David Bowie 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour

David Bowie on stage during the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour Tour by David Bowie Associated album Let’s Dance Start date 18 May 1983 End date 8 December 1983 Legs 8 Shows 96

The David Bowie Serious Moonlight Tour was thus far Bowie’s longest, largest and most successful concert tour. The tour opened at the Vorst Forest Nationaal, Brussels, on 18 May 1983 and ended in the Hong Kong Coliseum on 8 December 1983; 16 countries visited, 96 performances, and over 2.6M tickets sold. The tour garnered mostly favorable reviews from the press.

Tour development Bowie himself had a hand in the set design for the tour, which included giant columns (affectionately referred to as “condoms”) as well as a large moon and a giant hand. Some of the musicians from his 1978 tour were re-hired for this tour, including Carlos Alomar, who was the band leader for the tour. Earl Slick was drafted as guitarist a few days before the commencement of the tour due to problems with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s management demanding a contract renegotiation. The band rehearsed for the tour in Dallas, Texas. Each band member wore a costume which was designed “down to the smallest detail.” Two sets of each person’s costumes were made and worn on alternate nights, and everyone got to keep one set at the conclusion of the tour as a souvenir. One song that was on the rehearsal’s song list that never actually got to the rehearsal stage was “Across the Universe,” which Bowie had covered in 1975 on his Young Americans album.

Tour performances Earl Slick November 1983 during the Serious Moonlight Tour On 30 June 1983 the performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London was a charity show for the Brixton Neighbourhood Community Association in the presence of Princess Michael of Kent. The 13 July 1983 Montreal Forum performance was recorded and broadcast on American FM Radio and other radio stations worldwide. The concert on 12 September in Vancouver was recorded for the concert video Serious Moonlight, that was released in 1984 and on DVD in 2006. At the Canadian National Exhibition Stadium – Toronto, ON performance on 4 September 1983, Bowie introduced onstage special guest, Mick Ronson, who borrowed Earl Slick’s guitar and performed “The Jean Genie” with Bowie and band. Mick had only been asked to play the day before, and he later recalled: I was playing Slick’s guitar … I had heard Slick play solos all night so I decided not to play solos and I just went out and thrashed the guitar. I really thrashed the guitar, I was waving the guitar above my head and all sorts of things. It was funny afterwards because David said, ‘You should have seen [Earl Slick’s] face…’ meaning he looked petrified. I had his prize guitar and I was swinging it around my head and Slick’s going ‘Waaaa… watch my guitar’, you know. I was banging into it and it was going round my head. Poor Slick. I mean, I didn’t know it was his special guitar, I just thought it was a guitar, a lump of wood with six strings. The last show of the tour (8 December 1983) was the third anniversary of John Lennon’s death, whom both Bowie and Earl Slick had worked with in the studio previously. Slick suggested to Bowie a few days prior to the show that they play “Across the Universe” as a tribute, but Bowie said, “Well if we’re going to do it, we might as well do “Imagine.”” They rehearsed the song a couple of times on 5 December (in Bangkok) and then performed the song on the final night of the tour as a tribute to their friend.

Tour legacy The tour was a high point of commercial success for Bowie, who found his new popularity perplexing. Bowie would later remark that with the success of Let’s Dance and the Serious Moonlight Tour, he had lost track of who his fans were or what they wanted.[5] One critic would later call this tour his “most accessible” because “it had few props and one costume change, from peach suit to blue.” Bowie later specifically tried to avoid repeating the formula for success from his Serious Moonlight Tour with his 1987 Glass Spider Tour.

To this day this was the best concert I’ve ever been to. David always loved playing in Philadelphia and that’s where I seen him. I’ve been to well over a 100 concerts over 45 years . No one has the stage presence of David Bowie.

A memorable concert in Munich

I was at the Washington DC Event in August 1983. Six of my friends went in tux’s and a limo. I remember they kick a 14 foot inflated world ball into the crowd and it made its way around the whole stadium.

Great memories!!!

I remember i couldn’t get a ticket for England, so got a ticket for the 25th of june in Rotherdam, fond memories had to take a train to London, then coach to Rotterdam, stayed in nice hotel, brilliant time.

I saw the September 5 concert in Buffalo. It was a thrill to see him and a great spectacle. He came out as the Thin White Duke at one point–very theatrical. I wish I could remember who opened that show.

Was at the Sept 9 gig and was looking for the opening band’s lineup, I know the Go Go’s and Madness opened but my memory fails the rest, I will say a guy was hit and killed by a train of all thing’s on his way to the concert, kinda sad. But, what was worse was the radio station KROQ in Los Angeles played Ozzy’s Crazy Train all the next day because of it…and they didn’t play rock and roll..good times ✌🧡

Tracklisting

Recorded in Vancouver during David Bowie’s 1983 world tour, Serious Moonlight (Live ’83) was released as part of the Loving The Alien (1983–1988) box set in 2018.

Bowie’s concert at Vancouver’s 11,000-seater Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum took place on 12 September 1983 . The show was recorded and filmed, with David Mallet directing the latter.

