Casper designed its Original Pillow with a medium-soft firmness to suit a variety of sleeping styles and positions. Back and side sleepers should find the pillow’s 6-inch loft supportive enough for their heads, necks, and shoulders, though some reviewers noted that there may be exceptions to this since all bodies are different and the pillow only comes in one firmness option and its loft is not adjustable.

When it comes to stomach sleepers, some found the pillow to be too plush for their liking. Most reviewers said it did a good job of balancing softness and support, though some wished it delivered more pressure relief.

The Casper Original Pillow is rectangular with a gusset around the side that helps it keep its shape. This, together with its pillow-in-pillow design, helps to keep the polyester fiber filling in place. The pillow is soft and moldable enough to hug while you sleep.

How Much Does the Casper Original Pillow Cost?

The Casper Original Pillow retails for $65 for a standard-size pillow. A king-size option is available for $85. The company doesn’t offer multiple firmness options for this model. Casper also doesn’t give customers discounts for buying pillows as a pair, which many pillow companies in our rating offer.

However, you will find sets available that bundle sheets and pillows at a discount. You may also find seasonal discounts on Casper’s website that reduce this cost. The Casper Original Pillow costs less than the average price of the pillows in our evaluation, which is about $100.

What Is the Casper Original Pillow Made Of?

The Casper Original Pillow is a pillow within a pillow. The inner core is a removable pillow made of polyester microfiber fill that delivers adaptive support. The outer pillow has a 100% cotton cover and is filled with soft, clump-resistant polyester microfibers that provide cushioning and give the pillow its downlike feel.

Both components are machine-washable. Simply open the zipper, remove the inner pillow, and rezip the padded outer casing before washing and drying the two pillows.

Casper offers a variety of pillow styles with both mid- and low-loft options and a variety of firmness levels. The brand's lineup includes ethically sourced down, memory foam, down-alternative microfiber, and hybrid pillows, as well as the Backrest Pillow, which is a lumbar pillow that’s designed to provide you with support when you’re lounging.

If you think you’ll need more time to figure out whether your new pillow suits you, you may want to consider options with longer evaluation periods.

The Casper Original Pillow is easy to clean and can be put in the washer and dryer . First, the pillow needs to be taken apart. Remove the inner pillow from the outer pillow, and zip the outer pillow closed again. Both of these can then be placed in the washing machine with cool water and gentle soap.

The rinse cycle should be run twice to ensure all the soap is washed out. Then, tumble dry the pillows on a low-temperature setting with dryer balls or tennis balls, which will help prevent the filling from clumping and keep the pillows fluffy.

This Pillow Was Made Specifically For Napping & Yes, It's Comfy AF

If you travel regularly, you know the discomfort of using a neck pillow while driving or flying as a substitute for the real thing. While it's better than nothing, it's not as comfortable as you'd like it to be. And even if you don't travel, you may be tempted to take a quick nap on your train ride home or on lunch break. (I'm a huge proponent of using a lunch break to sleep for 30 minutes instead of eating.) Thankfully, there's been a major upgrade to the travel pillow that might just make it into your nap routine, too: Casper's new Nap Pillow is a mini version of their award-winning full-sized pillow, and it's just as comfortable as the real thing.

According to a press release sent to Bustle, the pillow measures 10.25 by 15 inches, which is slightly bigger than a 15-inch MacBook Pro. For comparison, a standard pillow is 18 x 26 inches. It seems too good to be true, but Casper says it is a "perfect balance of squish and support" and "a tiny version of our original, award-winning pillow." The whole thing almost reads like an April Fool's prank — the press release says the pillow allows you to "take a nap in your office supply closet, at your dentist office, or heck, even during your morning commute next to a Casper subway ad" — but it's officially available for purchase today.

