Lighthouse Point Disney Cruise Line Private Island: Opening Date & First Sailings, Details

disney cruise second private island

Disney Cruise Line’s new private island destination is Lighthouse Point, located on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. This post covers everything we know about DCL’s counterpart to Castaway Cay, including the opening date, when preview & inaugural sailings to Lighthouse Point will happen, plus full details & concept art. ( Updated November 4, 2023 .)

Created in close collaboration with local artists and advisors, Disney Cruise Line’s vibrant island retreat at Lighthouse Point will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.

Keep reading to discover all the latest details about this relaxing beach escape designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with a commitment to conservation at its core.

When Disney Cruise Line guests arrive at Lighthouse Point, they’ll be greeted by distinctive, sweeping architecture in bright, saturated hues. This style was inspired by nature and created in partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and local artists.

The curvilinear buildings will at first appear as Bahamian shells scattered along the shoreline. Upon closer inspection, guests will discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of Junkanoo parades. Throughout the destination, references to playful folklore characters will evoke the warmth and charm of the local culture.

Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design at Lighthouse Point. At least 90 percent of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

Let’s start with a first look at the arrival point, Mabrika Cove, with brand-new concept art released by Disney Cruise Line in November 2023.

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are considered the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will immediately experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

The Goombay Cultural Center (pictured below) will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades that will come to life in many ways across Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming.

The brilliantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights, sounds and spirit of the country’s signature festival.

There will be plenty of family entertainment in store at Triton’s Trumpet Stage. And fun fact: The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiral seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet.” And for you Disney fans, if Triton sounds familiar, you might recognize it as the name of the mighty king from the beloved Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid.”

Of course, we must mention the shopping opportunities! Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. What I really love is how the shop will spotlight Bahamian artists through an array of unique items that families will be able to bring home with them as a special keepsake.

And now, the question you might have been asking … is there going to be an adults-only space on the island? The answer is yes! I’m delighted to share that Serenity Bay will be a relaxing retreat exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older. For those of you who have sailed with Disney Cruise Line before, you might recognize Serenity Bay as a must-visit location on Disney Castaway Cay! At Disney Lookout Cay, Serenity Bay will feature a tranquil beach experience with a dining area and private cabanas available for reservation.

Disney Cruise Line’s visitors to Lighthouse Point will have the opportunity to be surrounded by the wonders of nature and get a glimpse into the efforts taking place to conserve wildlife and their unique island habitats.

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and discover authentic Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. As with DCL’s other private island, Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group.

Families can relax and play along white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the expansive family beach on the east side of the Lighthouse Point, which will be centrally located near market-style dining, recreation and other amenities.

A Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide DCL visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

Lighthouse Point’s interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more. This play area will also feature a dedicated space for toddlers.

North of the family area will be Lighthouse Point’s adult beach. This stretch of sun-drenched serenity will offer Disney Cruise Line guests a dedicated dining area for convenient access to food and drinks throughout the day, plus six private cabanas available by reservation.

disney cruise second private island

Children ages 3 to 12 will splash and play at a kids’ club under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. The kids’ club will offer a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from “The Little Mermaid,” plenty of shade, as well as a dedicated dining area.

Set away from the activity of the main family area, a peaceful beach along Lighthouse Point’s southwestern shore will be lined with 20 premium family cabanas available for DCL guests to rent, including four double cabanas that accommodate larger groups and offer massage services.

disney cruise second private island

Additional recreational activities will be available for guests of all ages, including a covered gaming pavilion, volleyball court, gaga ball pit, watercraft and bicycle rentals, nature trails for hiking and biking, and more. New Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the rich culture and breathtaking beauty of Eleuthera.

Lighthouse Point is being thoughtfully designed to provide a hassle-free experience for families, including complimentary beach essentials (towels, chairs and umbrellas and lunch), and tram transportation.

First Sailings to Lighthouse Point Private Island

disney cruise second private island

In June 2024, Disney Cruise Line will debut its new private island destination, Lighthouse Point, on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Cruises aboard the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will visit this vibrant beach retreat designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with sustainability and conservation at its core.

A three-night preview cruise on the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled for June 6, 2024 and will feature a sneak peek of Lighthouse Point with limited access to some areas. Throughout Summer 2024, Lighthouse Point will be a featured stop on select three-, four- and five-night sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean on the Disney Magic out of Fort Lauderdale. These South Florida-based itineraries will vary stops between Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, with five special sailings including both Disney Cruise Line island destinations.

A 7-night inaugural cruise to Lighthouse Point aboard the Disney Fantasy from Port Canaveral, Florida will occur on June 8, 2024. This ultimate Disney Cruise Line island destination itinerary will feature not one, but two stops at Lighthouse Point … and that’s not all! One day of sun-drenched serenity at Castaway Cay also awaits your family on this once-in-a-lifetime sailing.

One special 10-night Southern Caribbean sailing aboard the Disney Fantasy will give your family another opportunity to visit Lighthouse Point with additional visits to the islands of Antigua, St. Lucia, Dominica, Tortola and Castaway Cay.

In terms of commentary, I don’t have a lot to add. The concept art makes this look really nice, like a cross between Castaway Cay and Aulani. We love both Castaway Cay and Aulani, and I’m sure this will be awesome. Having the private island lean more towards authenticity is great, even if I do enjoy the Imagineered vibe of Castaway Cay. (That reminds me a bit of Typhoon Lagoon, whereas I suspect this will not.)

All in all, we expect Lighthouse Point to be a great destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. Based on the description, it sounds like DCL and Imagineering have learned lessons from what worked and didn’t with Castaway Cay, and this is essentially the next generation of that. It appears that practical improvements have been made, giving Lighthouse Point a greater sense of fun and luxuriousness, along with the increased emphasis on authenticity. That’s just my impression based on the concept art and press release, though.

disney cruise second private island

I stopped paying close attention to the Lighthouse Point saga a while ago, but have nevertheless been expecting an update on this for the last couple of years . You might recall that ex-Imagineer Joe Rohde was the face of the Lighthouse Point project when it was first announced almost 4 years ago.

Renowned for his culturally-respectful work on Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii, Villages Natures in Paris, and a variety of other independent projects, Joe Rohde was unquestionably Disney’s best ambassador when it comes to conservation and projects that highlight cultures.

When Lighthouse Point was announced, Joe Rohde shared how he was embarking on an in-depth cultural tour of the Bahamas meeting with local artists and cultural experts. He explored cultural sites across New Providence and Eleuthera, from Junkanoo shacks to noted art galleries, gathering samples, hearing from locals, and determining the best approach for telling their stories.

If anyone could “sell” a project like this to conservation groups or those otherwise opposed or on the fence, Joe Rohde is that person. He has an effortless way of passionately speaking about pretty much anything, doing so in an earnest and engaging way. He comes across as genuine and easy to trust. Unlike some stuffed shirt, if he says Disney will focus on culture and conservation, you believe him. Or at least, you want to believe him .

disney cruise second private island

At that time, Lighthouse Point was a controversial project that was still awaiting an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan, along with approval by the Government of The Bahamas and public consultation. There was a lot of backlash pre-pandemic, but the plan was to open Lighthouse Point by last year or this year. Obviously, construction delays were an inevitability with the border closures and cruise industry essentially pausing for over a year.

There was also Joe Rohde’s “retirement” in late 2020. At that point, all of the design work and assessments would’ve been completed, but it seemed like Rohde was still important as the face of the project–just as he had been with Aulani until (and even after) its opening. That along with everything else led us to wonder whether Disney Cruise Line had abandoned Lighthouse Point.

Disney Cruise Line aggressively proceeding with its fleet expansion (not to mention the surprise acquisition of another partially-completed ship) made it likely that Lighthouse Point was going forward. Still, we hadn’t heard anything about it and were surprised when no updates were offered at the most recent D23 Expo.

disney cruise second private island

Ultimately, Lighthouse Point looks like it’ll be a fantastic destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. The environmental issues it poses do give me pause, and I hope Disney wasn’t just paying face to these issues in order to secure approval. While the company’s track record with Aulani is good, this is a bit different in nature. Hopefully Disney is sincere in its statements that Lighthouse Point will be minimally disruptive to the natural environment and that the island destination will be used in an environmentally-responsible way.

Again, Lighthouse Point will open for Disney Cruise Line guests on select sailings in summer 2024. Stay tuned for more details about inaugural itineraries, signature entertainment, dining, retail and excursions, and additional information.

I have tremendous respect for Joe Rohde and enjoy everything he’s designed so I’m sure this will be wonderful—but I love Castaway Cay (and it’s heavy Imagineering) so much that I am just not excited about it’s alternative. I assume we will eventually get there on an itinerary that visits both islands, but in my heart of hearts, I’d rather double dip at CC.

The only thing that really surprised me was that they didn’t build way more cabanas. I think at minimum, even if they ran out of coastline, they could have gotten away with a second row “obstructed view” that cost slightly less and still printed money on them. I guess I should be congratulating Disney on the decision not to sacrifice more shoreline for many so they can squeeze out an extra (estimated) $3000/cabana per week.

' src=

I’m still dreaming they’ll build an Aulani-type resort in the Caribbean for us non-cruisers!

' src=

I have mixed thoughts on this, which probably reflect my overall ambivalence about Caribbean cruising in general. Part of me has an aversion to the concept of “traveling” to a place that’s innately fairly artificial. On future sailings that will no doubt visit both private islands, the idea of a guest saying they “went to the Bahamas” seems somewhat dubious since they will have never left the Disney bubble.

