The Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to November) are widely considered the best seasons to visit the Colosseum. During these months, the weather is pleasant - neither too hot nor too cold - allowing visitors to enjoy the experience comfortably. It's advisable to avoid the peak of summer crowds, extreme heat, and the Christmas holiday break.

Midweek days, particularly from Tuesday to Thursday , experience fewer visitors compared to weekends, making them ideal for a Colosseum visit.

On the first Sunday of each month, admission is free, which can lead to substantial crowds, so it may be wise to plan a visit outside of this time if one seeks a quieter experience.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

To avoid long lines and crowds, visit the Colosseum in the early morning, right after opening, or in the later afternoon, a couple of hours before closing. Tourists typically flock to this attraction between late morning to early afternoon, so planning a visit outside these hours can significantly enhance your time there. Check the Colosseum's opening hours before heading there!

Essentials for planning a Colosseum visit

When you're planning your visit to the Colosseum, having the right information can make all the difference. This section will guide you through the crucial details, from avoiding the overwhelming crowds to understanding the services available on-site.

Avoiding crowds at the Colosseum

Visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help you avoid the largest crowds, as midday tends to be the busiest time. Additionally, opting for timed-entrance Colosseum tickets can ensure a smoother entry. The first Sunday of each month provides free entry, which attracts more visitors, so avoid visiting during these days for a quieter experience.

Unlike most of Rome’s other major attractions, numbers of visitors inside the Colosseum are strictly limited – to 3,000 people within the amphitheater at any one time.

This used to lead to long lines outside even for ticket-holders, since the automated entry/exit system only allowed new people to enter the Colosseum as other people left. In an attempt to manage this situation, the authorities that run the monument imposed a new rule in 2019 which means that now every ticket purchased, having originally been valid for any two-day period within the calendar year in which it was purchased, has to be bought to enter the Colosseum at a specific, designated time and date. (Note: even with a skip-the-line ticket , you still need to join a small line for an airport-like security check but it is rarely more than five minutes’ wait.)

The flipside of these changes is lack of availability of official tickets (don’t worry, there are  lots available ), since these very specific date and time-slots get bought up by tourists and tour operators weeks or even months in advance. Furthermore the Colosseum ticket office only releases tickets every three months – meaning you cannot ever book your ticket more than three months in advance.

But al is not lost! We have an arrangement with tour partner Carpe Diem that offers tours of the Colosseum, Palatine, and Forum at 10 am – skip the hot weather and the crowds at the same time, and don’t worry about getting a ticket as they take care of that for you!

If you can’t make an early visit but are arriving when the weather is hot, we instead recommend getting a time-slot  towards the end of the day .

Back when it was the Flavian Amphitheater the Colosseum had a canvas roof. These days it’s open to the sky, and the heat of the day in Rome can become unbearable, so an early evening visit will be much more pleasant and cooler, with dramatic shadows as the sun sets, though you can still feel the heat radiating back at you from the stones. Note that the last entrance into the Colosseum is 1 hour before closing time.

Here are all the options to get your scheduled tickets:

  • Book your Colosseum ticket as soon as you know your dates of arrival to Rome (check back if they haven’t been released yet), and build your other sightseeing around this. You could try to to the official site , find the date you are in Rome and keep clicking the numbers on the page until you get to the end of the day and see a green ‘available’ button. However due to the changes this is increasingly difficult – see screenshot.
  • If you can’t find tickets there, buy from a reseller , which may hold pre-bought tickets more suitable to your visit.
  • Book a group guided tour of the Colosseum that will deal with the ticketing problems so you don’t have to.
  • Book a private guided tour that will deal with tickets for you too.

Remember that your Colosseum ticket also gets you into the Forum and Palatine and there are no such restrictions there. You can enter either the day before your time-slot or the day after, so in this case we absolutely recommend an early morning visit.

Colosseum special days, closures and need to know

Entrance to the Colosseum is free on the first Sunday of the month. On these days, tickets can only be acquired at the Colosseum ticket office, on a first come first served basis.

The Colosseum is also free on the 2nd June (Republic Day) and the 4th November.

The Colosseum is closed on the 25th December (Christmas day) and the 1st January (new years)

Need to know! Big events such as the Pope’s Via Crucis on Good Friday (the Friday before Easter) usually affects access to the Colosseum. This is not always announced with good notice but has affected ticket holders with last minute cancellations. Because of this, I recommend you do not book a ticket for the Colosseum on Good Friday (29th March 2024) , based on the experience of cancellations from the last couple of years.

The best tickets for visiting the Colosseum

NEED TO KNOW: The Colosseum ticketing system is changing! In April 2023/2024 a new ticketing system has been put in place. For ticketing for May 2024 onwards, the website to book direct is: https://ticketing.colosseo.it

There are several types of tickets you can choose from, all sold by the official Colosseum ticket concession. The concession is the ONLY ticket provider: any other platform / tour operator is a reseller of those tickets.

The table below is a quick overview, but you can also find my full guide to the best tickets for the Colosseum here .

Tips for visiting the Colosseum, tip 1: book online

The Colosseum has a good online booking system that allows to buy timed entrance tickets. The system operates with time slots which means YOU SKIP THE LINE by booking online.

You do not need to use a tour operator or third party to avail of the option: once you have your tickets, you go to the entrance and the only line is for checks and security – please note that this cannot be skipped.

You can also buy ticket on the day at the ticket kiosk in person. Please be aware that lines can be very long and tickets do run out: once they are gone, the ticket office closes for the day.

Colosseum tip 2: understand its booking system

Colosseum tickets are released 30 days ahead of your desired date and go fast, even instantaneously.

They are so sought after that big companies use bots to secure them as soon as they come out, leaving the normal buyer empty handed.

To try and secure them, it is useful to understand how the system works.

I have written here >>> full guide to get Colosseum tickets but, at a glance, this is what you need to know:

  • There is only one company issuing Colosseum tickets and this company in 2023 is called Coopculture. From May 2024 the Colosseum tickets will be available on the colosseum website direct. Everyone else is a reseller. tickets come out 30 days ahead.
  • Tours operator follow a slightly different booking system and are often able to guarantee tickets ahead of the 30 days window: if opting for this solution, ask them to confirm they have the ticket in hand.
  • Be patient and keep checking the site, if you decide to go on your own. Tickets come out for sale 30 days before and then again in batches during the 30 day window until the day of your visit. It is worth checking regularly as new batches of tickets do come out.

You can find here >>> my full guide to buying Colosseum tickets from the official seller directly

  • To maximise the change of getting tickets, I highly recommend you book your tickets as soon as possible, especially if going to Rome from April to the end of October , the busiest months for tourism in Rome.

Colosseum tip 3: decide what you want to see

The Colosseum is organized in several parts and which one/ ones to see depends on your interest, party and time available.

Not all tickets allow access to all areas: choosing in advance what is and is not interesting for you will allow you to make an informed choice.

The things to see in the Colosseum are:

General access : this is the most basic ticket, and it allows entrance to the Colosseum and its exhibition. With these tickets you can see the Colosseum inside but cannot step onto the area nor access the underground area.

The arena floor : this is the main area, the stage of the theater.

Here you can stand where the gladiators used to stand, see the original seats and get a glance of the underground area, excavated just below the arena.

Good to know : tickets to the Colosseum’s area are hard to come by. The best option it to secure them via a good operator such as LivTours. Find their offer >>> here <<< .

Underground of the Colosseum at night

The underground part of the Colosseum is where props and animals were kept, as well as the area where gladiators used to wait for their turn.

This is the most interesting area if you want to learn about the inner workings of the Colosseum and the best way to is it the colosseum for this is via a tour.

The tour in this area is the one that taught us the most: you can read all the fun and interesting facts we learned here.

The top tier is the most scenic of all the areas of the Amphitheater.

This is a wonderful area if you want to also catch views above the Roman Forum and has recently become more accessible thanks to a panoramic lift to the Colosseum ‘attic’.

The view from upper tier is breathtaking, one of the best views int Rome .

I highly recommend you book a tour of this belvedere area if you can. You can see my photos and read my impressions of this tour here .

Colosseum tip 4: make sure you have ID on you

Tickets to some areas of the Colosseum such as the underground requite to show ID at the Colosseum entrance.

Make sure you read the small print on the ticket you got and, if required, have official ID on you on the day.

Official ID means passport or National Identity Card (if from the EU). Copies may or may not be accepted, depending on who you find at the door and may leave you open to discretional decision.

Colosseum Tips 5: don’t stress about best time of visit

I see lots of Colosseum tips about the best time to visit the Colosseum; however, I believe these tips often cause fear, rather than offer much help.

You can visit the Colosseum all year round and pretty much any time of the day. The difference in experience if you go morning or afternoon will be minimal.

That said, some times come with advantages:

The best time of day to visit the Colosseum for a chance of smaller crowds is the early morning. This is down to the simple truth that many people will still be asleep then, and the city will be quieter than at more convenient times.

The best time to visit the Colosseum in summer is the evening, when specialized night tours allow you to see the monument all lit up: a wonderful experience!

The best time for visiting the Colosseum in the coldest months ( January , February ) is lunchtime.

View over Roman Forum at night from Campidoglio

Colosseum tip 6: wear sensible shoes

The Colosseum is very well kept and very well equipped for tourism however, it is an archaeological site and has several areas with less than smooth walking surfaces and many steps.

The best shoes for visiting the Colosseum are good quality, well broken-in walking shoes: sneakers, runners or walking sandals with rubber sole are all ideal.

Flip flops and sandals with a slippery sole are to be avoided for safety reasons.

You can find my t ips for picking the best shoes for Rome and my favorite styles here.

Colosseum tip 7: leave large bags at home

The Colosseum has several safety rules and one of them is that large backpacks or bags are not allowed in.

While ‘large’ is a pretty generic word, open to interpretation, what this usually means is that normal size purses and handbags are ok but travel backpacks or travel luggage is not.

Colosseum tip 8: prepare for the weather

For the most part of your visit to the Colosseum, you will find yourself outdoors so, dressing for the weather is paramount.

In summer, make sure you have light clothing, sunscreen and a sun hat – the heat can get brutal here!

In winter, make sure you wrap up with a coat and scarf, especially if visiting the underground part of the amphitheater and if going to the Forum afterward.

They get unbelievably cold!

Find my tips for packing for Rome here

Colosseum tip 9: don’t arrive too early (but definitely not late!)

Skip the line tickets and reserved entrance tickets allow you to get in without long queues however, all visitors to the Colosseum must pass a security screening.

The allow you to join the line for checks 10 minutes before your entry time.

Colosseum Tip 10: stay nearby

Many hotels are in close proximity to the Colosseum, ranging from five-star luxury marvels to budget-friendly options.

