RISING announce their 2024 Program
Danny Brown and Thelma Plum Join Splendour in the Grass 2023 Lineup, Set Times Released
By Alex Gallagher
American rapper Danny Brown and Gamilaraay singer-songwriter Thelma Plum have been added to the lineup for next month’s Splendour in the Grass festival in Byron Bay. Both artists replace previous lineup acts Slowthai – who was quietly removed from the lineup after he appeared in court charged with rape – and Rainbow Kitten Surprise .
Danny Brown will deliver an Australian-exclusive performance on Splendour’s first day (Friday, 21st July) on the Mix Up Stage, while Plum will play on the GW McLennan Stage on its final day (Sunday, 23rd July).
Danny Brown – ‘3 Tearz’ (feat. Run the Jewels)
The replacement announcement comes one day after Splendour organisers confirmed that Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi – who had been scheduled to perform at the festival – would no longer be performing .
Capaldi announced earlier this week that he would be “taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future” in a statement shared on Instagram. “I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”
In today’s announcement, Splendour organisers said that with Capaldi’s cancellation being so recent, the team “are currently working through options and will have an update as soon as possible.”
Coinciding with today’s announcement of Brown and Plum joining the lineup, Splendour organisers have also shared playing times and a map for this year’s event. You can see both of those on the Splendour in the Grass website . You can also access both by downloading the festival’s Splendour app, which is available for both iOS and Android, and allows you to plan your festival itinerary.
Splendour in the Grass 2023 will run from Friday, 21st to Sunday, 23rd July at its usual home, North Byron Parklands. The lineup includes Lizzo , Flume , Mumford & Sons , Yeah Yeah Yeahs , Hilltop Hoods , J Balvin , Sam Fender , IDLES , Little Simz and more. Tickets are on sale .

Danny Brown (born 16 March 1981) is an alternative hip-hop recording artist, hailing from Detroit, Michigan, who has achieved success with his several releases since 2010.
Well known for his outlandish lyrics, which often involve a voyeuristic view into his excessive recreational drug use and what he gets up to in the bedroom, Danny Brown has built up a reputation as an outsider in the hip hop industry, often using producers not associated with mainstream rap such as Rustie and BadBadNotGood.
The MC, whose real name is Daniel Dewan Sewell, found fame later on in his career, after spending his formative years dreaming of becoming a wealthy rapper, he found himself on the crime-laden streets of Detroit selling drugs, before a mildly successful stint with hip-hop group “ Rese'vor Dogs”.
He became known to rap fans in 2010 when he recorded “Hawaiian Snow” with G-Unit Records member Tony Yayo. After brief fruitless flirtations with 50 Cent’s aforementioned label (there were disagreements on Brown’s image) and a string of independent mixtapes, he released his debut album “The Hybrid, his first project to feature his now distinct high pitched nasal vocal style.
As the album generated a buzz online, Brown garnered the attention of Brooklyn’s Fools Gold records, founded by former Kanye West tour DJ A-Trak, who signed him and distributed his second, critically acclaimed, release “XXX” in 2011. Many reviewers cited the album as an indication of the future of hip-hop in the Internet age.
Following on from the success of XXX, Brown quickly got to work on a follow up project. The result was this third and most recent album, “Old”, titled so in reference to his elder status amongst his younger peers in the current wave of Internet rappers, which was a commercial and critical success, reaching #18 on the Billboard charts.
Often seen dancing wildly with his lounge out on stage, Danny Brown has brought his rock star like performances world at various festivals such as Coachella and Glastonbury, He also recently toured with frequent collaborators, A$AP Rocky and Schoolboy Q. Of course true to Danny’s “weirdo rapper” status he has also also performed and recorded unlikely indie artists such as Vampire Weekend and Purity Ring.
