Carnival cruise ship battered by waves in storm off Charleston
By Aliza Chasan
Updated on: May 29, 2023 / 4:16 PM EDT / CBS News
A storm off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, battered a Carnival cruise ship for hours late Friday night before it docked, leaving passengers terrified.
Passengers aboard the Carnival Sunshine described shattered glass, water pouring into rooms and hallways, the ship pitching about and a lack of communication from cruise staff. Some passengers and crew members needed "minor assistance" from medical staff, a Carnival cruise spokesman told CBS News. "Guests on board the ship were safe," the spokesman added.
Carnival Sunshine, which was headed from the Bahamas to South Carolina, arrived in Charleston behind schedule, according to the spokesman. Some crew cabins needed to be temporarily taken out of service because of water damage. The ship's next voyage, on which it has since embarked, was also delayed.
The National Hurricane Center on Friday warned of a non-tropical area of low pressure off Florida that was set to move northward and inland over the Carolinas during the weekend. Forecasters said there would be gusty winds, dangerous surf and rip current conditions along portions of the U.S.'s southeastern coast through Sunday.

Passenger Sharon Tutrone, a professor at Coastal Carolina University, tweeted Friday that the ship was rocking. She said that the only time passengers heard from the captain was in the afternoon, when he told them he had an experienced crew and would do everything he could to minimize discomfort as the ship encountered the storm.
"They said it will get worse as we get closer to the storm," she tweeted. "@CarnivalCruise is doing an EXCELLENT job!"
She tweeted again on Saturday afternoon, describing " 14 hours of high winds, rain and massive waves ."
"We were surrounded by lightning and the ship took a huge hit by a wave and sounded like it split in two," Tutrone tweeted.
Several passengers, including Brenda Goodwin Sherbert, posted on social media about broken glass on the ship . They also wrote about water coming in through balcony doors.
"We had a 40 foot wave hit our side of the ship,.. we almost fell out the bed.. things were crashing all around us and the carpet on my side of the bed was soaked bc water came in thru our balcony door," Goodwin Sherbert wrote.
Passenger Reid Overcash, who was on the cruise with his wife, said televisions on the ship displayed a message during the storm: "Public address announcement please standby."
He said it was when winds had reached between 70-90 mph and the ship was tilting left that he truly feared for his life.
"Myself being in emergency services and retired, I knew nobody was going to come and rescue us with winds over 40 knots," Overcash said.
The trip marked Overcash's seventh cruise. He said he's not going to let the frightening experience stop him from going on more cruises in the future.
"It's just one of them unlucky experiences that occurs once in a while," he said.

WATCH: Cruise Passengers Share Terrifying Videos from 'Nightmare' Storm at Sea
The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port safely on Saturday after being stuck in a storm between the Bahamas and Charleston, S.C. for 15 hours
![cruise boat in storm cruise boat in storm](https://people.com/thmb/fbUEZBAUjn89Gl-2Pug8vvwIDaM=/75x75/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/IMG_4694-f4af0104c89e489f93f7783c51c06110.jpg)
The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port nine hours later than planned after sailing through a terrifying storm on Friday night.
The ship was on its way to Charleston, S.C. from the Bahamas when it got caught in severe weather, including nearly 80 mph winds. Passengers on board shared details and footage of the chaos and destruction caused by the storm on social media. Thankfully, Carnival told PEOPLE in a statement provided below that "no one was seriously injured."
Crew Center, a cruise ship information site, posted a video on Twitter showing a flooded hallway, torn-off doors and other debris and destruction on board.
"The aftermath aboard Carnival Sunshine after a severe storm," the post read. "The crew from Deck 0-4 evacuated to the theater, and anywhere they could rest… the crew bar destroyed."

