Tour Information

The Surface Tour includes a guided tour of the grounds, the museum, a video tour of the #2 Shaft-Rock House, built in 1908 and used until 1931, and the Hoist Engine Building that houses the Nordberg Steam-powered hoist engine.  Our knowledgeable tour guides will explain about copper mining and answer your questions about the mining operation of the Quincy Mining Company.

The Underground Tour includes all of the above and also takes you on the cog-rail tramcar for a ride down the hill to the entrance at the 7th level of the mine. A tractor-pulled wagon will enter a large opening in the hill and take you into the underground mine where there are exhibits of mining tools and equipment.

If you wish to ride the tram down the hill, take photographs, and not tour the underground mine, this can be added to the Surface Tour.

* * * * * * * * *

Surface and Underground Tours include the following:

Quincy Shaft-Rock House #2 The #2 Shaft-Rock House will catch your eye as you drive towards Houghton and Hancock as it stands majestically on the top of the hill. Built in 1908, the mineshaft underneath the structure inclines into the earth for approximately 1.7 miles. Tour the shaft house through an interesting video presentation.

The Museum Located in the original 1894 #2 Hoist Building, the Museum contains many interesting exhibits and specimens on loan from the Seaman Mineralogical Museum. Be sure to see the 17-ton solid copper boulder recently recovered from Lake Superior.

Nordberg Steam Hoist The large Hoist Building houses the amazing Nordberg Steam Hoist, the world’s largest steam powered hoist engine. The building was one of the first very large reinforced concrete buildings with no interior supporting columns.

Cog Rail Tram Car

Quincy Mine Underground Tour When the tram arrives at the mine entrance, visitors will ride in a wagon pulled by a tractor about ½ mile straight into the side of the hill to Shaft #5 where you sill see early mine cars and learn how they worked. Your tour guide will explain how these miners extracted the copper from the rock walls.

2020 Ticket Prices

The Quincy Mining Company was a major copper producer in the late 1800's, ceased underground mining operations in 1945, and eventually stopped processing copper in 1967. There are no operating copper mines left in the Upper Peninsula so plan to stop and take a trip into the past when “Copper was King”. The mining complex once housed several copper mines and a variety of buildings.

Restoration Projects

The first phase of the restoration of the Historic Engine House for the Quincy and Torch Lake Railroad was completed in the fall of 2010. The building and the #2 maintenance pit have been restored. Hopefully all four service pits will be completed in the near future.

Locomotive #5 and Locomotive #1 (The Thomas Mason) of the Quincy & Torch Lake Railroad are on display behind the Hoist House. Locomotive #6 has recently been returned to the Quincy Mine and is waiting cosmetic restoration.

The Gift Shop and the grounds of the Quincy Mining Complex are open to visitors free of charge if you want to pick up a souvenir or walk abound the old mining complex. You will find a nice collection of items in the Gift Shop including mugs, jewelry, magnets, ornaments, plush animals, rocks & mineral samples, shirts, and videos. Books and maps are available to show how copper was mined and turned into ingots ready to ship to the lower Great Lakes.

Travel info, timber, iron ore & copper mines.

As you travel through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you may wonder what brought European immigrants to this vast, remote wilderness. It was the prospect of prosperity and wealth — cutting timber, going deep into the earth for iron, copper and some silver, too. It was a hard life for most, but as you walk past the Victorian mansions in Laurium or enter the ornate Calumet Theatre, there is no doubt some became immensely rich from the U.P.’s abundant natural resources.

Hear their stories and experience their lives in many places while you are here. It is worth staying for several days.

We Built America with Our Timber

Today, there are 8.8 million acres of pine and hardwood forests in the U.P. But when the British and French arrived, there were much, much more. These first European arrivals initially used the hardwoods to build forts, ships and other structures. But when waves of European and American loggers, sawyers and investors came in the mid-1800s, the towering white pines became prized trees.

Easy to work with and ship on the Great Lakes, the felled pines built a vast number of houses and buildings in the fast-growing Midwest. They were used to make the once-popular Ford woody wagons and KingsfordⓇ charcoal, too. Decades later, lumber trucks still rumble down U.P. highways, transporting freshly hewn logs to produce building lumber and paper in local mills.

