About Sirius Travel

Sirius Travel is named for Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Through time, Sirius has shone faithfully in the winter sky when the nights are their longest. Following Orion, the hunter, Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Major – Orion’s hunting dog – always at the hunter’s knee. Once a year Sirius disappears in the light of the sun only to reappear in the early morning close to the summer solstice.

ECLIPSE TOURS

Our eclipse tours are organized to observe total solar eclipses and annular eclipses throughout the world.   We choose accommodations and viewing sites close to the central path of an eclipse. In addition, we offer observations of the night skies through telescopes. Click on the link here to see our latest eclipse tour offerings.

OBSERVATORY and AURORA TOURS

Our astronomy tours offer private access to some of the largest optical and radio telescopes in the world.  We go behind the scenes to meet astronomers who are peering deeper into the universe than ever before.  In addition to visiting professional observatories, we often include stargazing in the evenings using large amateur telescopes.  Royal Adventures has designed astronomy tours for clients such as the Smithsonian, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, McDonald Observatory, University of Wisconsin and others. Many of our tours have been led by some of the foremost astronomers in the United States and have returned to rave reviews. Our sites for astronomy tours include Chile, South Africa, and Australia as well as tours to see the northern lights or aurora in Iceland.

ARCHAEOASTRONOMY TOURS

Our archaeoastronomy destinations include Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru. Investigate how ancient civilizations used the movements of the stars and planets coupled with those of the sun and the moon to measure interlocking time intervals that created a standard measure for time. Explore the ancient Maya, Aztec, Olmec, and Teotihuacan civilizations and their astronomical innovations that evolved to the way we understand time today. For example, the Incas worshipped the Sun with light and shadow effects in their constructs commonly denoting such events as the solstices and equinoxes. They used these orientations, as well as solar pillars, to mark time passage for purposes of crop management and religious festivals. An ancient solar observatory at Chankillo, Peru has been identified as the oldest in the Americas with alignments covering the entire solar year.  Royal Adventures can design a tour featuring archaeoastronomical sites and talks with experts who can explain their significance to ancient civilizations.

I got a history tour of the Cincinnati Observatory before the great solar eclipse of 2024

T he total solar eclipse coming April 8 is drawing everyone’s attention to the sky with renewed interest in astronomy. Count me among them.

A recent visit to the Cincinnati Observatory in Mount Lookout reminded me why it is one of the city’s most precious treasures. The observatory, designed by renowned Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford in 1873, is described as “a picturesque jewel-box of a building capped by a silver dome.” But it’s the historic telescopes, once among the largest in the country, that are the true gems.

John Ventre, the observatory historian, led my family on a tour of the facility and a peek through the extraordinary telescopes to view the universe. It was an awesome experience, a lesson in history and the marvel of ideas.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Ventre told us the history of the observatory as we went along. He is the co-author, along with Stella Cottam, of a new book, “Cincinnati Observatory: Its Critical Role in the Birth and Evolution of Astronomy in America.” It is presented as a textbook, but it’s an engaging read about some fascinating Cincinnati history.

Our History: 1800s Cincinnati comes to life in this collection of rare photos

Cincinnati built America’s first major observatory

In the 1840s, there were about 130 operating observatories in Europe, but only a dozen or so in America, all of them small, private or associated with a school rather than being professional, said Ventre.

Everything changed due to the efforts of one man: Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel.

Mitchel was born about 1809 in Union County, Kentucky, and was raised in Lebanon, Ohio. Educated at West Point, he returned to the area and in 1836 was offered a position at Cincinnati College to teach mathematics, civil engineering and mechanics. With a keen interest in astronomy, he added lectures on that as well. They were so popular that students started bringing their families along to hear him.

“He was a dynamic lecturer, not common for the day,” Ventre said.

Mitchel also used some clever visual aids. A woman in the audience recalled: “Mr. Mitchel used to prepare his own illustrations by picking out the constellation in thin paper with a large pin; he would nail the paper to a frame and put a candle behind it, and then explain the heavens to us.”

