From day spas to gyms to finding a nutritional spot for lunch, we have you covered so you can stay healthy, fit and glowing while visiting this beautiful country.

Intelligent Strength

One reviewer on TripAdvisor declared this space in Vienna "the best gym in the world". If you want an amazing gym experience with every possible bit of equipment you can imagine then look no further than "Das Gym" Intelligent Strength. You can feast on the free weights, try calisthenics or even have a protein shake or healthy meal in the gym cafe after your training session. This is also perfect if you're a novice as users are encouraged to drop their ego at the door as the gym's motto is "No Bullsh*t".

ADLER Lodge Ritten, South Tyrol

Just under a two-hour drive from Innsbruck this magical lodge and spa is nestled into the hills and boasts an Instagram-heaven heated infinity pool, forest saunas and an icy plunge pool. The suites and cabins all have their own in-room bio saunas and the decor is cow-hide and glass chic. Classes like yoga and meditation, as well as treatments, are available throughout the day and guests stay on an inclusive basis, normally for a minimum of three nights. On the menu expect fine wines and dishes with "a Mediterranean lightness and an Alpine earthiness" -- and all food allergies and intolerances are of course catered for. Though technically in Italy, South Tyrol, located in the Dolomite mountain range, was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918 so has a heavy Germanic influence -- the closest airport is in Austria, too.

Price : From 1,236 euro ($1,455) for three nights all-inclusive for a suite -- day passes are not available. Hours : Open all year round. Address : Lichtenstern 20, 39054 Oberbozen, Italy

Restaurants

A lover of cake but cake doesn't love you? You don't need to worry at this vegan raw bakery as the goodies are free from industrial sugar and are organic, gluten and lactose-free. The food is never heated, cooked or baked above a temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning that all vitamins, enzymes and trace elements are preserved. Try the avocado bread and the Simply Raw waffle -- a real fan favorite.

Price: A meal with a drink is approximately 16 euros ($19). Hours: Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Address: Drahtgasse 2, In the court, 1010. Vienna, Austria.

Another wellness-orientated dining experience and the menu is also fully free of lactose and gluten. Plus some options can be made vegan on request. If you are watching your waistline then go for the courgette noodles with prawns but maybe also sample the "For Wellbeing" dish -- egg dumplings. And make sure you try the coconut tonka beans panna cotta for dessert.

austria tourism wellness

Price: A main dish is approximately 12 euros ($14) and children can eat from 7 euro ($8). Hours: Monday to Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Address: Stumpergasse 61, 1060, Vienna, Austria.

This hot spot is known not only for wellness but also for its great service. Many following a gluten-free diet flock to this restaurant to not feel so isolated when it comes to menu items. It even offers a gluten-free schnitzel which is almost an impossible find in Austria. Wash it down with some organic wine which may lighten the hangover the next morning.

Price: Prices for a main course are approximately 21 euros ($25). Hours: Monday to Sunday 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. Address: Führichgasse 6, 1010, Vienna, Austria.

Bottom line

You may fear going to Austria won't benefit your waist and also feel you won't find the healthy food you have at home -- but this isn't true. From gyms that have it all to finding food that suits your dietary needs, Austria has it all. Be mindful though that some of these places are well-reviewed hotspots so advisable to book ahead in advance to avoid disappointment.

Austria's Top Spas to Visit

The space-age look comes to Switzerland via the steaming thermal basins of the Aqua Dome in the Ötztal valley

Spa culture is a key part of the Austrian way of life, and whether you want to lounge in a thermal pool in Bad Waltersdorf or enjoy a family-friendly wellness retreat in Bad Kleinkirchheim, these are Austria’s finest spa hotels, bookable with Culture Trip.

Best known for its clear mountain air, rejuvenating thermal springs and scenic surroundings, there’s no mystery as to why Austria has some of Europe’s best spas. Here, you can float in a saltwater pool overlooking the snow-capped mountains or even take part in a sauna cacao ceremony. Many of Austria’s alpine hotels place their spa facilities at the forefront – which is why we’ve created this rundown of the country’s best spa retreats.