Passenger Daniel Taylor told Newsweek that the captain made an announcement around 4:45 p.m. saying that they would be experiencing a delay due to "adverse weather conditions," expressing that they "would do everything they could to minimize discomfort.
By dinner time, public decks had been closed off, and plates and cups were flying off the buffet areas, he recalled.
By the early hours of Saturday morning, he said, "We were no longer able to see where we were going, how fast we were going, what the wind speed was, or anything. We were blind to what was going on." Swells were hitting the ship "over and over," said Taylor, who also recalled seeing crew members wearing life vests.
At that point, the internet was also out, so those on board couldn't get any additional information or reach loved ones.
Matthew Branham, who was also on board, told The Washington Post , that "waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor."
TVs were falling off walls and glasses shattering. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed."
Another passenger, RJ Whited, wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post cited by Newsweek , "Our cruise ship last night was literally sideways and slung everything in our room breaking, people in the hallways throwing up and sleeping on the stairs."
Added Whited, "We also found out that they knew about the storm and instead of us staying back to ride it out a few hours they hit it head-on so we could make it back for the other cruise to be on time."
Finally, the ship made it back to Charleston around 7:30 a.m., though it couldn't immediately dock due to continuing rough weather.
At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the ship was able to dock.
Summing up the "nightmare" experience, passenger Christa Seifert-Alicea told NBC News 4 : "What we endured is indescribable, not only to feel it yourself but to hear and see it set in on every single person around you from adult, child and the elderly is something I will never forget."
In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Carnival said: "Carnival Sunshine's return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. The weather's prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship's arrival and as a result, the next voyage's embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests." The statement claims that "the ship's crew followed our protocols for rough weather" noting, "thankfully, no one was seriously injured."
"The weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecasted," the statement continues. "Given the circumstances as they were, the ship's officers and our Fleet Operations Center team using real time meteorology data coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location. Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous. The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear." The cruise line's statement also said that the captain "made several announcements about the weather and the delay" but noted "some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made."
The Carnival Sunshine is already on its next voyage, the cruise line confirmed.

Dramatic video captured the moment panicked passengers ran for their lives aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship hit by a freak storm — which sent deck furniture flying as the vessel prepared to leave a Florida port.
The Independence of the Seas was about to embark on a voyage from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas about 4 p.m. June 16 when heavy rain and violent winds slammed the 15-deck, 1,112-foot-long vessel.
“Just a fun evening leaving Port Canaveral this past Friday. No announcement from the captain before or after, also no mention of what happened. Just pretend like it didn’t happen I guess,” TikTok user Lucassparrow1110 posted .
Sparrow also posted harrowing footage on Twitter of chairs and umbrellas flying on the ship as screaming passengers seek cover from the storm — and several people are seen sliding across a windswept walkway.
“Instead of telling people to come up to the top deck when we have a severe thunderstorm warning, maybe you should be more worried about your guests and employees and tell them to get inside,” he wrote.

Jenn Stancil, who captured footage of the storm moving in, told Fox 35 Orlando : “It just turned crazy. It looked like a scene from the movie ‘Twister’ is exactly what I thought, because you see these chairs flying up in the air.”
Jerry Pike, a local photographer who was sitting in his vehicle in Jetty Park during the outburst, also posted video of the storm.
“This is my view of Independence of the Seas as she started to get battered by the heavy winds whilst mid-spin attempting to turn around to leave the port,” Pike said in a tweet .

“You can see the rain line pushing towards us, and the Indy was completely gone from view due to the rain shortly after this,” he added.
A meteorologist for Fox 35 reported that winds reached from 55 to 60 mph at the height of the storm.
“The Independence was just getting battered by winds as it was trying to push off the dock,” Pike told Insider . “Then [it] was covered by the gray cloud of rain and we couldn’t see more than 20 yards out the window.”

Kyleigh Cole, an agent with Boardwalk Travel Agency, expressed concerns about how Royal Caribbean handled the incident.
“There’s always something you can do, other than just letting the guests and the travelers getting poured on, rained down on and being in the middle of a storm,” Cole told Fox 35 .
“This could have ruined somebody’s cruise experience where they’ll never take another cruise again,” the travel agent added.
In a statement sent to the news outlet, the company said the “Independence of the seas encountered a sudden gust of high winds. This lasted for a brief period and there were no serious injuries to our guests or crew…”
The ship reportedly arrived safely at Coco Cay, an island used by Royal Caribbean about 55 miles north of Nassau.

