Good service in the past, but it appears the company may be out of business as it does not respond to email or return phone calls.

We booked a multi generational cruise for 2019, a couple of the bookings were handled through Companion Ships and I received nothing but excellent customer service. I recently booked (and then rebooked after a price drop) my Spring Break 2022 cruise through Companion Ships and looking to book an Oct 2022 cruise as well.

Can Not Find a Better Price/ Great Customer Service I found a 'Great Deal' through cruise compete website with this company. This is a family owned business and they treat you just like a good family would. No one could beat their price, not even Carnival Cruise. I called my agent at Carnival Cruise, who I have used in the past and she was not able to match or beat the deal that they offered. I was able to get other perks at no additional cost. I booked my cruise, hotel, and transportation to the port through them. Everything went smoothly, there was no issues with any of the arrangements, which made my vacation stress-free. I highly recommend this agency. I plan to use them for my class reunion trip next year.

I have booked multiple cruises with them over the past 5 years. From to Dave, his wife, and kids all great people. They do a AWESOME job on finding the best deal to include extras. They do not harass. You can understand them on the phone. Always gets back with you. The very first time booking was a tad nervous since there was no website. I understand it now better service this way. NEVER an issue on anything. You can trust them 100%. I already have 2 more cruises booked with them in the next year.

Awful customer service, sloppy work, too busy to care and rude! They made a mistake in our booking that resulted in it getting cancelled. They were unapologetic and unable to fix it. There's a reason the BBB thinks this company is out of business.

If you are ever approached by anyone giving or selling you a cruise by the company name "Companion Ships, Inc.", run away from it as fast you can. I have been trying to get a cruise booked through them because i received it as gift certificate from a company named "celebrity china & crystal" out of Lenexa, KS and it has been nothing but excused of , " we have not received your emails, or yea we will call you back" since April of 2011, it is now about to be July of 2011 and they are still not keeping to their promise and the cruise line prices keep going up. So Just watch out if anyone ever gives or sells you a certificate good for a year to be cashed in. IT WILL take you that long just to get them to give you look your way. Oh since there is not a place for their email address here it is so you can cross reference yourself : [email protected] Also there web site is down........ things that make one wonder...... once you get a hold of them they are friendly..... they need more help

My husband and I have booked with Dave Somma, the owner of CompanionShips twice now and have been very happy with him meeting or exceeding other cruiseline or travel agency pricing. I was a bit nervous at first since this agency doesn't have an actual website which seemed sketchy, but was told since it's a family run business they don't feel the need for one and with all the cruises they do from referrals from other customers/word of mouth, they don't need one. We did receive our reservation number with both the cruiselines we have booked through him right away and access to the cruiselines including emails from the cruiselines right away, so clearly there were no glitches. The first cruise was completed Jan. 2018 without any issues, the other later this year.

Just booked our Western Caribbean Cruise on Carnival Magic yest with Dave and his son Jeremy Somma at CompanionShips after receiving their cruise bid through Cruisecompete. Dave was super friendly, knowledgeable, and amazing in getting us the category of room we wanted at couple hundred dollar savings from one we had on hold through Carnival itself, as well as beating a bid (plus offered us an onboard credit) we had received from another cruise agency through cruisecompete. Dave took plenty of time with me, probably at least 45 min., in looking at several different cabins/categories, and didn't rush or pressure me into booking. After booking and giving him my cc deposit, he immediately directed me to Carnival's site to show me our booking information which was so reassuring since I had never heard of this company and had also never used cruise compete. Would definitely recommend CompanionShips!!!! Thank you Dave and CompanionShips!!! The small, personable touch company makes a difference instead of feeling like you're just a number!

I want to alter my review as I was very upset over the transportation company that took us to the ship. Dave the owner wrote me a very sincere letter and I do have to advise anyone looking for a good deal on a cruise, Dave will work to find it. I cannot fault the cruise or the deal he gave us. I just cautioned him about recommending any transportation company other than the ones connected directly with the cruise lines. I will probably try to book through Dave again, however I will be sure to be careful about my transportation to the ship. He is a hard working owner and it isn't a big assembly line cruise company and there is something rare and special about that. My husband and I were very emotional about that terrible transportation company in Alaska and we truly were frightened being in the vehicle they sent and also with the driver who just picked up the job the night before. The cruise overshadowed that difficulty so I would surely give this company a chance. Personally I did not like dealing with the big companies whatsoever.