The film of the event was released on VHS and laserdisc in 1984. It included the majority of the concert, although ‘Red Sails’ , ‘Star’ , ‘Stay’ , ‘The Jean Genie’ , and ‘Modern Love’ were omitted due to time constraints.

A remastered DVD version came out in 2006, with new 5.1 and DTS audio remixes by EMI’s Peter Mew.

A digital EP featuring four audio tracks from the show was released in February 2006, and included ‘Space Oddity’ , ‘China Girl’ , ‘Breaking Glass’ , and ‘Young Americans’ .

The full live album was released on 12 October 2018 in the Loving The Alien (1983–1988) box set, and on 15 February 2019 as a standalone release.

The majority of the tracks were mixed by Bob Clearmountain, although Nile Rodgers and Jason Corsaro mixed the closing ‘Modern Love’ , which was recorded at the Forum in Montreal on 13 July 1983. The live recording had previously been released as the b-side of the ‘Modern Love’ single.

I am a huge Bowie fan and I always thought it was so cool that this album was recorded at the Pacific Coliseum! The arena is only a few blocks from where I currently live.

This is my Bowie album. I was part of the Perth effort. Seriously, one of the greatest concerts I had ever been involved in. And the afterparty was… well ya had to be there. This is sublime musicianship from some of the best rent-a-sounds ever. Think I’ve still got the t-shirt and tape somewhere signed by the Thin White Duke himself. The Edgley Entertainment Centre came alive… so did a 21 year old.

David Bowie's 1983 shows in Milton Keynes remembered

  • Published 1 July 2023

David Bowie and crowd

Forty years ago this weekend tens of thousands of fans gathered to watch David Bowie play three nights at a converted clay pit in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Fans who witnessed the gigs, from front and back of stage, spoke to the BBC about their memories.

They came in their thousands from all across the country - with extra train services and coaches laid on to deal with the demand.

More than 150,000 descended on the National Bowl in Milton Keynes that sweltering weekend in July 1983, on a tour that saw Bowie play his first live gigs in England in five years.

I was among them. My journey, aged 15 and accompanied by a school friend, was on a coach from Cornwall. I didn't know it then, but we were about to witness the artist's transformation to a new level of global superstar.

Alongside the die-hard Bowie fans, ska and reggae lovers had turned out to see support act The Beat, joining new romantics, punks and even a contingency of Hell's Angels, from memory. Bowie's new persona seemed to appeal to everyone, and it felt like half the country was there.

The three dates, from 1 to 3 July, had been added to the end of the European leg of his Serious Moonlight tour, due to massive demand for tickets following the success of the Let's Dance album and its hit singles, including the title track.

The nine-month tour had "snowballed", said official photographer Denis O'Regan, eventually featuring 99 dates in over 60 cities across the globe, including a series of massive open-air concerts.

Denis O'Regan and David Bowie

The photographer said he had been inspired to work with Bowie after seeing him a decade earlier at the famous Hammersmith Odeon concert, the night before Bowie retired his Ziggy Stardust incarnation.

"That gig really changed my whole life," he said.

"I decided I wanted to go on tour with David Bowie, I also wanted to tour with the Rolling Stones, because they were the biggest band and I wanted to tour with Queen, because they were great, and I ended up touring with them all.

"I approached David with a business plan to produce a book of the tour, which he really liked."

An early assumption the artist would keep him at arms length, being protective of his image, turned out to be the opposite, he explained.

"He was a very, very warm person and wanted to engage really easily with what I was doing, wanting me to cover every moment."

His photographs document the transformation of the artist "from the inside", he said, "it was an amazing time to be with him."

David Bowie

As the tour progressed the photographer said he had to come up with different ways of shooting the star "to hold David's interest".

"If it was a shot of the live performance, it had to be very special," he said.

"At Milton Keynes, instead of the audience disappearing over the horizon they rise up in front of you, and that's what gave it that epic look."

The resulting images were featured in US magazines Newsweek and Time "and of course gave this impression of David being an enormous star playing to huge crowds so that really had quite an effect," he said.

"The rest of the world, especially America where David wasn't so big, saw this all happening and suddenly they wanted him, because they were booking into stadiums as well, so the tour took on a different level of magnitude and became a huge thing."

David Bowie

An 18-year-old Chris Wilson had driven from Norfolk with friends for the first of the three dates, the day after finishing his A level exams.

"The day is still singed on my memory; we had pictures of Bowie stuck in the windows in the back of the car; that's how excited we were," he said.

"My god, he was on form and just looked amazing. He was shining and golden, the staging was magical.

"I just remember it being utterly euphoric because we'd waited so long to see him.

"His genius was, even in a massive crowd like that, you felt like he was singing to you, he was looking at you."

David Bowie

A Manchester University student at the time, Dr Joan Keating said she had gone to the gig with friends as a birthday treat.

"I made a strapless dress out of yellow broderie anglaise and wore it with elbow length white lace gloves," she said.

"I remember that Bowie was very far away from the section that we were in, but that I felt grown up and glamorous and somehow in exactly the place that I was meant to be as a 20-year-old textiles student.

"I can still 'feel' the music."