In 1842, Mitchel gave a lecture on the solar system. The overflowing crowds led to it moving to Wesley Chapel on Fifth Street, then the largest venue in the West, seating 1,200.

At the lecture, Mitchel proposed the construction of an observatory in Cincinnati. He hoped to raise $7,500 ( about $240,000 today ) by selling shares in the Cincinnati Astronomical Society for $25 each ( $800 now ).

The 300 stockholders included a cross-section of Cincinnatians: attorneys, doctors, carpenters, teachers, blacksmiths, clerks and a steamboat captain.

John Quincy Adams laid the cornerstone in 1843

The Cincinnati Astronomical Society, with Judge Jacob Burnet as president, sent Mitchel to Europe with $1,000 ( $32,000 now ) to purchase a telescope.

He found an 11-inch Merz and Mahler lens in Munich, Bavaria, that had been ground but not installed. Mitchel had it fitted into a brass and mahogany telescope, then shipped it back to Cincinnati. Wealthy landowner Nicholas Longworth donated 4 acres on Mount Ida (now known as Mount Adams) to place the observatory on a high spot.

Mitchel invited former President John Quincy Adams, who had advocated for a national observatory, to come to Cincinnati to lay the cornerstone . The 76-year-old took a 1,000-mile journey by canal boat and carriage to Cincinnati for the occasion.

On Nov. 9, 1843, a parade marched up the hill in a torrential downpour to place the cornerstone, but it was too wet for Adams’ speech. He gave it the next day at Wesley Chapel. Ventre and Cottam’s book reprints the entire text of what was the former president’s last public speech, filling up 36 pages. In gratitude to Adams’ visit, the citizens renamed Mount Ida in his honor – Mount Adams .

“The telescope (Mitchel) acquired matched or surpassed all the other telescopes in Europe except one,” Ventre said.

On April 14, 1845, when the Merz and Mahler telescope saw “first light,” an astronomy term for its first view, it was the largest telescope in the Western Hemisphere.

Cincinnati Observatory is the oldest operating professional observatory in the U.S.

Relocating the observatory to Mount Lookout

Within a few decades, the Cincinnati air was foul with soot and smoke from the growing city. So plans were made to move the observatory. First the then-new University of Cincinnati, which was organized in 1871 , acquired it. With UC taking ownership of the observatory, telescope and records, the Cincinnati Astronomical Society ceased to exist.

John Kilgour, a banker whose father was a charter member of the society, donated 4 acres of land near Hyde Park for the observatory. The area was then dubbed Mount Lookout. He also gave $10,000 ( $259,000 today ) to build a new observatory, a Greek Revival design by Hannaford.

Construction of the new observatory began in 1873 and it opened in 1875. The original cornerstone laid by Adams was set into the corner of the new building, where it is today.

A second, larger telescope with a 16-inch Alvan Clark and Son refractor, was bought in 1904 and installed in the observatory. A second building, named after Mitchel, was built for the original microscope.

Travel back in time: What was it like to live in Cincinnati in the 1870s?

Saving the historic observatory for the future

In the 1990s, the Cincinnati Observatory was nearly history.

The observatory buildings were in deplorable shape, Ventre said. There were rumors UC wanted to close the observatory, sell the land and put up condos. Concerned neighbors and citizens, including Ventre, formed a Save the Observatory group. UC decided to keep the observatory and offered to pony up money for waterproofing, the costliest part of the $2.5 million restoration.

“The general goal was to make it a working, functional late-1800 astronomical observatory and restore everything as close as practicable to its working condition,” Ventre said.

Today you can learn about the history of the observatory at a small museum and go up to look through the eyepiece of the telescopes for yourself.

What’s remarkable is both telescopes are virtually the same as they were originally. There is no electricity needed. The aluminum shudders of the dome are opened for viewing by pulling a rope. Everything is carefully balanced and turns on gears.

Ventre explained one feature of the large Alvin Clark telescope that much impressed me for its ingenuity.

