Dawn French plays Sydney Opera House as 30 Million Minutes Australian tour goes on and on

THE Australian tour was meant to be for eight dates but it is now 29 shows and the finale is being filmed. Dawn French is letting it all hang out.

IN the 34 years since she first appeared in TV’s The Comic Strip Presents, Dawn French has moved from alternative comedy outsider to British national treasure. But it’s not a title she covets — or even understands.

“It’s funny isn’t it? It sounds like you’ve sunk to the bottom of the sea and have to be dug up!” French laughs. “Who knows what it means? I don’t know if I am one or not, I don’t know what the requirements are. Nobody sent me an application form!”

Essentially a funnier version of punk rock, alternative comedy swept away the tired old racist gags and easy targets of the club comics in the 1980s, resulting in a raft of classic TV shows including The Young Ones and French and Saunders .

But it’s The Vicar of Dibley to which French attributes her latter found respectability.

“(It) was incredibly popular in the UK — as it here, which I’m delighted to know. So you kind of get elevated to a status that you’re very lucky and privileged to have. But I don’t take any of that for granted.”

Following the death last year of Roger Lloyd-Pack (Owen), a revival of the original sitcom isn’t on the cards. “Our old guys are really old now,” she says. “So I don’t think we could revisit it, because it’s just too different.”

But she hints a new series could expand on the storyline for last year’s Comic Relief special, in which Geraldine lost her job as Vicar and narrowly missed out on becoming a bishop.

“It could change: you know we now have Church law in the UK that women could be Bishops so who knows? Watch this space — she might get a promotion!”

Dawn French could soon become The Bishop of Dibley

French was also instrumental in getting the Absolutley Fabulous: The Movie off the ground, famously betting Jennifer Saunders £100,000 that she’d never write the script.

“She’s a huge procrastinator,” she says. “She didn’t want to give me the money so she did actually give me the script in the end.”

French makes a small appearance, though says it may end up on the cutting room floor.

The comedian has been touring the country over recent weeks with her one woman stage show Thirty Million Minutes (her age, thereabouts in minutes). It’s been a massive success, expanding from an initial run of eight to 29 dates around the country, including a just announced finale at the Sydney Opera House, to be filmed for posterity. Not bad for her first solo tour.

“I miss (Saunders) touring because we’d always have good fun during the day times,” she says.

It’s the most personal and revealing she’s ever been and delves into areas most celebrities are afraid to touch. From her father’s suicide, to her own infertility and the breakup of her marriage to Lenny Henry (and subsequent marriage to charity boss Mark Bignell) nothing seems off limits. She also talks about how she feels the UK media has bullied her over her weight — “It’s a shame that the shell you come in defines you” and revealed for the first time on opening night that her dramatic, much commented upon 47 kilogram weight loss in 2011 was actually to get in shape for a hysterectomy after a cancer scare.

“There are obviously things I don’t say, but I do say an awful lot in this because I’m sort of fed up with having this misrepresented. I just want to put the truth out there,” she explains.

“It’s a bit of a rollercoaster of an evening — it’s mainly cheerful and funny, but there are moments when it gets more difficult.”

Dawn French (right) bet Jennifer Saunders she’d never write the Ab Fab movie.

One of the most affecting and honest moments is dealing with her much loved father’s death at his own hand when she was just 19. He suffered from bouts of severe depression.

“I can’t talk about my family without talking about my dad and I can’t talk about my Dad, without talking about how it ended,” she says. “How you survive a moment like that, how a family goes forward and how I actually live a lot of my life as a tribute to my dad.”

Her relationship with her own adopted daughter Billie (the video of Henry and French meeting her for the first time is included in the show) hasn’t always run smoothly. Billie, 24, recently moved out of home after another round of their all too frequent “wars”.

“I’ve been sent a feisty kid and there’s a hell of a lot to keep on top of (laughs) but you know my shoulders are broad enough to cope,” she says, revealing she’d just got off the phone to Henry who is “holding the fort back there”.

“We talk tactics all the time!” she says. “She makes all kinds of decisions like all young people do and some of them she needs a bit of support with. So if I’m not there my husband helps or Len helps. And the two of them talk to each other. So it’s good, we’re all wrapped round her, so she can’t wriggle too far.”