Some of the U.P.’s most colorful characters were the shanty boys, timber barons and townspeople. Learn more about their stories, legendary feats and danger-filled lives at these locations:

Tahquamenon Logging Museum , Newberry. Hear about lumberjacks renowned for their grit and brawn. Explore the museum, park and Civil Conservation Corps buildings filled with memorabilia, photos, original logging equipment and more. Watch the Eastern U.P. Events page for the museum’s logging competitions, live demonstrations and Lumberjack Breakfasts (bring a voracious appetite).

Paul Bunyan Statues can be seen in two places. The legendary lumberman stands by Babe the Blue Ox at Castle Rock in St. Ignace . Or head to Manistique which claims to be the “Home of Paul Bunyan.” You can’t miss the 15-foot statue towering along US-2. Both sites are great photo opportunities.

Iron County Historical Museum , Caspian. It shares stories of lumbering and iron mining.

Michigamme Museum , Michigamme. Learn more about Henry Ford’s role in timber harvesting in the U.P. as well as see the “Anatomy of a Murder” display that gives you insight into the number-one bestseller and Academy-award-nominated film.

Ontonagon County Historical Museum , Ontonagon. A site in the Keweenaw National Historical Park, it features exhibits showcasing area logging, mining, farming, mariner history and other local historical memorabilia.

Listen to trees whisper memories in their natural settings

Estivant Pines Wilderness Nature Sanctuary, Copper Harbor. This is the largest tract of old-growth Eastern White Pines preserved in Michigan. It contains hundreds of trees that are 300-500-years-old, measuring anywhere from 3 to 5 feet in diameter! Walking among these historic giants is rivaled only by the Redwoods in California.

Log Slide , Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The actual log chute on the dune is gone, but you can stand where lumberjacks once slid logs into Lake Superior. Legend has it that the friction from the logs would catch the chute on fire. If you are tempted to go down to the shore below, remember, it’s a grueling climb up.

Historic Sign Walking Tour , St. Ignace. Stop by the “What’s in the water?” interpretive sign along Lake Huron. It explains what the dark debris is along the sandy shore. St. Ignace was a booming lumber and fishing town in the 1870s to mid-1900s.To keep the logs in place before sending them to the mills, they were chained together in the bay. As the waves rubbed the logs together, the bark sank to the bottom. It continues to wash ashore today.

U.P. Iron Ore and Copper Spurred the American Industrial Revolution

While timber was an economic boon to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the iron ore and copper rushes put this region on the international map. Pre-dating the California Gold Rush, thousands of prospectors poured into the Marquette, Gogebic and Menominee Iron Ranges and the copper-loaded Keweenaw Peninsula hoping to strike it rich. Bustling towns, iron smelting operations and shipping docks sprang up near these mines. More and more people in Europe and the Eastern U.S. heeded the cry to “Go West, young man” to the U.P. The iron ore and copper they mined built our railroads, bridges, skyscrapers, tools, utensils and Civil War, WWI and WWII weapons.

Iron Ore Mining and Smelting

No one tells about the hardships, dangers, joys and successes of iron ore and copper mining better than the people of the Upper Peninsula. Hear the stories and actually experience what being a miner was like. It’s enthralling.

Mining Tours and Trail

Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum

Iron Mountain Iron Mine , Iron Mountain. Guided tours take you 2,600 feet through drifts and tunnels to 400-feet below the earth’s surface. Be awed by the amazing rock formations in the large underground lighted caverns. At the end of your tour, enjoy a miner’s lunch, a traditional Cornish pasty.

Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum , Ishpeming. Take a guided tour of the tunnels that miners walked to the base of C-Shaft. Listen to what it was like to work the mine from people who did it. See historical displays of past and present headgear, safety equipment, blasting and drilling equipment. Take photos near a 170-ton iron ore truck with its 12-foot high tires or inside the 30-ton shovel bucket!

Iron Ore Heritage Trail , Republic to Chocolay. Follow this year-round, 47-mile, multi-use trail. It is designed for walkers, bikers, runners, inline skaters, wanderers, horseback riders, people in wheelchairs, snowmobilers and history buffs. The interpretive trail skirts the 18th- and 19th-century mining pits and hugs Lake Superior’s beautiful shoreline. Experience mining, nature and recreation along the way.

