Business Travel Management, Platform, Software And Technology

Business Travel Platform

Business travel platform solutions

Follow a leader. One platform. One solution for all your corporate travel needs.

Travel Technology Pioneer

Travel technology pioneer

Egencia pioneered the way every digital travel management company (TMC) operates. Our technological innovations deliver solutions for business travelers and travel in a familiar and user-friendly way.

We deliver you the best corporate travel experience by continuously innovating the ways corporate travel can work for you. We do this by capitalizing on:

  • A network of suppliers that goes beyond air, rail, car and hotels — and caters to the in-between moments of business travel (lounges, Wi-Fi, destination information).
  • Business travel software that supports your travel program and helps you save time managing expense reporting.
  • Predictive analytics that deliver the best travel options to you and your travelers.
  • Customer support bolstered by artificial intelligence.
  • An omni-channel platform that works like you do — start booking a trip on one device and complete it later on another.

Savings and analytics

Stop spending hours consolidating data from multiple spreadsheets. We do the hard work for you and centralize your travel program data — online and offline — on our platform so that you can easily access it in one place.

This robust solution delivers data insights that come directly from our platform. Instead of relying on multiple third-party tools, our centralized approach allows you to save time by viewing dynamic visual reports on how your travel program is performing and helps you find savings opportunities .

Savings and analytics

Expert support

We have over 2,500 business travel consultants who provide support to travelers, arrangers and travel managers around the world, 24/7/365 .

Our agents use our platform to see what you see in order to help you and your travelers on any step of the journey. Agents recognize every traveler when they call to give them the service they deserve.

Egencia mobile app

Our industry leading mobile technology delivers robust features to every user: Travelers, approvers, arrangers and travel managers. We’re always updating and improving our app to deliver the best booking, itinerary and alerts for travelers and offer mobile-only features like special hotel rates and ground transport options.

Travel managers and arrangers have visibility into travelers’ bookings to manage itineraries on the go and can approve or reject trips with just two taps in the app, or they can monitor and track travelers across the globe with Traveler Tracker.

Egencia Mobile App

Policy and approval

We make managing your travel policy and travel approval easy by quickly viewing your travelers’ itineraries across every booking channel. Your company’s travel policy and approval process is also visible, automated, and integrated into the platform so that however your travelers book their travel, there are intuitive, visual guidelines to help them stay compliant.

The Egencia solution allowed Nasdaq’s travel manager to support the new corporate travel policy and easily guide travelers to in-policy choices when booking. The ability to adjust policy levers as needed allowed them to quickly react to trends and cost savings opportunities. They also introduced a pre-trip approval process.

Traveller risk management

Travel security risks, from disruptive weather patterns, worker strikes or political events, exist everywhere and can happen at any time. This highlights the importance our customers have for a travel risk management solution that provides up-to-date news, clear and concise communication, traveler tracking, as well as medical and security assistance services.

Travel to some destinations may represent an unacceptable risk for your company and you can restrict travel as needed. We provide travel managers with daily alerts and flag any disruptive events by sending special alerts that include a list of impacted travelers. Travel managers can also pull a list of travelers from Travel Tracker when an emergency arises, online or in the app.

For clients that need a higher level of support when it comes to travel risk management, we also partner with a number of risk management providers.

Traveler risk management

Supplier network

Our expansive inventory is built on a broad network of global distribution system (GDS) aggregators for low-cost content, rail providers and hotel inventory options. This approach is fundamental to what our customers want: Choice with local, relevant travel options across the globe.

When it comes to booking travel having a massive inventory is great, but when you serve corporate customers, we know that offering relevant, preferred rates as quickly as possible is paramount in reducing the time spent booking.

With more than 500,000 hotels in our inventory, we offer Egencia Preferred Rates for more than 35,000 hotels and include amenities such as breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking, all negotiated exclusively for business travelers. We also recognize the Top 100 Preferred Corporate Hotel awards , an annual program that recognizes the top customer-focused hotels around the globe.

Beyond hotels, we’ve spent the last 20 years cultivating supplier relationships that span the entire travel experience, and our suppliers cover more than 30,000 cities in over 200 countries.

14 best business travel backpacks for every budget

Zach Griff

If you travel regularly for work, you won't need us to tell you that a good travel backpack is essential. That's especially true if a backpack can double as a decently sized carry-on luggage item while still housing your laptop in an easily accessible compartment.

