6 Best Cologne Rhine River Cruise And Boat Tours

Updated on  September 12, 2023

Are you overwhelmed by all the choices for experiencing the beauty of Cologne's stunning Rhine River? Don't worry, I've been there too and did a lot of research to find out exactly what makes for an exceptional river cruise or boat tour.

In this blog post, I'll share my top options like the Panoramic City Cruise and Top Sights Rhine River Cruise . I'll also share what to consider and what to steer clear of during your river experience, and make the most of your trip!

Our Top 3 Picks: Top Cologne River Cruise and Boat Tours

#1 TOP PICK

Top Sights Rhine River Cruise

  • 1.5 hr "Greatest Hits" of Cologne
  • Informative audio commentary

Panoramic City Cruise

  • 1 hr Iconic Landmarks
  • On-board Bar

Evening Cruise on the Rhine River

  • 2 hr Evening Lights
  • Live DJ music

Top Cologne River Cruise and Boat Tours

1. top sights rhine river cruise.

I've written about the The Top Sights Rhine River Cruise before, and it's by far my favorite.

You get views of the "greatest hits" of Cologne, including the famous Cologne Cathedral, Old Town, and Rheinauhafen's unique crane houses. The staff are incredibly friendly and hospitable, despite how hectic such cruises can get. And I liked the pace - not too fast and not too slow.

As with most of the options on this list, the tour includes audio commentary of the sights in English and German for those who want to learn more. But frankly, some parts can be inaudible especially when there are noisy people around.

During our 1.5-hour experience, we ordered Kölsch beer (a local specialty) and a slice of cake to soak in the sights with!

It's the little details that make this cruise a little more special, and that's why I've ranked it as number one. It's an excellent choice for first-time visitors or seasoned travelers looking to see Cologne from another angle!

  • Gain valuable insights into Cologne's famous sights and history with on - board commentary
  • Indulge in delicious beverages and treats while taking in the stunning views
  • Explore top sights including the iconic Cologne Cathedral, Old Town, crane houses, and 5 Rhine river bridges
  • Cruise along the scenic Rhine River for 1.5 hours
  • Enjoy an informative audio commentary in English and German
  • Limited seating availability on the cruise
  • Potential for crowded conditions during peak tourist season
  • May not be suitable for individuals who are prone to motion sickness

2. Panoramic City Cruise

Coming in close second is this Panoramic City Cruise . What makes it different from my top choice is mainly the shorter length of the cruise (1 hour seems to go by too fast) but you're still able to catch some of the best parts of the Rhine River panorama! So if you're in a time fix, pick this!

From gliding over the Rhine River to capturing breathtaking views of iconic landmarks such as the Cologne Cathedral, it makes for a memorable experience. It's also priced slightly lower, and who doesn't enjoy a saving a little!

One aspect that particularly impressed me was how efficiently organized everything was. The boat crew were very professional, and safety was highly emphasized throughout.

The onboard bar also added a comforting touch, letting you enjoy drinks while taking in stunning views of bridges like South Bridge among others. Although I visited solo on this trip, parents will be glad to know infants up to 3 years old enjoy free entry. Moreover, it's wheelchair-accessible.

It is why we placed it at No. 2 position; it has impressive value, the "Wow" factor and very professional crew!

  • Capture stunning photos of iconic bridges and landmarks along the river
  • Audio commentary via loudspeaker in German and English
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Infants under 3 years old can join for free
  • Dogs are allowed (with additional ticket purchase)
  • Limited seating capacity may result in crowded conditions on the boat
  • May not be suitable for those with motion sickness or a fear of water
  • The onboard bar selection and prices may be limited or expensive

3. 2-Hour Evening Cruise on the Rhine River

If you thought coasting down the Rhine River is a beautiful experience in the day, just wait until you do it in the evening! There's nothing quite like seeing the beautiful city of Cologne illuminated under the evening lights, while gliding smoothly along one of Europe's most historic rivers.

The panoramic views are simply breathtaking, offering sights such as romanesque churches including St. Kunibert and Groß St. Martin, and especially, the massive Cologne Cathedral.

However, the highlight had to be the music. We kicked off the cruise with gentle, calming tunes to help us relax. As the night sky grew darker, the crew switched to lively dance tracks that got everyone pumped and in high spirits. Even the kids were grooving along!

There's ample seating on the cruise, whether it's sitting comfortably below deck or lounging on the spacious open deck (where you can feel the fresh air and wind whipping around you!).

But this cruise is quite popular, with limited evening slots! So when you're planning your next trip to the city of Cologne consider reserving now & you still have the option to pay later.

  • Experience the beauty of Cologne city lit up by enchanting evening lights
  • Enjoy live DJ music for an fun-filled cruise experience
  • See stunning views of majestic churches, bridges, and historic areas of the city
  • On-board food and drinks available for purchase
  • Trusted activity provider with a high rating based on thousands of reviews
  • No commentary about the sights: this might disappoint those who want to know what they're seeing.
  • Depending on the popularity of the cruise, it can get crowded with other tourists, potentially affecting the overall enjoyment of the experience.
  • May not be suitable for those who just want a low-key, relaxing boat ride.