On the other hand, I fully understand that the areas around most “real” Caribbean cruise ports are often crudely commercial and don’t reflect the people, culture, beauty, or history of those islands (imagine a tour of US national parks where your only activity is stopping to shop, eat, and ride aerial tramways in gateway towns like Estes Park, Gatlinburg, or Springdale). And stepping ashore with thousands of other cruisers doesn’t exactly enhance the ambience or authenticity. Thinking about Nassau specifically, the cruise port-adjacent zone is tacky/industrial, whereas excursions to Atlantis or Blue Lagoon island are basically just upcharged versions of Castaway Cay.

Now of course I get the irony of griping about artifice on a Disney blog site, and I did enjoy most aspects of my one and only voyage on DCL. But leaning into suspended disbelief within the spectacularly imaginineered pretenses of the theme parks just feels different to me than sailing hundreds of miles to a place where you’re really not “there.”

' src=

What I don’t understand is at Lighthouse Point you can rent a Cabana are they letting people stay on the island? I can’t imagine renting for the few hours you get to stay like at Castaway.

' src=

We are planning to sail in July 24 so maybe we will get lucky and get to go to Lighthouse Point. It looks really relaxing

' src=

Is the plan for DCL to replace Castaway Cay entirely with Lighthouse Point? If not, has there been talk about certain sailings including Lighthouse in lieu of or in addition to Castaway?

' src=

They need the second private island with the growing fleet. I have no clue if certain itineraries will include both stops, but I’m guessing so at some point (albeit maybe not in 2024). That would be a popular itinerary for DCL diehards.

' src=

We are taking the plunge and giving DCL a try this coming December, so this won’t be available yet. Oh well. It looks cool, and I’ll be curious to hear about it. I had no idea they were even close to completing this.

The Honorable Dionisio D’Aguilar, Minister of Tourism and Aviation started the event with the keynote address which included the following informative overview of the status of Disney Cruise Line’s Lighthouse Point project.
“With regard to the Disney project in South Eleuthera, I’m delighted to report that COVID delays not withstanding, that project is progressing. Disney, I’m advised has satisfactory completed its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), addressed all of the concerns brought forward at the town hall meeting and other gatherings. It was also confirmed that Lighthouse Point is expected to open to Disney Cruise Line Guests in 2024, which had been projected previously.

At this time, it is not yet known what itineraries will visit Lighthouse Point, but presumably ships based in Port Canaveral — and potentially Port Everglades, if Disney’s terminal there comes to fruition — will have stops at this island destination.

Disney gets approval for its second private island.

Posted by: Jamie Sylvester February 27, 2022

Lighthouse Point

If you’ve ever sailed away with the Disney Cruise Line, you’ve hopefully had a chance to visit Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . This island experience is unlike anything we have ever experienced before as it’s like having a slice of the Disney magic while on a tropical oasis to the Bahamas. Now, reports show that Disney has received the approval it needs for a second private island .

Lighthouse Point

The new $400 million island project was first announced back in 2019 and was given the name “ Lighthouse Point ” with hopes of calling the southern tip of the island of Eleuthera home. The massive undertaking of having a second private island is no small feat.

Former Disney architect and designer Joe Rohde researched and studied the possibility of the island experience and promised that Lighthouse Point will highlight the culture of the island and the Bahamas, while still maintaining that Disney magic.

Fast forward to the present, due to the “Heads of Agreement with The Bahamas”, work on the new island project required governmental and environmental permits and agreements to be finalized. Disney Cruise Line has now received all of the required environmental approvals to begin construction on their all-new cruise destination.

According to The Nassau Guardian , President of Disney Cruise Line, Thomas Mazloum stated, “We are so grateful for the support we have received from the people and government of The Bahamas over the past few years. It is because of your engagement and feedback that we have continued to shape the project into something we can all be proud of. I am pleased to share that we have now received all the necessary approvals from the government of the Bahamas to begin our work at Lighthouse Point.”

“As we get started, we remain committed to our guiding principles: creating sustainable economic opportunities for Bahamians, protecting and sustaining the natural beauty of the site, celebrating Bahamian culture and helping to strengthen the community in Eleuthera. We are excited to move this important work forward with you and will continue to keep you updated on our progress and how you can get involved.”

Lighthouse Point

With the construction soon to begin, Disney Cruise Line has said it expects to hire close to 300 local employees to get the island project moving. Local businesses are also expected to benefit from the incoming Lighthouse Point.

Not everyone is thrilled about Disney’s arrival, however. According to The Nassau Guardian , despite Disney pledging to donate a quarter of the land it purchased to the Bahamian government, the project has been met with controversy as “local and international environmentalists have urged the government not to approve the project for fear of the impact the introduction of cruising will have to the sensitive ecosystem of South Eleuthera.”

The Lighthouse Point project timeline is still up in the air. Disney had hoped to begin construction in 2020 with its completion in 2022 or 2023. With the push back to approval coming now in 2022, we suspect it will be close to 2024 or 2025 before the island is ready for Disney Guests. Check out Disney’s details in the video below:

Disney Is Opening a Second Private Island — and the Imagineer Behind Animal Kingdom Will Help Design It (Video)

disney cruise second private island

Castaway Cay fans, rejoice: Disney’s creating another Caribbean oasis.

Disney Cruise Line announced at D23 Expo that it will be developing a second private island similar to its fan-favorite getaway Castaway Cay . Lighthouse Point, the new Bahamian port of call for future Disney Cruise Line sailings, will be located on the island of Eleuthera and will pay homage to Caribbean music, art and food while highlighting conservation efforts through the Disney Conservation Fund.

It’s big news that Disney Cruise Line is adding a second oasis-like escape on future Disney Cruise Line vacations, but for many Disney fans, the involvement of Imagineer Joe Rohde is even more important. It signals that Disney’s newest island is not just an exceptional port of call — it’s going to be worth booking an entire vacation around.

Joe Rohde is known as a bit of an experiential sage among Disney obsessives; like Midas for theme park locales, he seemingly turns each project into gold. Much more than the lead designer behind Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Rohde has a storied career at Walt Disney Imagineering and a hand in some of its best projects. Aulani — A Disney Resort, located outside of Honolulu, seamlessly melds local culture and historical traditions with Disney-caliber experiences, a specialty of the artist-turned-Imagineer also seen in work including Epcot’s Mexico and Norway pavilions and the fabled Adventurers Club within Florida’s now-shuttered Pleasure Island.

In addition to being the lead designer for Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom park , Rohde’s also collaborated on newer attractions like Expedition Everest — our pick as the very best ride at Walt Disney World — and the naturistic escape of Pandora — The World of Avatar . Even Tiffins, one of Walt Disney World’s best table-service restaurants , plays like an ode to his team’s travels with artifacts and mementos lining lobby display cases; one of Rhode’s sketches is delivered with every check.

With Travel + Leisure readers voting Disney Cruise Line as the World’s Best mega-ship ocean cruise liner earlier this year, Lighthouse Point is certain to go above and beyond Castaway Cay.

Speaking of the new Caribbean outpost at D23 Expo 2019, Rohde assured Lighthouse Point is “not some replica of an old Bahamian town, not a pirate fantasy, but a dream-like landscape of adventure by the sea, where art and nature combine with Disney magic to create a destination that can only exist in one place.”

Considered a “seaside adventure camp,” this new Disney Cruise Line port of call will honor the music, food, culture and storytelling of the island, but above all, its people. Lighthouse Point will be created in collaboration with local artisans and musicians and draw inspiration from local traditions like Junkanoo, a colorful Caribbean celebration with costumes and floats.

Inspired by the flora and fauna of the Bahamian island, the decor and structures will also celebrate Lighthouse Point’s natural beauty with a color palette sourced by its surrounding trees, flowers and fish. From the crystal blue waters and sandy beaches to experiences that promise to celebrate Disney magic and Bahamian culture, Lighthouse Point is shaping up to be a must-visit locale.

Construction on this new Disney Cruise Line port of call could begin as early as next year, but according to Disney Parks Blog , is awaiting environmental assessment plans to be reviewed and finalized. Construction is said to potentially be completed in late 2022 or 2023.

Disney Cruise Line also revealed details about its newest ship, Disney Wish, at D23 Expo over the weekend. The brand new vessel — which is just one of three new ships debuting over the next five years — will expand on The Walt Disney Company’s nearly 40-year history with Make-A-Wish Foundation to have a charitable component as part of the ship’s launch .

The private island destination, located on the southern end of Eleuthera, will offer cruise passengers a beach retreat with market-style dining, recreation and other amenities.

Disney released new renderings of the destination’s offerings, including the family water play area, the adult-exclusive beach, the dining area and the themed kids’ club.

Disney said it worked in close collaboration with local artists and advisers when creating Lighthouse Point, which will also focus on celebrating Bahamian culture.

“At Disney Cruise Line, we have a deep appreciation for the Bahamian community,” said Sharon Siskie, Disney Cruise Line senior vice president and general manager, in a statement. “With the opening of Lighthouse Point, visitors from around the world will experience the magic of the Bahamas in a new way, one that truly celebrates its natural and cultural beauty.”

The destination will feature a Bahamian art and culture pavilion, with special programming for visitors to learn about the traditions of the Bahamas.

Lighthouse Point has also been designed with the environment in mind and limits impact to the natural landscape. About 90% of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an on-site solar array, according to Disney.

“Lighthouse is a place of extraordinary natural beauty, so our goal has always been to create designs that accentuate its qualities in an organic way,” Walt Disney Imagineering creative director Kevin Thomas said in a statement. “We’re focused on low-density, sustainable development that protects and preserves the environment, allowing the site’s biodiversity to shine.”

