Sunny days in Kansas City, Photo Credit: Visit KC

More than 200 years after its founding at the confluence of the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails in western Missouri, Kansas City is a surprisingly modern metropolis known for its barbecue, jazz heritage and stunning Romanesque fountains. Here are some more tidbits you should know before visiting.

The best time to visit Kansas City

Kansas City rarely gets crowded, so seasonal influxes are not an issue, but weather can be. The region enjoys four distinct seasons, with cold winters and hot, humid summers.

During September and October, Kansas City experiences warm sunny days and cool nights, making fall the ideal time to visit if you plan on exploring the city in comfort.

Autumn is also when you can partake in the city’s biggest annual festival, the American Royal, held from early September to mid-November at the fairgrounds. This ongoing series of rodeos, cattle exhibitions and live entertainment centers around the World Series of Barbecue in early October, the premier such event in the entire world.

And if you happen to be visiting in March, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is sure to please. It’s one of the nation’s largest at just over a mile long, so there are plenty of themed floats, bands and performers.

Should visitors rent a car in Kansas City?

Since the city is relatively spread out, there is little traffic and parking is generally easy, we’d highly recommended renting a car for your Kansas City visit.

And whether you stay downtown or in Country Club Plaza, the city’s two most popular areas, many of the sights are far enough away to require driving.

As the largest city in Missouri and one of the biggest cities in the entire Midwest, Kansas City is loaded with things to do. From one of the NFL’s most successful franchises to mouthwatering barbecue and the birthplace of Walt Disney, Kansas City is full of fun things to see and do.

This post will highlight the best things to do in Kansas City, plus other things to know for your trip, like how to get there and how to get around.

The Best Things to Do in Kansas City

1. visit the negro leagues baseball museum.

The Negro Leagues are one of the most important aspects of baseball history, and Kansas City was the home of the most successful Negro League team. Nowadays, the country’s best museum celebrating the rich heritage of the Negro Leagues can be found in the heart of Kansas City.

Located in the same building as the American Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum walks visitors through the history and impact of the Negro Leagues. It showcases the bright moments, the dark history, and the ultimate triumph that the leagues experienced before baseball was ultimately fully integrated.

Tickets cost $10 for general admission and can be purchased online at the museum’s website.

2. Eat Some Iconic Kansas City Barbecue

Kansas City is known all around the United States for its barbecue, and it doesn’t disappoint. Kansas City barbecue is the real deal, and there are several great places to grab it while visiting the city.

A Kansas City specialty that you won’t want to miss is burnt ends, which are fatty, delicious pieces of beef that cost a premium to try.

We spent time visiting the best barbecue restaurants in Kansas City, and we ranked our favorites in the next section. From sandwiches to meat by the pound and everything in between, the barbecue restaurants we name below have you covered.

3. Visit a Jazz Club

Kansas City is not known as the birthplace of jazz, although it was a pivotal place in the jazz movement nonetheless. Kansas City jazz was developed in the 1920’s and 1930’s as a very distinct form of jazz music, shifting largely away from other contemporary styles.

To this day, jazz is near and dear to Kansas City locals, and the best way to experience it is by visiting a jazz club.

Many jazz clubs charge a meager cover for entry, but patrons claim the cover is worth every penny. From enjoyable music to great socialization, jazz clubs are some of the most popular entertainment venues in Kansas City, and the best place to find them is in the Historic Jazz District.

4. Explore the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is easily Kansas City’s most esteemed establishment. Located in the heart of the city, this museum boasts thousands of square feet of gallery space. Its impressive collection of invaluable paintings and sculptures by well-known artists solidifies the Nelson Atkins as one of the top art museums in the United States.

While the museum is worthy of a visit regardless of price, price isn’t even a concern. The museum offers free admission to all guests! After a visit to the museum, be sure to explore the outdoor sculpture garden and check out its giant shuttlecocks.

Art lovers might also enjoy the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, but if you are only willing or able to make it to one art museum it should be the Nelson-Atkins.

5. Hang Out in the Country Club Plaza

The Plaza is easily one of the most happening areas in all of Kansas City. This outdoor shopping and dining complex features some popular stores like Lululemon and J Crew, great local restaurants, and a little store that sells local KC products that you won’t want to miss. We spent several days here, as the Capital One Cafe is the best place to get work done in all of Kansas City.

In the Plaza, you can find popular national chains like Fogo de Chao and The Capital Grille as well as local spots, like Jack Stack Barbecue and Sweet Kiss Brigadeiro. I highly recommend checking out Sweet Kiss Brigadeiro for some authentic Brazilian treats!

6. Catch a Chiefs Game at Arrowhead Stadium

The Kansas City Chiefs have become one of the most successful teams in the NFL, and Arrowhead Stadium is their home. The Chiefs have one of the most devoted fanbases in all of football, and that is on full display throughout the season! If you aren’t able to visit during football season, another great option is to catch a Kansas City Royals baseball game at Kauffman Stadium, which is located in the same complex.

7. Grab Tacos in Kansas City, KS

Kansas City has a robust Mexican-American community, and some of the local taco shops are out of this world. While most of the city’s attractions are on the Missouri side, the best tacos are found in Kansas! We spent a couple of years living in Central Mexico, and a couple of the taco shops on the Kansas side of the border were truly reminiscent of our time in Mexico. Our favorite was Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio, whose tacos al pastor are to die for.

8. Pop into the National WWI Museum and Memorial

Of the several world-class museums in Kansas City, the National World War One Museum is arguably the best. While art lovers might enjoy the Nelson-Atkins more, the National WWI Museum is a very well-structured museum that most visitors love. It is located within walking distance of Union Station and the Crown Center, making a visit incredibly easy to tie in with other things.

9. Experience First Fridays in the Crossroads Arts District

First Fridays are a fun event for art lovers in Kansas City. The first Friday night of every month, art galleries in the Crossroads District open up for free admission to admire the artwork inside. These works are mostly produced by local Kansas City artists, and this is a great way to support individual artists. Art types range from modern art to very intricate paintings, and there is a little something that can speak to anyone.

10. Head to the River Market on Saturday Morning

City Market, also known as the River Market, is a cute area up by the bank of the Missouri River filled with local shops and vendors. On Saturday mornings, this place comes to life with a local farmers market teeming with produce vendors and small business owners peddling their wares. The River Market is the perfect place to spend a Saturday morning in Kansas City, and I personally love the Italian grocery store located inside.

11. Share a Pint at One of KC’s Award Winning Breweries

Kansas City has a slew of great breweries, but there were two that stood out to me as exceptional: KC Bier Co. and Boulevard Brewing Company . KC Bier Co. specializes in traditional German varieties of beer, and their taproom serves up delicious German food along with exceptional beers. Boulevard Brewing Company, on the other hand, is the city’s most popular and prestigious brewery and they make a wide variety of beers and serve a pretty extensive food menu. Both are exception options, but the Boulevard brewery tour really stands out as one of the best things to do in Kansas City!

12. Visit Some of the Best Children’s Museums in Kansas City

Kansas City is an incredibly family-friendly destination. We visited with our toddler and were amazed at the long list of things to check out with him! We wrote an entire post on the best children’s museums in Kansas City . From the money museum to Science City and Wonderscope, there are some really cool places to spend a day with your little ones while in Kansas City.

Each of the museums in that post are filled with interactive exhibits that are sure to keep any little one entertained. Wonderscope, especially, is worlds of fun and is a place you won’t want to miss if you’re visiting Kansas City with kids!

13. Eat Fresh Bagels from Meshuggah Bagels

Meshuggah Bagels is a local bagel joint that makes some of the best bagels we’ve ever had. We loved them so much that we returned several times to buy bagels by the dozen. If you enjoy bagels, you won’t want to miss this place. They also make fresh cream cheese in house each day, and the cinnamon sugar variety will melt in your mouth!

14. Check Out the Kansas City Zoo

Zoos are usually great places to visit while traveling to a new city with kids, and the story is the same in Kansas City. The Kansas City Zoo is a very nice place that makes for a great afternoon outside. General admission costs between $19 and $22 at the door, and is cheaper if you purchase tickets online in advance.

15. Peruse the American Jazz Museum

As I mentioned earlier, jazz music is very important to Kansas City’s history. This is well-documented at the American Jazz Museum ! Its blue room is a great spot to catch some live music, and entrance to the museum only costs $10 for adults.

Where to Get the Best BBQ in Kansas City

Kansas City is known all across the United States for its barbecue. In fact, Kansas City-style barbecue is one of the most popular styles of barbecue in the country! We visited Kansas City directly after a trip to Austin, Texas which is equally famous for its barbecue.