4. Cologne to Königswinter: Siebengebirge Cruise

Taking a cruise to Königswinter from Cologne allows you to kill two birds with one stone.

Not only can you explore the delightful town of Königswinter with its historic castle and natural beauty, but you'll also get to enjoy stunning Rhine River views along the way, gliding past Bonn and the legendary Drachenfels mountain. [ 1 ]

The one-way trip is 4 hours, while the two-way trip takes around 9.5-10 hours and includes about 2 hours in Königswinter.

If you ask me, I reckon you choose the one-way trip, spend more time exploring  Königswinter, and take the train back to Cologne at your leisure.

For animal lovers like me, taking my dog along for a tiny add-on fee made this trip even more special but be sure to get those tickets from the office or directly on board!

  • Experience the beauty of the Siebengebirge from the comfort of a boat cruise
  • Capture stunning views of the legendary Drachenfels and its castle ruins
  • Varied tour options: Choose between the one-way 4-hour cruise or two-way 10-hour cruise, depending on availability.
  • Purchase food and drinks onboard.
  • Pet-friendly experience: Bring your furry friend along by purchasing tickets for dogs onboard.
  • Some guests complain that the two-way option only allows 2 hours in the town, which may not be enough
  • Limited availability of seating on the boat
  • Potential for overcrowding during peak tourist seasons
  • Weather conditions may impact the overall experience

5. Rhine River Cruise with Live Music

If you're into good old tunes, the Rhine River Cruise with Live Music is a real treat. The musician onboard did a great job playing some German favorites, which I think are perfect for the older crowd (compared to the energetic music played at the 2-hour evening cruise).

The live music here gave our trip up and down the Rhine River a nostalgic vibe while we took in the sights from Groß St. Martin Church to Rheinau harbour and finally, the iconic Cologne Cathedral. And sipping on a refreshing glass of Kölsch was the cherry on top.

But be prepared to book in advance, because the tour is quite popular especially during peak travel season. Luckily, there's a free cancellation policy up-to 24 hours before departure!

Honestly, I'd highly recommend this as a great deal and the reviews from the locals say the same. You get a unique view of Cologne's beautiful city while enjoying live music. It's a fantastic experience for your money.

  • Explore the beauty of Cologne while listening to live music performances
  • Convenient meeting point at pier no. 10 near Musical Dome and Goldgasse
  • Decent food and drink options available on board, but don't have high expectations beyong the basic
  • Limited music genres available (only in German)
  • Crowded boat with limited seating
  • Higher price compared to other Rhine River cruises without live music

This Rhine River Cruise with Live Music is an ideal experience for someone who wants to explore the historic and beautiful scenery of Europe's largest river while enjoying live musical performances.

6. Winter Cruise with Live Music (Christmas)

Exploring Christmas in Cologne is truly special, and the Winter Cruise with Live Music is hands down the best way to savor the festive magic!

The boat's cozy decorations and the comforting warmth, especially when it's freezing outside, have a magical way of instantly putting you in the Christmas spirit.

Imagine cruising along the Rhine River as you take in the beautiful sights of Cologne's winter skyline, illuminated by twinkling holiday lights... while a live singer performs Christmas carols in German and English. You'll wish they had this all year round.

To complete the experience, you can order a jug of Glühwein (warm mulled wine) to go with your cruise. And here's the bonus: it wasn't overcrowded at all, so there was plenty of space to enjoy the experience.

I would highly recommend choosing the 4 pm option. This way, you get to witness Cologne's stunning views in the daylight, catch a beautiful sunset, and then bask in the mesmerizing night lights as the trip comes to an end. It was way better than I expected, considering the reasonable price we paid.

  • See Cologne's winter skyline from the comfort of a boat
  • Get in the Christmas spirit with a cup of Glühwein, a traditional holiday drink
  • Sing along to live music performances
  • Top-notch staff
  • Skip the ticket line
  • Onboard food and drink options available
  • Limited slots as it's only available during winter
  • Potential for cold and windy weather during the cruise
  • Not suitable for those who do not enjoy Christmas music or festivities

Top Rhine River Day-Trip Boat Cruises from Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf

Published on March 18, 2024

by Henk Bekker

in Cologne / Köln , Düsseldorf , Germany , N24 , NAdX , Rhine / Rhein River , Rhine River , River Cruises

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) is the best choice for cheap panorama and day-trip cruises on riverboats on the Rhine River ( Rhein ) from Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf in Germany.

Cologne (Köln) is a popular departure point for cruises on the Rhine River (Rhein in Germany) both at night and during the day.

© manfredxy / Depositphotos

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD), the largest operator of day cruises and pleasure boats on the Rhine River ( Rhein ) in Germany, offers many roundtrip panorama cruises in both Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf. However, most Rhine River day trips and excursion cruises on this section of the Rhine are from Bonn to Linz. Cruises between Cologne and Düsseldorf are fairly rare. Similarly, few boats cruise between Koblenz and Linz. Many more cruises are available in the very scenic and romantic Middle Rhine (Loreley) Valley between Koblenz and Rüdesheim / Bingen, which has very good train connections to Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, and Frankfurt.

