Como is a commune in the northern region of Italy with a current population of 84,000. Como is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Lombardy and the commune itself is often overshadowed by the majestic Lake Como that stretches from the northern edge of the city.

Como has been populated since the Bronze Age by Celtic tribes and during the first century BC it became part of the Roman Empire. Due to its location at the edge of the immense Lake Como, the city has always played an important role in Lombardy and was a centre of commerce and trade during the Middle Ages. During this time of development a defensive network was constructed including a series of watch towers – you can still see one of the towers today (The Baradello). After French and Austrian conquests, Como was eventually incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1859.

Today Como is a world renowned tourist destination and thousands of people flock here to explore the impressive Lake Como and the surrounding natural landscape. 1. Como Cathedral

The cathedral in Como is undoubtedly the most impressive building in the city and is renowned for its beautiful architecture.

This church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and was constructed in the 14th century.

It features a Gothic design and was not wholly completed until the 18th century.

The front façade features a plethora of ornate stone work, stone statues and is topped with a series of small decorative towers.

The interior is lavishly decorated and one of the main features is the central dome – this is covered with gold artwork and some simply beautiful decoration.

Furthermore, the interior is vast and the various arches, columns and naves are all striking.

2. Como Archaeological Museum

Located in close proximity to the cathedral you can find the delightful Como Archaeological Museum.

This museum is actually housed in the Palazzo Giovio and features a fantastic range of artefacts that have been found throughout the Como region.

These artefacts and finds date as far back as the ancient Greek times and present a truly interesting look at the history of Como and its inhabitants throughout the years.

You can expect to find a range of pottery, jewellery, stonework, agricultural machinery and more.

3. Museo Storico Giuseppe Garibaldi

This fine museum is also housed within a former palace and is also located on the Piazza Medaglie where the Archaeological Museum is situated.

The Basilica of Saint Addondio is located a little out of the city centre, but it is a majestic church that is worthy of a visit.

The front of the church is quite plain and features simple stonework and a huge main doorway.

Alternatively, the interior features a set of huge stone columns and an ornately decorated main altar.

The altar has a beautiful series of coloured frescos depicting various religious figures and a gorgeous blue and gold decorative ceiling.

5. Take the Funicular up to Brunate

Brunate is a small town that is located high up in the mountains surrounding Lake Como.

If you travel to the eastern edge of the lake near the city of Como you can take a fantastic funicular train that scales the mountain and stops at Brunate.

When you reach the top the views from this town are simply magnificent and you can see both the city of Como and the Lake in all their glory.

There are several terraces and restaurants that offer stunning views and give you a place to relax and take in the clear mountain air.

For the adventurous, there is a 2 hour hike that takes the intrepid to the summit of Mount Boletto for even greater views of this magical region.

6. Take a boat ride on Lake Como

7. Visit the town of Cernobbio

Cernobbio is a town that is located on the western shore of Lake Como only a short distance from the city of Como.

Down by the shore of the lake you can find the Cernobbio Lido and the Piazza Risorgimento – here you can see some beautiful fishing and sailing boats and also grab a bite to eat in one of the fine restaurants or cafes.

Located on the Punta is the Villa Balbianello – this Baroque villa complex was constructed during the 18th century over the original site of a monastery.

Only 48 kilometers north of Italy's commercial capital of Milan, Como's leafy lakeside and stone-paved streets seem a world away. You can see its Roman origins in the orderly grid of streets of its historic center and the remains of the Roman gate, Porta Pretoria . It's more evident in walled medieval Como, a rare example of Romanesque fortifications, with the imposing Porta Torre (tower gate) at Piazza Vittoria.

If your taste runs to something more modern, Como was a hotbed of Rationalist architects, who laid the foundation of Modernism. The poster-child building of this movement is Como's Casa del Fascio , designed in the early 1930s by Giuseppe Terragni.

Como is easy to walk around, and its tourist attractions are within walking distance of the train station and boat landing. Como revolves around its lakefront promenade and the adjacent Piazza Cavour , from which you can follow the short Via Plinio to Piazza del Duomo .

As you stroll past shops, you can't help notice the abundance of silk; Como has a long history as the center of Italy's silk manufacture, so it's a good place to do some shopping. The 14th-century façade of Como's cathedral, which nearly fills one side of Piazza Duomo, is pure Gothic, a marble face highlighted by detailed stone carving and statues around a rose window, edged with delicate carved pinnacles. (Oddly, instead of the expected saints, the statues at either side of the main door are of Pliny the Elder and Younger, Roman residents of the lake who were far from friendly to early Christians.)

The Museo Archeologico is filled with an exceptional collection of Neolithic and Roman artifacts unearthed in local excavations, offering glimpses into the lives of the earliest human inhabitants and the Romans who later settled here.

The Museo Storico Giuseppe Garibaldi features the decisive battle of the Risorgiamento (when Italy gained liberation from Austria) that took place in the hills overlooking Como. The former palazzo includes furnished period rooms and exhibits showing local traditions and history. Especially fine and well-displayed is the collection of handmade lace.

It's worth the walk from the center to see this exceptional example of an early 11th-century basilica built in the Lombard Romanesque style. The tall, narrow interior seems more like the earliest Christian basilicas and is decorated in 13th-century Gothic fresco cycles, in quite good condition.

The church is the work of the 11 th -century master stoneworkers respected across medieval Europe as the M aestri Comacini -the Como Masters. You can see most of their intricate stone carving from the exterior of Sant'Abbondio in the Museo Civico, where it was taken to protect it from weather and environmental damage.

A funicular from the east end of the lakefront saves the steep climb up to the terrace settlement of Brunate, almost directly above Como. The views encompass the town and southern lake, backed by mountains. Climb higher to reach a terrace (with a conveniently placed café) looking to the north, across a different panorama of lake and mountain views.

Another monument to native son Alessandro Volta, the Volta Lighthouse , stands atop a hill, and when it's open you can climb to the top for even more sweeping views. A two-hour climb from Brunate brings you to the summit of Monte Boletto .

The prominent, white Neoclassical building on the lake is the Tempio Voltiano, a museum commemorating Alessandro Volta , the local resident whose name is given to the electric volt. His invention of the electric battery in 1800 created the first source of continuous electrical current. Built in 1927 to commemorate the centennial of Volta's death, the museum contains equipment used in his research.

Close to the temple is the beautiful and moving monument commemorating the victims of World War II and the resistance movement. Created by Milan sculptor Gianni Colombo, it incorporates stones from Nazi concentration camps and inscriptions of quotes from those who were victims of the Nazis.

The narrow and fjord-like Lake Como (Lago di Como in Italian) is 50 kilometers long and shaped like an inverted Y. But there is little of interest in the southeastern arm, and a ferry conveniently shuttles cars across from the eastern shore to Bellagio , the lake's most beautiful town, sitting at the point of the peninsula where the arms converge.

Como is no stranger to tourists, having been a favorite of upper-crust Romans, whose villas predated those of royalty, and Hollywood stars who have favored it more recently. The lake between its steep, wooded shores is beautiful enough, but on either side rise mountains, and to the north, the Alps, making the views even better.