"Since we introduced our original Casper pillow three years ago, we’ve heard from customers that they wish they could take it everywhere they go — and some people did, it just didn’t fit in their backpack or laptop bag," Jeff Chapin, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Casper, tells Bustle. "So we thought, let’s shrink the pillow so you can take it with you." And take it with you, you can: the mini pillow comes with a pillowcase and a drawstring travel bag, so you can easily stash it in your carry-on without worrying about getting chip crumbs all over the part where your face touches it.

The miniature pillow is priced at $35, which is $40 cheaper than a standard Casper pillow , so it's fairly affordable. No, it's not going to be a replacement for your everyday (every night?) pillow since it's so petit. But for frequent travelers, campers, backpackers, or desk-nappers, it really doesn't get better than this. Imagine: you're stuck at the airport overnight because the last flight to Cleveland got canceled (again), but you don't have to ball up your sweatshirt and try to get 10 minutes of sleep on top of it; you have a mini Nap Pillow to support your weary head.

The pillow also comes with a three year warranty, and it's made with microfibers and has a 280-thread count pillowcase. Livestrong reports that back and neck pain after a flight are universally common, with 90 percent of travelers feeling pained after a flight. Because most people experience some sort of discomfort after deplaning, taking steps like stretching your limbs and placing a pillow behind your upper back can help you avoid unnecessary soreness. "Make sure you are sitting as far back in the chair as possible, so that there is no space between your hips and the back of the seat," Amanda Brick, a physical therapist at Professional Physical Therapy , told Bustle.

If you want to nap in public, this is a solid way to do so without making the people around you stare. The Ostrich Pillow is ideal for people who enjoy making a spectacle of themselves, but if you prefer to fade into the background, the Casper Nap Pillow will almost certainly change your nap game.

Casper The Down Pillow

How it feels: Of the four pillows I tested out, the Down pillow definitely had the most classic, fluffy feel. That said, it was the flattest of the four (though it did fluff up a bit a few hours after unboxing) and the least supportive. My head sunk into the center of the pillow, causing the sides to puff up around it.  Best for... people who prefer one soft, lightweight pillow rather than a bunch piled up, back sleepers, or anyone looking to get that luxurious hotel pillow feel at home.  Avoid if... you prefer a firm pillow or if you have allergies. Down fill is made of bird feathers and can trigger allergic reactions. 

Casper The Foam Pillow

How it feels: On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Foam pillow was the heaviest of the four, the second flattest, and the most firm. The pillow's dense foam filling had very little give, molding to the shape of my head without causing the sides of the pillow to puff up. And while my head didn't sink deeply into the pillow, it wasn't super elevated due to the lower loft of this one. Because of the firmness, I also noticed that the pillow fill the space between my neck and shoulders the way a fluffier pillow would. 

Best for... side sleepers or anyone who prefers firm support for their head. 

Avoid if. .. you're looking for something with a classic, pillow-y texture, or if you love bunching your fluffy pillows into different shapes and sizes to suit your mood. 

Casper The Original Pillow

How it feels: Made with a synthetic down alternative, the Original pillow has a similar sink-right-in feel as its down counterpart, but with a puffier look and feel. It provides slightly more support than the down filling, but perfectly captures the soft, cloud-like sensation you'd expect from a traditional pillow. 

Best for... people who often change their sleeping position, and anyone looking for a traditional, snuggled-up feel or a pillow that will last for more than just a few months. 

Avoid if... you're searching for a pillow with extra support.

The Hybrid Pillow

How it feels: Given my personal preference for a fluffier, more traditional feel, I wasn't expecting to love this foam and fiber hybrid. However, the cross between the two materials actually created a perfect mix, in my opinion. The newest of the Casper lineup, this pillow seemed to do it all—it provided the firmness of the Foam pillow, but also the fluffy give of the Original and Down pillows. My head felt cradled by just the right amount of softness and support. If I had to choose a favorite from the four, this one would get my vote.

Best for... side sleepers, back sleepers , and people who like the best of both worlds. 

Avoid if... you truly hate foam. This pillow is definitely softer than the Foam pillow, but it still has some density to it, so if you generally dislike the feeling of memory foam, stick with the Original pillow.