When is the Rhine River Day-Trip Cruise Season?

Rhine River all-day or shorter pleasure boat cruises are generally available from April (or late March if Easter is early) to the end of October. The high season is from late April to early October when more Rhine cruises are operated.

Winter cruises on the Rhine are rare but sightseeing cruises in Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf are popular during the Christmas market Advent season with special party cruises popular to greet the New Year.

Online ticket reservations are increasingly possible but often surprisingly cumbersome. It is usually easy to buy tickets from ticket kiosks or when boarding boats. Only special event cruises, which are very popular in both Cologne and Düsseldorf, require advance reservations.

Cruise prices are currently around €17 for one-hour panorama cruises and €25 for two-hour cruises. Cologne to Linz is €58 (€64 return) and Bonn to Linz is €24 (€27 return) — returns are almost free. See also special deals on Rhine River cruises for savings tips.

Sightseeing Cruises on the Rhine River in Cologne / Köln

Cologne (Köln) is a popular departure point for cruises on the Rhine River (Rhein in Germany) both at night and during the day.

Cologne (Köln) has the most picturesque city skyline by far of any Rhine River city. Cologne is a popular departure point for round-trip sightseeing cruises, sometimes also referred to as panorama cruises. Roundtrip sightseeing cruises from Cologne are usually around an hour but longer cruises are also available to include coffee breaks, dancing, lunch, and dinner cruises.

Köln-Düsseldorfer ( KD ) has the most cruises (around six departures each day) but other cruise lines such as Kölntourist also offer roundtrip cruises from Cologne. The differences are minimal but in some cases, special discount fares may give one company a price advance.

GetYourGuide

Rhine River Day Cruises between Cologne (Köln) / Bonn and Linz / Koblenz

KD MS Loreley Rhine Boat

Most Rhine pleasure boat excursion cruises in this region are from Bonn to Linz and back. The landscape here includes the Siebengebirge that are somewhat similar to the steep Loreley Valley further upstream. The cruise also goes past many castles and ruins including the Drachenfels, Rolandsbogen, and the remains of the bridge at Remagen. Boats cruising upstream from Bonn to Linz take two hours while the downstream return is only 85 minutes.

During the high season, there is usually one early morning cruise available from Cologne (Köln) to Linz. However, the three hours required from Cologne to Bonn are certainly not spent on the most scenic parts of the Rhine River. Cruises upstream from Linz to Koblenz are currently very rare.

Very frequent trains between Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Main Station) and Bonn take between 15 and 30 minutes. Two trains per hour connect Linz (Rhein) and Cologne (with stops amongst others in Bonn) in an hour. Show the train (or bus) ticket when buying boat tickets – KD usually gives a 20% discount on the cruise. See Deutsche Bahn train schedules online: Cologne to Bonn , Cologne to Linz , Bonn to Linz , and Cologne to Koblenz .

Rhine River Boat Cruising Times between Cologne, Bonn, Linz, and Koblenz

KD RheinFantasie cruises near the Drachenfels

Cruise times according to the standard Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) timetable are as follows:

Town – Left / Right bank – Minutes Upstream (Minutes Downstream)

  • Köln / Cologne – L – 55 (35)
  • Köln-Porz – R – 45 (25)
  • Wesseling – L – 80 (45)
  • Bonn – L – 30 (30)
  • Bad Godesberg – L – 20 (5)
  • Königswinter – R – 20 (15)
  • Bad Honnef – R – 20 (15)
  • Unkel – R – 10 (10)
  • Remagen – L – 30 (10)
  • Linz – R – 30 (30)
  • Bad Breisig – L – 150 (110)

Cruises between Linz and Koblenz are rare and mostly for repositioning boats or special excursion tours a few times per year. Full Mainz, or even Koblenz, to Cologne day cruises are no longer possible on the standard schedule and timetables. For long cruises, the more sensible choice is by train to Koblenz and then to cruise to Rüdesheim / Bingen (or in the reverse order).

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) has many hour-long sightseeing cruises on the Rhine River from Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf has a decidedly modern skyline and wide curves in the Rhine River make for interesting vistas too. These panorama cruises are easily booked online .

Köln-Düsseldorfer also has occasional day trips from Düsseldorf to Cologne, to medieval Zons, or to Duisburg, the largest inland harbor in Europe. These cruises usually include lunch and time for sightseeing at the destination.

Die Weisse Flotte Düsseldorf also offers panorama cruises in Düsseldorf as well as excursion cruises downriver to Kaiserswerth — a pretty small village with a castle ruin near Düsseldorf Airport.

Day Cruises on the Middle Rhine / Loreley Valley

KD is the largest operator of Rhine Boat cruises in Germany with cruises from many cities including Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf.