You can tour the lake on a day excursion for the scenery, with a stop or two at towns. Or if you have a bit more time, you can see the major attractions around the lake by hopping on and off the frequent boats and ferries. To tour at leisure and on your own schedule, take two or three days and drive the 249-kilometer perimeter, crossing on the ferry between Varenna and Bellagio.

Regular boat services connect most towns from early spring through fall, but not all routes stop at the smaller towns. The frequent ferry (car and passenger) across the lake makes getting from Menaggio or Tremezzo , on the west shore, to Bellagio and Varenna easy. These are among the best places to visit on Lake Como.

Before setting out by boat, check the day's schedules carefully, so you'll know when the latest one returns and from what town. Summer hydrofoil service is fast, but don't expect to see anything en route.

Palatial Villa d'Este , built for an English queen and now a luxury hotel, sets a high standard for lake villas, with terraced gardens climbing the steep hill behind it. The rest of the town isn't quite so grand, but it has a nice holiday air, some chic shops (look especially for Como silks), and several outstanding Art Nouveau villas .

The most ornate of these is Villa Bernasconi , a short walk from the boat landing. The exterior is covered in intricate decorations representing mulberry leaves, silkworms, and other motifs related to silk production. The villa was built in the early 1900s for the leading silk manufacturer, Davide Bernasconi. Inside, an interactive museum tells the story of the house and those who lived there.

Il Giardino della Valle is a free botanical garden along a stream, with pools and sculptures. Cernobbio is the starting point for a narrow, winding road up 1,310-meter Monte Bisbino to a pilgrimage church and panoramic views.

On the lake shore underneath steep Monte Crocione, Lenno is best known for the villa and gardens that cover Punta di Balbianello , a long peninsula that curves out into the lake. The Baroque villa, built for an 18th-century Cardinal, is surrounded by terraced gardens, where lake views are framed by columns and balustrades.

The best way to get there is by boat from Lenno, or on certain days, you can walk the trail to the villa. You can see the interior, but only on guided hour-long tours, which fill quickly in busy tourist seasons. The highlight is the garden, though, so don't be too disappointed if you miss a house tour.

In Lake Como's mildest spot, the Tremezzina Riviera, foliage remains green all winter, so it's no wonder one of Italy's most famous gardens is here. Although the 18th-century palace of Villa Carlotta is filled with sculpture and paintings, most tourists come to see its fabulous hillside of gardens. At their best in May, when the camellias and 12-meter-tall banks of massed rhododendrons are in bloom, the gardens are filled with colorful flowers throughout the season.

Set in its own beautiful gardens that rise up the hillside through groves of rare trees to a scenic belvedere, the nearby luxury Grand Hotel Tremezzo has incomparable lake and mountain views.

The 13th-century Cluniac monastery of Piona surrounds the 11th-century church of San Nicola and its beautiful Romanesque cloister. This small enclosure is surrounded by delicate, graceful columns, each with a different stone capital carved in motifs that include plants and animals.

The cloister walls are covered in 14th- and 15th-century frescoes. In a shop near the gate, the Cistercian monks sell herbal lotions, honey, and candies made with products from the abbey gardens.

A long flight of stone stairs leads down into the terraced gardens of Villa Monastero. The formal beds of native and exotic plants that stretch along the shore have their share of statues, colonnades, and miniature temples, but with a relaxed and unfussy air.

The villa is now a conference center, open for tours when it's not in use. The gardens are a short walk south of the town (where you should park, if driving), a charming cluster of pastel houses along steep streets. Look for the parish church, with a giant fresco of St. Christopher on its façade.

There's no question that Bellagio knows it's the prettiest town on the lake, with its setting on the long point where the lake's three arms meet. No matter which way you look, the views are superb and usually framed by gardens or carefully maintained buildings.

Pricey shops line its few streets, one of which is a long flight of stone stairs connecting the upper town with the boat landing. Two gardens, one stretching along the lake and the other high above town, are the main tourist attractions – apart from the picture-perfect town itself.

You can save some climbing and get a good overview of the town and lake on the Bellagio Express, a miniature tourist train. The 25-minute circuit includes panoramic views, and you can get off at various places, such as the Melzi Park.

The elegant Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni sits at the tip of the peninsula, overlooking the lake and mountains.

High above town, the terraced gardens are spread around the historic Villa Serbelloni, which was clearly built to maximize the views of Lake Como and the Alps beyond. The highlight of the gardens, which are carefully landscaped in the 19th-century Italianate style, are the rose gardens set in boxwood hedges.

The villa is not open to the public, but the park is open for 90-minute guided tours (except during bad weather), which you must reserve at the Promo Bellagio office in Piazza San Giacomo.

As the lake steamer approaches Bellagio, you'll see a swath of green bordering the shore. Those are the gardens of Villa Melzi d'Eril, and a favorite place to stroll. The perfectly landscaped terraces and gardens surrounding the villa are all original to their early-1800s design to frame lake views with cypresses and statues.

Highlights are the water garden, a neo-Moorish pavilion, and the Orangerie. Although the Neoclassical villa is not open to the public, there are often changing art exhibits in the Orangerie.

The only thing you need to be aware of is that you need to wear appropriate clothing to be able to enter. This means you’ll have to cover your shoulders and I would say cover your knees too, although I’ve seen lots of girls in short dresses inside so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.

2. Walk around Piazza Cavour

No trip to an Italian city is complete without discovering the beautiful piazzas lined with streetside cafes, gelato shops (yum), and stunning architecture from classical to baroque and everything in between.

Como’s Piazza Cavour is located in the north of the city across from the lake and is the perfect place to stroll around, or people watch.

See the colorful villas and townhouses that back onto the square, and be sure to stop in one of the cafes for a drink or bite to eat in beautiful lakeside surroundings. You can also grab an ice cream from nearby Gelateria Guidi .

The piazza is located close to both the ferry pier and the train station, so getting around is a piece of cake. If you want to know what to do in Como, Italy then starting out at Piazza Cavour makes a lot of sense.

3. Rent a boat for a private lake tour

No trip to Como is ever complete without getting out to the lake! This is a really unique way to get a different perspective of the city and bask in the stunning scenery of Lake Como with the Alps rising majestically in the distance.

There are lots of options, such as this private 2-hour tour with your own captain, or you can don the captain’s hat yourself and rent a boat for 2 hours which gives you the ultimate freedom to explore on your own.

If you really want to push the boat out (did you see what I did there?), then you can opt for something like this luxury yacht tour , where you’ll get to explore Como’s towns and villas in style.

4. Explore Villa Olmo

Lake Como is really famous for its gorgeous villas that play host to A-list celebs on their holidays or even getting married like George and Amal Clooney.

Villa Olmo (Olmo meaning Elm, thanks to an Elm tree planted in the gardens) is an exquisite example of a Como villa and dates back to the late 18th to early 19th century.

The neoclassical architecture nods to ancient Rome with its towering columns and arches set in lush gardens on the lakeshore with over 800 species of plants and trees.