Cruise ship passengers left terrified after ship sails through rough seas on return to Charleston
- Copy Link copied
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A cruise ship that navigated rough seas off the South Carolina coast over the Memorial Day weekend has resumed sailing on its next cruise, Carnival Cruise Lines said Monday.
Terrified passengers on the Carnival Sunshine took to social media to post video of water pouring through a flooded hallway on a cabin level and pictures of on-board stores in shambles, with merchandise strewn about on the floor as large waves swelled on the sea.
Passenger Daniel Taylor said the crew “left us blind, not reassuring us what was going on, where we were heading to, what the plan was,” WCIV-TV reported .
“They could have updated us and let us know something,” he said.
The Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston, South Carolina, from the Bahamas on Saturday was delayed by prolonged bad weather and rough seas in the area, the Miami-based company said in a statement to The Associated Press on Monday. The vessel’s next cruise scheduled to leave Charleston this weekend was delayed, but is now sailing, the statement said.
No serious injuries were reported.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests,” Carnival said.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A storm with 40-foot waves battered the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine late Friday night, breaking glass, causing water to pour into the ship and terrifying passengers.
The ship, en route from the Bahamas to Charleston, encountered the storm off the South Carolina coast.
“We had a 40-foot wave hit our side of the ship. We almost fell out the bed. Things were crashing all around us and the carpet on my side of the bed was soaked (because) water came in thru our balcony door,” passenger Goodwin Sherbert wrote on Facebook .
Passenger William B. Blackburn, aboard for his first cruise with his wife and other family members, told CNN they stayed in their cabin and prayed they would be OK.
“(We) discussed the fact that it would be very unlikely to survive in the water even with life jackets and doubted that lifeboats could even be launched in those conditions,” he said. “It was terrifying.”
Video posted to Twitter under the handle @CrewCenter showed water running up and down a hallway and said the crew on one deck had to be evacuated to another part of the ship.
At one point the ship was listing to the left, CBS News reported .
“The ship took a hit from a wave that sounded like the ship split in two,” passenger Sharon Tutrone, a professor at Coastal Carolina University, said in a Twitter post .
Some passengers complained to CNN and CBS News about a lack of communication from cruise staff as the ship was pitching about.
Tutrone said the only time passengers heard from the captain was on Friday when he told them he had an experienced crew and would do everything he could to minimize discomfort as the ship encountered the storm.
Some passengers and crew members needed “minor assistance” from medical staff, a Carnival cruise spokesperson told CBS News. “Guests on board the ship were safe,” the spokesperson added.
The ship’s docking in Charleston was delayed by the weather. Some repairs to crew quarters also delayed its departure over the weekend to return to the Bahamas.
The National Hurricane Center warned on Friday that a non-tropical area of low pressure off Florida was set to move northward and inland over the Carolinas during the weekend. Forecasters said there would be gusty winds, dangerous surf and rip current conditions along parts of the southeastern coast of the United States through Sunday.
Passenger Bill Hassler, who told CNN he was “surprised I’m still alive” after enduring the storm, criticized the cruise line for allowing the ship to sail into such extreme weather.
“Why would you sail into this storm with 80 mph-plus winds, I mean who does that?” Hassler said. “What were they thinking?”

Footage has emerged of a cruise ship being flooded during a storm in the Gulf of Mexico - causing water to flow into people's cabins.
Travis Hair, a passenger on the Royal Caribbean vessel, filmed as the balcony of his room on the Voyager Of The Seas was swamped.
Mr Hair said he captured the video while the vessel was "sailing through a thunderstorm" on 26 January.
He added there were "high winds on the deck… platters of food crashing to the floor in the buffet, liquor and other glass breaking, water coming in through the balconies and flooding."
The footage also shows sunbeds piled up on the deck after being tossed around in the powerful storm.
The vessel was on its way back to Galveston, Texas, as part of a five-night trip to Cozumel, Mexico, according to USA Today.
Passenger Chelsea Ireland told the newspaper she felt the vessel tilt as it was battered by heavy winds.
She said: "When we tried to walk across our room, it felt like we were walking up a very steep hill."

Fellow passenger Elaina Escobedo, 21, went to her grandparent's cabin to check on them during the storm. "There were just things flying all over the place," she said.
Ms Escobedo added that her grandmother was safe on the sofa, but her wheelchair had rolled across the room and cups of lemonade had been knocked over.
The footage emerged after another Royal Caribbean ship, Serenade of the Seas, reportedly flooded last month.