Disney said it will share more information about amenities and itineraries at “a later date.” Lighthouse Point becomes Disney’s second private island destination in the Bahamas, joining Castaway Cay.

Disney first announced Lighthouse Point last fall during its D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. The new destination comes as Disney continues to expand its fleet of cruise ships. The next ship, the Disney Treasure, is expected to begin sailings in 2024.

Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point – What We Know So Far – UPDATED

Disney Cruise Line’s current fleet of five ships will become a fleet of eight ships within the next few years. To accommodate the associated passenger influx, in May 2019 Disney purchased a second major property in the Bahamas, Lighthouse Point , to be a supplement to its current private island Castaway Cay.

Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point will be opening to cruise guests during the summer of 2024.

Lighthouse point is a 700-acre parcel of land on the southern tip of the island of Eleuthera, about 132 miles southeast of Castaway Cay.

History of the Agreement | The Guest Experience on the Island | The Magic and Fantasy to Visit Lighthouse Point Summer 2024 | Official Name Announced | Arrival Point, Cultural Center, Stage, Shopping, and Adult Area Details | Disney Releases Lighthouse Point Port Adventures | Disney Releases First Photos | Island Food Offerings Announced | Updated Construction Photos | Disney Releases Lookout Cay Map

History of the Agreement

Disney has pledged to develop just 20% of the land it has purchased and return about 190 acres to the Bahamian government for use as parkland, maintaining much of the rest in its pristine, undeveloped state. DCL has also committed to using sustainable building practices and ensuring strict environmental standards. At the D23 Expo in September 2022, Disney announced that the development will be 90% solar-powered. (A 550-page environmental-impact study for Lighthouse Point is available at lighthousepointbahamas.com .)

In addition to protecting the environment, Disney has pledged to make a positive impact on the Bahamian economy with Lighthouse Point. The project is providing 120+ construction jobs, approximately 80% of which will be Bahamian. DCL also has a goal of creating about 150 well-paying operations jobs once the site opens. As a step toward the second goal, DCL now has a partnership with Junior Achievement Bahamas. The program will provide services to nearly 1,000 high school students on Eleuthera and will include education on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and college preparedness. Additionally, DCL has awarded $150,000 in grants to small businesses on Eleuthera, designed to fund training in topics such as developing marketing plans and understanding financial statements. According to the project’s spokespeople, Disney’s goal is to have a ship at the Lighthouse Point port three to five days a week, with the destination having room for just one vessel at a time. Weekly visitors are expected to number approximately 11,400–26,600, depending on the season and which ships are in port.

The Guest Experience on the Island

When guests arrive at Lighthouse Point, they’ll be greeted by distinctive architecture in bright, saturated hues. The curvilinear buildings will at first appear as Bahamian shells scattered along the shoreline. Upon closer inspection, guests will discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of traditional Junkanoo parades. Throughout the destination, references to playful folklore characters will evoke the warmth and charm of the local culture.

Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design. Approximatley 90% of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and enjoy Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. Much like Disney’s cruise ships and private island of Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group. Families can relax and play along white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the expansive family beach on the east side of the island, which will be centrally located near market-style dining, recreation and other amenities. And a brightly-colored, interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more, along with a dedicated space for toddlers.

A Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

North of the family area will be an adult-exclusive beach — a stretch of serenity complete with a dedicated dining area for convenient access to food and drinks throughout the day, plus six private cabanas available by reservation.

There will also be 20 premium family cabanas available to rent near the family beach, including four double cabanas that accommodate larger groups and offer massage services.

Children ages 3 to 12 will have the opportunity to play at a themed kids’ club under the care of trained Disney Cruise Line counselors. It will include a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Little Mermaid,” shaded areas, and a dedicated dining zone.

Additional recreational activities will be available for kids of all ages, including a covered gaming pavilion; a volleyball court and gaga ball pit; watercraft and bicycle rentals; nature trails for hiking and biking; and more. And a collection of new Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the culture and landscape of Eleuthera.

The Magic and Fantasy to Visit Lighthouse Point Summer 2024

The first sailing to Lighthouse Point will be the June 6, 2024 3-Night cruise of the Disney Magic departing from Fort Lauderdale. The majority of three and four night sailings of the Magic during summer 2024 will also stop at Lighthouse Point. Four 5-night Magic sailings (on July 1, 15, 26 and August 12) will stop at BOTH Lighthouse Point and Disney’s original private island, Castaway Cay.

The official inaugural visit to Lighthouse Point (though not the first chronological visit) will be the June 8, 2024 sailing of the Disney Fantasy, with will make a stop at Castaway Cay and TWO stops at Lighthouse Point.

Lighthouse Point Gets an Official Name

At a Destination D23 session on September 9, 2023, president of Disney Signature Experiences Thomas Mazloum announced that the official name for DCL’s second private island will be Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Additionally he said, “Disney teams are collaborating with talented artists and cultural advisors in the Bahamas to shape an experience that celebrates the natural beauty, traditions and artistry of the one-of-a-kind nation.”

Arrival Point, Cultural Center, Stage, Shopping, and Adult Area Details

On November 3, 2023, DCL announced details about several areas of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, including information on the arrival area, a cultural center, a stage, the shopping area, and an adults-only zone.

Arrival Point – Mabrika Cove

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

  • Goombay Cultural Center

The Goombay Cultural Center will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with music and parades that will come to life across Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming. The colorful pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights and sounds of the country’s signature festival.

Triton’s Trumpet Stage

Triton’s Trumpet Stage will be the site of family entertainment on the island. The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiraled seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet,” as well as for the king in Disney’s The Little Mermaid films.

  • Treasures of Eleuthera

Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. The shop will spotlight the work of Bahamian artists.

Serenity Bay

Like Disney’s first private island, Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will feature an adults-only zone called Serenity Bay. This area will be reserved for the exclusive use of guests ages 18 and up and will include beach and dining areas, as well as private cabanas available by reservation.

Disney Releases Lighthouse Point Port Adventures

Disney has announced their initial list of port adventures (excursions) that will be available for booking when Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point opens later this year.

Some of the excursions are substantially the same as those available at Disney’s first private island, Castaway Cay. These are bicycle rentals, bike and kayak exploration of the island, banana boat rides, and several variations of snorkeling and scuba trips.

The wholly new experiences involve exploration of the history and natural elements of the island of Eleuthera, home to Lookout Cay. Among these are “Ebike, Sand, Snorkel, and History Toru,” “Historical Nature and Awesome Buggy Tour,” “Private Historical and Cultural Tour,” “South Eleuthera Eco and Cultural Tour,” and “South Eleuthera Eco and Historical Tour.”

Prices for these port excursions are substantially the same as those at Castaway Cay. For example, a one-hour bike rental is $15.00 at both locations.

Disney Releases First Photos

With Lighthouse Point scheduled to open within just a few months, Disney has released its first actual photos of structures on the new private island. (All photos in this section ©Disney.)

We’ve been served up a line of cabanas with boldly colorful roofs, nestled beside some remarkably clear blue water. It looks like the two on the left (red and yellow) are larger grand cabanas with smaller standard cabanas falling in beside them.

disney cruise second private island

Next up is what appears to be a platform for seating at True-True Too BBQ, a guest lunch spot. The roof-like shades are designed to resemble sea shells and are painted underneath with images items from nature.

disney cruise second private island

The third image Disney shared is a more prosaic look at some structures near a tram stop. My guess is that these will be merchandise shops and/or kiosks for snacks and drinks.

disney cruise second private island

In addition to the photos above, we’ve recently seen an artists’ rendering of new costumes that Mickey and Minnie will be sporting on the island. I’m 100% here for Minnie’s big-bow moment. And we’ve learned that Disney is making good by tapping into the creative talent of island residents and educating young Bahamians on career opportunities.

As someone who loves Disney and loves (loved) Eleuthera’s pristine untouched uncrowded, mostly undiscovered beauty, this whole thing saddens me. Secret gone.

Have you ever been on a Disney Cruise ?

disney cruise second private island

Disney Wish at Castaway Cay

If not, you’re missing out on an entirely different kind of Disney vacation, full of fun activities , GREAT dining , amazing entertainment , unique character interactions , and more! For certain sailings, you also get access to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. But soon, Disney Cruise Line will introduce its SECOND private island, Lighthouse Point — and we’ve got a first look at it!

Lighthouse Point is located on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas, which means that it will be available for select cruises to the Bahamas.

Disney created it by collaborating with local artists and call it “a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.”

disney cruise second private island

Guests who visit Lighthouse Point will see “distinctive, sweeping architecture in bright, saturated hues” with buildings shaped like shells. Guests will also “discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of Junkanoo parades.” Visitors will also find references to Bahamian folklore characters.

disney cruise second private island

One of the main concepts behind the new island is sustainability. At least 90 percent of its electricity will be met by an onsite solar array. Also, the pier where ships will dock was designed in a way that limited any impact on the island’s natural landscape.

disney cruise second private island

The island has white sandy beaches, including a family beach on the east side of the island, which will also be located near “market-style dining, recreation, and other amenities.”

disney cruise second private island

There will also be a Bahamian art and culture pavilion , which will bring special programs to guests and feature local artists so guests can learn more about local art and culture.

disney cruise second private island

Guests will also find an interactive family water play area with two slides, water drums, fountains, and more. There will also be a dedicated space for toddlers.

disney cruise second private island

A themed kids’ club will be available for children ages 3 to 12 where parents can drop off their children to be under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. It will include a  Little Mermaid -themed splash pad and a dedicated dining spot.

disney cruise second private island

For adults who want to get away from it all, there’s also an exclusive adult beach. This beach has its own dedicated dining area plus six private cabanas that can be reserved ahead of time. This beach lies just north of the family beach.

disney cruise second private island

That’s not all, though! There’s a space AWAY from the main family area with another beach lined with 20 premium family cabanas that will be available to rent.

disney cruise second private island

This includes four double cabanas for larger groups — these will also offer massage services.

disney cruise second private island

There will be plenty of recreational activities for everyone, as well as a collection of new port adventures. Complimentary beach supplies will also be available, like towels, chairs, umbrellas, and lunch. Tran transportation will also be available for travel on the island.

