Chiba City and Makuhari Area

1. mihama ohashi.

Located in Mihama-ku in Chiba City, Mihama Ohashi (Mihama Bridge) is a popular dating spot where you can see the industrial complex of Ichihara City, the Aqua-Line Gate Bridge, and other spots when you look toward Tokyo Bay. This bridge is apparently called “pick-up bridge” by the locals, but the fact remains that the wonderful backdrop makes the sunset truly gorgeous at this spot.

If you come when the weather is fine, on a day when you experience the radiative cooling phenomenon early in the morning, then you just might get to see Mt. Fuji across Tokyo Bay.

2. Chiba Port Tower

Chiba Port Tower, the symbol of Chiba Port that is known as a sacred place for lovers, is a place where you would want to bring your loved one so you can gaze at the beautiful nightscape together. This spot is famous as one of the three major dating spots for residents of Chiba, together with the Nakanoshima Ohashi in Kisarazu City and the Keisei Rose Garden in Yachiyo City.

The “Tenku no Enmusubi (matchmaking spot in the sky),” which is more commonly called the “Promenade of Love,” on the 2nd floor of the tower is extremely popular with couples! They have even set up an Instagram-worthy photogenic spot “Tenshi no Hane (angel’s wings)” where there are speech balloon panels for one or two persons. Couples get very excited when taking photos with them!

3. Egawa Kaigan

Chiba’s Egawa Kaigan, also known as Japan’s Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni salt lake), is a natural coast where hundreds of meters of tidal flat stretch along the coast. It is a place where you can go into the offing during low tide to dig for clams. It is rather mysterious that there are a lot of telephone poles going far out into the sea, but those have only generated buzz for this spot among drone enthusiasts and Instagrammers.

There are also many factories in the area, including the Kimitsu Works of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, and you will get to catch their beautiful silhouettes at dusk, at night and during sunrise on those calm days when there is no wind. This is a spot that boasts gorgeous contrast between Egawa Kaigan and the factories, sky and telephone poles.

* The telephone poles in the picture above have been taken down.

Inubosaki, which juts out to the Pacific Ocean, is known as the spot of the earliest and first sunrise in Japan, so it is typically crowded on the first day of the year.

Now if you want to enjoy more of the nature that Inubosaki has to offer, then you should definitely check out the surrounding onsen (hot spring) resorts with your loved one and enjoy the view of Inubosaki Todai as it is illuminated by the setting sun, and the starry sky past 10:00 pm, after the lights at the lighthouse are turned off.

3. Naritasan Shinshoji

Naritasan Shinshoji is a temple that enshrines Fudomyo-o (one of the guardian deities of Buddhism). In particular, Aizen Myo-o (deity of love) in the Komyodo Hall is a controversial spot that is said to enhance the vitality of people. Naritasan is a vast place, so you will get to encounter a lot of deities.

The town that was originally built around this temple is also packed with attractions! Naritasan Omotesando is a town that is filled with the aromas of the Edo period. As you walk on the approach leading to the temple, try to spend some quality time by savoring the area’s famous unagi (eel) and soaking in the atmosphere of the temple town.

This 66-km sandy beach that is unobstructed by reef rocks beautifully connects the coast from Taitozaki to Gyobumisaki! It is so gorgeous that it is even mentioned in the in-flight announcements on planes. In the summer, this beach is crowded with visitors looking to go for a swim since it is near the Tokyo metropolitan area.

2. Namikiri Fudo-in

Namikiri Fudo-in is a temple that is just about a 5-minute walk from JR Naruto Station. After climbing the stairs and passing through the vermilion Nio-mon (Gate of Deva), you will be welcomed by the towering Hondo (Main Hall) that is painted bright red. On the way to the Hondo, you will see the halls for matchmaking and preventing dementia that are visited by plenty of worshippers every year. The Hondo looks as though it stands on top of a vertical cliff since there was apparently a sea right underneath it at the time it was built. The view from the Hondo is spectacular as it is overlooking the streets of Naruto.

3. Kujukuri Herb Garden

Kujukuri Herb Garden is a place for barbecue and camping where you can relax while being enveloped in pleasant scents emanating from the herbs. Covering an area of around 10,000 sq.m., this garden also has a dog park, so you can come with your pets in tow. There are only two places in Japan where you can see killer whales, and Kamogawa Sea World is one of those two.