This is one of my favorite Como attractions, and as a bonus, it’s entirely free to visit! The only thing you need to be aware of is that the villa is closed on Mondays, so you have to plan your visit from Tuesday to Sunday.

Villa Olmo is located a bit out of the city center, but it’s still easy to reach with a 20-25 minute walk. It’s an absolutely stunning walk, and I can’t recommend enough to do it!

However, if you’d rather not walk that much, you can take advantage of the bus service running between the town and the villa. The villa also has a huge car park in case you’re planning to arrive with your own rental.

5. Visit Tempio Voltiano Museum

If you’re something of a history buff like me, you’ll not want to miss the Tempio Voltiano Museum , which charts the life of the local scientist Alessandro Volta , famed for inventing the electric battery (and where we get the words volt/voltage from).

The building that houses the museum is one of my favorites in Como thanks to its neoclassical design resembling an ancient Roman temple.

Inside you’ll find a collection of scientific instruments, photographs, and displays telling the story of Volta and his inventions.

The museum is located between Piazza Cavour and Villa Olmo, with an enviable waterfront location and a beautiful large park attached to the museum.

Similar to Villa Olmo, Tempio Voltiano is also closed on Mondays.

6. Marvel at the Life Electric Monument

After you’ve explored the Tempio Voltiano, you should also check out the impressive Life Electric Monument dedicated to Volta.

This modern sculpture designed by Daniel Libeskind was erected in 2015 and sits at the end of a pier jutting out into the lake.

Thanks to its location, the sculpture can be seen from around the town, including from the promenade, Piazza Cavour, and the Giardini del Tempio Voltiano.

7. Stroll around the lakeside promenade

One of my favorite things to do in Como Italy is to take a stroll along the picturesque promenade. The promenade runs in a semi-circle from Villa Olmo to the Passeggiata Romantica on the other side and offers stunning views of the town, lake, and nearby mountains.

The path is lined by beautiful trees, brightly colored houses, and little jetties with small boats bobbing on the water.

There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments along the way and to enjoy the views, such as the excellent Ristorante e Bar Canottieri Lario Como with gorgeous lake views.

8. Ride the Como-Brunate funicular

One of the most fun things to do in Como is to ride the Como-Brunate funicular railway from the city up to the clifftop village of Brunate for absolutely spectacular views of the surrounding lakeside landscape and out across the Alps.

The funicular was built in 1894 and has been transporting locals and tourists alike up its steep tracks ever since. The carriage will take you 700 meters (2,300 feet) up the hillside to Brunate, where you can soak in the views. 

You can check out one of the local restaurants (the Trattoria del Cacciatore is well worth a visit), hit the Brunate – Monte Piatto hiking trail, or explore the beautiful Art Nouveau villas on the hillside.

The service runs daily every 30 minutes from 6 am to midnight in summer and takes just seven minutes to make the trip. Tickets cost €3.60 one way or €6.60 for a return trip.

9. Visit Porta Torre

Porta Torre is a historic city gate built in the 12th century and surrounded by a selection of interesting shops, market stalls, and restaurants.

This impressive fortified tower stretches 40 meters above the town and was used to defend the city against the Milanese with whom Como was warring at the time.

You can also explore the nearby ruins of the original Roman walls and the Porta Pretoria gate, though the Porta Torre is certainly the most impressive of the city’s ancient structures. 

10. Wander through the Old Town Streets

One of the first things I like to do in any town or city I visit is to explore the old town, and Como’s is one of my favorites. Wander along the picturesque cobbled streets, which are bustling with brightly-colored buildings, charming cafes, restaurants, boutique shops, and more.

The old town is located between the lake and Porta Torre (see above) and is very central. Getting lost in the narrow streets is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Como!

11. Explore the Silk Museum (Museo della Seta di Como)

The Museo della Seta di Como explores the silk-making process and gives a fascinating insight into how silk garments are made from the silkworm to spinning and the final product through a series of displays and photographs.

Inside the museum, you can see the historic looms and learn about Italy’s clothing industry from ancient times up until today.

The museum is closed on Mondays, but you can visit on any other day between 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm-6 pm.

12. Attend a cooking class

It’s no secret that Italian cuisine is some of the best in the world, and I absolutely love Italian cooking. If you love pasta, tiramisu, and wine (and who doesn’t, right?!), then this Italian cooking class is just the thing for you.

You’ll get to visit the home of a local and learn how to make pasta the traditional way so you can impress your friends back home.

You’ll also get to make the traditional Italian dessert tiramisu and get to taste your creations, as well as indulge in another of Italy’s greatest exports; wine.

This experience lasts for three hours and includes all the ingredients, a local expert, tastings, plus wine, water, and coffee. Highly recommended!

13. Dine at a local’s home

If the idea of making your own dinner seems a bit too much like hard work, then let a local do all the work as you look on (and learn some tips) and get to enjoy an authentic four-course meal made using family recipes.

Again, to someone who absolutely loves Italian food, this really is a treat and shouldn’t be missed. This dining experience is a fantastic option, and it includes a cooking demo, a four-course meal, wine, water, and coffee.

14. Learn more about the city on a guided walking tour

I always find that taking a guided walking tour is the best way to get to know a new city and get the perspective and history from a local.

This 1.5-hour walking tour with an English-speaking guide is the perfect way to explore Como and learn all about the city’s history. You’ll get to see some of the top Como attractions, including Piazza Cavour, the Duomo di Como, the Church of San Fedele, Porta Torre, and much more.

The ticket also includes a cruise on Lake Como to the towns of Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Torno, and Blevio.

15. Hop on an electric bike to discover the city

Another fun way to explore the city is by electric bike. This 3-hour tour around the city and lake includes an iPad with useful info on local landmarks and a special audio helmet with guides in 19 different languages.

If you want to explore Como in a tech-savvy and fun way, this is definitely a great option (especially for getting up those hills).

16. Rent a Vespa and cruise around the lake

If you really want to explore like a true Italian, then renting a Vespa is the way to go. It’s definitely a very classy way to explore Lake Como, although it comes in handy if you already have experience on two wheels.

On this 3-hour tour, you get to drive all the way up to Tremezzo from Como while stopping at amazing viewpoints and photo spots. The best part of this tour is that you’ll have your own local guides to show you around – is there a better way to learn about a new place than from a local?

17. Go on a day trip to Bellagio & Lugano

Como makes a perfect base for exploring some of the incredible towns and villages around the lake, and this day trip to Bellagio and Lugano is an absolute must if you want to get a real feel for Lake Como.

You’ll get to experience two countries in one day as you embark on a cruise that visits Switzerland as well as the charming Italian towns.

Tickets include an English-speaking guide, transport by air-conditioned bus, ferry tickets, audio headsets, and complimentary bottled water.

18. Take the ferry to explore other towns (Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio)

Como is perfectly situated for boat trips to other nearby towns, and there are regular ferry services to some of the most beautiful spots on the lake, including Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio.

The ferry terminal is located just off Piazza Cavour, and tickets can be bought there or online via Navigazione Laghi , which operates the ferry services.