In our opinion, both styles are great. But there’s no denying that Kansas City has some really great barbecue joints to check out! Be sure not to skip out on the burnt ends, which are an especially famous BBQ dish in Kansas City.

Of all the barbecue joints we visited in Kansas City, Q39 was easily our favorite. The brisket was perfectly cooked, the side dishes were really something special, and the service was top-notch. There are two Q39 locations around the city, but we chose to visit the one in Midtown.

2. Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que

Located across the border in the state of Kansas, Joe’s is a tourist favorite. They’re known for their delicious sandwiches, long lines out the door, and casual environment. We tried a full gamut of plates here ranging from sandwiches to brisket and burnt ends, and we left very satisfied. It is a bit of a hike from most places in Kansas City, but it is worth the drive.

3. Jack Stack Barbecue

Jack Stack Barbecue doesn’t deserve to be at the bottom of any list. The food is really tasty and the environment is top notch! Friends told us that Jack Stack was the ritziest of the barbecue joints in Kansas City, and it didn’t disappoint.

The ambiance at Jack Stack feels much more upscale than the other two places. In fact, there appeared to be several groups of people there for a business dinner. While it felt ritzy, the prices were pretty much the same as anywhere else in Kansas City, which was a very welcome surprise.

How to Get to Kansas City

Driving to kansas city.

Kansas City is relatively remote. The only major cities within a 5-hour drive are St. Louis, Omaha, and Oklahoma City. Because of this, driving to Kansas City usually isn’t a great option for visitors. You can reach both Chicago and Dallas within 8 hours, but most people opt to fly from that distance, anyway.

Train to Kansas City

Kansas City’s Union Station does service Amtrak trains from various cities across the US. There are two Amtrak routes that run through Kansas City. One train just connects St. Louis to Kansas City. The other connects Chicago to Los Angeles with many stops along the way.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend taking Amtrak to Kansas City. The trains are slow, expensive, and will likely take even longer than driving. Since parking is free in KC anyway, bringing a car is almost always a better decision.

Flying to Kansas City

Kansas City has one major airport, and it was just completely rebuilt in the spring of 2023. Kansas City International Airport (MCI) used to be a tiny, dated airport and has since gone through a massive transition. The brand-new complex features a slew of local restaurants, coffee shops, and other amenities.

While it is still not a very connected airport, it is getting better. As Kansas City grows in popularity, airlines are offering more and more direct flight routes into its airport. We flew from Austin, TX directly to Kansas City and then Kansas City directly to Miami and had smooth experiences each time.

Getting from the airport to the city is a little bit of a different story. The airport is 15 miles north of downtown Kansas City, and most of Kansas City’s main areas are even further south. Bus route 229 is the best way to get to Kansas City from the airport without a car, and it is currently free to ride. You can find a full schedule of buses on the RideKC website .

How to Get Around Kansas City

RENTAL CAR | BUS | STREET CAR

Driving in Kansas City

Generally speaking, Kansas City is a car city. Kansas City is very spread out, and most major areas are not walkable from one another. A few central areas are within walking distance of one another, but most of the best things to do in Kansas City require driving.

For this reason (probably), street parking is almost always free! In most parts of the city, you can simply pull into any legal parking space and get out of your vehicle with no need to pay a parking meter. The only exception is in metered areas of the Power and Light District, which is essentially downtown Kansas City.

All in all, traffic isn’t bad. You can normally expect to get wherever you want to go without much disruption.

Public Transportation in Kansas City

Kansas City does have a bit of public transportation, but the system is not very robust. There is a bus system that reaches most parts of the city, but its connectivity definitely could be better. There is also a street car that runs on a 2-mile loop through downtown, but it is only helpful once you actually get downtown.

While the public transportation options are limited, there is one big upside: they are free! Just like street parking, riding on KC buses and the KC Streetcar is free.

Best Time to Visit Kansas City

Kansas City is not known for its beautiful weather. This city experiences the full seasonal swing that other midwest cities experience, typically meaning frigid winters, generally cold springs and autumns, and toasty summers. While you will get an occasional warm day in the spring and fall months, you’re more likely going to be signing up for sweater weather during these seasons.

The best time to visit Kansas City is either between late May and late June or late August and early October.

During this time you are the most likely to get warm, sunny weather. This is ideal to experience all of Kansas City’s great outdoor attractions!

While this is the most popular time of the year for tourism, the crowds in Kansas City aren’t nearly as absurd as they are in many other major cities. In fact, summer crowds might even be smaller than the crowds you’d see on the weekend of a Chiefs game!

Is Kansas City Worth Visiting?

Missouri isn’t at the top of most bucket lists, but the City of Fountains deserves more credit than it gets. Kansas City is both bigger and busier than we imagined before visiting.

The people in Kansas City are very nice, which is one huge draw. The food is spectacular, the local Kansas City pride is off the charts, and everything about the city feels laid back.

There is a lot to do in Kansas City, and I think it is absolutely worth visiting. It’s usually too remote to be a good weekend trip, but there’s plenty to do to occupy a full week. We visited for almost two weeks and there was plenty more than we wished we had time to do!

All in all, Kansas City is a fun place to visit with the entire family.

The downtown area is walkable and clean and the Nelson Atkins Museum is as esteemed as it gets. On top of that, the food is quite good! I wouldn’t rank Kansas City among the best places to visit in the United States, but it’s a great place that I’d recommend visiting if you have the time.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art appeals to many kinds of visitors, such as little kids who appreciate the giant badminton birdie installations (four 18-foot shuttlecocks, to be exact) on the 22-acre lawn, or adults who enjoy the play of light in Caravaggio's "Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness." The art museum's permanent collection spans thousands of years, includes more than 35,000 pieces and features art from Europe, Asia and America. The museum also displays interesting architectural pieces like centuries-old furniture and stained glass windows, in addition to more modern paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures and photography. Arabia Steamboat Museum Arabia Steamboat Museum

The side-wheel steamer Arabia was constructed in 1853 for powering through the muddy Missouri River waters with up to 200 tons of supplies in tow. But later, it snagged a felled tree trunk and quickly disappeared under the sea. More than a century later, David Hawley discovered the sunken steamer a half-mile from the river bank beneath 45 feet of earth; it then became the focus of the Arabia Steamboat Museum.

Today you can take a tour of the steamer's deck and hull, but there's also a great deal more to see. The museum features a general store, a cargo gallery and several other galleries with odds and ends recovered from the excavation of the great Steamboat Arabia. In addition to seeing many of the well-preserved cargo pieces that were excavated from the wreck, the tour includes a video summarizing the history of the Arabia and how they were able to retrieve the supplies.

Boulevard Brewing Company Boulevard Brewing Company free

Kansas City residents are a little bit prideful about the Boulevard Brewing Company, as if to say: "So what if  St. Louis has Anheuser-Busch , we have Boulevard." Among its many beers, this brewery offers its fans everything from unfiltered wheat (a favorite) to pale ale to pilsner. The brewery has become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest and ships its beers to more than 30 states across the U.S, and Washington, D.C. The brewery has seen such success and growth that it opened a visitors center in the summer of 2016 with beer exhibits, a larger tasting room and an expanded retail shop.

Beer connoisseurs are in for a treat at this brewery. Visitors can take a  free guided tour, which includes a short video of how the beer is made, a history of the Boulevard Brewing Company, a walk-through and also some samples. Travelers said the tour guides are insightful, entertaining and funny and offer a thorough presentation of the various types of beer.

Westport Westport free

Just north of the Country Club Plaza , Westport is a popular neighborhood where people flock to enjoy shopping, dining and a night out on the town. It's known for being the oldest established community in Kansas City and, fun fact, Westport was where pioneers began their trek along the Oregon Trail in the mid-1800s.  Today, the area is filled with bars, restaurants, local shops, entertainment venues and hotels.  There's everything from Ernie Bigg's Piano Bar and The Kick Comedy Theater to laid-back and upscale eateries. (Travelers recommend stopping in Ca Va Champagne bar to try its sparkling wines and creative cocktails.)

According to visitors, Westport is a lively neighborhood brimming with local businesses and restaurants. Many say it's easy to maneuver on foot and the bars come to life at night and on the weekends.

Country Club Plaza Country Club Plaza free

One of Kansas City's most popular places to dine, shop, movie watch or simply just walk around is the Country Club Plaza. This outdoor shopping district offers mostly chain stores (Anthropologie, Gap and the like), hotels and eateries, but also a handful of high-end shops like Michael Kors and Coach. The biggest draw here, though, is the architecture. The plaza boasts Spanish-style fountains (modeled after those in Seville), tiles and statues that fill the district and make for some excellent photo ops.

