane before they’re kicked out of their hotel.

The next day they successfully put a Land Rover under the sea while Clarkson chases after a trimaran.

Celebrity Brain Crash

Brian Johnson gets trampled by a team of footballers before the audience argues over the meaning of ‘football’.

The next grand tour episode will feature drifty alfa giulia quadrifoglio goodness.

Matt Robinson

While I haven’t always been watching Grand Tour episodes at the first available opportunity, I suspect I’ll be streaming the next one as soon as it goes live. Why? Because Jeremy Clarkson will be taking to the ‘Eboladrome’ in the new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio .

The 503bhp, V6-powered Giulia was one of the most exciting cars launched last year, and given Clarkson’s well documented Alfa Romeo obsession, it’ll be interesting to see what the verdict is. We’re pretty keen to see what kind of lap time it can knock out, too…

“You’re not a car enthusiast until you have owned an Alfa”

True Petrolhead*

When you hear an Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio…

What ep + season?

Actually wasn’t May in a Brerra in this?

Clarkson drop a one liner on Trump, saying General Nash got you your indepence by beating the Brits how that working out for you.

there other great one liner involded as well.

Itll drift itself into a pile of rust. XD

I doubt the Alfa review will be able to hold a candle to Chris Harris’. His was unbelievable.

i will say that the Grand Tour started out rough but with each episode it is getting better and better. They are finally getting back into their old rhythm.

great episode!

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

I liked it also!

I like how entertaining its getting which is great in attracting just about anyone and everyone but I fear they might start to lose touch with the whole automotive aspect of it and providing the sort of feedback and information we want on that end. Anyone concerned about this?

I really hope that doesn't happen. They're very honest in opinion regardless as to whether or not they play it off as a joke and that's what I like

I really enjoyed Jeremy's review. Looking forward to testing driving one soon. Still no availability in my area.

Welcome! I am in the DMV area as well. It will be tough to get one again around here from what I hear but hopefully they will be in stock soon.

The Grand Tour Giulia Quadrifoglio Review (This Thursday)

  • Add to quote

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

I have been very down on Alfa US ever since the big manual/automatic switcheroo in November which ended up affecting my (non) car purchase. But I have to admit that after seeing the piece on the Giulia QV on The Grand Tour, I may have to give it some consideration. One thing that I did agree with James is that these manufacturer lap times on Nurburgring are absolutely nonsense.

The Grand Tour Giulia Quadrifoglio Review (This Friday)

  • Add to quote

Jeremy Clarkson actually bought a Giulia Quadrifoglio (First one sold in the UK)

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

Is he going to make it into a pickup for a show? He seems that civilised.

This show annoys more than entertains in my view but have kept Amazon Prime going to reach this episode at least.

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

Jeremy liked it a lot, the other two were dicks. Great filming, enjoyed it. I won't spoil any more in case you haven't seen it yet.

Standard for the show and the 'dynamic' or 'banter' - their inconsistency annoys me

Track time in the wet was disappointing, it crushes the M2 and M4. Also very odd the NR was spoken about shortly thereafter without referencing the 4 door record time.

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

Seems like BMW (and the rest) just got very lucky that the QV had to perform in the wet! The cynic in me leans towards some more dubious goings on, whereby the rain avoided an almighty shake up in the order of things if (when) the QV whipped the backsides of its German rivals! (The lobby power/influence of BMW/M-B etc. strong as it is probably isn't up to "making it rain on demand", but its very convenient, nevertheless!):biglaugh::biglaugh:

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

Watched the Giulia QF review just now - altough the piece is funny and entertaining it could be longer. But what annoyed me the most was fact-checking. Giuila QF's engine and California T engine do not have "hot V" configuration with turbos in-between the cylinder heads, but have more standard approach with exhaust manifolds and turbos being on the outside of the engine. "Hot V" configuration is more common in german cars (Audi S4 and up-coming RS4), MB C 63 AMG, BMW M5 F10, new Porsche Panamera (V6 and V8 are a joint work between Audi and Porsche, so new Panamera shares its V6 engines with the new Audi A4 B9, and this V6 is just a V8 with 2 cyliders taken away). Also Giulia QF does not have twin-scroll turbos, but 2 normal turbos. V6 engines usually only come with twin-scroll turbos when they have only one turbo, which feeds all 6 cylinders, in twin turbo configurations however, each turbo is smaller as it feeds only 3 cylinders and is to small for twin-scroll confguartion to make sense. And lastly, is it really that hard with such a big budget to do a track lap on a dry day? Everybody was waiting to se how it compares to other cars, and now this damn stupid wet lap... just like last week with Honda NSX. Argh...

Fantastic review by Clarkson...and funny too I always said the front end design sucks( a bit better seen in person) and Clarkson agrees lol

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

Whats not to like about the car? The question is can you get the Ferrari V8 into the engine bay? The dealer they showed JC turning up at is T H White Swindon who are counted as one of the top three Alfa dealers in the UK by Alfa Romeo themselves. I am going for a test drive next week in the QF and will probably order one too.

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

that review will do this car no harm whatsoever, looks brill, sounds brill and a huge endorsement !

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

I came away from the programme liking the Giulia more and Richard Hammond considerably less. His smugness is becoming unbearable, and James barely talks these days, which is a shame as he's easily the smartest and most grounded of the three. Can't see me renewing my Prime subscription after this season.

Your comments re RH accord with a colleague of mine who had the misfortune to sit next to him at a local hunt dinner. Git was one word he used.