Carnival passengers recount ‘nightmare’ cruise as storm floods ship
Videos showed the Carnival Sunshine cabins and hallways flooding and ceilings leaking
Matthew Branham and his fiancée, Madison Davis, were lying by a Carnival Sunshine pool on Friday aboard a cruise returning to Charleston, S.C., from the Bahamas when an announcement came over the loudspeaker. The captain was expecting rougher weather that evening, but there was nothing to worry about. So Branham and Davis didn’t worry.
As the day went on, “We noticed it started getting cooler in the afternoon — much, much cooler,” said Branham, 25, of Castlewood, Va. “And then it was like a switch was flipped, and it literally turned into a nightmare.”
En route back to Charleston Friday night into Saturday, the Carnival Sunshine navigated into a strong storm system that battered the southeast over the holiday weekend. Videos emerged on social media showing cabins and hallways flooding, shop floors littered with destroyed merchandise and leaking ceilings . Passenger Brad Morrell snapped a photo of an automated instrument map reporting a 69 knot, or 79 mph, wind.
#CarnivalSunshine : Due to return to Charleston, South Carolina this Saturday, May 27, 2023, has been delayed due to severe weather. The ship is currently off the South Carolina coast and holding position, unable to return to the port because of high winds & rough seas. #cruise 🙏🏼 pic.twitter.com/2B6HlAn2yD — ∼Marietta (@MariettaDaviz) May 28, 2023
Carnival said in a statement that the weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecast, but that its fleet operations center team, which relies on outside meteorology resources for itinerary planning, “coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location.”
“Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous,” the statement continued. “The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear.”
Strong Southeast storm slams Carolinas
Carnival said the captain made “several announcements about the weather and the delay it caused in returning to Charleston, asking guests to use extra precaution while walking around the ship.” Additionally, “some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made, but guests and crew were safe.”
The ship’s medical staff did help a “small number” of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance following the storm. Despite the significant damage and a delay in schedule, Carnival Sunshine embarked on its next five-day Bahama sailing on Saturday.
From their sea-view room, Branham and Davis watched as waves surged over their window and braced themselves as the 892-foot-long ship lurched in the storm.
“Waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor,” Branham said.
They were told to stay in their cabins. Meanwhile, Branham said, TVs were falling off walls, and glassware was sliding off shelves and shattering on the floor. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed.”
They packed up their belongings when their floor started to flood and took shelter in a main lobby area.
“All of the employees were sprinting downstairs with life vests,” Branham said. “There were little kids besides us screaming and crying and throwing fits.”
Throughout the storm, Branham wondered why there weren’t more announcements from Carnival staff. Besides the warning of rougher seas earlier Friday and one Saturday morning after they’d weathered the storm, Branham said they weren’t given any official updates on their situation. When he asked workers what was going on, they told him not to worry.

“But you see rooms flooded, and you can pick up a handful of sand and you’re kind of like, ‘What in the world? Why is nobody telling us anything?’” Branham said.
Jim Walker, a maritime lawyer and cruise industry legal expert, says his firm has been contacted by some Carnival Sunshine passengers who were injured during the storm, including a man who says he was struck by a door and broke his foot. Others have asked him about the potential for a class-action lawsuit.
While Walker said passengers should make their complaints known to Carnival, he doesn’t believe filing a lawsuit would be an efficient next step. Instead, impacted passengers can ask Carnival for a refund or a credit for another cruise, although there’s no guarantee the cruise line will grant such requests.
Pete Peterson, owner of Storybook Cruises , which is affiliated with Cruise Planners, said cruise ships keep a close eye on weather developments and will adjust their itinerary depending on the severity of the storm.
“Cruise lines monitor the weather all the time. They’re not going to put their passengers in harm’s way,” said Peterson, who has been a cruise adviser for more than 20 years and has sailed on nearly 60 cruises. “Obviously, some cruise lines are better at doing this than others.”
In 2016, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas returned to port after cruising into a “bomb cyclone,” which damaged the ship amid winds gusting to 100 mph. The ship sailed into the remnants of Hurricane Hermine seven months later, causing additional problems.
To ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers, a cruise ship can alter its course and circumvent the rough weather system. In stormy conditions, the crew can deploy the stabilizers, which will prevent the ship from rolling and bucking.
“You don’t experience the up and down,” Peterson said. “It’s not as rough a ride.”
Both approaches can add to a cruise line’s expenditures, Peterson said. Stabilizers slow the vessel, thereby consuming more fuel. Sailing around the storm can take longer than the original route and disrupt the company’s cruise schedule, leading to delays or cancellations. The cruise line may have to reimburse passengers or provide them with future credits because of the inconvenience.
“When they do something like that, it’s going to cost them money,” Peterson said.
Craig Setzer , a meteorologist and hurricane preparedness specialist, said that even with the hurricane-like conditions and flooding, “I would never be in doubt of the vessel’s integrity,” he said. “Cruise ships are structurally very, very sound and can survive a lot. They’re really rugged.”