Recent patrons said Country Club Plaza, while not all that exciting, is something visitors should take at least a stroll through to enjoy the fountains and expertly designed buildings.

The National World War I Museum is arranged in narrative form, as if WWI soldiers were telling visitors their own war stories through the exhibits. What's especially moving is the glass bridge, which spans an abyss of 9,000 poppies, symbolizing the 9 million lives lost during the war.

Most agree that this private museum is a national treasure. Visitors were pleased with the wealth of information available, the interesting exhibits and the memorabilia on display.

Kauffman Stadium Kauffman Stadium

Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals make their home at Kauffman Stadium and the Royals are beloved by their Kansas City fans. The stadium was renovated in 2009 and, even better, this team has seen a resurgence over the past few years, bringing a new wave of enthusiasm across town. The Royals made a trip to the World Series in 2014 and secured a World Series win in 2015 – the first championship won by the baseball team since 1985. The stadium itself is filled with food and drink vendors, plus tickets to a game are on the more affordable side. Kauffman Stadium offers ballpark tours year-round (Tuesday through Saturday during the season, Saturdays and select Tuesdays in the offseason). Ticket prices range from $15 to $35; discounts are available for seniors and children, and group rates are available with advance notice.

Baseball fans say this stadium is beautiful and encourage visitors to attend a game during their trip to Kansas City. Travelers say the energy inside the stadium is impressive and add that the fans are welcoming and friendly.

Kansas City's City Market Kansas City's City Market

As one of the largest public farmers markets in the Midwest, City Market features more than 30 permanent merchants selling produce, specialty foods, fresh meat, home decor, flowers and more every day of the week. On the weekends, though, you can expect to find more than 150 vendors bursting with local products. (Be sure to get an early start on Saturdays and Sundays, as the stalls are only open from 7 or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. year-round.) When you’re finished exploring the pop-up shops, you can stop into a clothing boutique or grab lunch at one of the surrounding restaurants and cafes.

The market’s significance extends beyond fresh fruits and veggies, though. Founded in 1857, the space was once a site for commerce, horse trading, political rallies, circuses and more. In fact, this Kansas City staple is also home to the Arabia Steamboat Museum , which displays a collection of artifacts that were recovered from the bottom of the Missouri River 132 years after the Steamboat Arabia sank in 1856. Among the once-lost cargo items were dishes and other fine china, clothing, guns, children’s toys and even the world’s oldest pickles. Admission into the museum ranges from $5.50 (kids ages 4 to 14) to $14.50 for adults. Seniors receive a $1 discount and children 3 and younger get in free of charge. Your ticket includes a guided tour, which takes place every 30 minutes until 3:30 p.m. The museum itself is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Power & Light District Power & Light District free

This district (right next to downtown's Sprint Center) consists of more than 50 shops, restaurants and nightlife venues – and it's one of Kansas City's newer and most popular areas. One of its coolest features is its two-floor KC Live entertainment venue, which hosts about 150 concerts and other performances each year. But on an off night, there are plenty of other places to keep you busy – like PBR Big Sky (where you can ride a mechanical bull), Shark Bar (where you can dance to '90s music) or Howl at the Moon (where you can sing along with the dueling pianists).

Travelers say this is the place to go if you're looking to let your hair down and enjoy Kansas City nightlife, adding that with such a wide variety of restaurants and bars everyone should be able to find something to suit their fancy.

Kansas City Zoo Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo opened in 1909 with a modest collection of animals: four lions, three monkeys, a fox, a wolf, a badger, a lynx, an eagle and some other birds. Since then, it has expanded to become one of the most respected zoos in the country, with exhibits ranging from the $15 million Helzberg Penguin Plaza to the interactive Stingray Bay to a chimpanzee habitat praised by Jane Goodall herself. Guests can also enjoy daily sea lion shows, zookeeper chats and elephant painting demonstrations, as well as safari boat rides across the zoo’s African Plains and overnight campouts in various exhibits for kids ages 6 and older.

Recent visitors were impressed by the cleanliness of the zoo and the amount of exhibits throughout the property, but they warned that you should wear comfortable shoes. The 202-acre park requires a lot of walking, and you shouldn’t expect to see everything during your visit. Past zoogoers also recommend packing your own snacks and lunches if you plan to stay for most of the day, as the food in the park can be a bit expensive.

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

If you’re looking to take a trip down memory lane during your Kansas City vacation, The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is the place to do it. Open since 1982, this museum has the world’s largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the most robust antique toy collections on public display. You’ll find exhibits with Queen Anne-style dolls dating back as far as 1750, original Barbie dolls and vintage Hot Wheels cars. Many recent guests were thrilled to see the toys they played with as children from decades ago. Though – for that exact reason – some patrons felt this museum was better suited to nostalgic grown-ups than to children, who may quickly lose interest in the glass cases filled with old toys. Still, guests of all ages can appreciate the vast collection of small-scale items, from miniature handcarved tables and chairs to pint-sized animal figurines.

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is open Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays). It is located on the University of Missouri-Kansas campus, a few blocks south of Country Club Plaza . Admission is free for children ages 5 and younger; $5 for minors between 6 and 17 (and college students with an ID); $7 for adults older than 65 and $8 for those ages 18 through 64. Free parking is available in front of the museum. For more information, check out The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures’ website .

Hallmark Visitors Center Hallmark Visitors Center free

Chances are you've given or received a Hallmark greeting card at some point in your life. What you may not know is that Hallmark originated in Kansas City. In 1910, 18-year-old Joyce C. Hall of Nebraska gathered two shoeboxes filled with postcards and set out to create a greeting card company. More than a century later, Hallmark – still run by Hall’s descendants – is one of the largest card brands in the world.

If you’re looking for the same warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you receive a card from a loved one, recent visitors say this museum is a must-see. Wander through the exhibits at your own pace, or give the visitor center a call to sign up for an hour-long guided tour (offered every day at 2 p.m.). Either way, you’ll take a journey through the history of Hallmark with interactive displays and detailed exhibits, and you can also view a short film about the company or take a break at the gift shop. For children, the Hallmark Visitors Center offers a scavenger hunt that will send them on a mission to find specific artifacts throughout the museum.

Union Station Union Station

Kansas City’s Union Station was built in 1914 and primarily used as a train station at that time. During World War II, the 850,000-square-foot compound continued to welcome patrons with restaurants, a barber shop and a cigar store, as well as professional spaces like railroad offices and the country’s largest Railway Express Building (for shipping freight and mail). Union Station shut down in the 1980s and almost faced demolition on several occasions. It reopened in 1999 (following a three-year revitalization project) and has since drawn tourists from around the world with its stunning chandeliers and 95-foot ceilings.

In addition to hosting weddings and business meetings, Union Station also displays exhibits ranging from the newly redesigned KC Rail Experience to an interactive center known as Science City . There is also a planetarium and theaters featuring giant-screen movies and live shows. The station still shows its roots, though; just like a century ago, you can still hop on an Amtrak train and head to a new destination. Recent visitors said the historical, beautifully restored building is a must-see. They also said it’s especially great for families traveling with kids (thanks to a number of child-friendly exhibits) but noted there is something there for people of all ages.

Science City at Union Station Science City at Union Station

Science City is an interactive science center within Kansas City’s Union Station . It is geared toward children, which makes it a great place to go with your littlest travelers. Daily exhibits include the Dinolab and Digsite, where kids can unearth fossils and learn more about paleontology; a genetics lab, where budding scientists can learn how the human genome makes everyone unique; the Mr. E Hotel, which is filled with more than 20 optical illusions; the Sky Bike ride, which is suspended on a high-wire 30 feet in the air; and more. Recent visitors loved Science City, noting that they had just as much fun as their kids. Many recommended arriving early, as the center can get very crowded (even during the week, due to school field trips) and some activities and demonstrations may finish earlier in the day.

Admission into Science City costs $13.25 for ages 3 and up, plus a $1 reservation fee if you book ahead of time. This ticket allows you to go in and out of the building as you please on the day you reserve. Children younger than 3 can enter Science City free of charge. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and major holidays, though you can visit on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Parking costs between $5 and $15, depending where you park and how long you stay. Not every parking garage accepts all major credit cards, so be sure to check Science City’s website before your visit.

Arrowhead Stadium Arrowhead Stadium

Arrowhead Stadium has been the home of the Kansas City Chiefs professional football team since it opened in 1972. It is adjacent to Kauffman Stadium , where the Kansas City Royals professional baseball team plays. (In fact, there is even a private underground service tunnel between the two.)