Mining Museums and Iron Smelting Townsites

Image of a smelter in the distance at Fayette Historic State Park, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, USA

Iron County Historical Museum , Caspian. Considered one of the best historical museums in Michigan, its 26 buildings, artifacts and memorabilia tell the stories of iron mining and lumbering.

Cornish Pump & Mining Museum , Iron Mountain. Learn about the Cornish Pumping Engine, the largest standing steam-driven pumping engine ever built in the United States. It is among the largest in the world! This engineering feat was used to dewater one of the wettest iron mines, Iron Mountain’s Chapin Mine.

Fayette Historic State Park & Townsite , Garden. If you have never turned off US-2 onto M-183, now is your chance. Drive 17 miles south along the Big Bay de Noc coast to Fayette Historic State Park & Townsite. A ghost of its former self, this was once a booming iron smelting town. Explore 20 buildings and informative displays in the Visitor Center, scuba dive in Snail Shell Harbor to see artifacts or hike, bike or cross-country ski the park’s 3.5 miles of scenic trails. To plan your visit around the park’s planned festivities, stay up-to-date on the Eastern Events page.

Menominee Range Historical Museum , Iron Mountain. Over 100 exhibits depict life on the Menominee Iron Range during the 19th to early 20th centuries. A country store, barbershop, doctor’s office, Victorian parlor, moonshine still and folding bathtub are among the historical things you will see.

Michigan Iron Industry Museum , Negaunee. This museum overlooking the Carp River is the site of the first iron forge in the Lake Superior region. It offers permanent and temporary exhibits, a video, Iron Spirits: Life on the Michigan Iron Range, plus interpretive outdoor paths.

Pasties , throughout the Upper Peninsula. At least one time during your U.P. vacation, eat like a hardrock miner. Cornish immigrants brought their hearty meat and root-vegetable pastry to the U.P. It is said that miners would carry their pasties deep into the earth and heat them in a tin bucket or on a shovel over candle fire. Now you can get a variety of flavors hot-and-ready from numerous shops. Choices range from traditional beef, rutabaga and potatoes to pizza, chicken pot pie, jalapeno or vegetarian. Most pasty makers serve ketchup, gravy, hot sauce or butter on the side.

Datolite Pile

1-2 adults  |  1.5 cubic yards  |   2-4 hours  |   $300

The datolite is one of the most challenging and most rewarding minerals to find! It can only be spotted with the naked eye and will not generate a beep on a metal detector. The nodule form often described as “cauliflower-shape” can only be found in the Upper Peninsula and some parts of northern WI. The beautiful specimen is ordinary on the outside and absolutely stunning on the inside. Here at the Caledonia, the most common colors are red, pink, and white. But the more exotic colors are blue, yellow, and green!

The rock in this pile is much finer, with a gravel-like consistency. Due to the increasing difficulty in the extraction process, we have increased the price on the pile.

We provide you with a screen and shovel to meticulously sort through the rock. Our experienced staff will help you get the hang of identifying the challenging datolite. We have the ability to cut and polish a shelf-worthy specimen, on hand! This is a cash-only service and dependent on the staff present.

Tools provided during the dig: shovel, screen, bucket, and running water.

About The Caledonia Mine

copper mine tours

A Proud Family Business

The Caledonia Mine is an underground, walk-in, copper mine, nearly a mile and half in length. The mine was opened in 1863, but only commercially operated until the mill burnt down in 1870. It changed hands privately over the years, with many attempts at mining. In 2013, Evergreen Explorations purchased the mine and currently offers the mine pile experience that you see today. This is a family-run business, started by the late Emanuel Manos. His 7 children carry on his dream by removing the ore, running piles and educational programs, and cutting and polishing the rock found inside the mine.

THANK YOU for your interest in the Caledonia Mine, we cannot wait to provide you a unique, rock-collecting experience!

This Eerie Abandoned Copper Mine In Michigan Will Give You Goosebumps

By: Author Savannah Walker

Posted on June 21, 2024

Venturing into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula , a region known for its stunning landscapes and rich history, you’ll find a hidden gem that’s both intriguing and eerie: the Quincy Mine in Hancock.

Known for its significant contribution to the copper industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries, this abandoned copper mine offers a unique glimpse into the past, complete with chilling tales.

Ready to discover what makes this destination so goosebump-worthy?