“There’s about a 400-pound weight in the pier of the telescope,” he said. “By cranking up the weight and letting gravity pull down or drop the weight, that’s kinetic energy. That energy, via various series of chains and gears, moves the telescope at the rate of one revolution per day in the opposite direction that the Earth rotates. Therefore, the byproduct of that, as you point the telescope at a celestial object, the telescope will mechanically track and stay on that target as the Earth turns on its axis in rotation.”

“Even today, it’s a precision machine,” Ventre added. “It’s awesome.”

When my family and I had the opportunity to observe the universe through the telescopes – the same way Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel did more than 175 years ago – we saw the moon, crystal clear, with perfect circles cratering the surface. We saw caramel-colored Jupiter and four of its moons, approximately 400 million miles away.

Looking through the past to see the future.

The 11-inch Merz and Mahler telescope that saw first light in 1845, then the largest telescope in the Western Hemisphere, is still in operation at the Cincinnati Observatory.

These National Parks Are Hosting Astronomy Festivals in 2024

Get outside, ditch the light pollution and marvel at the cosmos on these protected public lands

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Milky Way over a dark landscape

National parks lure millions of travelers each year with their otherworldly rock formations, abundant wildlife and thought-provoking archaeological sites. But because they’re often located far from big cities and have very little light pollution , they’re also ideal destinations for stargazing.

Many national parks are now using the tagline “half the park is after dark” to remind visitors to stay up late and appreciate unobstructed views of the cosmos. As an added bonus, stargazing is a chance to experience these serene public lands while nearly everyone else is asleep—which is especially helpful at some of the most popular national parks .

You’ll often find year-round astronomy programming to help you make the most of the dark skies, no matter when you visit. But as you plot out your summer travel plans, you may consider adding some of these national park stargazing festivals to your calendar. They often feature guest lecturers from institutions like NASA, the chance to look through powerful telescopes and other fun, interactive ways to learn about outer space—and, perhaps just as importantly, bond with fellow astrophiles.

Grand Canyon National Park — June 1–8

You can still catch the final weekend of Grand Canyon National Park’s annual “ star party ,” with events taking place on both the North and South rims. On the South Rim, which is the most popular side of the Grand Canyon, enjoy evening programs in front of the visitor center, including a talk from Lauren Camp , the poet laureate of New Mexico, and a lecture on planet formation by Taylor Kutra, an astronomer at Arizona’s Lowell Observatory. On the North Rim, the line-up includes discussions about eclipses, Milky Way photography and how to become an amateur astronomer on a budget.

And if you can’t make it, don’t worry. The park offers year-round astronomy programming—so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to marvel at the cosmos during your next trip out.

Bryce Canyon National Park — June 5–8

Bryce Canyon National Park’s annual astronomy festival is also this weekend, with astrophotography workshops, lectures from NASA scientists and even solar telescopes you can use to safely look at the sun during the day. One lecture even explores our attempts to detect and contact extraterrestrial life. The 35,835-acre swath of southern Utah, which protects otherworldly, reddish-orange sandstone formations known as “ hoodoos ,” has been an International Dark Sky Park since 2019 .

Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park — June 7–9

Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park are teaming up for the third year to offer the Southeast Utah AstroFest . This celestial bash, which takes place at all three locations, includes ranger-led programs, telescope viewing and other family-friendly activities.

Badlands National Park — July 5–7

Forget fireworks. Stars, planets, nebulas, meteors and other dazzling celestial spectacles are all you need to celebrate the long Fourth of July holiday weekend at Badlands National Park.

Situated in southwest South Dakota, the 244,000-acre park is once again hosting its annual astronomy festival in partnership with the NASA South Dakota Space Grant Consortium. This year’s lineup includes guided tours of a scale model of the planets, solar telescope viewing sessions, a hands-on paper rocket launch and guest speakers discussing subjects like the James Webb Space Telescope and Mars geology.