( NewsNation ) — A storm hit a Carnival Cruise Line ship as it was headed back from the Bahamas on Friday night, with video capturing dark clouds, huge waves and even water flooding the decks and hallway of the vessel.
Nasty weather delayed the ship from docking in South Carolina for 12 hours.
Although Carnival Cruise Line said guests on board the cruise were safe, some did need to see the ship’s medical staff.
One woman aboard the cruise with her family, Crystal Shepherd, told NewsNation that she did her best to stay calm so her kids wouldn’t panic.
“The captain came on earlier that night and said that we would be experiencing some weather, but he didn’t really elaborate,” Shepherd said. “We didn’t realize that the storm would go on for hours and hours and hours.”
“We were scared, truly,” she added. ” In my mind, I was running through the quickest way to our muster station.”
Another cruise ship nightmare unfolded recently when a man went overboard on a different Carnival Cruise Line ship near Jacksonville, Florida.
Family and friends identified the missing man as 35-year-old Ronnie Peale Jr . Carnival said he somehow fell overboard at 4 a.m. on Monday. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard was still looking for him.
These incidents come as more Americans are flocking to cruises after being shut out from them during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Royal Caribbean Group said its occupancy was at 102% at the end of the first quarter — close to double what it was a year ago.
Norwegian Cruise Line also reported a jump in numbers, with a little more than 101% occupancy in the first quarter, compared to a 48% rate the year before.
“During peak periods you’re going to see cruises at 100% or more occupancy,” said travel expert Johnny Jet. “And it’s great for the travel business. A lot of countries depend on tourism, and cruising is a big part of that.”

A dream vacation became a maritime nightmare for those onboard a cruise ship caught in a fierce storm in the Bay of Biscay that left 100 people injured over the weekend, according to media reports.
"People were writing texts to their loved ones in case we capsized," an unnamed passenger told BBC News of the chaotic voyage.
The Spirit of Discovery, a vessel run by Saga Cruises, was carrying about 1,000 people on what was supposed to be a two-week cruise around the Canary Islands, the outlet reported.
But when the weather turned, the ship decided to return to the UK earlier than expected amid a coming storm. As it was making its return voyage, the vessel ran into a storm in the Bay of Biscay, an area off the coast of Spain and France known for its rough seas.
Amid slamming waves and howling winds, the ship's automatic safety system kicked in which caused the boat to veer and stop, the BBC reported. A spokesperson for Saga told the outlet that most of the injuries among passengers occurred at this moment and described most of them as "minor."
A representative for Saga did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
"To say 'minor injuries' is an insult to the many horrific broken bones, pelvises, lacerations, stitches, etc. that were caused [to] a very old passenger clientele," the same unnamed passenger told the BBC.

Jan Bendall, 75, a passenger onboard the cruise, told the BBC that the vessel didn't move for 15 hours as the storm raged on around them.
"It was quite frightening," she told the outlet. "I'm not somebody who frightens easily, it was quite dramatic."
Bendall said a section of the dining room was turned into a makeshift medical center.
Richard Reynolds, 60, told The Daily Mail he and his wife were passengers onboard along with his elderly parents. Reynolds said his mom was injured after being thrown to the floor when the boat rocked.
Reynolds said passengers were confined to their cabins and wore life vests for two straight days as they rode out the storm, afraid the ship might capsize.
"People were screaming for their lives, things were banging and crashing around us and they thought they were going to die," he told the outlet.
Five people were taken to the hospital when the ship was finally able to dock in Portsmouth on Monday, according to the BBC.

One shaken passenger asks, “What were they thinking?”
By David Williams, CNN
(CNN) – Cruise ship Carnival Sunshine was rocked by a storm over the weekend, frightening passengers and delaying the ship’s return to port in Charleston, South Carolina, and the departure of its next voyage.
First-time cruise passenger William B. Blackburn was on deck 6 of Carnival Sunshine during rough weather that started late Friday.
“It was terrifying,” Blackburn told CNN.
Blackburn was on the cruise with his wife and other family members.
“We stayed in our cabin, and prayed we’d be OK,” Blackburn said, and they took note of where the life jackets were stored.
“[We] discussed the fact that it would be very unlikely to survive in the water even with life jackets and doubted that lifeboats could even be launched in those conditions,” he said.