We looked at some of the best (and most stylish) backpacks out there to take the hassle out of searching for the best item.

Without further ado, here are the best business travel backpacks that maximize form and function across various budgets.

Amazon Basics Laptop Backpack, $33.47

corporate travel bookers

If you don't want to break the bank, the Amazon Basics range offers a reliable and, dare we say, fairly stylish backpack for less than $40.

The bag has a dedicated (and padded) laptop sleeve that can easily hold a laptop up to 17 inches in size; it has additional compartments for pens, keys, cellphones and other items.

There's also a water bottle pocket on both sides of the bag for easy access when you're on the go.

Buy from $33.47

Lenovo Legion Gaming Laptop Bag, $55.19 (normally $79.99)

corporate travel bookers

Admittedly, we've never seen Batman carry a backpack, but if he did, we're pretty sure it'd look something like this robust bag by Lenovo. It has a 20-liter capacity and room for a 16-inch laptop, alongside seven inside pockets to suit all your work travel needs — including a hidden compartment for valuables.

Built for carrying electronic items, the bag features foam antishock bumpers on the corners of the laptop compartment for extra protection against bag drops and other jolts.

There's also a high-quality magnetic lock to keep your items safe.

Buy from $55.19 (normally $79.99)

Tangcorle Travel Carry On Backpack, $58.90

corporate travel bookers

Part backpack and part carry-on suitcase, this bag has an expandable design. This means it has a capacity of 36 to 50 liters and should easily fit the maximum carry-on size for most airlines.

Other features include an external USB port with a built-in charging cable, allowing you to attach your own power bank and keep your devices charged while on the go.

The main compartment is similar to one in an ordinary carry-on suitcase and can easily store five to seven days' worth of clothes, depending on how you like to pack. It is perfect for long weekends and short business trips.

Buy from $58.90

Samsonite Novex Laptop Backpack, $69.99 (normally $99.99)

corporate travel bookers

If you are shopping for a travel backpack from a reliable brand with a more down-to-earth budget, this Samsonite bestseller has a lot going for it.

Despite its price, the Novex Laptop Backpack doesn't compromise on the basics. The separate laptop and tablet pocket features a special webbing system that provides extra durability in case you drop the backpack. Plus, thanks to the special supportive lining on the top front pocket, you won't have to worry about misplacing your headphones, glasses or cellphone.

The main storage compartment has room for all the essentials, though you may not find it large enough for a full change of clothes or a pair of shoes.

Buy from $69.99 (normally $99.99)

The North Face Recon Everyday Laptop Backpack, $109

corporate travel bookers

A modern classic, the Recon Everyday Laptop Backpack is a popular, on-trend design you'll frequently see on the backs of young professionals in buzzy city centers.

The backpack has two external water bottle holders and a main compartment capable of carrying up to 30 liters. Its laptop sleeve is also sizable and should easily hold machines up to 18 inches.

Perhaps its most interesting feature is the comfortable design of its shoulder straps, which are certified by the American Chiropractic Association.

Buy from $109

Ogio Renegade Backpack, $128.24 (normally $149.99)

corporate travel bookers

If you're looking for the bag with the most pockets, this might be it. Ogio's flagship backpack has dedicated space for everything (laptop and iPad included) and then some. With a phone pocket, two zippered side pockets and five main pockets, you might just get lost looking around for your gear.

No matter how full you stuff this nearly 30-liter backpack, you shouldn't have much of a problem carrying it around, thanks to its supportive padded back panel and shoulder straps. This makes it easy to lug it around the airport or corporate campus.

Buy from $128.24 (normally $149.99)

Incase ARC Daypack, $129.95

corporate travel bookers

Apple aficionados will no doubt be familiar with Incase, a popular brand of cases and protection solutions for iPhones, iPads and Macs.

The laptop pocket is big enough for a 16-inch computer, and it's lined in faux fur for additional protection. Its travel tech compartment also includes RFID-blocking technology, preventing thieves from stealing your digital information.

A water- and stain-resistant coating, two dedicated water bottle holders, and a pass-through system for rollaboard bags make this the ideal bag for anyone going from the gym to the office to the airport. If you need something bigger, Incase also makes a larger A.R.C. travel pack.

Need more convincing? Both bags are made from a sustainable mixture of recycled polyester, giving the company its A.R.C. acronym, which stands for "a responsible carry."