Rocky Mountain National Park — August 2–3

You’ll need a timed entry reservation if you want to visit Rocky Mountain National Park during the day this summer, which can require a little forethought and planning. But, at night, you can drive right in without jumping through any extra hoops.

The park, located in northern Colorado, is hosting a series of astronomy events on several Fridays and Tuesdays throughout the summer, featuring ranger-led programming and telescope viewing. Park staffers are still ironing out the details, but they’re also organizing an astronomy festival the first weekend of August.

Voyageurs National Park — August 8–10

For the third year, the nonprofit Voyageurs Conservancy is hosting a star party at Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The exact lineup of events is still being finalized, but you can expect telescope sessions, s’mores around the campfire, constellation tours, a film screening and more. The dates also align with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower , one of the year’s most highly anticipated celestial events.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park — September 5–7

People setting up telescopes against a backdrop of a starry night sky

Head to one of Colorado’s lesser-known national parks, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, in early September for three days of telescope viewing, guest speakers and general appreciation of the dark night sky, which the park calls a “threatened resource.” Known as AstroFest , this annual gathering also includes activities in Curecanti National Recreation Area and the town of Montrose. Spanning 30,750 acres, Black Canyon of the Gunnison earned its dark sky designation in 2015 .

Great Basin National Park — September 5–7

Located in east-central Nevada, Great Basin National Park protects 77,180 acres of limestone caverns, 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine trees , towering peaks and glacier-carved landscapes. It’s also an International Dark Sky Park, thanks to its remote location and its unique basin topography, which helps block out any artificial light from distant metropolises. Another reason to visit? It’s the only national park in the country with a research-grade observatory, called the Great Basin Observatory (GBO).

The park’s annual astronomy festival will feature Milky Way photography workshops, observatory tours, arts and crafts, constellation talks and to-be-announced guest speakers.

Joshua Tree National Park — October 4–5

Milky Way behind rock and tree

Fall brings cooler temperatures to Joshua Tree National Park, the 792,623-acre park in Southern California that protects the Mojave and the Colorado desert ecosystems. The milder weather is perfect for hiking, climbing, backpacking and other daytime pursuits. But it’s also ideal for staying up late to admire the inky black skies above. Tickets for the park’s annual night sky festival —which doubles as a fundraiser for Sky’s the Limit Observatory & Nature Center and Joshua Tree Residential Education Experience—often sell out, so be sure to snag some when they go on sale June 15.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Is moscow or st petersburg more beautiful.

Moscow and St Petersburg are two completely different cities and difficult to compare. Both are beautiful in their own way. Moscow’s sprawling cityscape reflects centuries of history in a mixture of architectural styles - gilded cupolas of medieval Russian churches merge with Stalinist monoliths and towering glass skyscrapers, and cobble-stone alleys balance grand boulevards. St Petersburg’s centre was laid out over a matter of decades, its regular and harmonious city plan lined with Neoclassicist, Art Nouveau and Baroque masterpieces, intersected with meandering canals. If you can’t choose between the two, check out our best combined Moscow and St Petersburg tours.

What is the best time to visit Moscow and St Petersburg?

A trip to St Petersburg or Moscow at any time of year will be enjoyable. Museums and galleries are much less busy during winter, accommodation is significantly cheaper, and you can enjoy outside activities such as skiing or sleigh rides. Exploring the cities is more enjoyable in the warmer months, and St Petersburg especially beckons during the White Nights. Whenever you decide to travel, check out which national holidays are on – Pancake Week, Victory Day, and City Day are just some of the festivities you can experience. ‘A little oasis’: What travelers are missing by skipping Great Basin National Park

astronomy travel tours

It’s going to be a big week at Great Basin National Park .

The park near the Nevada and Utah border is expected to be one of the best places in the country to see the annular eclipse on Oct. 14. That’s when the moon blocks out a large portion of the sun, leaving what looks like a “ring of fire” in the sky.