Football fans can tour the roughly 80,000-seat Arrowhead Stadium in a number of ways. Public, guided tours last 90 minutes and take visitors through the press box, the CommunityAmerica Club Level, the locker room, the field and the Chiefs Hall of Honor Presented by Spectrum. Public tours are offered on Fridays at 2 or 4 p.m. and on Saturdays at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., and tickets cost $30 for adults and $25 for kids. If you’re looking for a more exclusive experience, consider a private guided tour (which visits the same areas of the stadium, but in a one-on-one setting) or a game day tour, which includes a 60-minute walk through the press box and the Chiefs Hall of Honor Presented by Spectrum, followed by 20 minutes on the sidelines of the field during the pregame activities. 8. Check out the Arabia Steamboat Museum

Okay, I’ll admit that when I head about visiting the Arabia Steamboat Museum my thought was, “eh, no thanks.” However, don’t write this place off!

This popular Kansas City Attraction is a must-see while visiting. The steamboat sunk in 1856 and was recovered along the Missouri River in 1988 along with all the secret cargo that was onboard.

9. Eat As Much Kansas City BBQ as you can!

You may not think that finding the best BBQ shouldn’t make this top 10 attractions in KC list, but we have to disagree.

We lived in Kansas City after we were first married for six months and after moving away we were always asked the same question. “How’s the Kansas City BBQ?”

Problem was that we hadn’t even taken the chance to try it out! We didn’t make that mistake this time around and made sure to stop and arguably the most popular KC BBQ joints- Joe’s BBQ and Q39 .

10. Watch a Show at the Kansas City Symphony

The last one this list of the top 10 attractions in KC is visiting the Kauffman Center. I mentioned earlier that this can be found in the Crossroads District.

This is where you can watch an opera, ballet or even a concert here. To find out what will be playing while you’re in in town, take a look at their event page.

As much as I prefer to support locally owned hotels when I travel, sometimes it’s nice to stay at a hotel chain for consistency and reliability. During our 48 hours in Kansas City, we stayed at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, and really enjoyed our time there. The rooms were spacious for our family of four, and they offered nice views of downtown Kansas City. Plus, we really liked its convenient location, right in the heart of it all!

Ideas for spending 48 hours in Kansas City

We had an unexpectedly great time visiting Kansas City. We didn’t realize how much history the city has, and how much arts and culture makes up the city.

best time to visit kansas city

Here’s a sampling of the fun things we did in Kansas City to help you plan your own Kansas City itinerary.

1. Start your 48 hours in Kansas City with coffee in a trolley

The best way to start your 48 hours in Kansas City is with coffee! The Made in Kansas City Trolley Cafe - River Market is a coffee shop serving up locally roasted coffee. They source from over 12 Kansas City coffee roasters!

best time to visit kansas city

Opened in 2017, the Made in Kansas City Cafe not only offers coffee and tea, but also offers local goods from bakers, makers, and artists. The cafe is a sister company of local business, Made in Kansas City, and aims to support the local community by investing in its neighbors.

What’s also unique about this cafe is that it’s in a restored Kansas City trolley! Streetcars and trolleys were a big part of Kansas City. In fact, the city once had the largest streetcar system in the country. We loved the historic aspect of this coffee shop.

2. Taste authentic barbecue at Jack Stack

You can’t go to Kansas City without trying some barbecue. It’s what the city is known for!

Our friends from Kansas City recommended Jack Stack to us. First opened in 1957 as a barbecue stand, the restaurant now has six locations throughout the city serving pork ribs, beef brisket, burnt ends, and other barbecue selections.

best time to visit kansas city

We enjoyed our Jack Stack barbecue at the Freight House, a historic railroad building in the Crossroads District. But you can also visit their other location in the Plaza area.

If you want to try some other Kansas City barbecue, check out these places as well:

  • Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que : popular barbecue chain on the Kansas side of Kansas City
  • Q39 : located in the southern part of the city on 39th Avenue
  • Zarda : another Kansas side of Kansas City barbecue joint serving pulled pork
  • Gates Bar-B-Q : Black-owned local barbecue chain founded in 1946

Alternatively, take a Kansas City barbecue tour from Barley Bus Tours, which will take you to three places to sample barbecue.

3. Sample food at the River Market

The River Market District is one of Kansas City’s oldest incorporated districts. Located along the Missouri River, the neighborhood includes a thriving farmer’s market (known as City Market), the Arabia Steamboat Museum, and many restaurants.

best time to visit kansas city

The City Market is open all year long. There, you’ll find restaurants from around the world (such as Asia and the Middle East) specialty foods, and locally-owned grocery stores. The Farmer’s Market is open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Located near the City Market is the Arabia Steamboat Museum , featuring artifacts from a recovered steamboat from the 1800s. The Arabia Steamboat Museum is open Mondays to Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. On Sundays, the museum is open from 12 - 5 pm. Tickets are $14.50 for adults and $5.50 for children aged 4-14.

4. Take a walk along the Missouri River during your 48 hours in Kansas City

The Missouri River is the longest river in the United States, and runs right through Kansas City. During the 19th century, the river served as a route towards the west territories, for families looking for new lives in the American West.

best time to visit kansas city

Prior to colonization, the Missouri River served as a path of trade, transport, and food for Native American tribes including the Otoe, the Missouria, the Ponca, and the Omaha. They would use the river as a path of migration. Throughout the years, it continued to be an important trade route for the United States.

Visitors to Kansas City can take a walk along the Riverfront Heritage Trail to enjoy views of the Missouri River. Take pictures of the Missouri River at the Town of Kansas Observation Deck.

5. Bond with your family at The Escape Game

If you’re looking for a family bonding activity during your 48 hours in Kansas City, head to The Escape Game . It's an engaging escape room experience that challenges participants to solve puzzles and clues to "escape" within a set timeframe.

best time to visit kansas city

Escape games are live-action adventures promoting teamwork and problem-solving. We love doing these types of experiences because they give us a chance to bond, collaborate, and test our wits in a fun, immersive setting. We played an escape room game at The Escape Game when we were in New York City. All our kids, from our adult son to our youngest son, really enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of the experience.

The Escape Game has five different scenarios to choose from. Each scenario - from uncovering art heists to underwater research missions (which is what we did) - is meticulously designed and has varying levels of difficulty.

Since the experience does require problem solving, communication, and critical thinking, I recommend this for families with kids ages 10 or older (The Escape Game recommends 13 years or older).

6. Learning fun at Science City during your 48 hours in Kansas City

Museums make a great learning resource for worldschooling ! So for families who love learning (like us!), a visit to Science City is a must. Located at Union Station, Science City is packed with interactive exhibits and fun activities for kids. We spent an afternoon there and had so much fun doing the brain puzzles, the genetics exhibit, and trying out the energy exhibits.

best time to visit kansas city

There are over 300 interactive exhibits at Science City, covering almost 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. There’s also a Planetarium with daily public shows. And after your visit to Science City, spend some time walking through the historic Union Station . This former railroad station, over 100 years old, now contains restaurants, a theater, and other attractions.

Science City is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. On Sundays, the museum is open from 12 -5 pm. Tickets to Science City are $15-$16.

Find out how you can travel and learn with your kids .

7. Connect with baseball history at the Negro Leagues Museum

In the 1920’s, baseball was a segregated sport, reflective of what American culture was like back then. Only white players were allowed to play in the major leagues, so black players (and other communities of color) created their own leagues. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum showcases the history of the Negro Leagues, and highlights the players who made that league important.

best time to visit kansas city

This museum is located in the 18th and Vine District, a historically black part of Kansas City. The exhibits at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum are packed with information. But one of my favorite parts of the museum is the Field of Legends, a baseball diamond with sculptures of famous Negro Leagues players.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 12 - 5 pm. Tickets to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum are $10 for adults and $6 for kids aged 5-12.

8. Find your groove at the Jazz Museum

In the same building as the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is the American Jazz Museum. This museum highlights the history of jazz music in the United States. It also pays homage to some of jazz music’s greatest talents, such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Benny Goodman.

best time to visit kansas city

Many of the exhibits are interactive, and let you listen to various jazz music clips. You really learn a lot about jazz! And there’s a jazz club at the museum, so you can watch a live music performance.

Like the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, admission to the American Jazz Museum is $10 for adults and $6 for kids aged 5-12. Hours of operation for the museum are 10 am to 5 pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 12 to 5 pm on Sundays.

9. Get your buzz on at Cafe Cà Phê

We fell in love with Vietnamese coffee when we were sampling food in Hanoi back in early 2020. The richness of the flavors and the relaxed feeling of Vietnamese coffee culture really drew us in! So when I found out Kansas City had a Vietnamese cafe, owned by a first generation Vietnamese American, we had to check it out.

best time to visit kansas city

Cafe Cà Phê does not disappoint. While they don’t have egg coffee on the menu, they do have a fantastic selection of coffee drinks that will give you the kick you need to get you going. We liked the coffee drink with ube syrup, a nod to our family’s Philippines connection! You can find Cafe Cà Phê at their brick and mortar store on 5th Street, just east of City Market.

