Pga tour 2k21 review: finally, a golf game that’s the best of both worlds.

  • Nick Menta ,

PGA TOUR 2K21 Key Art 1920x1080.jpg

“PGA Tour 2K21" is the deepest golf video game you’ve ever encountered.

That’s the benefit of giving an online community access to a custom course designer.

The rest – the official Tour, course and player licensing that’s been so heavily pushed in the marketing – is kind of just window dressing, albeit really attractive, sorely missed, nice-to-have-back window dressing.

Having spent the better part of the last week toying around with 2K21’s career mode, I can tell you that, judged as a PGA Tour simulation, this title returns golf gamers to the place where EA Sports left them previously. In that sense, we might actually consider it a push.

But if you take what gamers had before as a simulation and combine it with a full-blown course designer, then you have something else entirely. “PGA 2K21" is best judged then as the marriage of two features that had been previously kept separate.

As someone who’s been playing PGA Tour video games since 1999, this was the one thing I always wanted from EA Sports: the ability to create my own courses or to recreate courses that EA simply couldn’t license. Once I got that from HB Studios in “The Golf Club,” I found myself pining for what I had with EA: Tour branding, Tour pros, Tour courses.

This game, finally, has both.

EA’s long-running “Tiger Woods” title came to an end in 2013, and a rebooted offering headlined by Rory McIlroy was abandoned after a single release in 2015. That left gamers in the woods (no pun intended) for three years, after they’d grown accustomed to a yearly Tour release for two decades.

Filling the void was a lesser-known title, “The Golf Club,” from a lesser-known developer, HB Studios. “The Golf Club ” – a game focused on allowing users to create, play and share their own custom-designed golf courses – begat “The Golf Club 2" and what eventually came to be known as “The Golf Club 2019 featuring PGA Tour.”

That was the turning point. And not to disparage it – because I certainly spent enough time playing it – but “The Golf Club 2019 ” is, in retrospect, a (really good) half-step, a bridge to where we are now. The game, developed like its previous iterations by HB but this time published by 2K, was the first to feature Tour branding in three years, since EA’s “McIlroy ” release. It came with seven real-world courses, including TPC Sawgrass and TPC Scottsdale, and served as a starting point.

“ 2K21 " is really the final product, the completed version of “2019.” It’s what gamers hoped to get when the PGA Tour decided to get back into the video game business, and it’s what they have now two years later.

Career mode

As mentioned at the top, the marketing of “2K21 " has focused on its licensing agreements – with the PGA Tour, with tournament sponsors, with a list of pros, with 15 real-world courses, and with equipment and apparel manufacturers. It’s worth running through it. Here’s the real-world stuff in the game:

Courses (and tournaments)

  • Atlantic Beach Country Club
  • Copperhead Course at Innisbrook (Valspar Championship)
  • East Lake Golf Club (Tour Championship)
  • Quail Hollow Club (Wells Fargo Championship)
  • Riviera Country Club (Genesis Invitational)
  • TPC Boston (The Northern Trust)
  • TPC Deere Run (John Deere Classic)
  • TPC Louisiana (Zurich Classic)
  • TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship)
  • TPC San Antonio (Valero Texas Open)
  • TPC Sawgrass (The Players Championship)
  • TPC Scottsdale (Waste Management Phoenix Open)
  • TPC Southwind (WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational)
  • TPC Summerlin (Shriners Hospitals for Children Open)
  • TPC Twin Cities (3M Open)

PGA Tour pros

  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Cameron Champ
  • Bryson DeChambeau
  • Sergio Garcia
  • Billy Horschel
  • Matt Kuchar
  • Kevin Kisner
  • Ian Poulter
  • Justin Thomas
  • Gary Woodland

Equipment and apparel

  • Bridgestone
  • Jack Nicklaus
  • Polo Ralph Lauren
  • Royal and Awesome
  • Tattoo Golf
  • Under Armour

You encounter these elements by working your way through career mode. You play events, you earn in-game currency, you spend that currency on clubs and apparel to spruce up your create-a-golfer. If that sounds a little too familiar, that’s because it is; it is very much a return to the career mode players received from EA Sports.