We got a great deal through this company and the owner did spend a lot of time with me booking it however, once we got to Alaska the company he referred us to that transported us to the ship was less than dismal. We almost missed the sailing. I called him from up there feeling helpless with no alternatives and unfortunately at that point there was nothing that could be done to remedy the situation. Just be sure to book transportation with the cruise line itself. This will guarantee you won't miss the ship!

I have been booking with CompanionShips since 2010 and have always had great service. Dave is a true cruise professional. He and his wife and 2 sons all work the business and make sure what you want is what you get. His prices are great and will work to make sure you the least expensive price for the best cabin possible for the price. The very best way to get hold of him is through a phone call. Anyone that texts knows that email and texting is not the way to conduct business. I know that even when I talk with my kids that I can get more accomplished in 2 minutes on the phone than I can in 30 minutes through email or text. So if you want to get pricing or book a cruise, definitely call. If he can not talk to you at that time, because he is on another line, usually Pam, his wife, will take your number and he will call back. He will let you know the info he needs to book the cruise and take care of it for you. I have booked 11 cruises with him in the past, 2 of which were booked in the past 3 months and 20 minutes ago booked a 4 day cruise for my daughter and family.

I have booked with Dave for my last 5 cruises, most have been family cruises for 10 and 11 people with 4 cabins. He has always been very professional and if I have a question or request that I feel is somewhat urgent he will make sure it gets done quickly. If I have a general question or want something that can wait a bit, he will let me know that and will get back to me within 24 hours. I have absolutely no problem with the way he, his sons and his wife conduct their business. He has always came up with a better price than the cruise lines. He has made a number of changes for me, when pricing would be reduced for a cruise. I even sent him some Kona Coffee, as a thank you, from Kona, Hawaii. He has worked with me, on my bookings, in such a great way that I almost consider him a friend. His wife, Pam, is a sweetheart. She sometimes answers the phone and will make sure he gets my message or will interrupt him, if it is urgent, and put him on the phone. Great company and great people, that work, diligently, for their clients.

Just like the previous reviewer, we received a very competitive quote from CompanionShips and when I called them, Dave booked the cruise for us. We needed two staterooms for a family of six and Dave was very knowledgeable about where exactly we should reserve the rooms to have the best sleeping arrangements. I couldn't be happier with their services. The cruise was fabulous and when we decide to cruise again, we will call Dave for sure.

RCCL insists that price is always the same unless a TA has a group booking held from some time back when prices were lower. I debated for quite a while then ended up deciding that more involved service from a TA who came highly recommended was worth forgoing the extra $100 OBC. I do a ton of my own research for my trips - but that tends to mean I need more changes done to my reservation and my TA has to deal with about a million more questions. I ended up feeling more comfortable going with a TA who was somewhat of a known quantity. Plus, if i see a price drop I want my TA to jump on it ASAP! TAs with such high OBCs are giving it up from their own commission - so are often unlikely to provide quite as good service. E

The credit card statement shows the cruise line's name as the billing company and I'm able to see my booking online on the cruise line's website. I will try to remember to update again when I've actually taken the cruise which is later this summer. I have to say that dealing with this agency is unlike any other travel I've dealt with. Not excellent, not horrible, just... unusual (and pleasant enough for me to make the booking). For example, they don't like communicating by e-mail (even though they're on cruisecompete.com which suggests intensive web interaction) and seem to work really long hours (into the evening, not just 5 or 6pm)! PEZD, was your cruise request with a cruise line in the Celebrity family of cruise lines (such as Royal Caribbean)?