“Something like 96%, 98% of the sun will be covered where we are, which is about as good as it's going to get,” Bradley Mills, lead astronomy ranger at Great Basin, told USA TODAY.

The park is hosting a series of events leading up to the eclipse and preparing for a spike in visitors. Typically, Great Basin is among the least visited national parks in the country, but there’s plenty to see beyond the eclipse.

Here’s what travelers should know about Great Basin, the latest in USA TODAY’s yearlong national park series :

What is special about the Great Basin National Park?

Great Basin National Park spans 77,000 acres of the much larger Great Basin , which stretches from Utah to California and up to Oregon.

The park boasts one of the highest points in Nevada, Wheeler Peak , and the state’s longest cave system, Lehman Caves .

“It’s got some of the biggest density of cave features of almost any cave,” Mills said. “You get some really unique things in there that you don’t get in other caves, like cave shields .

The park is also home to some of the oldest trees in the world, Bristlecone pines , which have been around for thousands of years.

“We're like a little oasis,” Mills said.

Great Basin’s remote location also makes it an excellent place to stargaze without light pollution, which the park further limits by using red lights and motion-activated lights at night, as well as glow-in-the-dark curbs, so fewer lights are needed.

When can you see the Milky Way at Great Basin National Park?

“We're one of the darkest national parks and one of the darkest spots in the country because we are so far from everything,” Mills said. “On a really, really good night, you can see thousands and thousands of stars. In the summertime, the Milky Way is just stretching right above your head.”

The park is an International Dark Sky Park .

What is the closest town to the Great Basin National Park?

Great Basin National Park is located in eastern Nevada, less than 5 miles away from the small town of Baker, which has fewer than 250 residents, according to U.S. Census data.

The nearest major airport, Salt Lake City International Airport, is 234 miles away. Cedar City Regional Airport is closer, at 142 miles away, but only has regional service from Delta Air Lines.

“We are one of the most isolated national parks, which is one of the best benefits for us,” Mills said. “It's why we have such good night skies, but it's also why we have so few people. It’s because not everybody is ready for this.”

“We are so, so remote,” he added. “You’ve got to show up with plenty of gas. You’ve got to be ready with plenty of water in case your car breaks down on one of these long roads. You’ve got to make sure you have enough food … You need to be prepared for a trip here.”

‘It’s pretty special’: Why Glacier Bay National Park is worth going out of the way for

Do you need a reservation for Great Basin National Park?

Neither a reservation nor an entry fee is required to visit Great Basin.

However, reservations are required for ranger-led tours of Lehman Caves. Tours of the Grand Palace cost $15 for visitors ages 16 and up and $8 for visitors ages 5 through 15. Tours of the Lodge Room cost $12 for visitors ages 16 and up and $6 for children ages 5 through 15. Discounts are available for Interagency Pass holders. Cave tour reservations may be made on Recreation.gov .

How many days should I spend at Great Basin National Park?

“If you're someone who's very into hiking, getting out and kind of being able to experience some solitude, I'd say three, four days,” Mills said.

He recommended one to two days for more casual travelers.

“That way you can get up, do all the hikes at the top of the scenic drive, which are some short nice, easy areas getting into some alpine lakes, letting you see the bristlecone pines,” he said. “Then another day would give you full access to being able to do all the ranger programs – get a cave tour, go to a camp campfire program, go do one of the astronomy programs.”

Visitors should note Wheeler Peak Scenic Road is the park’s only paved road and can close at any time of year due to snow, according to the park.

What is the best month to visit Great Basin National Park?

“Late September, early October is wonderful,” Mills said. “We start to get the fall colors, and you can start to get a different, quieter experience out here because during the summertime is when we get the vast majority of our visitors.”

He said the weather is perfect this time of year, though snowstorms are possible.

Are there hot springs in Great Basin National Park?

“There's a couple of what we would call warm springs,” Mills said. “Smaller, little pools (where) the water’s like 80 degrees, so it feels more like a heated pool. … You get in, and it still feels cold.”

He noted most of Nevada’s hot springs are several hours away.