David Bowie with Mick Jagger

To a 16-year-old Nick De Marco, attending the gig with school friends from London had felt like a "big expedition".

"There were so many tens of thousands of people ahead of us, and all being young kids we didn't really think of getting to the front, but it was all very exciting," he said.

"But it is incredible when you do see the pictures of the enormity of that gig, and you just think, god, I was in there somewhere."

Like many of us he also remembered the slow train journey back to London, arriving at Euston in the early hours.

"There was no way we could get home, so we all just slept on the concourse, it was full of hundreds of people doing the same thing," said Mr De Marco, who is now a lawyer.

"It was like there had been an earthquake or something."

A 15-year-old Sam Rosser had travelled from Staffordshire for the gig, and said she felt "slightly hysterical" at times.

"I will never, ever forget that day, ever. I feel so lucky to have had that experience. I miss him so much."

David Bowie

Dave Willis, then 17 years old and living in Woking in Surrey, describes phoning in sick to his employers in order to go to the concert with a colleague.

"Being provincial boys, we used to go to civic halls and leisure centres to see bands, so the thought of going to this great big bowl to see Bowie, and The Beat was just great," he said.

"It was so hot and of course we hadn't taken anything with us - we just got there and got down the front and then had to stay there, so we just spent all day in the sun with nothing to drink.

"I remember everything just being brilliant; every act was on point, and he came on and just blew everyone away."

Bowie

O'Regan now has a gallery in Hammersmith in west London, where he exhibits and sells limited edition prints and his published photography books, and looks back with great fondness at the time he spent with Bowie.

"On the tour we would have a slide show in my room once I got the pictures developed [as used to happen with rolls of camera film], and I really used to enjoy that," he said.

"I used to love it just me and David, and we often used to go out just me and him.

"It was way beyond what I ever expected. I knew at the time how lucky I was."

Ricochet: David Bowie 1983, Denis O'Regan's deluxe box set including five books, signed and numbered prints, and exclusive vinyl, will soon be available to buy individually in unboxed collections.

As the person who has photographed Bowie more than anyone, O'Regan is also working on a new book detailing his photographs of the artist across a 20-year period.

Introduction

By 1983 David Bowie had, finally, become a world star. His latest album  Let’s Dance was extremely successful and his tour, initially planned for mid-size indoor venues, exploded and moved to outdoor stadiums. In 1984 the tour was released on video (on dvd in 2006)). Last year, on October 12th, the boxset Loving The Alien (1983-1988) was released, of which the audio recordings of the video were a part (and were released on cd/vinyl for the very first time). David Bowie - Serious Moonlight (live '83) - Backcover (bol.com)

David Bowie – Serious Moonlight (live ’83) – Backcover

The  Serious Moonlight Tour , his first tour since his artistical triumph Isolar II five years earlier, was en route from May 18th until December 8th, 1983, consisted of 96 concerts and was seen by over 2.6 million people. It was the longest, largest and most successful tour of his career thus far and was largely very well received by audiences and critics alike.

Initially the concerts were staged in smaller venues with a maximum of 10,000 seats available), but the phenomenal success of Let’s Dance  made the demand for tickets explode. The tour moved outside to stadiums and sold out everywhere.

The band largely consisted of the same musicians that were part of his previous band(s). The talented and upcoming guitar player Stevie Ray Vaughan was supposed to be part of the band as well, but he and his cocaine habit and his entourage all wanted the same thing: lots and easy access to drugs. Bowie had been clean for a while and didn’t want anything to do with it: Vaughan didn’t join. A pity.

The tour started in Europe and opened in Brussels, Belgium. Next up was North America, Asia, Oceania and it ended in Asia again.

The concert on September 12th in Vancouver was filmed for the video release and has now ended up on the (double) cd release.

David Bowie - Serious Moonlight (live '83) (davidbowie.com)

At the time it struck me as odd, and it still does to this day, that only four songs of the big hit album  Let’s Dance album were part of the setlist. The album was the main reason behind the phenomenal demand for tickets.

The show’s opening is rather remarkable as well, a non commercial single, off the album  Lodger , which, after a beautiful rendition of “Heroes” , is followed by an obscure track off masterpiece Low , of which Breaking Glass is also played, but Sound And Vision isn’t. The setlist is great and is very well performed. Bowie’s voice is strong throughout the entire show and he is audibly having fun playing live and enjoying his success.

The estate of Bowie have found a way of releasing tasteful and fine sounding releases after Bowie’s passing, and this is yet another example. After truly fantastic releases like Live Nassau Coliseum ’76 (2017),  Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles ’74) (2017),  Welcome to the Blackout (Live London ’78) (2018),  Glastonbury 2000 , this time it’s Serious Moonlight (live ’83) . Homage to Bowie and the estate!

Correct, which is also stated in the article. However, the Serious Moonlight album was released in 2019. It contains live recordings of the tour.

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.

  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

If you only have a few days to spend in Moscow, this tour will ensure you make the most of your time in the city. Let the experts navigate you through this complex and occasionally overwhelming capital, giving you plenty of time to soak up the city’s most unmissable attractions.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