CNET senior video producer and sleep expert JD Christison and I conducted hands-on -- and heads-on -- test of all the travel pillows in this best list, including our honorable mentions at the end. The characteristics we focused on included portability, adjustability, materials or construction, additional features (such as washability) and price . 

We unpacked the travel pillows, discussing our initial thoughts on each one. We then put them to the test by wearing them in the car while traveling on bumpy and windy roads to see if they were able to keep us comfortable and supported. We each took turns testing the pillows by sitting in various positions and wearing them in different ways as the pillow allowed.

JD and I immediately enjoyed the feel and fit of Travelrest's Nest Ultimate Memory Foam, which offers a traditional travel pillow shape and design. Its high-quality memory foam molded nicely around our necks and shoulders, and the microfiber cover is super soft and cozy. It comfortably supported our heads without feeling overbearing.

This pillow's textured backing helps hold it in place, which worked well in our testing. The Travelrest Nest pillow easily squishes down to a quarter of its full size to fit in the small carrying pouch. It's easy to travel with and keep clean in the bag. The cover is completely removable and machine washable, another trait we recommend looking for in a travel pillow.

It has a velcro strap in the front, but this pillow is not as adjustable as some of the other pillows we tested. It's a one-size-fits-all pillow, so it may be a little big for individuals with smaller frames. At $40, this is an average price point for travel pillows of this quality.

Trtl Travel Pillow

Best adjustable travel pillow.

The Trtl Travel Pillow wins as the best adjustable pillow thanks to its unique ergonomic design, which differs from all the other brands we tested. While testing the Trtl pillow during a long car ride, I eventually forgot I was wearing it because it was so comfortable -- which is saying a lot because I'm particular about anything that goes on or around my neck (you'll see me wearing Trtl, but never a turtleneck). My head felt entirely supported without that claustrophobic feeling I've experienced with bulkier travel pillows. 

This is not your typical U-shaped travel pillow. The Trtl has an internal support piece that you place against your neck and jaw on one side, wrap the soft, hypoallergenic fabric like a scarf and secure it with the velcro piece. The velcro is impressively sticky, which I look for to ensure that the product will be long-lasting. The materials are lightweight and thin, folding up small and packing nicely into the waterproof bag. It's also machine washable and fast-drying; all you have to do is remove the plastic insert first.

While JD and I are very different heights, he and I found the pillow adjustable enough to fit comfortably around our necks. However, Trtl also offers the Trtl Pillow Plus , which is height-adjustable with a twist toggle and designed specifically for various heights, from petite to tall. It also offers a cooling travel pillow with more breathable and thermoregulating materials for those who run hot. Retailing for $60, the Trtl Travel Pillows falls on the more expensive side, but we think it's worth it.

AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow

Best affordable travel pillow.

AirComfy's Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow is small but mighty -- and it's even smaller in its carrying bag, complete with a convenient carabiner to clip onto your luggage. It has a unique bowtie shape with an elastic band that allows you to attach it to the headrest on your seat to keep it in place. You can also place it behind your back if you need lumbar support.

At $24, this is one of the most affordable travel pillows we've seen with this level of quality and functionality. The size isn't adjustable, but you can alter the firmness by adding more or less air as you blow it up, which only takes a few breaths to fill up completely. JD and I were surprised by how lightweight yet durable it felt, and we agreed that it seemed like it would hold up for many trips.

It's worth noting that you may be limited in where you can use it. For example, if you're in the middle seat on a flight, you'd only be able to put it behind you with your head upright (you wouldn't be able to rest your head to the side). The soft velvet pillowcase is removable and machine-washable, which is a nice touch.

Travelrest: All-In-One Ultimate Travel Pillow

Best inflatable travel pillow.

The All-In-One Ultimate Travel Pillow by Travelrest was the best inflatable travel pillow we tested. Inflatable pillows have innate travel advantages, such as deflating and packing up super small. They're also great for adjusting the firmness by controlling how much air you put into them.