Live reviews
If you want to go to the most exciting, energy-filled concert of your life, Danny Brown is the way to go! Danny Brown dedicates his entire time on the stage to making the concert as insane as possible. It starts out with an opening act coming on stage. After that comes yet another opening act. And then another one! The fact that Danny waits so long to come on stage just amplifies the excitement brewing in everybody. It makes them not be able to wait to see him perform, so that when he does come onstage, everybody goes crazy, and i feel like that is a reason why this concert has more energy than any concert ive ever been to. People were jumping up and down and dancing throughout the entire venue. The bass was so loud that my ears were ringing the entire way home! Danny Brown hasn't been in the public eye for long. I started listening to him about a year before he really got discovered. So seeing him live was amazing because he is one of my favorite rappers of all time. His style has evolved over those years. With his first album, "The Hybrid," he rapped about partying, girls, and living in poverty. With his second and most acclaimed album, "XXX," he did pretty much the same thing, except it was really raw, real, and honest. He told stories about his life and did it in a way that brought people in and made them connect to him in a way. Also the beats produced by his friend and producer, Skywlkr, were truly a work of art and enhanced to the listening experience greatly. Skywlkr is also the DJ at the shows, and he is great live, too. In his newest album, "Old," he changes his style to songs that sound more like they were supposed to be played at a club than his other albums. He seems to lose his sense of "originality" that he built up over the course of his first two albums. I didn't really enjoy his last album, but even if you didn't enjoy his latest album, those same songs that i hated on the recorded version of the album were some of the most intense and energy-filled points of the concert. I think that those songs were meant to be played in a live environment. He is definitely an artist whose show you do not want to miss if he is in town. His shows are also relatively cheap. I got an email from Songkick saying that he was coming to town, and im glad i signed up for Songkick, because it said he was coming to town for $25! But overall, the concert was incredibly memorable and if you have the chance to go, do NOT pass it up.

One of the most charismatic rappers on the hip hop circuit, Danny Brown, real name Daniel Dewan Sewell does not take himself too seriously onstage and his crowd really responds to this. His cheeky, endearing personality means that he builds instant rapport with the huge audience before he even opens his mouth. Therefore the reaction to a slick rendition of 'Molly Ringwald' gets an even more momentous reaction. The sheer size does not seem to phase him as he takes it all within his stride.
Brown jovially moves from side to side of stage and continues to enthusiastically jumps in time with the crowd and the beat whilst delivering 'Blueberry (Pills and Cocaine)' note perfect. His huge afro-like hair bouncing all the time and for many further back it is all that is visible.
His experimental collaboration with Purity Ring, '25 Bucks' goes down particularly well and demonstrates why he is considered to be one of the most innovative performers in hip hop. A bass heavy version of 'Dip' keeps the crowds moving one last time and leaves them with the impression Danny is set for huge things.
So I just saw Danny Brown at Camp Flog Gnaw in Los Angeles and I've gotta say... that was by far the most hectic show I have ever attended. I've seen guys like Travis Scott and Vic Mensa, but Danny made them look like boy scouts. The DJ he had came out to warm the crowd up for about 15 minutes and just played banger after banger after banger. The crowd was already buzzing but the DJ got everyone even more excited. When Danny came out everyone just went nuts, and it was such a great time. Go see Danny Brown
P.S. The visuals are great (understatement).
Danny puts on a good ass show man every penny spent was sooooo worth it. I've never had a show make me move around like mad man before but this Danny Brown one sure as hell did. I had no voice afterwards, I was sweating like crazy, and I could not hear lol if anybody wants to go to an amazing rap concert, it's Danny Brown for sure
He's amazing. Definitely would see again. He played a lot of songs I didn't expect and preformed with a lot of energy. Also got a free DB sticker at the door. Was wishing it wasn't over when it was. The lights were also some of the best I've seen.
Great concert, Danny was a great stage presence and the openers had amazing energy and intensity. The setlist had a lot of hits, newer stuff, and much older stuff. Highly recommend seeing him if you get a chance!
'twas mad. Like, really really good. Like, reeeeeaaaaaally good.
Christ it was so good. It was just so good. Like, on another level type good. Danny Brown is the fucking madman.