Dawn French has been the target of media attacks over her weight.

Now 58, French has settled into a comfortable new career as a best-selling author of an autobiography and three novels including her latest, According to Yes. It’s a saucy book with plenty of sex.

“When I was writing those scenes for some reason I just had to shut the door!” she laughs. “I don’t know what difference it made because thousands of people are reading this novel!”

She calls writing “an absolute joy” and can’t believe it took her so long to discover its pleasures. Apart from being the sole person in charge of her own creativity, writing a novel over eight months rather than filming or touring, allows her to spend time with Mark, her step children Lily, 24, and Olly, 21 and Billie, who’s a few minutes down the road.

“It places me in Cornwall near my kids, I’m in my own bed every night with my old man, in my home where my friends and where my family are. I really love it. It’s a really fulfilling thing,” she says.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Dawn French tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Dawn French adds a further four new Australian dates to her brand new live show 'Dawn French Is A Huge Twat'

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, DECEMBER 5, 2023: Dawn French, the Queen of British comedy, returns to the stage with her one-woman stand-up show ‘Dawn French is a Huge Twat’ playing across Australia in April and May 2024 – and the phenomenal demand for tickets continues!

A further 4 new dates have been added – Palais Theatre, Melbourne on April 27, Wrest Point Entertainment Centre, Hobart on April 30, Civic Theatre, Newcastle on May 4, and State Theatre, Sydney on May 11.

Tickets go on sale on Thursday, December 7 at 12pm. A special Live Nation/Ticketmaster/Venue presale runs from Wednesday, December 6 at 11am, for 24 hours. All times are local.

Dawn French is a much-loved figure in Australia, having toured most recently in 2016 with her first solo stand-up show Thirty Million Minutes – performing a magnificent 38 shows across the country!

Discussing this new tour, French said, "This show is so named because unfortunately, it’s horribly accurate. There have been far too many times I have made stupid mistakes or misunderstood something vital or jumped the gun in a spectacular display of twattery. I thought I might tell some of these buttock clenching embarrassing stories to give Australian audiences a peek behind the scenes of my work life…Roll up! Book early to see the telly vicar lady be a total twat on stage, live in front of your very eyes. And ears.”

Few people are as firmly ensconced in the British comedy firmament as Dawn French. As one half of the ground-breaking comedy duo French & Saunders (with Jennifer Saunders) she blazed a trail that shaped TV comedy through the 80s and 90s, spoofing everyone from Oasis to The Corrs and brilliantly sending up films such as Titanic and The Lord Of The Rings series.

In the early 90s, both French and Saunders forged separate but equally successful paths, creating two comedy institutions in the process. As Jennifer Saunders launched Absolutely Fabulous, Dawn French starred in multiple roles in the black comedy Murder Most Horrid, often playing both murderer and murdered in the same episode. This was followed by the enormously popular Richard Curtis series The Vicar Of Dibley, which attracted over 12 million viewers to its series finale. Dawn is also a successful author, having written six best-selling books.  Her latest book, The Twat Files, is published in October.

French has also enjoyed considerable success on stage, both as a stand-up comedian and actress, and on the big screen in films from Coraline to Death On The Nile. In 2022, she announced her return to the stage with her show Dawn French Is A Huge Twat.

Review: Dawn French at Riverside Theatre

Dawn French is a Huge Twat  at Riverside Theatre Wednesday, April 10, 2024

Hundreds gathered on Wednesday night to revel in the glorious twattery of the unabashed queen of British comedy, Dawn French, at Riverside Theatre. Returning to open her latest one-woman show,  Dawn French is a Huge Twat , the evening marked the first revival of French’s irresistible stand-up in Australia since her last sold-out run in 2016.

With no opening act, French arrived on stage to an operatic chorus of musical ‘twat’ lyrics, setting the tone of the sardonic and decisively silly show. French’s immediate arrival on stage was met with thunderous applause, revealing an audience of eager British comedy fans who had clearly excitedly anticipated the evening and proving that the greats often don’t require a warm-up.