The most popular section of the Rhine ( Rhein ) River for day trips cruises is the romantic Middle Rhine ( Mittelrhein ) between Rüdesheim / Bingen and Koblenz. The Middle Rhine is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list and includes the Loreley Rock, numerous castles, and romantic villages.

Day cruises generally do not go from Cologne to the Loreley Valley. However, very frequent trains from Cologne (Köln) to Bingen take 90 minutes to 2 hours (transfers may be required in Koblenz). Bingen is on the left bank of the Rhine opposite Rüdesheim and a great place to start a Rhine River day cruise of the Loreley Valley. Trains from Koblenz to Cologne take just less than an hour. Trains also stop in most towns along this stretch of the Rhine for travelers preferring shorter cruises.

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) offers many special savings fares on its day cruises on the Middle Rhine (Loreley Valley) that are also valid on cruises from Bonn and Cologne.

COLOGNE RIVER CRUISES & BOAT TOURS – FINAL THOUGHTS

A Cologne river cruise is a fantastic way to explore the city and its most famous landmarks in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

By taking a leisurely cruise along the Rhine River, travelers can enjoy stunning views of Cologne’s iconic sights, including Cologne Cathedral, the Old Town, and the Hohenzollern Bridge.

While a river cruise may offer importants facts and figures about the city’s sights and picturesque views of the city’s landmarks, it’s important to note that the cruise only covers the areas along the river. It should therefore not be considered a substitute for a sightseeing walking tour.

A walking tour allows visitors to explore Cologne’s hidden gems, learn about its history and culture, and interact with the local community in a more meaningful way.

Therefore, a combination of a river cruise and a walking tour is the ideal way to experience all that Cologne has to offer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

There are different Rhine River cruises available in Cologne, with varying durations ranging from one hour to three hours. So the length of the cruise depends on the specific tour or package you choose. It’s best to check the details of the specific tour or package you’re interested in to find out the exact duration of the Rhine River Cruise.

There are several places where river cruises can dock in Cologne. Some of the most common docking points in Cologne for river cruises include the Cologne Old Town, the Rheinauhafen, the Cologne Cruise Terminal (located at the northern end of the Old Town), and the Deutzer Bridge area. The specific dock location for each cruise may vary depending on factors such as water levels, port availability, and cruise schedule. If you have a specific river cruise in mind, it’s best to check with the cruise company or your travel agent to confirm the exact docking location.

The length of the Rhine River is approximately 1,230 km (760 miles). If you have a specific journey in mind, it’s best to check with the transport company or your travel agent to get a more accurate estimate of the time it will take to travel the Rhine River.

The Rhine River has many scenic parts, but one of the most famous and picturesque sections is the Rhine Gorge. The Rhine Gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe. Your professional, English-speaking crew will welcome you on board, show you to your cabin and help you familiarise yourself with all aspects of this first-class floating boutique hotel before dinner is served.

Route map

After breakfast, disembark for a guided walking tour of this most majestic of cities, Cologne.

The cathedral’s famous spires tower above the old town’s maze of cobbled streets, where our expert guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life. Explore the vibrant old town, beautifully restored and boasting an abundance of excellent shopping and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer. See the cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete this iconic masterpiece and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained-glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story.

After some free time, return to the ship to enjoy lunch and relax on board as our journey truly begins.

Cruise towards Andernach

As we leave Cologne’s imposing skyline behind head up onto the sun deck to enjoy fabulous river views during an afternoon of scenic sailing. Sink into a good book in a comfortable lounge chair, cool off in the splash pool or relax on the terrace area with a refreshing drink. Freshen up in your elegant cabin before reconvening with your fellow cruisers in the bar for an aperitif. During tonight’s dinner we arrive in Andernach.

Included experience:

Guided tour of Cologne.

Cologne, Germany

ANDERNACH & BOPPARD

One of the oldest towns in Germany, Andernach was founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls. By medieval times, the town had grown in stature and was trading with places as far away as England and Scandinavia – even having its own mint and coinage. Andernach and the surrounding area is well known for its pumice with production booming since the 1950s. Enjoy a guided walking tour around its picturesque streets and admire the town’s mighty defensive walls, gates and towers, the finest of which is the 56-metre tall Round Tower. See the impressive, ruined castle with its well-preserved keep, and the majestic cathedral with its four soaring towers, fine interior and unusual wall decorations. At the old harbour area discover the Old Crane, a 16th-century stone-turning tower crane, still in use until 1911 to load millstones, tuff and wine.

Back on board for lunch, take in the glorious river scenery as we set sail for Boppard. Later, discover this hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards.  Also known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’, this famously picturesque town is located on a long, looping bend of the river. The black and white spires of the Church of Saint Severus can be seen from a distance, but as we draw closer its bustling quayside comes into view.

Captivating, cobbled streets, lined by half-timbered houses, tucked-away shops selling traditional goods and characterful restaurants, lead into the town and its main square. Like many riverside settlements in the area, the Romans founded Boppard, and their legacy remains in the superbly preserved town walls, the finest in Germany. There’s time to explore or promenade along the river, gazing at views of the vineyard-covered hillsides. Or you can simply pass time on board in anticipation of more fine dining in the ship’s restaurant this evening.