About Chiba

It’s not hard to see that Chiba Prefecture (千葉県, Chiba-ken ) is more than just a bed town for its western neighbor Tokyo . In fact, many tourists might find it impossible to avoid the prefecture – Narita Airport is one of the three major international gateway hubs into Japan.

Its convenient proximity from Tokyo means that major theme parks such as Disneyland , Disney Sea , and Kamogawa SeaWorld aren’t too far away from the nation’s capital.

That being said, Chiba is also known for its natural beauty and history. If theme parks aren’t your thing, try visiting some of Japan’s best beaches in southern Chiba (easily accessible from Tokyo via the Aqualine toll road), Narita-san Shinsho-ji , or enjoy the spectacular views from Nokogiri-yama. Funassyi (Funabashi City’s popular mascot character) goods are popular souvenirs!

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

A place of spiritual energy.

best places to visit in chiba japan

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is one of the head temples of the Chisan branch of Shingon Buddhism and is dedicated to the deity Acala. The temple, which has been continuing its traditions without extinguishing the fire of rituals for over 1,000 years, is warmly regarded as a place of spiritual energy under the name ‘Narita no Ofudosan’.

The Bean Throwing Festival (Setsubun) held every year prays for national peace and a good harvest. It’s a major event, and celebrities such as sumo wrestlers and historical drama actors take part. In Japan, everyone tunes in. The vast precinct also has various beneficial cultural properties including the Great Main Hall (for all benefits), Shakado Hall (good luck and protection), and Komyodo Hall (success in love). Shinshoji Temple became very popular among the common people in the Edo period because the Ichikawa Family of Kabuki actors worshipped here. You can still feel that prosperity now. Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is a 10-minute walk from JR Narita Station or Keisei-Narita Station.

10 Best Things to Do in Chiba

Chiba Travel Guide: What to Do in Chiba Now

10 Best Things to Do in Chiba

Let me talk to you about Chiba Prefecture. It is a heavily underrated prefecture when it comes to tourism in Japan. Even if you may have heard of Chiba, not many can identify tourist places within it. And I’m here to change that for you.

Among international tourists, Chiba is mainly known for three things. First, for being the main entrance to Japan by having Narita International Airport. Second, for having Tokyo Disney Resort in it. And third, for having lots of places to get in touch with nature. The first two points are very well-known, but I would like to expand on the third point, which has much more to offer than many people imagine.

In this article, I will introduce to you our picks for the 10 best things to do in Chiba. From the internationally famous amusement park to lesser-known spots to get in touch with nature to souvenir shopping spots. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will be interested in spending a little more time in this really accessible place in the Kanto region.

With this Kanto Region Bucket List, let’s also check out the surrounding tourist attractions: Best Things to Do in Kanto

1. Immerse yourself in the land of dreams at Tokyo Disneyland

tokyo disneyland

The first needs no introduction. Tokyo Disneyland (東京ディズニーランド) is not only the most famous amusement park in Japan, but it is in fact, the third most visited amusement park in the world. First-time visitors might be surprised that “Tokyo” Disneyland isn’t actually located in Tokyo, but it is still easily accessible from central Tokyo.

Great atmosphere, delicious food, cute souvenirs, and most importantly, great unique rides. All you need to spend an unforgettable day with your loved ones can be found here.

For more information about Tokyo Disneyland, check out the following article.

2. Experience a more laid-back “Disney” at Tokyo DisneySea

tokyo disneysea

Tokyo DisneySea (東京ディズニーシー) is the second park built within Tokyo Disney Resort, located right next to Tokyo Disneyland. It is also really popular, being the fifth most visited amusement park in the world.

Tokyo DisneySea is a more laid-back version of Disneyland, offering things that appeal to more adult visitors. More options for refined food and alcoholic beverages, attractions based on real-life historic events, and a more romantic atmosphere. But that doesn’t mean younger visitors won’t enjoy it here. Many rides in DisneySea are more dynamic and thrilling for those who love rides.

3. See for yourself the amazing sea creatures at Kamogawa Sea World

Kamogawa Sea World

The orca show is definitely the most popular attraction, but you can also watch shows with beluga whales, dolphins, and sea lions. All of these are unique shows that you won’t be able to see at regular aquariums.

4. Enjoy the fresh air at the vast Country Farm Tokyo German Village

Tokyo German Village

The spacious park offers large fields of different types of flowers that will show different sceneries depending on the season you decide to visit. It is actually so large, you are allowed to go around the park by car. The illuminations at night are also very popular.

The park also offers shops, restaurants, rides, agricultural experiences, farm animals, and a large dog park.