They are an excellent option especially if you are short on time and you have the Colosseum on your Rome bucket list: some have gorgeous terraces with views that will allow you to enjoy the amphitheater not just during your visit but also while having breakfast or at aperitivo hour!

You can find our guide to the best hotels near the Colosseum here.

What is the best time to visit Colosseum ?

The  best time  to go to the Colosseum is during the  low season  from November to February. However, Christmas and New Year holidays are usually busy.

As for the  best time of day  to visit the Colosseum Rome, try to get there for  8:30am  when the doors have just opened. At this time, the crowds aren’t as large as they are in the late morning hours through to the afternoon.

You could also visit 1-2 hours before the Colosseum closes. This is also the best time of day to visit the Colosseum Rome as the  crowds  are  considerably smaller  and, if you fancy a romantic visit, the golden glow of the setting sun will light up the Colosseum at this time.

The high season runs from March to October and may not be the best time to visit Colosseum .  At this time of year you should expect to wait up to 2 hours in line to access the Colosseum.

Colosseum Rome peak times

Avoid in the morning. It is best to visit the Colosseum in the afternoon and even at the end of the day.

Indeed, many tourist buses arrive in the morning around 10am (including many buses from cruise ships from the port of Civitavecchia) at the Colosseum and will be on site in the morning.

They generally leave from 3 p.m. This is the time that I recommend to you for your visit

How Do You Reach the Colosseum by Public Transportation?

The Colosseum takes a very central location in the city of Rome. It is very close to the Roman Forum (which you can access by bus lines 51, 85, 87, and 118) and Piazza Venezia.

Here is how you can reach the Colosseum by public transportation :

  • Bus: lines 51, 75, 85, 87, and 118, bus station “Colosseo”
  • Tram: lines 3 and 8, tram station “Piazza del Colosseo”
  • Metro: line “A” “Manzoni” metro station, line “B” “Colosseum” metro station

On Sundays motor traffic is prohibited , so you can rent a bicycle near the metro station or walk around the Colosseum square and Via dei Fori Imperiali.

There are taxi parking spots by “Colosseum” metro station and on the W side of the square by the tram stop “Piazza del Colosseo”.

Enjoy the Special Events Happening at the Colosseum

For those who would like to visit the underground of the Colosseum or enjoy the fascinating view of the entire Colosseum valley from the top, there is another great event.

You can purchase one of the available visit paths to the Colosseum Underground ( book here ) and Colosseum Belvedere ( ticket available here ). Each visit path is available for purchase every day between 8:40 and 16:50 and will take about 75 minutes to complete.

The full-priced adult admission is 18 euros , while reduced admission price is 13,5 euros .  Book your S.U.P.E.R ticket online here .

How to save time when buying Colosseum Tickets ?

When you purchase the ticket to the Colosseum, you automatically receive admission to the Roman Forum, even though it is a separate site. You can now choose between an “open” ticked and a timed-entry ticket. We highly recommend to book your defined entry time online to make sure you wont wait in line.

With an “open” ticket, you can visit the Colosseum any day after 14:00, which does not affect the Roman Forum hours . With a timed-entry ticket, you will have to show up at a designated time and cut the wait by using the fast-track line .

Besides, you can use the services of a tour guide and buy Colosseum skip-the-line tickets and avoid waiting in the lines at the entrance. Trust me, it is totally worth it !

The full-priced adult admission to the Colosseum costs 12 euros. EU citizens ages 18-25 and EU state school teachers receive a reduced admission price of 7,5 euros. Both EU and non-EU citizens under the age of 18, along with Italian permanent teachers, receive free full admission to the Colosseum.

Moreover, the admission is free for every visitor on the first Sunday of the month . Because of that, it is not possible to book the entrance ticket on the first Sunday of each month.

There are 5 ways for you to purchase entrance tickets to the Colosseum and Roman Forum:

Where is the Colosseum located?

The address of the Colosseum is Piazza del Colosseo, 1, in Rome, Italy . For those travelling by car, the Colosseum’s GPS coordinates are 41.8902° N, 12.4922° E . If you’re in Rome and want to find out how to go to the Colosseum use the following Google Map to find the best route from your current location.

How to get to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is very well serviced by Rome’s extensive public transport network. It can be reached by subway, multiple bus lines, and by tram. Below is a list of all public transport options to go to the Colosseum from practically anywhere in Rome.

  • Metro B line, get off at the Colosseum metro stop.
  • Metro A line, get off at Manzoni stop, then switch to the number 3 tram line going south.
  • Bus lines 60, 75, 85, 87, 271, 571, 175, 186, 810, 850, C3, and 117.
  • Tramway line 3.

If you don’t want to take public transport you can also take a taxi, just make sure that it is an official, licensed cab.

You’ll recognize them because they have the “TAXI” sign on the roof of the vehicle, are all white, and they have the Commune di Roma logo on the side.

Also make sure your cab has a meter, and that the driver turns it on when you get in, otherwise you could end up paying much more than you should.

Things to see near the Colosseum

The Colosseum is surrounded by other beautiful and famous monuments that are well worth viewing . The most important ones are:

  • The Arch of Constantine, a triumphalist arch dedicated to the Emperor of the same name. It sits right next to the Colosseum and doesn’t require a ticket.
  • The Domus Aurea , the remains of the grand palace emperor Nero built himself in 68 AD. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour (affiliate link if this is available?)
  • The Roman Circus, aka the Circus Maximus , the ground-level remains of an ancient chariot racing stadium. It is said that it could seat 150,000 spectators during the Empire’s heyday. It is best viewed from the Palatine Hill.
  • The Palatine Hill, which houses the archeological remains of many ancient Roman palaces and temples and offers a great view of the surrounding area. You can visit it with the same ticket as the Colosseum.
  • The Roman Forum, or Foro Romano , which used to be the center of Rome itself. A plaza where trade, politics, parades, and entertainment were conducted. You can visit and view its many archaeological remains with the same ticket as the Colosseum.

Tips and things you should know for your visit

Below are some tips and other important information you should take into account when visiting the Colosseum.

Like all major tourist attractions, the Colosseum’s security is quite stringent to keep visitors safe. Visitors are not allowed to enter the monument with large bags, suitcases, or backpacks.

If you are carrying your travel luggage you will be denied entry. Small and medium-sized bags are ok, but they will be screened by security personnel and go through a metal detector.

Italian military police, the Carabinieri, patrolling on horseback near the Colosseum

Skipping the line

If you have pre-booked your tickets you will get to skip the ticket line , but will still have to wait to go through security. Depending on the day and the time of year security can take anywhere from 10 minutes to over 60 minutes. Because of this, it is recommended you budget extra time for your visit.

A good way to avoid this problem altogether is to go early in the morning. The Colosseum opens to visitors at 8.30 am. If you arrive early you will spend much less time waiting and you will also avoid the intense heat of the Roman summer. Another way to skip the lines is to join a guided tour, find out more on our tours of the Colosseum page (link).

Is the Colosseum accessible for disabled people?

Yes, the Colosseum is accessible to disabled people. Its main entrance has no stairs, the inside is mostly flat save a few areas because of the old cobblestones, and there is an elevator that takes visitors to the upper floor.

Parking near the Colosseum

Regarding parking near the Colosseum — the most important advice for any visitor thinking of driving in Rome is don’t do it . Driving and finding parking spaces in the center of the city is very difficult if you don’t know your way around.

You’ll save money, time, and stress if you stick to public transport. Pickpockets can be a thing, but if you’re careful and mindful of your belongings you won’t have a problem.

Does the Colosseum have a dress code?

The Colosseum doesn’t have a dress code, but in exploring it you’ll be climbing a lot of stairs so make sure to wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes. The same can be said of Rome as a whole. Shorts, leggings, hoodies… all are fine.

If you explore the surrounding area you may also spend some time in the sun, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen.

Is the Colosseum child friendly?

Yes, but you’ll need to do a little extra planning. If you’re visiting during the hottest months of the year go early in the morning to escape the heat. Joining a guided tour can also help with dodging the lines to minimize waiting time. Beyond that, it depends on your child. If he/she is interested in ancient archaeological ruins and in hearing stories about brave Roman gladiators that fought in the arena the Colosseum can be quite an enjoyable experience.

What is the best way to see the Colosseum?

The best time to visit the Colosseum is early in the morning before large crowds form, and the best days are during the week, as it will usually be less crowded than on the weekends. However, if you’re willing to spend a little more, a night time tour (link) is probably the most interesting way to visit. Keep in mind that the night tour does not include a combined ticket for the Roman Forum and the palatine hill as a normal Colosseum ticket would, so if you want to see those monuments too you’ll have to visit them separately.

A brand new ticket system has been launched for tickets to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Domus Aurea - check it out here .

A few things to note with this new system:

1. It only applies for tickets from May 1 2024 onwards . If you want to purchase tickets for April 2024, you will need to use the old CoopCulture website.

2. Tickets are currently being released a month out, day by day . On April 8 tickets for May 8 became available, on April 9 tickets for May 9 get released and so on.

3. The new website has a system which puts visitors in a digital queue before letting them on to the site itself, to stop the site crashing due to demand, so don't worry if you don't get onto the site immediately.

4. Not all ticket/tour options are available to purchase yet  so keep checking back if what you want isn't available.

The Colosseum and Roman Forum / Palatine Hill are open on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday , and on August 15 ( Ferragosto .)

Best time of year to visit the Colosseum?

The Rome Colosseum is one of the city's  top attractions , and one of the most visited monuments in the world (over 7 million in 2019!)

So it always has visitors.

However, unlike the Vatican , the crowds do vary according to how many tourists are in Rome.

If you are here between March – October , when it's a  mix of high and mid seasons , the Colosseum will pretty much always be crowded, whatever time of day/day of the week you visit.

If you come in low season  ( November ,  December ,  January ,  February ), when there are fewer tourists, you may find it somewhat less crowded.

Especially on non-holiday weekdays .

NB - In recent years, I am finding crowds and queues at the Rome Italy Colosseum even in low season on weekends , especially when the weather is good.

Best day of the week to visit the Colosseum?

The Colosseum is open 7 days a week.

And new for 2024 the Colosseum is open  December 25 and January 1 .

So is there a day of the week that is best for visiting the Colosseum ?

In high season , the Rome Italy Colosseum is crowded every day of the week.

You can barely discern a difference between the crowds during the week vs. the weekend.

But in low season , you might find the Colosseum less crowded during the week than on the weekend.

(However, as of a huge return to Italy tourism in 2022, the Colosseum seems to be crowded pretty much every single day, year-round.)

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

On the weekends, Romans go out and enjoy their city, as well as people who live nearby and want a day out.