After dinner enjoy professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras demonstrating perfect mastery of their instruments, showcasing melodies from the most famous European composers with a special focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn - a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.

Our ship remains moored overnight and after dinner there’s the chance to enjoy a special onboard performance by professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras. They will showcase melodies from the most famous European composers, with a particular focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn.

Included experiences:

Guided tour of Andernach, visit to Boppard & classic duo musical performance.

Market square - Andernach, Germany

RHINE GORGE & RÜDESHEIM

Rhine Gorge & Rudesheim

There’s a bucket-list treat in store this morning as we cruise through the world-famous Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and area of outstanding natural beauty. As the river twists and turns, encased by sheer valley sides 600 feet high, make sure you’re up on deck to experience these incredible views close up. Ruins of ancient castles teeter on the valley slopes, built by wealthy princes eager to display their power and influence and to extort tolls from passing river traffic. Legends abound here, most famously of the Lorelei - murmuring rock – where enchanting maidens lured unsuspecting sailors to watery graves. Look out for birds of prey floating above as we cruise on passing quaint villages – Saint Goar, Bacharach and Kaub – all famed for their wine production.

Later, arrive in Rüdesheim for a guided walking tour. A tangle of crooked houses, winding cobbled alleys and curious little shops, this pretty town is famous for its wine making. Set amongst vineyard-clad slopes, Riesling is the region’s speciality grape, and you’ll find a wealth of Weinstuben where you can sample the locally produced wines. A delightful marketplace lined with pastel facades and cosy taverns lies at Rüdesheim’s heart, overlooked by Brömserburg Castle. As you wander the maze of streets, don’t miss the impressive Klunkhardshof, one of the town’s finest 15th-century homes with its traditional timber frame and gabled roof.

After dinner back on board, reconvene in the bar for a digestif or perhaps a coffee with a shot of locally produced Asbach brandy. We remain moored in Rüdesheim overnight.

Cruise through Rhine Gorge & guided tour of Rüdesheim.

Castle Reichenstein - Rhine Valley, Germany

During breakfast arrive in the historic city of Mainz, a colourful ensemble of domes and spires rising above the riverbank. Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers, it’s famed as Germany’s wine capital and the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the movable type printing press. The excellent city museum houses a reconstruction of his workshop and two copies of original Gutenberg Bibles dating from 1455. Dominating Mainz’s skyline is the St. Martin's Cathedral, with its fine Romanesque architecture and another must-see is the spectacular stained-glass windows in Saint Stephen’s Church. On our guided walking tour explore the cobbled streets of the old town, stopping to admire the elegant patrician houses and charming timber-framed buildings.

Cruise towards Miltenberg

Lunch is served on board as we continue our scenic cruise so it’s the perfect opportunity to relax and make the most of the ship’s excellent facilities. Indulge in a treatment in a treatment at the hairdressers or the nail salon, or simply find a comfy seat in the lounge with an afternoon cup of tea and enjoy the views. This is the very heart of Germany’s winelands, a dreamy landscape of lush woodland and fertile vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy dinner on board as we continue sailing overnight to Miltenberg.

Guided tour of Mainz.

St. Martin's Cathedral - Mainz, Germany

MILTENBERG & WERTHEIM

This morning we arrive in Miltenberg, a beautifully preserved medieval village with a labyrinth of winding alleys and lanes to explore. With our local guide, discover the impressive gatehouse, standing as a proud guardian of the village and the charming marketplace, lined by traditional fachwerk buildings, with their characterful timber frames. Legend has it that the locals were allowed free wood from the surrounding forests, hence the abundance of this architectural style. Admire the square’s trickling fountain, ornately carved from stone and complete with dancing cherubs, and the intricately detailed Gasthaus Zum Riesen, claiming to be Germany’s oldest tavern.

Later as we drift away, we’ll pass under Miltenberg’s red-brick bridge as our Captain skillfully navigates the gentle meandering bends of the Main. This afternoon we’ll arrive in Wertheim, a delightful surprise, off the tourist trail and all the better for its unspoilt ambience. Passing the fishing boats at anchor, admire the little houses opposite, painted in cheery pastel tones. A russet-walled 12th century castle overlooks the old town, surveying the church spires, turrets and patchwork of multicoloured buildings below. Enjoy a late afternoon walking tour, discovering the town’s secrets through the eyes of an expert guide. Look out for the Zobelhaus, a contender for the narrowest house in Germany!

This evening enjoy another delectable dinner as we set sail towards Würzburg.

Guided tours of Miltenberg & Wertheim.

Colourful half-timbered houses in Miltenberg, historical medieval Old Town, Bavaria, Germany

Cruise towards Würzburg

Enjoy a relaxed morning of scenic sailing – one of the real treats of a river cruising holiday. Perhaps catch up on some reading or simply watch the world float by.