Fellow passenger Bill Hassler told CNN he was “surprised I’m still alive” after enduring the storm and said other passengers were “white as ghosts” when they finally disembarked late Saturday.
He shared video footage showing water sluicing through hallways, huge waves outside, and bottles and other items strewn across retail areas.
Hassler criticized the cruise line for allowing the ship to be sailed into such extreme weather.
“Why would you sail into this storm with 80-miles-per-hour-plus winds, I mean who does that? What were they thinking?
“They should’ve stayed down in port in the Bahamas, waited a day for the storm to subside a little bit and then go. Or when they got into the storm why didn’t they go further out into the ocean to get to the other side of it.”
Hassler said at one point, a wave broke the window of his cabin, allowing water to enter.
“When I got home Sunday night, I had to crack open a beer and think about it, and I started shaking because it just set in. I couldn’t even believe I’m still here.”
Carnival Cruise Line addressed the weather disruption in a statement:
“Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday,” Carnival said. “The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival on Sunday and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed.”
The cruise line said the ship is now sailing on its next voyage.
Blackburn shot his video of the storm around 11 p.m. Friday and said conditions got worse after that. He considered shooting more video but was afraid to open the door again.
“It felt like the ship ran into a wall, all of our stuff went flying off the counters, baggage fell over and slid around,” he said.
“The wind was howling, all I could see outside was a solid wall of water spray and rain mixed. The balcony divider door for the cabin next to us had broken its latches and was slamming back and forth something awful. The ceiling and walls were creaking, and the ship was making horrible noises, and sometimes violently vibrating like the engines were struggling against the surging waves.”
Video posted online from Twitter handle @crewcenter shows water and objects flowing down interior hallways.
Carnival Sunshine has capacity for 3,002 guests and 1,040 onboard crew. The ship has 14 levels.

Fire breaks out on world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, weeks after passenger fell to death
A fire broke out on the world's largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas , weeks after a passenger fell to their death.
The fire broke out while the Royal Caribbean ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico , with passengers being alerted with onboard announcements before the blaze was "quickly extinguished”. The cruise line said there were no injuries and the overall on board impact was “minimal.”
Passengers reportedly experienced a brief loss of power during the incident - with the fire starting in a 'crew area' of the vessel. It comes weeks after a passenger died after going overboard from the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas - plunging 90 feet to his death after he jumped from the running track on the fifth deck, according to a source.

On the first day of the week-long journey, the man—who has not been named—leapt from the running track on the fifth deck of Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, a security team member said on Saturday morning as the ship arrived back in Miami .
The service member indicated that since each deck is around 20 feet high, the man fell from a height of about 90 feet. They claim staff on board knew what had happened before he even hit the water.
Crew members told the New York Post the man's body was driven in a van to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office. At the ports, police also met the ship, obtained statements, and obtained a copy of the CCTV film showing the tragic event. A member of the security team said: "Almost immediately after the man jumped on May 26, the overboard detection system was activated, prompting onboard staff to take action."

"We knew what had happened literally seconds after he hit the water. The protocol is that we’re supposed to immediately make visual contact to see if we can spot him,” the source said, noting that one guard also saw the man jump on a security camera feed.
The record-breaking Icon of the Seas measures nearly 1,200-foot-long and 250,800 gross tons.
Fire breaks out on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, cruise ship loses power

A fire broke out on Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship on Tuesday.
The ship also experienced a brief loss of power, according to Nathaniel Derrenbacher, a spokesperson for the line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group . The ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, at the time.
There were no injuries and the small fire – which was isolated to a crew area – was quickly extinguished. The ship’s backup power was activated immediately, and the main power systems were restored.
Derrenbacher did not have additional information on where the fire occurred or how long the power outage lasted.
The vessel’s itinerary was not impacted. Icon, the biggest cruise ship in the world , is currently sailing a week-long Western Caribbean cruise that departed from Miami, Florida on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper . The ship is scheduled to visit Cozumel on Wednesday.
The news comes after a fire occurred in the exhaust funnel of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Freedom ship in March, the second such fire on the vessel in less than two years.