ShopperfiendTO wrote: ↑ Hi storm9828, Yes, it was fine. I don't know if a lot has changed since I booked though... but when I did my booking, it was a really small outfit run by David Somma (only a couple of employees?) and nearly all of the business was done by phone (keep that in mind as you're in CA (west coast) and the office is in MA (east coast)). The most important comfort factor was that the credit card was charged directly by the cruise line - this is crucial for you to confirm once the deposit is charged. They seem to use the same invoice form as other agents so that was comforting as well. I think the goal of the company is to attract ongoing group business (e.g., family reunion cruises) by knowing he's your go-to-guy for best pricing. What I was offered was what I paid (though you do have to keep track of the offer in case your file gets transferred around). Two notes though: 1. if this is your first cruise and you think you might need your hand held through the process, I would probably advise you to go with a full service agency if the price is only a little bit more. I wasn't expecting very much from them other than making the booking at the price and that's what I ended up with so I don't know how they are if things get complicated. 2. this is a no-frills company, so it likely doesn't get preferential e-mails that the large-volume agencies might get such as upsell offers (if the cruiseline has this practice). I would recommend if you're an experienced DIY cruiser who knows what he/she wants and is willing to forego the frills for the lower price. Hope this helps.

How to Find a Travel Companion: Safe Options and Some to Avoid

Janice Waugh

February 20, 2023 by Janice Waugh

image, solo traveler and companion hiking

Finding a travel companion can make travel better but it can also make it worse.

There was a lively debate about finding a travel partner on the Solo Travel Society on Facebook.

  • The majority of people considered this service counter to solo travel. Karen wrote: “I don't want to connect with anyone, love being solo. “
  • Some thought that there was definitely a place for it. Danielle wrote: “when it comes to hiking or camping remotely while solo, that's a little nerve wracking and I'd love to meet up with people who are in the same mindset. “
  • Some liked the idea as a means of getting around the single supplement. Mary wrote: “I like the idea of being connected to someone sometimes to avoid that “single-occupancy tax. “

Let's be clear: despite being a solo traveler, I have traveled with companions many times and had good success. It can enhance the travel experience as you discover a new destination through your own cultural lens and that of your new travel companion as well.

Yet, whatever your reason for seeking a travel companion, I suggest you proceed with caution and use the methods below. They are safe and will help increase your chances of making a successful match.

How to Find a Travel Companion: Methods I Can Recommend

There are safe ways to find a travel partner for a day, a week, or more. These methods give you the freedom of being solo and connecting to interesting people when you want.

1. Get a warm introduction from a friend.

One of the best ways to find a travel companion is through a friend or family member. Being concerned for your safety, they will only suggest that you travel with people they trust. Hopefully, you will be geographically close enough to meet each other a few times before setting out so that you can determine for yourself whether they are a person with whom you'd like to spend a lot of time.

2. How to meet the right travel companion along the way.

This has happened to me most often in hostels, but it doesn't really matter where you meet them. The point is that you meet a travel buddy as you travel, not before. You get to meet them in person and spend a few days together sharing meals or day tours before committing to anything longer. Spend the days in the public sphere and return to your own safe accommodation every night. Eventually, you can decide whether this is the right person for you to travel with.

3. Let your tour/cruise company connect you with a travel partner.

If your goal is to avoid the single supplement on a tour or cruise, ask the travel company to partner you with another solo traveler. Most companies will and, if they can't, they'll give you your own room for no additional charge. See our Deals  page for tours and cruises with no or low single supplements.

4. Use Meetup.com to find locals who want similar experiences

Meetup.com is a fabulous resource for solo travelers to meet people of similar interests. These are most often locals, not people to travel with. But, locals! How great is that? I used Meetup.com and found people to hike with in Hong Kong.

5. Book a greeter and have a local share their city with you.

International Greeters  connects you with locals who volunteer to show off their city. I've used this service in Paris, New York, Kyoto, and Chicago. It's a great way to meet and have fun with someone new. I've gone cycling, shared lunch, and shopped with greeters.

6. Women Welcome Women World Wide

This is an international community of 2,400 people in over 80 countries. They are mostly women over 60 who want to travel more often and meet locals, so they host one another for a tea or a stay as they travel. Read  Women Welcoming Women: A Gateway to International Friendships .