To be honest with you, I would recommend basing yourself in either Bellagio or Varenna if you’re spending more time at the lake and you want to explore more efficiently.

It takes around 2.5 hours to get to Bellagio from Como, so if you’re planning to explore from Como, you will have to spend a lot of time on the ferries. Not that it’s a bad thing though, as the views are simply incredible! Just make sure to plan accordingly.

How to get to Como

Getting to Como is super easy, thanks to its direct train connection to Milan. There are hourly trains from Milan to Como, and it takes only one hour to get there. Tickets are quite affordable too as they typically start from €5!

Another great way to get to Como is to rent a car . This is probably the best options if you’re planning to do a wider road trip in Northern Italy and visit some other stunning places in the region as well.

Even if you decide to come with your rental, I would recommend leaving it in a parking lot while exploring Lake Como.

Driving around can sometimes be a nightmare as the roads are really narrow and congested (especially during the summer months), and don’t get me started on finding parking!

How many days to spend in Como?

To explore all the best things to do in Como, I would say you will need two full days, but if you only want to do the highlights, one day will suffice.

Of course, if you want to make it your base to explore the rest of Lake Como, you will need at least 3-4 days for that. However, as I mentioned before, in this case I’d rather recommend staying in Varenna or Bellagio as they are more central.

Located on the Italian-Swiss border, the  city of Como in Italy  overlooks the southwest end of its  lake  and is surrounded by green ridge hills, resulting in unparalleled, natural scenery.

THE TOWN CENTER Perfect combination of architecture, history and culture

Enclosed within imposing medieval walls – of which Porta Torre , overlooking Piazza Vittoria , is one of the most scenic gates – the Como’s city center is home to fascinating squares , each with its own personality.

Piazza Duomo, Cathedral and Broletto

The main square is Piazza Duomo , which houses the imposing Como Cathedral ( Duomo di Como ): an eclectic building, combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The Duomo is open for visits on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on holidays from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Just between the cathedral and its bell tower is the Broletto , the former town hall that now often hosts art exhibitions and assemblies. It is a visually striking building, with a facade banded with Lombard marble in three different colors: white, gray and red.

Piazza San Fedele and its Basilica

Just a 3-minute walk from Piazza Duomo is Piazza San Fedele . This square, originally a grain market, is home to a beautiful Romanesque church dating back to 1120: the Basilica of San Fedele . 

If you happen to pass by this little square on a Saturday, you will have the chance to come across numerous stalls, where you can find antiques and handicrafts .

Piazza Volta and Piazza Mazzini

If you arrive in Como at the San Giovanni station and head downtown, Piazza Volta will be the first square in the historic center you encounter (less than a 10-minute walk). Piazza Mazzini is the adjacent square.

These two squares are the center of Como’s nightlife . Among elegant Art Nouveau buildings and stores selling typical products are numerous restaurants, wine bars and pubs to satisfy all tastes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll along the nearby Via Vitani , one of the richest vestiges of the medieval city of Como that is home to historic trattorias and fine stores.

A WALK ALONG THE LAKEFRONT The best places to take pictures

The historic center overlooks the lakefront with Piazza Cavour , where the office for purchasing boat tickets is located.

I recommend you go left, because the promenade leading to Como Lago station is under renovation and does not allow you to fully enjoy the experience. Here are a few attractions not to be missed on the lakefront!

Life Electric

As you walk along the lakefront you will see Life Electric , a monument by archistar Daniel Libeskind.

The  avant-garde work is located at the bottom of a small artificial dam (called Diga Foranea) and is a homage to the voltaic pile invented by Alessandro Volta .

Follow this Volta tour if you want to discover other places in the city of Como related to the scientist’s life!

Lakeside gardens, Volta Museum & War memorial

Talking of Alessandro Volta, don’t miss the nearby Volta museum , which collects evidence of his work and even the  first version of the electric battery . The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The regular admission ticket costs €5.

Next to the museum is the garden area overlooking the lake , a popular place for tourists and locals, especially during the summer season. Festivals and musical or culinary events are often organized here.

This area is also home to the imposing War Memorial ( Monumento ai Caduti ), a 33-meter (108-foot) tall rationalist-style building dedicated to the 650 fallen Como soldiers of World War I. From the top of the monument there is a magnificent view of Lake Como and the city. It is usually possible to climb to the top of the monument on Sundays, but currently it is only possible to do so during specific occasions as the structure is undergoing restoration.

VILLA OLMO A neoclassical villa surrounded by a large park

If you love historic villas , stroll along the romantic Passeggiata Lino Gelpi (which starts a few steps from the War Memorial) and reach the impressive Villa Olmo , a neoclassical building dating back to 1780.

The park is open daily from 7 am and closes at 11 pm in the summer season (early April to late September) and at 7 pm in the winter season (early October to late March). 

Villa Olmo is also the starting point of a simple and beautiful walk among villas and botanical rarities : the Chilometro della Conoscenza .

BRUNATE & SPINA VERDE To admire the city of Como from above

The Como-Brunate funicular

Want to enjoy a  breathtaking view  of the city of Como? Visit  Brunate , a town that overlooks Como from the top of a hill 715 meters (about 2,345 ft) high.

The  Como-Brunate funicular – which runs from Piazza Alcide de Gasperi , very close to the Como Lago train station – will take you to Brunate in a few minutes (see timetables and fares ).

Once in Brunate, you can walk for about 20 minutes and reach the Volta Lighthouse ( Faro Voltiano) , that can be visited every day except non-holiday Wednesdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (closed in case of bad weather).

There have also been reports of inefficiencies in dealing with people with disabilities (particularly regarding the return to Como from Brunate). If you have special needs, I recommend that you contact the company in advance through its official website.

Spina Verde park

Spina Verde Park is a protected forest which covers an area of 1000 hectares (3.86 square miles). The park is located southwest of Como and collects many sites of panoramic, historical, and natural interest .

One of the most interesting attractions is the tower of Castello Baradello , which stands on a hill overlooking the center of Como. It is a military fortification built in the 6th century by the locals (who were under the Roman Empire) and later restored by Frederick Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emperor.

The easiest way to reach Castel Baradello is by following a path that starts from Piazza San Rocco and leads to the tower in about 30 minutes .

Como’s main pier and ticket office are located in Lungo Lario Trento . Plan your trips on the  Navigazione Laghi website and, when possible, purchase tickets online to avoid standing in line under the sun. During the peak season the turnout at ticket offices can be indeed very high.

Public boat service is perfect if you are on a day trip and want to reach other towns such as Argegno ,  Bellagio ,  Tremezzina  or other towns of the lake.

Beaches in Como

If you want to relax on a beach, you can go to Lido Villa Olmo , a beach with two swimming pools and a bar that offers a beautiful view of Lake Como and the opposite coast.

Otherwise, on the opposite shore (at the end of Viale Geno) is the recently opened Lido Giulietta al Lago , which offers all the services you need for your day and often organizes events in its very popular bar and restaurant.

