Cabin Air Filter Replacement: 2000 Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.0L V6 Base 3.0L V6

Our research indicates that your vehicle does not have a cabin air filter (also known as a pollen or AC filter). Vehicles without cabin air filters typically have a plastic mesh that prevents leaves and other foreign objects from entering the HVAC system. This mesh is part of the vehicle and does not need to be changed.

2021 Chrysler Voyager Cabin Air Filter Replacement Guide

Why change your air filter.

chrysler grand voyager cabin filter location

  • Cleaner air quality inside the car: The cabin air filter helps to remove pollutants, dust, and other allergens from the air inside the car, which improves the air quality for the passengers.
  • Protecting the engine: A dirty or clogged air filter decreases the airflow to the engine, which may lead to overheating and damages the engine over time.
  • Better engine performance: A clean air filter allows for a sufficient amount of air to reach the engine, which can improve overall performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Improving the air quality outside the car: A clean air filter improves the air quality outside the car by reducing the emissions of pollutants.
  • Prolonging the life of the HVAC system: The cabin air filter also helps to keep the heating and air conditioning system running smoothly, which helps prolong the life of the system.

If you replace your air filter on a regular basis, you can ensure that your Chrysler Voyager engine and HVAC system are running efficiently, and that the air inside and outside the car is clean and healthy.

The correct cabin air filter on a 2021 Chrysler Voyager

chrysler grand voyager cabin filter location

How often should I change my cabin air filter?

Generally, it is recommended to replace the cabin air filter once per year, or every 12,500 miles, whichever comes first. If you drive in a heavily polluted area, or in an area with high levels of dust, pollen, or other allergens, consider changing the filter more frequently. Similarly, if you often drive on dirt or gravel roads, or if you use your 2021 Chrysler Voyager for off-roading, the filter may need to be changed more often.

It’s also important to pay attention to these indicators that the filter needs to be changed, such as:

  • Reduced airflow from the vents
  • Odd smells coming from the vents
  • Increased dust and debris in your car

Changing the cabin air filter on a 2021 Chrysler Voyager

This is a process you should be able to do on your own with some commonplace tools. Of course, consult your owner’s manual, as well as a factory service manual. The video shown below does a good job of outlining the process.

Tips for changing the cabin air filter on a 2021 Chrysler Voyager

Be sure to watch the video above before you attempt to replace the air filter on your 2021 Chrysler Voyager, as well as review your factory service manual. Also, see the tips included below here to help you as you perform this repair.

  • Follow manufacturer’s recommendations: Follow any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer, such as replacing any clips or fasteners, to ensure the proper fit of the new filter.
  • Orient the filter correctly: Make sure the new filter is installed securely, with the arrows on the filter pointing in the direction of the airflow. Incorrect installation can lead to reduced filter performance and potentially damage to your car’s ventilation system.
  • Clean the area around the filter: Before installing the new filter, use a vacuum cleaner or compressed air to clean the area around the filter. This will help prevent debris from obstructing the new filter.

Helpful Tools

You should be able to complete a cabin air filter change with some normal tools you probably already have. However, there are a few tools that are specific to this job that you may not have, and we also want to recommend some commonplace tools that you should absolutely have in your toolbox if you do not already.

  • A can of Compressed Air – use this to clean the area around the filter. This will help ensure that the new filter operates at maximum efficiency.
  • A Vacuum Cleaner / Shop Vac – You can use a handheld vacuum cleaner or shop vac instead of compressed air, but it won’t displace the the debris quite as effectively.
  • Screwdriver – In some cases, you will need a screwdriver to remove the cover that houses the cabin air filter.
  • A Mask – If you have allergies or sensitivities to dust or other allergens, you should wear a mask to protect yourself when removing and replacing the cabin air filter.

Chrysler Grand Voyager dirty cabin air filter symptoms, when to replace

The cabin air filter, also known as the pollen filter or microfilter, is responsible for filtering the air that the passengers breathe in Chrysler Grand Voyager. What happens when this filter becomes too dirty?

Chrysler Grand Voyager

Dirty cabin air filter causes the overall ventilation of the interior to deteriorate resulting in reduced cooling and poor airflow in Chrysler Grand Voyager. It also puts unnecessary strain on the entire AC system which negatively impacts the fuel consumption.

Poor airflow

When the blower motor in Grand Voyager sucks air from the interior or fresh air from the outside (depending on your setting), it first goes through the cabin air filter. This not only protects the blower motor, evaporator, and the heater core from dust and debris, but also improves the quality of air in the interior of the vehicle. When the cabin air filter gets dirty, the blower motor will struggle to push large amount of air though the system and the airflow from the AC vents is reduced.

Reduced cooling

If the air conditioning system in Grand Voyager is not blowing hard enough or has weak airflow due to clogged cabin air filter, it negatively affects the cooling performance as less air gets pushed through the evaporator coil. This also increase the fuel consumption of the vehicle as the AC system has to work much harder to maintain the desired cabin temperature.

Musty smell

If the AC in your Chrysler Grand Voyager smells like a pile of dirty socks, it could be due to unwanted bacteria growth like mold or mildew on the cabin air filter. Inhaling these unpleasant musty odors is not only irritating, breathing the airborne microscopic mold spores can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals; such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, nausea, and skin rash. Dirty AC filter is one of the leading causes of bad smell coming from air vents in Grand Voyager. If the cabin air filter has not been replaced for a long time, it can get clogged and harbor mold growth, especially in humid environment.

When to replace the cabin air filter?

There is no fixed time for replacing the cabin air filter, but most manufacturers recommend a change after 10,000-20,000 miles. If you drive your vehicle in dusty or polluted environment, the filter can get dirty much sooner than manufacturer’s recommendation. Additionally, if you drive your Grand Voyager with AC system set to fresh outside air most of the time, your cabin air filter will get dirty much sooner as compared to air recirculation mode.