Then there are Italians and other European residents who can easily drive or fly into Rome on the weekend .

So you can always count on crowds at the Colosseum on weekends, even in low season.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • If you are here for Easter Weekend , the Colosseum closes early on the Friday, due to the Via Crucis . On that weekend, it's open and will be packed.
  • If you are here over New Years' , the Colosseum may close early on New Years' Eve and  New Years' Day (check on their website to be sure of opening times these dates.)

Best time of day to visit the Colosseum?

Just about any time of year, high season or not, I always suggest visiting the Colosseum either  when they first open at 9 AM , or,  1-2 hours before last entry .

In high season, you will still see plenty of people at these hours but not nearly as many as during late morning and through the middle of the day.

Think of the crowd levels as a bell curve .

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

In  hot months , I highly recommend against visiting during the middle of the day, as  there is virtually no shade and no place to sit down .

Early Closing Hours in Winter

Don't forget  that the Rome Italy Colosseum closes at “sundown” so in the  winter months , you’ll need to come earlier in the day.

To sum up, the best times to visit the Colosseum to avoid the crowds , and also for your own comfort, are:

  • In low season months , from November through February (except for the Christmas and New Year holidays).
  • Mid-week if you can.
  • At 9AM when it first opens . In high season, you will still find crowds at this hour, but much smaller crowds than later in the day.
  • One hour before last entry . Last entry is one hour before it actually closes, so if you go about an hour before that, you will have plenty of time to enjoy it and not feel rushed. The caveat here is that if you have a standard ticket, you have only one day to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill area, so you would need to visit the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill before the Colosseum.

How much does it cost to visit the Colosseum?

There are two main ticket types for the Rome Italy Colosseum, a standard entry ticket and a Full Experience ticket.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

The standard ticket price for the Colosseum is

  • 16€ for an adult
  • 2€ for Europeans between the ages of 18-25. At the moment, this discounted rate is available only to European citizens .
  • Free for everyone under 18

There is also a 2€ booking fee for booking in advance.

You can avoid the booking fee if you purchase your tickets in person on site, but I don't recommend this as the lines can be really long.

Reminder: All Colosseum tickets will be nominative.

This means that your ticket will have your name on it, and you’ll have to show ID to prove you are the person whose name is on the ticket.

Any valid photo ID will do, including your driver’s license (also a photo of your ID or passport on your phone is acceptable).

The Full Experience ticket price for the Colosseum is

  • 22€ for an adult

There is an additional 2€ booking fee.

This ticket allows you to visit the Colosseum Underground , The Attic or the Colosseum Arena Floor , as well as access to all the S.U.P.E.R. sites (some of which may or may not be open during your visit), which are special areas that are now easily accessible with this ticket.

Take a look at my page all about the Colosseum Full Experience for more details!

Both the standard and Full Experience Colosseum tickets also include a one-time entrance to the  Roman Forum and the  Palatine Hill area, which are classed as one site for the entrance ticket.

How to Get Free Entry to the Colosseum

While the Free Sunday at the Colosseum has been reinstated, this is only one day a month.

The Colosseum is free all the time:

  • For everyone under 18 years of age
  • For holders of a Roma Pass or other Rome city pass that allows entry to the Colosseum, and you choose this as one of your free sites
  • For anyone with a disability and their care-giver/companion (with valid medical documentation of the disability)

Get all the details you need about free entry to the Colosseum here .

The Colosseum has opened a dedicated set of rooms for families, called the 'Baby Pit Stop' which you should take full advantage of if needed.

This is for families with young children to take a break if the crowds and size of the arena get too much, as well as providing baby changing facilities and a quiet place to breastfeed. Find it on the second floor.

The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome

Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.

In my 3-day itinerary, you'll see all the major must-see Rome attractions like the Vatican , Colosseum , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona , Spanish Steps , Castel Sant'Angelo , and much more.

And if you have more time, or want suggestions for extra/other things to do, you'll find that there too.

Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers .

How  long will it take to visit the Colosseum ?

I find that a typical visit to the inside of the Colosseum, including walking around the two tiers you can visit with a standard ticket, takes around an hour .

Of course you could spend less time if you want.

But an hour is about right if you visit it as most people do, walking all the way around one tier, and then all the way around the other tier, with stopping to take pictures.

There is often a special exhibit on the second-level tier, so if you explore that, add anywhere from 10-30 minutes to your visit.

Finally, there is a gift shop , so you might spend time there as well.

Do you really need to visit the Vatican and Colosseum on the same day?

Find out how here!

How long will it take to visit the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill?

Typically, you will spend about an hour at each site, so a full visit to the Colosseum, Roman Forum , and Palatine Hill will take about 3 hours on average.

You can break this up, and visit over a full day, with a lunch break in between .

Most tours given by tour agencies of the Colosseum include the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, and last around 3-4 hours.

What can you bring inside the Colosseum? What can't you bring?

I am often asked if you can bring a "small backpack" inside the Colosseum.

Yes you can.

This, of course, depends on what you mean by "small." Basically, you can bring a typical schoolbook-type backpack inside the Colosseum.

You may also take in a clear plastic bottle of water .

Here are the things you may not bring with you inside the Rome Italy Colosseum:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Large backpacks (such as for camping) or bulky bags
  • Tripods
  • Selfie-sticks
  • Dark bottles and glasses containers

No matter what season you visit Rome, here are 4 things never to leave at home:

Is it worth taking a tour of the Colosseum?

I am a big fan of tours, especially to a place like Rome that is so full of history.

Without a tour, you would need a really good guidebook, or audio tour, otherwise, you will just be looking at a bunch of ruins without any context or understanding of where they came from and why they are there.

If you are not a tour person, you could take the audio guide at each location.

Each site has its own audio guide, so there is a Colosseum guide, a Roman Forum guide and a Palatine Hill guide.

Tours of the COlosseum with parco colosseo

When you book a ticket to the Colosseum directly with the Parco Colosseo , one of the options is to book a guided tour.

This is a tour given by the guides employed by the Colosseum.

The cost is minimal (usually about 5-10 € more than a standard ticket).

So it can be worthwhile to take this tour.

You will certainly get some history and a good introduction for your visit to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill area, where you will not have a guide.

In the new ticketing system introduced in April 2024 , the guided tours are not available for every ticket option so you'll need to double check if your preferred entry has an available tour.

TOURS OF THE COLOSSEUM through a Tour Agency

Many tour companies offer a variety of tours to the Colosseum.

They typically cost quite a bit more than the tours given directly by Parco Colosseo.

Here's why:

  • Tour companies are businesses and they need to make a profit. Parco Colosseo is a government-funded agency so it's less focused on profits.
  • Tour companies employ licensed guides, who need to make a living from their work. The guides who work for Parco Colosseo may have other duties, and are on salary, not paid per tour.
  • Tour companies offer a more complete package. When you take a tour of the Colosseum with Parco Colosseo, you will get a basic tour of the Colosseum. Most tour companies include the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill at the very least, if not other special things to see along the way.

Special visits to the Rome Colosseum

Most of the year,  you can visit the Colosseum at night .

Rome coliseum at night

A night visit to the Colosseum is a very special thing to do and I cannot recommend it highly enough - you can book your tour here .

View of the Colosseum arena floor

Walking out onto the reconstructed arena floor of the Colosseum is a really special feeling. It gives you a different perspective compared to just walking around the outer area!

You can get access to the arena floor with the Full Experience ticket, by visiting the Colosseum at night or by booking a tour that includes this access in the itinerary - find out all you need to know on my dedicated page here .

How To visit the underground of the Rome Italy Colosseum

The first time I visited the  Rome Colosseum , I thought, where is the floor?

It turns out that since it was made of wood, it’s long gone, and now, the underneath is exposed.

What went on under there?

rome colosseum inside

By visiting the Colosseum underground , you will find out.

I highly recommend this visit.

Can you visit the Upper Tiers of the Rome Italy Colosseum?

In 2024, visits to the upper 3rd, 4th, and 5th levels of the Colosseum are open again.

Yes you can visit the upper tiers!

This is a new Full Experience ticket, where you can visit the Colosseum 'Attic' with a newly installed elevator.

From there you can climb to the third, fourth and fifth tiers of the Colosseum and enjoy some stunning views!

visiting the colosseum in a wheelchair

Yes, the Rome Italy  Colosseum is wheelchair accessible , mostly.

The ground floor of the Colosseum is accessible to wheelchair users.

From there, you can take a lift/elevator to the second tier.

You can also get around both the ground floor and second floor tiers in a wheelchair.

Visits to the underground and upper tiers are not wheelchair accessible.

You may bring your own wheelchair, or request one upon arrival.

They only have one wheelchair available on each floor, so don't count on one being available.

If you need your own, you should bring it, or rent one in Rome.

Visitors who are disabled (with written medical proof, if not in a wheelchair), and their companion/caregiver, may enter the Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine Hill for free .

There are accessible toilets .

The Colosseum is visited by millions of visitors every year. It is very likely that you will find long lines to enter and inside the Amphitheater.

In any case, the best time to visit the Colosseum is early in the morning or around 13:00 on weekdays.

We do not recommend visiting on weekends and holidays when many people are not working.

It takes at least 1 hour and 30 minutes to visit the Colosseum, while approximately 3 hours are needed for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The duration varies depending on how deeply you want to explore the history of the monuments.

When to visit the Colosseum?

The best time of year to visit the Colosseum is winter (excluding December) when there are fewer tourists in Rome. The opening hours are shorter compared to other seasons, but they allow for a more relaxed visit with fewer crowds. If you choose the early afternoon, be aware that in winter the Colosseum closes at 4:30 PM. The best days to visit the Colosseum are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday because most tourists visit Rome on the weekend, and some extend their visit by one day, taking advantage of Monday and Friday.

How long does a visit to the Colosseum last?

Visiting the Colosseum in Rome? Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your visit!

The Colosseum is one of the most iconic structures in all of Europe. It’s also one of the largest amphitheaters ever built, and it was used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles like animal hunts, executions, and re-enactments of famous battles.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

Today it remains a major tourist attraction with thousands visiting every day. If you’re planning on going yourself, here are some tips for visiting the Colosseum so that your trip goes smoothly.

The Colosseum is one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, and it’s no wonder why. It was built in 70 – 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian as an arena for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology.

The Flavian Amphitheater as it was called, completed its construction in 79 AD. It was a gift to the Roman People. For nearly 500 years it was used for public entertainment and had a crowd capacity of 50 000 people.

Upper levels of the Colosseum

With so much history, it is a must add to your Rome itinerary .

Where is the Colosseum located in Rome?

You can visit the Colosseum grounds for free. To enter the Colosseum – after the security gates – you have to pay an entry fee. This fee is valid for entry at Palatine Hill and Roman Hill. On the first Sunday of every month, you can enjoy a free entry to the site!