The advancements are largely rooted in making the golf courses look like they do during Tour events; so you’re getting a digital replica of the stadium built around the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale, just as one example. HB has also made an effort to make your tournament rounds feel a little like a PGA Tour broadcast, as gameplay will occasionally cut to highlights of what other players – like JT or Bryson or Sergio – are doing on the course. This idea works better on paper than in practice, as the cut scenes add little, don’t seem to be influenced by anything you’re actually doing, and take too long to load.

The Tour pros featured in the game also need to feel more like active rivals and competitors than what they are now – also-rans. That you can’t play rounds as the featured pros is also worth mention.

It’s why I’m calling career mode a push; its’s a return to what users had from a Tour title years ago.

That said, it’s wonderful to have back with this level of detail, the courses look terrific, and I’ve been glued to it for a week.

Course designer (Hey, you, read this)

Separately, the course designer remains difficult. There’s a steep learning curve if you want to get good at it, and it’s straight up intimidating at first pass. But there’s a reason it’s complicated. It’s the same designer the HB Studios team uses to create the game.

Here’s the good news, and “Golf Club ” veterans already know this: Even if you’re unwilling to dive into the designer yourself, you get to free ride on the work of others. This is the important part – the part they can’t really advertise.

Are you the guy or girl going, “What? No Augusta? And mostly a just a bunch of TPCs?”

Pay attention.

No, Augusta National, Pine Valley, and Cypress Point are not officially in this game. But did users in TGC 2019 recreate these layouts – tee for tee, green for green, bunker for bunker, down to the very yard, down to the very tree – and upload them to the game’s servers?

Yes. Yes, they did.

You can find all sorts of real-world recreations, from major-championship venues like Merion and Oakmont and Pebble Beach and St. Andrews to even your local muni. It just depends how much time someone had on their hands and what they were motivated to build. If someone created a course in “2019,” they can import into “2K21.”

That’s why this is the deepest golf video game you’ve ever encountered. There’s no limit to what you or anyone else can add to it.

So where does the title go from here? HB Studios producer Shaun West told GolfChannel.com last month that while no official decision has been made on the timing of a future release, he sees the benefits of a two-year development cycle. And just like “PGA Tour 2K21 " built on the foundation laid by “The Golf Club 2019,” it’s his hope that game just keeps getting bigger and more detailed, becoming an even closer PGA Tour simulation.

Of course, we have “2K21 " to enjoy for the next couple years. There are users doing the Lord’s Work with the course designer, and there are online societies that organize their own tournaments and seasons. If you’re new to the series, welcome to the rabbit hole.

PGA Tour 2K21 is available on Playstation 4, XBOX One and XBOX One X, Windows PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch and Stadia

PGA Tour 2K21 Review: A Golf game for everybody

Swing for the fairway.

PGA Tour 2K21 is a brand new golf simulator new from HB Studios, the developers of The Golf Club game series. After teaming up with 2K to create a brand new franchise, PGA Tour 2K21 aims to bring back the professional look and feel of golf simulators of all, all while giving new players to the world of golf the chance to learn with ease.

While it may be a bit barebones, HB Studios and 2K's partnership is filled with promise for what the future can hold.

PGA Tour 2K21 Xbox Cover

Bottom line: While it may not be incredibly in-depth, PGA Tour 2K21 is a great first attempt for 2K as they get into the golf game, and the future looks incredibly bright.

  • Incredibly user friendly
  • Real-life pros/courses are a huge addition
  • Rivalry system keeps you playing
  • Customizable difficulty
  • Most gear/clothing is locked behind in-game currency
  • Harder difficulties can be very punishing

What you'll love about PGA Tour 2K21

After three successful iterations of games with The Golf Club, HB Studios partnered with 2K Sports to create a brand new franchise, PGA Tour 2K21. The new franchise aims to do something that The Golf Club couldn't do much of, namely bringing in many real-life aspects of professional golf into the game. For quite some time, players have been waiting to get their hands on a golf video game that accurately brings many of the real-life aspects of the sport to the digital world. Thankfully, PGA Tour 2K21 successfully does that, starting with its inclusion of real-life professional golfers.

