Lanjarón, Pórtugos, Capilerilla, Pampaneira & Trevélez star in this excursion to the villages of the Alpujarra . You can choose between two different routes. You won't be able to stop taking pictures!
![alpujarras day trip Lanjarón](https://www.civitatis.com/f/espana/granada/galeria/lanjaron.jpg)
When booking, you can choose between two different options. Both start at Plaza de las Descalzas at the indicated time and last from 7 to 8 hours:
Lanjarón, Pórtugos, Capilerilla & Pampaneira Excursion
If you choose this option, we'll get on a bus and leave the city center behind to head for the Alpujarra Granadina , a region stretching along the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada famous for its beautiful and charming villages.
The first stop will be at the Nasrid bridge of Tablate , where we'll begin to learn about the links of these lands with Muslim culture. We'll remember the times of Al Andalus as we approach Lanjarón , a village famous for its miraculous waters. We'll head to its castle to further delve into the relationship of the Arabs with Alpujarra.
Afterward, we'll head to an incredible viewpoint that will offer us one of the best views of the Poqueira Valley , the Guadalfeo Valley and the Sierra Nevada. Time for some photos!
We'll continue the excursion through Alpujarra towards Pórtugos to visit one of its great tourist attractions, the Fuente Agria spring and the Chorreón waterfall . After this visit, we'll continue our journey to Capilerilla , where we'll see what rural life is like today. We'll stroll through fruit orchards, see an old washhouse and learn about the local architecture .
The last stop of the day will be in Pampaneira , one of the highest altitude villages in Spain and Europe . We'll leave you an hour and a half of free time to have lunch and explore this beautiful village full of white houses at your own pace.
Trevélez, Pampaneira & Pórtugos Excursion
Booking this route, we'll also visit the Nasrid bridge of Tablate , the viewpoint of the Poqueira Valley , and Pórtugos . The trip will then take us to Trevélez , the highest altitude village in the Alpujarra Granadina. We'll stroll through this whitewashed village and let ourselves be enchanted by the beauty of its church and fountains. We'll also learn all about its pride and joy with a visit to an Alpujarran ham curing room with a tasting session included.
In Trevélez, you'll also have an hour free to get some lunch. Once you've had something to eat, we'll head to Pampaneira . This village is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain and one of the most iconic spots in the Alpujarra.
You'll have one hour of free time in Pampaneira so you can wander around its charming streets. We recommend exploring the 16th-century Parish Church of Santa Cruz , the old washing places, and Paseo de Federico García Lorca .