Who are the Native people of Great Basin?

“Several distinct tribes have historically occupied the Great Basin; the modern descendants of these people are still here today,” according to the park’s website. “They are the Western Shoshone (a sub-group of the Shoshone), the Goshute, the Ute, the Paiute (often divided into Northern, Southern, and Owens Valley), and the Washoe.”

This Sunny Spanish City Is Known for Amazing Tapas and a ‘Magical Vibe’ — and It Won’t Break the Bank

Here's everything you need to know to plan a perfect trip to Granada, Spain.

Best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Granada is about as captivating a city as they come. The city, tucked at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Spain's Andalusia region, is filled with more historic charm than perhaps one place deserves. Here, travelers can walk through winding cobblestone streets, drink in views of Moorish architecture, and stroll through buildings dating back to the 14th century, all within the span of an afternoon.

"Granada is a gem filled with history, culture, and stunning scenery," Tim Hentschel, the CEO and co-founder of HotelPlanner , shares with Travel + Leisure . "Granada is also known for its delicious cuisine, particularly its tapas culture. You can enjoy various mouthwatering dishes while exploring the city's vibrant culinary scene. And what is especially remarkable is that Granada doesn't break the bank like other big Spanish cities, but it still oozes authentic charm. The locals are friendly, the vibe is lively, and your wallet stays happy without missing out on that classic Spanish charm."

And, as Alicia Benito, a Spanish language and culture specialist at Promova , notes, it's a place where you really can kick up your heels, too.

"It's like the perfect mix of history, amazing sights, and a very lively culture. Also, the people there really know how to live," Benito says. "There are cool street markets everywhere, cozy tapas bars on every corner, and passionate flamenco shows in Sacromonte. It's just got this magical vibe that grabs you and doesn't let go."

Not only that, but Granada is also a destination that experiences some 3,000 hours of sunshine a year , practically ensuring at least one beautiful day while you're there. Here's how to plan the perfect trip to Granada.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

Stay in a former monastery when you book a room at Parador de Granada.

Explore the stunning Alhambra.

See a zambra flamenco show in Sacromonte.

Go for a tapas and wine crawl around the city’s best bars and restaurants.

Visit in the spring or fall for beautiful weather and fewer crowds.

Best Hotels & Resorts

Hospes palacio de los patos.

Hospes Palacio de los Patos is the perfect representation of Granada. It's a 19th-century palace turned modern retreat located in the heart of the city. Here, guests can unwind in stately rooms with soaring ceilings and royal-ready beds, relax in the Bodyna Spa, or dine on local dishes — including plenty of tapas — on its outdoor terrace.

Parador de Granada

Sleep amid history at Parador de Granada , located within Alhambra's grounds. The former monastery has been transformed into an inviting escape with rooms overlooking the Generalife's lush gardens. It's a modest accommodation, but one that is ideal for those looking for a quieter stay and access to utmost tranquility.

Hotel Casa 1800 Granada

Pining for even more history? Then book a stay at Hotel Casa 1800 Granada . As the name implies, the hotel was once a private home, built in the late 16th century, and it maintains much of its charm — including the original facade. Every room here is unique, but all offer historical touches, including original balconies, shutters, and frescos.

Carmen de la Alcubilla del Caracol

Get a room with a view at Carmen de la Alcubilla del Caracol . The boutique hotel's privileged position atop a hill provides spectacular views from every window of both the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Spring for a room with a terrace for an unforgettable stay.

Best Things to Do

Explore the alhambra..

We're not sure it's possible to visit Granada without visiting the Alhambra , often regarded as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and art. "The number one must-see is definitely the Alhambra palace," Benito shares. "It's like the crown jewel of Granada, with its amazing Islamic architecture and beautiful gardens. You can spend hours exploring the different palaces and courtyards, and the views from up there are incredible."

Visit the Granada Cathedral.