5. Interact and learn about farming in a fun way at Mother Farm

Mother Farm

Talking about large parks that you can visit with family, Mother Farm (マザー牧場) is another place you should take into consideration. It is located in the mid-southern area of the Sobo peninsula, about one and a half hours away from central Tokyo if you go by car.

This farm was created by Hisakichi Maeda, a businessman who also was responsible for the starting of Tokyo Tower and the Sankei Newspaper. He created this farm to promote farming and named it “Mother Farm” because his mother was in the farming business.

You will find many rabbits, horses, sheep, and alpacas. There are many attractions and experiences that you can enjoy here with all your family. It is a good opportunity to get in touch with the farming culture of Japan.

6. Meet a unique Japanese scenery at Oyama Senmaida

Oyama Senmaida

One of the many spectacular sceneries you can enjoy at Chiba is the Oyama Senmaida (大山千枚田) . This is a Tanada (棚田) which is a type of rice field created in slopes, looking like steps. These Tanada can be seen in many places in Japan, but some of these are located in very scenic locations, this one being one of them.

Oyama Senmaida is located in the southern area of Chiba and is 4 ha wide. Since it is a rice field, depending on the season that you come, you will encounter a very different view. It is a popular spot for photography enthusiasts. Especially, the sunrise reflected in the rice fields is a scenery that you wont be able to see in many other places.

7. Feel the history and spiritual power at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple (成田山新勝寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Mt Narita, in Narita City. This is one of the most important temples of the Chisan sect of Shingon Buddhism (真言宗智山派). It was built over a 1,000 years ago and it is considered to be a spiritually charged place.

Not only is it popular due to its historical and spiritual significance, but also because it is easily accessed from central Tokyo. It is specially popular for Hatsumode (初詣) which refers to the first visit to a temple of the year.

8. Insert yourself into Edo period Japan at Sawara Town

sawara

If traditional Japanese town sceneries are something you’re interested in, then Sawara Town (佐原) is a place you won’t want to miss out on. This town is located in Katori city (香取市), in the northmost area of Chiba. It actually touches the borders with Ibaraki prefecture.

It is a town that flourished during the Edo period (17th to 19th century) and still has that scenery well-preserved. There are tours you can take on a boat where you can get to know about this fascinating town. Besides this, there are many interesting places nearby as well such as Katori Jingu Shrine (香取神宮) and the Inoh Tadataka museum (first person to draw a Japanese map after traveling across the country).

▶ Sawara tourism official website: http://www.suigo-sawara.ne.jp/abroad.html

9. See a heart made of light at Nomizo Falls

Nomizo Falls

The spot consists of a series of waterfalls passing through a cave. The scenery in itself is beautiful, but this gets even more photogenic if you go early in the morning when the sun rays pass through the cave and reflect on the river, creating a heart-shaped beam of light.

For more information about Nomizo Falls, check out the following article.

Nomizo Falls: The Secret Instagram-Worthy Waterfall

10. Getting souvenirs at Narita Airport

Narita Airport

And lastly, on our list, we have Narita airport. being the main entrance to Japan, this means it is also most likely to be the airport you use when going back home. If you’re having a hard time deciding on what to take back home for your family and friends, the easiest thing you can do is just look for souvenirs at Narita Airport.

You will find many souvenir shops selling souvenirs from different prefectures in Japan. You will even find original souvenirs that you won’t find elsewhere.

For more information about souvenirs to buy in Narita Airport, check out the following article.

What to Buy in Narita Airport

I hope this list of things to do in Chiba prefecture has sparked an interest in you for this wonderful place near central Tokyo. As you could see on this list, Chiba has so much to offer. Kujukurihama Beach

Long undisturbed sandy beaches are a rarity in Japan, making the pacific coast of North-East Chiba prefecture a popular destination. Kujukuri is the countries’ second longest beach at an estimated 60km and highly likely, the first glimpse you’ll get of Japan as your flight begins to descend.

The clear blue waters offer the perfect location for swimming and surfing. The area around the beach offers horseback riding, strawberry picking/eating, shrines and temples to view and cute cafes to relax in. If you are a fan of fresh fish, you may also enjoy sampling some of the beaches’ famed sardines from one of the many available restaurants.

‘SawTooth’ Mountain (Nokogiriyama)

Don’t let the name scare you away as Mt. Nokogiri is one of Chiba’s most famous mountains. In the West Coast of Chiba, standing 329 meters high, the Sawtooth mountain offers a unique experience with a temple complex hosting one of Japan’s largest buddhas carved into the side of the mountain.