10. Spend an afternoon at Country Club Plaza

For an afternoon snack during your 48 hours in Kansas City, head to Country Club Plaza . It’s one of the first outdoor shopping areas in the United States, modeled after the plazas of Seville , Spain. It even has a replica of La Giralda, a bell tower at Seville Cathedral.

best time to visit kansas city

Built in 1922, Country Club Plaza has fountains and sculptures, along with high end stores, locally owned boutiques, and restaurants. It’s a great place to get a bite to eat or go shopping for some Kansas City souvenirs.

We liked getting bubble tea at Bruú Café . They have a creative assortment of teas and smoothies, along with tapioca balls and jellies.

If you’re in the mood for a unique tour, book a segway tour of Country Club Plaza from Greenville Glides. The tour takes you from the Country Club Plaza to nearby Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

11. Get souvenirs at Made in KC Store

On the topic of souvenirs, one of the best places to go at Country Club Plaza for souvenirs is the Made in Kansas City Store. This store features goods from local makers!

best time to visit kansas city

The Made in Kansas City Store (which is the parent company of the Made in Kansas City Trolley Cafe) offers vendor booth style displays of each local maker. There’s an assortment of hand made crafts, goods, and food to choose from. We loved buying the locally crafted chocolates. So sweet!

There are several Made in KC stores all throughout Kansas City. So even if you don’t get to Country Club Plaza, you’ll be able to find your local souvenirs somewhere in the city.

12. Take a walking tour of Kansas City

We love taking walking tours to learn the history of a city and get a feel for its streets. And one of the best neighborhoods to do a walking tour is the Crossroads District. This neighborhood is known for its artistic vibes, full of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries celebrating local art.

13. See larger than life books at the Central Library

Book lovers will enjoy visiting the Central Library, part of the Kansas City Public Library. There’s a rooftop terrace where you can take a view of the city.

best time to visit kansas city

The highlight of the library is the Community Bookshelf , a larger than life art installation featuring giant book spines of famous books such as Catch-22, The Lord of the Rings, Winnie-the-Pooh, Green Eggs and Ham, and Fahrenheit 451. The Community Bookshelf is actually part of the library’s parking garage. So if you’re not in the mood to stroll through the library, you can still enjoy looking at these larger than life books on the street.

Summer (April to October): Summers in Kansas City is hot and humid. The temperature sometimes rises upto 76 degree Fahrenheit, in the month of July. 14 reasons Kansas City should be your next trip

best time to visit kansas city

Kansas City has hit the headlines: here are 14 reasons you should get there this year © Elliot Haney / EyeEm / Getty Images

Kansas City has been hitting the headlines in a big way – even before Taylor Swift started showing up in a box at Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs football games.

The Chiefs have clinched the Super Bowl trophy three times in the last five years; Ted Lasso, the heartwarmingly wholesome TV show starring KC native Jason Sudeikis, has won dozens of awards; and nearly every travel publication –  Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel included – listed Kansas City as one of the top places to visit in 2024.

Despite all this recent attention, Kansas City has long been obsessed with itself in the most Midwestern way: quietly. It’s practically a local ordinance for residents to wear clothing mentioning KC – and perhaps by the end of your trip, you’ll pick up a t-shirt too . While Kansas City is happy to have its turn in the spotlight, at the end of the day, it’s still the welcoming, come-as-you-are cowtown-turned-cool-town that it’s always been.

Ready to see what the Kansas City hype is about? Whether you’re spending a weekend in Kansas City or much longer, here’s a guide to the best things to do in KC.

1. Watch the beautiful game in the Soccer Capital of America

The Kansas City Chiefs might be the city’s best-known sports team, but another kind of football is also drawing big crowds. In March, CPKC Stadium , the first arena in the world purpose-built for a professional women’s sports team, opened for the KC Current’s sold-out season-starting match. This waterside soccer stadium is also helping revitalize a previously ignored section of the south bank of the Missouri River. A beer garden called Two Birds, One Stone and the Origin Hotel are slated to open in summer 2024.

Local tip: The free-to-ride KC Streetcar will have its route extended from downtown along the riverfront in time for 2026, when Kansas City will host FIFA World Cup games alongside the likes of Los Angeles, Mexico City, Boston and Vancouver.

2. Eat Kansas City’s best barbecue…

Kansas City was once home to some of the largest stockyards in the country, second only to Chicago, and smoked meat is big business. KC’s status as one of the best places in the USA to eat barbecue is thanks to Henry Perry, a Black pitmaster who opened a restaurant in the early 1900s. Though his barbecue joint no longer exists, Arthur Bryant’s and Gates Bar-B-Q claim direct lineage and remain stalwarts of the scene.

Kansas City’s barbecue culture is anything but stagnant, and a newer generation of pitmasters has added its own takes on tradition. Joe’s KC serves its legendary Z-Man sandwich from a gas station, while Q39 takes the plates in a slightly classier, but no less authentic, direction. Burnt ends – the fatty, charred ends of brisket – are a Kansas City invention and a must-order dish at any spot worth its sauce. Slap’s BBQ in Kansas City, Kansas, does some of the best. Jack Stack has a wider variety of ribs than you’ll find elsewhere, including lamb.

So where’s the best place to eat Kansas City barbecue? Even locals don’t have a definitive answer. Try as many as you can and decide for yourself.

Local tip: If you’re going to Gates Bar-B-Q, prepare to get an earful as soon as you walk in. "May I help you!" is the restaurant’s trademark phrase, and no matter how long the line ahead of you is, you’re expected to yell back your order immediately. Prep yourself by looking up the menu online before you go.

3. …and devour the rest of KC’s incredible food scene

Kansas City’s best places to eat offer menus much more diverse than barbecue, dishing up flavors from far beyond the state and the country. For a celebratory night out, try the sleek darkened dining room at Corvino , one of Kansas City’s top restaurants, or get a group together to sample all the inventive small plates at The Antler Room .

For cheaper spots to expand your palate, set off on the KCK Taco Trail , which rounds up 60 local taquerias on the Kansas side of the state line. Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio and El Camino Real are favorites. Excellent baba ganoush, chicken shawarma and other Middle Eastern flavors await at Baba’s Pantry , a Palestinian American deli named one of the best new restaurants in the country in 2022.

Local tip : Reservations and dressing up aren’t necessary for most restaurants in Kansas City, but it doesn’t hurt to book in advance for higher-end places, if you have your heart set on somewhere specific or want to eat at a certain time.

4. Feel the soul of Black Kansas City at 18th and Vine

The historic Black district of 18th and Vine, southeast of downtown and centered on the intersection in the neighborhood’s name, was a cradle of jazz music and is still a major focal point of Black culture in KC. Learn about musicians – including Kansas City native Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker – instruments and styles at the American Jazz Museum , which also has an after-hours jazz club called Blue Room for live performances.

Next door is the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum , which chronicles the history of Black teams, such as the KC Monarchs and New York Black Yankees, that flourished until baseball became fully integrated.

Vine Street Brewing Co , Missouri’s first Black-owned brewery, opened in 2023 and is already a neighborhood staple. Sip a pint of Jazzman, a black lager that’s the brewery’s signature pour, at its premises in a graffitied limestone former public works building.

Local tip: Jazz-loving night owls should head to the Mutual Musicians Foundation on Fridays and Saturdays. When performers wrap up their evening shows elsewhere, they head to Mutual Musicians to jam. Sessions don’t get going until midnight or later, and Mutual Musicians is the only place in the entire state that’s allowed to sell alcohol all night, thanks to a special exemption from the Missouri legislature.

5. Tumble into the magic of children’s literature at The Rabbit h0le

Taking over a 150,000-sq-ft tin can factory, The Rabbit h0le in North Kansas City is a one-of-a-kind spot that’s intriguingly hard to define. Opened in March and dreamt up by two former bookstore owners, the art-filled space celebrates a century of children’s literature, from the 1920s to the modern day, and while the museum is sure to be loved by little ones, adults can enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane. At any age, you feel like you’re truly standing inside a storybook. Calling The Rabbit h0le "immersive", an overused and vague term, doesn’t even begin to cut it. Just visit the Goodnight Moon room for some hard tugs on the heartstrings to understand what we mean.

Like any good artistic endeavor, The Rabbit h0le is still a work in progress. The 1st floor is open, and the 2nd floor is set to be finished by the end of 2024 – plenty of reason to return.