The Travelrest All-In-One pillow has memory foam inserts, giving it an extra oomph of comfort and support. Since it goes around your body like a sling or messenger bag and rests on a shoulder, you don't even need a seatback to use it. You can comfortably rest your head while sitting in the middle or aisle seats of an airplane without having anything to lean against.

One downside is having to blow it up on the plane while sitting in tight quarters with strangers and moving it around to the opposite shoulder if you want to rest your head the other way. On the plus side, it takes little effort to inflate -- we found that approximately three or four easy puffs will do the trick. Its luxury velour cover is soft and comfortable, removable and machine washable. For $40, we think this is a great value. Travelrest has a similar version without the velvet cover for $10 less.

Ostrichpillow Original Napping Pillow

Best unique travel pillow.

Ostrichpillow's Original Napping Pillow quickly became JD's favorite. This unique pillow may make you look like an alien or a weird bug, but don't fret -- the sleep you get while wearing it is worth any strange looks you might receive in public. This fully encapsulating pillow blocks light and noise, creating a cozy cocoon for your whole head, unlike the other travel pillows we tested.

This pillow can be used to catch some Zzzs anytime and anywhere, not just while traveling. The materials are incredibly soft, and the inside has extra microbead filling -- it's truly the ideal environment for taking a nap. We did notice that it becomes a little warm after a while, so if you're a naturally hot sleeper, this may not be the best pick for you.

Because of its bulkier design, it's not as easily portable as other travel pillows. It's also one-size-fits-all, so it's not adjustable, but with the added hand and armholes at the top, you can comfortably wear this pillow while lying or sitting against any surface, from the airplane seat to napping on the airport floor. Some users even wear the Original Napping Pillow in bed at night to help them fall asleep faster.

Immediately, JD and I could tell it's made with high-quality and durable materials, yet it still feels lightweight. After wearing it for a while, we were impressed by how breathable it is, even with the hood and eyemask fully drawn. You can block out the world entirely without feeling constricted or claustrophobic, which makes it especially ideal for long flights and trips. It's like being inside a mini sensory deprivation tank, making sleeping easier while traveling. The hood is large and spacious enough to wear with over-the-ear headphones.

The neck pillow's design was initially inspired by a neck brace, which Pluto dialed back to make it feel supportive and cushioning. The velcro strap around the neck pillow has a strong stick, and makes the pillow comfortably adjustable.

Pluto thought of everything with the Pod 2.0, and it's obviously been constructed based on feedback from frequent flyers, flight attendants and sleep experts. It rolls up like a burrito and packs small. The outer surfaces are machine washable; all you have to do is remove the foam inside first. The Mattress a Sleep Writer Recommends to Everyone

Welcome to How I Pick My Picks — a kind-of-regular series where we check in with the Strategist staff on the stuff they’re using day to day, the products they’re testing for stories, and the things their friends and family won’t stop asking them about. Consider it a peek into the always-whirring brain of a Strategist writer. Today, we talk to sleep writer Amelia Jerden.

Sometimes I joke that reviewing mattresses and pillows has ruined my ability to sleep just anywhere. My standards used to be so low, but now I know too much to happily rest on a crappy hostel mattress or a cheap Airbnb’s too-flat pillow. Testing these products has also made me realize you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune to sleep comfortably. No doubt certain items, like a mattress, will set you back at least $500 — even if you go ultrabudget. But for most people, I think a good sleep setup is very achievable for a reasonable price — please don’t feel like you have to spend $5,000 to get a nice mattress. One of my favorite sleep products is actually a $20 weighted dinosaur pillow after all.

My family likes to joke that I get to sleep for work, which in a way is kind of true. It’s a fitting job for me, because I am a pretty sleepy person. It’s a blessing and a curse — handy if I want to test how a product works with a quick nap, less so at 3:00 p.m. on a workday (the sleepiest time of day, in my professional opinion). But I have always loved to sleep, so I’m happy to have an excuse to do it in the name of research, especially if that means I might be able to help others sleep better too.