![cruise boat in storm Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas departs the Chantiers de...](https://www.orlandosentinel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/TOS-L-Port-Canaveral-Utopia-Update-02.jpg?w=620)
The second largest cruise ship in the world left the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France on Sunday and will arrive in Florida on July 11.
“The ship is coming straight to Port Canaveral from the shipyard so I think the first time we’ve had a ship come into the port, at least since I’ve been here, that’s brand new straight from the yard,” said Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray during the port commission meeting Wednesday. “So we’re really excited.”
The port has welcomed ships in their first year of service before, but usually after they make their debuts sailing Europe. The port is planning a community celebration for the ship’s arrival letting the public into Jetty Park to wave as it sails in along with a naming ceremony before the ship’s first revenue sailing on July 19.
“Royal Caribbean selected us for that honor of having the ship first, so we’re really excited and we want to do a good job with it,” Murray said.
Port Canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand
The new ship that will be taking over the short, three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from Royal’s Allure of the Seas, and Murray said that should continue to add to what has been a record-breaking revenue year for the port.
For the fiscal year that began in October 2023 running eight months through May 2024, the port has seen 622 ship calls with more than 5.1 million passengers, driving the port’s operating revenue so far to more than $128 million, which is nearly $3 million over budget.
“We’ll have to see how that evolves as Utopia comes on,” Murray said. “When that ship is up and running at full capacity it should really drive these numbers.”
Part of that is the notion the ship is being marketed as a destination along with its primary stop of Royal Caribbean’s private island Little Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, which has been renamed Perfect Day at CocoCay.
The sixth Oasis-class vessel, Utopia is only bested in size by this year’s Icon of the Seas, the first of a new larger class of vessels for the line that began sailing out of Miami in January. A sister ship to Icon, Star of the Seas, is headed for Port Canaveral when it debuts in 2025.
Utopia, though, is the first Oasis-class ship to use liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner burning fuel that is part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Port Canaveral was the first port in North America to provide LNG power to cruise ships when Carnival’s Mardi Gras debuted in 2021. Disney’s Wish and the forthcoming Disney Treasure are LNG-powered as well.
With Utopia sailing year-round, it continues Royal’s strategy of parking two Oasis-class ships at the port as Wonder of the Seas will continue seven-night sailing as well.
Utopia of the Seas is slightly larger than Wonder of the Seas coming in at 236,860 gross tons and 1,188 feet long with 18 decks and a 5,668-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. Original ship in the class Oasis of the Seas was the largest in the world when it debuted in 2009 followed by 2010’s Allure of the Seas, 2016’s Harmony of the Seas, 2018’s Symphony of the Seas and 2022’s Wonder of the Seas.
All but Symphony have spent some time calling Port Canaveral home.
Entertainment revealed for Port Canaveral-bound Utopia of the Seas
Unique to the ship will be a themed restaurant venue called Royal Railway – Utopia Station that brings travelers on board a virtual train, a new bar called the Pesky Parrot and the longest version of the popular twisting dry slide, the Ultimate Abyss.
It has eight neighborhoods including the Boardwalk, Royal Promenade and Central Park with more than 20 dining options and more than a dozen bars and lounges.
Top-deck features include eight hot tubs, five pools, three Perfect Storm waterslides, a surf simulator, mini golf, climbing walls, zipline and the Splashaway Bay water play area.
Entertainment options feature three new original shows among its three main venues, the AquaTheater, ice skating rink and main stage in the Royal Theater.