Alpujarras Tourist Guide
TripSavvy / Damian Corrigan
The Alpujarras, south of Granada, is a mountain range with a beautiful collection of villages and some of the most stunning countryside in all of Spain . An essential day trip from Granada, you could easily spend a week here, especially if you enjoy hiking, as it has some of the best trails in the country.
Those who are knowledgeable in alternative medicine will notice a number of beneficial herbs and grasses growing by the side of the road. The prickly pears and blackberries are edible, though if you aren't entirely confident of what it is, best wait until you arrive in one of the villages and buy some there. It's safer that way, too - the prickly pears will leave their thorns behind in your fingers and the blackberries will stain your clothes no matter how careful you are!
Two famous books were written on this region - Chris Stewart's Driving Over Lemons and Gerald Brennan's South from Granada.
Guided Tours of the Alpujarras
The Alpujarras region is a fragmented area of tiny villages and public transport is limited. Without a private car, you'd struggle to see more than two villages in a day. But if you take a tour, you'll visit some of the best spots in the area without the hassle of driving (and map-reading!) yourself.
Best Time to Visit
There is a vast number of festivals in the Alpujarras region, the most fun being the Fiesta de Agua, which is a giant water fight held each June 24 in Lanjarón (much like the Tomatina Tomato Fight , only cleaner!) and the New Year's Eve in August in Bérchules. In early October the citizens of Cádiar replace water in the fountains with wine and don't get themselves arrested.
Three Things to Do
- Go hiking. There are some excellent hiking trails in the region (see below).
- Sample the natural spring water - at its purest in Lanjarón and its most medicinal at the Fuente Agria near Portugos.
- Taste some of the finest jamón (Spanish ham) in the country.
How to Get to the Alpujarras From Granada
- By Car : With so many small villages to explore, a car is your only real option if you plan on seeing a lot of the Alpujarras in one day. You need to drive around the mountains along the A44 until Lanjarón is signposted. However, to explore the region, you'll need to buy a map.
- By Bus : Taking a bus is very impractical in this region; you'll only get to see two towns at the most in a day if you rely on public transport. However, if you intend on basing yourself in one town for a few days, taking the bus is certainly possible. Experiment for yourself on Movelia and see if there are buses to where you want them when you want them.
Where to Next?
You're more than halfway to the beach, so if you have a car the coast is an obvious next stop, though public transport is going to be difficult if not impossible, so you'll need to return to Granada if you are relying on buses.
Villages of the Alpujarras
These are the most important towns in the Alpujarras, though there are a number more. To visit them all would require two days. And that's without any hiking or real exploration of the countryside around these villages.
These villages are listed in the order you will pass them when coming from Granada. For pictures, see Pictures of the Alpujarras.
- Home of the water of the same name, Lanjaron has a good health spa , with five natural springs in the town.
- Orgiva is one of the larger towns in the area and has relatively good public transport links with Granada and Malaga. There is a Buddhist retreat 5km from here (open for visitors from 3 pm till 6 pm).
- Shares the Río Poqueira gorge with Bubión and Capileira, Pampaneira is one of the prettiest villages in the Alpujarras. The stream that flows through its streets is especially cute.
- Bubión is a great base if you want to go walking - it is on the GR7 hiking route .
- The highest of the three Río Poqueira towns, it is a good starting point if you intend on climbing the mountain Mulhacén.
- Not an especially exciting town, but it is home to the Fuente Agria, a natural spring with very high iron content. The water tastes of sparkling water that have gone flat and, though completely clear, leaves an orange residue where it flows.
- Trevélez is the biggest ham-producing town in one of the biggest ham producing regions in Spain . It also produces good wines.
- A small town remarkable only for its New Year's Eve in August festival.
- Village very close to Bérchules, where they fill the fountains with wine each October.

On the slopes of the grand Sierra Nevada Mountains is a hilly region known as the La Alpujarras. It covers about 70KM of alpine vegetation and rocky outcrops interrupted by fertile terrace farmlands and orchards with natural springs that are fed by the snow capped peaks. Amidst these are tiny whitewashed villages that were inhabited by the Moors in the 14th Century running away from the Granada Inquisition. These villages have Mudéjar churches and houses with flat roofs and unique chimney pots, and are lined with beautiful flowers. Alpujarras is just 50 KM away from Granada and a perfect location for a day trip to admire a unique ecosystem and culture.
The highest village in mainland Spain, it sits precipitously on the Trevélez Valley at 1,476m. Best known for its mountain-air cured ham, jamón Serrano, it is also the base for trekking up to Mt. Mulhacen.
Gateway to Las Alpujarras, Lanjarón is easily recognizable thanks to its mineral water that is packaged and sold across Spain. Soak in the Balneario (spa) to benefit from the properties of minerals and sip on incredible wine.
Nestled in the Guadalfeo River valley, Orgiva is the largest town in the Alpujarras and is surrounded by olive, lemon and orange groves. The town is popular among European settlers and has a lively community.
One of the white-washed villages, Pampaneira is situated the lowest on the Barranco de Poqueira. A picturesque village, it has a 16th Century Mudejar church and a Tibetan Monastery on the outskirts.
The white village of Bubión contrasts against the green slopes of the Poqueira gorge. A tiny village, it is on the GR7 walking trail and is used as a base for hiking in the Sierra Nevada peaks and the Alpujarras.
The highest of the white villages, Capileira offers grand views of the Poqueira valley and the Sierra Nevada peaks. The village is best known for the springs that crisscross the streets and were a contribution of the Moorish wisdom.
A tiny village in the Alpujarras its claim to fame is the mineral water waterfall – La Fuente Agria – which is known to cure Anaemia! The village itself is pretty with a village square and narrow streets lined with flowers.
Made up of two areas, Bérchules and Alcúta, the village is the source of rivers Guadalfeo, Chico and Grande making it a fertile area with orchards. Bérchules is a typically Alpujarrena village with whitewashed houses and flat slate roofs.
Cádiar is the best village to observe Morisco heritage and culture. Filled with monuments and ruins from the past, it also has a rich crafts industry of ceramics. You can take home handmade souvenirs at a good bargain from this village.
Swish and ski across the Sierra Nevada slopes