Similar to other sports games on the market, PGA Tour 2K21 sports a roster featuring some of the best and most popular golfers currently on the PGA Tour. While you, unfortunately, won't find the likes of legendary golfers like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the game, there is a surprisingly big roster, including Justin Thomas, the current top-ranked golfer in the world. All in all, there are 12 pros in the game with their full likeness. Hundreds more that are shown in name while you're out on a course.

Not only does including the professionals bring a level of professionalism to the game, but it also makes everything feel that much more real when you're competing against someone. Instead of being down against random, fictional golfers, you're going neck-and-neck with Justin Thomas or Sergio Garcia, making it much easier to lose yourself into the simulation aspect of the game.

Besides just having their likeness in the game, PGA Tour 2K21 also sports a brand new rivalry system, which allows you to go up against the pros in more ways than one. Once you climb the ranks and make your way into the PGA Tour, you'll be able to create rivalries with other players, which involves beating them in the standings on various courses. Outperforming your rivals will earn you additional rewards, including new gear or in-game currency with which to buy accessories.

Pga Tour 2k21

Alongside their partnership with 2K Sports, PGA Tour 2K21 also sports a feature that nearly every NBA 2K has had for a decade: MyPlayer. Similar to how it operates in the NBA 2K series, you'll be able to craft your own golfer once you boot up PGA Tour 2K21. Everything from height, weight, gender, and more can be tweaked, so the possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to making your desired player. After that, you'll carry your MyPlayer with you across pretty much all of the game's modes, including Career Mode and various multiplayer modes.

Speaking of, PGA Tour 2K21 features a somewhat revamped and improved Career Mode, especially when it comes to where you'll be playing. Your goal in PGA's career mode is pretty simple, tasking you with rising through the ranks of the golf world until you've dominated the PGA Tour and its many championships. As you make your way through the mode, you'll be able to play across 15 different, officially licensed courses and tournaments, with two more coming post-launch. Alongside the new courses, PGA Tour 2K21 also allows you to unlock various Sponsors along the way, with real-life brands like Adidas and others available to offer you clothing and gear options should you meet specific criteria. While it isn't the most in-depth career mode a sports game has ever had, it's excellent at incorporating many of the new features 2K has brought into the game and serves as a great look at what can come in the future.

Making a golf game for everybody

Pga Screenshot

Early on in the PGA Tour 2K21 cycle, one of HB Studios' biggest objectives for the game was to make a professional golf game that would be for everyone. As someone who only has a rudimentary understanding of the sport and all its intricacies, I'd have to say they passed with flying colors in that regard.

One of the biggest things you'll notice when playing through PGA Tour 2K21 is the almost infinite possibilities you have when it comes to difficulty. There are the traditional easy/normal/hard options. Still, you're also able to tweak the difficulty in certain aspects, giving you the chance to keep one setting relatively easy while maybe tuning another up.

The controls for the game are easy enough, with your right analog stick controlling how you swing and the shoulder buttons on top of a controller giving you extra access to more advanced mechanics. You'll also be able to take an overhead look at the course before attempting a shot, and even preview how a putt may look before you take it. Along with the difficulty options comes a huge, handy tutorial once you start the game. If you're a fan and avid player of golf, this might not be necessary, but for someone like me, it was a great addition.

Besides basic information like how to swing, the tutorial also teaches you more about how to read courses, which club might be best for any given shot, and other advanced tactics, like adding different levels of downswing onto a shot to control where it lands better. As you continue to play through the game, you'll find it evident that a ton of work has gone into making the game accessible for fans who may not know much about golf, and the additions clearly paid off.