Padre Island homeowners seek urgent repairs to canals damaged in tropical storm
Damaged canals, bulkhead failures and sinkholes that happened on North Padre Island during Tropical Storm Alberto have left homeowners seeking immediate action to repair the properties.
The damage is to waterfront lots that are built along the island’s canal system, where more than 30 miles of bulkheads, or straight concrete walls that extend from below the berm to above land elevation, are built to separate the land from the canals, functioning as a protective barrier to prevent land loss from erosion and currents and also maintain proper water depth.
Padre Island Property Owners Association member and island resident Dave Edgecomb, who has lived on a canal lot on Cutlass Avenue with his wife, Kim, for seven years, said the storm sent torrents of water rushing past their house last Wednesday, resulting in downed palm trees and a breached bulkhead that caused sand to pour out from under the house and pool.
“There was much more water flow than ever before,” he said. “We’ve found it’s pretty much scoured clean down to the dirt floor base of the bulkhead. The canal bottom used to be 5 feet deep. The scouring of that current that came by during the tropical storm and that comes by every day due to tidal flow has now scoured that depth to 10 feet, so now the wall has no dirt in front of it."
He said that it wouldn’t take much for it to tip over.
“We haven’t done anything wrong, and that water has eroded,” Kim said.
An area around the center of the property line is slowly losing sand, also affecting his next-door neighbor, Brent Hammond, Edgecomb said.
“No one’s shored it up, no one’s put any rip rap or sand or whatever it needs on the side of it, so it continues to fail, and our yard continues to erode,” Hammond added.
Now, the residents are waiting to hear from the PIPOA about what will be done.
The PIPOA is responsible for bulkhead maintenance and repairs. PIPOA members pay an annual fee based on their residence and abide by a landowner agreement for common use and maintenance of the canals, parks and street, with a certain amount of the fee set aside for bulkhead maintenance.
At the monthly meeting of the PIPOA held on Tuesday night, Interim Board Secretary Drew Diggens read from a statement sent by Vice President Jeff Rackley, stating that the POA has loaned property owners the use of emergency bulkhead materials out of inventory on a loan to stabilize their homes to mitigate further damage, and that a meeting with the board would be held to discuss various options.
But multiple Padre Island residents who attended voiced concerns that too much time had passed after the storm without a response on how the damage to the bulkheads would be fixed.
The residents also say the City of Corpus Christi should be responsible for paying for damage to the canals.
City Attorney Miles Risley told the PIPOA that unlike streets, sewers and public waters that are under city control, canals are private infrastructure that are controlled and maintained in large part by private individuals, the PIPOA or developers.
“We haven’t identified city-owned or controlled areas within the canals,” the attorney said. “Those properties have never been dedicated to the city.”
A news release published by the City of Corpus Christi on June 19 stated that city staff had met with the PIPOA and homeowners of damaged properties, working with them on the best methods to combat bulkhead failures.
The release also said the city is identifying public property that may have been damaged in the storms and will work to streamline permit issues and address any damaged public infrastructure.
However, over a week has passed since the storm hit the property and caused the washout, and no one has taken any action on their property beyond assessing damages, Edgecomb said.
With the city filing a disaster declaration with the state of Texas on June 20 and residents reporting property damages to the Texas Department of Emergency Management, some PIPOA homeowners have been asking if the city will qualify for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding that could help private homeowners repair their own property.
Risley said that the city had extended the disaster declaration in coordination with TDEM and is working with the agency to maximize the chance of obtaining state or federal assistance.
At the meeting, the topic of the Whitecap and Gypsy bridges was also raised.
Last year, PIPOA members were worried that projects such as the recent construction of the Don Patricio Bridge on Park Road 22 would increase water flow rates below Whitecap and Gypsy and result in scouring, or underwater erosion, of bridge posts once the canals opened.
According to a press release written last December by Diggens, engineers for the PIPOA met with the City Engineering Services department and Diamond City Holdings to present findings to the participating parties.
“Engineers for all groups discussed the increased water velocity and resulting scour that will occur at the Whitecap and Gypsy bridges with the opening of the canals and Don Patricio bridge,” he wrote.
The PIPOA has conducted several studies, including one in December of 2023 with Seattle-based engineering firm Anchor QEA that included a peer review of a previous study conducted by contractor LJA Engineering, designed to observe projected flow rates in the canal system. The study engineers recommended further analysis to determine the need for scour protection at both bridges. Additional recommendations included a bathymetric multibeam survey of existing bridges before any scour protection was installed.
Diggens, reading from Rackley's written statement, said that the PIPOA also commissioned a survey in February for the canal system running from the former site of JB's German Restaurant and Bakery to the Gypsy Street boat ramp, which was designed to establish a baseline of canal conditions at that time. He said that was the week the canals were connected to the Don Patricio bridge, and the survey indicated no washouts before the Diamond Beach connection was made to the canals, adding that the POA members recently contacted board members about washouts on the Gypsy Bridge on Park Road 22 and the canals the week of June 10, before the storm.
At Tuesday’s meeting, City Engineer Jeff Edmonds told the group that the city accepts full responsibility for the bridges and bulkheads that lie within the public right of way and that are considered an integral part of the bridges.
Corpus Christi Assistant City Manager Neiman Young made clear Tuesday that the city will help facilitate discussions with the PIPOA, but it is not involved in mitigation or maintenance.
"As the city engineer has stated, we’re more than happy to invite the PIPOA into the discussions regarding communications on progress on maintenance that’s been made on bridges and public property, but as far as the bulkhead, I can’t make a commitment or any statement on that," he said.
The engineers from Anchor QEA were at Tuesday’s meeting discussing site investigations conducted with homeowners to evaluate the extent of the damage to existing infrastructure that happened during the storm, noting that damages would be included in a report to provide recommendations for short-term solutions for stability and repairs.
Hammond said that as the PIPOA waits on their recommendations for how to protect the property, he’s worried about additional storms that the season could bring.
“The engineers were out two days ago talking about building up the bulkhead, but it takes time to come up with engineering plans,” he said. “Will it happen before the next storm? Will that happen before my deck falls in? Will that happen before this reaches Dave’s pool? I don’t know.”

NASA and Boeing officials pushed back against recent reporting that the two astronauts brought to the ISS on Starliner are stranded on board. The companies said in a press conference Friday that they are using “the luxury of time” to learn as much about the capsule as possible before it returns to Earth. The two astronauts will be there for a few more weeks while the company and NASA perform more tests from the ground — meaning yet another extension to their stay, though officials declined to provide a new target date for their return.