Lighthouse Point will open for guests starting on select sailings in the summer of 2024 .

Disney Doubling Down on Private Island Concept With New Bahamas Retreat

Disney Doubling Down on Private Island Concept With New Bahamas Retreat

Disney Cruise Line came roaring back following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020 hit the cruising industry hard. Moody’s, the credit rating agency, revealed the top three biggest cruise operators – Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line – lost a combined $900 million per month during the pandemic. Disney Cruise Line was not immune to such dire straits, with limited capacity on its sailings and the delay of its newest ship, the Disney Wish.

These days, however, you would be hard-pressed to find many residual signs of the pandemic’s impact on Disney Cruise Line. Fans of cruising have much to look forward to, especially in 2024, with the launch of Disney’s new private island destination, Lighthouse Point.

In this article:

A new private island prepares to open next year

disney cruise second private island

Lighthouse Point is the upcoming Disney Cruise Line-exclusive island destination located on the southernmost tip of the island Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Lighthouse Point’s first guests will arrive in June 2024, and once open, the island will be the second private island just for guests aboard Disney Cruise Line. According to Disney , Lighthouse Point will be a “vibrant island retreat” and “will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.” The ships sailing the initial itineraries headed to the island will depart from Port Canaveral, Florida which is about a 70 minute drive from Walt Disney World.

While Lighthouse Point will be what Disney describes as a “celebration” of the Bahamas, it will still be isolated from the rest of the islands. Mikkel Woodruff, co-founder of Sometimes Sailing , points out, “Disney has thankfully chosen to lean into the location of Lighthouse Point and embrace the bright colors of the Bahamas. Though it’s not the same thing as going to some of the islands in the Bahamas with long-standing history and culture, it’s nice that DCL guests will get a taste of the flavor of the Bahamas at Lighthouse Point, like at the planned Arts and Cultural Pavilion.” Disney’s Bahamian cruises also stop at Nassau as one of its ports of call.

Lighthouse Point will include multiple beaches for families to kick back and relax, including one adult-only beach and private cabanas available for rental. If you want a day on Lighthouse Point filled with more activity, you will find hiking and biking trails around the island. And when hunger strikes, “market-style dining” will be close by.

Lighthouse Point joins a legacy of other private islands

Disney’s new island destination will join Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s original private island. Castaway Cay is a 1,000-acre island in the Bahamas, featuring multiple beaches, biking, running trails, character meet and greets, and more. For many cruisers, a trip to Castaway Cay is almost like an extension of Disney World, with several activities akin to what you would find in central Florida. Cara Beigel, Co-Founder of The Insiders, shares some of her experience from a recent Disney Cruise: “We have been big fans of RunDisney for a while, so the 5k on the island was super fun and I love the relaxing vibes and Disney magic hidden throughout the Island.”

Disney cruises that sail to the Bahamas and the Caribbean make at least one stop at Castaway Cay. Can’t decide which private island to visit on your next cruise? For some itineraries, you won’t have to choose. Kimberly Fidler, VP of Marketing for Get Away Today, notes, “Guests traveling June 2024 and later are lucky to have the option to book a cruise with itineraries that will visit both of Disney’s private islands.”

Disney is one of many companies with a private island for its cruise ships. Major cruise lines like Norwegian, Princess, and Royal Caribbean also have private island destinations, with these ports of call, in particular, ranking high among guests as their favorite destination while cruising.

More upcoming offers from Disney Cruise Line

disney cruise second private island

Even if your next Disney Cruise Line voyage does not include a trip to Lighthouse Point, there is plenty to look forward to in the 2024 Disney Cruise Line season and beyond. The fleet’s sixth ship, the Disney Treasure, is set to arrive in 2024. It is the second of three new ships – with the Disney Wish being the first – joining the fleet through 2025. According to Disney , the Treasure will center around the theme of adventure.

In addition to those three new ships, Disney Cruise Line is finishing construction on a ship acquired in 2022 that will be docked in Singapore starting in 2025. Southeast Asia is not Disney’s only new international market in the coming years. “Disney Magic at Sea” cruises aboard the Disney Wonder will begin in the fall of 2023 in and around Australia and New Zealand. Repositioning cruises will be offered aboard the Disney Wonder in October 2023 and February 2024, including stops throughout the South Pacific, like Fiji and Samoa.

With all the excitement building around Disney Cruise Line’s newest offerings, it can be easy to lose sight of the original ships among the flurry of maiden voyages and other announcements. However, Disney’s existing fleet of ships still offers plenty of great dining, entertainment, and relaxation. Gavin Doyle, the founder of MickeyVisit.com shared that he was “blown away by the Disney Cruise to Alaska that had something for the entire family.” The Alaska cruises are conducted on the Disney Wonder, one of Disney's first ships constructed.

Disney continues to invest in and evolve their cruise offering. This new private island allows Disney to even better service guest needs generated by the addition of new ships.

Did you know that Disney World has only closed four times or that the iconic theme park is actually not located in the City of Orlando? Take a look at some fun facts that you may not have known about the renowned Disney resort.

Smash the champagne, Mickey Mouse fans . Disney has announced that the company has purchased a second private island in the Bahamas, additionally revealing exciting new details about their fifth, themed cruise ship that are in the works.

During the all-important annual D23 Expo in Anaheim over the weekend, reps for the entertainment giant revealed the news of the second, official tropical destination for Disney Cruise Line (DCL,) Disney Parks Blog reported.

Inspired by the popularity of Castaway Cay, a private Bahamian island which operates as an exclusive port for DCL ships, the company has purchased Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera.

Construction may begin as early as 2020 with competition by late 2022 or 2023, the Parks Blog reports, following clearance of an environmental investigation approved by the Bahamian government.

More specifically, Disney will develop “less than 20 percent of the property” and practice sustainable building methods in what they develop, the outlet said.

In related nautical news, Disney officials also announced that DCL’s fifth ship will be christened the “Disney Wish," as confirmed by the Parks Blog. The Wish is tentatively scheduled to be delivered in late 2021 and hit the high seas in January 2022.

New Details On Disney Cruise Line’s Next Private Island

Picture of Richard Simms

Richard Simms

  • June 8, 2019

It looks like plans for Disney Cruise Line’s second private island are moving along slowly, but surely. While details remain few and far between — and there are still several major hurdles that must be overcome — if all goes well, Castaway Cay will eventually get a sibling!

The Next Big Step

Disney Fantasy and WDW Pandora May 2017 21311

The long-rumored, only more recently confirmed project will see Disney Cruise Line spending millions to develop an area known as Lighthouse Point in South Eluthera. And the Nassau Guardian reports that bids are now being accepted for general contractors and others so that once all systems are go, things wil be able to get rolling.

Doug Crosby, Disney’s project manager for the new build, updated attendees of the Bahamian Contractors’ Association at their monthly luncheon. “Currently, Disney is going through an environmental impact assessment in preparation for the EMP, which is the environmental management plan,” he explained. After that would come, among other things, a period of public review and, he made clear, “we really can’t start any works until we complete that process.”

Disney’s Imagineers Are On The Job

Disney is hoping to begin construction on the outpost in late 2019 or early 2020, but Crosby admitted the process can be a long one.

The report went on to say that Disney’s famous Imagineers are looking to incorporate various aspects of The Bahamas in as many ways as possible. “A lot of the Imagineers are working closely with some of the layering,” Crosby said. “From a design standpoint, there’s an artwork program which we are looking to incorporate and one of our head creative persons is working with a lot of local artists and vendors to create that image.

Where Disney’s Ships Will Be Going

disney magic

Meanwhile, Disney also released details as to what itineraries their current fleet will be sailing during the second half of 2020. This comes, of course, as we anxiously await news about the first of several new ships on order, set to join the fleet in the fall of 2021. Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy will continue to sail out of Port Canaveral, heading to the Caribbean and the Bahamas on sailings of various durations.

In September of 2020, the Disney Wonder will sail out of San Diego, offering two-, three-, four- and five-night trips to Baja and the Mexican Riviera, as well as a single seven-night Mexican Riviera sailing. Those looking for a longer voyage might consider booking the Wonder ’s November 6th 14-night Panama Canal cruise out of San Diego. After that, the ship will relocate to Galveston, Texas, and offer trips out of that port to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, the Disney Magic will once again visit New York City, sailing out of Manhattan in October of 2020 for three five-night sailings to Bermuda and a single five-night sailing to Canada.

Bookings for these sailings will open to the public on Thursday, June 13th.

Castaway Cay: A guide to Disney Cruise Line's private island

Erica Silverstein

A visit to Castaway Cay is a highlight of any Disney cruise to the Bahamas or Caribbean. The island is the exclusive beach-day playground for Disney Cruise Line guests, and cruisers can enjoy a fun, hassle-free day of sunbathing and water sports at the island.

Your day on Castaway Cay is idyllic because you have to make very few arrangements. You can walk off the ship and head right to the beach. Beach chairs, umbrellas, towels and a delicious lunch are all provided to you. Your biggest decisions will be if you want to book a shore excursion, which will leave from a convenient location just steps from the ship, and which beach you and your family want to check out first.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The island is themed around a shipwreck, as if you are the castaways and your mates have used the crates and driftwood that have washed ashore to build the island's structures. You'll also find many of your Disney friends ashore in their best beach attire, so the cruise ship magic continues on island.