6. Pick your favorites from the collection at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The free-to-visit Nelson-Atkins , Kansas City’s most notable art museum, is a cherished treasure and a must-visit for culture vultures. The globe-trotting collection spans continents, showing off ancient Egyptian coffins, works by European masters (including pieces by Monet and Caravaggio) and Chinese bronzes.

But the most iconic and beloved pieces aren’t in the museum at all – they are outside on the lawn. Four 18ft-tall badminton shuttlecocks playfully plunge into the grass on either side of the museum, which represents the net, and they feature on countless KC souvenirs.

7. Understand the horrors of war at the National WWI Museum

The United States’ congressionally designated national museum of the Great War isn’t in Washington, DC, but in the heart of the country in Kansas City. The National WWI Museum offers a detailed look into the gruesome conflict through evocative exhibits, including tanks, military uniforms, propaganda posters and replica trenches.

Outside, the Liberty Memorial towers nearly 270ft above the lawn, and you can ride an elevator to the top to see the city from on high on the open-air observation deck.

Local tip: The view of Union Station from the courtyard and the top of Liberty Memorial is the most photographed angle of Kansas City. The courtyard is free for all to access – you don’t have to visit the museum. Tickets are required to go to the top of the Liberty Memorial.

8. See the sights of Union Station

Union Station is the focal point of Kansas City, and many major events take place here. Even at quieter times, this historic building from 1914 has lots to see and do. It’s still a working train station ( Amtrak trains leave for St Louis, Chicago and Los Angeles), and its grand Beaux-Arts architecture of huge windows and 95ft-high colorful coffered ceilings is a feast for the eyes. Kids love experimenting and climbing around the exhibits at Science City , and Union Station is also home to a planetarium , a volunteer-run model train gallery and a five-story-tall movie screen .

On the lower level, Union Station hosts a yearly touring exhibition. Opening in May 2024,  Disney100  celebrates the works of Walt Disney, who moved to Kansas City when he was nine years old and took drawing classes on Saturdays at the Kansas City Art Institute.

Local tip: The KC Streetcar has its southern terminus outside Union Station, making it easy to park here and ride the streetcar into downtown and the River Market neighborhood.

interior at the Truman Museum in Kansas City

9. Get to know the only president from Missouri at the Truman Presidential Library

Harry Truman, the 33rd US president, grew up in Independence, a suburb east of Kansas City. Reopened in 2021 after a $29 million update, the Harry S Truman Presidential Library and Museum is a behind-the-scenes look at his life, legacy and the world at large in the 1940s and ‘50s. Exhibits include somber artifacts, such as the safety plug from the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, to more lighthearted items like the famous "The Buck Stops Here!" sign.

Local tip: History lovers can spend a full day in Independence by adding on the Truman Home , where the former president lived from 1919 to 1972, and the National Frontier Trails Museum , which covers the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails that brought settlers through Independence on their way west.

10. Explore Kansas City on foot

Don’t limit your view of Kansas City to what you see through a car window. Get closer to the urban fabric on a guided walking tour with Urban Hikes KC . These walking tours give you a workout while also taking you on a deeper exploration of neighborhoods and backstreets that many travelers don’t visit, such as the Historic Northeast, the ruins of Quindaro (a stop on the Underground Railroad) and downtown Kansas City, Kansas. Some hikes add snack stops for coffee, wine and cheese, so you can tick more KC foodie spots off your list while checking out the city.

KC Wheel -- with a view of the city scape and another carriage

11. Take a spin on the KC Wheel

London has the London Eye, Vegas has the High Roller, and Kansas City has the KC Wheel . The 150ft-high Ferris wheel provides a vantage point like the city hasn’t seen before: a bird’s-eye view of downtown from comfortable climate-controlled cabins, which can fit up to six people and are wheelchair accessible.

The KC Wheel is the main attraction of the new Pennway Point entertainment district , and at its foot is a mini golf course. More fun things to do at Pennway Point are still in the works, including bars, a beer garden, food stalls and the LUMI Neon Museum .

12. Go wild at the Kansas City Zoo

A family-friendly Kansas City attraction for more than 100 years, the Kansas City Zoo encompasses over 200 acres of Swope Park, showing off some 1700 animals from 200 species. In 2023, the zoo added a 650,000-gallon aquarium filled with colorful fish, sharks, eels, a giant Pacific octopus and sea otters. One of the most adorable new residents is Tortellini, an endangered green sea turtle, who was rescued after being injured by a boat in Florida and was deemed unable to be released back into the wild. She has a damaged flipper, and her buoyancy hasn’t quite recovered, so keepers have fitted her with a weighted backpack.

Kansas City is a family-friendly travel destination and has tons of things to do with kids. In addition to the zoo, families should head to Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead to pet farm animals and feed baby goats. Kids also love splashing in the water and climbing around the KC-themed indoor play structures at Wonderscope .

Save this guide and get planning a road trip in the USA

13. Toast the distilleries and cocktails in "Tom’s Town"

Kansas City was anything but dry during Prohibition, and today, bars and distilleries across the metro still pay homage to the man who kept KC’s nightlife alive in the 1920s: political boss Tom Pendergast. In the Crossroads district, Tom's Town Distilling Co pours well-made drinks in a sleek art deco–style bar area overlooking its copper distilling vats. Nearby, Swordfish Tom’s serves some of the best cocktails in KC in a basement boiler room. J Rieger & Co went out of business during Prohibition but was reestablished by the founder Jacob Rieger’s great-great-great-grandson nearly a century later in a former brewery in the industrial East Bottoms. Rieger’s "old fashioned" is top notch, but of course, the menu also has a drink called the Pendergast.

Local tip: To understand the history behind the rise of Tom Pendergast and hear other real-life stories of Midwest mobsters and the KC underworld, sign up for the KC Gangster Tour .

14. Eat and drink above the Kansas River on the Rock Island Bridge

Billing itself as the "world’s first entertainment district on a bridge", the Rock Island Bridge is one of the most creative infrastructure reuse projects in the USA since New York City’s High Line. The 705ft former railway bridge opened in 1905 but has sat abandoned for decades and previously wasn’t publicly accessible. From summer 2024, you’ll be able to stroll 60ft above the Kansas River (also called the Kaw), grabbing drinks from the 50ft long upper-level bar and food from the kitchens below. Walkers, runners and cyclists can use the public crossing to join trails on either side of the river, and docks for kayaks and paddleboards are in the works.

The 24 best things to do in Kansas City

The best things to do in Kansas City showcase a city on the move packed with character, culture, and charm

The Heart of America doesn’t get the attention afforded to larger Midwest cities like Chicago and St. Louis, but the best things to do in Kansas City showcase a town packed with character, culture, and culinary charm. Sports, music, food, and arts take top billing, and the city is filled with gorgeous walks and beautiful fountains. They don’t call it the City of Fountains for no reason.

KC embraced free public transportation in 2020, making it incredibly easy to get around to see the city’s attractions. If you want to punctuate your sightseeing with delicious food  and crisp craft beers , you are on the right track. This is Kansas City, a city of heritage, history, and a whole lot of fun.

Best things to do in Kansas City

1.  nelson-atkins museum of art.

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Known for the giant Shuttlecocks installation out front (go on and take a selfie), The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art houses over 40,000 magnificent works, including centuries-old Japanese art and more contemporary exhibits and mediums such as photography. Another highlight is the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park, which spans 22 acres. Moreover, the Nelson is considered one of the best museums in the country, and admission is free (non-members must reserve free tickets ahead of time).

2.  Boulevard Brewery

Boulevard Brewery

This little craft brewery that could is now one of the largest in the Midwest. Learn about the incredible history of this native-to-Kansas-City company and its brewing process on a 60-minute tour that ends with free beer. Afterward, get a photo in the little RV/photo booth and hit up the gift shop to take home your favorite brews. Be on the lookout for various events like Boulevardia , in which the brewery teams up with a handful of local businesses for a fun block party complete with live entertainment, tasty bites, and, of course, brews.

3.  Union Station Kansas City

Union Station Kansas City

Constructed in 1914, this architectural masterpiece is a sight to behold—Marvel at the Grand Hall’s 95-foot ceiling, three 3,500-pound chandeliers, and the six-foot-wide clock. Home to traveling national exhibits, 3D movies on the Extreme Screen, Science City (an interactive science center), a permanent KC Rail Experience exhibit, and a planetarium, Union Station has something for everyone in the family. Book a boozy brunch at  Harvey’s  if you want to feel like you’re traveling back in time while enjoying a round of mimosas.

4.  Arrowhead Stadium

Arrowhead Stadium

The three-time (and current) Super Bowl champions rule over one of the loudest stadiums in the country. Regardless of your team loyalty, enjoy a beer and brat in the parking lot, and introduce yourself to this long-standing KC football tradition. Tens of thousands of passionate partiers show up hours before kickoff. Will you be among them? If you don’t want to shell out the dough on tickets, the tailgate may be a better—and more affordable—way to take in the city’s various charms while mingling with fun-loving football fans.