Glam up your home with an Alpujarran Rug

The villages of Alpujarras are known for their handicrafts and the best souvenir you can pick from here is a colorful handwoven woollen rug. Other items to pick include ceramics and baskets.
Guided Vs Self-Guided Tour
The Alpujarras region is beautiful mountain country and its 50 plus villages exhibit a unique culture and architecture. A self guided tour will help you explore this fully and even include hiking the trails. Ideally, you can spend a couple of days in Alpujarras exploring it properly. But, if you are a visitor in Spain for a short time and don’t want to miss out on the best of it then you should take a guided tour of the Alpujarras. With a guided tour you get the services of English or Spanish speaking guide, a comfortable vehicle to travel in and perks like tasting sessions of cheese and chocolates!

Best Time to Visit Alpujarras
The best time to visit Alpujarras region would be from April to June and September to October. These months experience mild and pleasant temperature and are ideal for walking and hiking through the slopes. The busiest time in Alpujarras would be summer; however it’s also very hot and might not be suitable for walking in the tough terrain. If you are keen on skiing and checking out the winter scenery than December and January are the best time to visit Alpujarras.
The region of Alpujarras is just 50 KM away from Granada and makes for a fantastic day trip to explore the alpine countryside. If you opt for an organized tour from Granada to Alpujarras , this is how a typical itinerary would look like.
Your English or Spanish speaking guide will pick you up at 9:00 AM and start your journey in a comfortable vehicle. You will first reach Lanjarón, also known as the Gateway to Las Alpujarras, it is famous for its mineral water springs. You will find yourself breathing clean mountain air and drinking the purest water here. After Lanjarón, you will continue towards Pampaneira at the base of the Poqueira Gorge.
Pampaneira is one of the trio of whitewashed villages that stand out on the Gorge slopes and have been locally described as ‘white lumps of sugar’. In Pampaneira you will admire the 16th century Mudejar church ‘Iglesia de Santa Cruz’ and then move on to the next destination, Bubión.
Bubión offers better views of the Alpujarras and you will take a stroll through the narrow streets and admire the distinct architecture of the homes here. Your next and last destination is Capileira, the highest of the villages in Alpujarras. The village offers breathtaking views of the valley and the Sierra Nevada peaks.
At each of the villages you will sample local delicacies like cheese, homemade chocolate, and ham. After Capileira you will begin the descent and head back to Granada around 5:00 PM.
As you will notice the terrain is mountainous and public transport is more irregular, hence if you wish to do this sample itinerary by public transport you might end up missing out on one or two of the villages. The best way to truly enjoy the Alpujarras region is by taking a guided tour!
![alpujarras day trip Alpujarras de Granada](https://cdn-imgix-open.headout.com/blog/Granada+/Granada+to+Alpujarras+Day+Trip/pots-2842181_1920.jpg?auto=compress&fm=pjpg&w=1920&h=1150&fit=min&q=80&crop=faces)
- Hiking is a great way to explore the region and many travelers head to Capileira, the highest village and then trek all the way down to Pampaneira. This way you can take the off-road trails and enjoy the scenic spots that offer views of the valley and on a clear day even offer views of the ocean!
- Sunscreen and protection in the form of hats, scarves or caps is must as the direct sunlight can be harsher in the hilly region. Also, ensure you are using good walking shoes, as even on a guided tour there will be a lot of walking through the steep streets.
- Orgiva is a village in the Alpujarras and has witnessed an infusion of bohemian culture in the past few years. You can find weekly markets and souvenir shops there selling handmade crafts and eclectic accessories.
- Mountain goat, plato Alpujarras, chicken with almond sauce, Serrano ham and Iberian pork, Cocido Alpujarreño, and Migas Alpujarreñas are some of the food to be enjoyed in Alpujarras. You can eat at some of these restaurants - El Corral del Castano , Restaurante La Tapa , and Meson Haraicel .
- You will get a paper guide on your guided tour, with all the spots in Las Alpujarras and it is ideal for free walking the villages. Keep a lookout for the viewpoints and admire the Moorish architecture, including the unique water channels that pass through the village and the terrace farms, ensuring irrigation at such heights.
- If you plan on skiing or trekking on the higher slopes ensure you go with an expert guide as the terrain can be tricky and unfamiliar for amateurs.