10 Best Things to Do in Lake Como

Near the border of Italy and Switzerland, Lake Como is surrounded by snow-covered mountains and home to some of Northern Italy's most charming and regal villages. It's often touted as one of Italy's most beautiful locales and is home to some of the country's most impressively luxurious villas. The near-alpine region also owes its popularity in part to its status as a go-to destination with celebrities like Richard Branson, Madonna, and George Clooney.

However, instead of spending your days in Lake Como scouring the bars and cafes for celebrities sipping on their aperitivi , make the most of your trip to this Northern Italian paradise by exploring the history of its villas and villages, taking a cruise on the water, or taking a day trip to the snowy slopes in the distance.

Explore the City of Como

Some people don’t realize that Como isn't just the name of the lake, it’s also the name of the city at the base of the lake. If you're not staying in the city of Como, there's plenty to see should you choose to take a day trip.

Like most Italian cities, Como has a cathedral, which was built back in the 14th century and features a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Other historical church structures worth seeing include the Basilica di Sant’Abbondino and the Basicilica di San Fedele. Como also has great shopping opportunities and happens to be the home of Italian silk manufacturing.

Take a Trip Up to Faro Voltiano

Some of the best views of Lake Como are found on the way up to the Faro Voltiano, a lighthouse located high up on a mountain overlooking the city and the lake. To get there, you can take a funicular ride from the water up to Brunate. Then, you'll have to hike about a mile uphill until you reach the lighthouse where you'll even be able to see the snowcapped Alps in the distance.

Spend an Afternoon in Bellagio

The town of Bellagio is located in the middle of the lake, right at the point where the water forks in two directions going north to south. It’s easy to get to as most ferries and water taxis will schedule stops there. While there, visit the Romanesque Basilica di San Giacomo which dates back to the 12th century, and stroll through the town’s little streets to shop or eat at one of the charming family-owned restaurants.

Bellagio tends to be one of the most popular cities for tourists in Lake Como, so be careful to avoid tourist trap restaurants located near the port. They will overcharge you and there's better food to be found if you know where to look.

Wander the Gardens of Villa Carlotta

The Villa Carlotta and its 20 acres of botanical gardens is one of the greatest spectacles in Lake Como. Located along the lake in the town of Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta got its name when the Princess of Prussia gifted the property to her daughter Charlotte. Today, the gardens are luscious with a wide variety of exotic plants, perfect for spending an afternoon of exploring in the sunshine. Don't miss a chance to take a look inside the villa too, where you'll naturally find plenty of beautiful artwork on display.

Pretend You're a Movie Star at Villa del Balbianello

Film aficionados will especially enjoy a visit to Villa del Balbianello more than most, as it has been used as a filming location for a number of popular movies. Located on the water in the town of Lenno, the house was used for scenes in Casino Royale, A Month by the Lake, and Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones . Of all of the properties operated by the National Trust of Italy, it has the highest rate of visitors, not just for its film history, but also for its terraced gardens.

Ski the Italian Alps

The snowy mountains of the Italian Alps are easy to reach from Lake Como and close enough to make a day trip out to the mountains for a little bit of skiing. The closest ski resort to Como is Piani di Bobbio , which has about 20 trails, but those staying on the north side of the lake might prefer visiting Skiarea Valchiavenna in Madesimo, which is a little closer and offers even more variety in its slopes.

Not only can you ski in the Italian Alps around Lake Como, you can also ski on Lake Como itself. It's possible to rent a boat and driver for a couple hours, throw on a wet suit and waterski or wakeboard on the beautiful lake itself. It's possible to do this at any time of the year, but the best time is during the warmer months of the year between March and October. If its your first time trying the sport, companies like Lino Noleggio and Sambuca Effect Wakeboard School can provide lessons.

Go Boating on the Lake

Wherever you stand in Lake Como, the views are stunning, however there's nothing better than gliding along the beautiful lake itself—and it doesn't have to be as extreme as strapping on some water skis. You can choose to take a leisurely cruise by renting your own boat, with or without a driver, or save money and spend your day riding the ferries around the lake. Boats also happen to be one of the easier ways to get around, so they really are the best way to explore the region and take in as many glorious vistas as you can.

Spend Time in Varenna

Varenna is known for being home to Italy's shortest river—the Fiumelatte, which means River of Milk and is also the home of many of Como's villas. You can visit Castello di Vezio , which is a medieval castle surrounded by olive groves or take a stroll through the botanical gardens at Villa Monastero , If you want to spend the night check Villa Cipressi, a charming hotel located inside one of the classic 14th-century villas. Visiting Lago di Como in Italy and wondering what to expect and what to see and do in the area? This guide should give you a good overview of all the top sights and the best things to do in Lake Como. Find out!

Lake Como (also known as Larius or Lario) is one of the most beautiful places in Northern Italy. With jaw-dropping landscapes, lovely little towns, and splendid grand villas, it’s an extremely picturesque destination with lots of history and charm.

There’s a lot more to see and do in Lake Como than it looks at first glance. So if you can, plan to spend at least a few days in the region. But even if you only have a day or two, Lake Como is absolutely worth a trip and it will leave you wanting to return!

In this article, we share only the VERY BEST places to see and TOP things to do in Lake Como that are worth your time the most. Yes, there is a lot more to do in Lake Como, but if this is your first trip and you only have a few days, this list will help you see all the musts.

These are the best places to visit and things to do in Lake Como:

1. Bellagio

The most famous of Lake Como towns , Bellagio should certainly be at the top of your list of places to see in the area. Sitting in the middle of the lake, Bellagio has the most amazing setting, stunning views, and is also very centrally located to stay for exploring the region.

Known as  the Pearl of Lake Como , Bellagio is popular among the rich and famous, but it’s also a really charming little town that has a lot to offer to any kind of traveler. You’ll find plenty of shops, hotels, and restaurants for all budgets here (although – in general – Lake Como is not a low-budget destination).

There is a lot to see and do in Bellagio beyond shopping and dining! Explore the old town and walk to Punta Spartivento from where you can enjoy nice lake views. Don’t miss the gardens of Villa Melzi – while you can’t visit the villa itself, the lakeside gardens are among the prettiest in the area. With more time, consider a tour of the gardens of Villa Serbelloni.

Good to know: The best way to explore Bellagio town center is on foot, but if you also want to visit several other places nearby, consider a hop-on-hop-off tourist train. It’s the easiest way to get to the charming villages of Pescalo and San Giovanni just nearby.

Getting there:  The fastest way to get to Bellagio is by boat. From Milan , take a train to Varenna followed by a short ferry ride to Bellagio. You can also come here by boat from Como and any other town on Lake Como. We do not recommend driving to Bellagio, unless in a quiet season.

TIP: Pretty much all organized day tours to Lake Como include Bellagio in their itinerary (see here for the best options).

How much time do you need:  We recommend 2-3 hours for a short visit to Bellagio or a full day if you want to see everything. If you want to explore deeper, stay late in the evening or even spend a night in Bellagio. That way, you can avoid the biggest crowds of day visitors and discover the more authentic, local side of this charming but very popular lakeside town.