‘I was really hard to work with’: rapper Danny Brown on reaching rock bottom – then beating addiction
He’s one of the most distinctive voices in US music, but got lost in drink, drugs and depression. Brown explains why he poured his pain into new album Quaranta – and now dotes on his chihuahuas
E arlier this year, Danny Brown entered rehab. “My aunt had died, and my family was asking me for the money to put on a funeral,” he says. “But I didn’t have the money, and I didn’t know how to tell them. They knew I’d had the money. But I’d just pissed through it, getting fucked up and sniffing it up. I felt like a failure.”
This was not even the rapper’s lowest moment. In 2020, living in his native Detroit, he was well aware that he could overdose on drugs contaminated with fentanyl – a powerful synthetic opioid – but he didn’t seem to care. “I got to the point where I was pretty much suicidal,” he says.
This year should have been straightforwardly successful for Brown, one of the US’s most distinctive rap voices: a career-galvanising sixth solo album, Quaranta, comes out this month, and Scaring the Hoes, an album made with fellow rap tearaway Jpegmafia and released in March, is a shoo-in for end-of-year “best of” lists. But the 42-year-old has also been navigating a new relationship with fame, creativity and the swirl of drugs, alcohol and wild behaviour that have defined his public image for the past 10 years.
Brown, real name Daniel Dewan Sewell, is telling this story from his new home in the suburbs of Austin, Texas, a diagonal leap down from the frostier climes of his Detroit home town. I walk in to find a picture of pristine domesticity: scented candles, a spread of delicate orchids and leathery anthuriums perched tidily on slatted plant stands, a huge L-shaped sofa and two chihuahuas, Ditto and Samson. When a delivery of barbecue brisket and sausage arrives for us, Brown feeds most of his share to Ditto.
He moved here in 2021 to be with his partner, with whom he had previously been in a long-distance relationship, as well as to be closer to the studio where he records his weekly comedy call-in podcast, The Danny Brown Show . Perhaps just as important, though, was getting out of Detroit.
Born to teenage parents, Brown spent his childhood playing video games with a tight-knit family. His dad, a house DJ, passed on an obsession with music, and his mum read him Dr Seuss books and got him hooked on rhyme. But as he grew up, and after his parents split up, his life became less sheltered.
He told Complex magazine in 2012 that he started selling drugs because his friends were doing it, and he thought it might give him something to rap about. But then he got caught – and caught again – and spent eight months in prison. He emerged more determined than ever to be a rapper, carving a career out of debauched tracks that doubled as what he has described as “trauma dumps” sketched from life at the fringes of society. His brand of nihilistic hedonism was an antidote to the financial meltdown and “forever wars” of the late 00s, and the bling-rap that felt so incongruous in the face of it all.
The title of his breakout album, 2011’s XXX , referenced the Xs stamped on Xanax tablets and his age, 30 – a figure Brown highlighted knowingly, aware that he was ageing in a young man’s game. His voice stood out a mile: nasal, scratchy, stinging like a burst blister.
“What I did was embrace all the negative shit that was keeping me from getting a record deal,” he says – his age, his skinny limbs, missing teeth, backcombed hair. Brown helped usher in a wave of woozy, harebrained and wildly experimental prescription-drug-addled rap, along with the Awful Records crew in Atlanta, emo-rap interlopers such as Lil Peep (who died of an accidental overdose of Xanax and fentanyl in 2017) and Billboard megastars Future and Lil Uzi Vert.
By 2019, Brown was at the peak of his creative powers with fifth album uknowhatimsayin¿ . Q-Tip, one of his musical heroes, executive-produced it – a rarity – and Brown planted a foot firmly on each side of the divide between weirdo insurgent and hip-hop classicist, which he had been seesawing between for close to a decade.
Then, in the months that followed, as Brown arrived at the brink of 40, he split up with his long-term partner and had a victory-lap tour torpedoed by the pandemic. He was broke, and broken. “It was rough. But the only thing I could do to get over it was, like, fuck it, I gotta make more music, I just gotta get back in the studio because when shit cracks back open I gotta be able to be ready,” he says, now able to recognise that he was running on fumes – and away from his problems. He moved out of the home he had shared with his ex and their cats (she kept the cats) to a flashy downtown penthouse nearer to his studio space.