1. Familotel Kaiserhof

Cars are parked outside the snow-covered, lodge like Familotel Kaiserhof

Set in the mountainous Berwang region, the Familotel Kaiserhof is the perfect setting for your next family break. A large indoor play area plus a kids’ club with activities that include petting zoo day trips are just a few of the highlights. The spa, meanwhile, is strictly an adults-only zone. Saunas range from a Hobbit-style Tyrolean sauna to a “herbal steam kitchen” and hayflower sweat bath. There are also a range of treatments on offer, including hot stone massages and sea salt body scrubs.

2. H2O Hotel-Therme-Resort

A curving indoor pool at H2O Hotel-Therme-Resort under a dome roof

Built around the famed thermal baths of Bad Waltersdorf, the H2O Hotel is a natural choice for a spa retreat. On top of the hotel’s huge in-house waterpark and swimming pools, the H20 has an exclusive, adults-only spa. Start with a fresh smoothie from the vitality bar before indulging in a massage treatment. Finish with a steam in the H20’s Sauna World, which includes scenic views across the Styrian mountains.

3. Tauern Spa

Stairs from a modern, wooden block building lead to an outdoor at Tauern Spa

Perched high in the Hohe Tauern National Park, Tauern Spa is set between the ski resorts of Zell-am-See and Kaprun. It’s a great choice if you want to pair an active holiday with a spa retreat. Inside, there are a staggering 11 indoor and outdoor pools (including an infinity pool with transparent walls), plus ten saunas and steam baths spread over more than 20,000sq m. Beyond the wellness facilities, there are options for skiing, hiking, yoga classes and even paragliding.

4. Gradonna Mountain Resort

Resort, Spa Hotel

A chillout room in the spa at Gradonna Mountain Resort with a circular seating space and cushioned loungers

Overlooking the Großglockner (known as the “Jewel of the Alps”), the Gradonna Mountain Resort sits pretty on the slopes of the Großglockner Kals-Matrei ski area. Minimalist rooms and chalets are designed to take in the natural surroundings, but the in-house spa is the true highlight here. While it’s not as sprawling as some on this list, it does feature several pools (including one for kids), five saunas, two steam rooms and a sunbathing terrace for the summer months. Facials, couples’ treatments and an excellent hairdresser are among the perks.

Wellness programmes lie at the heart of this hotel, situated in the Aussee region. Beyond the 52 luxury guest rooms, there is a range of wellness offerings. Spend the day hiking before unwinding in the outdoor jacuzzi, or delve more deeply into your body with a Medical Wellness programme, featuring holistic therapies – from brine baths and stress-relieving massages to personal trainer sessions. The food is wholesome and nutritious with plenty of variety for all dietary needs.

A Celebration of Spa Culture

Take me there, an austrian spa journey.

March 3, 2019

by Bernard Burt

austria tourism wellness

Austria is Alps in the west, Vienna and Salzburg in the east, and romantic spas. A collection of territories, Austria is roughly represented by nine Länder (provinces) with histories predating the modern Republic celebrating its 100 th  birthday in 2018. Home to a new breed of spa and sports resorts, where thermal waters, saunas, and herbal treatments mix with outdoor adventure, this is wellness without the sound of music.

Think of Austria through its west-east divide: The Alps and Tyrol in the west are 62 percent of its territory. Perched in the flatter eastern end, Salzburg and Vienna are tourist magnets. The cosmopolitan capital has one-third of Austria’s 8.7 million people.

Tucked into scenic valleys, vineyards, and farmland are resorts designed for health tourism: sports, springs, and romance. Packages from 320 euros include hikes, skiing, and kayaking, along with massage and mineral water soaks to make you look and feel your best.

The Start of an Austrian Spa Journey

Our spa journey took us to the Aqua Dome amid Tyrolean Alps, stylish Tauern Spa near Kaprun in Zell am See, and luxurious Therme Geinberg Spa Resort near Salzburg. All developed and managed by VAMED Vitality World, Vienna-based operator of eight Austrian resorts.

Passing Tyrol’s busy capital, Innsbruck, and main ski resort Kitsbuhl, we drove west into the snow-covered Alps to the Aqua Dome resort at Längenfeld. Green meadows and farmhouses line valleys, glaciers still open for skiing through June. Set in a pasture, the 400-bed Aqua Dome adds a touch of fantasy: bowl-shaped soaking pools, indoor pools, herbal and Finnish saunas. Thermal mineral water powers two levels of aquatics: family pool where kids frolic, and clothing-optional spot where couples discover each other nude.