Varenna is another must-see place at Como Lake. This colorful town with a scenic lakeside location encompasses the very best of Lake Como in one place. Varenna has a historic old town, a castle, and several grand villas with botanical gardens, but also a nice waterfront area, beaches, and plenty of hiking possibilities.

You can’t miss the waterfront area and the old town center of Varenna. Another must-see is Villa Monastero, one of the area’s most impressive villas with stunning landscaped gardens. I also highly recommend climbing to the top of the hill to visit Vezio Castle. The views from here are unparalleled!

Getting there: Located on the eastern side of the lake and easily accessible by railway, car, or by boat, Varenna is very easy to visit. You can get here by train from Milan, which makes it rather simple to plan a day trip to Lake Como, starting or ending in Varenna.

How much time do you need:  We recommend planning at least 2-3 hours for Varenna. Add 1.5-2 hours if you also want to visit the castle.

TIP: Most of the organized day tours from Milan include Varenna in their itinerary, together with a few other must-sees in Lake Como. If you only have a day to visit this beautiful area and want to make the most of your time, check out this highly-rated tour . 3. Boat trips on Lake Como

A scenic boat tour is one of the very best ways to experience Lake Como. Whether you are short on time and want to see some of the nicest scenery in just a few hours or have several days in the area and are looking for something really nice to do in Lake Como, you should really consider a boat trip on the lake.

And no, it’s not the same as taking a ferry trip between different towns. A private tour will take you closer to the shores allowing you to enjoy the best views from a unique perspective. You also travel slower, can stop for photos or even for a swim, etc.

Good to know: There are many places where you can take a boat trip on Lake Como. However, if you only have a day or two in the area and are traveling in the high season, it’s wise to prebook. Not only are you sure to be able to do this, but you can also see the prices, the itinerary, and customer reviews and find the boat tour that suits you best.

When we visited, our hotel also had the possibility to book a boat tour through them. However, their prices were quite a lot higher than what we found online AND the tours were unavailable on short notice.

Here are some of the most popular (private) boat tour options starting from the main towns of Lake Como:

• From Como town (1 hr): Scenic classic-speedboat tour .
• From Como town (2 hrs): Classic-speedboat private tour or this highly-rated speedboat tour (budget-friendly since it’s a shared tour, but you can also book it as a private experience at a much lower rate than other comparable options).
• From Como town (3 hrs): Private boat tour with drinks .
• From either Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Tremezzo: Private classic speedboat tour (2 hrs).
• From Bellagio: Sightseeing sailing tour (3hrs) or sunset sailing trip (2 hrs).
• From Paré (Lecco): Sailing tour on the eastern side of Lake Como (3-4 hrs small group tour).

Keep in mind that most boat tours only run in the warmest months. Some are possible from around May to October, others – only in the summer. Weather permitting, this tour from Como is available the whole year round, and this tour starting from any of the main towns in the center of the lake also runs in all seasons.

The biggest town in the area and the place that gave the lake its name, Como is another must-see in Lake Como. It has a very rich history and a really nice historic old town with a cozy atmosphere. You’ll find several interesting landmarks here, lots of nice shops and plenty of restaurants.

Unlike the smaller towns in the central part of the lake, Como remains lively in the low season as well. They even host a really nice Christmas market here from the end of November to the beginning of January. If you are visiting Lake Como in the winter, Como is one of the best places to stay (see also our detailed guide on where to stay in Lake Como ).

In the old town of Como, don’t miss the Cathedral, the medieval city gate Porta Torre, and the lively town square Piazza Cavour. There are also several other interesting churches and a few museums to visit. Be sure to also take a walk on the waterfront promenade. Here, you can visit Tempio Voltiano, a museum dedicated to Volta, the inventor of the electric battery. About 20 minutes walk from the center, you’ll also find one of the most impressive villas of Lake Como – Villa Olmo.

TIP: Take a funicular to the hilltop village of Brunate – more about it further below.

Getting there:  You can easily reach Como by car or by train from Milan. The town has the best boat connections on Lake Como too, allowing you to easily reach all the other places from here. Most  organized tours  to the area also include Como in their itinerary.

How much time do you need:  We recommend at least 2-3 hours for a quick visit, but you can easily spend an entire day here. In fact, there is so much to see and do in Como that we highly recommend you plan a day for the city.

Brunate is a hilltop village located just above Como town. Sometimes called the ‘balcony on the Alps’, Brunate offers some really nice aerial views of the town and Lake Como. What makes it even more attractive is that you can easily get here by funicular from Como.

The Como-Brunate Funicular is an attraction in itself and is one of the most popular things to do in Lake Como. Dating back to the 19th century, this historic funicular has been refurbished many times, and it now only takes 7 minutes to reach the top. The scenery along the way is really nice, but for the best views, try to get the lower carriage.

Good to know: The Brunate funicular runs every 15-30 minutes, sometimes even more often if it’s busy. In the high season and on weekends, it operates until midnight. You can just get the tickets on the spot.

The main reason to visit Brunate is the amazing views. The village itself is quite small but you can see several nice villas and be sure to visit the Sant’Andrea Apostolo Church.

The hilltop lighthouse Faro Voltiano offers even better views, but it’s quite a steep 30-minute walk from the funicular. Sometimes, there is also a shuttle to the lighthouse available – it’s pricey but it will save you a long climb.

How much time do you need:  Depending on what you plan to do, you need 1-2 hours in order to visit Brunate.

6. Villa del Balbianello

With its unique location surrounded by water from three sides, Villa del Balbianello  is probably the most famous of all Lake Como villas . You may recognize it from several Hollywood movies. It was used as a filming location in James Bond Casino Royale, Star Wars, and quite a few others.

Over the centuries, Villa Balbianello has served as a prestigious vacation residence and had various owners. Nowadays, it’s owned by the National Trust of Italy and serves as a museum.

The museum is dedicated to the last private owner, Guido Monzino, who was an avid explorer and climber. He made over 20 climbing expeditions all over the world and led Italy’s first expedition to Mount Everest. Inside, you can see all kinds of memorabilia from his various trips all over the world.

Villa Balbianello has several buildings and is surrounded by very picturesque terraced gardens that offer stunning views of the lake. Visits of the interior of the villa are possible too, but you can only do it with one of their guides and the spots are limited. In the high season, you need to book tickets for the museum weeks in advance.

But don’t worry if you can’t get the tickets to visit inside. It’s well worth coming here just to see the villa and walk around its gorgeous gardens.

Good to know:  Villa del Balbianello is located next to Lenno town on the western side of Lake Como. It’s open daily except for Mondays and Wednesdays, between mid-March and January. If you want to visit inside, book a guided tour  via their website well in advance. You can also get a ticket for the gardens online – it can save you a long wait.

Keep in mind that the gardens are hilly and there are quite some steps – not ideal for people with mobility issues.

Getting there: Villa Balbianello is located next to Lenno and can be reached on foot or by boat. If you walk, it takes about 20-25 minutes from town. Alternatively, you can take a small boat shuttle, which is a nice experience in itself. To reach Lenno, you can take a ferry from one of the bigger towns in the area. We do not recommend driving since parking in Lenno is very limited.