Replace the filter at the start of every winter for optimal performance

It is generally recommended to replace the cabin air filter every year at the start of the winter season. Spring and summer seasons are hard on the cabin air filter because of pollen and bugs, and in the fall they can get clogged with leaf debris. This gives you a fresh start for the winter, improves defroster performance, and reduces chances of mold or mildew growth.

Can you clean a dirty cabin air filter?

Instead of changing the cabin air filter in Grand Voyager, it is often recommended to first clean the filter. This can be done, for example, with a vacuum cleaner or a compressed air system, removing at least a large part of the visible dirt particles. Unfortunately, this procedure does not allow you to get into the deeper layers of the filter. Therefore, the filter performance will not increase significantly even after cleaning. As a rule, there is no avoiding a change if the filter is dirty.

Dirty evaporator can cause dirty cabin air filter symptoms

Dirty evaporator can also significantly reduce AC airflow and cooling performance in Grand Voyager, which can sometimes be mistaken for clogged cabin air filter. The cabin air filter captures most of the dirt or other airborne particles, but some particles escape and can get lodged on to the evaporator. Over time, these particles build up on the fins and block the airflow through the evaporator coil, causing poor airflow from AC vents and degraded cooling performance.

If you have replaced the cabin air filter, but the airflow and cooling still hasn’t improved, it could be due to excessive dirt and grime on the evaporator.

chrysler grand voyager cabin filter location

Symptoms of a dirty evaporator

The two most prominent symptoms of a clogged up evaporator in Grand Voyager are: the air flow from the AC vents is choppy and not smooth, and the inside of the vehicle is developing a bad moldy smell.

Clean the evaporator

Cleaning the evaporator in Grand Voyager is not a simple task. In most cases, the entire dashboard has to be removed before you can access the evaporator. Therefore, it is recommended to do this in a workshop.

Whenever there is a problem with the airflow from the vents, AC cooling, or if there is musty smell, you should always start by inspecting the cabin air filter. You don’t necessarily have to visit a workshop to inspect or replace the filter, as it usually requires following just a few simple steps.

Keep Your Car Interior Free from Pollutants with Cabin Air Filters

Cabin air filters keep the air inside your car clean by trapping dirt, pollen, and other pollutants from the road. These filters are typically made of specialized multi-fiber cotton that keeps allergens out of your interior and maintains its clean and breathable air. Additionally, these air filters help maintain proper air circulation by preventing various elements from clogging your HVAC system.

However, these filters can get dirty and clogged over time. Dirt and soot can accumulate in the filters, preventing them from keeping these contaminants out of your car interior. If your air conditioning unit starts to work inefficiently or your interior starts to have a musty odor, it could mean that it’s time to replace your cabin air filter.

Cabin air filters need to be changed every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, depending on the recommendations of your manufacturer. However, drivers who regularly traverse dusty or unpaved roads may need to replace theirs more often as these filters get clogged with dust and road debris quicker under these conditions.

Helpful Information for Cabin Air Filter

What is a cabin air filter.

Auto cabin air filters ensure that the air quality inside your car interior is clean and breathable. These filters prevent pollen, dust, and other contaminants from getting inside your cabin. Cabin air filters clean the air that goes to the HVAC system of your car, catching any pollutants in the process.

Where is the cabin air filter located?

These filters are often found in the ducts that deliver outside air to the HVAC system. Other cars have their cabin filters placed near the base of the windshield in the engine compartment. Other automakers install auto cabin air filters below the dashboard or behind the glove box of the car.

How often should I change cabin air filters?

Car manufacturers and auto air filter brands recommend varying replacement intervals for cabin air filters. Most cabin filters are recommended to be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, depending on how you drive your ride. We suggest checking your vehicle owner’s manual and consulting with a professional to know the proper replacement interval for these filters.

Why should I replace cabin air filters?

Having a clogged car cabin air filter will prevent your HVAC system from getting air. Your windows will fog up easily, while the quality of your interior air will be unpleasant for passengers. A clogged cabin air filter will emit strong odors and increase the load on your ventilation fan, which can damage your HVAC system in the long run.

How do I replace my car’s cabin air filter?

Park your car on a flat, dry surface and check if your parking brake is on. Next, open and remove your glove box. Remove the old auto cabin air filter afterward, then clean the surface around it. Lastly, see how the old filter was installed. Place the new filter in the exact orientation. Make sure that the new assembly is compatible with your ride for proper functionality.

Preview image for a collapsed post.

UPDATE: After reinstalling the motor I compared the fan output with the motor running clockwise (wires reversed) and counterclockwise (original wiring). There seemed to be a bit more air with it running counterclockwise in the original configuration. Original: Also, I found that the HVAC fan motor spins counterclockwise as wired. When I reversed the wires to the motor, so that it spun clockwise, it seemed to put out more air. I need to look at the fan housing to see if there is an advantage to having the fan spin clockwise. The wire to the fan has a connector which is easy to disassemble, so the wires can be reversed again if I find they work better with the original (counterclockwise) spin. I'm also concerned about the wear on the contacts inside the fan motor, which have worn to the original spin. The fan makes a bit more noise when the spin is reversed, and it's possible that having a clockwise spin will cause the fan motor to wear out more quickly. (It's also possible that the life of the motor would be extended, as the wear on the motor contacts might eventually even out.) You have to remove the right lower dash panel to access the fan's wiring connector, but you do not have to remove the fan itself. Taking the fan out requires removing 5 screws from the bottom, with the one at the front right (of the car) being really hard to get at. It also requires removing a couple of brackets, and to get it back in I had to remove a vertical bar in the center of the dash, and loosen the lower metal bar in the dash at the right end.