Herbs from nearby mountains infuse spa treatments. I was offered a choice of full-body massage using pine sticks, warm forehead compress of pinewood, or honey-ginger oil, and beeswax facial. Whisked to dinner with hotel director Barbel Frey, we discussed how spa and sports are packaged and marketed. “With seventeen treatment rooms, we tailor each visitor’s experience,” Frey commented. Products used include Shiseido, Biosel, and Trehs.

Aqua Dome has the largest spa and beauty complex in Tyrol. The fitness center equipped by Cybex is staffed by sports scientists to develop personal training goals. Or sign up for classes and yoga. Currently on tap: Taiji Bailong Ball from China. www.aqua-dome.at

Worth a Detour

The Starkenberger brewery near Tarrenz, Tyrol, converted an obsolete fermentation cellar into a health-tourism destination. Brewer’s yeast, said to be good for your skin and circulation, makes yeasty soup for soaking. Tap unlimited free lager.  www.starkenberger.at

Drive east towards Salzburg for Austria’s crystal capital: Swarovski. The factory is not on any tour, visitors enjoy kitschy displays of crystal creations, lasers, shopping, and restaurant.  www.swarovski.at

A True Respite

austria tourism wellness

Looking for privacy? Therme Geinberg5, VAMED’s luxurious spa resort in upper Austria, features 21 villa suites with glass-walled sauna, dock on secluded pond, butler service, and exclusive bathing pools. Austria’s first hammam, Oriental World, offers body scrub, tea lounge. Work out at Technogym fitness center, relax at rooftop thermal pool. It’s all about you, says managing director Manfred Kalcher. The spa uses Ligne St. Barth and the grape-derived Vinoble product lines.

Chefs at Aquarium Restaurant create meals to match your mood and diet. Located amid farms, this private villa restaurant features fresh produce, fish, venison, and dairy products. Or you can go for day spa package at the resort hotel.  www.geinberg5.com

A Modern Spa Resort Nestled in a National Park

austria tourism wellness

Nature themes Tauern Spa in Kaprun, a cottage colony one hour from Salzburg. Situated in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the valley view from all 160 rooms and suites made for instant relaxation. But my “Glacier” spa treatment set up a dinner challenge: quail, halibut, and beef!

Managing director Karl Berghammer says new Salzburg cuisine complements the resort’s wellness focus: healthy, fresh, and light. There are 13 different saunas and steam baths, 10 swimming pools; Alpin Vital spa facials with the region’s natural products, 17 treatment rooms offer cosmetics by Dr. Spiller, Alpienne, and Reviderm; running trail through the village, including a castle, river, and village shops. Golfers have access to two 18-hole courses; ski buffs are on the glacier well into summer.  www.tauernspakaprun.com

VAMED’s eight thermal health resorts in Austria, and Budapest’s Aquaworld, demonstrate how innovative design and nature-oriented treatments keep spa culture alive.  www.vamed.com

The Healing Power of Nature: Finding Wellness in St. Johann, Austria

By Christopher Ludgate

There is this great symbiotic connection that happens when we combine wellness and nature. We inherit its holistic restorative effect, whether on a hike or just sitting by the water. Now, imagine being immersed in an environment that nurtures that balance as a way of life.

I am a true believer in travel as therapy, so when at last I landed on the prospect of a visit to Austria, I was pleasantly surprised to discover its abundance of wellness spas.

But what would prove more intriguing was my discovery of Austrian culture’s innate reverence for nature and wellbeing.

Vienna is often touted as the world’s most livable city and, interestingly, it is comprised of fifty-percent natural land (lots of it vineyards). So, after settling in at the city’s stylish Leo Grand, I wandered the green Leopoldstadt District and meandered museums, including the fascinating Sigmund Freud house.

Later, I spent an evening at the city’s Therme Wien spa complex to decompress, leaving the swimsuit behind, a la Austria style.

In the morning, I’d embark on a four-hour train ride high into the pastoral Alps to St. Johann in Salzburg for a real immersion.

I was ready for it.

The Old Town Kotor

The feeling of becoming increasingly remote set in, and the crisp fresh air reawakened my senses after shuttling through the lush Alpine hills.

I rolled into the pleasant nook of a town, noting specialty shops and the parks that revealed signs of idyllic autumn.