How much time do you need:  You only need about 0.5-1 hour to visit the villa. However, keep in mind that it will take quite some time to get there. Depending on where you are coming from and how you travel, you’ll likely need to plan half a day for a visit here.

7. Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero  is another exceptional villa that should be high on your Lake Como bucket list. It’s located in Varenna and is much easier to visit than Villa Balbianello. And in my opinion, it’s just as impressive!

Originally a 12th-century Cistercian convent, the villa has been rebuilt and expanded over the centuries by its various owners. Nowadays, it’s owned by the state and serves as a museum and a conference center. Also here, it is possible to visit both – the villa and its gardens.

Inside the villa, you can visit its beautifully decorated rooms. But the main attraction here is the botanical garden. The terraced garden is built along the shores of Lake Como and offers fantastic views. There are many walkways and you’ll find all kinds of statues and structures making it even more picturesque and enjoyable. There is a big variety of plants from different climates from all over the world, so the garden is lovely throughout the year.

While you can just visit the gardens, we highly recommend getting a ticket which includes entry to the villa-museum as well. It doesn’t take much time and we found it well worth a small extra fee.

Good to know:  Villa Monastero is open all year, but the opening times vary a lot depending on the season. In the summer, the gardens and the villa are open daily. For more information, see  their website .

If you want to be sure to visit at a specific time, you can buy your tickets online in advance, but it’s not a must.

Getting there: Villa Monastero is located in Varenna and is just a short walk from the old town center.

How much time do you need:  You can visit Villa Monastero and its gardens in about an hour.

8. Menaggio

If you want to experience all the best that Lake Como has to offer, consider a short visit to the picturesque lakeside town of Menaggio . It’s a nice place to come if you want to visit one of the prettiest towns in the area without the biggest crowds. Tour groups do not visit here and so Menaggio is incomparably quieter than Bellagio or Varenna which are just a short ferry ride away.

While you won’t find any famous villas or gardens here, Mennagio is so charming that it’s worth a visit just for the atmosphere. The town center is small and has a very relaxed feel to it. The best thing to do here is to simply walk around, enjoy the views, get a gelato, or sit down for a drink and do some people-watching. You’ll also find some nice restaurants for lunch.

If you are looking to do some sightseeing, there are a few churches in the old town. The organ was playing when we visited one of them and it was magical. Also, check out the walled marina on the southern end of the waterfront promenade.

Getting there:  Menaggio is best visited by boat. There are ferries from Bellagio or Varenna. You can also drive here, but parking is very limited.

How much time do you need:  1-2 hours are plenty for Menaggio.

9. Villa Carlotta

Located in Tremezzina on the western side of the lake, Villa Carlotta is one of the grandest villas of Lake Como. The 17th-century villa is so big and so well-kept that it almost feels like a palace.

Nowadays, Villa Carlotta is a museum and is everything that you would expect from a luxury vacation residence. With its impressive facade, lushly decorated interiors with valuable artworks, and huge botanical gardens, it’s one of the most popular destinations on Lake Como. It’s absolutely worth a visit!

In the 19t century, the villa was bought by Princess Marianne of the Netherlands, who later gifted it to her daughter Charlotte (Carlotta), to whom the villa is now named. She and her husband refurbished the villa and created several themed gardens introducing a wide variety of botanical species from all over the world.

The botanical gardens of Villa Carlotta are much bigger than those of any other villas that you can visit in the area. They are divided into so many different sections that exploring them is an attraction in itself. You’ll find Italian gardens with citrus tunnels, Japanese gardens with a bamboo forest, but also hundreds of different types of rhododendrons and azaleas, centuries-old trees, etc.

You can easily spend several hours wandering around here. However, there are multiple routes to choose from and you’ll get a map with time indications for your reference. So you can decide how much you want to explore depending on how much time you have.

Good to know:  Villa Carlota is open from March to the first week of November. There’s just one type of ticket here and it includes the villa and the gardens. You can book a skip-the-line ticket online in advance, but it’s not a must. See  the official website  for more info.

Getting there:  Villa Carlotta has its own ferry station on the western side of Lake Como. In the high season, you can easily get here by ferry from Bellagio, Varenna, and other towns nearby. You can also take a bus or a car to come here, but the boat is much easier.

How much time do you need:  You’ll need at least 1.5-2 hours for a visit to Villa Carlotta, but you could spend 2-3 hours as well. Depending on where you are coming from, you’ll likely need half a day for a visit here.

10. Villa Melzi

When it comes to the best things to do in Lake Como, there’s one more villa that really deserves to be mentioned, and that’s Villa Melzi d’Eril  in Bellagio. Dating from the early 19th century, this is one of the most impressive private residences on the shores of Lake Como.

Villa Melzi was originally the summer residence of Francesco Melzi d’Eril, the Vice-President of the Italian Republic. The Melzi family later sold the villa to the Gallarati Scotti family.

Because the villa is still privately owned today, you cannot visit it inside. But the beautiful gardens and the buildings in the gardens are open to the public, so it’s well worth coming here, also because it’s just a short walk from the center of Bellagio.

The lakeside avenue of plane trees offers really nice views, but be sure to also explore the rest of the gardens. Close to the northern entrance of the park, you’ll find a Japanese pond and a quirky hidden cave. The Moorish pavilion is also very nice to see and just next to the villa, you’ll find a small artificial pond with water lilies and a nice little sculpture.

Don’t miss the Melzi family chapel and the Orangery which houses a small museum filled with Napoleonic memorabilia.

Good to know:  In the high season, the gardens of Villa Melzi are open daily. You can get the tickets at the entrance. For more info, see  their website .

Getting there:  Villa Melzi can be reached on foot or by a hop-on hop-off tourist train from Bellagio. The gardens have two entrances, one of which is very close to the town center.

How much time do you need:  Count at least an hour for a visit to the gardens of Villa Melzi.

While it’s not the reason why most visitors come to Lake Como, the area is also famous for its many hiking trails .

From easy waterside promenade walks and rather flat trails between the villages along the shores of the lake to steep uphill hikes in the mountains surrounding Lake Como, there are quite a lot of options for all difficulty levels.

One of the most promoted trails is Greenway de Lago di Como . This 10 km (6 mi) sightseeing path brings you to some of the nicest areas between Colonno and Cadennabia/Griante on the western side of the lake. It follows the main road and some village streets and is a rather easy ‘hike’.

On the way, you can visit Villa Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, and also many villages and churches, etc. You need about 3-4 hours for this trail, but if you also opt to visit the villas along its route, it will take you the full day. You can find the interactive map of this trail here .

Another famous hike at Lake Como is Sentiero del Viandante , on the eastern side of the lake from Abbadia Lariana to Piantedo. This multi-day trail dates to Roman times and is about 45 km (28 mi) long. Hiking the entire trail would require a separate vacation in Lake Como, but you can also just do a part of it.

These are just a few – rather extreme – examples of Lake Como hikes. I encourage you to do some more research if you want to go hiking in this area because the possibilities are endless.