Buy from $129.95

Aer Pro Pack 20L, $179

corporate travel bookers

As far as business travel backpacks go, Aer's is certainly quite stylish. It comes in three colors (black, navy and olive), and it's made of sustainable materials without compromising on durability. A separate laptop compartment safeguards your most precious technology, while the main compartment is large enough for all your chargers and other travel accessories.

The standout feature is the main compartment's 180-degree flat-open zipper system, giving you unobstructed access to all your belongings.

There's even a hidden pocket to store an AirTag or other tracker so that you can locate your bag even if it's stolen or misplaced.

Buy from $179

Away The Everywhere Zip Backpack, $195

corporate travel bookers

Made with water-resistant nylon, the Everywhere backpack by Away has a full wraparound zip that provides access to the main compartment. Not only can you fit more things in an orderly fashion, but you'll also be able to easily see your things when you need to retrieve them from the backpack.

Alongside the main compartment, the bag also houses a 15-inch laptop pocket with a magnetic locking zipper and padded shoulder straps for comfort. It's available in five colors — including the limited-edition garnet colorway.

Buy from $195

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack, $209

corporate travel bookers

The Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack has space for everything and then some. The padded rear pocket is the perfect spot for a laptop, so you won't have to dig through the main compartment to find your computer.

The main compartment is spacious and can expand by nearly 3 liters, giving you more room for your belongings. Plus, the front pocket has a dedicated organizer with multiple pockets, so you'll never forget where you put your passport, charger and cables.

Buy from $209

Nomatic 20L Backpack, $279.99

corporate travel bookers

Although you may not have heard of Nomatic, this brand receives rave reviews from its loyalists. The company's bestselling backpack comes in two sizes: 14 liters and 20 liters. Both are expandable by nearly 20%.

The flat rectangular design may be controversial at first glance, but at least you can't complain about finding space for all of your gizmos. The bag has a staggering 24 unique storage compartments, ranging from enclosed pockets to mesh nets. It's a great bag for those who like to stay extremely organized when they're on the road.

Buy from $279.99

Briggs & Riley Traveler Backpack, $329

Millennials and Gen Zers want human connection, so they're choosing travel tours with strangers to cure their loneliness

  • Intrepid Travel said young people are seeking immersive, non-traditional vacation experiences.
  • Millennials share more travel similarities with Gen Z travelers than previous generations.
  • Young travelers are prioritizing interest-based travel over destination-based travel.

Insider Today

Young people are seeking more human connection in the post-lockdown era, so they're embracing small-group travel.

Modern technology and social media apps have created a hyper-connected world, but many millennials and Gen Zers say the focus on screens has caused an epidemic of loneliness .

While New apps and local community groups are trying to address this "social distance" problem, some young people are choosing to book their vacations with strangers to find more face-to-face camaraderie.

Intrepid Travel, which organizes small-group experiences in over 100 countries, including Morocco and Sri Lanka, says it's seen a growing interest from young people in these kinds of group tours.

"They're prioritizing travel over buying houses, mortgages, and other expenses," Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's president of the Americas, told Business Insider.

Group travel can be hit-or-miss with people. They can conjure an image of 40-plus tourists being led off a bus to an overcrowded attraction by their shouting tour guide.

But Berna said Intrepid Travel's focus on small group experiences is the opposite. The average Intrepid Travel group has 10 people.

"It allows us to travel like locals," Berna said. "We eat in small local restaurants. We stay in family-owned hotels. We typically avoid mass market tourism, hotels, or experiences."

It also allows people to form new bonds in a tight-knit setting, which young travelers crave, after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Camaraderie in a group is so special because you make great friendships and share laughs and stories," Berna said.

Related stories

Berna said these unique experiences are popular with 18 to 29-year-olds — Intrepid Travel's core audience. Experiences are designed with young travelers in mind, offering more free time to explore on their own and more active outings.

Berna said Intrepid Travel began receiving requests from people in their 30s looking for adventures off the beaten path. Millennials traditionally valued experience-driven opportunities , and that desire hasn't waned with time.

"It became clear that millennials are aging, but the style they want to travel is immersive," Berna said. "If anything, they resonated more with Gen Z than the generations above them."

American Express Travel's 2023 Global Travel Trends Report found nearly 80% of millennials and Gen Zers respondents said they want to "partake in a day in the life of locals in the destination they are visiting," pointing toward activities like visiting local cultural sites and "hole-in-the-wall" attractions.