Soon, I arrived in a cluster of charmingly nestled chalet-type resort lodges. Upon checking in at Aktivhotel Alpendorf, reception briefed our small group of friends about its multilevel spa facilities.

This was no uptight bougie spa; Aktivhotel is designed to facilitate an immersive, comfortable wellness experience in Austria with services daily.

Aktivhotel came complete with a panoramic ‘sky-sauna’ and lounge perched high, serving up tea with views of pastures and sky for days. This same dreamy view was in direct view from the platform bed in my room that featured all-natural materials.

I stood there on my balcony with a deep breath and long stretch – awestruck, contented, and excited.

Bountiful baskets waited for us in the lobby, each filled with fresh local fare, naturally, along with a blanket. The local tourism board arranged a few activities for us, including this light picnic hike.

The Sky Sauna at Aktivhotel

A map with a path was provided, but true to hard-core explorers, we somehow went rogue, carving our own adventurous path until claiming our remote territory, collapsing, satisfied, and speechless with the beauty before us.

Another morning in Austria began with a light wellness hike to a nearby traditional European healer, Viktoria Obinger. Our tribe gathered in the dewy air, touring the herb gardens, foraging, and sampling on a delightful immersion into local naturalist philosophies.

The Power of Water

A mist was already in the air upon arrival at Liechtensteinklamm Gorge.

We convened for lunch at the on-site eatery, Gasthaus, where we went family-style, fueling up on traditional dishes, including impressive vegetarian .

I could feel the deep thunder of the forceful ravine as I approached, descending to the cavernous paths from the floating helix staircase.

One of the deepest gorges in the Alps at 1000 feet, its moderate-level footpaths initiated by Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein long ago created a game of hide-and-seek with the rumbling, mesmerizing beauty.

It was tempting to try to capture the magic with a camera, but I conceded. This force of nature is something you surrender to, like in meditation. It’s a phenomenon that speaks to something primal in us.

I eventually came upon a bench by a perch just before the reveal of the falls and welcomed the opportunity to surrender and just listen.

Hike to the Hochgründeck, the Healer

In the thick of it, the atmosphere is ethereal. A dance of shadows and light revealed endlessly enchanting scenes as I climbed into the clouds upon Hochgründeck.

I leveraged myself upon the roots of the soaring trees along vague trails. Footbridges above streams informed us we were headed the right way. Further up, ritualistic-looking wooden musical instruments lured me to play.

Is it much further? Don’t ask. Were there woodland creatures? There might have been.

The Chapel of Peace at Hochgrundeck

Several yards still from the peak destination six miles up, like a mirage for journeymen and women, was Heinrich-Kiener-Haus; a homey respite for food and refreshment.

It welcomed us beside a warm fire while serving up Austrian Polsterzipf family-style, relaxing further with a round of shtorm (an Austrian schnapps-like drink) before the last leg of our journey.

This climb up Hochgründeck, one of the highest and most wooded peaks in Europe, was once part of The Summit Games, a blend of ritual and mythology connecting a series of mountain peaks. Here on this peak: ‘The Healer.’

A book of visitors’ intimate thoughts sat by the entrance of the Chapel of Peace or St. Vincentz. I lit a candle and stood in the silence before strolling along the grassy summit.

I was awed by the hundreds of mountains peeking above the clouds. There was a compelling sense of tranquillity.

I had every intention of doing my daily meditation up here. But close my eyes to this magnificence? No way. On this day, the journey was my meditation .

Onward west, I was off on my quest into immersive wellness in the extensive spa facilities of the impeccable Alpin Resort Sacher, located in the enchanting storybook town of Seefeld, Austria, and recently named on the Leading Hotels of the World’s list.

A new favourite, indeed.

5 austrian wellness experiences most people haven’t heard about.

austria tourism wellness

Little Austria is a spa and wellness travel giant (the 5th largest market globally) even with its tiny population of 8.5 million. But Austria is so well established, and has been for so long, that people often overlook their historic – and current – innovation. This is the land of “wellness hotels” (resting, breathing fresh air, drinking pure water, exercising in Alpine nature, soaking in hot springs, etc.), where spas are as vast as theme parks – and their menus seem as long as novels.