Calling it the Alfa 'quadroplegio' made me giggle

They really buggered that program up. I thought for a minute we were going to get a proper M3/Jag/Alfa comparison, which would be genuinely interesting. But, no, we got a Clarkson monologue, which was OK, but not as good as it could have been with a proper test. I don't get the "I can't get out of it" line. I'm the same height as him, not as fat, but had no issue getting out. Maybe he has dwarf legs and has the seat too far forward?

I know what he means about the doors, but if you don't have the big old gut it's much less of an issue. The thing I don't get is the tiny wheels comment? They are massive 19" wheels? It could probably just about stand 20s, but that would be it and it would probably ruin the lovely ride that he was so complimentary about.

And an engine moving on it's mounts when you close the doors? Shocking. I bet no other car does that, except, of course, for all the other cars...

When I went to collect my new 147 Q2 there was a pentagon delivery driver at the dealers who'd just delivered a car from the conditioning centre. He also had the job of taking cars to journalists , including the three TG boys. He said May was likeable , Clarkson was as you'd expect and Hammond was a creeping git towards Clarkson , in his own words.

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

I've found Hammond irritating for years.

alfa romeo giulia grand tour

Same here, and even more so in the current programme. In the film bits they are making him out to be the village idiot, then in the studio it's all forced argumentative conversation. Just has to disagree and argue whatever the point is. Irritating...

The show is scripted

Brilliant. Sums him up perfectly!

Dumb Fight at the O.K. Coral

The grand tour.

  • The Grand Tour travelling tent arrives in Nashville, Tennessee from where Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May introduce their attempt to save the world's coral reefs. In the interests of conservation, the three travel to Barbados and begin an earnest attempt to establish a new reef using only some car bodyshells as a foundation. Their efforts start badly and then get worse, involving inept crane driving, useless boat steering, and an embarrassing moment with a local hotel. Also in this show, Jeremy finally indulges his series-long Alfa Romeo obsession with a test of the new, 500 horsepower Giulia Quadrifoglio. Meanwhile, AC/DC and genuine rock legend Brian Johnson comes to the tent to try his hand at Celebrity Brain Crash.
  • The trio host their next episode at Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville is named after General Nash, who kicked the British out. The best-selling cars in US are all Hondas and Toyotas. Detroit has women with armpit hair growing Kale. Coal rolling is a sport where people test their pickup trucks to see who can roll the heaviest load. To get power up from the engine, they tweak the ECU, but it produces more smoke, hence the word Coal rolling. There is a loud banter with the crowd between football and American football. To help save dying coral reefs off the coast near Barbados, the trio attempt to shore them up by dumping the shells of five car bodies to help them rebuild. May and Hammond get the cars and the crane. Clarkson gets a boat, which is very small, underwhelming, and ugly. They soon face issues from losing most of the bodies they bring, leaving them to attempt to complete their job with the body of a Land Rover. The first car goes into the harbor, when Hammond accidentally pulls the crane release string early, before the car is in position over the boat. The 2nd car gets on the boat but takes it down with it. After sinking 2 cars, the port authorities chased them away. They take the remaining cars to a nearby Marina and hire a boat crane to load them onto a handmade float. Miraculously, they get 2 cars onto the float and drop them where scientists have told them that a reef can form. Now May, a certified diver, goes down to anchor the cars. Hammond and Clarkson are on oxygen pumping duty, but they hook it to a generator and go skiing. But May could not anchor the cars as the boat he was tethered to, drifted while Hammond and Clarkson were busy water sporting. Clarkson goes down in a scuba to weld the cars. But Clarkson didn't do it properly and next day the currents had carried both cars to the beach. The trio must retrieve the cars from the beach. But May removes a central string on the float, and it comes apart. So, May proposes to tow the cars back to the Marina and build a new float to start over. He brings a JCB to the beach. May fails, so Clarkson proposes to use the boat crane to tow the cars to their correct spot in the ocean. But the boat crane rope also breaks and the cars drop near the beach. The hotel (to whom the beach belongs) order them off as they have ruined the beach and all the furniture in it. The next day, the boat crane owner takes his crane back, so the trio only have a land rover left. They tie big tube tires to it and Clarkson tows the car into position using a ski. They sink the car at the location. Meanwhile, Clarkson travels between Wales and the Eboladrome, as he gives an extensive review of the new 500 horsepower Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (turbo charged 2.9 L V6, 191 mph, Bp 60,000). Competitor to the BMW M3 (440 BHP) and the Jaguar ES (330 BHP). The car isn't easy to get out of. engineered by the same man who designed the Ferrari 458. Heavy on carbon fiber, slip disk differential, responsive steering, and a great gearbox. The Ferrari (which is part of the own company that owns Alpha Romeo) is at pains to point that the Giulia engine is not the same as theirs and that any resemblance to their own engine is only coincidental. The race mode in the Alpha is good. It does 1:27.1 on the Eboladrome and is 13th. Conversation street. Alpha Romeo Stelvio is launched. Ford Pick Up truck is the bestselling car in Nashville. The trio wonder why people don't steal stuff when it is kept in the open back of a pickup truck. May offers that's because they shoot them here in US for that. Today's car museums have beautiful cars such as the Impala, Cadillac, Buick, a 70's corvette (driven by all the astronauts) because design was an art in the 70's, but the same brands are churning out boring looking cars now, which means the museums wont have anything to show in another 40 years. May talks about how car brands create cars for setting lap times around the Nürburgring, but aren't good at anything else, such as BMW M4 GTS, Nissan GTR, SEAT Leon Cupra 280 (hatchback). AC/DC singer Brian Johnson comes to the tent to try his hand at Celebrity Brain Crash.