Making music had become an excuse to treat himself by getting wasted. He looks down into his lap as he takes a pull on his vape and arranges his thoughts. “I’m in this nice-ass apartment, it was like four bedrooms, but I’m lonely as fuck. It got to the point I was just getting fucked up, every day, by myself.” He would get through a bottle of spirits a day, topped up with a smörgåsbord of cocaine, pills, mushrooms, weed or whatever else was on offer.
In the Jonah Hill-directed video for 2017’s Ain’t It Funny, Brown plays a sitcom character hooked on a crack pipe and begging for help while a canned-laughter crowd chuckles. Watching the clip now feels awfully prescient. “It was seven days a week,” he says, listing the daily routine of his time in that Detroit penthouse, where bender rolled into hangover, headache into house party. “I was in pain all the time. Throwing up and shit, you know? It was my rock bottom, that’s how it was.”
Rock bottom is where Quaranta was made. It’s an album that serves, in its unguarded, pockmarked account of life at the bottom of a bottle, as a detox and a spiritual successor of sorts to XXX. Quaranta means 40 in Italian, but the title also points to Covid quarantines and the sad isolation of Brown unravelling in his penthouse. “This rap shit done saved my life, and fucked it up at the same time,” the title track begins, a lolloping confessional backed with pining spaghetti western guitars. Brown’s voice is staid and measured, far from the high-pitched squall that typified his breakout years, the one that means he is “having fun”, he told the Guardian in 2013. “And then when the low voice comes, it’s drama.” Quaranta is, to borrow Brown’s own parlance, a low-voice album. “So much fentanyl was going around at the time, so you were risking it every time you got a bag [of drugs],” he says. “So I was making it with that in my head, too, like: ‘Maybe this might be my last album’ kinda shit, you know?” In that sense, the album flips between the sound of Brown signing out and sending warning shots to himself.
Quaranta has been done for the best part of three years. For a while, Brown thought he was being shelved by his label, the experimental stable Warp, and sabotaged by his management. He said as much in drunken rants on his podcast and directed his fans to harass his manager and spam social media with the hashtag #FreeDannyBrown (this was another prompt to get himself to rehab). In the meantime, he hooked up with Jpegmafia and made Scaring the Hoes, an abrasive, claustrophobic tangle of blown-out drums, synths and chemical excess.
“When we were making it, it was really hard to work with me,” says Brown. “I was at my drunkest at that time. There would be times when he’d come down here and I’d get blacked-out drunk and we wouldn’t do shit for a weekend, but then there’d be times when he’d come and I’d do five songs in a day. I would love to make another album, but I would understand if he never wanted to work with me again.”
By the time the pair were touring the record this summer, Brown was sober and travelling in a separate car behind the tour bus – for his own health, as opposed to any personal animosity. Simple experiences, such as watching fans sing his words back to him, hit him differently. “I actually started to have fun being on stage again,” he says. “Doing the shows sober almost became like a therapeutic thing, to just see the people in the crowd smiling and being happy and having a good time. That energy translated to me, so it was like I was getting my fix every day with that .” Day-to-day, that feedback comes in simpler forms: he lifts his phone to show off the app on which he has logged more than 200 days without a drink, a streak he doesn’t want to break.
He is not beating himself up over his creative limitations, either. Music-making, he says, “is like a hard level on a video game. Before, I would stay up all night trying to beat it. But now, I know I can just leave it, go to bed, and then I’ll probably do it on the first go the next morning.”
Brown still feels as though Quaranta is a make-or-break moment, and he has worried about how his recent mellowing might affect his creative output. “I’ve seen so many artists get sober and then their music sucks ,” he says. But in sobriety he has gained a newfound patience and perspective: “I feel like with this album coming out, and seeing how much depression and shit I was going through with making that album, you get like a happy ending at the end of the movie, seeing where I’m at in my life right now.”
Quaranta is released by Warp Records on 17 November.