Pga Tour 2k21

Outside of difficulty options, PGA Tour 2K21 brings back one of The Golf Club's greatest modes and something that fans of any degree will like, in the Course Designer. Using the Course Designer, you'll be able to create an entire golf course using the same tools that the developers at HB Studios used to create the courses in the game, all the way down to the objects and props littered throughout the holes. You can choose which theme, terrain, and layout you'd like, and go to town making the weirdest or most realistic course you can think up.

After creating a course, you'll be able to publish the course online and have your friends or the rest of the PGA Tour 2K21 community try it. Where the Course Designer in previous The Golf Club entries limited players to sticking with a biome theme, PGA Tour 2K21 does away with any restrictions. If you'd like to have alligators littered throughout a desert course, then you're free to do so. It's a surprisingly in-depth and well-made feature, and I found myself spending quite a bit of time going through the various choices available to me while creating a course.

Aside from its Course Designer and Career Mode, PGA Tour 2K21 also has a ton of fun multiplayer modes to keep you playing as well. For a sport like golf, it might sound difficult to create an online mode that gives fans the feeling of taking to a course for some competition, but it's handled well. Local and online multiplayer is available for those who might want to go up against one another, and a handful of more fun game modes - including Alt-Shot, Stroke Play, Skins, and 4-Player Scramble - are available to play as well (no mini-golfing, unfortunately).

Also brought back from The Golf Club franchise is the return of Societies. Online Societies function similar to online leagues, with a group of players joining up for some friendly competition. Players in societies can take each other on in a variety of modes, with up to 50+ event seasons being planned by administrators. PGA Tour 2K21 will also have its own society, with official competitions taking place weekly for players to participate in.

What you might not love about PGA Tour 2K21

Pga Screenshot

For all the good that PGA Tour 2K21 offers, there are still some downsides to the latest entry in the franchise. As a whole, the introduction of many 2K Sports factors has been a huge plus, but its use of VC (virtual currency) is still a big issue. While PGA Tour 2K21 thankfully doesn't feature too many microtransactions or really have any pay-to-win methods, it does lock many items behind VC and earning it can be a bit of a grind as you rank up.

Elsewhere, while the difficulty options in PGA Tour 2K21 are vast and customizable, the game itself can be unforgiving even on the easiest settings. For example, timing is everything when it comes to getting a great shot, and even on the easiest difficulty, the game will punish you for making mistakes. It's not an extremely bad thing overall, but constantly slicing or pulling a ball into the trees is certainly something that may keep a newcomer from returning.

Should you buy PGA Tour 2K21?

Pga Tour 2k21

At the end of the day, PGA Tour 2K21 is a very specific type of game for a very specific type of fan. If you're someone who is a huge golfer or a big fan of golf video games, PGA Tour 2K21 is as close to a must-buy as you'll get this generation. Even if you're someone who may be new to the sport and likes playing golf-centric video games, this is right up your alley.

On the flip side, if you're not big into sports games, or would rather wait for further improvements in the years to come, you may want to skip out on this one. For me, the thrill of conquering course after course was more than enough to keep me coming back, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the sport. With 2K Sports officially on board, I'm also very interested to see what becomes of this franchise, as this was a great stepping stone.

PGA Tour 2K21 retails for $60 and is available on Microsoft Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia.

Aim for the fairway.

Create your own MyPlayer, take them through the ranks of the PGA Tour, and become one of the best golfers in the world.

PGA Tour 2K21 Review

Maybe not a birdie, but definitely not a bogey.

Although I consider myself pretty well versed in sports games, professional golf is definitely a bit of a blind spot. I’ve spent hours with Mario Golf and Everybody’s Golf, but the former Tiger Woods PGA Tour series was never something that interested me. To be fair, the sport itself does not really interest me, despite the nagging of my friends to get involved. However, with the current pandemic upending the entire world of sports, my view has changed slightly. Not enough to get out on a real course, but definitely enough to step into the world of PGA Tour 2K21.