7. Take a day tour or a class to find a travel companion.

If social is what you're looking for, schedule in time for social activities. Day tours and group lessons give you a social experience. Perhaps you'll meet someone with whom you'd like to spend more time. Read How to Travel Alone Without Being Lonely: 10 Tips & 6 Short Stories .

3 Safety Rules for Traveling with Someone New

Traveling with someone you do not know really well requires a few safety tips, especially if you're traveling independently:

  • Stay in public. When you are with someone new, stay in the public sphere for at least a few days. You need a bit of time to get to know them before renting a car together or sharing a hotel room. Eventually, determine whether this is a person with whom you truly feel safe.
  • Be proactive . Choose who you want to spend time with. Make your own decisions rather than responding to invitations from others who might have agendas of their own.
  • Don't be rushed into a decision. If you are considering traveling with someone, don't be rushed into the decision. If the idea comes up but they say that you must decide by a time that is less than comfortable for you, decline the opportunity.

Apps/Sites for Travel Companions: My Concerns

There are a number of apps and websites that will help you find a travel partner. I have concerns about them for the following reasons.

  • Compatibility . Just because you're going to the same destination does not mean that you're compatible with someone. You may not discover until you're into the trip that you don't share the same interests or ways of exploring, never mind the rhythm of your travels. This can make for a miserable trip.
  • Catfishing . A catfish is someone online who pretends to be someone they're not. Without a real life connection, there is no way to know who is real and who isn't on social media. This could put you in a vulnerable situation where the person you thought was going to be your travel buddy is actually expecting to hook up, is not who they pretended to be, or worse.
  • Misunderstandings . The potential for a serious misunderstanding is another reason I don't promote the idea of finding a travel partner on an app. Your new travel partner may not have had any intention of deceiving you and may not mean to cause you any harm, yet they may have different hopes for the trip than you do.
  • Telling the world you're solo . By participating on an independent matching site and sharing your itinerary you are telling the world that you are traveling solo and where. While I don't hide the fact that I'm solo while I travel, for safety reasons, I don't broadcast it either.
  • Sites/apps can get too much personal information . In an effort to increase member safety, some sites go through a variety of verification steps, including gathering government ID information. This raises identity safety concerns.

Because I can't promote the sites that help you find a travel partner (I don't have experience with them), I'm not giving you a list. However, if you are still interested, you will find a list on Google. If you do so, I hope you'll be cautious with a new travel partner and read the Solo Travel Safety section of the site before leaving.

Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

Or admire the island’s architecture on a walking tour that takes you to the candy-pink Parliament Building and the limestone-cut Queen’s Staircase.

Stingray spotted in Honeymoon Harbor in Bimini, Bahamas

Honeymoon Harbor in Bimini, Bahamas

Sleepy Bimini lends itself to doing very little, with powdery beaches and coral reefs to enjoy. But adventurous couples have plenty of options. Join a tour to snorkel with reef sharks, or try sport fishing.

Take a boat to pristine Honeymoon Harbor, where you can hand-feed docile stingrays. Or head out on a local fishing boat to learn how conch, a local delicacy, is harvested.

CocoCay, one of the best cruises for couples

CocoCay, Bahamas

The award-winning CocoCay is a dream for any couple, with its spectacular waterpark, limpid lagoon, and glorious beaches. Head to the adults-only Hideaway Beach and sip cocktails to a soundtrack of chill-out music.

Or elevate your experience at Coco Beach Club, where the ultimate romantic experience is to spend the day in a private overwater cabana, the first in the Bahamas. An attendant will keep you supplied with refreshments, and you can glide down your own slide into the crystal-clear water to cool off.

All the Single Ladies: Cruising Is Perfect for Bachelor Travelers

Cruises are notoriously romantic, featuring candlelit dinners, colorful sunsets and the chance to visit some of the most honeymoon-friendly destinations all over the world. What about single travelers? Whether passengers are traveling alone or happen to be the third wheel, cruising makes it easy to meet new people - and who knows, a future spouse may be just on the other side of the boat.