The Granada Cathedral , also known as the Cathedral of the Incarnation, is a stunning Roman Catholic church dating back to the 16th century. Outside, travelers can spend hours looking at its imposing arches and pillars, while inside, they'll be in awe of the spectacular dome and frescos lining the walls. Guests can come to worship or go on a cultural tour to learn more about its fascinating history.

See a flamenco show in Sacromonte.

Immerse yourself in local culture with a flamenco show in Granada's historic Sacromonte district . Here, you'll find a unique form of flamenco known as zambra, passed down for generations. It's emotional and rhythmic, and it will leave you fully inspired.

Check out the Parque de las Ciencias.

Have a day filled with fun and science with a visit to the Parque de las Ciencias . Here, guests can learn about everything from the human body to the outer edges of space all in one afternoon. Don't miss the outdoor astronomy garden, where you can play with all the observation instruments.

Stroll through the Albaicín.

"If you're into history and culture, don't miss wandering around the Albaicín neighborhood, where you feel like stepping back in time with all these narrow streets and cool Moorish architecture," Benito says. Indeed, the neighborhood is known as Granada's oldest and most traditional neighborhood. The historic Moorish quarter is a melting pot of cultural influences, including Iberians, Greeks, Romans, and Visigoths, who have all passed through these streets, just like you.

Bodegas Castañeda

Find a traditional atmosphere matched by a traditional tapas menu at Bodegas Castañeda . Go for one of its famous platters that come with a taste of everything, including its tabla fria , with two croquettes, a Russian salad, tortilla española (a potato omelet), ham, cheese, and chicken. They offer plenty of wines by the glass, but make sure to check out the Wine of the Week menu for something special.

Bar Los Diamantes

Famed for its fried fish tapas, Bar Los Diamantes is a hit among both locals and tourists alike. Yes, it's crowded, but that's because it's just that good. There are several locations around the city, but no matter which one you visit, you'll be delighted by the fried prawns, calamari, or daily specials.

La Sitarilla

La Sitarilla , a family-run restaurant, is one more spot where you can find plenty of traditional bites. Go ahead, get the pig feet. But also get the meatballs, the fries, or whatever else is offered to you alongside each beer or wine you order.

According to Benito, the best time to visit Granada "really depends on what you're looking for. But generally speaking, spring and autumn are probably the best bet." That, Benito says, is when the weather is at its best, as it's not too hot nor too cold, and the crowds are at their thinnest, allowing you to explore more and wait in line less. "But honestly, Granada is beautiful year-round, so whenever you go, you're going to have an amazing time," Benito adds.

Spring also offers travelers the chance to take part in festivals like the Cruces de Mayo , celebrated on the third of May. And in the fall, guests can swing by the Granada Film Festival to check out the latest cinematic talents or visit all September long to honor Virgen de las Angustias , the patron saint of the city.

By plane: The nearest airport is Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport , located about 12 miles outside the city. The airport offers mostly domestic flights and a few international connections (most flights connect through Spain's larger cities, Madrid and Barcelona).

By train: Travelers can also make their way to Granada by train from both Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid to Granada takes about four hours, while the Barcelona to Granada train takes about six. By car: Anyone can get to Granada by car as well, as the city is well-connected to major highways traveling to and from Madrid, Seville , and other coastal cities.

By car: Renting a car in Granada is simple. Several major rental car companies have outposts here, including Sixt, Europcar, and Avis. Having a car will allow you to explore the outer regions of the city and into the mountains, but be warned — parking in the heart of town can be difficult.

By public transit: Buses are the main form of public transport in Granada. The system covers most of the city, making it simple to hop on and off between neighborhoods. A regular bus ticket runs at about $1.50. See the map and full fare schedule here .

By taxi: Taxis are also easy to come by throughout Granada. As Love Granada explains, there are two types of fares — daytime rates for weekdays and nighttime rates for late weeknights and holidays. Just like in cities around the world, you can hail a cab on the street by throwing up your hand in the air and by trying to spot any taxi with a green light on its roof (which indicates it's open for a ride).