Good to know: The best season to go hiking in Lake Como is early fall or late spring. The summer months can be really too hot, especially if you want to tackle some of the steeper hikes. You will need good hiking shoes for most Lake Como hikes.

12. Beaches & Swimming

One of the best things to do in Lake Como in the summer is enjoying the lake to the fullest, and this includes swimming, of course!

Do not expect wide white-sand beaches with palm trees here, but there are quite a few places where you can swim along the shores of Lake Como. Most beaches are rather small and very low-key while some others have umbrellas and beach chairs for rent. And some boat tours also include a stop for a swim on the lake – which can be nicer than any beach.

One of the best public beaches in the most popular areas of Lake Como is the beach of Bellagio ( Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio ) in San Giovanni and there is a nice small beach in the center of Varenna.

Some other ‘beaches’ – like Lido di Bellagio , Lido di Varenna , or Lido Menaggio – are more like private beach clubs. They have designated areas on the shores of the lake with all the beach facilities, sometimes a pool, and some kind of access to the lake. Often, there is a wooden platform from which you can jump in the water for a swim. So it’s not a typical beach experience, but it’s also something that’s unique to Lake Como.

As long as you know what to expect and see it as part of the experience of visiting Como Lake, it can be nice. But if you come here expecting a typical beach, you’ll likely be disappointed.

TIP: Ask locals for beach recommendations in the area where you are staying, or – probably better – book a hotel with a nice swimming pool. Some luxury waterfront hotels also have access to the lake with some kind of swimming possibilities (but none of them have an actual sandy beach). Take a look at  Grand Hotel Tremezzo  or  Hotel Villa Serbelloni if you are looking for a hotel with direct access to the lake.

PRO TIP: If you are planning to spend some time on Lake Como beaches, be sure to pack water shoes ! The pebbles can be quite sharp.

13. Local Food & Cooking Classes

Italian food needs no introduction and you probably already know that some of the best memories of any trip to Italy are those related to food… So of course one of the things you must do in Lake Como is try some traditional regional food .

If you try just one local specialty, make it Risotto with perch ( Risotto con filetti di pesce persico ), the most famous dish of Lake Como. Every local restaurant has its own version of it, but we never had a bad experience. It’s truly delicious!

TIP: If you are looking for something more ‘local’ to do in Lake Como, consider a cooking class with a local. There are quite a few options, mostly in Como town, but also in Bellagio and other bigger towns in the area. I know that it’s not always easy to choose where to go and what to see in the Lake Como area, especially if you are short on time and only have one or two days. So I hope that this guide gives you a better idea of what to expect and helps you pick the sights that look most interesting to you.

You can’t really go wrong with any of the towns or villas mentioned in this guide. In the summer, Bellagio and Varenna would be my top choices, and try to see at least one or two villas mentioned in this guide. Whereas, in the low season, I suggest visiting Como.

A boat trip on the lake is worth it in any season (ideally not in the rain, though). It’s one of the best ways to get a glimpse of the nicest places of Lake Como in a short time.

In Varenna. Check the castle website a week in advance. The falconry demonstration days vary but amazing to watch various birds of prey while overlooking Lake Como from above, great pics too. Get the ticket that includes lunch, very well priced. I took a taxi up, then walked the path downhill back to town. I stayed in Varenna, easy train access from Milan, minutes to LC central ferry. Took Bernina Express daytrip on scenic train thru Swiss Alps, stopped at fondue place on way back. Just watch train times to not miss last train back to Varenna!

Top Things to Do and See Around Lake Como, Italy

In the Lombardy region of northern Italy , Lake Como comprises many villages and villas that are worth a visit. Whether you are looking to explore history at the duomo , or venture onto the water, the lake and its environs are the perfect choice for an Italian holiday. Here are a few things to do in Bellagio if you’re undecided.

Duomo od Como, for magnificent architecture

Take a seat at a restaurant or bar in the square out front and admire the magnificent 15th-century neogothic façade of the Duomo, including sculptures of Pliny the Elder and the Younger. The interior doesn’t disappoint either – with more than 400 years in the making, it spans architectural styles. Entrance, of course, is free.

This estate , on the western bank of the lake, offers an enchanting view of the area. Accessible by boat or via a short hike, the late 16th-century villa sits in a lovely garden with an assortment of beautiful flowers and greenery, creating a combination of art and nature that is hard to find elsewhere. It is a must-see for nature and history buffs.

Taxi Boat Varenna, for a boat trip on the lake

This service offers short or long trips from Varenna to various attractions on the lake. The shortest tour is that of Varenna , lasting half an hour, and the longest is called George’s tour, which takes you past the villas dotting the shoreline, including George Clooney’s, in Laglio (2.5hrs). The boatman will also give suggestions as to where to have lunch or dinner on the lake.

Jungle Raider Park, for adventure enthusiasts

Jungle Raider Park – which has two different locations in Civenna and Margno – is an adventure park with everything from ziplines to bungee jumping out in nature. It has seven different levels of difficulty, including paths specifically designed for children or beginners – or those feeling a little less daring.

Basilica of Sant’Abbondio, for history lovers

The Basilica of Sant’Abbondio dates back to the 5th century CE, making it one of the oldest churches in the area; however, the current Romanesque structure was built in the 11th century. The simple decor is balanced by a highly ornamented apse, with frescoes dating back to the mid-14th century. The building was constructed over different periods, so you can see how it was shaped by the trends of each era and understand more about the history of Como.

Museum Moto Guzzi, for motorcycle fans

This museum will definitely appeal to those with a passion for motorcycles and engines in general, as it lays out the history of motorcycles via displays of vehicles from different eras. Admission is free of charge, and it is conveniently situated if you are touring the various villages on the lake.

Botanical Garden at Hotel Villa Cipressi, for gardens with a view

Part of the wonderful lakeside Hotel Villa Cipressi that was built in the 1400s, the Botanical Garden is open to the public, whereas the rest of the building belongs to the hotel and its restaurant. The century-old garden, running down to the lake, features an abundance of plants and flowers that nature lovers will adore. It is spread over different levels that overlook the water so you get lots of beautiful views.

Forte di Fuentes, for seeing a Spanish fort

This historic fortress is significant in that it represents one of the few remains of the Spanish dominion of the area. Dating back to the 17th century, it sits on the northern part of the lake, near Colico. If you are interested in local history, this really is a must, as walking through what used to be a stronghold, inclusive of a square and a church, will unravel tales of war and culture to boot.

Enoteca Principessa, for wine tasting

This winery can be found in Bellagio, where the lake divides into two branches. The proprietor is very knowledgeable and friendly and will guide you through his wide selection of great local wines. It is also possible to purchase wines and have them shipped home, even if you live on another continent. This place is definitely worth a stop-off if you fancy sampling one of Lombardy ‘s most famous exports.

Sentiero del Viandante, for the best hiking

If you are a fan of hiking and can’t decide among Como’s many trails, this should be a contender. It is 45km (28mi) long, so it should be broken up into three or four stretches. Taking ramblers through the east coast of Lake Como, the path dates from Roman times and is the perfect way to explore the beauty of nature and art in the area.