Castaway Cay, like all things Disney, focuses on family fun, but it still reserves some on-island spots for drop-off kids activities supervised by the ship's youth staff and adults-only relaxation. Teens get their own secret hangout.

You can choose your own adventure on Castaway Cay and a visit here is never the same twice. Plan your perfect private island day in the Bahamas with our guide to Disney's Castaway Cay.

Note: Prices for activities and rentals can vary based on sail date and whether they're booked pre-cruise, on board or on shore.

Where is Castaway Cay?

Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay is located in the Bahamas, near Great Abaco island. It's 225 nautical miles from Port Canaveral, home port of several Disney cruise ships. Disney leases the island from the Bahamian government.

The 1,000-acre island is roughly 3 miles long by 2 miles wide, but only 55 acres are developed. You can get a great view of the undeveloped areas of the island from the observation tower on the way to Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach.

Which cruise ships go there?

disney cruise second private island

All Disney Cruise Line ships except Disney Wonder will visit Castaway Cay. It's a staple on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries, which is where the majority of Disney ships travel.

Ships visiting Castaway Cay on upcoming cruises include:

  • Disney Dream
  • Disney Fantasy
  • Disney Magic
  • Disney Treasure
  • Disney Wish

How do you get to and around Castaway Cay?

disney cruise second private island

Castaway Cay was the first cruise line private island to feature a pier where ships can dock. One ship at a time can visit Castaway Cay, and passengers can walk straight off the ship and onto the island.

It's a decent walk from the ship to the first section of beach. To accommodate all cruisers, Disney runs a tram from the end of the pier to stops by Scuttle's Cove and Pelican Point, on either end of the main family beach, and from the Pelican Point area to Serenity Bay.

Note that the Serenity Bay tram is separate from the main tram between the ship and the main beaches. A kind driver saved me from going in circles because I thought the Serenity Bay tram would take me all the way back to the pier.

Paved paths throughout the island will take you anywhere you want to go. I walked all the way to Serenity Bay down the bike trail (which doubles as an air strip), and it's not a short walk. You can take a detour to loop around the paved nature trail that leads to the observation tower.

Disney also provides beach strollers and wheelchairs for passenger use.

What are the Castaway Cay beaches?

disney cruise second private island

Castaway Cay's main strip of beach is sheltered by a rocky breakwater, making the water calm and perfect for swimmers of all ages. The beach is divided into three sections: Boat Beach, where you'll find water sports rentals, and two family beaches, including a beach area exclusive to cabana guests.

An adults-only beach, Serenity Bay, is on the adjacent side of the island, open to the sea, and separate from the family beach.

Castaway Cay's three main beaches are:

Castaway Cay family beaches

disney cruise second private island

Castaway's family beaches are divided by Pelican Point, a rocky breakwater, where the Heads Up Bar sits. Both beaches have loungers, low-to-the-ground upright beach chairs and beach umbrellas that are free to use. Many adults like to drag the upright chairs down to the water's edge and hang out there, watching their kids frolic in the waves.

Both beaches have lifeguards and racks of life jackets available for guest use.

The closest family beach to the ship is near the Scuttle's Cove kids area and tram stop. It has a swim-out floating ropes course. The farther beach is closer to the Pelican Point tram stop. Its highlight is the Pelican Plunge floating water play area, with a splash area and dump bucket, water cannons and two slides (a tube slide and an open slide).

Lines can get long for the slide, and smaller sliders need to wear life jackets. The tube slide is much faster and shorter than the open slide. Be ready to get water up your nose, as it's a drop from the end of the slide into the water.

For the best choice of lounge space, you'll want to get off the ship early and trek to the farther ends of the beach. It was hard to find available chairs when we moved mid-afternoon from one side of the family beach to the other to use the slides.

The farthest end of the beach is lined with cabanas and reserved for cabana guests.

disney cruise second private island

The first beach you come to on your way from the ship is Boat Beach. This is where you'll find all the larger water sports gear available to rent, such as water bikes and kayaks. (A separate shack rents out snorkel gear).

No one sunbathes on Boat Beach.

Serenity Bay

disney cruise second private island

The adults-only Serenity Bay is exclusive to cruisers ages 18+. The beach is on the other side of the island from the family beaches and a long trek (or tram ride) from the Pelican Point area.

The beach itself has the same lounge chairs, low upright chairs and umbrellas as the other Castaway Cay beaches. There are cabanas for rent here, too; they lurk behind the main beach and share the sand and sea with regular guests.

Because Serenity Bay is a long haul from the Pelican Point tram stop area, it has its own facilities: barbecue pavilion, bathrooms, bar, float rental and massage hut.

I visited Serenity Bay at lunchtime, and the beach was not crowded at all. Plenty of loungers were unclaimed — likely because the majority of Disney cruisers were spending time together as families. Also, the water was not as clear or calm on this beach because it does not have a breakwater to protect it from the waves, so some adults might prefer the family beach area for swimming.

What are the best Castaway Cay things to do?

disney cruise second private island

Splashing and sunbathing are not nearly the only things to do at Castaway Cay. Its small developed area has a lot going on, both on land and in the lagoon.

Designated areas on both sides of the family beaches are reserved for snorkeling. The main snorkeling lagoon is between Boat Beach and the family beach, conveniently located by Gil's Fins and Boats, which dispenses snorkel gear, as well as tubes and floats for rent. Rumor has it that you can find a shipwreck and even some hidden Mickeys, as well as interesting sea creatures.

You can also pick up snorkels, floats and tubes at Flippers and Floats (located between the two halves of the family beach) and The Windsock Hut at Serenity Bay (float rentals only). If you rent an inner tube, don't let it out of your grasp. I saw several of these floating out past the ropes marking the end of the swimming area. The crew must have to come out on boats at the end of the day to round them all up!

The floating ropes course and Pelican Plunge water slides are also fun diversions for families and gives you something to do besides swimming that doesn't involve spending money.

Scuttle's Cove is the beachside extension of the shipboard Oceaneer Club. Parents and caregivers can drop off their younger children to play in the sand under youth staff supervision in order to snag some time at Serenity Bay or in the snorkel lagoon. As with the onboard kids club, the service is complimentary.

Scuttle's Cove include the Monstro Point whale dig site (where kids can play archeologist and dig in the sand for bones), a small splash pad and an area for sand games.

disney cruise second private island

Between the Scuttle's Cove and Pelican Point tram stops, In-Da-Shade Games offers basketball, ping pong, billiards, giant checkers, foosball and table games in an open-air wooden pavilion.

Over by the Pelican Point area, a beach sports area offers tetherball, volleyball and soccer, and the Spring-A-Leak wet play area is fun for littles who want to get wet without the waves. A bike rental station rents bikes for kids and grownups; I didn't see trail-a-bikes, but they did have adult bikes with child seats on the back. One-hour bike rentals cost $15 (for ages 3+).

The full bike path, from the rental area to Serenity Bay and around the loop to the observation tower is 1.5 miles. If you prefer to run, doing the trail out to the adult beach and back again (including a second tower loop) is 3 miles or 5K.

Disney used to host an official race called the Castaway Cay 5K. Currently, it's not offered as a group activity, but you can do it on your own, on your honor, and pick up a medal back at the bike rental booth. If you're not racing, the observation tower is a nice stop for views of the island.

A few water stations are set out along the race course.

Teens have their own secret hangout called The Hideout, tucked away behind the beach sports and bike rental area.

Adults can book 50-minute solo or couples' massages at the massage cabana on the adults beach.

If you're interested in water sports, Disney offers a selection of rentals on Boat Beach.

Rentals include:

  • AquaTrike, $30 for 30 minutes
  • Chiliboats Waterbikes, $30 for 30 minutes (ages 14+)
  • Float or tube, $15 for the day
  • Paddle boat, $20 for 30 minutes for 2-seater boats or $25 for a 4-seater
  • Sea kayak, $20 for 30 minutes on a single kayak (ages 14-plus) or $25 for a double kayak
  • Snorkel equipment, $22 (ages 5 to 9) or $38 (ages 10-plus) for the day
  • Stand-up paddle board, $20 for 30 minutes (ages 14-plus)

The shore excursions desk assured me that it's easy to rent water sports gear on the island if you're not sure you want to commit in advance.

If you're an active family, consider the Castaway Cay Getaway Package. The three-in-one rental package includes snorkel equipment and a float or inner-tube for the day, plus a one-hour bicycle rental. The package is valued at $52 for little kids or $68 for anyone ages 10 and up, but costs $30 or $50, respectively, saving you $18 to $22.

The Castaway Cay Getaway Package is only available for booking online pre-cruise or aboard the ship; you cannot book it once on the island.

Can I meet Disney characters on Castaway Cay?

disney cruise second private island

A favorite Disney cruise pastime is meeting Mickey Mouse and friends, princesses, superheroes and pirates, and you have those opportunities on Castaway Cay. The island has numerous spots set up for photos, and throughout the day, various characters will make an appearance in their beachwear to pose for photos. On my cruise these included Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Captain Jack Sparrow.

Check your Navigator app to find out which character will be at which station at what time. The post office, Marge's Barges, Mt. Rustmore and the beach across from Scuttle's Cove are popular photo spots for the characters. If you want the beach spots, plan to line up and get your photos early before your family gets all wet and sandy.

What are the excursions at Castaway Cay?

disney cruise second private island

If you're looking for a little more than just a beach day, you can book a handful of Castaway Cay excursions. The available tours are predominantly guided water-based activities taking place in or around the island's waters.