To access the standard areas of the Colosseum (after security), it is a minimum of 16 euros per person. You can book priority tickets, access with a guide, and VIP access to special areas like the underground tour and the arena, which are additional costs.  Tours range from $35 to $150 USD depending on the access level.

Yes, you can. There is also access to the second floor (using stairs) with a standard ticket. 3rd to 5th is also open to the public on certain days.

Best Time to Visit the Colosseum in Rome

The Colosseum is one of the most famous landmarks in all of Italy, so it’s no surprise that it is on every Rome bucket list. Here are some tips to beat the crowds,

Timing: Always check the seasonal hours (opening and closing) for the day of your visit. If you have an open entry ticket (without a guide) plan to arrive in the morning or in the evening, just before closing.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

Colosseum opening hours:

  • Typically, the Colosseum opens daily at 09:00 am and closes 1 hour before sunset.
  • Opening hours are late during the winter months – opening at 10:30 am, with last entry at 06:15 pm.
  • The Roman Forum is open daily from 10:30 AM to 7:15 PM throughout the year.
  • Palatine Hill is open daily from 10:30 AM to 7:15 PM throughout the year.

Best day or month to visit the Colosseum: As mentioned above, we recommend visiting the Colosseum grounds in the morning or late at night when there aren’t as many people around.

  • Weekdays are a tad better than exploring on the weekends
  • Off-season months from November through February are much better as the temperatures are pleasant, and the sites are less crowded due to the holidays.
  • Summer months are very busy (and can get very hot during the day). If you must travel in the summer, make sure to avoid visiting between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm when the heat is at its worst.
  • On the first Sunday of each month, the entrance to the Colosseum is free. However, Free Sundays are suspended for 2021. Note that free entry also means super long queues!
  • The Colosseum is closed on 1 January and 25 December.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

Whenever you decide to visit, we recommend purchasing a Colosseum tour or Colosseum tickets to avoid long lines and have a better experience.

  • Do reserve Colosseum tickets in advance
  • Also, note to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your timed ticket or guided tour

When exploring on your own, most people spend 1-2 tours inside the complex. As part of the tour, you will be with the guide for the set duration (1 – 4 hours), and then you have time to explore on your own, take photos, etc.

What to wear when visiting the Colosseum + Packing tips

There is no dress code for visiting the Colosseum, like churches. But the Colosseum site is HUGE, and it has a varied surface. There are stairs, and uneven areas, so you need to be prepared for your visit.

First off, when you book a tour, it will include the following information (to carry with you)

  • Photo identification: Like your passport or ID card, copy accepted
  • Copy of your tour booking
  • Arrival time or meeting time and place. You are asked to arrive 15 to 20 minutes away

Due to uneven surfaces, you must wear comfortable walking shoes. Each tour and exploration will take at least an hour+, so ensure you are comfy in your shoes.

During hot summer months, ensure you are wearing light clothing. We recommend wearing sunscreen and sunglasses at all times of the year!

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

On the day of your visit, don’t forget to carry

  • Water bottle
  • Camera (no drones. Colosseum is located on a no-drone zone)

You must avoid carrying the following items,

  • Large bags or luggage are not allowed to be carried inside the Colossuem
  • No selfie sticks or tripods
  • Almost all tours do not allow wheelchairs and strollers

Keep in mind, there is airport-style security inside the Colosseum. You go through security checks, and hence don’t carry prohibited items like weapons, etc.

Adhere to your time slot for all tickets. This is important because at one given time the Colosseum can only accommodate up to 3000 visitors.

Photography Tips for the Colosseum

Colosseum makes for one of the best photo spots in Rome . It is stunning, iconic, and actually quite easy to take pictures without a lot of crowds, and for free!

View of the Colosseum from the park nearby

You can see the Colosseum peeking out from a park nearby . This is a great spot to capture the Colosseum in wide-angle (with skies and trees framing your image).

For best photos, arrive in the morning . We were at the Colosseum grounds just before 7:00 am and caught the beautiful sunrise. There were very few people at the site, except for a few people who were strolling.

The gates don’t open until 09:00 am, so you can get great shots, minus crowds. Some of our friends have mentioned that they used a selfie stick and tripod to get photos (outside) in the early hours, without any issue.

In the early hours too there are police vehicles patrolling the area.

So yes, take photos in the morning, and then book tickets to enter the complex after 09:00 am. Need breakfast? Head to the Colosseum Metro (line B), you will find coffee and baked items!

Girl at the Colosseum in the morning

Golden hour is definitely the best time to take photos at the Colosseum. During the day, the sunlight is too harsh for portraits . Plus the inside of the Colosseum will be busy with visitors.

Remember drones are not allowed, and tripods/selfie sticks aren’t too. (Although some vendors will try and sell selfie sticks outside the Colosseum, it is not allowed inside – as it could damage the structures)

We recommend not to carry huge camera bags – travel light to breeze through security.

Safety Tips for Visiting the Colosseum

Being a popular landmark in a touristy city, you have to take care of yourself and your belongings when visiting the Colosseum.

The Arch Of Constantine from the Colosseum

Always beware of your surroundings, especially when you walk the Colosseum grounds, and wait in a queue to enter the site.

There are people crowding at the entrance gate, and this is where you must be paying attention. Buy an anti-theft bag to store your wallet, camera, and other essentials.

Anti-theft bags are equipped with slash-proof material, and they will help ward off thieves.

Don’t keep your cellphone and wallet in the back pocket of your jeans or pants. Pickpocketing is an issue at the Colosseum as well.

Visitors walking the corridor checking exhibits at the Colosseum

For photography (changing lenses, clothing, shoots, etc) consider visiting in the mornings or evenings. Both times of day are great to beat the crowds – there will be fewer people, so you can surely take the time to adjust your camera or change outfits for that Instagrammable shot!

It is safe to visit the Colosseum before the gates open, and also at night! In general, be aware of your surroundings though.

When you are visiting the Colosseum, you will also encounter people coming to you, trying to sell tickets or offer guided tours. In fact, we had an old gentleman ask us for tickets like 3 times, and later 2 more ladies offered us tours. Try not to engage in any talk, and just say, ‘we got them, thank you.’ And just move on.

What to See at the Colosseum Grounds

The archaeological site of the Colosseum is extensive and includes several areas when you buy your entry ticket or a guided tour.

Without a ticket, you can enter the Colosseum complex, walk around, or sit down at an empty bench.

Outer ring of the Colosseum

Outside the Colosseum, you can check out the following,

  • Statue Of Nero: Located right in front of the Colosseum (across from the metro station) is the base of the Colossal Statue of Nero. There is nothing left there as such (we went looking for it, lol), but there is a plaque that reads “Area Del Basamento del Colosseo di Nerone” – where it stood.
  • The Arch Of Constantine : This is a triumphant arch, located in front of the Colosseum. It is stunning to look at, and is a great photo spot. The Arch Of Constantine was dedicated to Flavius Valerius Constantinus or Constantine the Great, considered to the first Christian Emperor of Rome.
  • The Outer Ring: This is the first layer of the Colosseum wall. You can see it from the metro station, park and the grounds.

The Arch Of Constantine

The general area (after security) is open to anyone with an ordinary ticket. Grab the tickets below

  • General access with guide tickets
  • Priority general access tickets only

So here what you must see at the Colosseum (general area),

  • 2nd Floor Exhibit Of Colosseum Concession Stand Food & Drink : Near the elevator on the 2nd floor of the Colosseum are some quirky artifacts displaying used cups and spoons from ancient times.
  • 2nd Floor Balcony: Here you will find exhibits and displays of the Colosseum. As you exit, you can check out the center of the Colosseum – with empty seats, and performance area. This is a great spot for photos as well, capturing the iconic structural Colosseum as the backdrop.

As a VIP or extra access ticket holder, you can visit some of the unique parts of the Colosseum that are not covered by the general ticket. Prices for these tickets and tours are expensive, but it is worth it.

  • The Arena Floor: This is the actual area where gladiators performed. In ancient times, it used to be covered in sand for participants. Check out this tour for arena here
  • The Underground: These are the tunnels that lay underneath the Colosseum and were used by Gladiators and event organizers. Check it this tour for underground + arena access here
  • 3rd, 4th & 5th Floors: Although often closed, but our guide mentioned that you could access the higher floors for some amazing panoramic view. It is believed that this is where the slaves and lowest citizens sat.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

Along with the Colosseum, you will have access to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. Do check out the following areas

On The Palatine Hill

  • The access to the Palatine Hill is on Via di San Gregorio
  • Part of the Claudian Aqueduct: Aqua Claudia was one of the four great Roman aqueducts, today you’ll see a part of this structure after entering the Palatine hill entrance.
  • Caldrons For Heating Floors: When our guide mentioned that it was used for heating the floors, we were impressed. Today these are in ruins. These caldrons were used for heating water which in turn heated the floors.
  • Terrazza Belvedere del Palatino: One of the prime spots here, which we personally liked is the Terrazza Belvedere del Palatino. From here you can get uninterrupted city views of Rome and the UNESCO Heritage site complex.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

In The Roman Forum

  • Arch Of Titus : When you walk towards the Forum, you’ll see the Arch of Titus. It was built to commemorate Titus’ victory after he suppressed a revolt in Jerusalem.
  • Via Sacra: This is the street that runs through the arch, considered to be a victorious walk
  • Temple Of Venus: You will see this structure from the Coloseeum, second floor. This is the Temple of Venus, built under Emperor Hadrian. It was a huge temple, and now it remains in ruins.
  • Temple Of Romulus: This is a temple dedicated to Valerius Romulus who was the son of Maxentius who was deified.  The bronze doors of the temple are said to be original, dating back to 309 AD.

Arch of Titus

  • Temple Of Julius Caesar: Temple Of Julius Caesar is one of the stunning structures at the Roman Forum, and an iconic one. It was the center of the Roman Forum for everybody to pray.
  • The Curia (Senate House): This is considered to be one of the best-preserved structures at the Roman Forum where debated issues and topics of importance.
  • Temple Of Saturn: Temple of Saturn, dating back to 497 BC.

Colosseum Interesting Facts

The Colosseum is one of the world’s most famous and iconic landmarks. It’s an ancient amphitheater that began its construction in 72 AD, by the Flavian ruler – Emperor Vespasian. It was opened by his immediate successor and eldest son, Titus in 80 AD.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

It took less than a decade to be built. With this timeline in mind, the Colosseum is close to 2000 years old!

Did you know? The amphitheater is more than 1,500 years older than the Taj Mahal!

Although we all know this structure as the Colosseum, it was actually named the Flavian Amphitheater, and it was the largest in the Roman world.

