You get views of the "greatest hits" of Cologne, including the famous Cologne Cathedral, Old Town, and Rheinauhafen's unique crane houses. The staff are incredibly friendly and hospitable, despite how hectic such cruises can get. And I liked the pace - not too fast and not too slow.

As with most of the options on this list, the tour includes audio commentary of the sights in English and German for those who want to learn more. But frankly, some parts can be inaudible especially when there are noisy people around.

During our 1.5-hour experience, we ordered Kölsch beer (a local specialty) and a slice of cake to soak in the sights with!

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD), the largest operator of day cruises and pleasure boats on the Rhine River ( Rhein ) in Germany, offers many roundtrip panorama cruises in both Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf. However, most Rhine River day trips and excursion cruises on this section of the Rhine are from Bonn to Linz. Cruises between Cologne and Düsseldorf are fairly rare. Similarly, few boats cruise between Koblenz and Linz. Many more cruises are available in the very scenic and romantic Middle Rhine (Loreley) Valley between Koblenz and Rüdesheim / Bingen, which has very good train connections to Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, and Frankfurt.

When is the Rhine River Day-Trip Cruise Season?

Rhine River all-day or shorter pleasure boat cruises are generally available from April (or late March if Easter is early) to the end of October. The high season is from late April to early October when more Rhine cruises are operated.

Winter cruises on the Rhine are rare but sightseeing cruises in Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf are popular during the Christmas market Advent season with special party cruises popular to greet the New Year.

Online ticket reservations are increasingly possible but often surprisingly cumbersome. It is usually easy to buy tickets from ticket kiosks or when boarding boats. Only special event cruises, which are very popular in both Cologne and Düsseldorf, require advance reservations.

Sightseeing Cruises on the Rhine River in Cologne / Köln

Cologne (Köln) has the most picturesque city skyline by far of any Rhine River city. Cologne is a popular departure point for round-trip sightseeing cruises, sometimes also referred to as panorama cruises. Roundtrip sightseeing cruises from Cologne are usually around an hour but longer cruises are also available to include coffee breaks, dancing, lunch, and dinner cruises.

Köln-Düsseldorfer ( KD ) has the most cruises (around six departures each day) but other cruise lines such as Kölntourist also offer roundtrip cruises from Cologne. The differences are minimal but in some cases, special discount fares may give one company a price advance.

Rhine River Day Cruises between Cologne (Köln) / Bonn and Linz / Koblenz

Most Rhine pleasure boat excursion cruises in this region are from Bonn to Linz and back. The landscape here includes the Siebengebirge that are somewhat similar to the steep Loreley Valley further upstream. The cruise also goes past many castles and ruins including the Drachenfels, Rolandsbogen, and the remains of the bridge at Remagen. Boats cruising upstream from Bonn to Linz take two hours while the downstream return is only 85 minutes.

During the high season, there is usually one early morning cruise available from Cologne (Köln) to Linz. However, the three hours required from Cologne to Bonn are certainly not spent on the most scenic parts of the Rhine River. Cruises upstream from Linz to Koblenz are currently very rare.

Very frequent trains between Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Main Station) and Bonn take between 15 and 30 minutes. Two trains per hour connect Linz (Rhein) and Cologne (with stops amongst others in Bonn) in an hour. Show the train (or bus) ticket when buying boat tickets – KD usually gives a 20% discount on the cruise. Cruises between Linz and Koblenz are rare and mostly for repositioning boats or special excursion tours a few times per year. Full Mainz, or even Koblenz, to Cologne day cruises are no longer possible on the standard schedule and timetables. For long cruises, the more sensible choice is by train to Koblenz and then to cruise to Rüdesheim / Bingen (or in the reverse order).

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) has many hour-long sightseeing cruises on the Rhine River from Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf has a decidedly modern skyline and wide curves in the Rhine River make for interesting vistas too. These panorama cruises are easily booked online .

Köln-Düsseldorfer also has occasional day trips from Düsseldorf to Cologne, to medieval Zons, or to Duisburg, the largest inland harbor in Europe. These cruises usually include lunch and time for sightseeing at the destination.