It is not considered a difficult hike but the top can also be easily accessed using the scenic ropeway. The peak, known as Hell Peek Point , is a cliff poking directly out from the mountain and allows a clear view downward, offering a stunning look at Tokyo Bay, even stretching as far as Mt. Fuji , with clear skies. Here, you can also find a restaurant, souvenirs and many telescopes for closer viewing.

If you’re still not sold, remember, you’d still get a cool story out of it as you can always claim you climbed the sawtooth mountain to hell and back.

Chiba zoological park

The Chiba Zoological Park is popular amongst locals as it is famed for Futa, the standing Red Panda, who often can be found standing on his two hind legs, pretending to be people!

If that alone isn’t worth the ¥500 admission, perhaps the well organised 7 zones of furry familiars might entice you or perhaps the opportunity to get up, close and personal with some goats, sheep and horses in the petting zoo and horse riding facilities might do the trick.

The zoo is located in Chiba city and many advise taking the monorail to access the park as you could be lucky enough to be sat in a themed carriage complete with character voiced conductors.

Funabashi Andersen Park

This is a favorite spot for families as it offers something for everyone, year round splash pool facilities, a giant roller slide, climbing areas, mini-train rides, boats for rent, pedal cars, a petting zoo, pony rides and colourful gardens.

H.C Andersen is a beloved Danish writer most credited for his fairy tales (The little Mermaid, Thumbelina). Funabashi happens to be a sister city to Andersen’s home city, Odense, so the park maintains a Danish style throughout, leading to a fantastically unusual experience. The entrance fee is ¥900 with children under 3, free and ¥200 for children 4 and up.

As a quick side note, a slightly similar park is available elsewhere in Chiba prefecture. In Sodegaura City, Tokyo German Village can be found. This unique park also offers an illumination that you may not want to miss.

Kameiwa Cave

The Kameiwa cave (A.K.A turtle rock cave) can be found in the Shimizu Keiryu Hiroba park in Kimitsu city. Although originally a man made cave, it is surrounded by undeniable natural beauty.

The cave has gained popularity on instagram for the remarkable heart shape reflection the sun can create as it shines through, often compared to certain Studio Ghibli movie scenes. The heart shape, however, can only be seen at certain times, so it’s best to plan for an early morning in March or September.

Katsuura morning market

One of Japan’s top three markets, Katsuura is located on the eastern side of Chiba’s prefecture’s Boso Peninsula and this history soaked, fishing town’s market offers an array of fresh fish along with over 80 stalls selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, traditional pickles, Japanese sweets and prepared dishes. There are also some unique homemade crafts, perfect to complete your souvenir collection.

The Market is open from 6AM to 11AM everyday except Wednesdays and you may consider sticking around the area for a few hours, not only to enjoy the traditional ambience but also to sample some of Katsuura’s famous Ramen , Tatanmen, made with noodles, onions, minced meat and a dash of spice, created to keep the cold fishermen, warm.

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

The Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is a popular attraction with over 10 million visitors every year. It’s popularity is highly likely due to either its close proximity to Narita Airport, it’s undeniable beauty or it’s promise to grant prayers for business and romantic success. Either way, it’s an area that’s not to be missed during your time in the Chiba prefecture.

Along with the multiple architecturally delightful holy buildings, the street leading up to the temple also offers an abundance of interesting viewing. With hundreds of souvenir shops, cool cafes and some yummy street foods, try not to miss out on sampling unaju, a special eel dish in that area.

Lalaport Tokyo Bay

I’m personally drawn to the mall as it pays particular attention to accommodating it’s furry visitors and even offers a super pet park which includes a salon, dog cafe and dog run. How cute is that?

Chiba Port Tower

For one last glimpse of Chiba city and a view of Tokyo Bay, the Chiba Port Tower is the perfect place to end your visit. The building’s walls are made from one-way mirrors that reflect the scenery surrounding it and the fourth floor offers a dazzling, 113 meters up, view.

It’s a particularly good place to visit with a partner, not only because of the romantic night view but the second floor is known as a holy place for couples. Traditionally, couples pray to a stone in the “promenade of love” to receive good luck, before leaving a padlock with their names locked to the fence, to make a commitment to their love.

Slowing down on your way to the big city lights, hustle and bustle of Tokyo, might greatly impact your Japanese adventure especially considering narrowing this list down to just 10 things to do in Chiba prefecture was a struggle.