On my cruise, the following tours were available:

  • Banana boat ride, $45 for 30 minutes (ages 10-plus) or $39 (ages 8 to 9)
  • Castaway Cay Fishing Adventure, $219 for a 3-hour tour (ages 8-plus)
  • Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure, $59 for a 1-hour tour ($48 for ages 5 to 9)
  • Castaway Snorkel By Boat Adventure, $95 for a 3-hour tour ($79 for ages 6 to 9)
  • Glass Bottom Boat Scenic Voyage, $59 for a 1-hour tour ($39 for kids under age 9)
  • Parasailing, $140 for 1 hour (ages 8-plus)
  • Walking and Kayak Nature Adventure, $73 for 3.5 hours (age 10-plus)

In addition, the Extreme Getaway Package combines a one-hour stingray adventure with snorkel equipment, bicycle and float or inner-tube rentals. The cost is $95 for kids and adults ages 10 and up or $73 for kids ages 5 to 9.

Many of the boat-based excursions (such as parasailing and fishing trips) depart from the Marge's Barges and Sea Charters dock at the end of the cruise pier. The stingray adventure meets at the Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure hut at the end of Boat Beach farthest from the ship; the protected stingray lagoon is just offshore.

Does Castaway Cay offer cabanas to rent?

disney cruise second private island

Yes, Castaway Cay cabanas are available to rent both on the family beach and at Serenity Bay. From what I saw, the family beach cabanas could be a great way to have a more relaxing, less crowded experience on Castaway Cay. The Serenity Bay cabanas seemed less of an upgrade, given that the beach was empty and all the services are so close.

Related: Ultimate guide to cruise ship cabanas

Family Beach cabanas

Castaway Cay offers 20 cabanas on the farthest end of the family beaches, just around the corner from Serenity Bay. The cabanas line a stretch of beach that is roped off, so regular cruisers cannot go there. They are numbered 1 to 21 as there is no cabana #13.

The 325-square-foot cabanas are tucked away under the palm trees. They are outfitted with indoor seating, a ceiling fan, drinks refrigerator, safe, plush towels and cooling face cloths, magazines to read and complimentary sunscreen. Portable cribs are available on request for guests with babies.

Fresh fruit and light snacks are provided, as are unlimited soda and bottled water. Servers will come around to take alcoholic drink orders. You can press a button in your cabana to call them if you don't see anyone and want to order a drink or get your soda, water or snacks restocked.

Outside the cabana, guests have access to lounge chairs, a hammock and a freshwater shower. The cabana rental comes with access to snorkel equipment, sand toys and floats or inner tubes, plus a one-hour bike rental.

Cabanas are identical with two exceptions. Cabana #16 is wheelchair accessible; it cannot be booked online. Cabana #21 is called the Grand Family Cabana, and it's oversized at 650 square feet.

disney cruise second private island

On my cruise, cabanas cost $797.50 for an eight-hour rental for up to six people. You could add up to four more people, for a total of 10, for $56 additional per person. For groups larger than six people, children under 3 are not charged; however, they count toward the maximum number of people allowed on the rental.

The Grand Family Cabana cost $1,127.50 for up to 10 people and could accommodate up to 16, with each additional guest charged $56 per person.

Serenity Bay cabanas

The six Serenity Bay cabanas are only available to guests ages 18 and up. They're numbered 22 through 27 and are located behind the adults-only beach and its rows of lounge chairs.

The cabanas are the same size and come with nearly the same inclusions as the family beach cabanas. The difference is that snorkel equipment is not provided because there is no snorkeling lagoon at Serenity Bay.

Despite being the same size, Serenity Bay cabanas are priced for just four guests at $493.90 for the day; additional guests up to 10 total will pay $56 each over the base rate.

Is food included on  Castaway Cay?

disney cruise second private island

Yes, multiple venues serve a complimentary barbecue lunch on Castaway Cay. The main venues are Cookie's BBQ and Cookie's Too BBQ, but a small lunch buffet is also available by the Serenity Bay tram stop so adults on that beach don't have to trek back to the Pelican Point area to eat.

All three venues serve the same food, buffet style, in open-sided pavilions with outdoor picnic tables, some shaded, for eating. Lunch is typically served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The main event is all kinds of grilled meat: burgers and hot dogs, Cajun-spiced chicken, salmon and barbecue brisket and pork. Vegetarian chili and veggie burgers are also available (the latter on request).

Sides include cole slaw, potato salad, corn and bean salad, macaroni salad, chips, corn on the cob and corn bread. Dessert options include a variety of fruit, amazing chocolate chip cookies, chocolate and strawberry-cheesecake mini cakes and soft-serve ice cream. Pro tip: Take the cookies to the soft-serve machine to create a DIY ice cream sandwich.

disney cruise second private island

Self-serve soft drink machines dispense complimentary soda, water, sports drinks, iced tea and lemonade.

Lines can get long, so plan accordingly, especially if you have hot and hungry little ones in tow.

Are there bars on Castaway Cay?

Even this family-friendly island has plenty of bars serving extra-fee drinks and frozen concoctions. You'll find them throughout the island. You'll have to pay a la carte for drinks purchased at Castaway Cay's bar because Disney Cruise Line does not offer an all-inclusive drink package .

disney cruise second private island

The Conched Out Bar and Sand Bar are the main beachside bars along the family beach, serving beer, cocktails and frozen drinks. The Heads Up Bar serves the same, but is located atop Pelican Point, the rocky breakwater between the two halves of the family beach. Its patio is occasionally the setting for on-island weddings.

You can also find stands selling smoothies and drinks outside the lunch pavilions. I saw many cruisers carrying drinks in souvenir coconut-shaped cups.

Right by the Pelican Point tram stop, Summertime Freeze serves up smoothies and alcoholic frozen drinks in "Frozen"-themed souvenir cups.

Out at Serenity Bay, the Castaway Air Bar, housed in what looks to be an airplane hangar, keeps adults refreshed throughout their beach day. It's got a wooden deck with comfortable seating for anyone who wants to kick back with a drink without getting sandy.

Is there shopping on Castway Cay?

disney cruise second private island

Castaway Cay has multiple shops selling everything from Castaway Cay exclusive Disney merchandise, local Bahamian crafts and souvenirs and beach items you might have forgotten (hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, sand toys, etc.).

She Sells Sea Shells and Everything Else by the Scuttle's Cove tram stop and Buy the Seashore by Pelican Point are your go-tos for Disney merch and sundries. Midway between the two are a couple of Bahamian retail outlets grouped together.

The only accepted method of payment is your Key to the World cruise ship card, even in the Bahamian-run shops.

If you're a Disney fan hoping to buy some swag not found anywhere else, you'll be happy browsing the Castaway Cay shops. Prices on beach items, however, are incredibly marked up, so if you forget to bring toys or a hat, try to pick them up at an earlier port or go without.

Can I get married on Castaway Cay?

Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings department can absolutely help couples plan a wedding on Castaway Cay during cruise itineraries that visit the island. (Weddings can also be held on board the ship.) You can choose from ceremony venues on the beach or at Wedding Pointe (the deck that juts out over the water by the Heads Up Bar).

Note that most Castaway Cay weddings take place in the morning, and the reception will be held back on board. In case of inclement weather or the ship's failure to dock at the island, your wedding might need to be rescheduled to an onboard location.

Also, Castaway Cay weddings are not legal weddings. You will need to file paperwork and get legally married in your home state. Your island ceremony will be purely symbolic.

What additional amenities will I find?

disney cruise second private island

Crew members are on hand at several stations to hand out towels as you're leaving the ship. Towel return bins are located throughout the island, but I didn't see anywhere by the beaches to swap out a wet towel for a dry one.

Bathrooms and beach showers are found throughout the island, as are plenty of garbage and recycling bins.

A First Aid station is located by Scuttle's Cove. Island information kiosks are available at both Scuttle's Cove and Pelican Point tram stop areas.

Beach wheelchairs and strollers are available to borrow.

Disney's Wi-Fi is not available off the ship at Castaway Cay, so if you wish to use your phone, you'll need to have a plan that works in the Bahamas.

Can you stay overnight on Castaway Cay?

disney cruise second private island

Some Disney employees do live on Castaway Cay to take care of the island. However, passengers do not have the opportunity to spend the night.

If you love Castaway Cay, look for "double dip" itineraries that feature two calls at Castaway Cay. Even if the visits are on consecutive days, you still must reboard the ship in the afternoon and cannot stay late on the island.

What's the typical weather like ?

You can find great weather in the Bahamas year-round. Average high temperatures are in the low 80s in winter and low 90s in summer. The rainiest months are June, August and September. The Bahamas is subject to hurricane season, which runs June through November. The peak time for tropical storms and hurricanes is August through October.

That means it will likely be either pleasant or hot during your visit to Castaway Cay. Make use of those complimentary beach umbrellas and shaded trams when journeying out to Serenity Bay. Apply and reapply sunscreen (choose the reef-safe brands) if you're spending the day on the beach or biking around the island. It's easy to burn.

It's also smart to stay hydrated during your day on island. Mix up your water intake with some of the sports drinks at the soda machines to keep your electrolytes up.

Castaway Cay has a pier, so your visit likely won't be canceled due to wind that might make tendering unwise. However, if conditions are too dangerous for the captain to safely dock, your call might be canceled or rescheduled.

I know change is bound to happen. But miss the wonderful Poly days. Was magical. Now just another luxury hotel. Missing so much of the heart that made it special. We used to go three times a year from Canada — it was so so special. Most of Disney has turned into a machine,

Looks great and hoping to get a reservation when we go Dec 7.