The amphitheater was created for public entertainment. It was used for gladiator fights, animal hunts, and other public events. It had a huge seating capacity of 50,000 people . What remains today is just a portion of the massive structure that once existed!

The most common shows that took place at the Colosseum were gladiator fights. They fought one another at the Colosseum arena and people came to watch these fights. It is believed that this kept the general public engaged, busy and happy through these shows!

So to them, it was like a sporting event or live entertainment.

Many of the gladiators who fought were actually slaves. Many lost their lives in the process, and many remained an ’icon’ when they won!

Colosseum levels inside

When you enjoy the Colosseum tour, you can see different tiers or levels of floors. Looking down you can view the sand-covered floor where many historic events took place. This is the ‘arena’.

There are still remnants from ancient times where slaves were kept in tunnels, before being released into the arena during games. Exotic animals were also kept for slaughtering at shows.

With a grim past, but with an architectural marvel, the Colosseum is now regarded as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

When you visit the Colosseum, it is like going through different pages of history. It saw greatness and grandeur – the colossal structure! There was the loss of lives, defeats, and deaths.

Gradually even the Roman Empire fell into disarray, and it was left unattended. There were earthquakes, plundering, and damage.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

When you walk through the lanes, see broken columns, and ruins sprinkled everywhere, you will feel like your Ancient History class has come alive!

The Colosseum, today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it has a place on the list of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Visiting Colosseum Grounds: Our experience

We stayed close to the Colosseum and the city centre when we visited Rome. This made it easy to walk to the site in the morning for photos.

We arrived at 7:00 am at the complex and got some amazing sunrise pictures without crowds. This was also great to go on a stroll at the complex before the gates open.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

We booked our skip-the-line tickets with a tour guide and met him near the Metro line B entrance gate. From there we flew through security and started the tour.

Keep in mind the Colosseum only has a couple of designated washroom areas only!

Our tour was for 3 hours. We took the stairs to reach the second-floor exhibits, heard stories of Ancient Rome, and checked out various structures inside the Colosseum. The balcony area with views of the arena (from there) was mind-blowing!

We spent 2 hours inside the complex and another hour at the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. We wandered the Palatine Hill area ruins first, before making our way to the terrace for views!

The tour ended after exploring the Roman Forum.

In total, we spend about 5 hours (tour and our sightseeing time). We enjoyed every bit of it!

The weather in November in Rome was pleasant, and we had a great time. Highly recommend booking a tour to learn about the site, and then add an extra hour or so to explore on your own if interested!

Will you visit?

The Colosseum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome, and for good reason! It’s a truly unique experience that you won’t want to miss out on while visiting this beautiful city.

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

Here is a quick trivia question for you:

What is the most iconic visual symbol for Rome and the Roman Empire?

Answer: The Colosseum .

We see it on T-shirts and on all kinds of souvenirs. We see it in movies and through various mediums.

It was perhaps the most important site for the ancient Romans due to its socio-political significance. It provided entertainment and brought masses of people together. It also spoke volumes about the culture and histories that surrounded the presence of the emperors and the gladiators. More light-hearted events took place there such as re-enactments of sea battles, but so did more sombre occasions such as public executions.

This magnificent Flavian amphitheater is a must-see attraction for any traveler who is visiting Italy.

But when is the best time to visit it to avoid the crowds and enjoy the experience to the fullest?

This article will provide you with some useful tips that can be used to strategically plan your trip to the Colosseum.

Colosseum opening hours

The Colosseum is generally open all seven days of the week for the public.

It is only closed on the following dates:

  • 1st January for New Year’s Day
  • 1st May for Italy’s Labour Day (Festa del Lavoro)
  • 25th December for Christmas day

The opening hours of the Colosseum should be taken very careful note of. Throughout the year the timings change, mostly due to the change in daylight hours. Have a look at the following timings:

  • 2nd January-15th January: 8:30-4:30 PM
  • 16th February-15th March: 8:30-5:00 PM
  • 16th March-last Saturday of March: 8:30-5:30 PM
  • Last Sunday of March-31st August: 8:30-7:15 PM
  • 1st September-30th September : 8:30-7:00 PM
  • 1st October-last Saturday of October: 8:30-6:30 PM
  • Last Sunday of October-31st December: 8:30-4:30 PM

But with being one of the famous places in ancient Rome , is it actually easy to access and fully enjoy the Colosseum?

view of colosseum in Rome

Best time of the year to visit the Colosseum

Considering that the Colosseum is practically an open-air site, the climate plays a huge role on your experience of it. What can you expect at different points of the year?

  • Spring (March to May) : Spring provides pleasant, breezy temperatures as well as sunshine, but there may be possible overcrowding of the Colosseum during Easter holidays.
  • S ummer (June to August) : The weather is very hot and sunny, with long lines due to peak season and high temperatures inside the Colosseum.
  • Autumn (September to November) : This season witnesses mild temperatures and fewer tourists.
  • Winter (December to February) : The weather is colder and wetter, with possible earlier closures and reduced hours of monument visitations.

We want to lay emphasis on the most crowded times:

  • Tourist season: The high season runs from June to August, with peak crowds in July and August.
  • Holidays: Periods such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Easter are particularly chaotic for visits to any monument.

Always try to recognize the overlap of these different factors when choosing your day to visit the Colosseum.

Best day of the week to visit the Colosseum

Although it can be a bit trickier to determine the best days to tour the Colosseum, we can infer that the weekdays may be a better time to go.  The weekends are generally more crowded, especially on Sundays. This is because most tourists find time to spare to travel during the weekends.

If you are lucky enough to have a few weekdays as part of your trip to Rome, take full advantage of them and book visits to ancient sites such as the Colosseum on those days!

Is it better to see the Colosseum at night?

Lit up with a luminescent glow against an inky sky, the Colosseum at night is sensationally striking at night. In our opinion, the best time of the day to visit the Colosseum depends on what you would prefer to encounter.

Along with a unique beauty cast within the Colosseum at night, there is a thrill to exploring it when its darker outside. The atmosphere feels more tense and eerie, creating a perfect backdrop for the stories of the amphitheater to come to life.

However, since night tours operate after the opening hours for the public, they tend to be more expensive as well.

Natural light flooding the site during the day makes it a more favourable opportunity to notice the architectural details much better. You will have a clear, crisp sight of the intricate layers of the Colosseum.

However, you may have to ward off crowds, and depending on when you go, you may have to deal with the heat.

There is a possibility to book guided tours in the evening which have tickets included. If this strikes your fancy, look into it! We provide further information at the end of this article.

Is it best to buy Colosseum tickets in advance?

As everyone in our team is always immersed in the sphere of Italian tourism, we know the ins and outs of its mechanisms and can anticipate the complications that may arise quite well.

This is why we will always advocate for preparing well and buying tickets in advance for monuments like the Colosseum!

Here are some of our best tips to navigate your ticket purchasing:

  • Book online: Purchasing tickets in advance helps you to avoid long waiting queues. On-site ticket offices also stop operating an hour before closing, which along with long lines, can create additional problems.
  • Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon: Crowds tend to be smaller during these times.
  • Consider taking an off-season tour: Autumn and winter offer a much quieter experience.
  • Consider a guided tour : Experienced guides can lead you through the Colosseum while avoiding the congested areas. Walks Inside Rome is a certified operator with brilliant tour guides who know all the nooks and crannies of the amphitheater. Not only will you be able to secure skip-the-line tickets, but we can also ensure that you will have the most holistic experience of the awe-inspiring amphitheater.

With a little bit of planning, it is possible to visit the Colosseum at any time of the year and enjoy it to the fullest.

We encourage you to use this guide to make some strategic decisions. Consider how you would like to experience the Colosseum. Would you want an overview of its functions and histories? Would you also like to tour the Roman Forum which is just adjacent to the Colosseum? Is there a particular part of the Colosseum you would like to explore more deeply?

Here are some tour possibilities:

  • Private Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour with Arena Floor: Combine your venture into the world of the Colosseum with the exploration of the Roman Forum and the Palatine hill, where Rome is said to have been founded.

TRAVEL TIPS

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO VISIT THE COLOSSEUM?

The Colosseum attracts millions of visitors every year and is one of Rome’s most popular sites. That being said, it is also home to some of the longest lines in the city. In order to get the most out of your visit to Rome, it is vital that you plan your Colosseum visit in advance . Early birds usually have the shortest waiting time but, keep in mind, traveling during peak season means crowds no matter the time of day .

The entrance fee to the Colosseum also includes a visit to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are technically two different sites but, because they are situated next to each, they are considered one area. This means that the Colosseum ticket can be used twice: one entrance into the Colosseum (at the specified reservation time) and one entrance to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill (either the same day or within 24hrs of the reservation time). Keep in mind that the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill is a large area and usually requires at least an hour to explore – so plan your itinerary accordingly.

The Colosseum and Roman Forum/Palatine Hill open everyday at 8:30am and the last entrance is about an hour before dusk (see chart below for time schedule). All visitors are allowed to remain in the site one hour after the last entrance. Due to the significant size of the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill, the custodians will direct visitors to exit the area early in order to ensure the site can close on time – this can happen even 30 minutes prior to closing time, so be sure to allow plenty of time to visit the site .

Ticket Types

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR THE COLOSSEUM?

There are many ways to visit the Colosseum. Every reservation ticket has a timed entrance for the Colosseum so be sure to check your ticket and arrive with plenty of time to spare . Each ticket also includes one entrance to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill, as stated earlier. You can enter the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill on the same day or within 24hrs of the reservation time.

Let’s say, for example, you have a 2:00pm entrance for the Colosseum. You will need to be at the main entrance of the Colosseum closer to 1:30pm, show your ticket to the Colosseum staff and they will let you enter into the security line (you may have to wait until 10 minutes before your reservation time). The Colosseum entrance time is non-negotiable. The Roman Forum/Palatine Hill entrance is up to your discretion. You could use it in three different ways: on the same day but in the morning and arriving to the Colosseum entrance at 1:30pm; on the same day but after you have finished your visit to the Colosseum and before the last entrance time for the Forum/Palatine; the following day but entering the Forum/Palatine before the ticket expires at 2:00pm.

In addition to the standard ticket option, there are restricted-access tickets available for purchase. These upgraded tickets include access to the Colosseum’s Arena Stage , the Dungeons/Underground level of the Colosseum, and the Colosseum’s Upper Level/Third Tier . These VIP areas are accessed via the Stern entrance, commonly referred to as the Gladiator Gate entrance. This separate entrance has much shorter security lines than the main entrance. Check out the TICKETS page for a detailed list of ticket options.