PGA Tour 2K21

Formerly known as The Golf Club, PGA Tour 2K21 takes the mechanics that HB Studios crafted over the years and combines them with the powerful 2K Sports branding. With a hole in the marketplace since EA Sports left town, the timing was perfect for this higher-budgeted effort. From my understanding, the addition of more real-life courses and professional players is the biggest change, as the underlying mechanics haven’t changed that much from the former series.

As someone new to the franchise, I was thankful that the title throws you right into a training tutorial upon booting it up. Not only is it good for understanding the mechanics of the game, but it is also helpful in learning the ins-and-outs of the sport itself. From figuring out which club works best for your position on the course, to what shot type is ideal for getting closest to the hole, I learned more from the tutorial than I ever did previously. Kudos to HB Studios for creating such a robust and helpful tutorial mode.

Even if you are a fan of the sport, though, I imagine the tutorial will be necessary to getting used to the swing system. PGA Tour 2K21 sports an engine that makes sense for the sport, with one analog stick controlling where you are aiming, and the other controlling the swing itself. To begin your swing, you will first jerk the stick back, and once you feel you have the correct amount of power necessary; you will swing it forward to complete the shot. It sounds simple enough, but there are several aspects that need to be kept in mind for each shot. Adjusting for power is always important, as is taking notice of the wind on the course. However, the two biggest parts to focus on are how fast you move the stick forward, and how straight you keep it.

PGA Tour 2K21

With as many meters to watch as there are, it can feel overwhelming at times. Again, the tutorial does a fantastic job of prepping you for action, but it still takes some time to get used to. If you are like me, you will be hooking and slicing a solid portion of your first shots. The more time you spend with the title, though, the more you’ll be able to recognize what constitutes a good shot. Even purchasing new clubs will not necessarily help you get better faster. Clubs all have their different traits, and you could trade in a club with better control for one with further distance, but the margin of error then shrinks exponentially. Like with actual professionals, it takes practice to be perfect.

While it may not be as beefy as older sports franchises, PGA Tour 2K21 does offer a solid batch of modes. The PGA Tour career mode takes you from the amateur circuit to competing for the prestigious FedEx Cup. You can hop online with friends and compete in match types such as Stroke Play or Skins. The online action can even be taken an additional step forward with Online Societies that let you craft your own clubhouse rules. Finally, there’s a course creator for you to design the course of your dreams. The title may not be jam packed with content, but it will keep fans more than busy throughout the season.

The PGA Tour career is where I have spent most of my time with the game. As mentioned, it takes you through the beginning stages of your career and into your professional days. There are no silly storylines to deal with or intrusive cutscenes. Just straight up golf that suits the laid-back nature of the sport. As you make progress on the circuit, you will engage in some small rivalries with the few pros included in the game. There is very little to this system besides just surface-level comparisons, though, so don’t expect to develop a years-long feud with someone.

PGA Tour 2K21

What you will get out of beating a rival, though, are experience points and currency. XP doesn’t affect your golfer’s personal stats as much as it unlocks new options for you. New clothes tend to be the most consistent reward for leveling up, but other clubs will get unlocked over time as well. Or you could just choose to purchase them with the cash you get from completing hole specific challenges or winning events. There are also sponsors that will reward you with brand specific gear if you complete certain challenges. Due to how the gameplay is set-up, you don’t technically need to get involved with any of this, but it is a way for you make a load-out that suits your style of play.

Having suffered through some of the anemic sports game stories of recent years, I’m almost thankful that PGA Tour 2K21 is as quaint as it is. It’s easy enough to get started, and enjoyable enough to kill some hours with. The one thing I do think it lacks is the pageantry that’s associated with the big professional events. Trophy presentations seem like a big deal in real-life, so the lack of a cutscene at the end of a tourney is puzzling. That extra bit of pizzazz would have added a much-appreciated touch to the career mode.