Airbnb, owned by millennial billionaire Brian Chesky , reported in 2020 that it also found that "immersive encounters" were becoming more popular with this generation, with interest up 102% year-to-year.

Older generations, Berna said, book vacations based on destination. Older travelers tend to plan vacations around conventional tourist spots — think the Eiffel Tower in Paris — because it's popular.

However, younger travelers don't have the same sense of FOMO — or "the fear of missing out" — that their parents do. Instead, they book vacations by interest.

At Intrepid Travel, that includes cycling enthusiasts traveling to Vietnam to peddle through the local sites. Experiences based on camping, festivals, and food are also options travelers can explore.

"They want to be a trendsetter going to the next cool place," Berna said. "It will be something new you can share with your friends, so you get the bragging rights. It's a bit more adventurous instead of following the crowd."

After conducting consumer research among its more than 300,000 travelers, Intrepid Travel formally expanded the young trip age range to 35 in February.

"Intrepid identified an opportunity to better cater for an expanded age range after experiencing a rise in inquiries from travelers in their early 30s wanting to join Intrepid's young adult trips," a press release said. "The company conducted extensive consumer research which showed that most travelers aged 18 to 35 prefer to travel with those of a similar age."

As for where travelers are going, Berna said South America has emerged as a top contender, with Peru gaining traction. The country closed its tourist attractions amid political unrest from late 2022 to early 2023, but they reopened in February 2023, according to Travel Weekly .

Another top spot is South Korea, which Berna said is typically more affordable than Japan. Intrepid Travel said they saw 172% increase globally in bookings to South Korea from 2022 to 2023.

"People want to go away and have these stories. They've settled back post-pandemic into feeling life, wanting to travel again, and seeking connection," Berna said. "Not just with other travelers in groups but with destinations."

Chase Travel Is Growing as Fast as Booking Holdings But Faces ‘Headwinds’

Dennis Schaal , Skift

May 23rd, 2024 at 4:38 PM EDT

If a soft economy is causing luxury travelers to limit their discretionary spending, that's sour news for Chase Travel in the short term. But over the long term, Chase Travel and some of its banking peers are trending upwards in travel.

Dennis Schaal

Chase Travel grew sales last year at a pace on par with Booking Holdings and far ahead of Expedia Group.

Still, Chase Travel is a fraction of their size and it’s been around only a few years – it launched its new brand identity just this year.

And it reported at its annual investor day earlier this week that “macro travel headwinds” were impacting its profit margins. Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, meanwhile, said he saw “resiliency in global leisure travel demand” in the first quarter.

Chase Travel, which skews toward travelers looking for premium trips, is seeing softness among luxury-oriented travelers. Marianne Lake, CEO of Consumer & Community Banking, which includes travel, told investors that “higher income segments are showing lower growth with slowing discretionary spend, including in travel and luxury retail.”

What the Numbers Say

Chase Travel, a division of JPMorgan Chase, said its aim is to attract new customers and to gain share from competitors, which in the case of Booking Holdings and Expedia, have been around for decades.

Let’s look at the latest gross bookings numbers, which is the total amount of travel sold, not revenue, at Chase Travel compared to Booking and Expedia.

2023 Gross Bookings and Percentage Increase

Source: Company filings/Skift

Chase Travel grew its gross bookings 25% year-over-year in 2023, edging out Booking Holdings at 24%.

Expedia Group, which was putting the finishing touches on rolling its Vrbo vacation rental unit onto a common Expedia-Hotels.com tech platform last year, lagged with growth at just 10%.

Chase Travel, of course, should be growing faster given that it’s essentially a travel startup. It was just 6.6% the size of Booking Holdings in gross bookings in 2023, and 9.6% the size of Expedia Group. It’s notable that Booking grew at a similar pace.

In addition, Expedia supplies a major portion of Chase Travel’s hotel supply. So gross bookings growth at Chase Travel is good news for Expedia Group — unless a chunk of Chase Travel’s customers would have otherwise booked at Expedia.

At JPMorgan’s investor day a year ago, the company said Chase Travel was on track to do $10 billion in sales in 2023, which it achieved, and $15 billion in 2025. Chase didn’t explicitly reiterate that $15 billion target for its travel business this week. However, it may be folded into a $30 billion target for all of its commerce platforms that Chase articulated a few days ago.

What Else Did Chase Travel Do in 2023 and 2024?