Allowed / Not-Allowed

best time to visit colosseum morning or afternoon

ARE THERE THINGS I CANNOT BRING INSIDE THE COLOSSEUM?

The Colosseum requires all visitors to pass through a security checkpoint. Much like the security checks at the airport, the process is basically the same. Small trays are provided for visitors to empty their pockets and all belongings must pass through the x-ray machines. It is not uncommon for visitors to be forced to choose to either throw items away or not enter the Colosseum. In order to ensure an easy entry, here is a list of what is and is not allowed in the Colosseum:

  • small/medium bag and backpacks (no roller-bags of any size are allowed)
  • Plastic water bottles (you may be asked to empty them, but you can refill inside)
  • Non-aerosol sprays*

NOT ALLOWED**:

  • Large bags/backpacks or any kind of wheeled/roller bags
  • Glass containers/bottles
  • Weapons (including pocket knives)
  • Aerosol sprays

*It is advised to leave sentimental items at your accommodation.

**Please note: what is/is not allowed is decided by the Colosseum’s security staff and can change at their discretion. In the past, there have been times when no liquids, even water, was allowed to be brought into the Colosseum (including makeup, sunscreen, etc.). In this case, you can empty your water bottles and keep them with you to refill them inside the Colosseum.

Opening Hours

Best Time to Visit the Colosseum in Rome

Whether it’s summer or winter, there is not really a season travelers give up on visiting the Colosseum.

As a piece of general advice, I can suggest that the best way to see the Colosseum is to go when it’s not raining. Temperature doesn’t really matter, but since the tour takes place almost entirely open-air, walking without an umbrella is certainly preferred for a smoother visit.

As far as the season goes, summer is packed at any time of the day. July and August are crazy busy months, but if this is the only time you can take your holiday, you might want to book online or a tour with a skip-the-line entrance.

Likely, you will find fewer queues in the afternoon, while in the morning it’s always more crowded. Just keep in mind that you need to allow enough time to queue and visit. The ticket is valid for 48 hours, so you can visit the second attraction the day after.

A trick to skip the line when visiting the Colosseum can be to head to the Roman Forum first, which we usually found less busy. The ticket is valid for the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, so for the Colosseum, you will enter directly without having to queue for the ticket. The line for the Forum is usually shorter, but again this is not always the case. In the high seasons, mainly summer and December, also here you may find many people.

>> Insider’s tip: I suggest visiting the Colosseum in Rome early morning in the summer months because too hot later in the day, and in the early afternoon in less busy months like February and March because otherwise, it’s too cold.

If you really want to visit the Colosseum before the Forum, try to be there at least half an hour before opening time.

In any case, if you would like to skip the queue, you either book a tour or buy a skip-the-line Colosseum ticket. Read below for more info.

Make sure you read our exhaustive guides to visiting Rome in August and Rome in December .

How much does it cost to visit the Colosseum in Rome?

The ordinary ticket for the Roman Colosseum costs 16€ (16+2€ if you book online) and gives you access also to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. It’s valid for 24 hours and allows for one entry to each attraction. For EU citizens between 18 and 25 years of age, the ticket is 2€.

For the Colosseum with the Arena and the Dungeon included, the Full Experience ticket is 22€ (+2 € if you book online) and you will visit each area with a guide.

The 48-hour Roma Pass gives you access to 1 attraction for free, while the 72-hour Roma Pass to 2 attractions for free and several with a discount. The Colosseum is among the attractions you can choose to enter for free. You will also have skip-the-line access. Click here for more info on Roma Pass and to buy it .

Entrance to the Colosseum is free every first Sunday of the month.

How to buy the Colosseum tickets

IMPORTANT: To visit the Colosseum you MUST book your spot so that you have an allocated date and time, otherwise you can’t enter.

From October 18th, 2023, it’s mandatory to have a nominative ticket for all types of entrance tickets, whether you buy it on travel websites, from the call center, or at physical ticket offices. This means that you will be asked to show your ID. To avoid long queues, when you are at the entrance of the Colosseum, keep your ID easy to reach.

Also on October 18th, 2023, the ticket office in Via Salara Vecchia opened for the sale of tickets to individual visitors while supplies last.

Until December 15th, 2023, the Colosseum tickets will cost 1€ extra as part of a fundraising initiative to help the areas hit by the floods in Italy.

Apart from buying them at the entrance, you can purchase your tickets in two more ways:

  • online by purchasing your ticket from the official website or online vendors like Get Your Guide . If you have already purchased a Roma Pass or Omnia Card and have free skip-the-line access, you still need to reserve your entrance. You can do so from the website of the official partner Coopculture . If you scroll down, below the opening hours, you will find additional information for Roma Pass holders.

What to see in the Colosseum

The archaeological site of the Colosseum is very big and includes several areas. The general area is open to anyone with an ordinary ticket, while the arena and the underground require a different ticket or a certified guide.

As you enter, you will have access to the audience area, where spectators used to spend hours, for some occasions even days, waiting and watching their favorite shows. Which included gory sights of hunts, gladiators fighting against each other and against wild animals brought from Africa. Sometimes even naval battles.

If you go with a guide, whether you booked a private tour or a guide from the Colosseum’s official website, you will easily access the arena and the underground. The arena is where gladiators engaged in the fight, which otherwise, you can only see from the top, while in the underground you can see the complex architecture that led gladiators and animals up to the arena.

Even though Constantine the Great banned the gladiators’ shows in 326, the fights in the Colosseum carried on until 404 when Honorius put an end to them after a monk was stoned to death during a show.

This marked the end of the gory parades but also the beginning of the consistent sacking of the Colosseum. Its marble was turned into lime building material, and its stones were used to build churches and palaces. Adding the heavy damage caused by several earthquakes, it explains some signs of fixing and why some parts collapsed, such as the southern third.

Only in the 18th century did Pope Benedict XIV put an end to the systematic depredation because of the belief that the Colosseum in its heyday had also been used as a place of martyrdom for early Christians. Even this fact didn’t really find historical confirmation, the pope consecrated the amphitheater, making it a symbol of both pagan and Christian times.

New panoramic elevator in the Colosseum

*Update* The use of the elevator will be temporarily suspended from February 8th, 2024.

Recently, a panoramic glass elevator sponsored by the Italian Cinema Orchestra was opened to further increase the already extensive usability of the Colosseum. The elevator guarantees all visitors, with greater attention to those with mobility difficulties, to overcome the 100 steep steps that separate the first tier from the intermediate gallery, thus enjoying a unique view of the entire monument.

Built fully in line and with full respect to the original construction and fitting harmoniously into the monument, the use of pressure anchor points guarantees the total reversibility of the work.

The construction of the lift allows everyone, nobody excluded, to reach the gallery between the 2nd and 3rd levels that has been opened to the public after a painstaking work of restoration and conservation. The history and life behind this newly open space can be experienced thanks to the suggestive lighting system that enhances the construction, the plastered surfaces and graffiti, and an educational set-up to allow for an evocative visit and time travel.

Visiting the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Included in the ticket to the Colosseum is also the entrance to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. These are very interesting archaeological sites because they give a good picture of what life in ancient Rome was like.

While the Roman Forum was the place where daily trading, administrative, and religious life took place, Palatine Hill is home to several imperial villas.

In May 2022, the southern slopes of Palatine Hill reopened for tourists to visit. However, they remain closed from October to spring.

On the same Palatine Hill, however, there still are some places closed to the public. These are:

  • Domus Transitoria (Emperor Nero’s first palace)
  • Casa di Livia (Livia’s House)

Why you can’t miss Rome’s Colosseum

Symbol of the opulence of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum is a monument to human engineering. Today welcomes thousands of visitors every day, going back to its original purpose when it was built in the 1st century AD.

The world’s largest amphitheater, the Colosseum started its decline in 438 AD, when emperor Valentinian III banned the gladiators’ games. During the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was used for different purposes, such as the place for artisan workshops, a hospital for animals, and even housing. Until only recently a painstaking work of archaeological digging and renovation shed light on its original functions.

Practicalities: Colosseum information + tips

Last but not least, here is all you need to know before you go. Find the Colosseum hours, the Colosseum ticket price, how to save, and where to buy Colosseum tickets.

I will also mention tips on how to get to the Colosseum and what is best not to carry to avoid delays and being refused entrance.

Where it is: the Colosseum address

Piazza del Colosseo 1.

How to get to the Colosseum

By metro is the easiest way to get to the Coliseum. Colosseo station along line B is tight in front of the entrance, so this is the best way to get to the Colosseum from Termini or Ostiense/Piramide.

By bus. Some of the buses arriving directly at the Colosseum are n. 51, 75, 85, 87, 118 to Piazza del Colosseo; tram 3 and 8 in Via Celio Vibenna behind the Colosseum. Alternatively, you can get off in Piazza Venezia and reach the Colosseum with a pleasant walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali.

On foot. If you are staying in a hotel in the city center , getting to the Colosseum walking is the best way so you won’t have to wait for the bus and you can already view other buildings and attractions along the way.

Services for disabled people

The Colosseum features an elevator for disabled people to access the upper floor. You need to ask the staff at the ticket booth and you will be accompanied and on top, there will be more staff to assist.

The complex has also accessible toilets equipped for people with physical disabilities. For this, too, ask the staff.

Ask emperor Nero for info

A new service in the Colosseum and Roman archaeological park is the digital information service with the help of emperor Nero, nonetheless. Whether it’s historical information or practical information for visiting the Colosseum that you need, you just need to ask Nero and he will deliver. Even with more grace he was known for at his time.

Open the official website of the ancient site with your smartphone or tablet and on the bottom left side, your chat box with Nero will open. If you are shy, the emperor will break the ice: “Let me introduce myself. I am Nero, Roman Emperor from 54 to 68 AD… I am here to give service information about the Colosseum Archaeological Park. Dead? Well, yes… but I have been brought back to life as artificial intelligence.”

Start from here and ask him anything, who better than him will know Rome’s imperial times?

What to wear when visiting the Colosseum + what to bring and what NOT to bring.

  • Comfortable shoes. Whether you are going to the dungeon and the arena or not, you will walk a lot and climb quite a few stairs, so comfortable shoes are highly recommended. For both the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, as ideally you will be visiting these on the same day.
  • Sunscreen. If you are going in summer, don’t forget to wear and bring sunscreen with you. The Colosseum is open-air and has hardly any covered space so you will be exposed to the sun almost all the time.
  • Bottle of water. Especially in summer, but not only, staying hydrated is important. A visit to Rome’s Colosseum does last for a couple of hours, so carry a bottle of water to ensure that. In the hot season I did see some tourists faint, so take care of your hydration and take something for low blood pressure if you are subject to that. You can refill your bottle from the fountains inside the Colosseum and the Roman Forum
  • DO NOT bring a large backpack, wheeled suitcase, or trolley. These are not allowed and there is no cloakroom so you won’t be allowed in. Pick a small backpack, a purse, or a crossbody bag instead.
  • DO NOT bring knives or sharp objects. These are not allowed and they will be confiscated. If you don’t want to lose them, don’t bring them with you.
  • DO NOT bring spray bottles. Do I need to explain this? Well, it has already happened that vandals ruined historical landmarks by spraying with a paint can, so these will be confiscated.
  • DO NOT bring your pets. Animals are not allowed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best way to see the colosseum in rome.