Early afternoon we arrive in the refined Bavarian city of Würzburg, sitting resplendent on the banks of the Main. A fascinating contrast to the quintessential villages we’ve encountered, after lunch disembark for a guided tour. Founded in the 10th century as the centre of the kingdom known as Franconia, the Marienberg Fortress overlooks neat rows of grand, pastel-coloured buildings punctuated by the spires and domes of the city’s many churches. The jewel in Würzburg’s illustrious crown is the Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace that whisks you back to a more romantic age. Originally conceived to rival the Palace of Versailles in scale, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and features one of Germany’s most ornate staircases and dozens of interconnecting rooms adorned with frescoes, priceless tapestries, sculptures and paintings. We moor in Würzburg overnight so there’s plenty of time to explore under your own steam too.

After dinner it is time to shake a leg! Highly skilled artists will cater for an hour of party mood and present musical highlights from the past and present.

ROTHENBURG & OCHSENFURT

This morning, experience something a bit different as we take a drive along the Romantic Road – aptly named to describe this route through some of the most spellbinding scenery in the world. Our journey takes us through a folkloric landscape, threaded by a procession of medieval towns, lofty castles and grand palaces. As you soak up the cinematic views, we’ll arrive at the glorious town of Rothenburg, crowning a hill with sensational views over the meandering river below. The quaint old town is cradled within immaculately preserved walls and there’ll be time to explore its pretty, cobbled lanes, lined with tall gables and pointy roofs. Our ship awaits a short drive away in Ochsenfurt and after lunch, spend the afternoon enjoying a guided tour. Wander through the old town, pausing to admire the town hall’s impressive mechanical clock and 13th-century church with its vibrant interior. You’ll be transported back in time as you stroll amongst the romantic, timber-framed houses and ancient ramparts. We return to the ship for dinner where another superb menu awaits and set sail towards Bamberg.

Historic town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany

Enjoy a morning of scenic sailing, taking a spot in the lounge or up on deck as a kaleidoscope of glorious vistas slip past.

This afternoon we moor in Bamberg, undoubtedly one of Europe’s prettiest small towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Planned by Emperor Heinrich II in the 11th century as a Franconian capital, it sits on seven lush green hills, reminiscent of Rome – a city whose grandeur it endeavoured to equal. Discover its history and architectural highlights on our informative tour led by a local guide, taking in the exquisite old town and exceptional multi-spired cathedral. Perhaps the most intriguing landmark is Bamberg’s town hall, which sits on an island in the middle of the burbling river, flanked by bridges on either side. From here you can also see ‘Little Venice’ – a picturesque cluster of fishermen’s houses built along the waterfront, mostly dating from the Middle Ages.

This evening promises another highlight, with a magnificent dinner hosted by the Captain, followed by a performance of traditional Bavarian music on board. Leaving Bamberg, we join the Main-Danube canal as we cruise to our final stop, historic Nuremberg.

Old town hall above the river Regnitz in the historic old town of Bamberg

Enjoy a relaxing final morning of cruising as we glide towards the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. Intriguing for its association with the Second World War, as the site of many pre-war Nazi rallies and later, the war crimes trials. What is less known however is that this historic city captivates visitors by its cobbled streets with classic half-timbered houses, an enchanting castle – rebuilt after the war – plus a plethora of historic landmarks. These include the Church of Saint Lawrence, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, and the intricate Church of Our Lady with its working mechanical clock dating from 1506. It overlooks the bustling Hauptmarkt, an elegant square renowned for its intricate fountain resembling a Gothic church tower. ARRIVAL IN NUREMBERG

Arrival in Nuremberg

You fly to Munich, where your comfortable coach transfer awaits to take you to your ship in Nuremberg. Your professional, English-speaking crew will welcome you on board, show you to your cabin and help you familiarise yourself with all aspects of this first-class floating boutique hotel before dinner is served.

Route map

Discover all these and more on our insightful city tour before there’s some time to explore at your own pace. Amid all this splendour, spare a moment to taste some of Nuremberg’s prized gingerbread or take some home as a delicious souvenir.

Cruise towards Bamberg

After a busy morning of exploration and discovery, we return to the ship and during lunch, we commence sailing through Germany’s rural heart towards our next destination, arriving in the early hours.

Guided tour of Nuremberg.

Awake this morning in Bamberg, undoubtedly one of Europe’s prettiest small towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cruising towards Ochsenfurt

During another splendid lunch on board, the ship departs for picturesque Ochsenfurt. Take the afternoon to enjoy the ship’s five-star facilities, while taking in the magnificent undulating landscape as we venture deeper into this beautifully scenic region. Indulge in afternoon tea and, perhaps, our chef’s special patisserie, while being sure to leave room for the evening’s dinner.

Guided tour of Bamberg & live performance of traditional Bavarian music.