So looking forward to this, but wish there was going to be some Grand Villas available. We are DVC owners in the Polynesian Resort but have never been able to stay there. We try every year and they are always very full, we always try to get something right on the dates when our times are available but to our dismay can’t seem to get in there.

I wish Disney had stayed with the design of the original Poly. This looks like a budget cut version of just another beige hotel There is a reason people keep coming back, don’t try to update what works. The wheel doesn’t constantly need to be reinvented. I thought the interior would look more like the original. SO very disappointed.

There is something wrong going on here! We paid big money to be DVC members at two different resorts, shouldn’t all of us that are DVC members get to make reservations before outsiders!? I’m personally sick of cash payers taking a room in our HB and leaving us out to dry. DVC members should have first chance at staying at a new resort.

Was at WDW last month with family. My wife and I took some time off from the kids and grandkids to check out some of our previous stay locations i.e. Contemporary , G. Floridian, and Poly. Many stays at the Polynesian when kids were younger. Very disappointed about design, size and location of tower. It does not blend in with rest of resort and lots like any standard hotel. Plus it sits right on top of the Grand Floridian. The pool is overcrowded as is. Did not notice new pool or even room for one. I feel that Disney has abandoned their idea of unique lodging for an unique vacation. Theming and architectural design has take second fiddle to economics. This is also the case with The Swan Reserve. How could this be built next to such a great concept area as the Beach Club, Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin. Please don’t build any more of these cookie cutter “hotels” at the World. Bring back the Magic.

Love the new tower and am excited to stay there. We are current owners at Poly and are dismayed by the lack of a clear path for us to book using our points. We want to stay there when it opens in December!. It seems like cash reservations will get precedence leaving current owners unable to book at our home resort (where we pay dues). If this is the same association why wouldn’t we be able to book with points on June 4th? I can’t get a clear answer on this – only timeshare bureaucratic talking points.

Are they getting their own bus stops over there? We own at POLY and there’s a tiny little bus stop station as it is. I already know they are sharing the monorail station, but there no way they think that little bus stop can handle the tower also. Bay lake shares with contemporary but everyone can see the difference in size of bus stops there. This could be a nightmare that will drive me to abandon my home resort and book elsewhere. I’m sure hoping my mind is overthinking this. But I’ve seen the monorail station wrap around the upstairs of the lobby, so can’t imagine once the tower guests have to go there too.

It would be awesome to let Poly DVC owners know when they can book with points and if it will be the same dates you can book with cash!

Why did imagineering not model the exterior to blend with the rest of the Poly? The now permanent Poly Hilton is going to be an out-of-place eyesore next to the rest of the Poly and blend in with nothing. I don’t understand how these atrocious design decisions are made and OK’d by management, its as if continuity of theming and attention to detail is thrown out for budget reasons, or worse if management simply doesn’t care anymore. Sad!

I’m worried about what this will do to the monorail queue, not to mention the crowds of people going through the original Poly lobby to get to the monorail platform. It’s already crowded.

This looks just like Grand Destino. Blah

BRING BACK THE LUAU!!!!

I’m not a current DVC member but I’m always on the ‘verge’ of becoming one. I do like the Poly and I’m staying there in July for first time. While I love the vibe at Poly, I like this lobby b/c it isn’t just the same as the other. All of DVC lobby’s, in my opinion, have a bit of a different design. Often not filled with as much ‘Disney’ in your face (which I love) but more subtle. This lobby looks like the beach to me and I’m ok with that.

The fact that they say they are celebrating nature with the construction of a tower is ironic. There is a reason the original design team scrapped the idea of building a tower – because it doesn’t go with the Polynesian theme at all. The current resort was wonderful the way it was and so relaxing. I was very disappointed when they built the tower at Coronado as well, that was previously one of my favorite resorts. I agree with the other comments that the decor looks bland and looks like every other hotel, even more disappointing. At least they “tried” at Aulani but a tower is a tower and has no place in Polynesia.

I think it looks so nice! I always found the original poly lobby to be so dark and dank. Plus I’m always tripping on the uneven stone floors. This lobby is much better.

My family can’t wait to try the new tower! Very excited as Poly is our fav WDW resort.

For people wondering about DVC owners losing out to cash bookings… that is not so. When new DVC opens only a percent is declared in the association. After those points get sold, more of the resort gets declared. Right now Riviera is still 25% undeclared, so 25% of the bookings go to cash.

One viable complaint is restrictions. Buyers were lead to believe that mattered and apparently not so much. Riviera buyers have to deal with salvage value plummeting due to one resort resale restriction. Lead to believe would be normal and then VGF and Poly did not follow, leaving Riviera owners out to dry.

Is someone answering the questions in the comments?

Looks beautiful but whats not so beautiful is saying if a DVC member is not paying to stay, a later date will be available to reserve with points! Are you really putting that out there??? Thanks for making us feel like we are not special!! I already paid for my membership. Disney is not what it used to be.

What is being done to add parking? Will there be garage spaces underneath like Kidani? When we were on property last month, we drove over like we always do for some Tonga toast at Captain Cooks and for the first time ever we were told we couldn’t come in and park for quick service breakfast as spaces were limited.

This is so bland and not “Disney” at all … I would just stay off property at a cheaper luxury resort. Like a carbon copy of Gran Destino tower … blah

If this ends up being the same association, it’s a huge insult to current owners for cash stays being given the opportunity to book before members booking on points.

I really wish that Disneyland Magic Key holders could get in on these early deals. It makes almost no sense that some of the discounts and specials don’t go between parks. I get not having access to the parks, but the AP isn’t cheap so I don’t usually want to pay for California and then consider the extra costs of Florida. Considering a the Premier Passport was discontinued back in 2020, throw us a bone here, jeez…

For those folks asking about studios, a lot of the existing resorts have two types of 2-bedrooms: “lock-off” two bedrooms that can be separated into a studio + a 1 bedroom, and “dedicated” two bedrooms that cannot be separated. I’m hopeful the Poly tower will offer both types.

It’s pretty, But I was hoping/ expecting it to have more of the Polynesian/ Aulani feel. Kind of feels out of place.

Enough of more beige towers that look like every other hotel in the world

It looks amazing! I think it’s fantastic that Disney is using the original Imagineering inspired design! Great job, Disney!

PLEASE tell me there are new amenities in this tower like restaurants, pools and shops. ESPECIALLY restaurants. The restaurants and main pool are already way overcrowded without hundreds more people added.

I’m Assuming the duo studios are like the tower studios at Riviera and probably no regular studios as currently that’s what Poly DVC is? But I’m surprised no grand villas

On the June 4th date, it implies that DVC members can use their points for reservations later. Does that mean I can’t use my points for reservations on the 4th? And on the 4th how does 11 month and 7 month window apply? Also is the new tower going to be under the current poly DVC contract agreements as was done with Grand Floridian?

On June 4th, Can DVC members make point based reservations 7 months out?

So obviously there are only duo studios because this is part of the existing Poly association, which is MOSTLY regular deluxe studios.

But why aren’t Poly association owners getting first crack?

Wow, I had no idea Polynesia was so beige.

The Poly is my favorite resort. I don’t mind the addition of the tower, but I wish the exterior looked less contemporary and more Polynesian. It doesn’t match the rest of the resort. Also, please find a way to bring back the luau. It was an awesome show and a unique offering that made the resort special.

So will this be its own DVC association or will it be grouped into the existing Polynesian DVC?

Will they be selling DVC points memberships for the new Poly tower?

Since it appears to be a part of the existing association, which is nothing but studios, they probably only added the toom types not previously offered.

Am i reading this correctly…owners of contracts at Polynesian have to wait until everyone else pays cash before we can use our points at our home resort? What’s advantage of having Polynesian as home resort & 11 month window if we have to wait? Just curious

No 3-bedroom grand villas?

There is no mention of deluxe studio villas, only the duo villas. Was that an oversight or are there no “traditional” studios that sleep 4-5 people?

MSC to base second cruise ship, the Grandiosa, at Port Canaveral starting late next year

disney cruise second private island

MSC Cruises will base a second cruise ship at Port Canaveral , starting late next year, boosting options for cruise passengers and boosting revenue for the port.

The MSC Grandiosa will offer alternating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, starting in December 2025, which will be the first sailings of that ship out of a U.S. port.

When it comes to Port Canaveral, the Grandiosa will join the MSC Seashore , which will offer three- and four-night cruises from Port Canaveral to Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , MSC's private island in the Bahamas that aims to focus on conservation of marine life.

In announcing the addition of the Grandiosa to the port lineup, Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said the port is "honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa. Expanding their home-port fleet at Port Canaveral underscores their confidence in our partnership and shared commitment to success."

MSC Cruises USA President Rubén Rodríguez said the winter 2025-26 season will mark MSC's largest presence in the United States to date, "and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that. Ever since we started sailing from Port Canaveral in 2021, our guests have told us they love how convenient that makes it to experience MSC Cruises’ unique international flavor."

Here are more details about the addition of the MSC Grandiosa to the Port Canaveral lineup:

Another cruise terminal planned: Port Canaveral announces plans for new north side cruise terminal at cargo berth site

MSC Grandiosa — one of MSC Cruises’ "Meraviglia-plus-class" ships — will become MSC Cruises’ largest ship to home-port at Port Canaveral when it arrives next year. It is 1,094 feet long; 141 feet wide; has 2,421 cabins; and has 19 decks, including 15 decks for passengers. It has a passenger capacity of 6,334, plus 1,704 crew members. It began sailings with passengers in 2019.

In comparison, the Seashore has 2,270 cabins, a passenger capacity of 5,877 and crew of 1,648. It began sailings with passengers in 2021.