Quincy Mine 1

Quincy Mine, once a booming center of activity, now stands as a fascinating relic of the past.

The mine was established in 1846 and quickly became one of the most productive copper mines in the world.

As you step onto the grounds, you can almost feel the hustle and bustle of miners from centuries ago, their voices echoing through time.

The mine’s towering hoist house, which once housed the world’s largest steam hoist, is an imposing reminder of the industrial might that once existed here.

Quincy Mine 2

Exploring the Quincy Mine is like taking a time machine back to the glory days of copper mining.

The tours offer a fascinating glimpse into how copper was extracted and processed, with guides who are not only knowledgeable but also full of local charm and engaging stories.

They weave tales of the mine’s peak operation days, making the whole experience both educational and incredibly entertaining.

One of the highlights of the visit is the underground tour.

This part of the adventure is not for the faint-hearted.

Visitors descend into the depths of the mine, feeling the isolation and darkness that miners braved every day.

The chill in the air and the echo of footsteps make for an experience that’s palpably real.

The sense of history is almost eerie as if the walls themselves could tell stories.

Quincy Mine 3

But don’t worry, there are plenty of light-hearted moments too.

The guides have a knack for sprinkling humor into their narratives, helping to balance the gravity of the mine’s history with a friendly atmosphere.

It’s an adventure that makes history come alive in the most tangible and engaging way, leaving visitors with a deep appreciation for the miners’ hard work and resilience.

Venturing into this mine feels like stepping into another world.

The air is cool and damp, carrying a slight mustiness that tickles your nose.

Quincy Mine 4

Echoing through the tunnels, the steady drip of water creates an eerie soundtrack.

It’s perfect for those who enjoy a good ghost story, wouldn’t you say?

Legend has it that the spirits of miners who met their untimely ends still linger here.

Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, there’s no denying the spine-chilling vibe in these tunnels.

Dim lights cast long shadows, making every twist and turn feel like a scene from a suspense movie.

Quincy Mine 5

Each corner seems to hold a new mystery, begging to be uncovered.

You might find yourself wondering about the lives of those who worked here, their stories, and their struggles.

The mine has a haunting beauty, with its rugged walls and the occasional glint of minerals catching the light.

Even the bravest hearts might feel a shiver down their spine.

It’s the kind of place where history and legend blend seamlessly, creating an atmosphere rich with intrigue.

Whether for the thrill or the history, the mine offers an experience that’s both chilling and captivating.

Above ground, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association has preserved many of the original buildings and artifacts.

The old blacksmith shop, the engine house, and the miner’s house provide a glimpse into the daily lives of those who worked here.

The museum on site houses a collection of photographs, tools, and personal items that belonged to the miners, offering a poignant reminder of the human element behind the industrial facade.

Wandering through these exhibits, you gain a deeper appreciation for the hard work and determination that fueled the mine’s success.

Quincy Mine 6

But the Quincy Mine is not just about the past.

The site has been transformed into a cultural hub that hosts various events throughout the year.

If you’re planning a visit, be sure to check out the seasonal events hosted at the mine.

The combination of historical exploration and outdoor adventure makes the Quincy Mine a year-round destination.

From a haunted mine experience to winter tours, there’s always something happening that keeps the spirit of the mine alive.

The picturesque setting makes it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The panoramic views from the top of the mine are simply breathtaking, providing a stark contrast to the dark tunnels below.

Quincy Mine 7

Visiting Quincy Mine is like stepping into a time capsule.

The preservation efforts have ensured that the site remains as authentic as possible, allowing visitors to experience it much as it was during its operational days.

The sense of history is palpable, and it’s easy to lose yourself in the stories of the past.

The combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and a touch of the supernatural makes it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Michigan.

For those interested in the technical aspects of mining, the Quincy Mine also offers a wealth of information.

The mine’s steam hoist, which was the most powerful in the world when it was built, is a marvel of engineering.

Seeing this massive piece of machinery up close is a reminder of the ingenuity and innovation that characterized the Industrial Age.

Quincy Mine 8

The Quincy Mine Hoist Association has done an excellent job of maintaining these historical artifacts, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and learn from them.

No visit to the Quincy Mine would be complete without a stop at the gift shop.

Here, you can pick up unique souvenirs, including copper jewelry and locally made crafts.