OCHSENFURT & ROTHENBURG

Rise refreshed in the charming old town of Ochsenfurt and after breakfast disembark for a fascinating guided tour. Wander through the pretty old town, pausing to admire the town hall’s impressive mechanical clock and 13th-century church with its strikingly vibrant interior. You’ll be transported back in time as you stroll amongst the romantic, timber-framed houses and ancient ramparts before we return to the ship for lunch.

Something different awaits this afternoon as we disembark once again for a drive along the Romantic Road – aptly named to describe this route through some of the most spellbinding scenery in the world. Our journey takes us through a folkloric landscape, threaded by a procession of medieval towns, lofty castles and grand palaces. As you soak up the cinematic views, we’ll arrive at the glorious town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, crowning a hill with sensational views over the meandering river Tauber below. The quaint old town is cradled within immaculately preserved walls and there’ll be time to explore its cobbled lanes, lined with tall gables and pointy roofs.

Our ship awaits a short drive away in Würzburg where the chef is ready to present another superb menu, followed by a performance of traditional folk music played on traditional instruments by a lively Bavarian trio. Let's sing and dance together to the music of the world-famous Oktoberfest.

We moor overnight in Würzburg.

Guided tour of Ochsenfurt, visit to Rothenburg & live performance of traditional Bavarian music.

Founded in the 10th century as the centre of the kingdom known as Franconia, the Marienberg Fortress overlooks neat rows of grand, pastel-coloured buildings punctuated by the spires and domes of the city’s many churches. The jewel in Würzburg’s illustrious crown is the Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace, that whisks you back to a more romantic age. Originally conceived to rival the Palace of Versailles in scale, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and features one of Germany’s most ornate staircases and dozens of interconnecting rooms adorned with frescoes, priceless tapestries, sculptures and paintings. Discover the highlights of this elegant Bavarian city on our guided tour.

Cruise towards Wertheim

After lunch back on board enjoy an afternoon’s scenic cruising – one of the real treats of a river cruising holiday. Tonight, as the on-board pianist sets a genteel, laid-back tone, order a nightcap at the bar and settle in for the evening to chat with newly made friends as we sail overnight to Wertheim.

Guided tour of Würzburg.

The view on Würzburg and the fortress

WERTHEIM & MILTENBERG

This morning we arrive in Wertheim, a delightful surprise, off the tourist trail and all the better for its unspoilt ambience. Passing the fishing boats at anchor, admire the little houses opposite, painted in cheery pastel tones. A russet-walled 12th century castle overlooks the old town, surveying the church spires, turrets and patchwork of colourful buildings below. Enjoy a walking tour discovering the town’s secrets through the eyes of an expert guide and as we wander, look out for the Zobelhaus, a contender for the narrowest house in Germany.

Over lunch take in the views as we cruise on to Miltenberg, passing under its red-brick bridge and drop anchor for a late afternoon guided tour. Miltenberg is a beautifully preserved medieval village with a labyrinth of winding alleys and lanes to explore.

This evening enjoy another delectable dinner as we set sail overnight towards Mainz.

Guided tours of Miltenberg & Wertheim.

Miltenberg Old Town - Bavaria, Germany

Cruise towards Mainz

Rising this morning there’s no need to rush - we continue our scenic cruise through the morning, so it’s the perfect opportunity to relax and make the most of the ship’s excellent facilities. Indulge in a treatment in the spa or at the hairdressers, or simply find a comfy seat in the lounge with an afternoon cup of tea and enjoy the views.

After lunch arrive in the historic city of Mainz, a colourful ensemble of domes and spires rising above the riverbank.

Later, we arrive in Rüdesheim during dinner so if you’re keen to explore, hop ashore after the meal for a Rüdesheimer coffee with a shot of locally produced Asbach brandy. We remain moored in Rüdesheim overnight.

RÜDESHEIM, THE RHINE GORGE & BOPPARD

Disembark this morning for a guided tour of Rüdesheim. A tangle of crooked houses, winding cobbled alleys and curious little shops, the pretty town is famous for its wine making.

Cruise through he Rhine Gorge

We return to the ship for lunch. There’s a bucket-list treat in store this afternoon as we cruise through the world-famous Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and area of outstanding natural beauty.

This evening, we arrive in Boppard where our ship remains moored overnight. After dinner this evening, it’s time to shake a leg! Highly skilled artists will present musical highlights from the past and present. After dinner it is time to shake a leg! Highly skilled artists will cater for an hour of party mood and present musical highlights from the past and present.

Guided tour of Rüdesheim, cruise through Rhine Gorge & live on-board music entertainment.

Castle Reichenstein in the Middle Rhine Valley, Germany

BOPPARD & ANDERNACH

This morning there’s a little more time to explore Boppard, a true hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards.

Late morning we set sail once more and during lunch arrive in Andernach. One of the oldest towns in Germany and founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement, Andernach was then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls.

Tonight enjoy the Chef’s Dinner, when the chef prepares his superb ‘signature’ dishes for you to enjoy in the splendid surroundings of the ship’s restaurant, with a chance to reflect on the fascinating places you have discovered, poignant stories you have heard and the new friends you have made. Our ship moors in Andernach overnight so after dinner there’s the chance to hop ashore once more for a nightcap in one of the cosy tucked away wine cellars.