Greeting the audience with warmth and humility, but obviously not total surprise that the full house was packed with passionate fans, French’s stage presence was akin to that of a friendly figure. Bringing audiences along on stories with her, French’s delivery, though clearly strongly scripted, emphasised audience-host interaction and responses.

Dawn French

While billed as ‘stand-up’ specifically, the evening arguably had more of a memoir, or ‘evening with’ style, which saw French recount, episodically, a varied selection of stories about her personal life, famous friends, own celebritydom, and career. Anecdotes about audiences’ favourite television and film productions, including  Harry Potter  and  The Vicar of Dibley , were also liberally peppered in.

Organised around the titular theme of Dawn French’s hilarious, occasionally mortifying, and often endearing track record of unadulterated twat-foolery, the humour of the show was primarily drawn from French’s own candidness. Audiences revelled in and occasionally cringed at French’s openly recounted tales of innocent mistakes, emboldened risks, and mischievous shenanigans.

Among the many highlights is French’s recounting of her attendance at Elton John’s prestigious 50th birthday party. The tale of a particularly disastrous costume decision manifested at John’s red carpet event left many audience members in tears, providing a perfect climactic ending to the first half of the show.

Additionally, French’s recounting of her likely lesser-known theatre roles was a surprising delight. Particularly as her devilishly confident ‘twatness’ appeared most intensely and thus hilariously in stories about live theatre.

dawn french tour sydney australia

While an occasional dubious joke or remark certainly made the somewhat aged nature of some of the stories clear, overall the stories were enjoyable, inoffensive, and simply charmingly silly. The tenacious name-dropping throughout the show was forgivable in that the story that followed was often hilariously less than flattering for French.

While shows that take on a certain live memoir style risk producing a convoluted, underperforming, and ego-driven piece of dismissable entertainment, French’s show deserves respect and reverence. Particularly as a female actress having worked during several challenging decades in the entertainment industry, French’s focus on her personal mistakes and growth as a woman in the public eye was incredibly generous and not without its vulnerabilities. The undeniable value of the show arises from French’s ability to laugh at herself and encourage, with good humour, a room of several hundred strangers to do the same.

A love letter to beloved shows of the past, a tribute to a lost era of entertainment industry tomfoolery, and a candid reminder of the joy that comes with being tenacious, a bit silly, and up for a laugh—this show was the full package and a testament to the timelessness and comedic mastery of Dawn French.

“This show is so named because unfortunately, it’s horribly accurate,” French said in a statement. “There have been far too many times I have made stupid mistakes or misunderstood something vital or jumped the gun in a spectacular display of twattery.

“I thought I might tell some of these buttock-clenching embarrassing stories to give Australian audiences a peek behind the scenes of my work life…Roll up! Book early to see the telly vicar lady be a total twat on stage, live in front of your very eyes. And ears.”

French was last here in 2016 on the Thirty Million Minutes tour, playing a total of 38 shows across the country. French’s new book The Twat Files will be out on Thursday, 12th October.

Dawn French is coming to Australia next month

Dawn French, the Queen of British comedy, returns to the stage with her one-woman stand-up show ‘Dawn French is a Huge Twat’ playing across Australia in April and May 2024 – and fans have already snapped up their tickets in droves!

A further 3 new dates have been added to satisfy demand – AEC Theatre, Adelaide on April 17, Civic Theatre, Newcastle on April 20, and Palais Theatre, Melbourne on April 24.

‘Dawn French is a Huge Twat’ commences with two shows in Perth at Riverside Theatre on April 10 and 11, followed by AEC Theatre in Adelaide on April 16 and17, Civic Theatre, Newcastle on April 19 and 20, Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on April 23 and 24, Wrest Point Hobart on April 29, Royal Theatre Canberra on May 3, Sydney’s State Theatre on May 8 and 9, The Star Gold Coast on May 14, concluding at Brisbane Convention Centre on May 16 .

Dawn French is a much-loved figure in Australia, having toured most recently in 2016 with her first solo stand-up show  Thirty Million Minutes  – performing a magnificent 38 shows across the country!

Discussing this new tour, French said,  “This show is so named because unfortunately, it’s horribly accurate.