The shop also carries a selection of books and educational materials about the history of mining in the region.

It’s a great way to take a piece of the Quincy Mine experience home with you.

Dozens Get Stuck Underground During Coal Mine Tour

Dozens of people were rescued from a coal mine in Pennsylvania on Monday after getting stuck underground during a tour.

On Monday, during a tour of the Lackawanna Coal Mine, located in McDade Park in Scranton, over 50 people were rescued after getting stuck several hundred feet below ground. According to The Scranton Times-Tribune , county communications director Pat McKenna said there was a mechanical issue with the rail car, which brought it to a halt, causing the evacuation.

Tour participants were brought up to the surface in groups of three or four using emergency escape cages that were already set up at the site. No injuries were reported.

Newsweek has reached out to McKenna's office and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour via email for comment.

Mine foreman Edmund Neidlinger, who controlled the winch that lifted the emergency cage up and down, told local news station WNEP that it took about two hours to bring everyone to safety.

"People respected what we had to do. A lot of the kids had fun; they want to go back down and do it again, Neidlinger said.

Neidlinger, who has been working at the mine for eight years, said he never had to use the emergency escape, adding that the last time it was used was over a decade ago when a car also had an issue.

"It was about 15 years ago that they broke an axle on the car, and they had to use it the last time. I'm here eight years and never had to use it," he told the news station.

According to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour's website, participants travel 300 feet beneath the earth's surface to the once abandoned and now restored hard coal mine in an effort to see the area's workers that powered the Industrial Revolution.

The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour will be closed to the public pending repairs, as mine operators say they will determine what caused the mechanical issue.

In early April, six miners were rescued after being stranded by Taiwan's most powerful earthquake in a quarter century, while 64 of their co-workers still awaited assistance.

The miners, who had been working in a quarry in eastern Taiwan 's Hualien County, were rescued three at a time via helicopter after being trapped for nearly 24 hours in the Zhonghe Mine Heren Mining area.

A 7.2 magnitude quake in Hualien City struck a day earlier, killing nine people and injuring at least 1,050 more.

A major copper miner thinks it's got a way to turbocharge output without having to open new mines

  • Freeport-McMoRan is using technology to boost copper production without opening new mines.
  • This will help it add 800 million pounds annually within three to five years, CEO Kathleen Quirk told Bloomberg.
  • It shows how mining firms are looking to boost output amid the copper shortage.

Insider Today

A US mining giant has plans to scale up its copper production by as much as 800 million pounds yearly, equivalent to the output of an entire mine — but instead of opening a new site, the firm will achieve that output with new processing technology to allow it to mine copper it couldn't previously get to.

That's according to Freeport-McMoRan CEO Kathleen Quirk, who told Bloomberg that the initiative is necessary as copper supply grows more strained.

"I'm really focused on this issue, because when we look around, we know how hard it is to develop new supply," the newly-appointed executive told the outlet. "You think about 800 million pounds of copper a year — that's the size of a big mine. That's meaningful. Our team is working very aggressively to get that done."

It's part of a broader scramble to boost inventory, as demand for the industrial metal has gained tremendously in recent years. Yet, while green policy and artificial intelligence infrastructure have boosted the need for copper, there isn't enough supply to meet this.

The shortage is made worse by the lackluster mining environment, with new and existing projects often stalled.

The supply-demand imbalance that's created has supercharged prices, with copper peaking over $11,000 a ton in May. Bullish analysts believe this is just a start, and forecast future highs as far up as $15,000 a ton .

"We've been seeing this coming," Quirk told CNBC in a separate interview. "So we've been focused on how are we going to grow our production and we're doing that now."

According to former CEO Richard Adkerson, the firm's bullish bet on copper started 20 years ago, though the original excitement centered on China's economic rise. Given the fresh momentum, markets are entering a "new era of copper demand," he said on CNBC.

To take advantage of that, Freeport has been forced to become more innovative, Quirk told Bloomberg. Currently, the new recovery process already is producing 200 million pounds more of copper a year, and should add another 200 million pounds in the next two years.

800 million pounds will be extracted over the next three to five years, the outlet said.

The focus on technology is a move away from the strategy other mining firms are using to boost production: mergers and acquisitions. Last month, BHP gave up on a $49 billion bid to take over Anglo American, which would mark the largest mining deal in over a decade.