One of the oldest towns in Germany, Andernach was founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls. By medieval times, the town had grown in stature and was trading with places as far away as England and Scandinavia – even having its own mint and coinage. Andernach and the surrounding area is well known for its pumice with production booming since the 1950s. Enjoy a guided walking tour around its picturesque streets and admire the town’s mighty defensive walls, gates and towers, the finest of which is the 56-metre tall Round Tower. There’s time to explore or promenade along the river, gazing at views of the vineyard-covered hillsides. Or you can simply pass time on board in anticipation of more fine dining in the ship’s restaurant this evening.

Rhine Gorge & Rudesheim

There’s a bucket-list treat in store this morning as we cruise through the world-famous Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and area of outstanding natural beauty. As the river twists and turns, encased by sheer valley sides 600 feet high, make sure you’re up on deck to experience these incredible views close up. Ruins of ancient castles teeter on the valley slopes, built by wealthy princes eager to display their power and influence and to extort tolls from passing river traffic. Legends abound here, most famously of the Lorelei - murmuring rock – where enchanting maidens lured unsuspecting sailors to watery graves. Look out for birds of prey floating above as we cruise on passing quaint villages – Saint Goar, Bacharach and Kaub – all famed for their wine production.

Later, arrive in Rüdesheim for a guided walking tour. A tangle of crooked houses, winding cobbled alleys and curious little shops, this pretty town is famous for its wine making. Set amongst vineyard-clad slopes, Riesling is the region’s speciality grape, and you’ll find a wealth of Weinstuben where you can sample the locally produced wines. A delightful marketplace lined with pastel facades and cosy taverns lies at Rüdesheim’s heart, overlooked by Brömserburg Castle. As you wander the maze of streets, don’t miss the impressive Klunkhardshof, one of the town’s finest 15th-century homes with its traditional timber frame and gabled roof.

After dinner back on board, reconvene in the bar for a digestif or perhaps a coffee with a shot of locally produced Asbach brandy. We remain moored in Rüdesheim overnight.

During breakfast arrive in the historic city of Mainz, a colourful ensemble of domes and spires rising above the riverbank. Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers, it’s famed as Germany’s wine capital and the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the movable type printing press. The excellent city museum houses a reconstruction of his workshop and two copies of original Gutenberg Bibles dating from 1455. Dominating Mainz’s skyline is the St. Martin's Cathedral, with its fine Romanesque architecture and another must-see is the spectacular stained-glass windows in Saint Stephen’s Church. On our guided walking tour explore the cobbled streets of the old town, stopping to admire the elegant patrician houses and charming timber-framed buildings.

Cruise towards Miltenberg

Lunch is served on board as we continue our scenic cruise so it’s the perfect opportunity to relax and make the most of the ship’s excellent facilities. Indulge in a treatment in a treatment at the hairdressers or the nail salon, or simply find a comfy seat in the lounge with an afternoon cup of tea and enjoy the views. This morning we arrive in Miltenberg, a beautifully preserved medieval village with a labyrinth of winding alleys and lanes to explore. With our local guide, discover the impressive gatehouse, standing as a proud guardian of the village and the charming marketplace, lined by traditional fachwerk buildings, with their characterful timber frames. Legend has it that the locals were allowed free wood from the surrounding forests, hence the abundance of this architectural style. Admire the square’s trickling fountain, ornately carved from stone and complete with dancing cherubs, and the intricately detailed Gasthaus Zum Riesen, claiming to be Germany’s oldest tavern.

Later as we drift away, we’ll pass under Miltenberg’s red-brick bridge as our Captain skillfully navigates the gentle meandering bends of the Main. This afternoon we’ll arrive in Wertheim, a delightful surprise, off the tourist trail and all the better for its unspoilt ambience. Passing the fishing boats at anchor, admire the little houses opposite, painted in cheery pastel tones. A russet-walled 12th century castle overlooks the old town, surveying the church spires, turrets and patchwork of multicoloured buildings below. Enjoy a late afternoon walking tour, discovering the town’s secrets through the eyes of an expert guide. Look out for the Zobelhaus, a contender for the narrowest house in Germany!

A fascinating contrast to the quintessential villages we’ve encountered, after lunch disembark for a guided tour. Founded in the 10th century as the centre of the kingdom known as Franconia, the Marienberg Fortress overlooks neat rows of grand, pastel-coloured buildings punctuated by the spires and domes of the city’s many churches. The jewel in Würzburg’s illustrious crown is the Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace that whisks you back to a more romantic age. Originally conceived to rival the Palace of Versailles in scale, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and features one of Germany’s most ornate staircases and dozens of interconnecting rooms adorned with frescoes, priceless tapestries, sculptures and paintings. We moor in Würzburg overnight so there’s plenty of time to explore under your own steam too.