What’s the product that friends and family always ask for your advice on?

Mattresses, for sure. If I tell someone what I do, they almost always ask me what mattress they should buy … or tell me about their back problems . I’m not qualified to give advice on that, since I am a writer and not a medical professional. I even had my chiropractor uncle ask me for a mattress recommendation last Thanksgiving (I advised him toward the Saatva Classic , which I think can be a good match for just about anyone).

Do you have any strongly held opinions that have changed after testing?

The rule of thumb for choosing a pillow as a side sleeper is generally to pick something firm and with a higher loft for neck support. But through testing lots of pillows, I’ve realized that advice is a lot more variable than I originally thought. I’m a back-and-side sleeper and I usually am happiest with a medium firmness and a medium loft (such as my beloved Purple Harmony pillow, which I also named the best pillow for back sleepers ). That’s part of what makes choosing a pillow (or mattress) kind of tricky: Everyone is different, so it’s hard to make one-size-fits-all rules and recommendations.

What’s the least amount of money you should spend on, for example, a mattress?

I think the sweet-spot price range to get good value without spending too much is usually between $1,000 and $1,500 for a queen-size mattress. Some beds I like in that price range include the Leesa Original , the Helix Core line of mattresses (six hybrids ranging in firmness but all the same price), the Avocado Eco Organic , and the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid . But there are good under-$1,000 options out there — especially if you take frequent mattress sales into account. For an under-$1,000 mattress, I’d pick the Zinus Ultra Cooling Green Tea Hybrid or the Nectar Original (which is listed just above $1,000 but is almost always on sale for less).

What are you currently testing and researching?

A lot of pillows! I’m working on a few material-specific stories about pillows , including latex pillows , memory-foam pillows , and down-alternative pillows, so I’ve been switching between different pillows lately. And I’m getting ready to test some super-techy cooling products — perfect timing with the summer heat. I’m also sleeping on a Zinus mattress I’d previously never tried before. It’s too firm for my liking, but my fiancé has reported that he actually quite likes it and thinks it might have reduced his neck pain . As someone who loves a soft mattress, this was tough news for me. Sounds like we’ll have to look for something more medium-firm as a compromise.

What’s the last thing you bought?

This past weekend I picked up two board games at Target that I’ve wanted for awhile — Hues and Cues and Herd Mentality . I love board games of all kinds, but I especially like silly party games. I also impulse-purchased a pink cowboy hat claw clip because I think it’ll be the perfect accessory for an upcoming Chappell Roan show.

What’s the most expensive non-sleep product that you own?

The most expensive thing I’ve bought for myself is probably my pair of AirPods Pro (2nd generation) . I really hate spending money on tech products, so I had resisted buying AirPods for years. But I have to admit, the noise canceling is worth the hype. I did buy them refurbished on Back Market , though, which ended up being a good bit cheaper than the listing price.

If you had to spend $1,000 on sleep stuff at Target what would you buy?

If I were starting from scratch, the first thing I’d buy would be a Casper Element mattress in a queen size for $506. I haven’t tried this exact Casper model, but Casper’s stuff is usually pretty good quality. Then for pillows, I would get these Casper Original pillows . They’re $119 for a two-pack, which is a good deal in my book, and they come highly recommended by my colleague Brenley Goertzen.

That leaves me about $375 for everything else. I’d put $160 toward this Zinus platform bed frame — it’s actually really similar to the one I have, which I think has been discontinued.

Then, for some bedding, I’d pick up these Threshold Tencel sheets for $75 — I like how silky and cool Tencel feels. And I’d finish with something like this Threshold Earthy Vines quilt for $69. That puts me at $929 for a mattress, two pillows, a bed frame, sheets, and a quilt, so with my last $71 I’ll add this Casaluna Chunky Knit blanket in natural . Not too shabby!