Both ships rank as among the world's 25 largest cruise ships.

What are some of the Grandiosa's features?

  • 10 restaurants, including Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Kaito Sushi, Kaito Tepanyaki and L’Atelier Bistrot.
  • Five pools and nine hot tubs.
  • Wild Forest Aquapark.
  • Enhanced MSC Yacht Club, a private luxury area of the ship for passengers who pay additional fees for access.
  • Expansive MSC Aurea Spa.
  • Large Broadway-style theater and Carousel Lounge for nightly entertainment.
  • 323-foot-long Galleria Grandiosa promenade shopping and dining area, with an LED sky screen.

Where will the ship sail to on its seven-night cruises from Port Canaveral ?

  • Eastern Caribbean: Various calls, including Nassau (the Bahamas), Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve (the Bahamas), Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Charlotte Amalie (U.S. Virgin Islands).
  • Western Caribbean: Various calls, including Nassau (the Bahamas), Cozumel (Mexico), Costa Maya (Mexico), George Town (Cayman Islands), Montego Bay (Jamaica), Falmouth (Jamaica) and Belize City (Belize).

How will the addition of the Grandiosa affect revenue at Port Canaveral?

The Grandiosa will roughly double the guaranteed annual revenue Port Canaveral receives from MSC, under a proposed amendment to the port's operating agreement with the cruise line, which Port Canaveral commissioners will vote on at their meeting on Wednesday.

Under the current operating agreement, the annual guaranteed fees payment from MSC to the port is about $6.84 million. That will increase to $13.16 million after the Grandiosa joins the lineup. It will rise to $14.52 million the following year and to $14.95 million the year after that.

The port also will get more parking revenue from MSC cruise passengers, with the second ship and resulting increased passenger counts.

Where is the Grandiosa now?

The Grandiosa currently is doing Mediterranean sailings. Before coming to Port Canaveral, the ship also will do South American sailings out of ports in Brazil.

What other cruise lines have ships based at Port Canaveral?

Carnival, Disney, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Two other cruise lines will be bringing ships to the port later this year — Princess in November and Celebrity in December.

How big is MSC Cruises?

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, MSC Cruises is the world’s third-largest cruise line. It is the market leader in Europe, South America, the Middle East and Southern Africa, with a growing presence in North America and the Far East. The MSC Cruises fleet consists of 22 ships, with three new vessels due to be launched in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

The company operates in more than 100 countries around the world, offering cruises across five continents, calling at more than 300 destinations.

A unique Disney experience: Here's what you can't miss on Disney Cruise Lines

D isney Cruise Line is synonymous with family vacations at sea, so you might think that every Disney cruise in 2024 will be a good choice for families. And having sailed on every one of Disney's cruise ships myself, I can say the simple answer is yes, that's absolutely true. But some Disney cruise experiences hold an extra special place in my family's heart, and they've made me realize that certain Disney cruises can go above and beyond even DCL's usual family-friendly standard.

I'm thinking about when we met Disney’s "Frozen" friends in person on a Norway sailing or laughed to tears over dinner with Crush the Sea Turtle ("cha dude!"), or completed a 5K race with my daughter on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . That's why my picks for the best Disney cruises for families in 2024 are all about these kinds of extra special experiences, the ones that aren't just the usual level of Disney cruise line magic but will elevate your family vacation into once-in-a-lifetime "cherished family memory" territory.

Find a deal: Kids sail free: 6 cruise lines that let kids cruise for free

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney's brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney's newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024.

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL's newest private island destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL's private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience.

Family cruises: 7 best cruise lines for families (and their 12 most kid-friendly ships)

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions.

A special preview cruise to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the Disney Magic departs from Fort Lauderdale in June 2024.

2. Alaska and Australia cruises on the Disney Wonder in 2024

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. In the summer months, Disney Cruise Line positions one of its smaller ships, the Disney Wonder, out west so families can take weeklong sailings from Vancouver to the "Last Frontier." Along the way, you can experience majestic wildlife and stunning scenery while calling on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap.

No hidden costs: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

But that's not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025.

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL's original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers, it remains one of the line's most intimate vessels. That's a reason to love it. Both the Wonder and its sister ship, Disney Magic, are especially great Disney cruise options in 2024 if your family is new to cruising . Far from being a drawback, the smaller size makes it less likely to feel overwhelming to first-timers.

3. European vacations on the Disney Dream

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line sent the Disney Dream across the Atlantic for the first time. The ship will head back to Europe in 2024 with summer cruises in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles, Iceland, and Norwegian fjords. These are the best 2024 Disney Cruises for experiencing new ports of call like Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany, along with three Mediterranean destinations (Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta) that Disney will visit for the first time since 2014.

Make memories: Why a Holland America heritage cruise Is perfect for a multigenerational family vacation

In June, the Disney Dream sails from Civitavecchia (Rome) with stops in Naples and three different Greek Islands, including Mykonos and Crete. In July, the ship transitions to northern European cruises, including a 12-night voyage departing from England (Southampton) on July 24, heading through the Norwegian fjords, three days in Iceland, and an overnight stay in Reykjavik before returning to Southampton.

My family sailed on Disney’s inaugural Norwegian fjords cruise in 2015, and it was hands down our best family vacation because of the Disney-specific experiences no other cruise line can offer, such as Anna and Elsa from "Frozen" posing for pictures at a Norwegian Village museum in Ålesund.

4. Disney Cruise Line's private island trifecta on the Disney Fantasy

Many fans of Disney Cruise Line’s private island get particularly excited when itineraries include a Castaway Cay "double dip," i.e., two stops at Castaway Cay. But in 2024, the Disney Fantasy ventures on a seven-night itinerary that calls on Disney’s private islands not once, not twice, but three times with a stop at Castaway Cay and two visits to the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Splash zone: 50 best cruise ship water parks and private islands for kids

I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the "stingray shuffle" and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure. I love that this 2024 Disney cruise will give families plenty of time to explore Disney’s brand-new private island destination on the southernmost tip of Eleuthera without overlooking a day at the old favorite.

5. Disney Wish theme park and cruise vacation

The Disney Wish is DCL's newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

Know before you go: 6 things you didn’t know you could do on a Disney Cruise

Disney land and sea vacations are the best of both worlds for families with theme park lovers who want to go, go, go, and other family members looking for a more laidback experience. My advice is to head to the theme parks first, get tired out from the walking, rides, and stimulation, and then sail off on a four-night cruise to decompress. My wife and I enjoyed the most expansive stateroom ever when we sailed on the Disney Wish last summer and it couldn't have been more relaxing.

6. Themed Cruises – Pixar, Marvel, and holidays

In January, I had the opportunity to experience Pixar Day at Sea , Disney Cruise Line’s newest themed cruise, on the Disney Fantasy. In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an " overflowing toy box of fun " and I'm excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

Set sail: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

Disney's themed cruise days aren't limited to Pixar, either. There's a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime cruises.

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship's atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree "bloomed" with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney's sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by "Aladdin," "Coco," "Zootopia," "Jungle Cruise," even "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

Before you book: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure. The ship will sail seven-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean and have a theater-in-the-round restaurant at the Plaza de Coco as well as a cinematic dining experience at Worlds of Marvel. Because these are longer cruises than those available on DCL's other ship in the same class (Disney Wish), you can experience two distinct shows in each of these venues during a voyage.

MSC Grandiosa will begin seven-night Caribbean itineraries in December 2025 for the winter sailing season while MSC Seashore remains, but sailing short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings to Nassau and the cruise line’s private island Ocean Cay.

It’s the largest MSC ship yet to sail from the port. The Meraviglia Plus-class vessel is among the top 20 largest cruise ships worldwide at 181,541 gross tons and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,334. It debuted in 2019 and features a water park, five pools, nine hot tubs, spa, the MSC Yacht Club exclusive area and a Lego partnership in its kids clubs.

One of the more dramatic features is the 323-foot-long Galleria Grandiosa promenade with an LED projection screen over the length of the walkway. The ship features 10 restaurants including the Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Kaito Sushi, Kaito Tepanyaki and L’Atelier Bistrot.

This is its first time taking on North American duties, and its arrival coincides with the debut out of PortMiami of the MSC World America, which will be even larger.

“The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that,” said MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez in a press release. “We know people sailing from Central Florida want options, and we’re delighted to offer them two of our most modern and glamorous ships with itineraries that will appeal to everyone from first-time to seasoned cruisers.”

MSC first began sailing from the port in 2021, joining mainstays Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. It has shuffled several ships for short runs for what Rodríguez said was a taste of what MSC has to offer. That has included MSC Divina, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seashore.

The family-owned cruise line has its roots in Europe, so the line plays up its “unique international flavor” compared with the other lines, while also touting its environmental efforts such as can be found on the private Bahamas island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. It is undergoing a major expansion effort to support excursions and on-island activities.

MSC Grandiosa will trade off alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. Eastern trips will visit Nassau and Ocean Cay, Bahamas; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands. Western trips will visit Nassau; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; George Town, Cayman Islands; Montego Bay and Falmouth, Jamaica; and Belize City, Belize.

“We are honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa,” said Port Canaveral CEO John Murray in the release. “Expanding their homeport fleet at Port Canaveral underscores their confidence in our partnership and shared commitment to success.”

The growing port for a time took on the title of world’s busiest cruise port after the pandemic, and while PortMiami has since retaken that title, Port Canaveral continues to expand its ship offerings.

The last sailing season saw 16 ships that either homeported year-round or sailed seasonally, and it expects that number to grow to 19 for the 2024-2025 sailing season, including the debuts of Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.