With the Global Wellness Summit headed to Kitzbühel, Tyrol, Austria (the cradle of wellness tourism) this fall, the conference spotlighted five unique Austrian wellness experiences. Some are a century old, like the Mayr Cure or hay baths. But new and fascinating things are underway, like Sauna Aufguss shows, where sauna-meisters stage theatrical performances with costumes, song and dance in sauna “theaters” that hold 50 to 300 people. A far cry from how most Americans or Asians “do” sauna, which is often a lonely, small and uninspiring affair.

Wellness vacationers in Austria not only have to choose a season, but also opt for one of the diverse regions. For a wellness vacation, short breaks from many regions of Austria can be chosen, which are distributed throughout the country. The different federal states in which the spa hotels in Austria are located, have very different advantages. Altogether one differentiates between nine states:

Relax in the spa surrounded by picturesque mountain scenery in the Alpine republic

Many people come to mind when thinking of Austria: mountains. This means: High alpine landscapes, which guarantee extravagant views after climbing the peaks, a landscape painted as if in the meadows in the distance cows graze. In the distance you can see snowy peaks, where the snow never seems to thaw and sets itself apart from the summer landscape around you. Especially Tyrol in Austria is a popular destination for a spa vacation.

Wellness vacationers will find in Tyrol high mountains, which invite along small mountain rivers, vast meadows and idyllic meadows for walks and discovery tours. Both in summer and in winter, the diversity of nature in Austria offers plenty of natural attractions to discover. Here wellness tourists can still see golden eagles in the wild, trudge through pinewood forests or pause on idyllic river landscapes. In summer, excursions - from the wellness hotel - to the waterfalls of Tyrol or adventurous excursions through the gorges and gorges of the federal state are worthwhile. Relaxation, however, offers time off at the Tyrolean lakes in summer. After sunbathing, a dip in the water in drinking quality is good. What does a wellness stay in Austria look like?

Wellness as a holistic lifestyle always includes the four pillars of nutrition, exercise, relaxation and social contacts. The cover of these four pillars offers wellness holidays in a new region special opportunities. On the one hand, because in the wellness hotels in Austria there is time to pay attention to them all again.

On the other hand, because our everyday life from far away in another ambience and in another region appears again in a different light. Most spa vacationers in spa hotels in Austria cover the components of social contact during a short break by arriving with their loved one in the spa vacation. That's how the time together is guaranteed! Relaxation usually occurs on excursions through the Austrian countryside, in imposing views or during pleasant breaks on mountain rivers or lakes.

For biking tours or hikes wellness guests move once more. The routine everyday life in which they spend the main time of everyday life sitting, is counteracted by long trips through Austria. But also culinary wellness vacationers in Austria experience something new. Wellness tourists get a rich selection of regional dishes offered. Representative of Styria are, for example, the fresh salads prepared with pumpkin seed oil.

Tyrol on the other hand shines with the typical dumplings and donuts. In the wellness hotels of Austria, you can be sure that everything is handmade and is conducive to body and mind.

Wellness tourism: The (thermal) heat is on in Austria

When it comes to spas and wellness, Austrian spas may not often appear in many “best of” lists, but don’t let that fool you. In the Global Wellness Tourism Economy 2018 report , Austria ranked sixth in the Top 20 Wellness Tourism Destination Markets. Apparently, the country known for The Sound of Music is also a go-to place for a sound mind and body.

What makes Austria a premier destination for wellness? Thanks to the Alps, the country is blessed with an abundance of natural thermal springs (or as Austrians call them, therme ) that flow from former volcanic zones. Because of these springs, spas and wellness centers have sprung up to harness the health benefits that the warm waters offer.

[img src=”/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/iStock-1130969569.jpg” alt=”Wellness travel, Austria”]

The states of wellness

In each of the nine federal states of Austria, you can find spas blessed with natural hot springs, fresh Alpine air, and a gorgeous view of the mountains.

Vienna – It may well be the only capital city in the world with its own thermal spa. Therme Wien is the biggest city spa in Europe, with 6,000 square metres of health and fitness space that includes 26 pools heated by sulphur springs, 24 saunas and steam rooms, and around 2,500 lounge chairs. Vienna also has many day spas and luxury boutique spas. Then there’s City Wellness Medical , which offers cosmetic procedures alongside other wellness treatments.