Full-day Trip to the Alpujarra in Granada
La Alpujarra de Granada (sometimes Las Alpujarras de Granada ) is a mountainous district in Southern Spain, which stretches south from the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada in the autonomous region of Andalusia .
This excursion not only includes interesting cultural elements but is also recommended for those interested in nature and landscape since it is placed in the area of Sierra Nevada mountains on the Mediterranean.
The climate variety here has made the Alpujarras one of the most important areas in Europe for botanists, because of the variety of species to be found.
We must also take into account the important Moorish cultural heritage, the characteristic landscape made up of small white villages with their earthen, flat-roofed houses, and their small terraces cut into the mountainside for farming, some of which are over 2.000 metres above sea level. All of these aspects combine to make a visit to this unique area a must.
We will visit Lanjarón , a famous spa town with its medical waters, and Órgiva , the central town of this mountainous region. We also visit a series of picturesque villages such as Carataunas, Pampaneira, Pitres, Portugos with its Fuente Agria or bitter spring water, and Trevélez , the highest village in Spain. We shall then continue through Bubión to Capileira , where a typical lunch will be served.
- Pickup and return to your hotel in the center of Granada. (Only hotels located in downtown Granada)
- Official tour guide
- Lunch local food called “plato alpujarreño” in Capileira (optional).

In this experience, we can expect: gastronomy, tradition, ways of life, nature, the incredible hydraulic infrastructure, and much more. Its streets and squares. Its fountains, washhouses, and tinaos.
After crossing the Tablate Bridge, already within the Alpujarra region, the first village where we will stop for breakfast is Lanjarón, famous for the quality of its medicinal waters, which give rise to one of Spain’s most highly-rated spas.
Lanjarón possesses the essential characteristic that defines the image of Alpujarran villages: a unique architecture in its houses, perfectly adapted to the rugged terrain and the climate of the area, arranged along narrow streets where the memory of its Moorish past endures.
The excursion continues towards Pampaneira, in the heart of the Poqueira Ravine, still retaining most of the distinctive features of the region. During the visit, we recognize its narrow and steep cobbled streets with water channels in the center, its traditional white houses with terraces and tinaos, or its looms and local craft shops.
Capileira, with its location and an altitude of almost one and a half thousand meters, offers us the best views of the ravine from the various viewpoints it possesses. From here, we can also enjoy spectacular panoramas of the peaks of Mulhacén and Veleta.
In Capileira, scattered throughout the village, we find several viewpoints, of which it is said that on sunny days, we can see all the way to the mountains of Africa.
As an optional extension to a 6-hour excursion, we can enjoy an additional two hours in the heart of the Alpujarra, starting with the town of Pórtugos, where it is not the facades and flower pots that give fame to the village, but the iron-rich waters of the Fuente Agria, with a curious “spicy” taste and great health benefits (liver, stomach, intestines, kidneys). After drinking the waters, we must not miss the Chorrerón de Pórtugos, the beautiful waterfall we will find on the other side of the road. To reach it, you have to descend no less than 80 steps.
As the end of our excursion, we visit Trevélez, the highest village in Spain and home to the highest vineyards in Europe. It produces the famous Jamón de Trevélez, cured at high altitudes and enjoying Protected Geographical Indication status due to its extremely high quality and flavor.