Being such a popular and crowded landmark, there are some considerations to make when planning to visit the Roman Colosseum.

  • Plan ahead. Decide what ticket you want, what you want to visit, and if it’s the case to book a private tour.
  • Book your ticket online. This allows you to skip the line at the entrance and choose your time slot.
  • Visit also the arena and the underground. For these, you will need to either book a tour or purchase the “Full Experience” ticket for 22€ that includes a certified guide.
  • Get there at least 15 minutes earlier. If you book online, you will have the right to a fast entrance but you will still need time to find your entrance, and if you have a specific slot, you should enter at your allocated time.
  • Avoid the first Sunday of the month. The ticket is free but the crowds are huge and you will hardly enjoy your visit.
  • Consider a guided tour. I always suggest visiting the Colosseum in Rome with the help of a local guide because private tours usually include a skip-the-line entrance, detailed historical information, the entrance to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, and visiting straight the most important landmarks in each of these archaeological sites.

Is the Colosseum in Rome worth visiting?

Absolutely yes! The Colosseum, known as the Flavian Amphitheater because built by the emperors of the Flavian Dynasty, rises in the heart of Ancient Rome. Its gory history and sophisticated architecture attract thousands of visitors every day.

Since its construction in the 1st century, the Colosseum has been the theater for popular shows such as hunting and gladiators’ games and fights. Even though centuries have gone by, the Colosseum shows no sign of cooling. The largest amphitheater in the world, its awe-inspiring appearance is always a source of surprise for first-time spectators.

In ancient times, it was the symbol of the glory and power of the Roman Empire. Now, even though not hosting unconventional shows any longer, it still is an iconic building of Rome revealing its past culture and social habits.

How much time do you need at the Colosseum?

If you have only one day in Rome and rushing as many attractions as possible, you can buy the basic ticket granting general admission to the first and second floors and be done in an hour or so.

If, on the other hand, the Colosseum is a landmark you have always wanted to visit and wish to explore properly and completely, you should set aside at least 2 to 3 hours. Take your time to see all the floors, stop at the Arena, and walk around the underground and dungeon where the gladiators waited to take part in the shows.

Do I need a guided tour of the Colosseum?

Booking a private guided tour is not mandatory to visit the Colosseum. You can book a basic single ticket and visit the areas open to the public, or a Full Experience ticket to be granted access to the arena and the underground. The Full Experience ticket is more expensive than the basic single admission and it includes also a guide.

The benefits of a guided tour lie in a more complete and deeper experience you can get out of your visit. A guide will tell you about the history and the facts of the Colosseum more than what you are going to find in the displayed panels.

With a guide, you will also waste less time looking for ways, stairs, and the different attractions inside the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and also Palatine Hill.

Of course, as a downside, a private tour is certainly more expensive than purchasing a single ticket.

Is there a dress code to visit the Colosseum?

There is no dress code to visit the Colosseum. Not being a holy place, there is no need to keep knees and shoulders covered. However, I suggest wearing comfortable shoes or walking sandals, comfortable trousers, and a hat if it’s summer because the Colosseum is mainly open-air.

Is there a toilet in the Colosseum?

Yes, in the Colosseum there is a toilet that’s also accessible to mobility-impaired visitors. You will find a toilet also inside the Roman Forum.

Wonderful Time in Italy We were covered from the moment we landed in Rome. The drivers were great, the connections were flawless, and it was well-planned a...

Perhaps Rome ’s most awe-inspiring ancient monument, despite the depredations of nearly two thousand years of earthquakes, fires, riots, wars and, not least, plundering for its seemingly inexhaustible supply of ready-cut travertine blocks, the enormous Colosseum still stands relatively intact.

Rome’s most awe-inspiring ancient monument

Today Colosseum is a recognizable symbol not just of Italy or the city of Rome, but of the entire ancient world. Sitting in the middle of a traffic roundabout, it was eaten away by pollution and cracked by the vibrations of cars and the metro – until a huge, 25-million-euro renovation, funded by Italian shoe giant Tod’s and completed in 2018, uncovered a much sprucer structure.

You’ll not be alone in appreciating it and during summer the combination of people and scaffolding can make a visit more like touring a contemporary building site than an ancient monument. But visit late in the evening or early morning before the tour buses have arrived, and the arena can seem more like the marvel it really is.

Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (the name Colosseum is a much later invention), it was begun around 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian. Inside, there was room for a total of around 60,00 people seated and ten thousand or so standing.

Seating was allocated according to social status, with the emperor and his attendants naturally occupying the best seats in the house, and the social class of the spectators diminishing as you got nearer the top.

There was a labyrinth below that was covered with a wooden floor and punctuated at various places with trapdoors that could be opened as required and lifts to raise and lower the animals that took part in the games.

Best Tips to Visit the Colosseum

The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an awe-inspiring testament to ancient Roman engineering and culture. As one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, it attracts millions of visitors each year who come to marvel at its grandeur and historical significance. To make the most of your visit to this ancient wonder, here are some best tips to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience.

#1 Purchase tickets in advance

The Colosseum is undoubtedly a popular attraction, and during peak tourist seasons, the lines to buy tickets can be incredibly long. To save time and avoid the hassle, it is highly recommended to purchase tickets online in advance.

You can also consider getting a combined ticket, which includes access to nearby sites like the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, maximizing your exploration of ancient Rome.

#2 Join a guided tour

To truly immerse yourself in the history and stories of the Colosseum, consider joining a guided tour. Expert guides will provide fascinating insights into the amphitheater's construction, the gladiatorial games, and the daily life of ancient Romans. Moreover, guided tours often come with skip-the-line access, further optimizing your visit.

#3 Arrive early or late in the day

The Colosseum is at its least crowded during the early morning or late afternoon hours. By arriving early or visiting near closing time, you can avoid the masses of tourists and have a more serene experience inside this ancient wonder. Additionally, the lighting during these hours offers a beautiful ambiance for capturing stunning photographs.

#4 Wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately

Be prepared for a fair amount of walking and standing during your visit to the Colosseum. Comfortable footwear is a must to navigate the uneven terrain and ancient stone steps. Also, consider dressing appropriately for the weather, as Rome can get quite hot in the summer months.

#5 Respect the historic site

The Colosseum is an ancient monument of immense historical value, so it's essential to treat it with respect. Avoid touching the walls or structures, and be mindful not to leave any litter behind. Responsible tourism ensures the preservation of this cultural treasure for future generations to enjoy.

#6 Be Prepared for security checks

For security reasons, there are strict guidelines on what you can bring inside the Colosseum. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed, so it's best to travel light. Remember to carry only essential items like your camera, water bottle, and any required medication.

#7 Check opening times and ticket

The Colosseum is open daily from 8.30am–5pm (mid-February to mid-March); 9.30am–5.30pm (late-March); 9.30am–7.15pm (April–August); 9.30am–7pm (September); 9.30am– 6.30pm (October); 9am–4.30pm (November to mid-February)

A single ticket covers the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill and is valid for 24 hours. Last entry is one hour before closing. You’re allowed to visit each attraction once during this time, and the Forum and Palatine Hill count as one site, so have to be visited at the same time.

Another option is the two-day ‘Full Experience’ ticket which includes entrance to the Colosseum and its underground area, the Museo Palatino and the Tempio di Romolo.

Queues can be a problem at the Colosseum, and while they do move quickly, during summer they’re rarely less than 100m long and are often besieged by touts.

Your best bet is to buy your ticket online in advance (booking fee in addition to the ticket price), or buy it at either entrance to the Forum early in the morning when things are usually quieter.

Alternatively, holders of the RomaPass and Omnia Cardare allowed to use a different queue.

Best things to do at the Colosseum

A single ticket covers the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill and is valid for 24 hours. You’re allowed to visit each attraction once during this time, and the Forum and Palatine Hill count as one site, so have to be visited at the same time.

Here's what to do at the Colosseum and around.

#1 Check out the Outer Walls

The grandeur of the Colosseum's outer walls is a testament to its remarkable design. Comprising three levels of arches adorned with decorative columns crowned by Ionic (at the base), Doric, and Corinthian (at the top) capitals, this awe-inspiring structure exudes architectural splendour.

Originally cloaked in travertine, the outer walls featured niches on the second and third levels, once brimming with marble statues. The upper level, adorned with slender Corinthian pilasters and punctuated by windows, played a vital role.

Here, 240 masts supported an expansive awning, ensuring that the arena's spectators were shielded from the scorching sun and capricious rain.

#2 Wander through the interior

Within the Colosseum's majestic interior, three distinct sections unfolded: the arena, cavea, and podium. The arena, where the gladiatorial combats took place, boasted a wooden floor covered with sand—a surface known as "harena" in Latin, hence the word "arena."

This ingenious arrangement prevented combatants from slipping and absorbing spilt blood, ensuring safety and maintaining the dramatic atmosphere. Beneath the arena floor, a labyrinth of underground chambers and passageways, known as the hypogeum or Sotterranei del Colosseo, lay concealed.

These secret realms housed caged animals and set the stage for various battles. Through the operation of 80 winch-operated lifts, these elements would ascend to the arena, captivating the spectators with awe-inspiring spectacles.

#3 Ascend up to the Terrazzo Belvedere

To fully appreciate the grandeur of the Colosseum, one must ascend to the top three floors collectively known as the Terrazzo Belvedere. These upper levels, along with the enigmatic hypogeum, can only be accessed through guided tours.

It is essential to make advance bookings for these exclusive experiences, which come at an additional cost of €9 per tour, in addition to the standard Colosseum ticket. For those seeking a guided tour of the Colosseum's main area, an extra fee of €5 is required on top of the general admission.

#4 Gawp at the huge Arch of Constantine

Next to the Colosseum is the huge Arch of Constantine, placed here in the early decades of the fourth century AD after Constantine had consolidated his power as sole emperor.

The arch demonstrates the deterioration of the arts during the late stages of the Roman Empire – most of the sculptural decoration here had to be removed from other monuments.

The round medallions are taken from a temple dedicated to Emperor Hadrian’s lover, Antinous, and show Antinous and Hadrian engaged in a hunt. The other pieces, taken from the Forum of Trajan, show Dacian prisoners captured in Trajan’s war.