Singles-only nights

While speed dating may seem like a quick and easy way to get to know a stranger, cruises dress up the rat race with evening cocktail parties and singles-only events for those who want to connect with someone during their cruise vacation. Rather than finding a soulmate at the top of the Eiffel Tower during a European cruise , why not stay onboard for the chance to meet another cruising enthusiast?

Additionally, passengers can grab a dancing partner during any number of these singles-only parties to see whether there's any real chemistry.

Onboard activities catered to singles

Tennis courts and yoga classes cater to groups of people, and passengers traveling alone can get fit while working up a sweat with new friends. After exercising, singles can enjoy a casual, healthy lunch at the Sanctuary , which is available only for adults and lends a tranquil atmosphere that is perfect for getting to know new people.

If passengers want to enjoy more intimate social interactions, they should reserve a spot in a cooking class or wine tasting session, which is a sure-fire way to find someone who shares the same passion for food.

Of course, singles who go to the casino are nearly guaranteed to make new friends and may want to try their luck asking someone special out for a romantic dinner later during the cruise vacation.

Leave the ship with new friends

Caribbean shore excursions are also a great way to meet people during a cruise, whether passengers are going scuba diving, hiking or simply walking around seaside villages. Based on the activities they choose, passengers can share an afternoon with like-minded travelers who love the outdoors.

Have a flair for European art? Take a shore excursion to Venice , Italy, where cruisers will have an excuse to talk about Renoir with other passengers and potentially find a new traveling buddy for cruises in the future.

Travel Companions for Seniors – How to Find the Best Travel Partner for You

Many women over 60 love to travel, but don’t want to travel alone. If you’re looking for alternatives to traveling solo, perhaps you would do well to find a good travel partner.

Traveling can be a bit of a stress-test for a friendship – being in new surroundings with a different schedule, different food, and even different customs and languages can present challenges to your friendship if you’re not prepared. Some otherwise wonderful friends are not always the most ideal travel companions.

Before you embark on a long journey, it’s best to think ahead and talk in advance to make sure you and your travel partner are well suited to travel together.

Here are a few tips for how to communicate and plan to find the perfect travel partner:

Discuss Your Goals for the Trip

What do you most want to experience on this trip? Are you hoping for a relaxing visit to the beach, or a bustling sightseeing tour with an action-packed itinerary? Do you want to spend time alone, or stay together most of the time? Do you want to meet new people, or get to know each other better? Do you want to experience serenity or stimulation – do you want to retreat from civilization, or get caught up in the excitement of an urban center?

It’s best to have a sense of what kind of vacation experience you want to get, prior to embarking on the journey. Talk with your travel partner about your hopes and expectations. Even if you don’t agree on absolutely every aspect of the trip, make sure you have enough common ground and can support each other in finding your ideal vacation experiences along the way.

Choose a Good “Roommate”

It’s wonderful to have a travel partner to share the adventure with – but make sure you are compatible. Is your travel partner easy to get along with in close quarters, or do they have a lot of particular needs that make it difficult to share space together? Do you enjoy each other’s company? Can you have fun talking to each other for hours – and more importantly, perhaps, can you enjoy the silence together and share space without constantly having to entertain each other?

Talk About Your Budget

Traveling with a friend is a great way to save money on accommodation and meal expenses, but make sure that you both have the same idea of what you want this vacation to cost.

Will you be splitting the costs of the trip (hotels, restaurant meals, tours, etc.) or each paying your own way separately? Does one of you have more expensive needs than the other – will you both be happy in a no-frills hotel, or do you need a more deluxe set of accommodations?

Talking about these issues in advance can avoid any misunderstandings or hard feelings once you are on vacation.

Take a Short Trip Together First

It’s often best to take a test run with your new travel partner, to make sure you can be a good team on the road. Before you book a round-trip ticket to the far side of the world, consider taking a short weekend trip to stay at a nearby Bed and Breakfast.

Choosing the right travel partner can make your vacations even more enjoyable and often affordable. Just make sure to discuss some expectations upfront to make sure you both can get the vacation experience you were hoping for – without any misunderstandings or disappointments along the way.