5.  Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

While not much can outshine the Nelson-Atkins, just a short walk away—look for the pyramid-shaped building with a four-story spider statue out front—is the (much more intimate) Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. This one-of-a-kind museum (open since 1994) boasts a collection of modern and contemporary works. It also hosts exhibitions, installations, film and video series, lectures, concerts, workshops, and other creative programs. The gorgeous, world-class Café Sebastienne is a great place to stop and nosh while admiring a rotating selection of installations and works. Plus, admission and parking are both free.

6.  City Market

City Market

City Market is also known as River Market, so don’t let the names throw you off. A Kansas City staple since 1857, ubiquitously packed City Market is all about local produce, hipster goods, restaurants and cafés, home accessories, and more. On weekends, there is a popular farmers’ market. City Market hosts many fun-filled events during the summer, like live music and festivals.

7.  Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue

Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que is well worth the hype. While there are three locations (and a private dining and event space), you’ll want to check out the original one on 47th, which used to be a gas station. Yes, there will be a line, but eating here is almost a rite of passage. Order The Z-Man (slow-smoked beef brisket, smoked provolone cheese, topped with two crispy onion rings on a toasted Kaiser roll) with fries and a half rack of ribs to split with a friend. Do not deviate from the plan!

8.  Country Club Plaza

Country Club Plaza

The Plaza is KC’s premier shopping and dining destination. While you can find all sorts of high-end retail establishments, restaurants, and entertainment venues within its sprawling 15 blocks, this isn’t just another outdoor mall. Set aside enough time to fully take this one in, as it starts cooking closer to 11 pm.

17.  Worlds of Fun

This 235-acre entertainment complex features the most considerable amusement and water park in the Midwest—plus, it’s a lot less crowded than Disney or Universal. Spend the morning riding coasters and then cool down at Oceans of Fun (as a bonus, access to the water park is included in the cost of admission). We recommend bouncing between the two parks in the depths of summer, as being drenched on a roller coaster tends to cool you off effectively.

18.  Mutual Musicians Foundation International

Mutual Musicians Foundation International

Local musicians, singers, and spoken word poets come together at the Mutual Musicians Foundation every Friday and Saturday evening—just as they have been doing since 1930. The walls here are covered in Kansas City jazz history, but don’t expect anything fancy; it’s all about the music. Pay the cover and listen to talented players jam all night long.

19.  West 39th Street

Eclectic eats also abound, including  Miami Ice  for frozen treats,  Meshuggah Bagels  for NY-style bagels, and  Q39  for authentic KC BBQ. Lastly, end your night at one of the area’s laid-back bars like  Gilhouly’s Irish Tavern  or  The Hi-Dive Lounge .

20.  Tom's Town Distilling Co.

After, head to the tasting room and restaurant to refuel with elevated pub grub such as deviled eggs and caramelized onion dip. It's hard to go wrong with any of the cocktails offered here. Still, on principle, you should treat yourself to the Tom Pendergast, a bourbon-and-mezcal mixed drink named for one of the city's political bosses in the early 20th century.

The Fountain at Mill Creek Park

With 49 publicly operating fountains, it’s no wonder Kansas City is known as “The City of Fountains.” The greater metropolitan area is home to 200 of them. Ranging from classical and modern to minimalist and ornate, these fountains are in parks, plazas, and shopping areas. Perhaps the most famous is  the Fountain at Mill Creek Park  near Country Club Plaza. Previously known as the J.C. best time to visit kansas city

The 21 Best Kansas City Museums

O ne of my favorite things to do when I visit a new city is to check out the different museums. Living in Kansas City, I have the luxury of visiting just about all of them.

So, I’m here to share my favorite Kansas City museums and the one’s you might not find worth your time. You can explore ancient Egyptian tombs, the history of Jazz, Impressionist masterpieces, the largest collections of historic toys, and more. From major exhibits to neighborhood cultural attractions, there’s a whole world to explore at Kansas City’s renowned museums, galleries, and historic places.

Our city is packed with all sorts of cool spots, from the big-name museums to those quirky little places tucked away in the neighborhoods. No matter what you’re into—be it art, science, history, or architecture—Kansas City has got something for you. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, especially if you play your cards right and hit up the free museum days throughout the year. Trust me, it’s worth taking a day or two to wander through Kansas City’s best museums.

The Absolute Must-Do Museums

If you can see all the Museums on this Kansas City list, do it. But if you’re time is limited, these are my favorites:

  • National WWI Museum and Memorial (for history and war buffs)
  • The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art s (a free museum for art lovers)
  • Arabia Steamboat Museum (my favorite museum in Kansas City)

National WWI Museum and Memorial

Address: 2 Memorial Dr, Kansas City, MO 64108

In the heart of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, just a stone’s throw away from Union Station, you’ll find the National WWI Museum and Memorial of the United States. For anyone with even a sliver of interest in the part the U.S. played in WWI, this place is a goldmine of knowledge and insight.

This was the first museum I visited in Kansas City and one I bring out of town guests to regularly. The museum is amazing, you can take an elevator to the top of the monument and views are incredible of downtown from the top of the monument as well as from the monument base level.

What started as a tribute to local heroes who fought in the war has evolved into the premier museum for WWI in the United States. Since its opening in 1926 as the Liberty Memorial museum, and especially after its designation in 2004 by Congress as America’s official WWI museum, it’s been a beacon for history buffs. Housing the most extensive collection of WWI artifacts globally, with over 300,000 items, it offers an unparalleled look into the Great War.

The museum experience begins with a poignant walk across a glass bridge under which lie 9,000 red poppies, symbolizing the staggering loss of military lives, with each flower representing 1,000 fallen soldiers.

Spread over two floors, the museum doesn’t just showcase relics; it brings history to life with two movie theaters that screen documentaries about the war, alongside a century’s worth of artifacts, documents, photographs, and uniforms.

The galleries themselves are a journey through time, detailing the origins of the conflict, the nations involved, the alliances formed, and the outcomes. It’s an exhaustive guide to the hows, whats, wheres, and whos of WWI.

Dominating the skyline above the museum is the Liberty Memorial National Historic Landmark, a towering 217-foot structure that stands as a solemn reminder of those it honors, positioned majestically in the main courtyard at the museum’s entrance.

To truly appreciate everything the museum has to offer, from its galleries and halls to its movies and outdoor spaces, you’ll want to set aside at least two hours. It’s not just a museum; it’s a journey back in time, offering a profound glimpse into the past and a space to reflect on the sacrifices made for the future.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Address: 4525 Oak St, Kansas City, MO 64111

One of the city’s most well-known cultural buildings—thanks to the iconic shuttlecocks on the front and back lawns—the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is just as impressive once you make your way inside.

With almost 40,000 artworks in its permanent collection, you’ll find thousands of paintings, sculptures, photos and drawings displayed throughout a sprawling complex of galleries and halls. If you’re a first-time guest, make a beeline for Vincent Van Gogh’s Restaurant Rispal at Asnières and then head to the Photography galleries in the Bloch Building that display a creative history of the medium from daguerreotypes to 21st-century processes.

Returning visitors can explore the collection of Chinese landscape paintings is one of the finest in the West, and the museum’s holdings of Chinese ceramics and decorative arts are also noteworthy.

Make sure to spend some time walking the grounds and exploring the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park that surrounds the museum.

There’s arguably too much art at this institution—at least, too much for one day—but we’re not complaining.

General admission to the Nelson-Atkins museum and most galleries is completely free. Admission to featured exhibitions requires an additional ticket purchase.

Plan for at least two hours to see a good portion of the museum galleries, halls, and outdoor spaces.

Fun Fact: The museum was named in honor of William Rockhill Nelson , cofounder and editor of the Kansas City Evening Star, and Mary McAfee Atkins , a local teacher.

Arabia Steamboat Museum

Address: 400 Grand Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64106

If you’re on the hunt for a museum experience in Kansas City that’s anything but ordinary, you’ve got to check out the Steamboat Arabia Museum, nestled in the vibrant City Market area. This is my favorite museum in Kansas City and one I have brought all my out of town guests to experience. So, at this point, I’ve been here at least 6 times.

This place is an absolute treasure trove, housing an astonishing array of items rescued from the Steamboat Arabia. Back in 1856, this steamboat met its fate in the Missouri River, sinking with 200 tons of supplies destined for pioneers on the Western frontier.