Burgenland – One of the most popular thermal baths in this state is St. Martins Therme & Lodg e, located near Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel National Park. The spa has four-star offerings in its spacious complex, plus breathtaking scenery that greets you when you step outside. Other notable thermes are the family-friendly Loipersdorf Spa , featuring lots of sports facilities, and the Stegersbach Allegria Thermal Spa , with 14 pools featuring separate ones for babies, toddlers, and children.

Carinthia – With over 200 lakes and more than 60 curative spas, this state is a wellness holiday haven. Of note is the Thermen Resort Warmbad-Villach , a resort park with three hotels and several thermal spa facilities with healing waters supplied by six springs. Another outstanding therme is the Thermal Römerbad , named one of Europe’s most beautiful. Designed by celebrated architect Behnisch, the spa’s interiors and exteriors merge water and mountains — a stunning example of nature integrated into the construction.

Lower Austria – One of the highlights in this state is the Therme Laa , a wellness complex with a hotel, a health center, and even a silent spa, where the only thing you hear is the sound of gently lapping water. Pure bliss! Meanwhile, the health-giving sulphuric waters at the Römertherme health resort entice visitors to immerse themselves in its pools, just like the Romans did centuries ago. A session in its outdoor pool is sure to give you healthy, glowing skin.

Upper Austria – Warm, deep spring waters feed Upper Austria’s spas, providing luxurious relaxation as well as healing to spa-goers. The EurothermenResort Bad Schallerbach offers a South Sea flair to a wide variety of visitors — couples, whole families, friends, and more. Kids will especially enjoy the Pirate World Aquapulco attraction. At the EurothermenResort Bad Ischl , visitors can enjoy the popular therapies with salt and brine, while those who go to EurothermenResort Bad Hall can seek rehabilitation with iodine brine treatments.

Salzburgerland – Unlike the other regions with their sprawling thermal spas, this state focuses on smaller, leisurely boutique facilities. This may be the reason why a couple of their thermal spas are often mentioned in Austria’s “best of” lists. Alpentherme Gastein is touted as one of Europe’s most modern wellness resorts, its wood and stone structure blending with the tranquil views of the Alps. But you may prefer to stay outdoors and enjoy the alpine surroundings along their 120 kilometres of hiking trails. Another outstanding therme is Tauern Spa . Located in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, this wellness complex boasts of a four-star water world resort, with a variety of saunas and steam rooms, 11 swimming pools, and 15 treatment rooms.

Styria – Known as Austria’s “Green Heart,” Styria is home to one of the most distinctive structures in the country. Rogner Bad Blumau is a creation of world-renowned visual artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, whose offbeat aesthetics is on full display here. Buildings with round shapes, colourful facades, and curved lines blend in harmony with nature. Another notable spa is the Healing Thermal Baths Bad Waltersdorf . Its pools offer warm, mineral-rich waters that relax the mind and body, ease aches and pains, and boost the immune system.

Tirol – The region was known for the curative properties of its “Längenfelder Baths” back in the 16th century. Today, Tirol’s largest, most modern, and most distinctive thermal spa is the Aquadome , featuring three outdoor pools that resemble giant flying saucers floating weightlessly above the resort. Another relaxing getaway option is the Krumers Alpin Resort & Spa , a four-star resort that’s an oasis of calm. Run by the Albrecht family, this wellness and sports hotel is a perfect choice for a holiday filled with active and relaxing experiences.

Vorarlberg – This mountainous province is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of the New Alpine architecture, which combines tradition and modernity with clean lines and the use of glass and local wood. This aesthetic is on full display in their 21 wellness hotels and four spa hotels, all stylishly designed and located in the middle of nature. These wellness hotels offer natural health remedies to guests seeking a rejuvenating getaway.

Those that find themselves most at peace by the water should consider staying right on it, an experience Arctic Bath provides via floating cabins along the shore of northern Sweden’s Lule river. Guests are welcome to suites on land among the birch trees in addition to the six units on the Lule, which are built on a whimsical tilt. Architects Bertil Harström and Johan Kauppi designed them on a slant in an homage to “the old times,” when cabins along the Lule would freeze in the icy winter waters. A wood walkway leads visitors to the circular main building, which houses a bar and lounge area as well as a steam sauna, two dry saunas , a cold river bath, and two outdoor jacuzzis, which offer a dose of invigorating cold air free of charge.