Our journey takes us through a folkloric landscape, threaded by a procession of medieval towns, lofty castles and grand palaces. As you soak up the cinematic views, we’ll arrive at the glorious town of Rothenburg, crowning a hill with sensational views over the meandering river below. The quaint old town is cradled within immaculately preserved walls and there’ll be time to explore its pretty, cobbled lanes, lined with tall gables and pointy roofs. Our ship awaits a short drive away in Ochsenfurt and after lunch, spend the afternoon enjoying a guided tour. Wander through the old town, pausing to admire the town hall’s impressive mechanical clock and 13th-century church with its vibrant interior. You’ll be transported back in time as you stroll amongst the romantic, timber-framed houses and ancient ramparts. We return to the ship for dinner where another superb menu awaits and set sail towards Bamberg.

You’ll be transported back in time as you stroll amongst the romantic, timber-framed houses and ancient ramparts before we return to the ship for lunch.

Something different awaits this afternoon as we disembark once again for a drive along the Romantic Road – aptly named to describe this route through some of the most spellbinding scenery in the world. This morning there’s a little more time to explore Boppard, a true hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards. Late morning we set sail once more and during lunch arrive in Andernach. One of the oldest towns in Germany and founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement, Andernach was then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls. By medieval times, the town had grown in stature and was trading with places as far away as England and Scandinavia – even having its own mint and coinage. Andernach and the surrounding area is well known for its pumice with production booming since the 1950s. Enjoy a guided walking tour around its picturesque streets and admire the town’s mighty defensive walls, gates and towers, the finest of which is the 56-metre tall Round Tower. See the impressive, ruined castle with its well-preserved keep, and the majestic cathedral with its four soaring towers, fine interior and unusual wall decorations. Savour a relaxing last morning of cruising as we glide on towards our final destination, Cologne, passing under the Bridge of Remagen.

After lunch, enjoy a guided walking tour of this most majestic of cities. The cathedral’s famous spires tower above the old town’s maze of cobbled streets, where our expert guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life. Explore the vibrant old town, beautifully restored and boasting an abundance of excellent shopping and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer. See the cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete this iconic masterpiece and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained-glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story.

The best sights and destinations on the Rhine

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL

Today, Cologne Cathedral is still one of the most important buildings in the Christian world. The walls of this masterfully designed place of worship give way to large window areas and delicate tracery. The Gero Crucifix on the north side of the ambulatory is one of the oldest remaining large-scale sculptures from the Middle Ages, and the window designed by Gerhard Richter is one of the most recent highlights.

ANTWERP'S VLAEYKENSGANG

Back to the 16th century: The hidden Vlaeykensgang from 1591 connects the Hoogstraat, the Oude Koornmarkt and the Pelgrimstraat, and takes its visitors on a journey into the past. Today, antique shops, art galleries and the exclusive restaurant of Sir Anthony Van Dyck can be found in the historical buildings. However, shoemakers and the poorest people in the city used to live here. Pay a visit to the cobbled alleyway and soak up the medieval atmosphere.

STRASBOURG CATHEDRAL

Indeed, all paths lead to the cathedral in Strasbourg – however, the most spectacular is when you approach the cathedral along the Rue Mercière (Grocer Street). It leads directly to the magnificent west façade, with the 16-petal rose window (14.5 metres in diameter) over the middle porch – the richly decorated main façade of the cathedral – which reflects the architecture of three centuries (1176-1439), from early Romanticism to the late Gothic period. Above the rose window is a 66-metre high platform, with 332 steps leading up to it. It is worth the effort, as you’ll have a wonderful view over the city and its surroundings. 

AMSTERDAM'S CANALS

Amsterdam is a city with an abundance of water. With around 200 canals, moats, locks and other similar bodies of water, this European city welcomes you on a reflective tour of the canals. Lean back and take in the diversity of the capital city whilst the boat floats gently through the canals. The main canals Singel, Herengracht, Keizergracht and Prinsengracht flow through the city centre. You can book canal tours quickly and easily in the city, for example in the central station.

7 things to expect on your first river cruise

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