#5 Take in the drama of the Roman Forum

The five or so acres that make up the Roman Forum were once the heart of the Mediterranean world. Although the glories of ancient Rome are hard to glimpse here now, there’s a symbolic allure to the place. At certain times of day it exudes a desolate drama that make it one of the most compelling sets of ruins anywhere in the world.

#6 Walk along Via Sacra, Ancient Rome’s most renowned street

You need some imagination and a little history to really appreciate the place but the public spaces are easy enough to discern.

Look for the spinal Via Sacra, the best-known street of ancient Rome, along which victorious emperors and generals would ride in procession to give thanks at the Capitoline’s Temple of Juno.

Towards the Capitoline Hill end of the Via Sacra, the large cube-shaped building is the Curia, the meeting place of the Senate, which was built on the orders of Julius Caesar as part of his programme for expanding the Forum.

What you see now is a third-century-AD reconstruction. Inside, three wide stairs rise left and right, on which about three hundred senators could be accommodated with their folding chairs.

#7 Seek out the Arch of Septimius Severus

Near the Curia, the Arch of Septimius Severus was constructed in the early third century AD by his sons Caracalla and Galba to mark their father’s victories in what is now Iran.

Next to the arch, the low brown wall is the Rostra, from which important speeches were made (it was from here that Mark Anthony most likely spoke about Caesar after his death). To the left are the long stairs of the Basilica Julia, built by Julius Caesar in the 50s BC after he returned from the Gallic wars.

A bit further along, on the right, rails mark the site of the Lacus Curtius, the spot where, according to legend, a chasm opened during the earliest days of the city and the soothsayers determined that it would only be closed once Rome had sacrificed its most valuable possession into it.

Marcus Curtius, a Roman soldier who declared that Rome’s most valuable possession was a loyal citizen, hurled himself and his horse into the void and it duly closed.

#8 Explore the Temple of Castor and Pollux

Next to the Basilica Julia, the enormous pile of rubble topped by three graceful Corinthian columns is the Temple of Castor and Pollux. It was dedicated in 484 BC to the divine twins or Dioscuri, who appeared miraculously to ensure victory for the Romans in a key battle.

#9 Head to Nero’s House of the Vestal Virgins

The House of the Vestal Virgins is a second-century- AD reconstruction of a building originally built by Nero. It features four storeys of rooms set around a central courtyard, fringed by the statues or inscribed pedestals of the women themselves, with the round Temple of Vesta at the near end.

#10 See the impressive Basilica of Maxentius

Almost opposite the House of the Vestal Virgins, a shady walkway to the left leads to the Basilica of Maxentius. In terms of size and ingenuity, it’s probably the Forum’s most impressive remains.

Begun by Maxentius, it was continued by his co-emperor and rival, Constantine, after he had defeated him at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 1 AD.

#11 Climb up to the Arch of Titus

The Via Sacra climbs more steeply to the Arch of Titus, built by Titus’s brother, Domitian, after the emperor’s death in 81 AD, to commemorate his victories in Judea in 70 AD and his triumphal return from that campaign.

Best places to stay

There’s plenty of accommodation in Rome , with a good choice of hotels, boutique hotels and contemporary B&Bs. But it’s always worth booking in advance, especially when the city is at its busiest – from Easter to July, from September to the end of October, and during Christmas and New Year. Here are the best places to stay in Rome for the Colosseum.

Consider also staying across the river in Prati, a pleasant neighbourhood, nicely distanced from the hubbub of the city centre proper and handy for the Vatican, or in lively Trastevere, also on the west side of the river but an easy walk into the centre.

Many of the city’s cheapest places are located close to Termini station, but this isn’t the nicest part of town.

Centro Storico

There are plenty of moderately priced places in the centro storico and around Campo de Fiori. However, you’ll need to book well in advance to be sure of a cheaper option in the centre.

The Tridente, Trevi and the Quirinale Hill

Up towards Via Veneto and around the Spanish Steps are more upscale accommodation options, although there are a few affordable options here too.

How to get here

The Colosseum is easy to reach. If you feel comfortable enough, you can walk here from anywhere in the central area. Buses #75 and #118 both stop outside the Colosseum. Tram #3 has a stop a couple of minutes away from the Colosseum.

Best time to visit the Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome, so it tends to get crowded throughout the year, especially during the peak, hot summer months of June, July, and August.

However, the number of visitors tends to be lower during the winter months (November to February) and early morning hours. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends. If you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, consider visiting during spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October).

To avoid large crowds, consider visiting the Colosseum early in the morning when it opens or later in the afternoon closer to closing time. These times are generally less busy than midday. Need more information to choose the best month for your visit? Read our article about when to go to Italy .

Stay tuned for insider tips on how to make the most out of your visit to this iconic ancient wonder!

Weather and Climate in Rome

The weather and climate in Rome is an important factor to consider when planning a visit to the Colosseum. Rome boasts a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters.

During the summer months, temperatures can range from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius ( 77 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit ), while in winter, it can be around 7 to 15 degrees Celsius ( 45 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit ).

It is worth noting that summer in Rome tends to be crowded with tourists and the high temperatures can pose challenges for outdoor activities, such as exploring the Colosseum.

It is advisable to visit during the spring or fall seasons when the weather is more pleasant and there are fewer crowds.

For those who prefer cooler temperatures and less crowded conditions, the winter months can be a viable option, although it is worth noting that there tends to be frequent rain during this time of year.

To make the most of your visit, it is recommended to check the weather forecast in advance and dress accordingly.

Don’t forget to pack sunscreen and hats for the summer, as well as an umbrella or raincoat for the winter or rainy days.

Crowds and Tourist Seasons

Crowds and tourist seasons greatly impact visits to the Colosseum. When planning your trip, it is important to consider factors such as high season, shoulder season, low season, and weekdays vs. weekends.

During peak tourist seasons like summer and major holidays, the Colosseum tends to be more crowded. This can affect your experience, as long lines and large crowds may make it difficult to enjoy the site. To avoid excessive crowds, visiting during the shoulder season (spring and fall) can be a good option. The weather is enjoyable, and tourist numbers are typically lower compared to summer.

Winter, on the other hand, is the low season for tourism at the Colosseum. This means fewer crowds and shorter lines, allowing for a more intimate and relaxed experience. However, keep in mind that some areas of the Colosseum may have restricted access or reduced operating hours during this time.

Regardless of the season, weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends. If possible, plan your visit for a weekday to avoid larger crowds and have a more enjoyable and less crowded experience.

Considering the crowds and tourist seasons at the Colosseum is crucial for making the most of your visit. By choosing the right time, you can have a more enjoyable and less crowded experience.

Best Time to Visit the Colosseum – Overview

When you decide to visit the Colosseum can have a huge impact on your experience. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but we’ll go through the essentials in this sections.

Overall Best Time of the Day to Visit the Colosseum

Mornings are relatively quiet and crowds start to come around lunch time, so you’ll want to come around 8.30 AM to skip the big crowds or join a Colosseum tour at night .

Also, an early start can give you the calm and space to take in the majesty of the Colosseum without the distraction of heavy crowds. Of course, you cannot expect to be the only visitor in the morning, but we can guarantee you’ll have a better time than in the afternoon.

The Best Time to Visit the Colosseum for Shorter Lines

If waiting isn’t your thing, consider the winter months for your visit. November through February, except for the holiday season, usually sees shorter lines. You might need a warm jacket, but the trade-off for quick entry is worth it.

The months of April to June and September to October offer more comfortable weather and smaller crowds. This means you’ll spend less time waiting in line and more time enjoying the Colosseum.

Early Hours and Late Afternoons

One way to avoid crowds and tour groups is to plan your visit during the early hours or late afternoons.

Typically, the Colosseum is less crowded during these times, allowing you to explore without as many crowds.

Arriving early in the morning or visiting the Colosseum at night in the afternoon also provides the opportunity to capture stunning photos with fewer people in the background.

Peak, Moderate, and Off Seasons

Understandably, summer brings the most people. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, spring and fall strike a good balance. You’ll find more room to move and less waiting, all with pleasant weather. Winter is the quietest, which can be great if you don’t mind a bit of cold.

Comparing Weekday and Weekend Crowds

When planning your visit, it’s worth considering the difference between weekday and weekend crowds at the Colosseum.

Weekends tend to be busier with more visitors, while weekdays generally have fewer tourists. If you prefer a quieter and less crowded experience, visiting the Colosseum on weekdays might be the better option for you.

However, even on weekends, you can still enjoy your visit by arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the peak hours.

Weather and Seasonality

Weather plays a big part, too. The scortching heat of summer can be tough, so if you do choose a summer visit, bring water and sunblock. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures, making your time outdoors much more comfortable.

The Effects of the Weather on Your Visit

Rome’s weather can have a significant impact on your visit to the Colosseum. It’s important to consider the weather conditions when planning your trip, as it can affect your overall experience.

During the summer months, Rome tends to experience high temperatures and can be quite humid. This can make visiting the Colosseum during the peak season uncomfortable, with long lines and crowded spaces.

In contrast, visiting during the shoulder season can provide a more pleasant experience. The shoulder seasons, which are typically spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds.

This means you’ll have a more comfortable visit, with shorter lines and the opportunity to explore the Colosseum without feeling overwhelmed by the heat or large crowds.

Advantages of Shoulder Season

Shoulder season – that’s spring and fall – combines the best of both worlds: fewer people and good weather. With milder temperatures, you can enjoy your visit without the discomfort of extreme heat. This allows you to spend more time exploring and appreciating the Colosseum.

Additionally, the shoulder season offers the opportunity to experience the Colosseum with shorter lines. As it’s not during the peak tourist season, you’ll likely encounter fewer crowds and have a more relaxed visit.

Maximizing Your Experience Booking in Advance

No matter when you go, booking in advance is key. We recommend booking your tickets ahead of time, which not only saves you waiting time but also can get you a better deal. Some tickets include guided tours, which can add a lot to your visit.

Colosseum Tickets: Combos and Skip-the-Line

Other than only the entrance tickets, you will want to look into combo tickets or skip-the-line options. They might cost a bit more, but the time you save makes them valuable. Plus, they come with perks like entry to other nearby sites or special areas within the Colosseum not everyone gets to see.

Additionally, skip-the-line passes allow you to bypass the long queues and enter the Colosseum more quickly, saving you valuable time and ensuring a smoother visit.

With careful planning, you can maximize your experience and create lasting memories.

The Colosseum was built as an entertainment venue for the Romans who could attend spectacles such as gladiator games and animal hunts.

In the year 438, the gladiatorial games were abolished and the Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476, leaving the Colosseum to slowly degrade.