Along with the official launch of Chase Travel in 2024, it ran its first national multimedia brand campaign, Where Travelers Go . [You can also view the ad below.]

The company now has six airport lounges — Expedia and Booking have none — including two it opened this year at LaGuardia and JFK. Six more are in the pipeline.

Chase Travel offers more than 350,000 hotels, and last year it launched a premium hotel collection called The Edit, which now has 800 properties.

In late 2023, it began enabling cardholders to book Southwest’s leisure fares with points or cash — and that’s something that no other credit card companies or online travel agencies have announced they can do. Google Flights began displaying Southwest’s flights for the first time this week. Southwest is one of the largest domestic airlines in the U.S.

Among other data points that Chase Travel released this week:

  • Its bookings increased 12% in the first quarter year over year;
  • Chase Travel attracted 3.5 million unique customers, a 19% jump, and they booked 9 million trips in 2023.

American Airlines Admits Business Travel Misfire; Shares Drop

A merican Airlines is backing away from a strategy that Chief Executive Robert Isom said drove away lucrative corporate customers and dragged down the airline’s revenue.

American had bet that a slowdown in business travel following the Covid-19 pandemic would help it push dramatic changes in its relationships with corporate customers. The airline last year slashed its sales staff and removed some fares from the channels that big companies tend to use, aiming to coax more travelers to book directly on American’s website or app.

It didn’t work. While rivals at Delta Air Lines and United Airlines said they have been buoyed as companies sent employees back out on the road this year, with roughly 14% increases in corporate travel revenue in the first quarter, American said it hadn’t seen the same boost and had lost business to rivals.

“We can never be difficult to do business with,” Isom said Wednesday in an investor presentation. “Others are benefiting from what we’ve done over the last six months or so. We’ll get that back.”

American’s shares tumbled 13.5% Wednesday, the stock’s largest single-day drop-off since June 2020, when the pandemic had ravaged travel demand.

Isom’s mea culpa came a day after the carrier cut its second quarter profit forecast, flagging weaker than expected revenue. American also said that it would part ways with Vasu Raja, the executive behind the airline’s effort to revamp the way many customers did business with the airline.

Raja, who became American’s chief commercial officer in 2022 and who has been with the airline for two decades, has been “an innovator,” Isom said. “But sometimes we need a reset.”

At the time when American began considering a new approach to corporate bookings, big companies weren’t sending employees out on the road as much as they once had. Raja and other executives believed it no longer made sense to spend millions of dollars on travel agency commissions and wooing corporations with perks and discounts.

American saw direct bookings as a win-win. Customers could avoid the patchwork of intermediaries and pre-internet-era workarounds that can be a frustrating hallmark of corporate bookings. Any business traveler who had been stuck on hold waiting for an agent to manually change a flight would immediately see the benefit, the airline reasoned.

The changes helped reduce expenses for American, and the airline said customers using its channels were much more likely to buy up to a more expensive offering.

In April, Isom said that the carrier would likely have to do some fine-tuning as other airlines benefited from the business travel rebound. American in recent weeks hired consulting firm Bain & Co. to evaluate the strategy, according to people familiar with the matter.

Isom said Wednesday that the moves ended up alienating travel agencies and corporate customers who are among the airline’s highest spending.

Isom said American will swiftly modify its strategy, making it less punishing for travel agencies that have struggled to keep up with the pace of change.

The company is calling off a plan to restrict frequent flier mile awards to bookings made on its own website and other “preferred” agencies. Instead of removing fares from old booking channels, American will look to add more incentives to promote adoption of modern booking technology.

“To the degree our approach has driven customers away from American, we are unequivocally committed to getting those customers back,” Isom said.

Stephen Johnson, another longtime American executive who serves as vice chair and chief strategy officer, will take over the commercial side of the business and lead a search for Raja’s replacement, the company said Tuesday. Raja didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Shares of other airlines also sold off Wednesday as investors worried that some of American’s problems point to faltering demand heading into what is traditionally airlines’ biggest moneymaking season.

Isom said that there are too many seats flying in the U.S. market, which has resulted in weaker prices. American plans to slow its growth in the second half of the year to bring capacity in line with demand. Other domestic-focused airlines have faced similar challenges and have had to throttle back.

After American’s announcement Tuesday evening, United swiftly followed with its own release, saying that its forecast for adjusted profit of $3.75 to $4.25 per share in the second quarter hadn’t changed.