Have you ever traveled with a friend? What did you learn from the experience that you can share with the rest of the community? Do you have any other senior travel tips to share? Please join the conversation.

I’m interested in assisting people who come to Hawaii. I ask a fee and can translate to an intermediate level in Japanese and in Spanish. I am curious if your platform is geared to providing a list of available travel companions. I think it could be fun.

Vicki Trzepacz

I am looking for a female travel buddy for Europe.

I would love to meet up on Zoom or chat by phone and get to know you better. I taught ESL (English as a Second Language) for business in Japan and in South America for over 15 years… and also instructed in Art. I sometimes was involved in translation and interpreting. I’ve authored and co-authored some bilingual books in both languages + English. My language skills are not at a professional level, but I was able to conduct business and travel for years in both areas of the world and others, occasionally working as a guide. Feel free to contact me if you still need a travel partner and times that are available to you. I live in Hawaii now but am available to travel, depending on the dates.

People start thinking about their retirement bucket list and how to travel with companionship as they retire. The wrinkle in travel for seniors came when COVID-19 forced many older adults to re-think or cancel their plans. Even now, COVID and vaccination requirements can complicate the most well-laid plans. Older adults are the most vaccinated group in the US and feel more confident about traveling now.

Jump ahead to these sections:

What is a senior traveling companion, and what do they do, how much does a senior traveling companion cost, pros and cons of senior traveling companions, how to find a senior traveling companion for you or a loved one.

The senior travel industry is rebounding. Travel agencies that cater to older adults reported significant increases in bookings in 2021. As eager as older adults are to take to the roads and airways, safety, access to medical care if needed, and companionship are top of mind. People are living longer, and as the average age of a senior traveler increases, so does the desire for protection and guidance. Many seniors refuse to let their physical conditions prevent them from traveling.

Senior traveling companion services are an excellent option for single or partnered older adults who want the security of another person or group to accompany them. In cases where someone requires hands-on assistance, a companion is a necessity. You may not have considered this option before, but after learning more about a senior traveling companion, you might decide this service is just the ticket to the grand vacation you have been dreaming of.

A senior traveling companion is someone who can be younger and accompany a senior on a trip as a professional planner, tour guide, or caregiver. Or a senior traveling companion is another older adult or group of adults who travel to the same destination together.  Each category of companion will have different tasks and motivations.

Travel buddy or companion

A travel buddy is paired with you for similar interests and destinations. A travel buddy or companion service will:

  • Allow you to pair with a preferred travel companion. Some services are similar to dating sites where you can designate gender, duration, location of trips, etc.
  • You can contact the people you think are compatible to discuss and decide whether to travel together.
  • A travel buddy service is for singles, couples, and groups.
  • Using a travel companion service is not necessary. You can use word of mouth, the local senior center, or a social media shout-out for a buddy to travel with.

Travel planner

Plenty of senior travel planners will plan your trip and find others to join. A travel planning service will be more expensive since they handle all travel details. A senior travel planner will:

  • Offer a wide selection of cultural and adventure trips to suit any physical level. Many of these trips will be local and others international with varying lengths and expenses.
  • A travel planner will plan every detail, from flight itineraries, hotels, rental car arrangements, daytime activities, and the number of people on the trip.
  • Some travel planners will not only plan your trip but find a suitable companion for the one you want to take.
  • Travel planners will investigate all vaccination requirements and ensure you comply with local health laws.

Senior travel clubs

Senior travel clubs are groups of seniors who pay membership fees to the club and get vacation packages at bulk rates. Travel clubs specialize in everything from active adventures to academic and cultural trips. Of note are reports of scam travel clubs, so vet any travel club carefully to ensure they are legitimate.