Strolling through the museum, you get to dive deep into the stories of early American pioneers—people who depended on steamboats like the Arabia for their survival and livelihood. The museum does an incredible job of bringing this slice of history to life. With short films and hands-on exhibits, you’re not just learning about the past; you’re stepping into it.

The Steamboat Arabia Museum offers a unique window into the life and times of the American frontier, making it an unforgettable stop for families and history enthusiasts visiting Kansas City.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Address: 1616 E 18th St, Kansas City, MO 64108

Nestled in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) stands as the only institution dedicated to preserving and honoring the rich history of African-American baseball and its significant role in the social progress of the United States.

In July 2006, the NLBM was honored with National Designation by the United States Congress, a testament to its significance as “America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.” This designation underscores the museum’s role not just in preserving history, but in highlighting the contributions of African-American athletes to the nation’s cultural and social fabric.

Visitors to the NLBM embark on a self-guided journey through the annals of history. The exhibit is richly detailed with text panels, an extensive collection of photographs, artifacts, and several film exhibits. These elements are woven into a comprehensive timeline that chronicles both the evolution of baseball and the pivotal role of African Americans within this narrative.

While the length of the tour can vary according to interest, it’s recommended to allot at least an hour to truly immerse oneself in the exhibit and fully appreciate the depth of the stories and achievements it celebrates.

American Jazz Museum

Located in the historic 18th and Vine district, and sharing its home with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the American Jazz Museum serves as a home for the preservation of American jazz music. This museum celebrates the legacies of jazz legends such as Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald through a collection of engaging exhibits. Some of my favorite exhibits were Duke Ellington’s original sheet music, one of Ella Fitzgerald’s iconic dresses, and Louis Armstrong’s trumpet alongside his personal lip balm.

The layout of the museum is thoughtfully done, creating an immersive atmosphere that echoes Kansas City’s deep ties to the jazz movement in America. It offers a journey through the history of the 18th and Vine area and its pivotal role in the KC jazz scene. Interactive exhibits provide a hands-on experience, inviting visitors to piece together jazz tunes, instrument by instrument. Given its small size, allowing for around an hour should suffice to see and experience it all.

Adjacent to the museum, the Blue Note Jazz Club enriches the experience with live music offerings. With an array of free events like Monday Night Jam Sessions, Jazz @ Noon on the first and second Thursdays, and the Indigo Hour every Friday, the club brings the museum’s stories to life. Additionally, regular jam sessions on Friday and Saturday nights ensure that the spirit of jazz is always in the air, making it a perfect complement to the museum visit.

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

Address: 4420 Warwick Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64111

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is Missouri’s first and largest contemporary museum. It’s also one of several free museums in Kansas City. The museum is one level with just a permanent collection as well as a few exhibit spaces that change on a regular basis.

One of the highlights beyond the exhibit spaces is the cafe with it’s eclectic art and nice outdoor space. Plan for 30-60 minutes to see everything.

National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

5235 Oak St. Kansas City, MO 64112

Located on the UMKC campus, the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures houses an impressive collection that appeals to both toy enthusiasts and miniature aficionados alike. As the world’s largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the nation’s largest collections of historic toys, it offers a treasure trove of nostalgia.

This museum is located down the street from me and within walking distance, so it’s one I love to bring my friends and family to when they visit Kansas City. The lower level is devoted to miniatures and doll houses. The upper level has an additional display of doll houses with miniatures but is mostly focused on toys.

Visitors can explore diverse exhibits showcasing the craftsmanship behind these cherished items. Engaging videos and displays offer insight into the artistry behind miniature making. The museum’s origin story adds an intriguing layer, stemming from the personal collections of the Hall (of Hallmark) daughters, which eventually led to the establishment of this remarkable institution.

For those with a penchant for collecting or an appreciation for the intricacies of miniatures, this museum is a must-visit. The dollhouses upstairs evoke fond memories, while the bottom floor’s array of miniatures captivates with its diversity and craftsmanship. To top it off, the gift shop offers a nice selection of items to take home, ensuring a memorable visit from start to finish.

Wornall Museum

Address: 6115 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64113

Another Kansas City museum located walking distance for me is the Wornall Museum. The house was built in 1858 for John Bristow Wornall, his wife and two sons.

In 1863 the family has to abandon the house because of Civil War Order No. 11. The house then became a field hospital during the Battle of Westport (that happened just a few miles from the home) during October of 1864 involving 22,000 Union soldiers and 8,500 Confederate soldiers.

The family doesn’t move back to their home until 1874.

This museum has a fascinating history that includes the life of a wealthy merchant and farmer, slavery and the Civil War. Today the house is one of four surviving pre-Civil War homes (Antebellum homes) in Kansas City.

Fun Fact: John Wornall paid $2,500 in 1843 for 500 acres. Most the land has been sold, but the house stands on that original acreage.

Alexander Majors House Museum

The Alexander Majors House in Kansas City, Missouri, is more than just an old building. Built in 1856 for Alexander Majors and his family, this house was a busy spot. It wasn’t just a place where they lived; it was also the headquarters for Majors’ freighting company, which was a big deal back then for moving goods across the country. What’s cool is that the house was built facing west, which means Majors could literally look out towards the future – the vast Kansas Territory that lay beyond.

This house has a bit of a unique story because of its location too. It was right next to a dirt road that led from Westport Landing straight to the Santa Fe Trail. That dirt road is now State Line Road, which marks the border between Kansas and Missouri. So, in a way, the Majors House has seen the evolution of this area from a dusty trail to a modern-day boundary.

Now, the place is on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it’s recognized as a significant piece of American history. It’s a reminder of those early days of expansion and entrepreneurship, and it’s pretty fascinating to think about how this house and the people in it were part of the bigger story of how the West was developed.

Thomas Hart Benton Home & Studio State Historic Site

Address: 3616 Belleview Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111

Visiting the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site is like stepping right into the daily life of one of Missouri’s most famous artists of the 20th century. Benton, known for his vivid portrayals of American life and culture, lived and worked in this home, leaving behind a space that feels like he just stepped out for a moment. The studio, originally a carriage house, is exactly how he left it, with his paintbrushes still in coffee cans, paints all around, and an unfinished canvas waiting for his return. It’s a place frozen in time, especially poignant because Benton passed away right there in 1975.

Beyond the walls of his home and studio, Benton’s legacy is immense. His art, especially the series “A Social History of the State of Missouri” displayed in the Missouri Capitol, showcases his unique talent in capturing the essence of American life. Born in Neosho, Missouri, in 1889, Benton’s roots ran deep in the state, not just through his family’s historical significance but through his contributions to art and culture, making the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio a must-visit to truly understand this iconic figure’s life and work.

Harris-Kearney House

Address: 4000 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City, MO 64111

Nestled in the historic Westport neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, the 1855 Harris-Kearney House stands as a testament to the city’s rich heritage. This Greek Revival mansion, boasting the distinction of being the oldest brick residence in Kansas City, was originally the home of Col. John ‘Jack’ Harris and his wife Henrietta. Constructed in 1855, the house was relocated to its present address at 4000 Baltimore in 1922, preserving its historical significance for future generations to appreciate.

Designated as a National Historic Landmark on October 18, 1972, the Harris-Kearney House Museum offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and immerse themselves in the ambiance of the past. The house is open to the public for guided tours and private viewings.

The Money Museum

Address: 1 Memorial Dr, Kansas City, MO 64198

When exploring museums in Kansas City, don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Offering both walk-in and guided tours, this museum provides a fascinating look into the world of finance and economics.

Partnering with the Denver Mint, the museum features an exhibit showcasing shredded money and coinage from various countries. Visitors can witness firsthand the process of currency processing and handle a real gold bar. When I visited, my goal was to see the historic Harry S. Truman coin collection for an article I was writing about all the Truman attractions in Missouri . I imagine, the interactive displays make learning about the U.S. economy fun for all ages.

Operating hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 4 PM, with the exception of bank holidays. It’s a must-visit destination for those interested in economics and monetary history during your time exploring Kansas City’s museums.

In the In the Northeast corner of Grand Hall you’ll find a gallery that features and celebrates art, artifacts and stories of the twelve railroads that joined together in 1906 (forming Kansas City Terminal Railway) to build Union Station.

Address: 10 Richards Rd #110, Kansas City, MO 64116

The TWA Museum is hands-down the coolest aviation spot in Kansas City. It’s set up in the old TWA headquarters, and you get to tour it with volunteers who used to work there, showing you around all the cool exhibits and planes.

This place should definitely be on your KC top ten list. It’s packed with awesome stuff, from actual planes to old flight simulators and detailed models. Seriously, it’s a hidden gem that needs more shoutouts and support.

Fun fact: e Howard Hughes owned the airline, and legends Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart flew for them!