Going online with PGA Tour 2K21 has been enjoyable as well. The variety of match types afforded to you allow for things to be shaken up on a match to match basis. If you are playing with a friend, it’s great to be able move from Skins to Match Play if need be. There are even options in place to speed a match up if you only have a little bit of time to play. Online Societies is one aspect of the online portion that I’m looking forward to exploring as time goes on. There is already an official one set-up, but it will be even better to build one with my friends.

PGA Tour 2K21

The course creator is also another facet of the title I’m eager to spend more time with. I’ve created a fairly basic course, but the tools are available to make something much better. It’s a system that provides plenty of options for wannabe landscapers, and one that doesn’t even need a Master’s degree to understand. I imagine that the online database will populate with some real good courses soon enough, so even if you personally don’t want to do the building, you can at least take advantage of the feature.

Despite the budget upgrade that came with the acquisition, PGA Tour 2K21 is lackluster on the aesthetic front. The golf courses look fine enough, but it’s hard to depict the gorgeous vistas of a real-life course with the same majesty in a videogame. And considering there are only 12 professionals included in the game, character designs are weak as well. Luke Elvy and Rich Breem are a solid commentary duo, but after a few rounds, the same canned lines pop up again and again.

PGA Tour 2K21 had a tough needle to thread, but it feels like HB Studios was able to pull it off. Its intuitive swing system will let novices learn the ins-and-outs of the sport, but still has enough depth to challenge the pros. It feels like a system that has been perfected by a studio that clearly loves the sport. With the main aspect being as great as it is, this makes all the various modes included with it enjoyable to play. It may lack the more spectacular presentation of the other major sports franchises, but I’ll take strong, consistent gameplay over that any day of the week.

PGA Tour 2K21 Buying Guide: Price, Editions, And Where To Buy

PGA Tour 2K21 offers a more authentic PGA Tour experience on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

By Steven Petite on August 24, 2020 at 7:46AM PDT

HB Studios' The Golf Club games have admirably filled the void left by the absence of EA Sport's long-running Tiger Woods series for years now. But it was only when the PGA Tour license was secured for 2018's The Golf Club Featuring PGA Tour --the first in the series to be published by 2K Sports--that real courses began to make their way into the experience. The latest game in the franchise has adopted the standard naming convention of 2K Sports titles and will make better use of the PGA Tour license. PGA Tour 2K21 is out now on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Stadia. It's available to pre-order now in two editions, and you can also still snag a bonus for pre-ordering early.

We awarded the golf sim an 8/10 in our PGA Tour 2K21 review . "PGA Tour 2K21 improves on the mostly stellar foundation of The Golf Club series, offering the most realistic and pure golf experience in a game to date," I wrote. "There are still some minor annoyances that can temporarily take you out of the experience, but it offers a closer approximation of the actual PGA Tour schedule and a relaxing, streamlined approach to MyPlayer. For the most part, PGA Tour 2K21 admirably captures the peculiar magic of the game of golf."

PGA Tour 2K21 includes 15 real courses/tournaments in the race to the FedEx Cup along with a great new MyPlayer progression system. While real PGA Tour stars--such as cover athlete Justin Thomas--are technically in the game, you cannot play as them. Instead, you compete against them throughout the career mode via rivalries and watch cutaways featuring their shots.

Outside of the robust career mode, PGA Tour 2K21 also brings back Online Societies and the popular course designer, so you can create your own designs and compete against the rest of the community. Check out where to pick up the game below. While the pre-order bonuses are no longer available, you can still pick up the Digital Deluxe edition, which comes with some extra goodies.

Purchase PGA Tour 2K21 standard edition | $60

Major championship winner Justin Thomas is the cover athlete

PGA Tour 2K21's standard edition costs $60. It's available in both physical and digital formats on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, while the PC version is digital-only. The physical Switch version won't be available until September 25, but you can still grab a digital Switch copy on day one. And hey, this is the first game in the franchise to be available on Switch, so you can take simulation golf on the go.

Purchase PGA Tour 2K21 Digital Deluxe edition | $70

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.