Medical and transit companion

Many older travelers have medical problems, cognitive impairment, or mobility issues. In these cases, a senior can hire someone to travel with them to assist with the trip and care needs. Assistance can consist of:

  • Managing medications
  • Helping with bathing and dressing
  • Checking vital signs
  • Find health services at your destination.
  • Handling any durable medical equipment needs

The cost of a senior traveling companion depends entirely on the type of service you want and need. If you simply want to book through a tour agency that caters to seniors, you will pay your portion of the trip, and the other travelers will pay theirs. Most travel group plans offer a discount if you share a room. If you are going through a service to find traveling companions, there will be a membership fee to find compatible travel buddies.

For seniors who want to hire someone to accompany them on their travels, the cost will depend on the tasks required. ZipRecruiter esports that the average hourly pay for a travel companion in 2022 was $27.89 an hour. This hourly cost can be significantly higher if more assistance is needed, especially if a nurse accompanies you on a trip. You will also likely need to pay for all their trip costs, including airfare, meals, other transport, and tourist entrance fees.

Senior traveling companions can be a terrific option, but you will want to consider some additional details before taking the plunge. Let’s review some of the pros and cons of a traveling companion.

Pros of a senior traveling companion

  • The primary reason people choose a traveling companion through an agency is the convenience of paying someone else to do all the planning, which puts less stress on you. A senior traveling companion program can handle as many or as few travel details as you want.
  • The opportunity to meet new people and form friendships
  • Another benefit of a senior traveling companion is the safety and security of having a companion with you at all times.  Also, an itinerary tailored to your comfort level where there are few surprises can provide a sense of security to many travelers.
  • The assurance that someone will take care of your care needs.
  • A senior traveling companion allows you to explore destinations and things to do in retirement that you may not have considered before.

Cons of a senior traveling companion

A traveling companion is not for everyone, and it may not be possible even for those who prefer a companion. You may not find anyone you feel comfortable with, or the cost is too high.

  • The cost of a senior traveling companion can be prohibitive, especially if you need and want a companion to take care of your medical needs. Even in programs where everyone pays their costs, the pricing will be higher than if you planned the trip yourself. The do-it-yourself programs where you pay a fee to find a compatible traveling companion and do all the planning yourself are probably the most affordable.
  • The appeal of having everything organized for you is the very aspect of a traveling companion that some people don’t like. There could be a lack of travel flexibility. Many travelers prefer the unpredictability and spontaneous nature of unorganized travel. Finding themselves on a trip where they wish to change the itinerary is a downside for those folks.
  • The whole idea of a senior traveling companion is to have company on a trip and have someone to share the experience. But there is always the possibility of incompatibility, and you won’t find out until you are on your way. Sharing a room with a senior traveling companion is usually less expensive, but you give up privacy.
  • There is the possibility that you book an active travel trip that turns out to be too challenging. When you are with a group, you don’t have the option of scaling back the activity level.

Finding a senior traveling companion for you or your loved one could be lengthy, depending on what you are looking for. You may be surprised by all of the group travel options for seniors. If you or a loved one is looking for a companion that will provide more personal care as a senior travel companion, you will need to vet the company and the companion. Consider these questions:

  • What experience does the companion have, and on what types of trips?
  • Can you provide references for the specific companion that will come on the trip?
  • What are your safety protocols?
  • Are your companions CPR and first aid certified?
  • What insurance options are there through your company, and what does it cover?
  • How do you communicate with other family members during the trip?

If you are looking for travel companies, reviewing choices online might be best. One feature to consider is if you are looking for an “active” vacation which could entail hiking, biking, and walking. Most legitimate companies will have a guide to the activity level for each trip so you don’t overextend your physical capabilities.

Perhaps a river cruise or more extensive cruise is more up your alley. Or your interests may be more cultural or academic. Try and narrow your interests so you don’t waste time investigating companies that don’t offer what you want.

Other ideas for finding people locally to accompany you and others on trips are Meetup , senior centers, and Facebook. The other possibility is to reach out to friends who might have an interest in traveling together. If you find one or more people willing to travel and can agree on a place, a travel agent can make as many arrangements as you want.

A Senior Traveling Companion

A senior traveling companion can be a great way to access travel and adventure safely.  The key to a successful experience is to be open to a new travel companion while choosing your trip wisely. Accept that no trip or companion is perfect but that the journey will likely be one you will remember.