Visit to Boppard & guided tour of Andernach.

Mariendom cathedral - Andernach, Germany

Cruise towards Cologne

Savour a relaxing last morning of cruising as we glide on towards our final destination, Cologne, passing under the Bridge of Remagen.

After lunch, enjoy a guided walking tour of this most majestic of cities.

Return to the ship for dinner,  and afterwards enjoy professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras demonstrating perfect mastery of their instruments, showcasing melodies from the most famous European composers with a special focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn - a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.

Guided tour of Cologne & classic duo musical performance.

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL Köln Städtereise mit A-ROSA

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL

Today, Cologne Cathedral is still one of the most important buildings in the Christian world. The walls of this masterfully designed place of worship give way to large window areas and delicate tracery. The Gero Crucifix on the north side of the ambulatory is one of the oldest remaining large-scale sculptures from the Middle Ages, and the window designed by Gerhard Richter is one of the most recent highlights.

ANTWERP'S VLAEYKENSGANG

Back to the 16th century: The hidden Vlaeykensgang from 1591 connects the Hoogstraat, the Oude Koornmarkt and the Pelgrimstraat, and takes its visitors on a journey into the past. Today, antique shops, art galleries and the exclusive restaurant of Sir Anthony Van Dyck can be found in the historical buildings. However, shoemakers and the poorest people in the city used to live here. Pay a visit to the cobbled alleyway and soak up the medieval atmosphere.

STRASBOURG CATHEDRAL Strasbourg Fachwerk

STRASBOURG CATHEDRAL

Indeed, all paths lead to the cathedral in Strasbourg – however, the most spectacular is when you approach the cathedral along the Rue Mercière (Grocer Street). It leads directly to the magnificent west façade, with the 16-petal rose window (14.5 metres in diameter) over the middle porch – the richly decorated main façade of the cathedral – which reflects the architecture of three centuries (1176-1439), from early Romanticism to the late Gothic period. Above the rose window is a 66-metre high platform, with 332 steps leading up to it. It is worth the effort, as you’ll have a wonderful view over the city and its surroundings.

7 things to expect on your first river cruise

A river cruise is a travel experience like no other. An intimate and boutique cruising option, it blends smaller ships and less passengers with diverse destinations.

You’ll have plenty of time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views as you sail some of the world’s most storied waterways. From a cruise along the gentle waters of the Danube to a journey through picturesque French countryside it is such a serene and scenic experience. And what could be better than simply unpacking once and letting the crew take care of the rest?

Get set to explore the rivers of the world with a leisurely river cruise. Here’s what to expect as a first timer.

1. Smaller ships

The type of ship will depend on the destination and route you choose, but river cruise ships are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, and they accommodate fewer passengers. This means a more friendly and social atmosphere on board as the smaller ship size allows you to get to know your fellow passengers more easily.

Choosing a journey onboard a Viking river ship, for example, could see you sail on an elegant Longship – a state-of-the-art Scandinavian designed vessel, specially built to navigate the historic rivers on which they sail.

2. Scenic routes

Cruising is a cost-effective way of having a big adventure as you’ll visit several places during your trip. In fact, you can expect to visit a new destination every day on your river cruise.

River cruises offer stunning views of the countryside, as they navigate through rivers and canals. You’ll often pass by picturesque towns and villages and enjoy beautiful vistas of riverside landscapes and charming towns.

3. Inclusive packages

Many river cruises include everything in the upfront cost, such as meals, excursions, transfers, beverages and Wi-Fi. This makes budgeting and planning easier.

4. Culture up close

Unlike a cruise at sea, a river cruise allows you to be immersed in your surroundings as you make your way along your route.

Plus, you can enjoy guided excursions to historical sites and local experiences at each destination. With a Viking river cruise , an excursion is included at every port with local guides who will introduce you to their unique region. You can choose to join a range of included and optional excursions, like hiring an electric bike to cycle a valley, wine tasting in a centuries old winery or just choose to explore a destination on your own.

5. Comfortable accommodations

You’ll find beautiful, modern staterooms with balconies or large windows on your river cruise, so you can enjoy the views from your own room.

6. Smooth sailing

Rivers are generally calmer than open seas, so you’re less likely to experience seasickness on a river cruise.

It’s a smooth ride throughout, even as you pass through the river locks that feature on many European waterways.

7. Onboard luxuries

While river cruise ships are smaller, they still offer amenities such as lounges, fitness centres, and sometimes even pools or hot tubs.

Onboard dining options vary, but you can expect a mix of regional and international cuisine. Dining is often open seating, and you’ll likely have a choice of venues. Plus, if you cruise with Viking, you can dine alfresco on their Aquavit Terrace, the only true outdoor restaurant on the rivers of Europe.

The dress code on a river cruise tends to be more casual dress code compared to ocean cruises. There may be no formal nights, and business casual attire is usually acceptable.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
